What the SEC/CBS deal really means
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Nobody asked me, but this morning I believe:
1. The CBS deal seals Mike Slive’s legacy as SEC commissioner: Slive took over in 2002 and has received high marks for helping the league clean up its image. He set the goal of having no teams on NCAA probation in five years. People were skeptical, and rightfully so. After six years only one SEC sport (Arkansas track) is still on probation. Given the competition in this league and the contact sport that is recruiting, that’s a very notable achievement.
But understand commissioners are also judged on their ability to put their conferences on sound financial footing not just now, but long after they are gone.
With Thursday’s unprecedented 15-year deal with CBS, that runs through the 2023 season, and the deals that will follow from ESPN and others, this conference proved once and for all that it is “the gold standard of college athletics” as CBS VP Mike Aresco put it.
I spoke to Slive again last night. You could hear him smiling through the phone. “We’ve got some work left to do but this is big for our conference,” he said. “But this is very important step for the Southeastern Conference. We are all very happy.”
You need to know about two other people who were heavily involved in getting this deal done. Mark Womack is Slive’s top assistant and should be the SEC commissioner when Slive retires. Chuck Gerber is a former ESPN executive who came on board this year as a consultant to help the SEC put the deal together. That’s how important it was.
Roy Kramer put the SEC on this kind of financial footing when he was commissioner from 1990-2001. Kramer was the driving force behind the BCS and the explosion of college football on TV. When Kramer took over the SEC in 1990, the league was sharing $16 million in revenue each year. Last spring the 12 SEC members shared $127 million.
Kramer brought the SEC into the modern age and now Slive has taken the baton and advanced it for another generation.
2. There will not be an SEC TV network: When I talked to Slive Thursday night he insisted that all options “are still on the table” when it comes to the possibility of the league forming its own TV network like the Big Ten.
I have no inside information but I don’t believe it will happen for one reason: The SEC doesn’t need it now.
The league obviously got the deal it wanted from CBS, giving them an exclusive national broadcast for the next 15 years. ESPN loves putting the SEC in prime time and will step up to the plate. I’m hearing ESPN would like to own the rest of the SEC’s TV rights and then be able to sell what they don’t need back to folks like Raycom, who will do the 12:30 p.m. games. To do that, ESPN would have to pay a premium. Keep your eye on that one.
The SEC has studied the distribution nightmares experienced by the Big Ten, where only 33 percent of the league’s TV sets were covered when it went to market. The SEC can’t do that.
I was joking recently when I told a Big Ten person that the distribution problems that his league had would not be tolerated in the SEC. It’s a totally different football culture.
I said: “If Illinois-Michigan is not on free TV, then your office gets a lot of nasty phone calls. If Alabama-Tennessee is not on down here, somebody’s house is going to get burned down.”
No really, I was kidding. Kind of.
Slive told me he wants to get the rest of the TV deals done in the next 20 days.
3. Forbes got it right: This week Alabama coach Nick Saban became the first college football coach to ever appear on the cover of Forbes Magazine. The headline on the cover read: “Sports’ Most Powerful Coach.” The magazine picked Saban because of his total control over every aspect of the football program at Alabama.
I agree. You can argue over who is the BEST coach in the SEC. But based on my experience there is no coach I know whose fingerprints are on every moving part of a football program the way Saban’s are at Alabama. And while that may not necessarily be a good thing at other places, at this point in Alabama’s history it is absolutely essential.
For too long there were way too many voices speaking for Alabama football. Since the death of Bear Bryant in 1983 nobody, except Gene Stallings, seemed to have complete control over the program. And as a result Alabama could not sustain the legacy left by Bryant.
There is no doubt about who is in charge at Alabama. That’s why the Crimson Tide will be good again sooner rather than later.
4. There will never be another “Hoss” Brock: Ninety-nine percent of you have never heard of Jim “Hoss” Brock, the long-time executive director of the Cotton Bowl. But I wish you had known him.
Hoss was a colorful throwback to the days when bowl deals were struck in smoke-filled rooms and a bowl executive director wasn’t a businessman, he was promoter and usually a PR genius. That was Hoss. The story of how he got Doug Flutie and Boston College for the 1985 Cotton Bowl was the stuff of legend. All of his competitors were trying to land Flutie for New Year’s Day and he found a way to get the deal done when nobody was looking. It was a crazier time and so unlike the corporate structure of the bowl business today. But it sure was fun.
Hoss Brock died yesterday at the age of 74. Those of us who have been in this business for any length of time grieve his loss and that of Dave Cawood, the long time director of the NCAA Men’s Final Four. We lost Dave in July.
The college athletics landscape that you enjoy today was built by guys like Hoss Brock and Dave Cawood. We will miss them.
5. Ben Mauk’s lawsuit does not have a chance: The former Wake Forest quarterback, who played last season at Cincinnati, is suing the NCAA to get a sixth year of eligibility. Mauk redshirted in 2003 as a freshman at Wake Forest. He played in 2004 and 2005. In 2006 he suffered a severe shoulder injury in the opening game and missed the entire season. He transferred to Cincinnati and played the 2007 season. That’s five years, which is the standard amount of time a player has to complete his four years of eligibility. The NCAA will give a sixth year if injuries force a player to miss two full seasons.
Mauk has had three hearings with the NCAA, which says there is not enough documentation to prove that Mauk missed his freshman season due to injury. Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe has written several letters to support Mauk’s case but the NCAA still says no.
The NCAA really digs in its heels on these eligibility cases. Despite an injunction against the NCAA, Cincinnati won’t use Mauk until the issue is resolved.
I personally believe Mauk deserves another year. But I don’t think he’ll get it.

