Richt will help UGA manage great expectations

Destin, Fla.-The SEC Spring meetings come to an end this afternoon when the league’s presidents make their final decisions and the revenue checks are passed around. This is always a happy day in the conference.

The end of the SEC meetings also marks the end of the work year for your humble correspondent. I’ll be going away for a while to catch up on my reading and tackle the growing list of projects Mrs. Barnhart has for me at home. I’m also going to work on my golf game but those of you who have seen me play know that it’s pretty hopeless.

I’ll be back in July before the ACC and SEC preseason meetings. But before I go I want to thank the regular readers of this blog.

I don’t get a chance to read all of the blogs on our website but I don’t think there is a more passionate group of people about their sport than you. Yeah, I get a little discouraged sometimes when the conversation evolves into the written version of a food fight. But that only happens because people care and they want to stick up for their school or their team. I’ve written before that in the South, bragging rights about college football are more important than oil rights in Texas. You folks prove that every day.

You have supported this blog, kept me on my toes, and corrected me when I needed it. And I appreciate it.

I could be wrong, but when I get back I think we’ll be getting ready for one of the most competitive college football seasons we’ve had in a long, long time. And if gets any wilder than the 2007 season, we are all in for quite a ride.

Here are a few parting thoughts to ponder:

**—Georgia will be the favorite in the SEC East but I have to tell you that based on my conversations down here, Florida and Tennessee think they are going to be pretty good. I don’t worry about the Bulldogs being able to handle the hype because of their head coach, who is as level headed as they come. “I’ve told my guys that if being No. 1 (in preseason) motivates you to work hard and live up to that ranking, then it’s a good thing,” Mark Richt told me late this week. “But if it gives you the sense that you are entitled to victories just because of what people are saying about you, then it is a bad thing.”

Richt knows that there are high expectations for Georgia this season. And he also knows he can’t keep that from his players. Managing those expectations and making sure they are not counterproductive to the play on the field is an issue that Georgia will have to manage every single day. Starting today.

**—I still say Auburn is going to be the surprise team in the league and win the SEC West. LSU will be so good up front on both sides of the ball that the quarterback position might not matter but the road schedule for the Tigers is much less friendly this time. If you play Alabama, you want to play them early. By the end of the year the Tide could be pretty good.

**—Clemson will be the favorite in the ACC but the offensive line still concerns me. We’ll know a lot more after the Tigers play Alabama in the Georgia Dome on Aug. 30. Georgia Tech will struggle early but finish well. Florida State will be better but not that much better. I think 2009 will be the come back season for the Seminoles.

**—I think the odds are good that the Southern Cal-Ohio State winner on Sept. 13 will be in the BCS championship game. I also think that the opponent will be either Oklahoma or the SEC champion.

Now, that should be enough to keep the conversation going until I get back. Thanks again for your support. See you in July.

Let the UGA hooey begin. What do you guys have like three or four NCs in the last 25 years?

I don’t want to hear, “well what have you done?”

I’ll tell you what we’ve done. In the last 25 years we don’t think we’ve been FSU of UF like you do, but what we know is that we’ve been *much better than UGA over that time period.*

How does the UGA prayer go this time of year?

Please Lord keep our player’s names out of the police blotter over the summer. AMEN

I’ve been tellin y’all that AU is lo-ad-ed, and this is a very young team

Also, watch out for this recruiting class. They say that Nick Fairley will commit tomorrow to AU with 3 yrs of eligibility left.

Let’s just hope Alabama gets LoMo early this year before they get good.

Have a good summer everyone. I’ve enjoyed it.

Great job Tony. Way to stick your neck out there on that USC/OSU prediction for the title game.(LOL) I’ll go one better though. The winner of that game will play either Georgia or Auburn for the National title.

Tony, You live a rough life! After a week in Destin you need a couple months vacation? Those frozen drinks by the pool must have worn You out! Is the AJC hiring? Just kidding! I appreciate Your daily columns. Now on to football. 1- Richt should be able to keep His team in line. He can always show films of the UT and USC[east] games when heads begin to swell from the hype. 2- Auburn can play defense, if They can actually score points with the “spread Eagle” They will be tough to beat. I agree with You on this one. 3- I think Bama will be stronger than expected this year and They catch Clemson early. If Clemson’s O line hasn’t come toegther a Bama win is not realy an upset. This is a very important game for both teams. Saban and Bowden need to make a statement. The Bama faithful gave Saban a pass last year, now He needs to produce. Bowden has the talent to be on the national stage, but He needs to actually win a big game. 4- The real USC and OSU have relatively easy schedules and the backing of many in the national media. I predict that the winner of this game becomes an automatic # 1.

