An early look at Jacksonville State

Jacksonville, Ala. - A week from tomorrow, Georgia Tech will open the 2008 season against Division I-AA Jacksonville State. There will two major story lines in the game:

• Georgia Tech’s first game under new coach Paul Johnson.

• The debut of Jacksonville State quarterback Ryan Perrilloux, the transfer from LSU.

Perrilloux was the MVP of the SEC championship game last December when LSU beat Tennessee 21-14. Had he remained at LSU, Perrilloux would now be the starting quarterback for the defending national champions. But he didn’t stay. He was kicked off the team.

On Tuesday I had lunch with Perrilloux and his new head coach, Jack Crowe. I’m working on a story for next week about Perrilloux’s long and winding road to Jacksonville State and how much he is looking forward to next week’s game with Georgia Tech. But for now I want to share five nuggets of information with you about Jacksonville State that will not make the story:

1. Georgia Tech got a good deal: Crowe made the deal to play at Georgia Tech because of his old friend, Chan Gailey, the Yellow Jackets’ former coach.

“Financially, we need to play a BCS team every year if we can,” Crowe said. “When I can play my friends I like to do that.”

And Georgia Tech got the good friend discount when it signed a two-game deal with Jacksonville State.

Jacksonville State is receiving a guaranteed payment of about $200,000 to make the two-hour drive and play next week. In today’s market that is a steal.

Division I-AA Appalachian State got $400,000 to play at Michigan (and beat the Wolverines) last season. App State is getting $550,000 to open the season at LSU. Sun Belt conference teams are getting as much as $1 million from SEC schools for a single game.

“In future contracts we’re going to have to get a bump,” said Crowe.

Jacksonville State is supposed to come back to Georgia Tech again in 2009. But if the school gets a better offer from an SEC school, don’t be surprised if it tries to buy its way out of the deal.

2. Crowe asked Richt for advice: Crowe, a former assistant at Auburn and Clemson and (briefly) the head coach at Arkansas, has been head coach at Jacksonville State since 2000 and won the Ohio Valley conference championship in 2003 and 2004. But after three straight seasons at 6-5 he saw the program slipping. The problem, as he saw it, was in leadership.

“I just thought there was something missing,” he said. “We were losing close games because we just didn’t have the leadership that a program should have. And as coaches we weren’t developing leadership.”

So Crowe consulted two coaches he believed excelled when it came to teaching leadership: Mark Richt of Georgia and Mack Brown of Texas.

“We adopted a lot of their principles and we immediately have been able to tell a difference,” Crowe said.

3. There will be two No. 11s against Tech: When Perrilloux arrived in May, No. 11 had already been given to freshman quarterback Marques Ivory from Warner Robins. Marques had made it very clear during his recruitment that he wanted to wear No. 11.

Perrilloux wore No. 11 at LSU and has been wearing the number since junior high football and basketball.

“I was pretty attached to my number,” Perrilloux said.

So Crowe decided that both players would wear No. 11 this season.

“Maybe we’ll play both of them and no one will notice the difference,” Crowe said.

Doubtful. Perrilloux (6-3, 235) kind of stands out in a crowd.

4. Ivory will get on the field against Tech: Ivory has the distinction of never having lost a game that he started as a quarterback. He was 30-0 and led Northside High School to back-to-back state championships in 2006 and 2007.

There are only three quarterbacks on scholarship at Jacksonville State: Perrilloux, Ivory, and Brooks Robinson, another freshman. Crowe plans to get Ivory (6-1, 235) on the field against Georgia Tech.

“I like to work my backup into the game about the third series so that he’s not under time pressure,” Crowe said. “Ivory is a good athlete and we’re excited about what he can do.”

Understand this. When Perrilloux agreed to come to Jacksonville State, there was not a scholarship quarterback on campus. Crowe had kicked his projected starter off the team. So Perrilloux came here knowing he was the starter from day one. That, as we will explain in next week’s story, is a big reason why he is here.

5. Crowe worried about Tech DL: When the discussion came to the Georgia Tech game, Crowe spent a lot of time praising the Yellow Jackets’ defensive line.

“If they are not the best defensive line the country, I’d be afraid of who is,” said Crowe.

We talked about Tech’s two great tackles, Vance Walker and Darryl Richard, and end Michael Johnson, who a lot of people believe is going to have a huge season.

“And people are telling me the young guy (sophomore end Derrick Morgan) is a really good young talent,” Crowe said.

