Georgia game looms large for the Gators

Gainesville, Fla.-When last we saw the Florida Gators play, head coach Urban Meyer was not a happy camper. His defense had been just been torched by Michigan which resulted in a 41-35 loss in the Capital One Bowl and a final record of 9-4.

With Tim Tebow, the Heisman Trophy winner, coming back for his junior season there was a sense of urgency in the coaches’ offices when I visited on Wednesday. Georgia is ranked preseason No. 1 in the USA Today coaches poll and by Sports Illustrated. The Associated Press poll comes out later this month. But Florida, not Georgia, was the overwhelming choice by the media to win the SEC in 2008.

And while nobody in charge will talk about it, that Nov. 1 date with Georgia in Jacksonville looms pretty large in this building. It is a long-term goal in a program that, under Meyer, is always focused on the short-term goal of using the next practice or the next game to get better.

“We are thinking about the first game with Hawaii,” said Cameron Newton of College Park, who is competing to be Tebow’s backup. “But yeah, the game with Georgia is going to be big after what happened last year (a 42-30 loss). I know our coaches really want it.”

But first Florida has to get to Jacksonville in position to win a championship. Given what will be the SEC’s, and maybe the nation’s, best offense, I think they will.

That’s still a long way off. For now, here are five things that you need to know about the Gators as preseason practice gets into full swing:

1. For Tebow, it’s about the championships: In my meeting with offensive coordinator Dan Mullen, I asked him what Tebow, the first sophomore to win the Heisman Trophy, does for an encore in 2007.

Mullen pointed to two photos in his office. One was a large copy of a Sports Illustrated cover that shows former quarterback Chris Leak holding up the crystal ball after winning the 2006 national championship. The other is a smaller photo, tucked into the corner of the office, of Tebow at the Heisman Trophy ceremonies last December.

“Tim knows that quarterbacks at Florida are ultimately defined by that,” said Mullen, pointing to the photo of Leak, “and not that,” as he pointed to the other photo.

“It’s really about winning the SEC championship because that is what you can control on the field. Quarterbacks are always remembered for championships. Tim knows that.”

2. Harvin still not 100 percent: Percy Harvin, the splendid wide receiver, is not yet completely recovered from April surgery to correct a long-term problem with his heel. His participation in preseason practice will probably be limited but no one here seems concerned. Harvin knows what to do.

“Right now he’s limited because he’s still taking time in recovery but Percy knows he has to get himself ready for games,” Mullen said. “He knows what he is doing in this offense now. He’s played enough.”

When Harvin is healthy and at full speed he is the most dynamic player in this league. He spent all of last season with heel and hip problems. Don’t expect Percy to be pushed too much in practice this season. He is too valuable.

3. Taking care of Tebow: Tebow carried the ball 210 times last season. Kestahn Moore was second on the team with only 104 carries. Mullen concedes that that just simply can’t happen again in 2008. Tebow had a couple of significant injuries that slowed him down at the end of last season. Even if Tebow doesn’t get hurt, the wear and tear of the pounding by SEC defenses has to take its toll.

“Yes, we have to get the ball out of his hands,” Mullen said. “The good news is we’ve gotten to the point were we have guys like Cameron Newton who can come in a take some of that (offensive) package because he’s ready. We also have more guys we can put at the tailback position (like Chris Rainey and Emmanuel Moody), who can take some of those runs away.”

This may be too much X’s and O’s talk for Aug. 7, but here’s the thing that makes it so tempting to run the ball with Tebow. When Tebow is in the shotgun and the Gators have three wide receivers, the defensive is spread to the point where Florida actually has a numerical mismatch. Tebow is such a good runner that the play almost always does well.

But even on good plays Tebow will get his shots. Auburn’s game plan last year when they beat Florida in Gainesville was to get after Tebow on every single play. You can bet that the rest of the league will follow suit. This year they have to protect the Franchise.