I’m agree The Dawgs will be ready to play ball this season - not only because Richt has done a great job but also because the players matured at the end of last season.

As far as the SEC being even tougher this season, I’m not so sure about that. Bama - better. Auburn - better. LSU - weaker. UGA - better. SC - weaker. UF - no change. Tenn - weaker. Vandy - weaker. KY - weaker. OM - no change. Arkansas - no change. MSU - no change.

The real problem with expectations is it makes Georgia operate unnaturally. In having to do something to offset expectations in itself offsets the norm. Every golfer down the stretch at the Masters knows Tiger will make that run, but in knowing it, it almost makes it happen in the fact that they choke on their part causing the stretch to happen for Woods. I imagine Tiger depends on it for his part too knowing he hasn’t got to play as good as the average Masters winner since some of it is handed to him. If the Bulldogs can stop worrying about themselves and their mental attitude and just believe the rest of the field will self destruct because they are better on paper they will be better suited for the task ahead. Stop being so nice, strut like the LSUs and Miami’s, if not they will be off balance and unnatural which is what inferior teams like Tech want. We go to Athens and they are acting like this is Sunday School we won’t return the favor.

Auburn in the NC? Let’s start with returning to the SEC champ first. We will be loaded but do have a sophomore QB starting for us. I think Kodi will turn out fine(looked great so far in the spread offense), but he hasn’t played an entire season yet.

If we do make it to the SEC champ, and I think we’ve got a good shot, whoever wins that game should go on for the NC. I hope USC makes it to the NC this year because it gets boring watching the annual SEC beat down of Ohio State every year.

Tony….UGA will be a very good team this year but so will UF, IMO. I still think UGA wins the East but will lose to UF in Jax. UT, with a new OC and an inexperienced QB, will struggle.

AU will not win the west. LSU will win the west. They have a tough schedule but they are still LOADED with talent. Their OC will adjust the game early on to make the O friendly for the new QB. AU has a new OC, a new DC and a new QB (who has yet to be decided. Their RB’s are studs but their WR’s have proven nothing to this point. Alabama will be better but they are still a year away for competing for the SEC.

I think the Dawgs will go 10-2 in the regular season. They will lose to Bama and UF, and beat everyone else. They will go to the SEC championship and play Bama again and win, and then they will win their bowl game to go 12-2 for the season. It’s gonna be a tough schedule for the Dawgs this season, and UGA does better when the expectations are low. It wouldn’t surprise me if the Dawgs won the national championship in ‘09 or ‘10.

I’m a Clemson fan, but I agree with the OL assessment. With all the preseason hype, we’re set up for a huge fall. Too many holes on OL and LB. The folks who say, “Our OL will be better than last year’s by mid-season,” are crazy. Well, maybe they’re right — but by then they will have cost us 2 or 3 games and we’ll be out of the ACC championship hunt.

Roswell Ed: Hint of advise…Don’t live in the PAST. If I’m not mistaken, I think Tony was talking about the 2008 season, not the last 25yrs. For every team that someone may have a winning record against there is another team that has your number. Bottom line? It’s sad when one’s program is in the dumps where some feel as their only hope is to live in the Past. Sad.

It cracks me up how all nay-sayers come on here giving Tony Barnhart a hard time about kissing up to the Dawgs and not giving any love to the likes of South Carolina. (SOS, are you kidding me??!!) The funny thing is teams like Auburn (QB, DC, OC), UF (Defense and unproven RB), UT (QB), GT (where do I begin??!!), etc. all have question marks and are hating on the Dawgs but don’t state ANY true weaknesses on our Off and Def sides of the ball. Yeah, Auburn has a good running back in the likes of Brad Lester but is he as good as Knowshon Moreno? We had some close games last year that we should have lost (see Vandy) but truthfully, that team played over its heads and is that much better for eeking out the close victories, Blackout, Bobo as our Off Coordinator, …. Our Offensive Line was as green as they come but held up EXTRMELY well. They now have an entire season under their belts. Stafford is now a Junior and although he doesn’t have the glitzy stats of Tebow (ALL HAIL TEBOW!), Staff has a better supporting cast. Mo Mass is looking to have better stats for his Senior season and the supporting cast of receivers will be better. We lost a couple players on the Defensive Line but are just fine, loaded for bear at linebacker and experienced in the Secondary. WHERE ARE THE WEAKNESSES???!!!! I await all serious responses with great anticipation…

