Clemson knows Bama game in Dome will be huge

Greensboro, Ga.-A look behind the scenes here at the ACC preseason football meetings at Reynolds Plantation:

1. Alabama has Clemson’s attention: As was the case last season, when Clemson opened at home with Florida State, the Aug. 30 opener with Alabama at the Georgia Dome has the ACC favorites very focused on getting ready for the season.

“We were focused in spring practice. We were focused during summer workouts and we’ll be focused when we get to camp,” senior quarterback Cullen Harper said. “We’re opening with an SEC team on national television. This is a big stage and a whole lot of people are going to be watching. To get where we want to go, we have to get this season off to a good start. This is our chance to do that.”

Clemson will be favored. The Tigers have more players. But it is still Alabama. Alabama wants to win. Clemson HAS to win. Should be interesting.

2. Eagles already miss Matt Ryan: Boston College quarterback Matt Ryan came to this event a year ago and made his presence felt. He was an impressive guy and it was clear from listening to him talk that Ryan was going to have a big year. He did and became the No. 3 pick in the draft by the Falcons. On Sunday Ryan still had a strong presence at these meetings. “I’ve done 10 television interviews and they all started with a question about Matt,” said tight end Ryan Purvis. “It’s hard to replace a guy like that. He was just a vocal leader.” Ryan just wasn’t a vocal leader. He led by example. He made things happen. BC folks will tell you and Ryan has joined Doug Flutie as the best leaders the school has ever had in football. Ryan will be replaced by Chris Craine, a senior from Mechanicsburg, PA. Crane threw four passes, completing two, as Ryan’s backup last season. He has skills but has not been tested. After opening with Kent State in Cleveland, Boston College hosts Georgia Tech on Sept. 6.

3. Miami gets rid of “cancerous” attitudes: It sounds like Miami was not a very fun place to be last season. The Hurricanes were 5-7 overall (2-6 ACC) in their first year under coach Randy Shannon. But Miami didn’t just lose last season, they were embarrassed more than once. The worst moment was a 48-0 loss to Virginia in the last game in the old Orange Bowl. Dozens of former players had come back for the occasion and the Hurricanes went out and laid a goose egg. Things have changed since last season, said offensive tackle Jason Fox, who expects a different level of commitment this season.

“The difference in the attitude of this team and last year’s team is like night and day,” Fox said. “We got rid of a couple of guys who had cancerous attitudes. They only cared about themselves. Now we have a bunch of guys who are focused on becoming a team.”

Fox is part of a new players’ committee at Miami with the power to identify these kinds of problems and take action.

Miami opens its 2008 season on Aug. 28 against Charleston Southern. It will be the Hurricanes’ first game in their new home, Dolphin Stadium. The Orange Bowl Stadium, in case you had not heard, was taken down by the wrecking ball.

4. Florida State’s “identify crisis”: Drew Weatherford, Florida State’s senior quarterback, said the 7-6 records of the past two seasons have been a reality check to the players in the Seminole program.

“I think some of our guys just thought because we had a spear on our helmet we were supposed to go out there and win 10-11 games,” Weatherford said. “I think we had an identity crisis at some point. We forgot what it means to play at Florida State.”

Weatherford, who threw for 2,049 yards and nine touchdowns last season, was brought here to represent Florida State at media days. But I’m hearing that offensive coordinator/head coach in waiting Jimbo Fisher really likes the ability of sophomore Christian Ponder to make plays. Weatherford will also be pushed for playing time by sophomore D’Vontrey Richardson of Leesburg. So Weatherford, who is an impressive individual, is probably going to have to fight to keep his job before this season is over.

5. Wake not satisfied with nine wins: You know that Jim Grobe has changed the culture at Wake Forest when the Deacons say they were not satisfied with last season’s 9-4 record. The season before Wake Forest won 11 games and their first ACC championship since 1970.

“We were very disappointed with the way we finished last season,” said Aaron Curry, who set an NCAA record for linebackers when he returned three interceptions for touchdowns. “We set a standard the year before and we don’t want to go back.”

