How huge is UGA’s loss of Sturdivant?

This is hard to believe, but two weeks from tonight we will play the first games of the 2008 season. And because the injury bug has bitten frequently in the last seven days, there are some things that need to get resolved in a hurry.

Here are just a few of the burning questions that need to get answered in the next 14 days.

1. How huge will the loss of Trinton Sturdivant be for Georgia? I think it’s really huge but managing these kind of things is what coaches are paid to do and why recruiting for depth is so important. If this injury happens on an SEC team with serious depth issues, it could be devastating. But, as Chip Towers pointed out, over the past few seasons Georgia has made recruiting offensive linemen a priority. This is where that decision should pay off.

Georgia will put another really good player into that left tackle spot. But I also know this: There is a reason that Sturdivant has been holding down the left tackle spot pretty much since the day he walked onto campus. He was the best lineman Georgia had. The Bulldogs will still be good at that position. But they can’t be AS good. On such subtle distinctions championships are sometimes won or lost in the SEC. Only time will tell.

And here is the other question. Do you move right tackle Kiante Tripp, over to the left side? Some coaches say no because now you’re putting new players at TWO different positions, creating more disruption on the offensive line. Other coaches say you have to put the best player possible at left tackle because he protects the blind side of your quarterback.

And keep this in mind if you’re a Georgia fan. Under new defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson, South Carolina is working on different ways to take advantage of the skills of its best pass rusher, Eric Norwood. Norwood has moved to outside linebacker but Johnson told me that Norwood would continue to put pressure on quarterbacks because he does it so well. Georgia will see a lot of Norwood when the Bulldogs go to Columbia on Sept. 13.

2. Will Mitch Mustain be the guy at Southern Cal? USC quarterback Mark Sanchez dislocated his left kneecap in practice last Friday. Sanchez said he hopes to be back for the opener at Virginia on Aug. 30.

This opens the door for Mustain, who won eight games as a true freshman at Arkansas in 2006 but transferred after a serious falling out with Houston Nutt and the Razorback coaching staff.

A lot of people have questioned whether or not all the drama surrounding Mustain’s transfer was really necessary. I know because I was one of them. But there were a lot of people in Arkansas who are convinced that Nutt completely mishandled the entire Mitch Mustain situation and forced a great player to go elsewhere. The fallout on all sides was considerable and the hurt feelings are still significant.

It would be sweet redemption for Mustain if he were able to take over the USC offense and have some success. And it sure would make a lot of Arkansas fans ever madder to see Mustain playing pitch and catch in a Southern Cal uniform on national television against Ohio State on Sept. 13. This will be fun to watch.

3. Will Tennessee have a cakewalk at UCLA? Last spring Patrick Cowan, projected to be UCLA’s starting quarterback, injured his knee and was lost for the season. On Tuesday Ben Olson, his backup, had surgery to repair a broken right foot. Now the Bruins and Rick Neuheisel are down to junior college transfer Kevin Craft and redshirt freshman Chris Forcier.

One of those guys is going to have to take the first snap against Tennessee on Sept. 1 at the Rose Bowl.

Any time a team has to fly out to the West Coast to play it is not easy. But this injury increases the possibility that Tennessee won’t have to fight tooth and nail to get out of Pasadena with a win. Understand that the first three weeks (UCLA, off week on Sept. 6, UAB on Sept. 13) for Tennessee are about getting ready to host Florida on Sept. 20 and then go tot Auburn on Sept. 27.

The injuries at UCLA could make that process a little easier. Or not.

4. Who is going to be Auburn’s starting quarterback?: OC Tony Franklin told me that at some point he would name a starting quarterback-either sophomore Kodi Burns or JUCO transfer Chris Todd. That decision is coming soon.

Burns got more work in the new offense during spring practice because Todd had a dead arm. But Todd knows the offense inside and out because he’s been running some version of it for most of his football life.

My money is on Burns, who has made great strides as a passer since the end of last spring.

