The question at Bama: When do you play the rookies?

Tuscaloosa, Ala.-Last Friday I wrote that the talented freshman class at Alabama was about to have a reality check with the beginning of practice here in T-Town. Part of my thinking in making that comment was that I have seen so many overly hyped high school players and recruiting classes wilt early in their careers when they realize the true talent level in the SEC.

Then I decided that the comment really wasn’t fair. I haven’t seen these guys practice. I only know them by what others have written. So I got in the car and drove to Tuscaloosa to watch the first 40 minutes of Saturday’s practice, which is what the media is allowed to attend. Here is what I saw:

These freshmen are just now learning where to line up. Over the next few weeks they are going to be bombarded with tons of information and will spend a lot of time being confused. The learning curve for freshmen in this league is very steep. In Nick Saban’s system it’s even steeper. He does not baby freshmen when it comes to dumping a lot of information on them early.

But after you’ve done this for a while you can look at players-their size, their speed, and how they carry themselves-and tell that they are different. And this group of Alabama freshmen IS different.

Saturday was the first day that the freshmen were on the field with the upperclassmen. And it wasn’t that difficult to pick out the new guys. Everybody knows about Julio Jones and B.J. Scott, the talented wide receivers. Alabama is so thin at linebacker that Jerrell Harris and Donta Hightower are going to have to play. You can look at them and tell that when they learn what to do, they will make a contribution.

Word here is that as many as seven or more of these freshmen could find their way onto the two-deep for the Aug. 30 opener with Clemson at the Georgia Dome. Alabama was sorely lacking in depth when the Crimson Tide collapsed in the second half of last season. These freshmen will improve that situation.

“Last year we just didn’t have enough depth to overcome it when we hit a bump in the road,” Saban told me when we met in his office. “But now we have a group of really good young players. How they develop is going to go a long way into saying what kind of football team we can be.”

I don’t know how many games Alabama is going to win but this will still be a very interesting season for the Crimson Tide. Here’s why. In a lot of positions at Alabama a good, solid veteran player is going to be pushed by a younger, more talented player. Coaches have to walk a tightrope when dealing with this kind of situation. Even if the younger player has more talent, the timing of moving him into the starting lineup is very tricky.

If you make the move too soon the young player struggles because he’s not completely prepared. Then he loses confidence. Also, the veteran player who loses his job may go in the tank because he’s no longer the starter.

But if you make the decision to move the kid up too late that’s not fair to the team. You’re not giving your team every opportunity to get better.

This is not like the NFL where you put the best player in the position, period, and cut the other guy if he doesn’t like it. In college these things have to be handled with a certain amount of finesse because you don’t cut guys or trade guys or pick up guys on the waiver wire.

Here is the trick, one of the coaches told me. You hope that over time the younger player makes it abundantly clear to everybody-even the veteran player that he’s challenging—that he has earned the position. Then you make the move and hope that the veteran player will remain engaged. If he’s a team guy the veteran will keep playing. If he’s not, then there could be a problem.

Alabama’s coaching staff is going to spend the 2008 season dealing with a bunch of these mini-dramas. It will make for some lively discussions in the staff meetings.

I was reminded that LSU’s 2007 national championship began with a great freshman class signed by Saban and his staff in 2004. This Alabama class, that person told me, looks better. Time will tell.

All I know is that if these guys play as good as they look, Alabama will be a pretty decent team by the end of the year.

On a personal note: I want to acknowledge and say thanks to those of you who wrote words of encouragement concerning an upcoming change in my relationship with the AJC. Given the realities of the blogosphere the word has gotten out about some of the tough decisions a lot of us in this business are having to make. I’m not in a position to talk about it now but I hope to be able to do so soon. But I did want to thank you for the kind notes.

Tony,

Could the younger players actually make the vets play a little above their heads? I think its safe to say that Saban will put the BEST player on the field and don’t care who likes it! His job is to WIN football games and if that means hurting a players feelings, SO BE IT!!! He’s not a babysitter, hes a football coach. I hate it when everyone makes more of this than it actually is, THE BEST PLAYER WILL PLAY!!!! Their is not a game on the schedule that this team CANNOT win, not to say they will win all of them, but they have a difficult road schedule, BUT that is life in the SEC. My personal opinion is anything less than 9 wins will be a disappointment.ROLL TIDE.

P.S. The whole tide nation’s thoughts and prayers are with Coach Stallings!!!

Count me among the skeptical. Other than one great season at LSU, Saban is about an 8-4 coach in his career and has a losing bowl record. They will lose 5 or 6 this year.

I’m hopeful, but skeptical. I hope they have Croom on speed dial.

Excellent piece. I certainly expect a national championship contender within four years, and a 9-3 record this season, with a win over an overrated auburn team, would be a nice accomplishment on this road called ‘the process’.

In the SEC, you cannot count of freshmen and it sounds like that is where Saban is hanging his hat. Bama will beat Tulane, W KY, KY, Ole Miss, and Arky St. Bama will lose to Clemson, Arky, UGA, Tenn, LSU, Miss St and Auburn. 5-7 and no bowl this year…Best of Luck to you Tony and let us know where you end up…

What in the world is the AJC thinking? Shrinking the sports staff by half three weeks before “THE SEASON” starts? (And in Georgia, THE SEASON means only one thing - college football.) Letting the most insightful SEC football writer move on? NOW?

