Alabama-Virginia Tech in Georgia Dome could still happen in 2009
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Let’s start the week with some (hopefully) tasty leftovers from SEC Media Days:
1: Alabama-Virginia Tech in Atlanta could still happen: Virginia Tech has agreed to play in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff at the Georgia Dome on Aug. 29, 2009. The school put out a release saying that efforts were being made to secure Alabama as the opponent. Alabama plays in this year’s Chick-fil-A Kickoff against Clemson on Aug. 30.
At the time Alabama officials indicated the odds were against the Crimson Tide coming back to Atlanta in 2009. But on Thursday I met briefly with Crimson Tide Nick Saban and he told me that the deal could still get done.
Alabama is scheduled to go to Tulane in 2009 as a part of a contract that called for Tulane to play multiple games in Tuscaloosa in exchange for one game in New Orleans. Saban said if Alabama could move the Tulane game to another season and pick up another home game then he would be willing to come to Atlanta and play the Hokies.
“If we don’t do that then we can’t come (to Atlanta) because then we would have only six home games in 2009,” Saban said.
Don’t be surprised if ESPN/ABC, which will televise the Chick-fil-A Kickoff, gets involved and puts together a deal to make Tulane happy enough to move the game.
2: Saban may be traveling to Baton Rouge alone: Saban knows that when he returns to LSU this season, chances are he will not receive a warm welcome. For reasons I still don’t understand, some LSU fans are miffed that after two years in the NFL Saban returned to college football as the head coach of Alabama.
Because of security concerns, Saban says he will probably travel separately from his team when they go to Baton Rouge on Nov. 7. When I talked to Saban about it, he took a light-hearted approach.
“I was hoping I could get one or two players to ride with me but maybe not,” Saban said. “Looks like I may be going alone.”
LSU coach Les Miles doesn’t believe Saban has anything to worry about.
“We respect Alabama and are looking forward to the competition,” he said.
Yeah, right. Fans in Baton Rouge have been known to shake the buses of teams they DON’T hate. That will be an interesting week.
3: Spurrier still in charge of the offense: Much was made of Steve Spurrier’s announcement in the spring that he would turn a lot of the offense over to his son, Steve, Jr.
“He’s been with me 11 years and he knows it as well as I do,” Spurrier told me last Friday. “I just need to free up some of my time to do some other things.”
But understand that this does not mean that Spurrier is going to give up calling the plays, especially at crunch time. What Spurrier plans to do is put Steve, Jr., in charge of a lot of the preparation during the week. There is a lot of time-consuming detail work in putting together an offensive game plan and getting it on paper. Spurrier found that he was getting bogged down by it and not looking at the big picture of his program. “Bubba,” as he is known in the family, will do that work and still make recommendations from the coach’s booth upstairs during the game.
But when it’s third down at the opponent’s 10-yard line in a tough game, I still believe the guy in the visor will be calling the play.
4: Nutt says he’s in a better location: New Ole Miss coach Houston Nutt told me that he is excited about his new recruiting base compared to his old recruiting territory in Arkansas.
“There were 70 guys in Mississippi who signed Division I scholarships this year,” Nutt said. “We’re closer to Alabama. We’re closer to Georgia. We’ve got to go into Georgia because Mark Richt can’t sign them all. We’re closer to Florida.
“Arkansas was a pretty tough place to recruit because we were far away from things.”
Nutt wasn’t trying to knock Arkansas, just recognize that at Ole Miss he doesn’t have to travel as far to get good players. But this will come up again on Oct. 25 when Nutt takes his team to Fayetteville to play Arkansas.
5: Tuberville is on the DL: Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville always comes to media days early to get in a little golf, do some alumni functions, and spend some time on radio row at the Wynfrey Hotel. But Tuberville just had double hernia surgery and was moving a little slowly when I saw him.
“Yeah, couldn’t get in my golf but I’ll be back at full speed in a few weeks,” he said. “This is something that I needed to take care of.”
While Alabama has been making most of the recruiting headlines in the state, Tuberville said that the decision to install a spread offense for this season has already paid off with prospects.
“We needed to do something to score more points and to give our recruiting a shot in the arm,” Tuberville said. “I think hiring (OC) Tony Franklin and putting in this offense has done both. We’ll find out pretty soon.”
Tuberville said he already has 20 commitments for his 2009 signing classes. “I’ve never had that,” Tuberville said. “Not even when I was an assistant at Miami.”

