Alabama at Dome in 2009 far from done deal

Let’s begin today’s visit with a couple of “Not So Fast” items.

1. Alabama at Dome in 2009 far from done deal: Virginia Tech announced yesterday that it had agreed to open next season by playing in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff at the Georgia Dome on Aug. 29, 2009. Virginia Tech released the information on its website even though no opponent had been signed. In that release the school said that Alabama would be a possible opponent. But I heard from somebody in the Alabama football building last night telling me that the odds were against the Crimson Tide coming back to Atlanta for the second straight year. Alabama opens the 2008 season against Clemson on Aug. 30 and is thinking about playing Duke in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff game in 2010. Alabama will also have a rookie quarterback in 2009 as John Parker Wilson moves on. The Crimson Tide might not want to throw a new QB against Bud Foster’s Hokie defense.

2. SEC Network still on the table: A couple of media outlets in Orlando reported this week on Florida’s huge multi-media deal with the Sunshine Network that will pay the Gators somewhere between $8-10 million per year over 10 years. One of those stories strongly speculated that Florida’s signing of such a deal means that an SEC Television network is not going to happen anytime soon. Why would Florida sign such a deal if the SEC, which controls all football and television rights, was going to form its own network?

I talked to Charles Bloom, the director of SEC Media relations, and others close to the process who told me that all of the league’s options are still on the table as negotiations continue to hammer out a new TV deal with CBS, ESPN, and its other television partners. Those negotiations, I’m told, have reached a very sensitive period and everybody on both sides wants to keep all of their options open.

Do I think there is going to be an SEC TV network when the new deals start in 2009? No I don’t. I think given the the popularity of SEC football, the league will get a very attractive deal and will not have to create a network with all of the distribution hassles that go with it. But it makes for a great bargaining chip.

3. Kudos to Stinchcombs, Greene: We read way too much about athletes getting in trouble. The fact is that every school has about 100 players in its program and it’s usually 8-10 guys that keep coaches up at night and keep reporters checking the police blotter. But if you’re a fan and you love the game, it is discouraging and you grow pretty tired of reading about it.

That’s why it’s refreshing to see what former Georgia players David Greene, Matt Stinchomb, and Jon Stinchcomb are doing in an effort to give back. On Saturday they are hosting their annual Countdown to Kickoff children’s charity event at the UGA practice fields in Athens. There is golf on Friday and a fans day on Saturday, July 19. Over 22 former Georgia players are scheduled to participate. They will be signing autographs and there will be games for the children. There is more information, including the chance to buy tickets, at their website www.ugakickoff.com. All proceeds from the event go to four charities all dealing with the care of children. This is a good thing.

4. Price of football going up: Georgia is not the only place in the SEC where it is going to be hard—and pricey—to get a football ticket this fall. Thanks to some fine work by Jon Solomon of the Birmingham News, it looks like the minimum donation necessary just to buy a ticket has gone up about 80 percent over the past 10 years in the SEC. The fact is that while a lot of people complain about the BCS and the lack of a playoff in the sport, the popularity of college football, and thus the ticket demand, is at an all-time high. The good news in that for schools is that they can charge a high premium for the right to buy tickets. The bad news is that younger fans, like recent UGA grads who are just getting started in their careers, can’t afford to buy tickets of any kind.

5. What will happen to Ezekial Knight, Alabama linebackers? Alabama’s linebacker problems took another hit Wednesday when the school declared senior Ezekial Knight “medically disqualified” for the 2008 season. Knight’s health status cannot be completely revealed because of privacy laws but it has been reported that he had surgery in 2006 in an effort to correct a heart murmur. Now comes word that Knight will try to leave Alabama and play at a lower division. Whoever signs Knight needs to be very careful. I just hope the kid and the new school don’t go doctor shopping.