4. Florida’s new complex is impressive: Since my last visit the school has invested $28 million to build the new football complex on the southwest corner of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. It is a new and impressive “front door” to the entire football operation, where the school can entertain recruits and their families and provide a place for fans to congregate on game day.

The coaches’ offices have been completely renovated with state of the art flat screen TVs and new meeting rooms.

In short, Meyer wanted something tangible and impressive to be able to sell Florida’s history of success and tradition to recruits. It is no accident that when a recruit and his family walk up the stairs to the main football office, there is a flat screen television in the lobby playing continuous footage of “Gators in the NFL.”

“We have this incredible tradition at Florida and it is our job to put this on display for everyone to see,” Meyer said. “We are proud of it. We think we have a lot of sell here. This helps us do that.”

5. Concerned about C.I. Tight end Cornelius Ingram injured his knee in practice on Tuesday. Results of an MRI are expected to be released as early as this morning. If “C.I.” is out for the season or even part of season that would be a big blow for the Gators.

With all of the moving parts in Florida’s offense, having a quality tight end gives the Gators an incredible advantage. Ingram came back for his senior season because it was clear that Florida had really been plans for him. He caught 34 passes for 508 yards last season.

On a more serious note:

I hope the news comes back good for the TE.

I don’t know if there is anything more heartbreaking in football than a kid working his butt off all off season only to be injured at the start of the practice season.

AU lost a very good one this week in Aairon Savage. Perhaps AU’s best DB in their weakest defensive group to a serious knee injury.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

Not only is their someone out there claiming to be me but now they have even started to imitate my style.

That second comment up there is not mine. UGA/UF should be one of the best games of the season.

UGA is not so much overrated as that their schedule is a killer.

I tell you what though I’m flattered that someone would be so jealous of my style and wit** that they would try to be me by proxy.

My question for you FAKE Roswell Ed is it hard to type with one hand while rubbing yourself with the other as you dream about being me?

its funny how the mighty gator program with its storied tradition and long unquestioned history of winning coaches is letting a little doormat like georgia get them all upset.

could it be that the people in gainesville know that order is being restored to the universe…and that they are a little bit frightened because they all know down deep inside which team has really owned the other over the course of history…..those 10 years of dominance and one school still has a 20 game lead in the all time series….

of course not. what am i thinking? i am just another disallusioned georgia fan, living in the past.

i should realize that the gators are the mightiest football team in the history of college football…and tim tebow is the greatest quarterback ever. (Rumor has it that he has been mentioned as a vice presidential candidate.)

i just hope that florida dosen’t humiliate the dawgs too bad in jacksonville this year. we have a long way to go to be as great as them…..maybe one day our team will grace the cover of sports illustrated…. we can only hope. hang in there dawg fans!

Any talk of the Gators hanging 70 on the Rainbows after June Jones ran his mouth last year about Tebow being a “system QB”?

I hope the Ingram kid is alright. When the time comes for UGA/FL to meet each other I want each team to have all there weapons and both to be perfect. Will be the biggest game in the history of the rivalry.

Next time just hit post once. Also if you need help in reading comprehension, I did not ask for his OPINION. I asked if the Gators are talking about Jones comments from last year and if that has motivated them for this game. Where would that allow for him to give his opinion? Imo opinion that would be a legitimate question for him to ask of Meyer and Co.

I’m not worried at all about Florida. They are a one man team. Harvin’s hurt again, Tebow will get banged up early running the ball a bunch of times and their defense sucks. Richt’s plan last year worked perfectly—-he owns Meyer and UF now and the Dawgs should win that game easily, like last year. UGA’s only tough game is at LSU. UGA 40 UF 26

Thanks for the Florida story, Tony. For a Gator like me, it’s hard not to be excited about seeing what is surely the greatest accumulation of talent we’ve ever had. The fact that the Dawgs are also great makes everything even more interesting, particularly living here in Atlanta. Our schedule is more conducive than ever for a championship run; looking at it, you just can’t help but circle Nov. 1. However, the chance to redeem ourselves a little against Miami is also titillating. The traditional battles with Tennessee and F$U are always great; and after last year’s game it will be fun to play the defending champs in the Swamp. It’s great to be a Florida Gator!

baloney…What are you some kind of Dr. Phil? What are you anyway? Not a gator…shoot, maybe you are Dr. Phil.

