Crowe says Tech will win an ACC title
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s Friday and we’re only one week away from the first “Fearless Friday Forecast” of the 2008 season.
On Fridays I like to start this blog and see where the spirit will lead me. So here is some random stuff that just caught my attention this week:
1. Crowe says Georgia Tech will win an ACC championship under Johnson: Jacksonville State coach Jack Crowe has every reason to say nice things about Paul Johnson, the new head coach at Georgia Tech. Crowe brings his Gamecock team to historic Bobby Dodd Stadium next Thursday night.
But Crowe said he is not just being nice when he predicts that Georgia Tech will win an ACC championship under Johnson. He’s just looking at the film.
“I can’t tell you when it’s going to be but I’ve seen Paul’s offense and I know how he coaches,” said Crowe, the former head coach at Arkansas. “He will finally get to run his system with a better caliber of athlete than he was able to get at Navy. People in the ACC will see the offense only one time each year and basically have only four days to get ready for it. That makes a huge difference.
“Give him some time to get his kind of players into his system. When his offense is run right, you can’t believe how much pressure it puts on a defense.”
2. An SEC officiating crew will work Alabama-Clemson: Somebody asked me this week which league, the SEC or ACC, would provide the officials for next week’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff between Alabama and Clemson game at the Georgia Dome. Normally, the league represented by the visiting school provides the game officials. When Florida plays at Florida State, for example, SEC officials work the game.
But this is a neutral site game. I did some calling around and it turns out that in the negotiations between Alabama and Clemson, it was agreed to make Clemson the designated home team and thus the Tigers get to wear their orange jerseys. In exchange SEC officials were chosen to work the game. It was no more complicated than that.
3. Alabama-Virginia Tech deal not done yet: I called Gary Stokan of the Atlanta Sports Council to see where things stood on next year’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff. Virginia Tech has already committed to play. Alabama coach Nick Saban wants to come back but there are still some scheduling issues that have not been resolved. Specifically, Alabama needs to move a road game with Tulane, set for 2009, to another season and find another home opponent. That would give Alabama seven home games in 2009 and leave one game free to come back to Atlanta.
A lot of people are starting to get involved in this one. ESPN may yet flex its muscles and become the ultimate broker.
“We’re working on it but we haven’t gotten it done yet,” said Stokan. “I just know that Nick wants to do it if the scheduling issues can be resolved.”
Prediction: The deal will get done because Saban knows the recruiting bump he’ll get by playing in this year’s game and next year’s game in Atlanta. Because of the corporate involvement by Chick-fil-A and The Home Depot, ESPN and College Game Day are locked in to this game as long as the match-up is strong. Too many people stand to benefit from this game. It will happen.
4. ESPN, SEC may be hatching another big deal: Last week the SEC made a 15-year deal with CBS to televise that league’s national game of the week. I’m hearing that ESPN is thinking seriously about also signing a 15-year deal with the SEC as well. But this deal may have an interesting twist. Under this deal ESPN would purchase all of the remaining television rights that CBS does not own.
Why would ESPN do this? Simple. If ESPN owned the remaining rights, it could put several SEC games on its various platforms (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN360) and then, whatever rights it had left and did not want, it could sell back to a group like Raycom or even Comcast. Distribution, however, could be an issue because a lot of cable systems do not carry ESPNU or 360 on their basic package. And those distribution issues could ultimately complicate the deal. Some of those distribution issues could be addressed by video streaming on the Internet, which is going to be a big part of these future TV deals.
Now to do all this ESPN would have to pony up some pretty big bucks over a long period of time. But the network has shown it is willing to pay handsomely for college football.
Stay tuned. As big as the CBS deal was for the SEC, this one will not be far behind if it happens.
And consider this: Last year the SEC made $50.6 million from its TV rights for regular season football. If this deal gets done, I’m hearing that that figure could almost double.
5. Warren a big get for Tennessee: The NCAA has finally cleared tight end Brandon Warren to play for Tennessee this season. Warren, you’ll remember, is from Alcoa, Tenn., just a short trip from Knoxville. He originally signed with Florida State and, after a freshman season in 2006 where he caught 27 passes for 301 yards for the Seminoles, wanted to come home and attend Tennessee. His mother had been diagnosed with cancer.
For reasons still unclear, FSU coach Bobby Bowden would not release Warren from his scholarship. That began a long and winding process to get Warren eligible for 2008. That process is now over.
Here is what matters now. If Warren plays as good as he looks in a uniform, he will be a great weapon for new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson. I talked to the coaches about Warren when I was there earlier this summer and saw the kid practice. With his size, speed and good hands, he is certainly the best tight end Tennessee has had since Jason Witten.
This Tennessee offense will be marked by its ability to move players around to create mismatches with the defense. Warren gives Clawson another tool that will enable him to do that.