Wake Forest started 0-2 last season and then won nine of its last 11 games. One of the losses was by one point (17-16) to Virginia on the road. In that game Sam Swank, one of the best kickers in college football, missed a 47-yard field goal with two seconds left.

And keep this in mind. Clemson will be picked to win the Atlantic Division by the media at this event. Clemson should win the division and the championship game. But if the Tigers stumble, don’t be surprised if Wake Forest jumps up and wins the division again. Clemson goes to Wake Forest on Oct. 9, a Thursday night.

Here’s a bonus note that is not ACC related:

Georgia State coaches go to work: There should be announcement pretty soon but Georgia State’s first three assistant coaches-offensive coordinator John Bond, defensive coordinator John Thompson, and George Pugh-are scheduled to be in their new offices today. Georgia State will begin playing a limited schedule in football in 2010.

I fail to see why Clemson “HAS” to win this game. It’s an interesting game, but not a MUST win for either team. Clemson is the only team with a legit chance to even win their conference. Other than that, it’s a recruiting trip into Atlanta for both teams.

still wish the teams in the Big East stayed and Penn St had joined instead of going to the Big 2

This game is huge for Clemson to win. A win over Bama should propel the Tigers the confidence they needed to take care their games in the ACC. Nothing less then a 10 or 11 win season will be a big diappointment. OK Tigers it’s time to move up the next level with the college football elite. Go TIGERS!!!! Clemson should break out the all purple for the Bama game!

Bama sucks. Clemson sucks. Plain and simple so who really cares about two mediocre teams? Bammer goes 6-6 and back to the Shreveport bowl. Bammer really knows how to waste money. You guys might want to consider bringing Bear back from the dead. Oh wait, I forgot that Saban was Bear incarnate. WAR DAMN EAGLE!

I love it. “Break out the purple” It would be a cold day in he** when Bama ever would change a uniform for one game. That is called tradition. Maybe UGA will have a “blackout” or have a endzone dance party for the Tide. Pending they score.

Ears is gonna get it handed to him this year. UI would be very worried Barners, that spread offense is gonna be crap!!!! You scored 17 points in regulation in the bowl game!!! You ran 92 plays and only scored 17 points!!! GREAT OFFENSE!!!!!Ears’ offensive “project” will cost him dearly with about 4 loses this year!!!ROLL TIDE!!!

Hey WarEagle,

I like how you say Clemson sucks, yet it was just a few months ago that your precious team had to go to OT to pull off the victory. So if Clemson sucks sooooo bad, how good is the Barn?

I am a Bama fan and I expect my team to show up on 8/30. Not saying we will win, but we will defenitely keep it close. No way it’s a 17 point game like Owen says.

Vegas has the line at 5. Maybe they know something….. afterall the weak link in Tommy Bowden’s team is…… well Tommy Bowden.

Good luck to both teams! And if Clemson wins…. I hope they have that magical season.

Hey Bama fans…. now don’t say stupid things like we are going to walk all over Clemson or something. That is just idiotic. Did you not see how they ran all over FSU the first half of last season’s opener? And it’s not like Bama it always starting fast.

As a Bama Alum, I beleive we can beat Clemson. Not saying we will, but I think it will be a close and very interesting game, hopefully making us 1-0.

And to my fellow SEC fans out there…. I have a question. After reading the comments on this site, does anyone else feel like rooting for Ga Tech when they play the bulldogs? I was always a GA fan and a Mark Ritch supporter….. but come on…. what egos. These people act like they invented football

Its me good ole Mark Ritch, I changed my last name so Bamers can spell it easier. We already whipped Clemson pretty good and now I’m ready to whoop up the Crimson Tide. In 2002 we played the Tide close in T Town even though we had far better talent on the field. In 2003 we knocked their lights out in Athens, our future NFL defence took out Brodie and sorry a*******ed Spencer Pennington was left to clean up the mess. Well 2007 reminded me a lot of 2002. Over hyped with ESPN Gameday in town, but we came through. I have a good feeling 2008 will end up much like 2003. I hope John Parker has good health insurance because, Atkins, Owens, Ellerbe, Curran, and Jones will be ready to knock him out of his Hoover haircut. Does the Tide even have enough LBs on the roster to stack the box against Knowshon? We already ruined Two Thousand and Saban so now its time to screw up your 2008 season. Best Wishes, Mark Ritch

Honestly, really, the game is a glorified recruiting exhibition for Clemson and Bama. Why else play in the Dome, both teams have stadiums that seat more than the Dome. Both campus’s offer MUCH better tailgating opportunities.