Wow, Saban is on the cover of Forbes magazine with the caption “The Most Powerful Coach in Sports”. The best recruiter in the SEC now has even more leverage. Say, what magazine cover has Tommy Tuberville been on lately? Oh, right, he was on last month’s cover of “Arkansas Duck Hunting Ilustrated” with the caption “How Coach Tuberville escapes from being embarrassed on the recruiting trail”.

SEC-TV is probably never going to happen. If it did,the rights to the national free broadcast would be worth a lot less. Also, as the Big 10 (and Northwestern) found out, there are a lot of little potentates that have to be fed in the cable distribution biz.. They are the gatekeepers and the SEC needs them more than they need the SEC.

Does anyone know if we are going to have to wait until week three for an SEC CBS telecast under the new contract? CBS is usually broadcasting US Open tennis during the first two weeks of the season. That bugs me to no end.

I think we have a lot of people still upset with Nick beacuse he beat the dogs twice in one year and then went on to win the NC. The first game was close and the second one well is was an a— whipping. The man took over a program that was very bad and turned it around with 3 years.(CMR doesn’t have a NC in 7) He is the BEST recuiter there is, just as Miles. He will bring Bama back to where they were and in doing that he will beat uga a lot. He is bad because he demands respect from players that think they can do what ever they want. The problems he has on his team now was there when he took over, just wait when he gets all the kids he has recruited in you will not see any problems like uga has. Maybe if cmr would go sit with him you he may be able to give the police a break and let them fight crime instead of uga players. uga fans better get a good supply of crying towels because starting this year Bama will own them. You hit the nail on the head. Being and LSU fan and loving Nick Satan when he was at LSU he really is just an average coach. Look at what all those teams at LSU did those five years he was there. 13-1 best season he had. Other than that at least 3 losses every year. Bama doesn’t understand what they really have. After this year and going 6-6 or 7-5 at best Slick Nick will be looking for and exit from Bammer real fast.

To me an SEC Network shouldn’t be that hard to pull off. The simple answer is to convert CSS’s or SportSouth into it. Because of the Braves CSS would be easier if so then make it available to DirecTV & Dish at the same rate charged (the rate the carrier has to pay) for FSS & SS. If there going to do an entirely new network then you could run into more distribution issues.
The ESPN plan sounds great but with them having Big Ten & ACC games already how are they going to fit the SEC into there schedule & still meet there other contractually obligations? Not everyone gets ESPNU, ESPNC or ESPNNEWS with there standard packages so distribution could be an issues here as well. I still think FOX could get in the game by using there cable only channels.
Tony, please explain what the CBS deal means as far as games that will be shown by them? Is there going to be a primetime game every week in addition to the normal 3:30 game? Will they start showing games from week 1 of each season?

sgbdawg….Of the 32, 2 enrolled in January counting towards last year. 2 decided to play pro-baseball which was expected. Three did not qualify. So in total, 5 did not make it to campus. I am pretty sure that Rivals and Scout have done their re-rankings and BAMA still has the #1 class. Now we need to see what they can do on the field.
To all of you fans who call Saban average, well, he has the same number of SEC titles are the Mighty Mark Richt in about the same time. He has one more than Tuberville and Tubs has been in the league longer than Saban has been at LSU and BAMA combined. He also has a NC which neither of your coaches have. Last I was told was it was about the hardware and if 2 SEC titles and a NC is average in your opinion, I will be happy with average at BAMA if he accomplished that!