Hmm. Time for a little perspective.
Fulmer, along with SIX other SEC coaches reported various recruiting violations of the Alabama football program in the 1990s. Fulmer may have been the star witness for the NCAA, Fulmer may have gotten some of his facts wrong, and, for all I know, Fulmer may have exaggerated, but Bamas program was not placed on probation because Fulmer alleged that someone from the coaching staff was sleeping with the wife of a prominent alumnus.
Bama earned every lost scholarship and every year of their probation for actual violations of the rules. For SEVEN different coaches to rat out a fellow conference member was a big deal. Without a doubt, it means that Bama was guilty of a great deal for over half the conference to be offended.
Florida got nailed in 1985 for recruiting. Georgia got nailed for falsifying academic records and violating standards in the Jan Kemp affair. Virtually every other program in the SEC has been on probation in the last 20-odd years because they got caught doing something that seriously violated the rules.
If you dont want to do the time, dont do the crime. And iffin you do, please dont whine that the witnesses are hypocrites or are otherwise bad people. Its irrelevant who turned you in; its only relevant whether you actually violated the rules. Your program did. Man up to it, as the kids say, and quit blaming others. Otherwise your collective fan base looks like the typical felony defendant who always blames someone else for the poor family environment in which the criminal was raised.
BTW, I couldnt give a big, fat rodents backside where the SEC holds its annual football media days.

You can’t understand why LSU fans would be upset with Saban for leaving LSU for the greener pastures of the NFL only to give it up after just 2 seasons and go back to a team in the same division? You’re dumber than you look then. Imagine Richt doing it and maybe you’ll understand.

Now that Les Kilometers (I call him that because he’s different) doesn’t have any of my players, the ship is gonna start sinking!!!!!My NEW team is gonna start a new dynasty in the SEC, and i will be the captain!!!! Oh, and by the way, before you start saying I am gonna leave in the next few years, NOT GONNA HAPPEN!!!! I just gave 1 million to the scholarship fund here at BAMA!!!! I wouldn’t give up that kinda cash to a university that i wasn’t 110% committed to!!! I’ll be here til I retire in 2020!!!!!

Clemson and fans will get their money’s worth both those games. We will be a heluva lot better in ‘09 so VT better watch out. Roll Tide Roll!!!!

Anonymous, get your facts straight DA. Most of the SEC schools including Ga, Tn, and KY, were negotiating for Albert Means services. Alabama was just the high bidder. And if you like fat snakes, I hope you get ratted out and then see how you like the rat.

Anonymous, get your facts straight before you accuse anybody of anything. Georgia violated no NCAA rule in the “Jan Kemp” episode and suffered no sanctions from the NCAA. Academic records were not falsified. That case was about wrongful dismissal of a faculty member, not violations of NCAA rules or falsification of records.
Georgia was following the NCAA rules, and as a result the NCAA implemented new rules about making satisfactory progress toward a degree as being a requirement for eligibility. The most significant probation for violating that rule was handed down to Georgia Tech about 7 years ago, not Georgia.

After Clemson kicks the crap out of alabammer, they will run, run run away from V.Tech. The sec likes to talk to the talk, but walking the walk is another matter to the big, bad, sec. Also, the sec plays 10 regular season games against the ACC this year. If the sec was anywhere near as good as they claim, they would probably win 8 or 9 of the 10 games. Actually, the sec will be very lucky to win 5. The sec is ALL HAT AND NO CATTLE.

Alabama wasn’t slimmy like Auburn who hired another SEC coach from a rival team (see Tubby “I’ll never leave Ole Miss except in a Pine Box”) or LSU who hired Dinardo directly from Vandy so why all the evny about Saban. I guess why have more when you can have LES.

Georgia routinely has only 6 home games, and we seem to do just fine.
UGA plays between the hedges 6 times this year. It’s what folks haven’t been able to wrap their little minds around regarding UGA’s OOC schedule. With FU always in Jax, and having our in state rival being GT, we almost always only have 6 home games. I’ve seen some SEC schools with 8 home games.
That said, I think Bama is smart to fatten up the OOC schedule on ACC teams. They are usually good for a win in UGA’s case.