It seems as if it were only yesterday that we heard the South Cakalaky faithful crowing about the additon of the Ole Ball Sack to the athletic department as the head football coach…..And now, after only a few seasons of more mediocrity on the football field, they are beginning to realize that not even HE could win here with any consistency. Well, choke my chicken…(no pun intended). I’ve got bad news for you chicken chokers. (Or is it chokin chickens?) Not even Lombardi could win on a regular basis down there. South Carolina is fast becomming the coach’s graveyard of college football. Now, quit your pi$$ing and moaning about not getting any love from Barnhart. Win more. Be in contention for the SEC. Marietta_Dawg:

You’re right…Let’s crown Georgia national champs now…………….

But just for the sake of argument, let’s ponder:

  • Can Matt Stafford improve his TD/INT and completion ratios above 55%?
  • Will he have receivers who can get open and catch the ball?
  • Will Moreno stay healthy? Is Caleb the real deal if he is called upon?
  • Will some of the new and unproven defensive line players be up to the task?
  • What kind of impact will losing Velasco have? What kind of impact will losing Clint Boling for the first two games (maybe more)have?
  • Will Georgia be a middle of the road SEC offense again this year (#6 last year)?
  • Who is going to kick field goals? Is there another Coutu in the wings?
  • Which Georgia team will show up? The one that went 4-2 to start the season and should have lost to Vandy or the team that finished the season 6-0?
  • And, how will the team manage expectations and every team gunning for them? Is Georgia THAT good?

I don’t think so…

As it relates to SC-GA…

Richt is 5-2 against SC…No disputing that…But it hasn’t exactly been easy…His offenses have not reached the endzone in three games. In two of the other three games, GA reached the endzone only once. If it weren’t SC, he likely would be 2-5…

I know we SC fans must count on a COMPLETE COLLAPSE by GA in order for us to win but I think GA will come to play this year…I’m sure your Free Shoes U and University of Miami disciple will pull out some new form of thuggery (ala the unsportsmanlike celebrations at Vandy and FLA last year, Moreno in everybody’s face after every play) to muster the troops…

GO GOATS!!! SIC ‘EM!

Now….When UGA won a title in 1980 it is STILL 1 more than AU has in the same time frame. 13-0 season be damned…..you still got only a conference title for that bit of work.

I often admire your posts, not only for your insight, but also because you make me laugh my a$$ off when you get under other people’s skin.

However, I wouldn’t crow too loudly about your boys on the plains just yet…..especially when UGA stuck that whipping stick straight up your a*******es for the last 2 years running.

I must go now….I think I just saw another large black man with dreadlocks wearing a red and black football uniform flatten another one of your QBs…..He will soon be at the Athens Police Department to file formal assualt charges. Or was it an interception that large man forced him into throwing? No, it wasn’t either….that noise I heard was Moreno scoring another TD on the vaunted Auburn “D”.

To answer a couple of bloggers questions: PK will be UGA’s biggest question in Summer camp, but should be answered by one of the top rated kickers coming in, Blair Walsh. I think he’s more Billy Bennett than Brandon Coutu. In response to another blogger: Your 6 words can’t match the combination of talent, passion and enthusiasm of UGA’s 2 words, Knowshon Moreno. Have a great summer!

I am really excited about this season. My beloved Dawgs look good on paper, so hopefully that will translate. I must say, however, that I am a little disappointed that we keep making fun of Tim Tebow. I hate UF with all that is in me, but respect a guy that would give up his spring break to do mission work. Give him a break already. Also, do UGA fans go to AU, UF, and LSU blogs to make insults? I didn’t know if that was just limited to their fans coming to a UGA blog. I don’t really care about other schools, so I only read UGA’s, but if that’s the thing that you are into…

SOS, I change my mind. Let’s use your bullet points but directed at South Carolina:

Can Matt Stafford improve his TD/INT and completion ratios above 55%? Will he have receivers who can get open and catch the ball?

Will Garcia complete his AA program before the season begins?

Will Moreno stay healthy? Is Caleb the real deal if he is called upon? Will some of the new and unproven defensive line players be up to the task?

Does South Carolina even have a running back who could be UGA’s third stinger which by the way is doing quite well this Spring. South Carolina’s D is pretty sound so I’ll lay off for now except for the fact that you got DISSED by our former D-Coordinator and now have a new D Coordinator unless he wakes up and leaves for a better program (Vandy).