Excerpt from The Tennessean…
“I love defense,” Warren said. “If I can get over there for three or four snaps a game, I’d definitely love that.”
Warren was a five-star recruit out of Alcoa High School in 2006 and the nation’s No. 2 weak-side defensive end prospect, according to Rivals.com.

I’ll tell you why Bobby would not Warren go to Tennessee, because Bobby is a jerk. Bobby is still upset at UT for beating them in the National Championship game in Arizona. He will do everything he can to prevent one of his players from tranferring to UT.
Devard Darling was going to transfer to UT after his brother died while working out at FSU. Bobby would not allow him to transfer to UT, and he ended up going to Washington State. Bobby is always talking about family and going the right thing, but what it comes to players leaving FSU it’s another story.

I would think that Dawg fans here in Atlanta would be concerned about the exposure that the ASC is providing to ‘Bama here in their back yard. I am pretty sure Tech fans aren’t happy about it either. The ASC should be ‘forced’ to showcase the in state schools here, not out of state schools like ‘Bama. Not good for any of us long term. Not smart by the ASC.

tony in regards to your article on jacksonville’s state’s mutual admiration society for tech’s newest victim(paul johnson) and the acc title which is very doubtful but could happen as they are currently tied for first course this is august. one question on your article though. When did bobby dodd stadium become historic ? i knew mister dodd quite well, grew up playing peewee basketball with his grandson, joe thompson, mr. dodd was a fine gentleman and obviously he was the last great and faithful coach at ga. tech. but the only reason that stadium could possibly be considered historic is because it bears his great name, not because of the sorry football that has been played there for the past 50 years. paul johnson may be a great coach but its hard to coach where the talent pool is mediocre regardless of your coaching skills

I’m sorry, but that’s just not accurate. Bobby not wanting to release Warren’s scholarship had nothing to do with UT’s championship in 1998. He didn’t release him from his scholarship b/c Warren’s mother had the same medical condition the year before when Warren chose to come to FSU and her condition hadn’t worsened. So Warren requesting a “hardship” and asking to not have to sit out a year due to his mom’s condition shouldn’t have been granted…
Also, Rae Sykes, one of UT’s signees, came to FSU on an official visit and “recruited” Warren to come back home and play for UT. Warren hit it off with Sykes, left the following weekend, and was never heard from again… Some feel the Fulmer camp “recruited” him back to UT, others don’t…
But regardless, your thinking is WAY off. There’s two sides to every story - and FSU’s side hasn’t been told. Bobby’s granted PLENTY of transfers to players over the years for numerous reasons. And to say Bobby is a jerk is ridiculous - he’s one of the classiest coaches in all of college football.

Not exactly ‘ol Bobby’s finest moment. At least it appears to have worked out for Warren.
Why is ‘Bama the only choice for next years CFA Kickoff game? I would think some of the other SEC teams might want in on that.

The Warren situation: Sykes was a high school teammate of Warren’s at Alocoa High School (Tornadoes). Sykes went to FSU for his visit. He and Warren had been friends a long time. I’m not sure but as I understood Warrens mom became sick (with cancer) or at least worsened AFTER Warrens freshman year. My own opinion is that when Warren saw his pal, and his Pal saw the direction of the FSU program and doubts about who would be his coach at FSU he decided UT was best for him. I would alson guess that he asked Warren why he wouldn’t come back to UT so they could be mates again.