Alabama is now down to basically one linebacker they know can play, the splendid sophomore Rolando McClain. Knight, who started at outside linebacker last season, is gone. Prince Hall, who started five games last season, is on indefinite suspension for an undisclosed violation. He may or may not get back on the team. Jimmy Johns, who may have given some depth at the position, has been kicked off the team after being arresting for cocaine distribution. This position is a big concern for Alabama.

The Payroll Tide is very gung ho about playing in the GA Dome before the season starts because Nick knows they won’t ever make it there for the SEC Championship game…..That way he can at least tell his recruits that every year bama plays in the GA Dome.

A possible SEC Network could be one reason Florida would sign a big money deal NOW… while they can still get that kind of money.

July 17, 2008 9:09 AM | Link to this

So…no homefield advantage for either team? Do they do this because the Dome is set up better for TV, or is it the seating capacity? Because if that’s part of it, then why wouldn’t UGA use the Dome in years when their fanbase is as swollen as it is this year? It seems weird to me that two out-of-state teams are opening their seasons in Atlanta. Can someone shed some light on why they’re doing this?

Will the SEC games on Lincoln Financial, or whatever it is called this year, be in high definition?

Bob,

Yes, they are supposed to be in HD this year.

Wreck’EmTech,

The Dome holds less people than the UGA stadium. It would make no sense to play a game there.

By Tony Barnhart

July 17, 2008 9:24 AM | Link to this

To Wreck’Em Tech. You’re going to see more and more of these neutral site football games. The schools do it for two reasons: Money and exposure. Both Clemson and Alabama will make about $2 million each from the game in Atlanta and all they have to do is show up and play. They don’t to pay to manage the game. The biggest reason to play these games is recruiting. Alabama wants to make inroads in the state of Georgia in recruiting. Clemson already recruits Georgia heavily. To play in Atlanta gives them great exposure to potential recruits.

Saban is pond scum. He won’t agree to play Virginia Tech but Alabama is “thinking” of playing Duke? After another 7-6 campaign (assuming another Independence Bowl win) this year, his record at ‘Bama will be a glowing 14-12; or, about $1.2 million (rounded up, at that)per win!

I contend the out of state teams using the Dome are using it STRICTLY for recruiting purposes right here under our noses.

Most of the big time SEC Stadiums hold more than the Dome, so what other reason could it be? The Bama/Clemson game would have been just as big at either of the schools stadiums. Maybe Bama and VT are just afraid to play a home/home big time OOC game.

As to #4, it’s usually fairly easy to get tickets before any game in Athens, and except for 2 home games this year, the price will be much lower than face.

By Wreck'EmTech

July 17, 2008 9:34 AM | Link to this

TB, that makes sense. So how do our in-state teams respond? I guess UGA or Tech couldn’t go do this in another city? Atlanta’s kinda the biggest hub around here until you go North or pretty far West (unless I’m forgetting a city). It sounds like something our teams would want to try to prevent or jump on pretty quickly. Thoughts?

By Wreck'EmTech

July 17, 2008 9:36 AM | Link to this

TB, that makes sense. So how do our in-state teams respond? Do Tech and UGA not like this happening, or can they do this in another nearby city? The problem is I can’t think of a city quite like Atlanta to do a game like that in unless you look North or pretty far West. Thoughts?

We were scheduled to play Duke at their place in 2010. Better in the Dome than there. BTW, Bama WILL play twice in the Dome this year. Once against Clemson, and against UF in the SECCG.

It is good that Stinchcomb and Greene are doing things to improve Georgia’s image. I am not sure about the Stinchcombs, but David Greene was recruited and signed by Jim Donnan. There are some good citizens, even on Richt’s teams, but they are overshadowed by Richt’s bad boys.