What kind of impact will losing Velasco have? What kind of impact will losing Clint Boling for the first two games (maybe more)have? Will Georgia be a middle of the road SEC offense again this year (#6 last year)?

Will South Carolina be able to plug up that anemic O-Line?

Who is going to kick field goals? Is there another Coutu in the wings?

Will Succop change his last name? Thank goodness his last name doesn’t reflect his kicking abilities but ironically describes the history of South Carolina football.

Which Georgia team will show up? The one that went 4-2 to start the season and should have lost to Vandy or the team that finished the season 6-0?

Will the same South Carolina team who choked the last few games of the season and could not even get into a bowl game show up?

And, how will the team manage expectations and every team gunning for them? Is Georgia THAT good?

Does South Carolina even have expectations? I’m sorry, you expect to lose to Clemson every single season and embarrass the SEC. At least UGA can take care of business against Tech, Clemson, F$U, etc.

So Roswell Ed attended the Barn! I do not think I would have admitted that. It is like saying he got a second high school diploma. Does that Aubarn booster still run the athletic department?

As for South Carolina; how could anybody in their right mind keep a straight face and yell “Go Cocks” in public? Especially when their team went kinda flacid in 6 games last year.

Tony, enjoy the vacation because you have earned it. The impending season is shaping up to be a thriller, and we all look forward to your take once it gets going. Whoever wins the SEC will win the NC Game. Look at the past two years. Getting through the SEC is the tough part, but facing teams from a weak conference (Little 11) for the title, aka Ohio St. We will see you Dawgs in Jax. Be aware of the teams in our conference who are keeping their mouths shut. You Dawgs are giving everyone bulletin board motivation for their locker rooms, but I must admit that you make it fun. Go GATORS and Go SEC! MAY THE BEST TEAM WIN.

Great post Mayretta Dawg-

Everybody loves to show the world UGA’s weaknesses but they really don’t talk much about their own. Just the fact that they have to put a list of 10 or more “what-ifs” together to show what could go wrong shows just how deep and strong my Dawgs will be this year. I lived in SC for a few years and I have never seen so many cocks crow about so little achievement. That is a program that has accomplished very little in its history. I do love their fan’s dedication to the team though. I’d like to see a little more of their enthusiasm in Athens (not that we need it to win, we don’t). TO all the UGA naysayers out there - Georgia is in an incredibly enviable position this year. We are stoked, our schedule is tough but that just gives us a big stage.

SOS, 1- Stafford threw 19 tds and 9 ints last, which is pretty good, better than Matt Ryan’s 31tds and 19 ints. As to Stafford’s 55% completion rate, You answered part of that question with your second question, if UGA’s recievers get open and hang on to the ball, Matt’s % rate will improve. He has done a lot of work on His footwork and delivery in the off season. If He improves half as much as He did in His first off season He will be a damn good QB. 2- What new and untried defensive linemen? Howard was the only loss on the D line and UGA rotates DES frequently, plus They have two All SEC caliber DTS returning, and all Their starting LBS, so I am not sure Who is “new”. You did bring up a good point about the O line, but UGA has more experenced linemen on both sides of the ball than They did last year. 3 - Moreno is a tough Kid, He didn’t miss any games last year so hopefully He can stay healthy. We will know about King pretty quickly, as They will split carries. 4- There is a highly rated kicker from Fla coming in this summer, and two walk ons did well this spring. They will have to battle it out in fall practice, but kicking should be ok. 5- Which UGA will show up? I don’t have a crystal ball, but IMO it will be the one from the second half of last year, except bigger and stronger. When UGA met USC last year They had a sophmore QB, a rookie OC, and a re-built D line, LB corps, and secondary. Not to mention three starting O linemen and a RB in Their first SEC game. To be honest I, along with many others, thought They would go 9-3 at best last year, and possiblt lose a secong tier bowl game. I never saw this coming.

I would like to see the Dawgs win every game except the one in Jax against UF and their gme with UT. It may serve the UGA Nation well to look at what was said about Southern Cal prior to the 2005-06-07 Seasons. They were suppose to be invincible, and they certainly had a lot of talent, but they tripped up. How about the Buckeyes of ‘06 who were called “unbeatable”. They were a joke against UF. The games will be won on the field by a group of dedicated young men. I do not care if the gamechickens ever beat UGA, but they did last year and it cost the Dawgs at the end of the day. Although I am a Gator, I believe UGA would have beat LSU for the SEC Title had they qualified for the title game. They would also have crushed OSU in the same fashion as UF and LSU. That is all in the past. This is a new chapter of SEC Wars. The team with the most passion and a little luck will win the SEC, and it may not even be the most talented team. Go Gators! It is almost time to break out the tail gate gear!