That said, if Bama can’t beat Clemson, they are hurting worse than I thought.

Sure is a lot of BIG TALK from Bama fans. This from a team that lost to Miss. State and NE LA, somebody like that, last year and lost to Awburn for the umpteenth time. How is Saban working out for you with all that $$ you are paying him??

saint nick, Uh, last time I checked Bammer hung their hats on TRYING to beat Auburn. As far as SEC championships, yeah we have one in the past 10 years. BUT, we are the only team since Tenn to to undefeated in the SEC. Not our fault a stupid computer kept us out of it. And don’t bring up the Citadel because your team is playing them.

Hey WarEagle, Got me. Seems GT played their best when we came to town and then forgot they were playing 10 more games that season. At least when they did beat us we won 11 games that season and not 6 like Bammer does every year.

In all seriousness though, I like Auburn. I just didn’t like you trashing the ACC.
PTC Dawg, why are they hurting so bad if they can’t beat Clemson? Clemson is preseason 13, where is Bama? I realize that preseason polls don’t mean a whole lot in terms of how good a team actually is, but I mean come on. Clemson waits until late in the season to choke, but don’t worry, your stupid mutts will choke early.

By WarEagle

saint nick, You really are a troglodyte. Never said I got my MBA from Auburn you dope. By the way, SIX YEARS my idiotic inbred trailer trash friend. Can you count to six? Did bammer teach you basic arithmetic? Do you have that many fingers on your webbed hands? Recruiting hasn’t really helped a lot of teams. Hell, Notre Dame recruits better than most schools and where did they finish? I’m sure your recruits will wind up in prison. And we’ll be celebrating 6 more years of beating up on your pathetic little team.

By WarEagle

July 21, 2008 5:10 PM | Link to this

Hey WarEagle, Well, the ACC speaks for itself in football. I mean, it used to be Florida State and no one else but now that VT has dominated the ACC it really has gone down hill. ANY team is better than Bammer. Bammer fans don’t have much to cheer for these days and so they have to bring up the Bear Bryant days to make themselves feel better. Oh, and they watch Forrest Gump over and over again to see Bear on the big screen. Makes them feel better about themselves and how 40 years ago they were a good football program.

Now about your comment on UGA. They have a ton of talent but like every year, they celebrate winning a NT before the season even starts. I see them losing at least 3 games this year. No way they beat LSU, FL or Auburn. If they do then I will wear a UGA shirt from now on and call myself Hercshell.

Has anybody else noticed that the Alabama - Clemson game chased Georgia Tech out of Atlanta on August 30th?

They did not want to play their game with Jacksonville State before a smaller crowd (group?) at Grant Field on the same day Alabama plays Clemson in a sold out Georgia Dome.

Tech was originally scheduled to play on August 30th, but moved their game to Thursday night (August 28th) ALTHOUGH IT WILL NOT BE ON TELEVISION.

It will be webcast though, in case you want to watch a “football game” on your computer. What a bunch of losers.

I know some of you people dont realize he has a rebuilding job to do but too many of you let your hatred for BAMA get in the way of that! Its ok. We have all seen what Saban can do to rebuild a team when he took LSU from the SEC dumpster to the SEC title and national title. He left Miles with a full cupboard of players and he has done very well on his own there as well. If you think he will not build BAMA into a power again, you will just be disappointed. Bama fans: You’ve got a great history to be proud of…but right now..you’re a joke. Get your act together and THEN talk about how great you are instead of endlessly relying on how great you WERE.

Auburn fans: You’ve got 6 wins against Bama…and nothing else, so get over yourselves. (and don’t remind me about your wins over top-five teams when you turn right around and get beat by the likes of MS State.)

Clemson: It’s time now..NOW to prove you’re relevant

USC fans: YOU ROCK!!! NC champs 08-09!!!!