“At first I wasn’t sure if Kodi could throw the ball well enough to run our offense but then I saw his high school tape. He was a very good passer but something happened after he got here,” Franklin said. “It wasn’t anybody’s fault. But these things just happen.”

Burns also has the ability to plant his foot and make defenders miss, which is very important in this offense. Todd will play a lot because he’s very talented. The fact is that if you run the spread offense, you have to have two quarterbacks ready to go at all times.

5. Will Josh Jarboe make the most of his third (and probably final) chance at Troy?

I think so. Jarboe was released at Oklahoma when it was discovered that he had made a short video with references to gun violence. This was after he had been kicked out of high school for bringing a gun onto school property.

Now he lands at Troy, which could be the best possible move for him. Troy has a very competitive program on the rise, but it is not in the white-hot spotlight of a place like Oklahoma or the SEC. He’ll get a chance to develop as a player and a person.

Ryan Perrilloux got a second chance at Jacksonville State and Jarboe deserves this third chance at Troy.

But at the risk of sounding like a dad, here is a piece of advice to the young man: If football is really important to you then you’ll simplify your life. Concentrate on football and going to school. That’s it. This is your last chance.

  1. The loss of TS is BIG for UGA. He was a starter as a true freshman at left tackle in the SEC which means no one on the UGA team was good enough to beat him out. He protects the QB’s blind side. Hate to see a kid with that kind of talent get injured.

  2. Mustain had all the hype in the world but proved what type of kid he was when at Arkansas. Once Sanchez heals up, it will be his job again.

  3. UT should win that game but it wont be a cake walk.

  4. The starter for AU will be Burns but they will rotate a lot. Burns will be more of the running QB because I still dont believe Tubs has a lot of faith in his throwing abilities, especially when he wants to go verticle. Todd will be the passing QB which will make their offense a little easier to figure out.

  5. To steal and modify a line from the movie Bull Durham, I have an idea about his million dollar ability but I am not so sure of that 5 cent head. Kid has major talent but because of dumb decisions he is forced to play at troy. Maybe being at a smaller school in a smaller town and out of the limelight, he will be able to keep out of trouble.

Enough about all this football stuff.

What are we going to do if the Russians get all the way to Atlanta?

At that time all of you will appreciate Jarboe and his homies.

I guarantee you the Ruskies won’t go through Clayton county.

  1. UGA may have to change there offense early on to help the LT out which may mean a more conservative game plan. Good ole ball control, play action passing, great D all of which I think there capable of so the BIG question becomes can Walsh deliver in the clutch. As the season goes on the OL should solidify much like last year then the O will begin to open up. Early on we may be frustrated with sports car being driven like an economy car but by the end of the year it should be in high gear.

  2. Mitch Mustain & Aaron Crop accordign to the reports coming out of USC both have struggled since Sanchez went down. So Mustian might not even win the job! What will he do then? I don’t think he can transfer again unless he goes down a level. Mustian comes off as a kid who thinks he should be handed the starting job. If he wanted to play then going to USC doesn’t make a lot of sense. He was upset when Sanchez won the job in the spring, what did he think was going to happen? USC brings in a AA HS QB every year so its not that easy to walk in & just be handed the job. Plus any smart coach will make a kid earn the job. (Much like CMR did with Stafford & is now doing with Caleb King.) I bet he’s like to be home in Arkansas where he’d be the starter in a pro style O. That whole thing was a mess, I think they thought they’d fire Nut & bring in Malzon to run the passing spread O instead he goes to Tulsa to be there OC then Mustain goes west. Bottom line is if Mustian thinks he’s all that then now’s the time to show it in practice then in games IF Sanchez isn’t healthy.

  3. Tennessee might be over confident which will help UCLA pull the upset. Speakign of going out west I’m REALLY worried about the Dawgs trip to ASU.

  4. Interesting I think Burns is the choice if Franklin is willing to modify is O to use a little more spread option mixed in with his passing game. Personally I hope they do go with a platoon so that it’s easier to game plan against them.