Obviously you don’t follow either team because you are completely wrong about Saban. He has never slammed LSU since being the HC at Alabama. Even after ‘the hat’ has repeatly slammed both Saban and Alabama (which is funny because without Saban LSU and Les would have never won either NC). Les (as many LSU fans know) is living on borrowed time. He is a complete Baffoon.

UGA is 138-79 vs ACC teams.
The largest series by far are GT and Clemson. UGA is 59-38 vs GT and 41-17 vs Clemson. The next most played series is vs UNC, and UGA leads that one 16-12.

Anonymous, Fulmer rated out Bama in exchange for the NCAA not pursuing there investigation of recruiting violations against Tennessee (specifically regarding Tee Martin). Other coaches also informed the NCAA of the Means violations but only Fulmer did it in exchange for not getting probation for his own wrong doing. Thats what all the mess is about, the Bama supporters (alums & contributors) are upset that they got roasted while the rat Foolmer went free. Its upsetting to A LOT of SEC fans that Foolmer got off especially considering that these facts are in NCAA & federal court documents. However there is some vindication when consider what his record has been since hes had to play by the rules. What I dont get his Bama hired ole Slick Nick who up until now has been a Teflon Don but yet they act like hes the savior, can do no wrong & will stay there forever. (Just read Saint Nicks comments for the typically Bama fan rhetoric.) He wont be able to hide his tactics with the exposure Bama gets. During Sabins brief tenure theyve already been minor violations then rule changes in recruiting were made just for him so its not a far stretch to see probation as possibility in the future. LSU hates Sabin because there like a Bride being jilted at the alter if Miles can lead them to a title with just his talent that would help them get over it. Oh as the SEC turns!

Saban did turn LSU around and I give him credit for that. I have no animosity towards him but I do think it was low for him to go Bama. How would Dawg fans feel if Richt ended up at Florida?
Saban won 10 games or more 2 times in 5 seasons at LSU. Miles has won 11, 11 & 12 in his 3 seasons. Maybe he won with Saban’s players but you can have the best players but you gotta have coaching too.

Saban has NO pressure on him!!!!There is NO way he gets fired, iI don’t care if he loses every game, Saban is not on the hot seat. As far as the Clemson game, That game is critical for both teams!!I don’t think we have to win, BUT it has to be close with a chance to win late. Whoever wins that game will have a great year and the loser wont have a bad year, probably a 9 or 10 wins.

I can’t understand why any LSU would be upset with Saban. He left your program in better shape than when he arrived and you won a title with his recruits, so why be upset at the man that made your program into one of the best talent wise in the nation. Only USC can rival LSU in talent, and this is a comment that is made by a UGA fan, me. Saban will turn Bama around he just has to get his recruits in there. The SEC west will be fierce in a couple of years. The coaching over in that division is second to none. Bama has Saban, Ark has Petrino, Ole Miss has Nutt, LSU has a title winning coach in Les Miles, Auburn has Tuberville and Miss state has a winning NFL assistant and maybe the best in Sylvester Croome. The SEC east is just as stacked. SEC football, ‘nuff said.

Saint Nick,
If Saban loses to Auburn in T-Town (which would be 7 in a row), the honeymoon is over and everyone knows it.
He may not have pressure to win the west or even to go to a quality bowl, but he’d better beat Auburn.
They are paying him 5 million a year to win that game and I think a lot of folks are expecting a return on the investment.
By saint nick

5 million???Try more like 3.75 million. Auburn will not beat Bama this year. Auburn will lose 4 games this year including losing to Bama. That spread offense is gonna be horrible the first year. That spread ran 92 plays in the bowl game last year, but only scored 17 points in regulation. Great offense huh!!!The defense will constantly be out on the field, and they will lose games late because the defense will be give out.

To all the LSU fans commenting on here….I find it funny that you guys are so bitter about Saban being at BAMA but at the same time, Spurrier did the SAME EXACT THING when he left UF for the NFL and after TWO seasons, landed back not only in College Football and not only in the SEC, but in the SAME DIVISION. He took a dead UF program in the early 80’s and built them into a champion. Saban took a DEAD LSU program in 2000 and built them into a champion. UF fans still love Spurrier and whenever he returns to UF, he gets a standing ovation from the fans. Wish LSU fans had enough class to recognize that Saban did the same for them. But, knowing LSU fans, that certainly isnt the case!!!