I would just like to say that I am tired of all of the bogus comments about Georgia, Mark Richt and the lack of moral integrity of the football program in Athens. Every day I look at the football headlines on numerous sites, and every day I see myriad other schools with troubles. I think that it’s an easy (though unfounded) mark at a time when many recognize that there is great talent at UGA but aren’t man enough to acknowledge it publicly. Also, SOS, I live in South Carolina, and it’s no wonder to me that there are so many more Clemson fans here than there are fans of the chickens. Come to think of it…I see at least an equal number of Georgia fans, and I’m sure that they can’t all be transplants like me…

Will the Dawgs celebrate at midfield again this year for beating Vandy? Maybe this year the Pups can at least win their division before their ignorant president starts campaigning for a college playoff. No way UGA could’ve held Jacob Hester’s or Matt Flynn’s jock strap last season.

halcombo-

My best instinct is to leave your comments alone because they border on incoherent. What does that mean? “They better have all this talent they are supposed to have”??? What would make you think that Moreno is at all fragile? He was extremely solid last season. As far as the O line goes - if you didn’t burn them last year you’re not going to. They are young and deep. Most of the 2nd string got playing time last year and those that didn’t will have time this year. Some of these posts question UGA’s loss to SC last year. It was a VERY YOUNG TEAM, early in the season. That probably won’t happen again. Even if it does LSU showed that you can overcome losses in the SEC now that the pollsters apparently have come to recognize that the SEC and other conferences are not exactly equivalent. They took into account the talent and competition of the LSU losses last year and put them in the NC anyway. That is now precedent and may become the trend (let’s hope we don’t need their mercy to get to BCS Championship but if we need it I’ll take it). First things first though, I personally am not going to mention the NC and UGA in the same sentence again until they win the SEC. IF that happens they will have earned it.

I am not a Bee, I am a DAWG, but I am curious as to what on Earth the nerds have to ‘bark about.’ I haven’t been jumping up and down saying that Georgia is going to win it all, and the season is a bear, for sure. OK…It’s all becoming clear now…My guess is that Mayretta_Dawg is one of those non-UGA grads with dial-up modem access and a dip cup beside the computer…Are you by any chance related to SECCoachinDallas(GA)?…

Please tell me how I have in any way been thumping my chest about SC football??? Please re-read my posts…

And just in case reading comprehension was the part of the SAT exam that kept you out of UGA, I will break it down for you…

I didn’t predict a victory by SC this fall, nor did I say we would win the SEC East…What I did say was that I appreciated Barnhart’s snub because your goats will be thinking once again that all they have to do is show up…TELL ME HOW THIS IS DESERVING OF YOUR CHILDISH VITRIOL?????

And as far as addressing the blog topic here, you still haven’t done it…Instead you have cited SC’s deficiencies which I’m sure if I took the time to read them I would agree 100 percent…

You see, this is what I don’t understand about you goat fans…You think SC fans don’t know that we lack the football pedigree of GA??? Your lack of recognition of this fact serves to further illustrate that the goats and their fans don’t take the SC game seriously and almost every year it’s a near death experience or a loss like last year…

BTW, I noticed you tried to misdirect with the “moral victories” thing instead of addressing why Richt’s offenses have problems scoring touchdowns against SC’s defenses…I am dying to know if you have a legitimate answer, because there is no reason with the talent you have that UGA should average just one offensive TD a game in 6 of the 7 games Richt has coached against SC…I mean, for God’s sake…You have the same record against SC this decade as you do against Tennessee…If I were a goat fan, I would be asking myself how that happens instead of living in denial and talking about “moral victories”….

Kudos to Shane#1 for actually attempting an intelligent dialogue on this blog topic…Although I would encourage the intrepid Shane to visit www.secsports.com where he will find less glowing (albeit more accurate) passing numbers for Matt Stafford…Also, the departed defensive linemen I was referring to were Chester Adams and Marcus Howard.