As for all this, clearly UGA has had the ‘kiss of death’ laid on us - twice…Coaches’ and now SI (the ultimate). Those, along with the toughest schedule in the SEC, and therefore the NCAA, means we’ve got a hellovalot to deal with even before we get to Nov 1, and still more to follow. Maybe one of these ‘kisses’ cancels out the other.

I generally try not to let my Bulldog mouth get ahead of reality, but if we stay healthy - especially at QB - we’ll be just fine, thank you and UF will just be one more in the win column - like the rest of ‘em. Suffice to say that I like our chances.

DawgCrazy UF is a one man team? That has to be the most ignorant comment I’ve ever heard on a message board. And that is saying a lot.

PTC DAWG We define success by trophies and rings. With Stafford as a starter, how many does he have?

athensdawg I suggest that you wait until you WIN SOMETHING before popping off at the mouth about order in the universe!!! 10 years of dominance? More like 17. UGA has a 10 game lead in the overall series, not 20. Seeing as how UGA has a .493 since 1937, most of those wins were 70+ years ago. So if that keeps you warm at night, good for you.

DawgCrazy* Let’s see, Goff was 1-6 (.166) , Donnan was 1-5 (.200) , and Richt is 2-7 (.286) and 1-2 vs Meyer. I guess (by UGA standards) Richt does own Meyer.

Look UGA fans, you have every reason to be exited about this season. You have a very good team. BUT, until you win something, you need to keep your trash talking to yourselves.

It is real funny reading this. I read the Georgia papers and all they talk about is Florida. I read the Florida papers, and there is no mention whatsoever about Georgia.

Florida is in Georgia’s head and not the other way around.

Every other day Tony or Mark or somebody writes about the Gators. NOBODY in Florida is writing about the Bulldogs.

Georgia will lose to South Carolina because the USC defense stopped them last year, and it will do it again.

On October 25, after UGA loses to LSU on the road, then you guys can talk about Florida. But the way Georgia fans are obsessed with Florida before the first game is even played, I predict Georgia will have losses to SOuth Carolina, Alabama, and LSU before they ever take the field against Florida.

  1. Tebow is the most hyped player in the history of college football. What has he really done? He won the Heisman scoring on 1-3 yard touchdown runs. Real impressive.

  2. The excuses begin. Sure Harvin is exciting, but he is about as tough as a wet paper bag. He won’t make it through a whole season again this year.

  3. The coaches can talk all they want about proctection Tebow, but the bottom line is that him and Harvin are the only thing UF has on offense. He’ll carry the ball just as often, and will put up another monster year of stats on his way to another 4 losses.

  4. Who were some of the estemmed Florida NFLers on that screen? Danny Wuerfle? Ike Hillard? Ridell Anthony? Fred Taylor should be about the only one worth showing off.

  5. Just another excuse for Florida to use on their way to 4 losses again this year. Too bad none of their defensive players are getting hurt. The backups can’t be as bad as the starters were last year. That’s what happens when your coach only recruits WRs and QBs turned DBs.

Tebow=Teblow the only chance that Teblow has to get away from our defense is if he wears his tightest pair of jorts underneath his uniform. They give him the only chance he won’t be on his back 6-8 times. And Urban is a female dog. I leave everyone with an interesting bit of information, who has the better winning % Teblow or Stafford? hmmm i rest my case

I love it when UF and UGA go head to head, much like T-bag T-bow and his BF Percy. While they dream of their encounters with one another on Nov 1, SC and Az St will smack the pups before Sept is over and UF drowns in the TN river on Sept 20 causing chaos in the SEC East. UGA+UF=LOSERS!