  5. Tony I agree. Jarboe will be better off out of the spotlight at Troy. Hopefully he can focus on school & football then have a good college career. Football wise as a WR Troy is a good fit for him so he should be showcased. Tony, what are your thoughts will the NCAA make him sit out a year or will he be eligible immediately? It might be good for him to sit a year regardless so if he is allowed to play they still should strongly consider redshirting him.

Losing TS puts a definite ? at LG/LT positions. But as Chip/Tony have discussed, we have depth at those positions. May not be as strong as last year..but we’ll be good. First couple of games will let us know a little better. USC? I thought they were perfect. Mustain wont be so hot after not playing for awhile. UT over UCLA. Definetly a “re-building year at Auburn till the QB gets some experience. Jarboe..only time will tell. GO DAWGS

If you think about, UGA now has to field new starters at the 3 most important O-line positions: Both tackles and center. Ouch. Stacy Searels has got his work cut out for him.

The loss of TS is unfortunate but not that big a deal unless we have a couple more go down on the line. TS was clearly the best but the others are very good too. Thus, is there a drop off? yes but not much! Everyday you see teams losing players to injury so it is just part of the game.

First off, this guy is overrated. But more importantly, what the heck is Richt doing exposing unnecessarily to injury? Note to Richt: This is our year! The table has been set like never before in our history. Forget the crying jag over the schedule. Tech is in the bag every year, we ran over Florida last year and everybody is back, Vandy and Kentucky are worse than ever and no threat of an upset. ASU is the most overrated team in America and Alabama was lucky to win what they did and got beat by Lousiana something or other. But here we are ranked number 1 and Richt can’t seem to keep guys focused and in at night. If he blows it this year, I say Adams ought to call him in. No excuse.

We sign 30 or something 4 and 5 stars for 20 years running and everybody has a funeral when we lose one offensive tackle.

I think people are making excuses for Richt. Im not. We pay him big money to bring home some hardware, we should have 4 0r 5 tackles waiting as deep as we are.

Its funny how over the last few years, we have managed to put an offensive line togeather with duct tape and bailing wire. We still managed to win. No one complained. Now we lose an offensive lineman and everyone goes crazy. Relax. We’ll figure it out.

Here’s a little tip….If we don’t win the SEC, if we don’t win the national championship…the sun will continue to rise and set.

In addition to finding a new LT, UGA still has to find a kicker. These things are they type of issues that tend to derail a NC. Myabe St. Mark can keep his team focused enough to overcome this, but I really doubt it!

By Tony Barnhart

August 14, 2008 9:17 AM | Link to this

Because Jarboe is not transferring in the normal sense, Troy may be able to get a waiver from the NCAA that would allow Jarboe to be immediately eligible to play.

But the NCAA is always wary of setting a precedent that can be abused. Ryan Mallett wanted a waiver to play immediately at Arkansas because Rich Rodriguez brought in a new offensive system at Michigan. No dice.

Just not sure that the NCAA wants to open this can of worms. I would let the kid play, which means the NCAA probably won’t.

Ha, ha, ha ya’ll are funny. I don’t remember the OL being that good, anyway. Wasn’t the QB hurrying passes and throwing from his back leg? The way I see it, losing a starter who is just an average player is losing an avergage player. But I feel for the young man and hope he can comeback….if he wants to.

The loss of Sturdivant is big, but its time to move on. There are 87 other scholarship players out there and we still have a little talent left. Now what else is happening? I want to hear about the battle for #2 RB and how is Logan Gray doing and will he be groomed to take over for Stafford or will Cox be the relief QB this year?

By Bradley G

August 14, 2008 9:25 AM | Link to this

Troy’s spread offense doesn’t necessarily utilize a go-to receiver. Is that lack of limelight in the offense much less the size community going to be too much (or little?) for Jarboe to handle? Jarboe does get a third chance at a place where an excellent coach got a second chance, Larry Blakeney.