And to Laurie…You’re over your head little missy…Putting aside your very scientific straw polls, my guess is your level of disdain for Gamecock fans increased sometime around September of last year…Cheer up though, the GA-SC is only 3 more months away…You can make it!!! If not, I’m sure Gamecock fans will be happy to see you pavk up and return to God’s Country (a.k.a. Georgia)…

And for “College Football Fan,” a question…How could anybody with a straight face in public bark like a dog??? It’s all about perspective, my friend…

SOS, wow. Little Missy? You rock. Really. I didn’t dislike SC fans any more or less after September of last year. I was at the game with my fellow alum and glad to be home. I had a great time even in the face of a heartbreaking loss. I don’t live or die based on the score of one football game. I love my Dawgs, I love being in Athens for the games, and I enjoy college football as a whole. I also find it to be a shame that there are so many people who are so pathetic and lacking that the best that they can do is trash complete and total strangers on a blog, knowing that they will never have to show their faces to the people that they ridicule. My comment was based on what I see around me everyday in the Charleston area. Yes, it seems that there are more Clemson fans here, based on attire and adornments on autos and the like. There are a tremendous number of Georgia fans here, too. Not surprising, since it’s next door. One of my employees graduated from Carolina and even made the point that they (Cocks) are grossly outnumbered. It was a casual observation, much like the one that you are a desperate, sad soul. Oh, and your observation about numbers of victories over Carolina and Tennessee is certainly correct: five each this decade. I guess it’s better to win five out of eight against a team that to lose five at the end of a single season, though, so I’ll take that.

I it has been great Tony…thanks for helping us pass the spring…its time to settle into the summer, get caught up on some movies and then get ready for September! I will join you in few parting shots…

PAC-1 - USC will find a way against Ohio State, but I think they will stumble somewhere…not sure where yet, but I just don’t think they will run the table.

Big 11 - The Buckeyes are the team to beat again…but Illinois may be formidable.

Big 8+4 - The Sooners will win the league, but the Horns, Red Raiders, Cowboys, or Aggies will hang one loss on them. The Horns will also play their way into the BCS, but the Red Raiders could steal their spot.

Big Easy - West Virginia will be 12-0 if they can take care of Auburn in Morgantown.

ACC - IF Clemson (and I know the key word for Clemson is always IF) takes care of ‘Bama in an impressive fashion, they should be favored in every subsequent game…including the title game in Tampa. The Hokies should find themselves in Tampa as well, based largely on the fact that the Coastal division is going to be very weak this year. The trip to Lincoln should be their only regular season loss.

SEC - I mentioned this before…Georgia is going to be terrific and they would win an 8-Team playoff, but they will not go undefeated…the SEC is just too deep. Georgia will finish with two losses but win the SEC ala LSU in 2007. Florida will also play its way into the BCmeS.

Mountain West - If BYU takes care of Washington (away) and UCLA (home), look for them to run the table and head to the Fiesta Bowl.

WAC - Boise State and Fresno State both have very difficult road tests, so don’t expect the WAC to crash the BCmeS party this year.

Conference USA - Keep an eye on East Carolina…if they can knock off my Hokies in Charlotte on 8/30 and then upset West Virginia in Greenville the following week, they could win out and be on their way to the Orange or Sugar Bowl. They travel extrememly well…

Sun Belt / MAC - no program is ready yet to dance on the big stage yet, but there are definately signs of improvement…

I’ll stand by my prediction of a Clemson-West Virginia title game (which will shatter attendance records)for now and the other BCmeS games should look like this…

Rose - Ohio State (11-1) vs. USC (11-1)(rematch)

Fiesta - BYU (12-0) vs. Oklahoma (12-1)

Sugar - Georgia (11-2) vs. Texas (10-2)

Orange - Virginia Tech (11-2) vs. Florida (10-2)

Have a great summer, everyone…

SOS, I usually do a pretty good job on stats, though I am not a “stats guy” ala …….BuLLDog. I am too lazy to do that much research, and, basically, I don’t care. Frankly, since Stafford is more of a game manager than Tebow, Who must shoulder a lot of the burden for UF to be successful, I don’t consider stats that impoprtant in Stafford’s case. I think My completion % would be pretty much right, I am sure of the TD-INT ratio. Though You are free to cite a source and correct Me. Chester Adams was a OT and not a D lineman, though like ‘Nando, He will be missed. So I was correct that Howard is the only starter not returning to the D line, and like You, I have some doubts about the O line. Frankly, I will not be comfortable with the O line for a couple of years, as I would prefer some seniors up there.

Proud Dog;

USC will find a way past OSU only to get their usuall SEC beat down?!?? Ask Auburn (x2) & Arkansas (x2) about the beat down they put on SC. Oh yeah YOUR BAD; Coach Carroll & the Trojans are 4-0 in said games! Last time I checked those two schools were in the SEC so go back to the record books and try again! Southern Cal will wipe the field with the SECond placers! Of course y’all have ‘till Jan ‘09 to come up with the lamea$$ excuses as to why you can’t beat Pete! Mug shots in the AJC will not give you a pass when this prediction comes to pass, so get ready for the pain and suffering that Ray & Cush Co will be delivering in Miami!!! Fight On!!!!

