The Fearless Friday Forecast

Man, I never thought this day would get here. A lot sure has happened since January 7, when LSU body-slammed Ohio State in New Orleans to give the SEC its second straight national championship. Just a few of the highlights:

**—A tornado hit the Georgia Dome in March, but now it’s all spiffy again and ready for Saturday night’s showdown between Alabama and Clemson.

**—The BCS commissioners thought about going to a four-team playoff (or at least they say they did.) But they decided that the status quo in the post-season for the next six years.

**—Georgia parlayed an impressive win over Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl into a unanimous No. 1 ranking and now must defend it against an unprecedented schedule.

**—Speaking of Georgia, we lost UGA VI in June. Regardless of who you pull for you have to admit that he was a Damn good dog. I sent some of the video of his funeral at Sanford Stadium to my friends around the country. In it the Rev. Claude McBride ends the service by saying: “Sic’ em UGA. Woof. Woof. Amen!” I’m sorry, folks, but you just don’t get that in the Big Ten. UGA VII makes his debut tomorrow in Athens.

And finally, not a moment too soon, we have the first Fearless Friday Forecast of the 2008 season. As first weekends go, this one is pretty good. But here’s today’s question: Was last season, with all of the craziness, just an aberration or a sign of things to come? Is there an Appalachian State over Michigan out there this weekend?

I sure hope so.

Let’s get on the with the picks:

1. Georgia Southern at Georgia: The Bulldogs get an early tee time (12:30 p.m.) on Saturday and they should make the most of it. This is a game where Georgia needs to work on that offensive line, which needs to rally a little bit after the loss of LT Trinton Sturdivant. We also need to see who is going to get the football after Knowshon Moreno completes his obligatory 15-18 carries. It’s time for Georgia to start getting their ducks in a row for that Sept. 13 trip to South Carolina. Georgia 45, Georgia Southern 14.

2. Clemson vs. Alabama (Georgia Dome): Early in the summer it appeared that Clemson just had too much firepower for the Crimson Tide. But it looks like Alabama will have a little more pop in the offense with the addition of freshman WR Julio Jones and they now have a mammoth athlete at the nose tackle in Terrence Cody. I still think Clemson wins the game but it’s going to be tight. Very, very tight. Clemson 20, Alabama 17.

3. Appalachian State at LSU: After what Appalachian State did at Michigan’s Big House in the 2007 opener, there is no chance that the Tigers are going to overlook the Mountaineers from Boone, who have won three straight Division I-AA national championships. Appalachian State lost a bunch of good players but it still has quarterback Armanti Edwards, who drives good defenses crazy with his ability to move around and avoid pressure. LSU wins the game but Edwards and the Mountaineers keep it uncomfortably close for three quarters. LSU 31, Appalachian State 17.

4. Hawaii at Florida: It doesn’t look like Percy Harvin is going to play for the Gators but it won’t matter. June Jones is not the coach any more and QB Colt Brennan is also long gone. Florida gets the chance to field test its new offense which has surrounded QB Tim Tebow with several more weapons. The defense will have a confidence booster against the Hawaii offensive line. The last time Hawaii lined up against a team from the SEC (Georgia in the Sugar Bowl) it didn’t look pretty. This one will not look pretty either Florida 56, Hawaii 17.

5. Louisiana-Monroe at Auburn: Tony Franklin’s spread offense is put on display for the home folks at Jordan-Hare Stadium for the first time. We are still waiting to see who will take the first snap-Kodi Burns or Chris Todd-but at the end of the day it won’t matter. Both can do some things to make the defense nervous. Auburn can’t afford to take ULM lightly because of what happened last November in Tuscaloosa. A lot of people (this writer included) are picking Auburn to replace LSU, the defending national champions, atop the SEC West. We’ll get an early indication in this one whether or not Auburn has the right stuff for that. Auburn 31, ULM 13.

6. Memphis at Ole Miss: Ole Miss has not been this excited about a football season since Eli Manning was a senior in 2003. That’s because new coach Houston Nutt inherited enough good players from Ed Orgeron to lead the Rebels to a bowl game this season. Quarterback Jevan Snead, a transfer from Texas, is finally eligible But don’t underestimate Memphis, which just an hour up the road. Tommy West’s team (7-6) finished strong after a 2-4 start last season and returns 16 starters. This is a rivalry game and anything can happen. Ole Miss 31, Memphis 24.