Florida’s obsession with UGA may, in the end, work against them. Continuing to be upset about an incident that happened in the first quarter begs the question, Why did you do something about it during that game? To use a Southern sub-cultural colloquialism “They got they butt kicked” would appear to be the real problem. The Dawgs whipped them in every phase of the game even after spotting the Gators numerous unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. The tables have been turned. UGA now believes it deserves the be the top Dawg in the conference and Florida doesn’t like being un-seated from its perch.

Tebow as a starter: 9-4.

Good runner, but that’s it. He can’t throw deep, gets hurt easy and UF has no defense. I predict another 4 loss season for the overrated Uf gators, while UGA runs it up to a national title in Miami. I’ve already made hotel and plane reservations for miami in January—-no one in the SEC will stop Moreno, Stafford and Caleb King, who may be better than Hershel Walker. Dawgs: 14-0!!!

Tony:

In all seriousness, what has changed so drastically from last year to make the 4 loss Florida team a favorite to win the SEC?

I understand that they have picked up some recruits, but they are young and will take time, and I can’t see that alone as being the difference in a championship this year. Florida won in 2006 because with Leak, the running game with backs, passing game, and then Tebow, the offense had a lot of dimensions. In 2007, they had no big playmakers on offense except Tebow and sometimes Harvin. I still have not seen the discussion of the running game, which is still necessary to win in the SEC.

People may be getting ahead of themselves this year about the Dogs the way it happened with Auburn in 2003. I certainly believe the team in on the upswing after the strong finish in 2007, but 2009 might actually be the year that all the talent on the offensive line and in the backfield has matured and reached its full potential. That is potentially true for the defense as well.

In 2007 Urban (most feared coach in CFB) took the ‘06 MNC team and added to it a Heisman Trophy winner as QB and the Gators were able to rack up some impressive victories (see above posts for the list of victims) and were able to secure a Citrus Bowl berth. You can expect that he has more tricks up his sleeve for ‘08. So suck on it haters!

What “incredible tradition”? They have been good since the early 90’s and that’s it. If my memory is correct they did not even win an SEC title until the 90s. If Urban Cryer thinks that is an “incredible tradition” then-well, never mind.

UGA is over rated and I beleive that not only will the Florida game show this. They will beat the teams they should IE: Vandy, ASU and Tech. However; the high powered offense teams might throw a wrench into the works. Let’s also mention UT. Which has beat UGA pretty bad the last couple of times.

THIS JUST IN!!!! - UGA has decided that since there will be no competition in their magical run to the National Championship that a Super Bowl berth is what they deserve. Also just in!!! - my copy of Sports Illustrated - seems UGA is on the cover to win the NC - that seals the deal - SI is never wrong. The rest of the SEC is playing for second place in the conference. Personnally I don’t think responding to the media’s/writer’s questions about the Gators and the effects of the that TD Celebration last year is obsessing. If anyone has beeb obsessing it has been that same media and Gator fans who keep bringing it up all the time. BTW didn’t Coach Meyer write a book about this very subject?

As for the game it is a long ways off and both teams had better focus on their other opponents otherwise the game will have lost some of its luster. Both of these teams are loaded with talent and could run the table, it usually comes down to who gets and takes advantage of their breaks. Georgia happens to have better depth at this point but you never know how a season will play out.

I can tell you this, my friend on Florida’s staff only fears one team in the SEC and that is the Dawgs. So what does that tell you? To those making deragatory comments about Tim Tebow, please stop, Tim is a fine young man who happens to be a Christian and one hellavu football player that any coach in the country and I suspect all those on this Blog would love to have leading their teams.