A Georgia fan calling an LSU fan obnoxious?????? Have you not read the posts from above….maybe some of Mayretta_dawg’s post????? I thought Chapel Hill fans here in Charlotte were bad until I read these posts.

Seriously, what Tony says is true, it is great to see the passion of the SEC even if some take it a little too far. From my perspective, even though I graduated from another school, I love going to USC games, I grew up in SC and have always liked USC. And I do think that USC may be overlooked a little. Are they ready to contend for a place in Atlanta, not yet. But, do I think they are not as bad as some make them out to be….not even close.

This team is returning 10 starters on defense. The defense failed late in 2007 primarily because of injuries, the leading tackler was lost at LSU and by the time of the Clemson game, the defense started only half of the guys who started earlier in the season. Most of the starting defensive backfield for the Clemson game were backups down to the third team due to injuries. Should you find a way to win even with injuries, sure but, if you lose 5 or 6 starters, it will have an impact.

And even with that, they were a fumble recovery away from beating UT and a first down away from beating Clemson.

As for the offense, Brian Maddux will be a good running back. McKinley is a great receiver and LeCorn is coming along. The offensive line returns most of the starters but, obviously the biggest hole on offense is who will be throwing the ball. If that gets worked out, it should not be a bad year.

Laurie, I am not sure what you are trying to say about some of the Carolina tee shirts and “it is no wonder there are many more Clemson fans” in Charleston. To think that USC is the only school with a couple of stupid tee shirts is naive. But, if that makes your life better to trash another school and the fans who support the school then good luck with life.

Shane#1, not only are you #1, YOU ARE THE MAN!!!

Finally, a GA fan who is willing to engage in some intelligent debate!!!

I don’t know that I agree necessarily with the idea that Stafford is a “game manager,” given this is the college ranks…Nevertheless, I think it’s up to Matt and his receivers to make this upcoming year really special for GA…You know the running game will be there as long as Moreno is healthy. Regarding the OL, I too think you will be fine but you will have to be cautiously optimistic with them at the beginning of the season. It’s hard to find problems with the defense (even though I tried by making Chester Adams a DL)…In all fairness, this should be GA’s year but as always I like the fact SC plays you early on and in Columbia…

I don’t think Stafford will have his way with our secondary, which means for us the key will be stopping the run…and we all know how that went last year. SC’s run defense will be improved, but how much?

For the SC offense, it’s going to all be about the OL and the QB. We have the skill players at RB and WR and the TEs should be a difference makers this year. But our OL, improved as it may be, must prove that it can open holes against the GA defensive front. If GA’s DEs are able to pin their ears back it could be a long day for our QB carousel…I like Beecher at QB though because of his ability to run. If he can open up the offense a little bit, this should be one heck of a game. It would be nice to see one of these GA-SC games where both teams score some points…Each team has scored more than 20 points just once this decade…It’s time for a 24-21 or 26-24 final score…Succop with the game-winning kick, of course.

The tee comment was made in response to one from Tech-Hater about hats/shirts he/she had seen. Don’t even act like Gamecocks liked Spurrier before he got to Columbia. I’m not naive; I explained that here, on the Battery in particular, there are more Clemson and Georgia fans than there are Carolina fans. I have very good friends from most schools in the SEC in addition to tOSU, Penn State, Michigan, Southern Cal and Texas. We have great times watching the games together, and we DON’T attack one another. You need to get over the fact that there is a school that you clearly dislike who is getting some national attention. When Carolina does something other than beat Georgia, maybe the Cocks will get the attention that they so clearly deserve. At this point, I am bored. By the way…my housekeeper graduated from Carolina, and she is very happily employed by the little missy, over her head, naive girl. It’s great to be A GEORGIA BULLDOG!!!

ESPN REPORTS:

The national championship game comes early this season. According to ESPN the two head-coaches that most define the BCS’s first ten years, the two coaches that have withstood the test of time are USC’s Pete Carroll and Ohio State’s Jim Tressell (in that order). Carroll’s Trojans have gone 70-8 in the past six years, winning 5 of 6 consecutive BCS bids (including going 2 for 3 on National Championships). Tressell’s Buckeyes have gone 66-11 in the past six years, winning three of five BCS bids (including going 1 for 3 on National Championships). Tressel’s recent image has been tarnished after back to back blowout losses to Florida and LSU in the ‘07 and ‘08 BCS championships.