7. Tennessee at UCLA (Monday): For the second straight season the Volunteers open the season out on the West Coast. This trip, however, will be a lot more fun than the 2007 beat down (45-31) the Vols suffered at California. Yes, there are a lot of questions on the Tennessee team as there is a new offensive coordinator (Dave Clawson), new quarterback (Jonathan Crompton) and the hope that the Vols don’t have the same old defense (which finished 11th in the SEC last season). UCLA lost its first two quarterbacks and is down to junior college transfer Kevin Craft. This is not how new coach Rick Neuheisel wanted to start out. Tennessee 27, UCLA 17.

8. Kentucky at Louisville (Sunday): After a historic 2007 season that saw Kentucky beat LSU, the eventual national champions, in Lexington, there is an assumption that the Wildcats will fall back from the eight-victory level in 2008. Nobody lost more offensive firepower than the ‘Cats with the departure of QB Andre Woodson and a bunch of really good playmakers. But Coach Rich Brooks insists this is the deepest team he’s had at Kentucky and that this is clearly the best defense the Wildcats have had in a while. Louisville is still rebuilding post-Bobby Petrino. Kentucky wins with defense. Kentucky 24, Louisville 17.

9. Southern Cal at Virginia: Quarterback Mark Sanchez is going to answer the bell after dislocating this kneecap earlier in the summer. That is bad news for the Cavaliers. With Sanchez running the show, USC is good enough to win them all and play in South Florida for the national title. The last two times the Trojans started the season in the East (2003, 2004) they went on to win at least a share of the national championship. Southern Cal 30, Virginia 14.

10. Missouri vs. Illinois (St. Louis): This will be a very good quarterback battle between Missouri’s Chase Daniel and Juice Williams of Illinois. The Tigers get the edge because they have Jeremy Maclin, the most explosive player this side of Percy Harvin. Some are picking Missouri to beat Oklahoma for the Big 12 championship. We’ll find out in a hurry if the Gary Pinkel’s crew is the real deal. Missouri 31, Illinois 20.

Think Tony is spot on with his picks, but then again, not a lot of nailbiters on this weeks schedule (next week is worse), except KY may lose to Lville. On another note, think CMR watched that SC defense last night? Oh my…I can’t wait to see UGA shut out on Sept 13!!!

Glad to have the Fearless Friday Forecast back and ready to go Tony!!!!!

  1. UGA wins. Would like to see Figgins and AJ and MM and Tripp C. open the paasing game up and throw it around. Then hand off to CK and Samuel after Mareno gets his runs.

  2. I really like Clemson. Alot of weapons. Alot of exp. coming back. Bama is good but not good enough to win this one. I have it a lbigger win for Clemson. How does Cullen Harper continue to fly under the radar jsut becasue he might not be a 1rst day draft pick????? That dude is good. Clemson 30 Bama 20

  3. Would love for App St. to do it again. But LSU defense is on another planet compared to Michigan. No dice this year.

LSU-36 AppST.14

  1. Good tune up for UF. If Hawaii thought UGA had team speed….wait til lthey get on the field with the Gators. But UF won’t amke their QB cry like UGA did in Sugar Bowl. We will see everything UF has as far as Weapons on display, cause Meyer likes to make statements. UF offense is SCARY GOOD. Defense we shall see. UF-52 Hawaii-26

  2. The new spread hits thr ground running. Sorry Bama fans, but AU won’t have a repaeat of you guys game with them last year. AU rolls really. AU-46 LM-20

  3. Ole Miss will be much improved and Snead has some really good Talent to throw to. Don’t know much about Memphis but I’ll ride with Tony on this one. OM-33 Memphis-23

  4. UT is under the radar….but aren’t they always in the last few years? Arain Foster is probably the most underrated back in the country because of the Hype on Knowshon. Foster is a beast and UCLA will finsd out fast. UT-26-UCLA-20

  5. Kentucky lost a bunch but Brooks says they will begood to go. Louisville fell apart last year like Brohm did in the preseason. hank goodnees the Falcons didn’t draft Dorsey and then draft Brohm!! I hope Brooks is right becasue a solid Kentucky team makes the SEC that much tougher. UK-30 Cards-28

  6. Virginia is in big time trouble. Enough said. USC 45- Cavs-17

  7. Missouri offense is crazy good. Illinois is good but who replaces Mendenhal? If Illinois gets some turnovers they wil lkepp really close becasue the Zooker will hve them ready. Chase Daniel though is to much. Closer than you think Tony-Miss-33 Ill-30

AS ALWAYS GOOOOOO DAWGS!

Did anyone see Carolina’s team last night. They were awful!! Granted they will jell a little more prior the the 13th, but man do they suck. I mean, NC State was an awful team on both sides of the ball, and everyone knew that going in, but the chickens were given gift after gift with the fumble before half and the interception after half, and still couldn’t move the ball. State’s QB ran silly, until he was hurt, on the vaunted chicken defense. On the 13th they’ll introduced to Stafford, Knowshawn and co.