Crowe is concerned because the youngest part of his team is the offensive line.

“I wish we were a little older up front, especially going against those guys at Tech,” he said.

A few bonus nuggets about Jacksonville State:

• Despite the youth on the offensive line, Crowe says this is the most talented team that he’s had at Jacksonville State. “I don’t want people to get the wrong idea about us,” Crowe said. “We respect Georgia Tech but we won’t be intimidated from a talent standpoint.”

• Jacksonville State, located about 20 minutes north of Anniston, is the only school in the history of the NCAA to have national championships in football, basketball and baseball. Only six other NCAA schools have won championships in football and basketball (Michigan, Michigan State, Florida, Ohio State, North Alabama and Wittenberg).

• Remember Ashley Martin? The native of Sharpsburg, Ga., was the first female in history to score a point in an NCAA football game. She kicked a couple of extra points for Jax State in a 72-10 win over Cumberland on Aug. 30, 2001.

• Randy Owen, the lead singer for the country music group ALABAMA, is a JSU grad and a member of the school’s Board of Trustees.

Shame on JSU for taking Perrilloux. Word is he has* several* speeding tickets around Jacksonville already. Still driving that shiny* prize *he got from LSU.

What? slow day in Athens? Nothing boring to report from 2008’s soon to be most overhyped and dissapointing team!!

Roswell Ed. What makes UGA overhyped? The fact that many polls have us rated Number 1? The fact that several publications have us on their cover? There is nowhere for us to go but down. We could lose just one game and you would say we were disappointing. “Lighten up Francis”! What’s wrong, nowhere to go and post auburn stuff. Just how good do you think AU will be?

AU will be a joke this year!!! Fights in practice, players out for the season because of fights, players transferring because he got a gang-style beatdown, so-called top-line defense has to borrow tight ends to play the d-line. I thought this defense was suppose to be “one of the best Tubbs has had”???? 2 New coordinators, 2 QB’s, Players out for various reasons, sounds like a real recipe for failure!!! 7-5, 8-4 Get used to it Barners!!!! Julio will destroy that secondary this year, Green from GA will destroy that secondary, Lafells from LSU will destroy that secondary, Pat white will destroy that secondary!!!

Thanks for the update on JSU, im sure there are more than a few people on here who just now figured out it is in Bama. And even though you didn’t mention uga, au, or UF, im sure that this will end up an argument about them.

On a seperate note, and as much as it pains me to say this, im going to bring it up… You guys crap all over ugay for each and every incident (real or not) on a weekly basis. T-Moore has written 2 articles, that were pretty much the exact same (boneheads) regarding thUGA. You dont even MENTION perilloux and his troubles in this article (accept that he was kicked of the team, and thats it)… Now I realize that is because thUGA is preseason #1 and gets a lot more attention than JSU, but come on. The least you could do would be to mention counterfeiting, fake ids, fights, etc. as to WHY he is at JSU now.

GT fans, read that again:

“If they(GT) are not the best defensive line the country, I’d be afraid of who is,” said Crowe. (Jack Crowe, HC Jax State)

GT will have THE BEST overall defense in the ACC. Nobody in the ACC is going to be able to run on GT this year. NOBODY!! That’s when teams will try to start passing, and GT’s defense is going to be ready. I expect MANY INTs by GT defense this year.

GT defense is going to C-R-U-S-H several teams this year.

Tony, according to NCAA records, Michigan won the college WS in 1953 and OSU did in 1966. Let’s give both these programs their due as it appears that they’ve won titles in all three sports as well.

The “G” stands for Georgia, you big dummy!

GT, good post. The sad thing is problems with college age youth is not limited to just football players. Many people take great joy in pointing to the troubles of another university’s athletes. I even saw some point fingers to the “out of control” GT baseball program after a player died of a drug overdose. (Out of respect for the family I didn’t mention his name). Some Tennessee fans were slamming UGA over their problems when someone posted a link that said 9 UT players were either arrested or kicked off the team in a 38 day period this offseason. It’s just sad.

Now to get back on point. I think GT will really surprise some teams this year. Even though you have a new coach and offense, I really expect no fewer than 7 wins. Could even sneak in another one. Good luck, but hoping to make it 8 straight.