Dorsey Hill…I dont know that the honeymoon would be over if we lost to AU this year. Most fans and the administration know what he has to work with and the job he has to do to rebuild the team. While we had a great class last year and will likely follow that up with another one (Top 10), we are still thin at a lot of positions. There is ALWAYS gonna be pressure to beat AU just like there is always pressure for them to beat UA. How do you think Tubs has held onto his job there. Fans definitely want a return on the investment but we also know it isnt going to happen over night. With that said, I think BAMA breaks the streak against the Alabama Cow College this year.

I know Texas picked up Wyoming, but as of right now for 2009 they have no team from the big 6 conferences scheduled as that just does not get it done. They are like LSU this year.

In the SEC, the majority of young men playing college football today are too young to remember the last time the University of Alabama won a National Championship. The same holds true about Auburn, Georgia, and Florida.
They do remember seeing National Championships from LSU and Tennessee, and a perfect season from Auburn.
Do you really think talking about past National Championships and past streaks matters to them? They’re just concerned with last year and this year.

BAMA has a real legit shot at beating clemson in 5 weeks, and I think the 4 point vegas spread confirms that. Clemson starts 4 new O-linemen and the entire unit is very inexperienced as a whole, so it may be difficult for Clemson to create holes for davis and spiller and to give enough time to harper. BAMA has some inexperience troubles of their own on the defensive front seven, but due to the nature of defense, particularly Saban’s D, the players who are not returning “starters” do have significant playing experience. On O-line players dont sub for one another as frequently. Also in Saban’s D he uses multiple schemes, so different players could line up at T, DE or Sam or Will, and of course BAMA employs a Nickle 40 % of the time. Also BAMA has a pretty big and mean looking JUCO T who will likely get plenty of time.
BAMA has to play well on O as well, which is a whole nother story, but it should be interesting and I’m comfortable with BAMA being 4 point dogs. But mostly I hope Clemson is ranked in the top 10 in the preseason poll, cause that would make for a pretty sweet week 2 and start of the year.

KR - You are an idiot. Florida won a national championship two years ago. Do you really think the kids playing college football today are too young to remember a game from 18 months ago?

KR, You’re an idiot. Florida won their last National Championship in 2006. I guess you forgot. Tennessee’s title was 10 years ago.
You War Chickens always brag about Auburn’s meaningless 2004 season where you feasted on the likes of the Citadel! Good luck with UT-Martin and those Louisiana directionals!
Auburn has the lone 1957 Co-championship to cling to and is highly suspect.
Bama, UGA, LSU, UT, UF have all won multiple championships in that time.
Face it. Auburn sucks and always will. Even Georgia Tech whips you like an Opelika prostitute.
Stick that up your War Eagle.

Leave it to auburn fans to complain about the past when in reality they’ve had no past, no present and no future. Their biggest claim to fame is beating their rival 6 times in a row while it’s been on probation twice and a number of coaching changes. I guess all the UGA rejects that go to auburn have short memories as well as low IQs.

Auburn fans hate it because no matter how bad the Alabama football program got, they still would play second fiddle to Bama. And, it will only get worse the better Bama gets!!!Sorry Aubbies

The War Chickens are kinda like the Lamecocks. They strut around talking big but when it comes to nutcuttin’ time they lay an egg.
Auburn has about as much tradition and history as south Cackylacky. Neither team is ever a real threat to win anything big but they’ll knock a couple of teams down every year to pump up their Napoleonic ego. Beating Bama is no big deal with the Bear being gone anyway.

ROLL TIDE ROLL!! NOTHING COULD BE SWEETER THAN A BAMA VICTORY OVER THE CLEMSON TIGERS SHH! BE QUIET, CLEMSON THINKS THEY HAVE A GREAT COACH. NINE WINS TO THE TIGERS IS A FANTASTIC SEASON. SORRY THAT JUST DOES NOT WIN NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS. MAYBE CLEMSON WILL KEEP BOWDEN FOREVER.