I’m still wondering about what “incredible tradition” Meyer is talking about. Is he referring to the UF tradition of drunken louts who show up at the swamp in their cutoff bluejeans and tiddy rings and tattoos. Is he talking about the long running FLA tradition of assaulting with profanity any decent person who shows up to cheer for another team. How about the UF tradition of throwing beer or whiskey on opposing fans. How about the UF tradition of letting the UF students leave the stadium at half time so that they can get even drunker so that that they can return to further disgrace themselves and make life miserable for decent folks( at least UGA is cracking down on drunkenness at the games instead of encouraging it}. You must be really proud Urban. What about winning tradition on the field? They have been one of the best teams in the country since the 90’s. No person can deny that. Tradition, however, carries with it a connotation of long term success. I am old enough to remember what people thought of UF before Spurrier got there. Always loaded with talent, but always an also-ran in the SEC. Do 15 years make an “incredible tradition.” At UF I guess it does.

Okay folks, another reality check. For all of the criticism of the Gator defense, let me remind you of this little statistic….in 2007 the Gators gave up 3 TDs or more in only 8 games and 30 points or more 5 games. So, enough of the all offense and no defense talk. Also, we shut down Western Kentucky and held them to just a FG. So, once again….suck on it haters!

A few things here on the Gators just to “set the record straight.”

  1. Florida had the youngest football team of all the 119 schools in the BCS division of the NCAA last year. No question our defense was weak. We lost 9 starters to the NFL just on defense from our MNC team the year before. And our starting defensive line did not even play against the Dawgs last year because they were all banged up. Without question, Moreno had a field day!

  2. Late breaking news: football is not a 1-man sport! The Gator offense averaged over 40 points a game last year. One would think that if you’re scoring that many points, you would be better than 9-4. Bottom line: our defense last year could not get the other team off the field. Our record had nothing to do with Tebow’s play, which was exceptional to say the least.

  3. The Gators will be fielding our best offense EVER this year, even better than the Wuerffel-led offense in 1996. We’ve got play makers and we’ve got depth at every position. Our defense is still the big question mark (DT in particular) going into this season, but we believe it will be much better than last year.

  4. The Urban quote about the Dawgs’ celebration that everyone here seems to gloat about was actually made last January when the author of his bio was interviewing him. Reporters at the SEC meeting last month asked him about it. Urban was NOT the one who brought it up; thus saying the Dawgs are in the Gators’ heads is total BS. The only team in the Gators’ heads right now are the mighty Rainbow Warriors; you know, that mighty team from out west that contends for titles every year. After the way the Dawgs unexpectedly beat up on them in the Sugar Bowl, it’s no wonder that everyone is expecting UGA to go undefeated this year! My only hope for this season is that the Gators can somehow get by them with a “W” in our first game…

By GatorBoy

It is not whining to complain about poor sportsmanship. The Dawgs scored their touchdown and acted inappropriately and it was offensive to both the UF players and their fans. Mark Richt failed to understand the impact that his teams actions might have on the other teams players and fans and how it may be a distraction or upsetting. He along with refs stole that game from the Gators. Not to worry though, Coach Urban Meyer is busy cooking up a strategy for this years match up and as he stated, “its going to be a big deal.” As GatorChomp says….”BOOK IT”

Florida’s best receiver, Ingram, is out for the year with a knee injury. Percy Harvin, their best back, is hurt and will be about 80% the whole season. Tebow will get banged up early. UF’s running backs are terrible—-their offense is in big trouble against a tough schedule. UGA should easily win the east now—-no one is close to the dawgs. Miami, here I come!!!

The Gators, with Tebow at starting QB, beat Tennessee…and I believe that, my Georgia fans, was and is a BIG game every year…and I do believe Tennessee, not Georgia, won the SEC East last year. You Dawg fans bark a lot without much bite. At least Tebow has played in a NC game (and, as I recall, ran for a big TD in that game as well. Also, Tebow played great against LSU and Auburn last year. He did not fumble to ball in the 4th quarter against LSU to cost the game. He also played well against Georgia (hurt). Defense cost them that game, not Tebow. He also was the starting QB against SC. That, I believe with Spurrier at the HC, is a big game for Florida each year as well. Any of you Dawg fans ripping Tebow has no understanding of what a great QB is. And Tebow is great…therefore the Heisman. How many championships and Heismans has Georgia won with Stafford on the team? None! And yes, Florida did not win many of the Ga games over 20 years ago…when teams had no African American players and wore leather helments. But those were the good old days, right Georgia fans! How many games have you won since 1980…when complex offenses evolved and not just Herschel right and Herschel left. And for the one man team comment…keep believing that…because those 7 or 8 blurrs you will be seeing in Jax are the multiple speedy Gator WRs and RBs rushing by for TDs. Go Gators!