Let me get this straight. They want to keep having Alabama play in this game at the Dome? Major slap in the face to Tech and UGA. I know ‘Bama and Clemson will draw a huge crowd, but let’s be honest…who are the 2 most dispointing D-1 programs in the last 6 years? Answer…you will see them next Saturday at the dome.

NorthwestGAdawg,
Grant Field is the oldest stadium in div1-A. It was built in 1913, and the only stadiums that are older are Yale’s and Harvard’s. That’s why it’s historic.
The “Bobby Dodd Stadium” part didn’t come until the early 80’s.

northwestgeorgiadawg,
Are you as dumb as you rname predicts?More NC have been brought back to Bobby Dodd Stadium than sanford stadium. Bobby Dodd set the record for career wins at Tech at 165 career coaching wins including a 31-game winning streak from 1951–1952. He also managed to capture two Southeastern Conference Titles and the 1952 National Title, which concluded a 12-0 perfect season and Sugar Bowl conquest of Ole Miss.
Dodd also understood the deep-seated rivalry with the University of Georgia. His teams won 8 games in a row over the Bulldogs from 1946–1954 outscoring the Bulldogs 176–39 during the winning streak. This 8–game winning streak is still the longest winning streak for either side in the series. Dodd would finish his career with a 12–9 record against the Bulldogs.
The only coach from uga to come close to what Bobby Dodd did was CMR. It is now apparent that you have absolutely no knowledge of uga football much less another school!!!!!!!

Not really talking trash here. I just don’t think it’s a very bold statement to say that “some day” PJ will lead the Jackets to a championship in a weak conference. If someone were to say that Houston Nutt will lead Ole Miss to an SEC championship in the next few years, that would be news worthy.

Response to “me”, your the one who has the facts wrong. Bobby and FSU AD staff told Devard Darling they did want him to play because he also has Sickle Cell Anemia and they did not want to risk another tragic death at FSU. Which they have the right to do, and FSU was going allow him to transfer till they found out he was going to UT. That is when they put a stop to it.
I never said Bobby would not let players transfer, but he will NOT allow them to transfer to UT.
I suggest you stop getting your facts from Warchant.com. They found any proof that Warren was being recruited by UT. If there was proof, Alabama would be doing everything in their power to get UT on probation. The truth about Bobby will come out after he dies. There are too many people that want to protect his legacy while he is alive.

Bobby wouldn’t let Warren go because Warren went AWOL and flew the coop. His mother’s condition hadn’t got any worse. My mom is in remission from breast cancer so don’t sit there and think I don’t understand the the young man’s situation. Any of us that follow FSU and especially Warchant remember the situation a couple years ago, and basically Warren walked out on the school he signed a committment to play for. If Warren would have wanted to transfer to a 1-AA or D-2 closer to home, Bobby would have done that in a heartbeat. (See-Fabian Walker, Lamar Lewis, Damon McDaniel, etc.) Bobby just believes in people being accountable for their actions. It’s a shame that others don’t feel the same way these days. And the doctors wouldn’t clear Darling after his brother’s death, so it was basically the University looking out for itself and not wanting a huge multi-million dollar lawsuit by their family if something else happened. It’s called prudence, and it should extend even to college football.

Don’t forget, Bama has a history of playing big games off campus. Until the expansion of Bryant Denny, virtually all of their games were in Legion Field. Many Bama fans began to get tired of not having games on campus. No matter what school you are a fan of, most of the fun is going back to campus, at your home stadium and enjoying the atmosphere. It will be a good atmosphere in Atlanta but for me, I would much rather be in Athens than in downtown Atlanta for a Georgia game. The game will be great and it will be a great atmosphere because there will be 2 quality teams and 2 great schools represented. For me, and I daresay most college fans, other than the bowl games, I would rather go home and home rather than a neutral site.