Something tells me this could be a very interesting game. Georgia Tech NEVER plays a D-1aa team that is any good. To their credit, they don’t play D-1aa teams at all most years. Nevertheless, the point remains. They are accustomed to playing lower division football teams that they can simply step on to the field and overpower. Jackonsville State is not such a team. Their refusal to schedule Georgia Southern is well documented. Lord knows they wouldn’t touch Appalaichan State with a 30 foot pole right now. Jacksonville State will be a good team with Perriloux, as long as he keeps his head on straight. Georgia Tech is breaking in a new offense with new players and apparently can’t hold on to the football. The game will not be on television and the stadium will be half empty. Its going to be real easy for this very young and inexperienced team to overlook Jacksonville State with Boston College and VT on the horizon. I’m not making any predictions. I’m just saying….

I’m picking JSU!!! Tech’s D-Line will NOT be better than those of most schools (UGA, UF, MIA,USC,OH ST., TN,etc.).

The ACC is a JOKE!!!!!

That’s why they are being so optimistic!!!!

GT wouldn’t be able to survive in a tough conference, like the SEC.

Mississippi State could rip a hole in GT’s D.

If GT’s Defense will be so good, GT should be in the National Championship Race. right?

Defense wins Championships, Right?

Easy Saint Nick:

As a Tide supporter, we need to take serious inventory of OUR program first. We have multiple character issues on our squad (though not as bad as UGA), and comparing Auburn players getting in a scrap or two during two-a-days isn’t the same as one of our guys dealing coke in the shadow of Bryant-Denny. I would love to believe the hype and think we’re going to make waves this year, and we very well may. The bottom line is: we have a mercenary coach who will leave in the next 2-3 years, and a fan base that is still living in the past. It’s time to shift paradigms and see that the SEC is so balanced, we can’t expect to beat the Auburns, Georgias, Floridas, and other conference teams year in and year out. This isn’t to say we won’t have a good team from time to time. I just refuse to be such a backwoods redneck and think the Tide will just plow through everyone - especially Auburn, who has beat our butts for several years in a row now. Welcome to the new age of parity in the SEC. Love it or hate it, it has made OUR conference the most entertaining in NCAA football.

BuzzFactor- Ahh, I see that. I still feel that a little more could have been mentioned, but yes, I stand corrected.

I am excited for football to start, holy crap. The last 10 days are always the absolute worst. The preseason stuff has all been written and argued 10,000 times, lets just play some damn football.

God I hope we don’t lose this game. I can’t REALLY imagine it happening, but as a GT fan, I have learned to know better… Old GT Nut, I do enjoy your optimism, no matter how over the top and semi-retarded it is.

Fred G. Sanford- it is certainly said how the media revels in the bad decisions that some young men make (no matter how minor). I also despise the way that the screw up makes the front page, but if/when charges are dropped, thats always tucked away in the very back. Its nearly slander. I appreciate your optimism for GT this year. I wish the dogs well, except for Nov. 29th. That schedule is killer though (as we are all well aware) but with a little luck, who knows.

Have a great time hanging your hat on beating FRAN once, while he was talking contracts with A&M, Alabama’s version of Barfield 4 times( oh, how many did we win in a row?)and Saban once with a bunch of knucklehead seniors. AT the end of this year see if you can run your mouth. The last ten years, Barners have had 3 10 wins seasons and one SECC. Alabama has had 3 10 win seasons and an SECC. Bama has had 10 win seasons in 96,99,02,05 even you Barners can see the trend!!!!

I thought Jacksonville State might have a shot at an upsetting Tech until I read about there youth on the OL. If both offenses struggle (GT due to the transition & JSU due to the young OL) they still might be able to win it close late. It surprises me that Marques Ivory is at this level I figured he’d be a D1-BSD player. To me that’s a great signing by JSU. I wonder if they have some skill players to compliment there QB’s if they do with a good OL & defense they could be good in there conference. If I’m JSU to counter act the GT DL we spread’em out go out of a gun & no huddle then throw some quick hitters, runs some option stuff & let our QB’s improvise. Meanwhile play assignment D then hope GT struggles & fumbles enough with there O to keep us in the game. Realistically they probably have no shot unless Tech helps them out A LOT!

I don’t care HOW this team does it, but the score better NOT be close. It is past time to find a LITTLE HEART and win a game like your supposed to win! Chan Gailey’s teams were obviously under motivated, and lacking in HEART as witnessed at the losses both at the nut bowl and the blue turf bowl. I have NO delusions that we will win every game this year, but I had better see a different player on the field, a player that does not QUIT! Win or Lose NOBODY likes a quitter. I am DONE with the era of Chan Gailey football, losers and quitters…. Its time to leave it all on the field! This will be a BIG test for our new leader Coach Johnson, and only time will tell!