Remember this: last year the Gators had only 2 starters return on defense and had freshmen playing a lot of positions and even starting on defense. True…Tebow did not win any big games as an underdog but it isnt because of his efforts..thats for sure. His is going to be a legend in years to come for his 110% effort on the field and his 1950s lifestyle off the field…no keg parties for him. In 2008 UF will have an improved defense and will be waiting for uga in Jax trust me…and dawgies wont like what they witness on Nov 1. All you Gator fans out there talking about your offensive talent are missing the fact the championships are won with defense not offense. I completely agree that UF has some tremendous talent on Offense but they are playing a finesse game and they have a hard time sustaining drives against good defenses. If the defense doesn’t give up the big play and pressures Tebow, UF is very beatable. Further, because the defense practices vs. finesse rather than power, they are suspectible to being manhandled much like Nebraska in the 1996 Feista Bowl or UGA last year or LSU last year or Michigan last year.

UF won a Championship under Meyer but it was because they had an excellent defense and had modified the spread to suit Leak’s pocket throwing abilities.

My prediction is that the Gators once again underwhelm and when there is no Tebow to prop up this womanish offense, Meyer will be sent packing.

I disagree with all the criticism from Georgia fans about Tebow. The guy is tremendous. He deserved the Heisman, but how do you have a guy like like and lose 4 games? UGA lost 4 games in 3 years with Herschel who had much less talent around him.

So Gator fans, go ahead and cheer when you score alot of points against your lesser and athletically overmatched opponents and then cry when teams like UGA smack you in the mouths b/c you are playing a wimpish style of basketball on grass. Its like showing up to a gun fight with a knife. I don’t care skilled you are, you are in trouble.

Gators offense was ranked 70th when they won the NC and SEC.Zooks defensive talent was the reason they won.Urban needs to recruit another real small athlete or receiver, and tell offensive lineman like Zebrie Sanders last year they don’t have room when they have about 10 scholarships left.I hope Tebow wins another Heisman, and loses 3 ball games at the end of games choking.

All that kept them from the national title game was Les Miles campaigning and the unholy influence of ESPN over the BCS. But we will avenge that injustice in Baton Rounge Oct. 25 and whip the Gators, again, the next week.

With all these injuries to top players, UF will be lucky to beat UT, UGA, LSU or Arkansas. I’m hoping Richt and the Dawgs lay half a hundred on the gators for payback for Spurrier running up the score back in the 90s. A UGA rout is in store this year—-no one on UF’s defense can stop Moreno, Stafford and Caleb King! Plus, this may be the best UGA defense in 20 years. Roll it up—on to Miami.

Tampa Gator, What was Tebows stats with the game on the line against LSU and Auburn? The last two offensive chances was patheitic.Your own gainesville paper wrote he had three chances at the end of losses and did’t get it done!Great QB’s get it done! His stats look great when he is still in games against Western Kentucky up 35-3 going into the 4th quater,or scoring with 2:50 to go up 59 to 31 against Troy.Even up 49 to 20 against Tenn still in the game with under 5 minutes to go in the game. You said great game against LSU?Since when is 12 for 26 for 158 yards a great game?BTW he was 2 for 7 the last two series.Tampa my man your thinking about W Kentucky,Vanderbilt,Troy and Florida Atlantic.Superman scored only 17 points against Auburn,24 against LSU,and 23 against Ga.Not going to give him credit for the int for a TD Ga gave up.Sounds like I’m against him I’m not I think he is a class act,its Urban Leaving him in games constantly padding those stats when games were totally put away.