Doesn’t seem like good business to me.

Somebody please tell me what the hell is going on here?

Skip dies in his sleep and the AJC is getting rid of Tony.

I grew up listening to Skip and the gang.

Skip’s greatest gift was being able to tell you where all the people were from that caught foul balls.

One of the greatest talents I’ve ever heard.

RIP Skip and now on to Tony.

Someone please tell me what is going on with TB.

He’s the main reason I come to this site everyday,

Nobody knows more about college football than TB.

I love this blog and if its going away will miss it dearly.

I would guess Tony will miss this also.

I’m sure he loved writing about college football as much as I loved reading about it.

Not only did Tony cover college football but he also covered the ACC.

If they’re dropping TB at least please tell me they’re getting rid of Bradley and Moore.

Those two hacks are the luckiest men alive to have * jobs “writing” in a top 10 market.*

I am “The Hat’s” biggest fan & truely believe there will be a statue of him outside of Tiger Stadium one day, but when that happens, there should be a plaque to “Lil’ Nicky” real close to the base, because without him setting the base, many of us doubt if LSU would be where they are today.

3 guys were walking down a highway, all wearing caps of their favorite college teams (Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee)…

they happened upon a dead woman’s body in a ditch and immediately called 911 on their cell phones… the woman’s body was nude, and the guys decided it would be best to cover while waiting on the officials…the Kentucky guy takes his cap off, hangs it over her right breast…the Tennessee guy hangs his cap over her left breast…the Bama guy places his cap over her sexual parts…

the police arrive and begin inspecting the body…the cop lifts the UK cap, makes a note…he lifts the UT cap, makes a note…he lifts the Bama cap and replaces it, but with a puzzled look on his face…he starts to make a note, instead looks under the Bama cap again…still puzzled, he does this a few more times, staring intently at what was underneath…

‘Hey, that’s enough of that!’ the outraged Bama fan finally shouted…’Quit looking under there and let that poor woman have some dignity!’

‘Oh, I’m sorry, no disrespect intended,’ the officer replied. ‘I was just confused…there’s usually an a*******hole under a Bama cap…

Joe…No one is hanging their hat on a bunch of true freshman. You will see quite a few play out of necessity but it is likely that 15-17 will redshirt. As for your prediction on our record…BAMA will be in year 2 of the current staff and we will be a better team this year. So, your prediction of a 5-7 record is probably more of a personal pipe dream. While I dont expect a 10 win season, 8-9 wins is not out of the question. Once we get another solid recruiting class under our belts, BAMA will be working their way to the level of the top SEC teams again!

Has the AJC\Cox lost there freaking minds! Tony is one of the best college football writers going today, he gets a lot of readers to buy the AJC & to visit AJC.com. If you’re trying to increase your web presence then why would you force out one of your biggest draws? We just got a subscription for the paper but now we’ll probably not renew it based on this! I’ll also start exploring other web options for UGA news so that when Tony is gone I won’t be so dependant on the AJC! I understand cost cutting\downsizing & have been effected buy it. However it should be done intelligently! Getting rid of stars like Tony Barnhart & Bill Husted makes no sense. It’s never good to be identified as the reason an icon like Furman Bisher is being cut or forced out, even if he should have retired years ago. You let legends go on there own terms! (Much like UGA is doing with Larry but not like they did Dooley.) I have no issue with Maria Saporta leaving & agree with a previous post that you cut, Bradley, Moore or even Schultz. I know there going to say these people took a voluntary buyout so it was there decision. My point as valuable as Tony is you don’t give him that option! You do whatever it takes to keep him! If Lupick is an essential employee then so is Tony! Tony will have no problem landing somewhere that’s probably a bigger & better platform for him. Tony you should consider your own site devoted to college football however espn, fox, si, yahoo or sporting news would all be good places for you. An SEC network we can all view would be great too, instead of the CSS shows you’re on now with there limited & access channel looking production values. Bill Hartman is leaving WSB as well so I’m guessing he accepted a buyout as well judging buy the dialog on the show last night.

Best wishes Tony!

as for Bama these are all great points which is why i said earlier that the Clemson games is a must win for Bama (and possibly a 2 loss team from the SEC playing in the BCS champs)-if Bama gets kicked by Clemson there is going to be an enormous amount of pressure to play all these freshman early-possibly way too early-

Eric1,

So thats your comeback? A joke and i’m scared? Here is a reality check! Your “new” offense put a whopping 17 points up in the bowl game in regulation!!! That is gonna really turn the Barner offense into a real threat!!!Auburn loses 4 games this year INCLUDING BAMA!!!!!Your best receiver is gonna be Fannin, Defenses will take him out, and then where you gonna go? AUBURN NEEDS RECEIVERS!!!!!!!Problem is you will not be able to get the best in the state(at any position) each year because they will reside in Tuscaloosa!!!!So cover that with that Barner hat!!!!