My understanding is after a morning in the pool CMR got word of a Bigfoot family living in the North Ga mountians. He quickly got into the schools 4 X 4 and took of to them hills looking for any critter to play LT. If he finds one that can get a 650 on a quick SAT they will be fine !

The loss of Sturdivant is tough but I believe it will turn out to be a rallying cry and a reminder to stay humble.

There is good depth at OL and it is not like injuries don’t happen all the time.

USC is seriously overrated but will still edge out UVA. UT will win at UCLA. Auburn is a year away regardless of who the qb is.

I could care less about spurrier or any of his coaches. After UGA waxes them for the 3rd time in 4 years, he will once again refuse to acknowledge that UGA is a power school despite the fact that we all know they are.

Black athletes are not improving in important areas. They are allowed to live lifes that no one else is allowed to live. They are allowed to do and say things that no one else can say. Most offensively anyone who criticizes a black person is considered a Racist automatically.

Last year, after the Army-Navy game they spoke to the “Captain”. He could barely speak English. He as black btw. How do you get into Annapolis and sound like you are still in the ghetto and have never taken an English class?

Is the only requirement for black athletes that they fog up a mirror? Sure seems that way. Affirmative action at work. When you can get into an elite school and sound like a rapper, we have some serious problems. It’s time to make all people live by the same laws and rules.

Live a thug life, die a thug death. Pretty simple.

Tennessee will crush UCLA. The Bruins are down to their third-team QB. The loss of Sturdivant is big, but we should be able to plug one hole. Let’s just hope that we don’t lose any more offensive linemen. It’s hard to coach character, so who knows how long he’ll last at Troy.

Kent N. you know you were not supposed to tell anyone that Coach Richt was at the house last night. Also, you don’t have to broadcast to the city of Atlanta that you are still trying to break 600 on the SAT. Having said that, we are all rooting for you and just know that you will indeed break that magical 650 that you mentioned — you can do it Kent!! Joe M, as a Dawg fan I agree with you folks should quit crying about the schedule. It is what it is. If it were less, people would say we play a cakewalk similar to Ohio St (Give the Buckeyes credit for usually one big annual non-conf game, though).

It appears we do have depth at the O-line, and while TS will be sorely missed, I think Searels will have his boys ready as long as we’re not hammered with more injuries (I actually feel bad for Florida right now, go figure).

I think the rest of your blog underestimates what CMR has already accomplished and the annual strength of the SEC. The man HAS brought hardware home, you knucklehead. SEC championships. Something we were sorely lacking for 20 YEARS BEFORE. If you are the garden variety fan that thinks that every year without the crystal trophy is a failure, then be gone with you. Go watch tapes of the Donnan-Goff years if you think CMR’s middle rank SEC salary is too high. Then go ask Tubs why his AU team sucked so bad in 2004 at 13-0 they couldn’t bring it home. The NC is great and I want just as badly as any fan, but I know it tends to be a beauty pageant. The SEC title must be earned from a bloodbath, and I respect each winner as much or more than I do the Nat’l Champ.

There. I feel better now. Go you hairy Dawgs.

From what I’ve been reading there’s a rash of injuries going on across the country. Maybe it’s that way every year and we’re just paying attention to it this time because the Braves aren’t giving us any reason not to. Hopefully, the depth will make enough of a difference and things will work out as we want them…namely to be better than those other guys every week.

Tony,

I think you are really misreading the situation at Arkansas in regard to Mitch Mustain. Most of the fans I know see him as an Arkansas kid that got a bum deal and wish him well. I don't think there will be a lot of us who are going to be upset at him if we see him playing pitch and catch on September the 13th. We are p** at Nutt and company for their handling of the whole situation. And Mitch didn't transfer to a division rival either. A whole lot of planets would have to come into alignment for Arkansas and USC to ever play one another again. We'll play Ole Miss every year! While he is at USC, I believe most of us are going to wish him well and probably regret that we lost him.