Hey Dorsey Hill,

Late breaking news: Tim Tebow DOES NOT PLAY DEFENSE. And, oh by the way, football is NOT a 1-man sport.

We got paired up with Hawaii by the BCS Bull Gator, we did not choose to play them. Your school intentionally scheduled the ‘powerful’ Rainbow Warriors for this year so I would watch the sarcasm when referring to our victory over them.

That could really come back to bite you if you guys choke in your opener against them, especially with their best player gone.

And before you flame me, I agree that we did not earn the national championship last year, LSU won it fair and square.

Bull Gator,

Check your facts Jack, there has been more than one national sportswriter who said that LSU won the national championship but they were not sure that they were even the number one team in the SEC. And they were not speaking of the Gators. UGA has won two SEC titles in the 2000’s as has UF. Overall UGA has won fourteen and UF six. All I know is that we can talk smack all day long in Gainesville, thank you.

Florida is the most hyped team ever. With 4 losses and a spread offense that has now been exposed. You cannot run spread in the SEC against the better teams and the reason why is the DEs and LBs are too fast and they rotate 2-3 deep. The spread is predicated on the defense getting tired and slowing down. Anyways, Florida’s defense stinks and everyone knows it. They will lose 3 again.

Munson,

I’m glad we agree that a school needs to win their conference championship first before being able to play for the MNC. I also agree that you had no choice in who you played in the Sugar Bowl, but the fact that UGA won big against such a lesser opponent, really does not add a lot of credibility to your number 2 final ranking or the fact that you’re ranked number 1 right now.

Regarding our opening day opponent, I think it’s kind of silly to be throwing stones when UGA opens with Georgia Southern!!?? You are kidding, right? At least the Gators are opening against a team that played in a BCS bowl last year…

But opening games notwithstanding, I believe UGA has the toughest schedule in the nation for this season. If the Dawgs can get through it undefeated, you guys will be most deserving to play in Miami at the end of the year!

Bull Gator-

I don’t think any SEC, or for that matter, any powerhouse team in the nation, can be sanctimonious regarding scheduling the LA-Monroes or Furmans, or other smaller teams for the purpose of filling out the schedule. In fact, with the brutality of the schedule, particularly, in the SEC, I think it’s a pretty good idea to schedule these teams as a first or second game to acclimate the players for the highly contested games later on.

Having said that, I find it hard to QUESTION any SEC team about the difficulty of its schedule. Also, App State demonstrated that every once in a while, it can bite you-as Michigan and Alabama can attest.

The dawgs offense will be scary good—the best backfield in the country, an experienced O-line, good receivers and a very good defense to shut down UF’s 1 or 2 man offense. UGA may run the table and go 14-0, but the worst case is one loss to LSU or Auburn. Either way, the dawgs will be in the title game in Miami.

ES,

We have the good fortune of having to play LSU every year. I think if I were you, I would hold off on belittling the number of points the Gators scored on the Tigers last year in Baton Rouge, until the Dawgs have a chance to play them out there the week before this year’s Cocktail Party.

It’s nice that UGA doesn’t have another bye week this year to plan another special end zone celebration. Maybe CMR can pull the black jerseys out of the closet to get you guys your first back-to-back win against the Gators in what, over 20 years? But I wouldn’t be counting my chickens quite yet until you see what’s left after your scrimmage against the defending national champs on their home turf!