And no mention of the double standard??? I’d like to know what Jax St’s original QB did that got him kicked off the team that is somehow worse than what Perrilloux did to get kicked off LSU. But because Perrilloux was a big time recruit and has big time talent, he was afforded numerous 2nd chances at LSU and now a new start at Jax St. What a joke?!?! No matter, he’ll be humbled next week when he realizes his foolishness has him playing with lesser talent and GT’s D-Line will crush him.

RollTide8497,

I can’t believe I actually found a sensible Alabama fan on a message board. That makes three that I now know of counting the two guys I had a few beers with last year in Tuscaloosa before the Georgia game. They were actually willing to admit that Nick Saban was NOT the messiah. Keep spreading the knowledge.

In regards to JSU and GT, I’m going to go ahead and predict that this will be a very close game; even leaning to JSU winning at this point. However, GT will get its act together soon enough (much like Michigan did after App. St. last year) and be a pretty good team by the end of the season when they come to Athens (it’ll be closer than a lot of Georgia fans want to admit); they’ll suprise some people along the way too. Tech easily makes a bowl game this year.

Honest Abe,

I completely agree with your comments. JSU is no patsy and will be a very dangerous first game for Tech. However, I also think that Paul Johnson is doing a masterful job of toughening up his football program from top to bottom. One week out from the first game and his staff still hasn’t committed starting roles for half the positions. He has made it clear that the star system isn’t going to cut it at Tech any longer and that players are going to have to compete for playing time by performing up to expectations every snap, every practice and every game.

Someone’s going to have to explain to me why paying Jax State $200,000 to play a glorified scrimmage is a good deal. Sounds like we’re paying $200,000 too much. Best case senario is we get a win that doesn’t count (only one win against FCS teams counts to the Bowl requirement and we play two this season). Worst case is App. State over Michigan where you become the laughing stock of the nation.

Great deal.

GT Fans:

Take a look at the team-by-team reviews of the ACC at www.athlonsports.com from spring. The assessments are much more well analyzed and constructed than anything from 790, ESPN, or CNNSI.

After seeing those reviews outlining the HUGE position/team weaknesses at BC, VT and CU, try to explain why you don’t see that GT will BLAST all three of these teams.

When you see these reviews, you’ll understand that there is NO WAY…in the HE**…that CU is gonna winthe ACC title. Nor will VT even get to the title game.

I maintain that GT will win ACC-Coastal and play probably FSU, for ACC Title.

harley dawg - that’s a pretty lame point. D wins championships, but D’s don’t do the scoring. If Tech had a proven offense, we probably would be mentioned as an elite program. I’ll also add that if you showed up to a single GT practice, you’d see just how hard our boys train. Even the AJC wrote an article about how odd it was that we practiced full speed, full contact. Jax St. probably does work hard, but to suggest the GT doesn’t is just stupid. We’ll see on the 28th how hard Jax St worked. We’ll also see just how good or bad the GT defense will be. Unlike the UGA fan base, I’ll let my team do the talking instead of spouting off about how good we are. The proving ground is on the field, not on the AJC message boards.

Tony you forgot to include the Free Coke and Pizza Tech threw into the deal with Jax State. BTW- Please ask someone in the Ad Dept to can the Tech ad on the UGA area. It’s annoying as heck and I don’t think the demographics fit the typical Tech Fan. Bottomline they wouldn’t know a winner if it …well you get the picture.

The only reason I read this blog is because it was about Jacksonville State and I love any story about cocks.

the acc must have revenue sharing how else could virginia, duke and ga tech afford to build stadiums that hold 30000 fans that pull for losing teams. fresno state isn’t invited to the acc schedule because they don’t need to face any more dawgs

The game might be a decent one, but the halftime show that The Marching Southerners of JSU will put on will be worth EVERY bit the price of admission. They are the BEST college marching band in the country, BAR NONE!

Tony,

Read your top questions and team breakdown for the ACC in Sunday, August the 24ths edition of the AJC. It’s bad enough you couldn’t find Virginia Tech to be the best at anything from a tradition standpoint but then you misquoted VT to have lost at Miami 2 years ago. VT won that game 17-10. Isn’t is the Hokies who have won 2 ACC Championships and lost another vs. FSU since joining the ACC? Yes, it is.