I think Bama & Clemson or Va tech playing in the state of Georgia without playing GT or UGA is total BULL**. I know our football recruits are better than those two combined, but they should stay put in their own states! There’s alot of people that feel this way and some of the BIG DAWGS in Atlanta should put a stop to this. Well too late w/clemson, but still have enough time for bama/va tech. Can I get an Amen Dawgs & Jackets!!!!

Dr. Zaius and gatorfan96: Sorry, it was a typing error on my part. I dropped Florida in the wrong paragraph.
The point is this: 18-22 year olds really only remember seeing Tennessee, Florida and LSU win National Championships from the SEC in their lifetime. They also remember Auburn’s perfect season. They have no memory of Auburn, Alabama, or Georgia’s National Championships.
All of this talk about streaks and past histories (does “15 of 18” or “12 National Championships” ring a bell?) is just something that today’s players read in a book. To them, football started within the last decade, give or take a year or two.
Try living in the now rather than in the past.

KR,
Your still an idiot!!!! Tradition is a huge selling point in recruiting. Why do you think the SEC year in and year out have the best conference in the country? Because of the tradition!!!!!Most SEC schools have storied histories and thus makes recruiting much easier. If you were a real football fan you would KNOW this!!!!As far as Auburn’s NC, noone in the world was alive the last time Auburn won a NC!

r.check…said Jan Kemp was about wrongful firing…because she blew the whistle on UGa cheating by fudging grades…so those students could stay in school…and maybe learn to read so they could work at the post office after their utility work at UGa was done…in lieu of working on a garbage truck! just Google that and read the ESPN story.

The Big Dawgs in ATL should put a stop to these games being played by out of state teams, in the state of Georgia, unless they’re playing either GT, Georgia or G. Southern. All of the Georgia schools should make a stand on this matter.

I agree with you dogtheboothunter….but after Clempson whips Alibammer this year, perhaps Nick might think othewise about opening in Atl against an equally strong ACC team.
ps…it would be fun to see the dogs open the season with a real team.

I hope we (Alabama) don’t play Virginia Tech in Atlanta. I’d rather play a home and home with Va Tech than give Atlanta the time of day. We set up a game with Clemson and look at the way Alabama fans are treated by Atlanta residents on these blogs. The arrogance of Atlanta media and Atlanta residents makes the area very unenjoyable. Instead of rolling out the red carpet to visitors willing to spend money in your city, Atlantans and the Atlanta media consistently mock and insult Alabama fans. Tony Barnhart’s ridiculous insults towards Birmingham were the last straw. I hope Alabama never associates itself with the vastly overrated, polluted, suburban sprawled hellhole known as “ATLAAAAANTAAAAH” every again except when we’re forced to for the occassional SEC Champ game.

bigeasy830;
I agree with your overall assesment of the talent level across theboard in the SEC. I fully acknowledge that it si the top conference overall, PAC-10 is raising it’s overall performance but is still the third best after SEC & Big 12 for top to bottom eval. SoCal is the top talent team in the country, not me saying it, try the NFL scouts who boviously spend a great deal of time in the South. Coach Carroll has shown the ability to go into Dixie to recruit against the SEC schools, not to mention the rest of the country. It’s gonna be a FUN season!! Fight On!!!

dawgthabootyhunter….i would enjoy seeing the “Big Dogs” in Atlant trying to put a stop to teams like BAMA, Clemson, Va Tech, etc from playing in the Dome. At the end of the day Money talk and bull…well, you know the rest. The Chick Fil A bowl nor the city of Atlanta would turn down the revenue they will get from teams such as these coming to town. And there is nothing the “Big Dogs” nor any complaining UGA fans can do about it. So quit your crying already!

Atlanta should try and get Duke for an SEC opponent. Conidering how weak the ACC is becoming, Cutcliffe could be the tougher opponent in a couple of years. No offense to the mighty ACC teams like Wake Forest and such.

I don’t know that Alabama is stepping up playing VaTech vs. playing @ Tulane. Which team played the Tigers tougher last fall? Didn’t Tulane have a late 1st half lead before the Wave crashed in the second half? Nobody had moved the ball on LSU like Tulane did to that point in the season. That Tulane team may not be very talented, but that coach sure does a good job. Be interested to see how they do in his second year, without that amazing RB that da Bears got.