Good info Tony

I’ve read a lot of blogs from over confident UGA fans the last two weeks. My thoughts were wait until the injury bug bites, especially with the tuff schedule looming. Best chill out on the trash talking just yet dawgs, your setting yourself up for heartbreak. Having never had the number one ranking going in and the biggest target on your back that your team has ever had. I know your team is real good, but have you really looked at the schedule and thought about it? I think you lose to UF and Auburn for sure this year and I even feel an upset coming from the Tide.

Happy for Troy and hope the kid does great there with no more problems. Hope that offense stays as procuctive without Franklin there too.

Mustain has been way over rated. He obviously is not the man USC thought he could be. Wish he would have stayed at Arkansas because of that.

I’m out.

Tony,

It doesn't look like all my comment is appearing, so let me try to state it again. I want to say that I think you are misreading the Arkansas fans' frame of mind when it comes to Mitch Mustain if you think we would be mad at him. Most of us think he got a bum deal while at Arkansas; and as you point out, we are mad at how Nutt handled the situation. Most of us aren't too impressed with Mitch's mother either. There were adults on both sides that didn't act like adults. So it seems. Most of us would be glad to see Mitch pitch the ball around at USC on September the 13th, for he didn't transfer to a division rival like somebodyelse just recently did. It would take a lot of planet alignments to come into being for Arkansas to ever play USC again. We play Ole Miss every year! That is the direction you need to look towards when it comes to what makes the majority of Arkansas fans mad. Seeing Mitch Mustain, an Arkansas kid, doing well on the big national stage would make a whole lot of Arkansas fans feel good.

What about Massoquai, Henderson, and Southerland? Ever heard of them? Here’s a hint: They all scored easy touchdowns on your absolute joke of a defense too. Massoquoi and Southerland weren’t even touched. 5’9” Henderson schooled one of your blue chip 5 star all-universe recruits in one on one coverage. Yeah, everybody bow down to the mighty Gators. A real powerhouse you got there.

I have a question for Gator fans. Which tight end is going to catch Tebow’s rinky dink short yardage underneath passes that inflate his completion percentage? Got an answer? Is Meyer going to hold open tryouts for safety?

You guys might want to deal with your own injury issues instead of worrying about Georgia’s. Good to know we are on your minds though. I guess the end zone dance is still having its intended effect.

It’s nice to finally read something that hasn’t been falsely stated about the Mustain Arkansas situation. Since I am very close to the Program here at Arkansas, I can tell you first hand that Mitch and his mother were lied about and slandered from the previous administration. There is a reason the University has a new CHANCELLOR, ATHLETIC DIRECTOR, and COACHING STAFF.

If the Arkansas Supreme Court reverses a ruling this September, there will be a lot of people apologizing (national media included) for things they claimed Mustain and his mother did.

In my 30 years of being associated with this program, I had never been ashamed of it like I was when Mitch and his mother were vilified by the national media when those who knew the truth stayed silent.

And for SecIsFootball, Mustain did show what he was about at Arkansas. He was 8-0 as a TRUE FRESHMAN in the SEC.

1) I think everyone has pretty much covered the Sturdivant situation quite well. We will miss him but we’re deep. We’ll be fine. 2) Mustaine is a premadonna that will get exactly what he deserves. A warm bench and zero shot at the NFL. Nice decision making their, Mitch! 3) UT should have little trouble with a UCLA program that’s having that many injuries at QB. UCLA really hasn’t been good in a while anyway. 4) AU will be fine no matter who they put in at QB. Wish them well until they play UGA. Hopefully twice! 5) Jarboe will probably follow in the same footsteps as Marcus Vick and continue to think he’s above it. Hopefully I’m wrong and he gets it right, but history has a tendency to repeat itself. Seen it too many times. Sorry.

We lost Ginger 2 years later to a heart attack. I don’t want to be too emotional, just wanted to thank you not only because my daughter gave it to me, but because of the book itself. This book has taught me so much more about our great southern game than anything I’ve ever read. Again, great work and thanks.