Listen you idiots,

If you think for one second that we are gonna back out for “being afraid of VT”, you need to be beaten with my fat wallet. We are gonna take over GA in recruiting thats why we want to play nuetral site game in the GA dome twice every year. Ezekial Knight is a great kid, but his health is more important than him playing football. I’ve got THE best linebacker in the SEC in Rolando, Prince Hall will be back, Harris will be freshman AA. So, what do I have to worry about!!!!We are gonna win this western div. this year. IT IS WHAT IT IS!!!!! LSU don’t have any of my recruits left, Barners are gonna suck with that new spread offense, nutt is gonna fall on his face, POOHTRINO don’t have no good players left, and Croomie wants my job, just ask my boy ole ball coach!!! Me and ball coach are gonna play Shoal Creek next week and make fun at All the coaches around the SEC. WE will win the west, Take it too the bank!!!!

To PTC DAWG

VT is playing a home/home against NE in 2008/2009. VT is willing to play big time schools ANYWHERE. OSU, PSU and WIS are a few who have paid VT to back out of agreed home/home games. “Big time” schools i.e. schools that ruled CF until the 90s don’t want to face VT early in the season because of the Bud’s defense.

this could be an ugly year for bama but i imagine the tide will roll in the not too distant future

there will be 6 or 7 teams in the SEC that will compete for the championship year in and year out

top to bottom there simply isn’t an arguement as to which is the best conference college football

The SEC should have its own network..it would more fun to watch than the Big Ten network. At least the games will be better to watch. Im not worried about other teams playing in the Dome. GA has and will always have great recruiting classes. Plus, we have and will recruit more players outside of GA..i.e. Aaron Murray, Jordan Love, etc.

HA— to the poster that said VT is afraid to play home/home OOC games.. you are just WRONG.

Although VT doesn’t always win ‘em VT consistently schedules tough OOC games.

4 years ago we beat LSU at home, last year they beat us at home.

We currently have Nebraska schedule for a home/home series

Wisconsin paid us to back out of our home/home schedule a few years back

OSU paid us to back out of our home/home schedule a few years back.

Penn St. Same as above

I could go on, but I have made my point. VT might not always win the big game, but you cant say the hokies are afraid to schedule the big game.

Sweet Homer Bama: You got the verb tense (ask someone to explain it to you or google) wrong. Bama WAS southern football and is about five years removed from any significant relevance. Come back and boast when you can beat Auburn for the first time in the life of some 7-year olds.

July 17, 2008 12:34 PM | Link to this

PTC Dawg —- now by me saying that VT isnt afraid to schedule OOC games, I am NOT saying that we wouldnt mind recruiting from the state of georgia a little more heavily =P

VT plays solid football. It killed me 2 years ago when we completely BLEW the bowl game against UGA. I had some good friends calling me at half time telling me “hey man, great game, I love VT so no biggy”. Was very tough to call them back after the game and admit defeat. With that said, I would love another shot at UGA— just not this year.

Currently VT has NO returning wide receivers, NO returning RBs and a decimated defense. While I still think we can contend for a top 10% bowl, I don’t wanna face UGA— was a pretty fair matchup last time we faced in terms of where both of our teams were at— would like to face y’all under the same circumstances again, not while one is rebuilding and the other is clearly not. Any other SEC can bring it— talk trash about the ACC all you want, but NO ONE takes VT lightly on game day.

By GA Hokie

July 17, 2008 12:39 PM | Link to this

Not saying that the ACC is as tough as the SEC BUT— dont you think the big bad SEC team (alabama) could go and schedule a tougher opponent than arguably the worst team in the ACC?

All I hear is SEC fans talking trash about ACC, yet when it comes time to play, one of the “historical perennial powers” of the SEC turns and runs to play DUKE.

At least schedule Boston College, Wake Forest, Clemson, Virginia, Maryland, Florida State, Miami, GT or even NC State for christ sakes

Um.. duke will NOT be a 7/8 win team in 2010…

Currently VT dominates their division in the ACC

Virginia has a great young quarterback, if you havent seen this guy CHECK HIM OUT

GT has a great deal of talent, with a well respected coach in Paul Johnson

Miami has too much talent to stay down— they will continue to romp duke year in and year out

So how are you going to win 7/8 games, when you have an automatic 4 losses EVERY year?