I wanted to take the opportunity to apologize to the English speaking world on behalf of the State of Alabama, the Alabama Public School System and the University of Alabama. We Alabama fans aren’t that bright — I realize that pointing that out is as news worthy and surprising as claiming that the Earth is NOT flat, the Sun rises each morning and sets each evening, you drop an apple and it falls to the ground, etc., All one needs to do is read the comments made by fellow UA posters on this board and you will see the endless supply of stupid….poor grammar, poor ability to communicate, delusions of grandeur, infatuation with the past and with the future — but failure to deal with the present reality (i.e. we used to be good and we are coming back, but let’s ignore that we suck now and get beat by the likes of LA-Monroe), etc.,
By the way, can we get an update on the progress of Jimmy Johns? Where is he on the depth chart?

If average means taking a terrible program like LSU from 8 losing seasons in 11 years to SEC CHAMPS in 2 years and 2 sec titles and an NC in 5 years than please give me average ole Saban. Also, you conveniently forget that 17 of the 22 starters on LSUs championship team last year were Saban recruits. Sorry but I just deal in facts. Fact is that he stockpiled that program for years to come before he left. He’s the best recruiter in the country. Its what he does. You dawg and Aubie fans are just ticked because you can see the return to dominance coming in very short order and there aint nothing you can do about it. Deal with it. No need to go digging up the bear. Especially when we were the 5th winningest program of the 90s when Bear had already been dead at least 10 years. I think you guys conveniently try to forget that we were a dominant force throughout the 90s, long after the bear died. The only thing that stopped us in the 2000s were probation and the coaching carousel. Newsflash! That’s over now so just deal with the inevitable rising of the Tide. Its coming. The future is ours.

ALex is a little lacking in his critical thinking skills! He obviously missed the part where Saban lost at home in his 1st year at LSU to UAB and then went on to win 2 sec titles and a nc in the next 4 years. Yet all you can do is harp on one game? The LA-Monroe game. That’s almost as bad as losing to Vandy and Kentucky IN THE SAME YEAR! God help us if we ever lose 2 games one should never lose IN THE SAME YEAR! Now that is freaking pathetic!

You never did tell me how the other 7 from last year are doing. Or how is our good buddy Odell. And if it weren’t for a lucky fumble on the 10 yard line as they were about to put the game away you would have lost 2 in a row to Vandy. We’ll learn how to beat La-Monroe when you learn to beat 2 heavyweights like Vandy and Kentucky in the same year. I think we’ve lost to Kentucky once in 36 games. It may be twice but I’m pretty sure its 36-1. How do you lose to a team like Kentucky and Vandy IN THE SAME YEAR! How does one do that?

St.Mark has turned his head so many times with all the problems he has had thats why they have had so many getting put in jail. This is nothing new for uga. I guess it wasn’t a crime or did cmr just cover it up for the kid that caused $2,000.00 of damage. Then you have a 300lb football player that has to carry a gun for protection and that gets dropped. And how many others has cmr covered up. We can sit here all day and talk about the good and the bad on each one but at the end of the day Nick makes twice what cmr does and he has a NC something cmr will never have.

All these arguments on who runs the most thugs through their program are crazy!
Who knows what a 17 year old will do once he gets to college. The coaches cannot control all 100+ players and it is dumb to lay the blame at their feet.
The question is what they do afterwards, and each case should be handled individually. this junk has gone on forever and it now gets more coverage. That is the only difference.
All of that being said, it is really disappointing that UM allows the AK shooting Punk another chance.
No program is perfect, they all have flaws, so it is stupid to continue debating who recruits thugs.

Just one more needle before starting my weekend (it’s good to be boss):
– Mike Dubose (Ha ha)
– Dennis Franchione (Har Har)
– Mike Price (Oh, stop, my sides are hurting!)
– Mike Shula over Sylvester Croom (Whoo. I can’t catch my breath!)
– Nick Saban (cue trailer queens to shout, “Oh man, we love hilm! WHOOO HOO!)
No wonder y’all are so touchy. Ha ha ha ha.