First off, Great work to you TECH FAN 81. You hit the nail on the head with your explanation, good research.
Next MIKE, DOES NOBODY is horrible grammar. Next, this has been said time and time again, CPJ’s offense is different from the spread option, or triple option. The offense is MOST LIKE the spread but is a different variation INVENTED BY CPJ back at his days at GA S. and Hawaii. It was then really tested at Navy in which he took a team that hadn’t posted a 10 win season since 1905 to just that in 2006. HE LAUGHS AT YOU WHEN YOU QUESTION HIS OFFENSE.
COACHES WILL GROW UP TO WANT TO BE A COACH LIKE PAUL JOHNSON… ONLY TO BE BEAT BY PAUL JOHNSON.
COACH PAUL JOHNSON COUNTED TO INFINITY… TWICE.
OUTER SPACE EXISTS ONLY BECAUSE IT WAS AFRAID TO OCCUPY THE SAME PLANET COACH PAUL JOHNSON.
Just remember those Johnsonisms and be afraid, because if Paul Johnson can win at Navy, he can do each of the Johnsonism’s above!!!!! :)

Tony, I know it is hard to write about Tech with any conviction and enthusiasm, but I realize that we all must figure out a way to keep the bills paid — so cudos to you my friend. As I am sure you are privately perplexes, so am I. I am at a loss as to what they should do with that program — if we may be so generous as to refer to it as such. It is sad, the degree to which it has fallen from it’s place of relevance back in the 1950s. It seems as though nothing they attempt to do, ever results in sustained success, be it….
Stadium Expansion — clearly the biggest head scratcher of all moves…I guess having a 1/2 filled 50k seat stadium is more impressive than a 1/2-3/4 filled 40k seat stadium
Jacket Packets — 2 hotdogs, 2 cokes and free pizza with each ticket purchased…what an indignity
Annual Uniform Redesign — this year they seemed to up the ante in a desperate attempt to gain attention by creating a jersey color that could otherwise only be found in the diaper of a yam eating 6 month old baby
The New Old Offense Tom Foolery — now they are trying to fool opposing defenses by raiding Emory Bellard’s 1960s offensive playbook — boy, those nutty tricksters on North Ave. will have everyone guessing now Oh well, I guess the opposing DCs will be going back into the vault such storied 1960s/70s matchups between Texas v Oklahoma, Nebraska v Oklahoma, Alabama v Auburn, etc.,

Ever hear of Vince Dooley? Record at UGA 201-77-10 and most importantly record against Tech 19-6. Bobby Dodd’s record against Dooley 0-3. Dooley, 6 SEC championships, 1 National Championship, and a 12-0 record in 1980.
Maybe you should learn the history of Tech and other schools before you start spouting off statistics.
Bobby Dodd was a good man and a good coach. However, it was only 20 to 30 years ago that they decided to name the stadium after Dodd . . always Grant Field before that.

It seems like I continue to be among the few GT fans that firmly believe that GT will be tremendously better in all aspects this year vs. 2007. Forget that its a new offensive scheme/coaches, look at some basics:
Better talented QB(and QB coaching!) = much better QB play than 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007. Pass Offense will be much better(many fewer INTs, like BC, VT, UGA games) Rush Offense will be as good or better this year (2007, RB Choice limited with injuries and RB Grant gone after Army game) Pass Defense will be MUCH better (DC Wommack’s specialty is LBs and DBs; less “Blitz all the time” defense leaving LBs & DBs exposed) Rush Defense is gonna be AWESOME
With all of the glaring weaknesses, GT was still 4-4 in ACC in 2007, with two close, late-game losses to UVA & MD. With GT so much better at just about every position & aspect, why do GT fans doubt that GT will be MUCH MUCH better in 2008 than 2007?? GT will be 5-3 MINIMUM, with 7-1 STRONG possibility in ACC.
As UGA, 04/05/06 games were very close. In 2008, UGA won’t have Reggie & Chan “playing & coaching” for them. 2007 game was much closer than any UGA fan will admit. UGA has two punt return fumbles in the end zone; Morgan Burnett almost scores for GT with fumble recovery; poor UGA punt/kick game; GT has to play 3 different QBs with 3 turnovers including two awful INTs; Burnett flagged for ridiculous pass intereference call on UGA 3rd & 10 at GT 24 giving UGA 1st & goal at GT 9; Moreno runs for only 45 yds vs. GT (ran for 188 yds vs. FL); Brown gets 115 of his 139 yds rushing on ONE SINGLE 4th Qtr drive. Sure, a loss is a loss, but its hardly because UGA was somehow some “great” team. Lucky, yes, great, hardly.
2008 is gonna be a brand new GT team in ALL asspects.