By Haywood Jablowme

August 29, 2008 9:05 AM | Link to this

Joe….

The So. Carolina o-line played terrible in the first half last night. NC State came thru there like crap thru a goose….and your QB threw 3 INTs to boot…and this was against a terrible NC State “D” that just didn’t adjust to SC’s 2nd half performance. Your “D” was good, but they should be….they have 10 returning starters. Don’t break your arm patting yourself on the back, because NC State was also terrible on offense, and became worse when their starting QB was knocked silly. If you can’t score, you won’t win, and the UGA “D” is in a lot better shape than the offense is with their patchwork line. I am sure W. Martinez will be licking his chops after watching the game film of last night’s game. If you aren’t real careful, Vandy is gonna stick a whipping stick straight up your collective a*******es next week. Just like they did last year.

T, why is it you always end some stupid comment about that uglyy-@$$ dog with “you just don’t get that in the Big Ten.” Do you think that’s an insult to Big Ten schools? I and any educated person would be quite happy not to have a slobbering, mangy mutt next to Jesus Christ in my priorities. This is why UGA is such a national laughingstock - people out west (I live in Denver) make fun of all of you, so if you wonder why you don’t get national respect, dawg fans, it’s because of people like Barnhart who have their heads so far up their rear that they don’t realize how stupid they are.

Defense was incredible - offense will improve. Looks like we found our QB and you could see the confidence grow as the game went on - and the NC State defense got worn down.

A very good first game!!

Dogs will be in trouble in Athens. This game will feature good defense and will be a low scoring affair…..which plays into the Cocks favor.

Dogs rated number 1? WHAT A JOKE!!!

Interested to see how the Dawgs take the field with the pressure of the season. Hopefully we won’t see a close at the half with only a 7-10pt lead like it usually was in the past. The best case, besides a victory, is to get out of the game without any injuries.

Did some of you people actually watch the South Carolina game last night? Let me guess, you just saw the final score right? Anybody who watched that game knows how horrible SC looked. Their offense was pathetic for the large majority of the night. Their starting QB threw 4 Ints!!! You don’t win games in the SEC when your QB throws that many picks. They got handed a few opportunities by a horrible NCST offense (and squandered a couple of them I might add). They only started to pull away when the wolfpack defense was tired and worn down at the end of the game. That won’t happen in the SEC either. Now, do I actually believe Carolina’s as horrible as they showed last night? No, I don’t. I expect MUCH more from Spurrier and Co. in a couple weeks. But do they have me shaking in my boots? Absolutely not.

As for Mark*, while I disagree with most of your comments, I do agree that the Uga thing is a little old by now. Did I like the dog? Yea, of course I did. I’m as hardcore a Georgia fan as they come. He patrolled the sidelines my whole college career, over the last four years. But, I think we can all let it go now. I lost my family dog a few months ago, and that took me less than a week to get over. Let’s get pumped about seeing Uga VII tomorrow!

And Hedge Head, is it really neccessary to bring politics into a FOOTBALL discussion? I hate to break it to you, but a lot of Georgia fans will be voting for Obama too. From the vibe on campus I’d say at least 65% of the student body will be. I’m guessing you were never a part of that particular group though, right?

Some of you could not be bigger idiots if you tried. I mean dumber than a bag of hammers.

To actually think the things you do is bad enough, but to type them out and press send. Telling Tony where he should go and bringing up Lewis, classless does not begin to describe you. Your momma would be so ashamed.

I think Uga is fantastic. But some people like to hear a rooster crow or an old car or an eagle fly in or rub a rock and run down a hill. It can all be made to sound pretty silly but it is passion and it is ours.

Hey, in the Big 10 they get excited watching a kid stand in a certain spot on the field, they call it “dotting the I”. That is pretty lame if you ask me.

To be fair, a shut out is a shut out. But until NCS’s starting QB went out, I didn’t think SC looked worth a dern on D either. Neither did you bunch of fairweather c** fans (I was peeking at the FGF on Rivals - you guys were in meltdown mode before that fieldgoal.)

Wow, what witty comebacks. Last time I checked, CU has a national championship much more recently than UGA - 1980? That’s the best you can do? For a bunch of talkers, you guys sure don’t have any championships to back it up. You sure stomped on Vandy’s V well though. Classy - and you needed them to fumble to beat them, huh? I find it comical the gamecock fans are bragging about that win last night. For anyone who didn’t watch the game but read the score in the paper may think SC is good this year. For anyone that actually watched the game they know they looked horrendous. The problem was NC State was that much worse. There has to be many high school teams that would beat NC State. I have no affiliation to either school, but they both looked dreadful.