& as much as I love Clemson.. they will be the ACC favorite once they can finally beat VT (look at the stats.. last few meetings they have gotten stomped.. last year AT HOME Clemson was down something like 30-6 in the first 20 min of the game)

The SEC should work a deal with the cable & satellite companies for a package like the NFL Ticket where all of the games will be televised & show with NO BLACKOUTS! If people are willing to pay extra to see the games then why not make it available. It would be even better if there was a way to endure every game played by a SEC teams where all Live on free TV. If not that replayed the same week in there entirety with quality production & not the access channel looking CSS stuff. One would suspect that a SEC network channel would include this. Since we have DirecTV I’m hooping & parrying a SEC network is not done through CSS because it’s not offered not to mention there production values SUCK! I think FOX or ESPN would be better partners for a network. As Tony said before if they do a network it can’t be like the BIG 10 it has to be available in every SEC household from day 1! I’m surprised FOX hasn’t gotten into regular season college football yet if it’ll get more SEC games on TV this would be a great opportunity for both parties. Anyway my I’ve been screaming for years that it’s stupid how many ACC & small conference games are on TV then we have some SEC games on PPV or not on TV at all. That needs to be fixed with these new TV contracts.

Nick Saban averaged 4.8 losses at Michigan State, 3 losses at LSU (including a pair of 8-5s in five years), 8 losses in Miami and lost six last season in Tuscaloosa, including to Louisiana Monroe.

Has anybody else noticed that the Alabama - Clemson game chased Georgia Tech out of Atlanta on August 30th?

They did not want to play their game with Jacksonville State before a smaller crowd (group?) at Grant Field on the same day Alabama plays Clemson in a sold out Georgia Dome.

Tech was origionally scheduled to play on August 30th, but moved their game to Thursday night (August 28th) ALTHOUGH IT WILL NOT BE ON TELEVISION.

It will be webcast though, in case you want to watch a “football game” on your computer. What a bunch of losers.

cv, as a matter of fact, there is nothing going on in the ACC to write about. That conference is suffering a down cylcle right now. Actually, it’s been in a down cycle since expanding to 12 teams. The marquee programs (UM and FSU) are mediocre; Clemson is (as usual) overrated. If it weren’t for VT the ACC would be second tier, and VT is boring to watch.

Hey Hop, when is the last time Bama won something. Admittedly it was 1999. You won it finally in 2002 after a 19 year drought. I guarantee you it won’t be 19 years before we win another SEC title. You have a small run and ya start talking smack as if you’re not still a 1 club member. You know, those teams that have one NC. And all these Georgia idiots talking about parole tide cause 1 player sold cocaine. Nevermind the 7 dawg fans arrested just since January. Richt and his thugs at it again. And the ragging about Bama losing to La-Monroe. That’s almost as embarrassing as losing to Vandy and Kentucky IN THE SAME YEAR! Everyone loses an easy game occasionally like Bama vs La-Monroe or Michigan-App. State but to lose to be 1 year removed from losing to Vandy and Kentucky in the same year. How humiliating! I remember it because I watched Bama play its once a year non-conference patsy (western carolina) on tv here in Atlanta while the UGA-Kentucky game in Lexington was not on any tv anywhere. How smalltime to be in an SEC game where you weren’t even televised even on pay tv. Bama afraid of Va. Tech. I’ve been watching college football for 30 years. Do you UGA imbeciles want to compare out of big time out of conference home and homes that Bama has always played versus big time home and homes that UGA has played? I didn’t think so! Especially since you pansies have never in the history of UGA football traveled outside of the immediate southeast to play a home and home with another bcs conference team. Look it up you pansies! It has never happened ever ever ever!! Meanwhile I’ve watched Bama play home and homes with USC(the real USC), Oklahoma, Nebraska, Penn State, and on and on. You were always small time and you always will be dawg fans!