Gatorzone, You do have a point. It is useless to discuss who has the most thugs. Everybody has players who get into trouble. The ? is what does the coach do about it and does he get the program cleaned up within a certain amount of time. We could go back and forth all day on this and I actually thing our biggest rival Tubberville runs the cleanest program as far as disciplining his players goes. I will give credit where it is due. I don’t really like getting into this. But its just odd that anytime I read an AJC article on Bama inevitably I see all these warrantless, nasty posts from UGA fans about Bama and then I just have to put them in their place. Those in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks. We don’t even hate UGA. We are indifferent to them since we don’t consider them a rival. Our rivals are Auburn, Tennessee, and then LSU to a lesser degree. Almost all Bama fans actually root for UGA in the east over Florida and Tenn. So we never do understand where all the uga hate comes from.

bama_12titties Got it! Thanks for the update. Now I better understand the SEC pecking order. Bama has gotten Crommed 2 straight years, and by you account, we should respect them as the vaunted power that they are with 14 bowl trips in their history, 481-519-39 overall record and 3-9 ‘06 record and 7-6 ‘07 record….this speaks to the depths to which Bama football has sunk, we know bow down to the titans of CFB in Starkville….thank goodness The Bear is not around to witness this….sad, REALLY sad

Alex…It is LSU fans like you that make your fan base look truly pathetic when it comes to coach Saban. You can bring up bowl records and overall recerds all you want. You know what he did do. He made LSU a relevant program from the joke you guys were in the 1990’s. While we have had a bad run at BAMA the last 10 years, we also have 3 10 win season and no where near the 7 our of 10 losing seasons LSU had. Saban won you your first NC in over 40 years and also won 2 SEC titles. Something I am pretty sure you hadnt seen since the 80’s. Oh year, he also set the table for the success that LSU is having now. No I am not crediting Saban for the NC that LSU won this year but Miles should credit Saban for leaving LSU in the incredible shape that it was in. You could have hired Ed Orgeron and he could have won with the talent LSU had and still maintained their recruiting. So, slam Nick Saban all you want. If not for him, LSU would have still been the Ole Miss of the SEC west!

Alex, enjoy your weekend. While you’re laughing about Dubose, Franchione, I’ll have a good laugh over Donnan, Ray Goof, etc.
As for you Ed I don’t know where you get the Farmer’s almanac from. I just deal in facts and official sources like the OFFICIAL NCAA MEDIA GUIDE. Is there something about OFFICIAL u don’t understand? And BTW, u root for a team. Not route. Route would be a highway, road, path, etc. That pre-K education helps me correct no education at all fans like yourself. Bp superstar, I’m glad to see u recognize our glory and our tradition. For a second there I thought you were just being sarcastic but then I realized u must have actually done a little research and just jumped on the bandwagon. Sweet Homo….Yes, BAMA football has gone done significantly since the probation. We screwed up and are paying the price. However, before you go making fun of UA for losing to State, didnt you guys lose at home last year to a SC team that didnt make it to a bowl game. We lost to a team that had a winning record and a bowl win. Just kind of shows that every now and then a team that probably shouldnt win a game against a team that should be better does. Shall I bring up the year UGA lost to UK and Vandy in the same season? Does that make Richt any worse of a coach or UGA any worse of a program. Perhaps I should bring up LSU’s loss to UAB in Sabans first year and then him reeling in top recruiting classes the next 4 years and winning 2 SEC titles and a NC!

Hey Homo, I never said we were the titans of college football. I’m simply establishing the fact that before you put down someone like Miss. St. you should take note that they’ve been a helluva lot more successfull against your biggest rival UF than you have. Truth hurts don’t it. Let me help correct you again though. Miss. State was 8-5 in 07 not 7-6.I guess I should have likewise bowed down to Vandy and Kentucky both when they both took you down IN THE SAME YEAR only 2 short years ago. Those 2 are truly SEC juggernauts. Do we even need to go into their alltime records and bowl futility? I guess those teams are also truly titans going by your logic or lack therof?

Hey SoCal, Actually you would be incorrect. A lot of people actually do count split championships. Its the same reason southern cal fans will tell you they won the title in 2003 and LSU fans will tell u the same. Also, Nebraska and Michigan also both claim titles for 97 even though they split it. I could go on and on. If they split the title does that mean nobody won a national title that year as in 1997? As for winning a championship and then losing a bowl but still finishing #1 those tend to even out and we did win one title that way but we also got screwed out of a couple of others because of bias against the segregationist south in the 60s and even into the 70s. Kinda like our 1966 team. They finished undefeated, they were the 2 time defending champions, but still finished 3rd after #1 Notre Dame and #2 Mich. St started out the season #1 and #2 and played to a tie but didn’t drop in the rankings. This was Bear Bryant’s best team ever yet they got screwed because of bias. It evens out and probably evened out not in our favor. Do a little research socal. I say lets just choose an OFFICIAL source such as the NCAA OFFICIAL MEDIA GUIDE. What bean counter or source do you want to choose and why?