Oh this is simple people. Barnhart doesn’t push buttons. He reports facts and well thought out opinions. He is what we call a “journalist”, a dying breed. The AJC has no interest in that. They want guys like Chip Towers who can put a negative slant on almost ANYTHING. You’ve got to put the readers “in their place”. Moreover, Barnhart obviously enjoyed his job and thought very highly of the game of college football, as most of us do. Again, such enthusiasm and positive energy has no place at the AJC. What a rag our hometown paper has become.

There’s plenty of receivers to go around with all the spread offense being ran in HS plus HS QB’s, RB’s & DB’s can be recruited as college WR’s. Then you have the athlete category those guys can end up as WR’s as well. They recruit AL & GA as home states AL & UGA can sign all the top receivers in each state so Auburn should be able to get there share. Worst case Auburn may have to recruit guys to play WR that are a notch below the top SEC echelon then coach them up. If there offense is productive enough & makes stars out of lesser recruits then you could see top guys start going there. That’s happened at Texas Tech it should be noted that Franklin & Leach are from the same linage so it wouldn’t be a shocker if that happened for Auburn as well.

GT is the team that I see having the problem recruiting receivers. With PJ’s plan to recruit QB’s then move them out to other positions if they don’t work out then that could become a hard spot to recruit as well. I think his offense can work in D1 but if that’ll add up to wins is the question. If they throw the ball more as he did as an OC then it might resolve any recruiting issues at those positions.

BTW the DAWGS aren’t having any of these issues rather us need more scholarship to sign all the kids that want to play for us!

Let the BS continue….for all you Barners not familiar with Terrence Cody..our JC transfer at noseguard….you will be come Saturday night Aug.30.Listed at 6’5” 380 eyewitness accounts from fall practice puts him closer to 6’9” 425.He can run the 40 in 4.85 seconds and benches over 700lbs.At the snap of the ball he knocks both the center and a guard(often both guards) 3 yards deep into the backfield. He then squashes all running backs between the tackles long before they reach the line of scrimmage. Our one-man defensive line allows our other 10 defenders to double-team all eligible receivers and have a linebacker running free at your QB.As you can see your efforts will be FUTILE and HOPELESS.Barners gets 2 field goals off of John Parker Wilson turnovers.Bama wins BIG.35-6.

Tony, I am saddened to hear the news of your having to move on from the AJC. AJC’s Sports section is simply NOT going to be tha same w/out your columns & especially here just prior to the ‘08 NCAA football season, in a word this really bites! I’ve had the ‘luck’ of being laid off from three diffenet firms since 1982 & it never felt good when it happened but in the end my station in life improved all three of those occasions. Here’s hoping the same happens to you Tony! On a related note, here’s hoping Cynthia Tucker is also on her way out, but that’ll only happen the day before Gabriel toos his horn! As for Bama, they gave every team they’ve lost to fits before dropping games and that was with inferior athletes and little depth. I personally think UGA & Auburn are about to experience some of what happened to Tenn the last couple of UA/UT games. ‘Bama will NOT be Back’ (totally) this season but I fully expect the UGA, LSU, & AU games with Bama to be barn burning events w/Bama taking at least 1-2 of those games. I’m picking UA to finish 9-3 but no worse barring MAJOR injuries. Wish I was wrong, but I don’t think so… Go Dawgs!!!

Will, You’re probably onto something with the Obama- Supporter comment. 8-)

Michael, IMO, your comment about AJC/Cox ‘losing their [collective] minds by allowing a talent like Tony to bolt is like a hammer meeting the head of a nail! (right on target)

Virtually every newpaper in the nation is losing market-share & I doubt there are many (if any) PROFITABLE newspapers still being published outside of maybe the WSJ. What all papers are facing is having to trim staffs not just to trim the red ink but slashing staffs in order to survive. Where most are going wrong is in allowing the editorial staffs that in most cases are ultra-liberal to begin with to make the decisions as to who stays and who hits the road. All too often that means trimming staff that ACTUALLY DO HAVE a following among the subscribers base often from a mentality of who best gets along with the decision makers. So in a real sense, the staffs are being further liberalized. So often the writers that cause the biggest ruckus day in & day out because the readership doesn’t see eye-to-eye with what is being written but the editors DO then the decision of who goes and who stays is tilted in a very unhealthy manner. To me newspaper editors are often perverting the framework of what the Fourth Estate is supposed to be doing in the first place in that they should be looking out for the citizens but instead are now setting up staffs that will be in lock-step with a liberal congess & a liberal Executive branch should Obama be elected our next POTUS.

You don`t depend on in-coming freshman to win in the SEC, help in couple positions, maybe. Bama deserves their position with LESS than .500 PCT winning in the SEC conference last 10 years, playing Coach Bryant role to coaches that could not wear his jock strap.. They should have kept bill Curry or Fran, it would have been a better situation especially LOSING to N. Illinois, LaMonroe, Auburn(6 years in row), LaTech, LSU, Tenn and Miss State on regular base. They had a few bright spots, beating Tenn 6-3, edging Vandy,Ole Miss and Houston… making CUM cry,