I think losing Sturdivant will hurt to a degree. I think it may hurt the Dawgs in the passing game since you have to be athletic enough in pass protection to move your feet and hands. But in terms of running the ball, I think they could get by with a replacement on the left side. And the nice thing about playing on the O-line for UGA is that Moreno has the ability to make people miss even when a defender breaks through the line. So it will suck not having Trinton out there, but at the same time injuries happen, especially in the SEC. It may mean that the Dawgs will have rely on the running game and short passing game more, but that should be okay.

Maybe the dawgs can sign the tribe of sasquatches that were discovered to be living in north Georgia.

I think a 7 foot 7 inch, 500lb man/monkey would make a decent replacement at left tackle.

Give Georgia some credit when it comes to choosing players. I can remember a certain OL that had committed to Ga. but decided to visit Fl. On that visit he went into a female dorm and fondled a resident in the middle of the night. Georgia no longer wanted him and Florida would not take him either (class). This OL ended up with Tennessee and played 4 years as a starter. No sasquatches at Georgia.

Yea CBS should be showing at least two SEC games a week then three on weeks they do primetime games. It amazes me how the SEC is the best football conference going but can’t get our games on TV. The ACC & Big 10 has made deals in the last few years & there all over TV. If they do a SEC network it needs to be available to all SEC households’ form the get go. We have DirecTV so we don’t get CSS but do get the BTN with the sports pack but if you have cable you probably can’t get it. Same applies with CBS college sports…it would be great for me if CBS started showing a replay of every SEC came each week on it but that wouldn’t be available to most people with cable. That won’t cut it if there’s an SEC network. I was hopping FOX would get in the game & get the contract then show SEC games on there network. ESPN’s College Game Plan is OK but what about an SEC Ticket with every SEC game shown each week with NO blackouts. The Game Plan is $110 I’d gladly pay that for an SEC only package but it shouldn’t have to come to that! There’s no excuse for every SEC game not being shown on TV each week, most should be Live but a few could be on tape delay. Also the production of the games should be top notch not like the rinky dink access level CSS crap! That I can’t even get but you know what it’s better than nothing I guess now it only needs to be available to ALL SEC FANS!

The loss of Sturdivant is a big blow to the Georgia line due to his experience, but my resources tell me that the position can be filled. The depth of talent on the offensive line is huge in that the dawgs will be able to rotate a minimum of eight players at multiple positions. This is why Searels cross trains so many players. The loss will be evident at the beginning of the season, but the line should come together three games into the season. Also, don’t forget that Josh Davis was a solid recruit 3 yrs ago, and Clint Boling could and probably will end up starting at LT.

Sturdivant was very talented, but make no mistake: Clint Boling is equally talented and could play center or tackle as well as guard if he needed to. Stacy Searels cross trains guys and always has, so plugging Boling into Sturdivant’s slot won’t be a problem if that’s what they choose to do. Or they could utilize very talented Cordy Glenn at the LT. Ben Jones may be the best center even though Davis has 13 games of experience. Searels will coach them up no matter who is out there, so I’m not worried.

TB, why don’t you do all UGA fans a favor and blog about another team. We are tired of you questioning everything about UGA. We get it, you luv Meyer, Phat Phil, and the ole ball coach, and you have absolutely no respect for Richt and the job he has done at UGA. YOu are jealous just like all the SEC rival’s fans of the success UGA has had under Richt. You fail to ever mention that UGA has won more games than any SEC school over the past seven years, and that includes your favorite school FL, and your other favorites Tenn, and S.C. Do eveyone a favor and hurry up and leave with your buyout from the AJC. One last thing Mr. College Football, right, you might want to do something you don’tknow how to do, and that is to do a little research before you runoff at the mouth again. UGA had no O.L. last year, and won 11 games. THey also won the SEC with a rebuilt O.L. in 2005. You also don’t mention or question Fl, and your lover(Suckface Meyer), even though they lost a preseason 1st team tightend, and their starting safety. One last thing, last time I checked Sturdivant wasn’t on any preseason all SEC teams, so get a life, and go get a woody watching S.C. defense practice. Sounds like your new fantasy is to get close and personal with S.C.’s new D.C., fatboy Ellis. Who cares where Norwood lines up. One suggestion. you had better line a 270 lb linebacker close to the line, if you expect him to make any plays. Can’t wait to see him try to run down Moreno, or King in open space. Please go write on the S.C., Fl., or Tenn. blogs, and get off of the AJC’s