Hey Purple and gold, That wasn’t my post to socal at 1:57. That was some idiot that doesn’t know how to spell. Kinda like you. The word is relevant. Must be the swamp gas down there in the dump. Sorry, I meant swamp. Its the swamp gas that must have retarded your growth so that you don’t know proper grammar. Also, do we need to tally all the loser teams LSU has lost to in their history. Or do we just need to count the head to head record of 44-25 in favor of Bama. Not even close. You weren’t relevant till Saban got there and now that we are back you can now return to the swamp much where you have traditionally dwelled. And BTW, there are a few people more than bama fans who recognize 12 nat’l titles. As I’ve already noted the OFFICIAL NCAA MEDIA GUIDE credits us with 17. But again, why quibble over mere numbers when you have so many?

If purple and gold is really interested we can forget about mythical nat’l titles and just count unanimous and stick with 7 or as he incorrectly claims we can stick with the 10 the he thinks the NCAA says we have. Or if we count SEC titles we can count 21 and I think LSU has 8. It aint much and never was much until Saban got there. Head to head its 44-25. I honestly try not to be a jerk about history, tradition, all that crap. What gets me started is when someone for no apparent reason just starts ragging on Bama out of nowhere with the petty insults. Crap like go dig up the bear, blah, blah. Some fans from different schools can have intelligent posts about different teams and the season ahead. Some like purple and gold or BP superstar just start talking trash for no apparent reason. Oh well.

I have nothing against Alabama, I actually root for the team. Great history, I wish my team had as many great years.
2nd
It is listed on the NCAA website as a REFERENCE because of the popularity. That is why they list the SELECTING ORGINIZATION. If you check DII and DIII, you will notice it is just the record listed. If it was OFFICIAL it would just list the NC.
Point of reference…when techs women won the National Championship last year the story was…tech wins FIRST NCAA NC, because the NCAA did not recognize their football championships!
It is called the MNC for a reason.

Hey Ronald, We’re not completely back yet but we are on our way. If Saban’s standard is 2 secs and 1 national title in 5 years like he did at a doormat program like LSU then I will gladly take the standard. You have to also use some common sense and realize that whenever he took over a program it was always a program that was on a downcycle to begin with and that it takes a couple years to build up a program that’s down. Look how bad LSU was before he got there. They had 8 losing seasons in 11 years and they hadn’t beaten us in our house since 1969 and we played there every other year. Hell, we felt so comfortable playing in “our house” in Baton Rouge that we went 17-0-1 from 1969 until when Saban finally beat us there in 2002. We even played there 2 years in a row when the SEC split into divisions because we felt so comfortable down there. Total domination and that’s the kind of total domination that purple and gold remembers and which he knows is about to return. That’s why he fears Bama so much. People don’t readily forget as_ beatings in their own house over 32 years. That’s why purple and gold is scared out of his wits.

hey purple and gold,
I’m pretty calm over here. I did get a kick out of u telling me to take my panties out of my @crack. lmao and I’m not even being sarcastic. We’ve been down in the early 2000s due to probation but my only point is that while we haven’t been anywhere near our traditional standards we haven’t been that dang bad either. We won the west in 02 but it was the first year of probation so we couldn’t go. We posted 10 wins in 05 and 99 and maybe one other season but the point is we’ve still had at least 3 10 win seasons in the last 9 years, a couple losing seasons during the worst of the probation, and a few ho hum Independence bowl 7 win seasons. Incidentally we were co-champs in 2005 with both u guys and Auburn but out of the 3 Lsu had the tiebreaker so you guys went to the SEC title game. So its not like we haven’t been at or near the top in forever. We spent half the 05 season ranked 3rd and it wasn’t till we lost the OT game against your boys that we fell from 3rd in the country. I’m not even worried about getting LSU. Auburn and Tenn. are our 2 biggest rivals.

To the question about the CBS contract. The games will continue to start on the third Saturday of the season because of the CBS commitment to U.S. Open tennis.
There will be one prime time game per season on CBS. The rest of the games will start at 3:30 p.m., Eastern time.
The biggest change is that CBS will get the No. 1 pick of games every week. In the past ESPN got to pick first three times per season. That is how ESPN got the Florida-Auburn game last season.

Hey Tony, wanna know why the SEC is so popular? Because following CFB is a good excuse to not work. Southerners are the most unproductive people on earth and CFB is a good excuse to goof off and chat about it. I had to fire a guy last year because he was spending so much time texting his friends about recruiting. Real men don’t waste productive time on such childish foolishness. You’re right, in Big Ten country, people would get upset, but more important things (like doing your job right) take the forefront.