I grew up watching bama and auburn because I was so close to them living in south ga. You can go fVck yourself aZZhole. I loved those programs as a youngster but now, You, and most auburn fans, have made me just want to kick the sh!t out of you!!. Please tell me something that would bring me back to liking anything about any of your universities. I’m not normally an azzhole, but dam sure can be one.

Zeb, Son you need to kick those Aubbie steroids! We(bama fans)cannot help that we are the most succesful program in SEC history. Aubbies kill me, you think your big time, if you were, you would have played for the NC in 04. You got lucky beating me when I was at LSU that year!!!that little steak you go going on is coming to a streaking halt in Nov. So, keep hating me and my team.IT IS WHAT IT IS. And what it is that we will win this SEC WEST this year.

Trust me, UGA fans, you don’t want BAMA playing in the Georgia Dome anymore than possible. We all know the ATL area is a recruiting hotbed and the last thing the whining UGA fans wants to see is more competition recruiting…ESPECIALLY from Nick Saban.

Now go ahead and post another derogatory statement about BAMA. UGA needs to hate us less and hate UcheaT and UF more seems to me. Richt is too nice a guy to coach at UGA.

Zeb,

WHO mentioned Bear Bryant?! Seems that the only people that talk about him are the jealous fans from other schools. Bama_12 Titles was just stating facts and all of a sudden you want to start running your mouth about Bear Bryant. Don’t act like a South Ga. Hick, Zeb. I will open this can b/c I can.

I agree; clemson and bama are just trying to recruit where the real football is played. We’ve got better athletes top to bottom; than alabama and s.carolina. I do think it’s bull$* that they are letting them play in the great state of Georgia, without playing UGA or GT. I hope they dont schedule the game @ the dome next year for bama and vt.

First of all idiots, I was actually giving your program some props by mentioning that I thought the Bear was one of the best head coaches of the millineum. You morons are just too stupid to understand that. So keep thinking that Saban is your savior. We’ll see you guys Sept 27. If you win, I’ll still be right here ready to eat crow. If we win, you’ll probably be back in your trailer park in tuskerlooser never to show your face again.

Actually, my trailer’s here in Marietta. Also, being from S.Ga. you probably think crow is filet mignon. Roll Tide, coksuker..

C’Mon guys, ALABAMA is the best collegiate football program in the nation. They have 12 National Championships so lets show them some respect…… I mean when we win half those many we can talk cr*p.

Until then, we need to stop talking about winning National Championships before the season and actually go out there and do it. THE DAWGS ARE ALL TALK!!!!! DO SOMETHING BIG MOUTHS!!!!

Bama would be better off playing Bud Foster defense with another qb. Have you seen John Parker? What possibly can people see in him to make him a Davey O’Brien candidate?

I am sick and tired of all the Georgia and Tech fans on here bashing the University of Alabama.

We brought in Nick Saban to begin a transformation back to greatness, and it is working. Who had the #1 recruiting class last year? Who are the RECRUITING NATIONAL CHAMPIONS?

ALABAMA!!!

I pray that Georgia wins the SEC and the BCS Championship this year. They deserve it after all these years. After this year and next, Georgia is done. A.J. Green, DeAngelo Tyson, Richard Samuel will be good; but they won’t be able to topple Saban’s stockpile.

When Alabama’s freshman class matures, they will be National Champions. Julio Jones, Jarrel Harris, Mark Barron, Tyler Love, and the list goes on.

AS FOR THE DUKE RUMORS, they are false. I am a writer for Alabama’s football program, and that is not what is happening.

If Bama was to play in the kick-off in 2010, MARK MY WORD IT WILL BE AGAINST MIAMI. Miami and Bama are on the rise, and in 2010 that will be a sick match-up. We might even see a rematch in the NC in 2012.

Roll Tide Roll, and Bulldogs for the Crown

Some of you VaTech guys needs to check your schedules a bit closer. VaTech is still scheduled to play Ohio State & Wisconsin in the 2014 through 2017 seasons.