I think all these Georgia fans slamming TB is ridiculous, get over the fact that every one is not going to bow down and crown you number 1. Tony is just reporting the facts, you just lost your starting left tackle. Any team that thinks they are going to win it all needs a good line. All he is saying is that it is going to make it harder, not that you can’t win it all. I agree that Florida is going to be hurt by losing Ingram, but who cares about how the media reports injuries. Beat Florida when you play them, or if you are so good how about you beat Tennessee before you talk smack about how are program is irrelevant. I agree that Tennessee is not as good as it was 10 years ago but don’t call us irrelevant, last time I looked we have hammered you the last 2 years, and if you wanna throw out 5 out of 8 then I will throw out 12 out of 17. I agree you have a good team but I think Ut, UF, LSU, Auburn, and Alabama will have something to prove when they play you guys.

Mr. Phil… Injuries lead SC to be mediocre their last 5 games. They almost beat tenn and clempson, anyway! I see some factors. 1) They have good, deep DB’s. 2) Norwood, Brinkley and D. Gamecock Henry, do you honestly think that the Gamecocks have a chance against UGA?! Even if we were not ranked #1, we would still easily win the contest. UGA has matured since last year’s rather embarrassing loss to the mediocre Cocks and this team is not the same one your beloved team faced last season. Yes, most of the faces are the same but this team has connected to form one of the most feared lineups in all of college football. I am no psychic, so I cannot say that we will maintain our #1 ranking or if we will or will not suffer a loss this season. However, if we do suffer a loss this season, it certainly would not be to a dismal SC team.

SecIsFootball

The loss of TS is BIG for UGA. He was a starter as a true freshman at left tackle in the SEC which means no one on the UGA team was good enough to beat him out. He protects the QB’s blind side. Hate to see a kid with that kind of talent get injured.

While the loss of any starter on the OL is big, I would like to remind people of a few facts that they may have forgotten or be unaware of. Trinton Sturdivant got the starter’s job because Josh Davis and Vince Vance got knee injuries last year in spring drills and then either didn’t recover as quickly as expected, got another injury in the case of Davis when he hurt his shoulder and/or got in Coach Searel’s Dog house Vance. Granted TS worked very hard and proved to be a very goog OL last year and had gotten bigger and stronger for this year. Still we are going to be fine on the OL as both Jones and Glenn have proven they are ready to play and contribute. Boling will be back for the Central Michigan game and our O-line will have 2 games under their belts’ before we go to Columbia, SC.

Go Dawgs “EARN IT”

By Phil

August 14, 2008 9:31 PM | Link to this

Yeah, ok Gamecock Henry, I will be certain to do that. I am really sure that I will need it. From the looks of last season, losing to the Cocks made us a better team down the stretch. Crazy huh? I am not too concerned about a team that is not even ranked in the top 25. If they are as great as you are implying, I think that the experts would have already picked up on that and ranked them accordingly. The SEC has some very strong teams this season but SC is just not one of them. According to the ESPN coaches poll, UGA received 1438 first place votes, SC received 64. Yeah, fierce competition.