Hey Reddawg, I hesistate to post this as we have both just agreed that politics shouldn’t be brought to a football blog, but on I go anyways. I did NOT infer that anyone not voting for Obama was never a student. You’ll notice I said 65%, not 100%. I simply meant that someone who posts ignorant, stereotypical statements about another person based on where they live probably was never a student at the University, or anywhere else for that matter. Your entitled to your opinion on the tax plan, but if you do a little research you’ll see that anyone making under about $150,000 stands to see their taxes decrease under Obama. Maybe that doesn’t apply to you, but for a recent grad like myself it certainly could come in handy for me. However, that is not the reason I’m voting for Obama. I voted for Bush in 2004, and I’m simply tired of the Republicans trying to scare up votes. I thought McCain would be different, but he’s still using the same tactics. Why not though? It seems to work. Anyways, Go Dawgs! Be loud on Saturday!

totally agree that $150000 and under will hopefully pay less taxes if obama follows through and you have every right to your opinion….simply think obama can’t be trusted to protect our country from the islamic threat..women, men and children should be afraid of islam…muslim countries are extremely dangerous and they hate america obviously…enough said…

Enough with the politics. This is not Wooten’s board. Any level headed person knows Barack Hussein Obama is not the man for the job.

Let’s all be loud Sat. and get hunkered down for a great season. Go Dawgs!

Matt is a dolt.

CU, I assume, is Colorado who won with 5 downs in 1990 and had to share the MNC with the techsters. BTW, if it is Colorado…you are a kid pretending to know something as Colorado is University of Colorado which is UC. If its clemson, well, we own clemson.

UGA was classy enough to let the UC bring their mascot and run it on to the field. I believe that is the only roadtrip for that thing.

Also, Ralphie is a girl. Uga is a MAN!!!

How ‘bout that Dawg… Loaran’s Best Uga VII!!!!!!

Alabama will beat Clemson because:

Alabama is Alabama and,

Clemson is Clemson

Little worried about the Vols going to UCLA, we have the talent but they have Chow and we have Chavis.

I do not believe all of the hype about Clemson beating Alabama…….Yes Clemson has a great running game and a very strong offense but if you look at Alabama’s season last year you will realize that they only lost by a touchdown or less in all of their games against teams that are “no offense” better than Clemson including Georgia in OT. I say Alabama will win 24-21. And by the way i love any SEC team but it’s a damn dog get over it.

Dear Matt. Didn’t your precious CU SHARE that national championship? And with a team from GEORGIA??? If you hate it down here so much, why keeping up with what’s going on? Nothing to do there in Colorado in the summer? I guess not. There’s not SH*T to do there in the winter, either! Let’s strap some logs to our feet and go fly down a mountain! That’s cosmopolitan as hell! Why don’t you get some hot chocolate, snuggle up with your fat boyfriend, and wait for the Broncos to suck again this year?

All of you DAWG fans are giving the SEC a bad rap……Georgia will not always win….you seem to forget that the SEC is the best conference in the country and that the Dawgs have alot of serious competition. Your potential losses are Alabama, LSU, Kentucky, Tennessee, Florida and Auburn….be ready for at least one of them to beat you. I believe that when you meet either LSU or Alabama in the SEC championship game you may very well lose. I agree that Georgia will kill South Carolina tho….

hope bama beats clemson …main goal for sec….evidently according to barnhart earlier this summer clemson snuck off and played in a summer league since they supposedly looked better than bama….get a life tony…play a little golf or something surely you haven’t been camping out in clemson all summer…big dawg fan chris ..i just think we’re excited..we really are loaded at every position but tough road ahead….dawgs haven’t been #1 in forever like all college schools’ fans would be we’re excited…big deflation if we lose

plenty of people give the Dawgs their due out here in the West—-Ive been here 13 years and everyone I know understands football and better yet SEC football. PAC 10 is decent but beyond USC nobody can play—of course, we will find out 9/20 in Tempe. ASU has no idea the speed we will bring—well they might —they saw a glimpse when Texas beat them down in the bowl game. Chris you left out the other 6 teams we play as “potential losses” — evry game is a potential loss Einstein—-DAWGS!!

desertdawg,

I hear ya on the state of things in the PAC 1 and YES the SEC is the best conference top to bottom! I am going to admitt something here. I grew up playing the Wishbone offense at Cordova High, Rancho Cordova, CA. we used the entire ‘Bama playbook including cadence. We also enjoyed ‘Bama like success throughout the ‘70’s (107-3-1) Because of that I have always had a special place in my heart for the Crimson Tide! RTR!!!