funny how the dawg fans (as hard as they try) cant stop reading an commenting about gt. not a rivalry eh?
than again….
considering all the advantages ugay has over gt…. size, broad curriculum, state flagship university (sic), plays in top conference, tv exposure, the bagman, recruiting nc’s (now that is funny) etc….
and they STILL haven’t won anything of significance as compared to gt since 1980. nada. zilch. zip. and their daddy is steve spurrier. ouch. advantage gt.
-even that lowly program (to dog eyes only) gt has a most recent NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. all those advantages over gt and still the dawgs are delusional. kinda like herschel. advantage gt.
they have what is called the herschel complex. its kinda like herpes (which fits dog fans like lizdog). afterall you expect fans of ugay to have some kind of herpes.
-as up and down as gt has been for 50 years and the dawgs STILL haven’t won 8 games in a row against gt. advantage gt.
when you consider the 3 points above….
when you say that gt has a poor program….
where does that put ugay?
i think that the most telling fact about ugay vs gt is how fans refer to the respective stadiums….
on one hand we have “historic grant field at bobby dodd stadium” and on the other we have the cesspool.
lmao……..
than we have coaching…
gt has national awards named after their coaches… bobby dodd nc of the year. the heisman.
yes vince dooley won but uga got caught cheating every 4 years under his reign. AND the still won NO championships. unless you consider finishing no 1 in recruiting as an accomplishment. talk about UNDERACHIEVEING.
the real shame(NOT) is that ugay even with all those advantages…. with all the cheating they do…. and they still have won NOTHING.
finally…
i don’t think we will see any national awards named after anything associated with ugay. EVER. unless of course its LOW class… such as turning on the sprinklers before teams leave the field or hosing down opposing fans with fire hoses.
gt may not have won as many games against the dogs recently but ill take class over NO CLASS any day.

One more something on Brandon Warren and I’ll yield the floor : The SEC turned Warrens’ appeal over to the NCAA. They ruled in favor of Warren. Bowden got trumped. Commitment or not, it was the right thing to do. Contracts are made to be honored and broken. When they’re broken, a third party may rule. Warren has forfieted some play time, Bowden gets another scholarship. Sounds pretty even-steven to me…Go Vols

It’s not a matter of it being “even-steven” - I was just responding to your original post that claimed Bobby didn’t allow players to transfer to UT b/c they beat FSU in the 1998 national championship game. Which is flat-out not true. The Warren decision, as I commented earlier, goes a lot deeper than that and was made for totally different reasons.
Bobby’s not the one to blame here - he acted as most every other coach would in that situation. To say he’s a “jerk” is ridiculous.

sounds like an old polish joke… ‘how many dawg fb players does it take to beat up one man?’
lets see which is worse? being drunk (a victimless crime) or asault (by drunk muscle bound athletes).
obviously saint richt decided a blow out fracture is no big deal. especially when it could cause uga to lose a nc.
uga fans need to stop throwing stones all things considered.

OLD GT NUT SAID:
“Brown gets 115 of his 139 yds rushing on ONE SINGLE 4th Qtr drive.”
How do you get 115 yrds rushing on 1 drive? Did UGA start at the back of the endzone and they moved the opposite goaline 5 yards into the endzone?
If you are going to make stuff up, at least check it for “logical” before you post.

I stand corrected on Brown rushing:
1 Qtr: a 32 yd rush 2 Qtr: an 18 yd rush 4 Qtr: a 32 yd rush 4 Qtr: a 33 yd rush 4 Primary rushes: 115 of 139 yds rushing.
32 & 33 4 Qtr yds on the one single drive: 65 yds out of total 139 yds.
Again, Lucky…yes; great…hardly.