They have a much better QB , better RBs and WRs and they can score some points in an awesome fashion. With Clemsons program progessing here lately ,they have been a thorn in both UGa and Gamecocks. Phil, since you appear to be an expert on rankings, please enlighten us all on the Gamecocks ranking prior to the Georgia game last year…I guess by your logic you wish the Gamecocks WERE ranked so Georgia would have an easier time beating them?!?!?! Makes sense…If you’re a leg humper, I guess…

And allow me to answer your question to Gamecock Henry about whether he/we REALLY believe the Gamecocks will beat the Goats next month….

NO! They don’t have a chance!

Heck, it’s not like your All-World starting quarterback is 0-1 as a starter against us or has a 44% completion rate or 4 INTs and no TDs…Or Richt’s offenses have failed to score an offensive TD in 3 of 7 games against us…Or the last time Georgia came into Williams-Brice with a Heisman candidate he left with a 5 INTs…

Nope, a South Carolina win could NEVER happen!

Almost forgot there was an actual topic to this thread…

Hey Barnhardt, if I was Trinton Sturdivant’s replacement (or Mattie Stafford, for that matter), I’d be a lot more worried about Cliff Matthews or Clifton Geathers than I would Eric Norwood…

GatorZone: It’s pretty good when the only chink in the Dawgs’ armor you can see is at kicker and possibly at OL with Sturdivant’s injury. Kicker? Legit. True freshmen can rarely be counted on 100%. But Georgia has a few lined up. One of them will get the job done—probably Blair Walsh. And is Sturdivant’s loss huge? Of course. But not as much as Cornelius Ingram’s was to the Gators, where he was the best TE in the SEC and a HUGE matchup problem for pass defenders in Meyer’s offense. There’s not another player like him on the Florida roster. And the Gators are another ACL or two away from disaster at safety, where you’re depending on Will Hill, another true freshman. Would you rather depend on a true freshman at FS or kicker? I think you’re more vulnerable at FS; there are plenty of true freshmen who have excelled at kicker at Georgia (i.e Kevin Butler, Rex Robinson, Brandon Coutu, Billy Bennett).

And IM4Bama: Who says the Gators are going to grow a defense this season? Sorry, but I don’t see a loss to the Gators unless they can defend. Georgia may have lost an offensive lineman, but Florida never had a defense. And a loss to Bama? In Athens? Get real. You guys will be worse on defense than you were last season. Don’t see that happening AT ALL. The Auburn game does worry me. They should have their offense humming along by then, and Brandon Cox ( a huge liability against Georgia for them the past two years) has moved on. Plus, they have a great D. I’m also concerned about LSU, who has the best linemen in the league. In the SEC and in the rest of the football universe, defense wins championships. Hence my concern about LSU and Auburn and my lack of concern about Florida and Alabama.

Finally, Gamecock Henry: really, a Gamecock fan lecturing ANYONE about being delusional is some sort of a sick joke. Isn’t “Delusional Thinking” a course all South Carolina students must pass to graduate? Here’s a dose of reality for ya: Georgia played like crap against an injury-free South Carolina defense last season and outgained them, losing a close game because of poor execution and a couple of key penalties. That Georgia team was far less experienced on the OL than the current one is, even with Sturdivant gone. The same team matured greatly as the season progressed, gaining yards and scoring points against far more solid defensive teams (Auburn, Tech). Georgia will be better on offense this season. South Carolina, with a host of unproven QBs and no running game, will be worse on offense. Georgia will be better on defense this season; South Carolina will be solid on D, but no better than the full-strength team the Dawgs faced last season. And one thing’s for certain—the Dawgs won’t be flat this year like they were in 2007. So I wouldn’t go around calling the Bulldogs “overrated” like your coach did last season. He made that snide remark and his team promptly was hammered by Vandy (which, incidentally, I was surprised that you had the audacity to mention, given that our loss to them was two years ago and yours was last year, in the midst of a humiliating five-game slide that left you out of bowl contention).

Can’t wait to line it up on September 13. It will be nice to shut you up for another decade or so.

The “countdown to kick-off” clock is incorrect….unless the kickoff on Saturday Aug 30 is at 5:30am.