By SC Rules!!!

August 29, 2008 11:39 PM | Link to this

desertdawg,

I agree with your statement about the speed that the Dawgs will bring to Tempe. Texas put an a$$ whoopin’ on the suntans in the bowl because of that speed. USC also crushed the suntans with exceptional speed, probably one of the few non-SEC teams with such speed. Texas & SC play at SEC like speed and as such enjoy much success. Just remember though that desert heat will take it out of ya in a hurry. Yes the South (my beloved South!) has the humididty and that is somethin’ but if the Dawgs aren’t prepared for it they may find themselves in a hurt’n way come the 4th qtr.

Clemson is going to hand it to Alabama badly. They don’t have the depth to compete w/a team as talented as Clemson. Also, I believe Tennessee will suprise alot of people this year. No…I am certainly not a fan of either team. This is just my personal opinion. Also, since we are talking about politics, how in the hell could anyone who is American vote for someone like Obama? Very close to Osama isn’t it?

I’m a country boy thru and thru & a die-hard BULLDOG; but I am no bigot! Some of you make me ashamed I live here in Ga; no wonder people make fun of southerners; I hope he becomes president so you and others will see that no one person can bring down this great democracy! AND that he will actually be a great leader(dark skin and all)-then what will you have to justify your racist beliefs on? I VOTE PERSON- NOT PARTY, COLOR, OR RELIGION ps. You’re so narrow minded, you probably are upset that a WOMAN has been picked for vice-president.

By Chris in Bama

August 30, 2008 4:09 AM | Link to this

Reggie I would like to know why you think Clemson will hand Alabama their a$$ badly…You have to remember that Alabama is used to VERY tough games since they do play all SEC teams such as #1 UGA, #11 Auburn, #7 LSU….Believe it or not Bama has a VERY potent offense this year… Clemson is notoriously bad about giving up big plays on the punt return and that is not a good thing when Javier Arenas is returning the ball..Clemson is not used to playing against very talented SEC teams….they play in the ACC which is not the same caliber football that Bama is used to…..additionally Bama lost by a touchdown or less last year on every loss they had…24-21 Bama

By Chris in Bama

August 30, 2008 4:20 AM | Link to this

jb.. You need to pull your head out of your a$$ and realize that it isn’t a race thing…as a matter of fact Obama will probably win the election despite the fact he doesn’t have my vote…I am not voting for McCain either, i believe that we are screwed either way. I voted for Bush and at this point I wish I hadn’t. However I don’t like the fact that a democrat will be elected because they do not have the morals and values that I firmly believe in. Most of the tree hugging democrats are too ignorant to realize that we need to drill for oil on our own soil and stop relying on foreign oil…Also if Osama is elected it wont be long before stem cell research and abortion are 100% legalized…my question is whats next..

Joe, did you see who SC was playing? The Red Devils from Lincoln County are better than the Wolfpack. You are just another delusional chicken who thinks one win over a lame opponent makes up for a decade of ineptness. Your QB will be running for his life 9/13.

Chris in Bama,

Here here! My friend you hit it right on the nail head, even though I’m a “left” coaster, I’m NO damned tree hugging freak! This election is about more than skin color or ethnicity it is about the very fiber and beliefs we as Americans stand for! We have MORE than enough oil under U.S. soil we also need to build refineries! The Dumacraps need to realize that just like our passion for college football, Americans are winners in the world arena, we want to be #1! Not this “can’t we all just get along and have group hug?” Here’s to another GREAT season of college football! hopefully without the pile of bullfeathers ending we ended up with thansk to the Dumacrap BCS!!!

Tony: Speaking of the quarterback situation at USC, I was just wondering: Is Mitch Mustain’s mama complaining to Pete Carol about her son being dropped to third string? Watch out for your cell phone records Pete… these people are serious.

August 30, 2008 2:47 PM | Link to this

Uncle Dave,

Nah, Coach Carroll is cool on the phone thang. He will just take ole Mitch into the equipment room and put an a$$ whoopin’ on him if he and Momma get out of line. Remeber Pete has ONE motto: “No One person is bigger than the team”! Just ask Coach Chow how things go when you forget that! I’m sure he really enjoyed his exile in Tenn! (NOT) Then again it’s not like things have improved for him on that front after all he’s joined up with Slick Rick and the tree huggers in Baby Blue from across town. Think of it like the situation that Spurrier finds himself in in Chickenfeather land only Spurrier will get a few better athletes to work with than Chow will see before Slick Rick finds the heat to much and blames/fires Norm.