OK…OLD GT that makes much more sense..
The fact is that UGA is up and Tech is down, for the past 6 or 7 years. It is a cycle just like any other rivalry. Tech was good in late 80s early 90s. Dawgs stunk during the first part of the 90’s. Techies are stinking it up now. Yes, UGA has gotten the best of Tech overall, and probably have a better tradition (at least post 1960s), but it goes up and down. Hopefully it stays this way for a long time….(UGA up)

Tony,
Doesn’t Richt have a problem with ‘Bama playing marquis games here every year in the heart of his recruiting area? I’m pretty sure Paul Johnson does, and it looks like Clemson and VT will benefit as well.
Does the ASC not have ANY political repurcussions from UGA (or GT) by letting this stuff happen?
Compromise idea: Maybe they should have a 3 year rotation: Year One: UGA plays ACC Favorite. Year Two: GT plays SEC Favorite. Year Three: Two outside teams come in (like Bama-Clemson).
I dunno. It seems the ASC would NEED GT and UGA support for Chic-fil-a Bowl practice facilities, emergency arenas when tornoadoes hit, admin staff support from GT for Final fours, etc, etc. etc.
Am I wrong?

I think my favorite memory of the 2008 UGA season was the time Thomas Brown got 115 yards rushing on a single drive in the 4th quarter.
Thank you, “Old GT Nut” for bringing that to my attention. I assume you learned those statistics in Reggie Ball’s math class where he learned to count downs.

As a GT, UGA, AND oldschool AL fan let me tell you how it is.
UGA is dominate in football right now, they have a great coach and great team.
GT will be very good in a few years in football because they also have a good coach, but lets face the facts… NO ACC champion outside of Miami or FSU has enough national recognition to get “voted” into the Title game (the ONLY game that matters!)
What GT really needs to focus on is Mens Basketball. Lets take away some $$ from the football team and get a new assistant coach to help out Hewitt on the bench. Gt Hoops will be a top 10 team in 2009!
And Alabama…the team that i grew up rooting for in the SEC…the team that hasent had a Great coach since Gene Stallings!
They hire traitor Saban…and then proceded to vote AGAINST a playoff system in football! Are they not TIRED of seeing the SEC getting screwed over when it comes to the title game?? Does it REALLY take all schools having to get screwed over like Auburn and Boise State (the REAL UNDEFEATED champs of 2006!)
The stupidity in the politics of college football makes me sick. Whats even worse is some of you idiots support the BCS.
Sorry…but us REAL sports fans wanna see our favorite team in a tournament fighting for the NATIONAL TITLE! NOT fighing for some trophy of a stupid cow and some free chicfillet coupouns!
College Football…where ALL the little kids get a chance to jump around on the field at the end of the year like monkeys yelling “were # 1… i mean #35!”

MUNSON:
FACT:
Sanford was built on top of shoddy sewer lines construction. Few years ago, Sanford had to have MAJOR sewer repair under/around the field after years of sewer line deterioration.
See link: http://media.www.redandblack.com/media/storage/paper871/news/2000/08/30/News/More-Sanford.Runoff-2592447.shtml
Sanford IS a cesspool, because it was built on one. That’s why is has been and continues to be the: “The Cesspool of the South.” Because it is.

Travis Chambers story at GT seems like such a waste, and just one more indictment of Gailey regime. Why did Chambers have to go OUTSIDE the GTAA medical staff to get a correct diagnosis of an orthopedic problem requiring a SURGICAL correction? How come 3 team physicians: Galante, Xerogeanas, and Shoop could not help Chambers get proper care? What is so “politically incorrect” with seeking medical care outside of GTAA, if the team physicians aren’t helping?

Grant Field is not a stadium. It would be a “field” I’m pretty sure. Bobby Dodd Stadium would be a stadium, and yes it has been remodeled, though I don’t know if the sewer has been upgraded like at Sanford stadium.
Do you think you dog fans could come up with something original, and perhaps clever. I don’t mind a good joke at my expense, but these blogs are full of the same old tired jokes.
AJC is not much better, mostly stories about predictions and speculation. What ever happened to reporting some real information. I don’t really care what anybody “thinks” is going to happen. I’m more interested in watching the ball game…and drinking bourbon during the tailgate, of course.