You Florida fans have alot of nerve to complain about us having a bye week before the game as well as the celebration last year. I remember this comment by Florida and Spurrier. It went “Nobody ever scored 50 points against GA in Athens so we wanted to be the first to do it” talk about SUMG!! In my eyes nothing we could do to florida would make up for all the crap they talked over the last 15 years. I dont care if we win 100 to 0 this year and celebrate on EVERY TD. FACT: Florida SUCKED before Spurrier. They never even won a SEC title until he arrived yet to hear FL fans they have always been a national power. FACT: Urban cryer did win a NC BUT he done it with Ron Zook’s players. If you dont think Zook was a good coach just look what he has done with Illinois!! He really turned that program around!! No worries though, In the next 2 years FL will be on probation because of Urban Cryer’s recruting tactics. He will jump ship to win with someone elses players (like he has his entire career) and FL will go back to being the SEC doormat team like it was pre 1990. Get used to it Gators what goes around comes around and you guys have about come complete circle!!

Problem is, you have to be more than good, you have to be lucky, especially if you play in the SEC. SEC Championships are earned, and Rich has 2 so far, he’s brought us a long way, and hopefully we’ll be in the hunt for a long time to come.

Bring on a playoff…

Oh yeah, we didn’t pick Hawaii for our Bowl opponent, we along with most USC fans wanted our teams to play in the Rose Bowl. Would UGA have won? Who knows? But it would have been MUCH more interesting than the two game the BCS gave the Country.

ES,

Regarding the amount of points LSU gave up against Arky and Ky, they lost both of those games in 3 overtimes. Those two games you should put an asterisk beside, because it’s obviously far easier to score when you only have to go 25 yards after regulation rather than 80 yards when the defense is relatively fresh.

Another way to look at it, the Gators scored just as many points against LSU last year in Baton Rouge as did THE Ohio State University in the BCSC.

I find it amusing that any Gator fan would accuse another team of being overrated. Overrated is something that only the Gators would know about. Overrated QB, coach & team. I believe that all of the sports analysts finally came to their senses and chose a team worthy of the #1 spot for this season. Florida will be defeated (again) this season by UGA. UGA is simply the better team as they were last season. It is something that Florida will have to get used to for many years to come.

A few observations:

  1. Sad about Ingram. A great player—the best TE in the league—who could have turned pro but came back for his senior year and got hurt. Bad by any standard, even though I’m a Dawg fan.

  2. The Gators are in the Dawgs’ heads. They always are. The difference this year is that the Dawgs are in the Gators’ heads, too. Can’t help it. The road to any sort of title runs through that game for both teams. But given the competitiveness of the SEC, both teams had better be ready to play every week. UT, South Carolina, and LSU are common opponents who could beat either team, and even Vandy or UK could have a shot at either on them on a given Saturday. The key is being ready to play every week.

  3. The Ingram injury illustrates what I feel is Georgia’s biggest advantage this season: quality depth. Even at the marquee positions of QB, WR and RB (and also DB, LB, OL and DL), Georgia has the least dropoff between starters and reserves of any team in the league. By contrast, the Gators have NO MARGIN for error on the DL or in the secondary (and they also lack a single proven gamebreaker at RB). A couple of bad breaks and the Gators could go from being contenders to pretenders real fast.

  4. The above being noted, I think that Florida’s defensive shortcomings will be evident long before the Georgia game. Look for either LSU, Tennessee or Ole Miss (yes, Ole Miss!) to upset the Gators before they play Georgia. In fact, they could lose more than one of those games.

Fair enough Bull Gator, but the difference is that I am not on here belittling another team for a victory against GA Southern when they are on our schedule.

I’m just sick of all the crap we get for beating a Hawaii team that should have never been matched up against us, but that is the game the glorious BCS thought would be better than USC vs UGA. I’m not saying we would have beat USC as they have an outstanding team and program, but I would have rather seen that match up than the crap the BCS put us in.

By the way, all I said was that we did not earn the national championship last year. You have to play great football all year to earn the championship and we did not play great football at the beginning of the season. I did not say anything about having to win your conference as that is just not one of the rules. The BCS had their chance to make that an official rule and chose not to, so hate them for that not us UGA fans. I seem to recall an Oklahoma team that was allowed to play in the title game when they did not win their conference, where was the outrage then?