Old GT Nut, For all of your fervent, obsessive rambling, you do make some salient points. I agree with you that the defense will actually be much better under Wommack than under Tenuta. Tenuta was fun at first, but after a while, the constant blitzing became tedious and ineffective. How many times did I scream at the TV on a third and long, “don’t blitz!!!!” only to see GT blitz and give up a big pass play for a first down. It’s no wonder the defense always wore down by the end of the game.
Offensively, no one really knows what to expect from the Jackets this year. It’s totally reasonable to expect an unorganized team that can’t find its way past the 50 yard line, just as it’s totally reasonable to expect the team to get better with each week and by the end of the year be rolling and putting up 30-40 pts per game. I think the key will be the O-line and receivers. If they can block like they are expected to in Johnson’s offense, the QB and RBs will have an accelerated learning curve resulting in a vast improvement from week to week.
The best case scenario is that the defense gives up similar points per game to a Tenuta defense (~20/gm or less) but doesn’t give up big plays like Tenuta’s defenses were known for doing, especially on 3rd downs. Just get the offense back on the field quickly to give them more chances to score.
Cute stats like Most tackles for a loss don’t do any good when stats like opp. 3rd down conv. % is terrible. Especially when opp. avg. 3rd down to go ydg is really good.
Like you, I expect GT to be a much better balanced team on defense. The thing to remember is that the team is young. Look at UF’s defense last year. They get very good recruits, but the youth on their defense was a huge liability. So while the D-Line should be killer, you gotta remember that the linebackers and d-backs will blow assignments and coverage constantly.
Best case scenario should be the defense plays well enough to keep the team in games early in the year allowing the offense to handle the team’s destiny. So even if the offense is slow at first, they will still have chances to put points on the board, even if they fail. My biggest pet peeve with Tenuta’s D was that at crucial times in games where the offense at least needed chances, they never seemed to get those chances. When opposing teams would have been content with a 3 and out and a long punt, the D would keep pushing and be vulnerable to big plays that kept the clock running or gave the offense worse field position. Hopefully, the D this year won’t be coached that way and will at least be trying to get the ball back to the offense, even if the offense is terrible, especially early in the year.
Offensively, best case scenario is probably that it takes half a year to get the offense starting to click in something other than 1st gear. It would be nice if we have a situation like that at North Texas last year where the offense was good from start to finish, but the competition will be much tougher than theirs, so I expect at least half a year or longer to see the offense putting together CPJ-esque numbers. Unfortunately, as someone pointed out in some other board, big scoring offenses usually come at the expense of the defense. And that was clearly the case at North Texas last year, as they lost games by scores of like 60-50 (exaggeration of course, but you see the point). In fact, the same thing happened at Nebraska with Callahan. So my biggest hope is that the defense plays well enough to keep the team in games, otherwise, it could be a long year. As long as GT shows grit and determination, I will consider this year to be a success. Under Gailey, you couldn’t always count on a dogged determination from the coaches on down from start to finish. It seemed like the coaches were too stubborn in their philosophies to try something different in games that weren’t going their way.
Also, I think GT might end up like Oregon of the East uniform wise. It might not be a bad thing. Might get people at least talking about GT.

GOOD CONTRIBUTION.
Best SEC coach and best national coach ever has to have been the Bear. How many other coaches developed top national teams at 4 REPEAT FOUR major schools - - Kentucky, Maryland, Texas AM, Bama? I’m not a Bear fan, but his first year at A&M they won one game - - in Athens! That’s the only time I cheered a Bryant team. The Bear was one of the reasons Bobby Dodd took Tech out of the ACC. Other reasons were the Falcons coming to Atlanta and SEC policies that allowed other schools to shift scholarships to better players.
Another facet of Tech athletics during the Dodd years - - check the win-loss in other sports programs. Tech was a one-sports program.

TONY: Alabama playing in the Dome is NOT going to hrt Mark Richt’s recruiting. I can’t believe you think he will get some kind of “bump” recruiting Georgia. Every coach has tried in vain to slow the Richt recruiting juggernaut and failed. Just because Saban is on the cover of Forbes does not mean he is going to gain some sort of power edge over Mark Richt. Georgia is a Top 5 power now, and there isn’t a dam thing anyone can do to stop it. Not a coach, not the media, not a game at the Dome. Kids want to play at UGA…BADLY. That isn’t going to change, and you can tell Saban, Meyer, Foolmer, Spurrier, etc. for me. Read it and weep.