For Tressel it’s a chance at redemption. For Carroll, it’s further proof that USC has merely reloaded its weapons. The Game of the 2008 Season, USC vs. Ohio State, goes down 9/13/2008 at the Coliseum

Laurie:

I am glad that you get along fine with fans from other schools, that is what makes college football fun. I have good friends who are UGA fans and we all too have fun watching games. In fact, I have more problems with Chapel Hill fans than any UGA fan that I know.

Now, tell me where in my one post amything I said that would give you an idea that I dislike UGA so badly? Since you are bored, I will tell you, I said nothing about UGA, some of the fans’ posts………yes but, nothing about the school or team.

I think they have a great team top to bottom. Moreno is a great RB who will give defenses fits. But, I do think that USC is better than you or others (including Tony who did not rank them in his top 40) think.

I do have a question though, what makes you think that SOB in Charleston is dominated by Clemson & Georgia Alum? And…….who cares? Using your scientific observation mehods, there are more USC fans in the Myers Park, Eastover & SouthPark sections of Charlotte than either Clemson or UGA. What does it mean that there are more USC fans in some of the most expensive neighborhoods in the Carolinas, nothing….what does your battery argument mean….nothing.

Now if you want to talk about football, great, that is why Tony started this conversation. I have said why I think USC is somewhat overlooked. But, if you want to insinuate that a school is beneath you because your “housekeeper” went to Carolina, you need to find something better to do with your time. And, before getting too high on yourself, next time you want to see an NFL game, watch the Texans owned by a billionaire Carolina alum…surely he could afford a house or two on the battery in Charleston.

By Laurie

CLT 1, I wasn’t talking to you in particular. I don’t tremendously dislike Carolina or any other school or their fans (except for that guy from TN who put his head his through my car window my Junior year at Georgia [‘97] and screamed that we were ‘gonna lose’ when it was already a suicide mission on Georgia’s part…end of third quarter, and I had blocked out how ugly it truly was by then…). I wasn’t insinuating anything to you, either. Just the point that she is a happy girl, as I am, and football is supposed to be fun. We have a great working relationship, and we have fun giving each other a little hell here and there. I was only four years old when Georgia won their last NC, and I’m not saying that we’re going to win another one now. It would be great, but doesn’t any fan feel that way? I would rather be ranked lower in the pre-seson (but not tooo low) and hope that we can win while other teams face the adversity that most feel Georgia will. I am not the b*tch that y’all are making me out to be. I am a very lucky girl (to live where I do) who truly loves her alma mater and football team. I have very close friends here who love Carolina (though many of them went to Newberry, COC, and SCAD), but that’s not the point. Let’s look to CTT and CMR among the other coaches who recently went to the Middle East; Siedlecki, Weis and Shannon…even CTT said that now it’s just a game. At the end of the day, none of us play, we just cheer for those we love, and there is no reason to treat other people poorly. Go, Dawgs, Go, SEC, and long live college football.

SOS, Thank You for Your kind words. I do enjoy discussing {and sometimes cussing} football. You may have misunderstood Me when I said Stafford was a “game manager”. I did not mean that He had reached the level of a Manning, or a Montana. What I meant was that He and Tebow had different jobs in different systems. Tebow operates from a spread offense, exclusively from the shotgun. Stafford usually operates from under center. Tebow’s job was to score, either by running or passing the ball. Stafford’s job was to get the ball into the player’s hands that was in the best posistion to make a play. I meant no disrespect to “Dr” Tebow, He is in a different system than UGA’s. In a spread offense the QB is usually limited to just one or two options and His reads are very simple, since one of the purposes of the spread is to get the ball into play quickly. This prevents Ds from adjusting. If a QB goes through too many checks He hinders His offense, so He will have only a couple of reads before the ball is snapped. He will often key on one DE and the FS, sometimes just the FS. When Stafford is under center He has more options and He is given a lot of leeway, for a college QB. This freedom comes with a price, as His reads are much more complicated. Bobo likes to go deep from the power I at times, when the D is crowding the line to stop Moreno. A completion is certainly the objective of such a play, but even an incomplete pass can stretch the defense and possibly give the RB a little room to run. Stafford completes enough of these deep balls to keep a defense honest. UGA also frequently passes to a TE or FB, UF doesn’t have a FB, and rarely uses a TE. Maybe this will explain what I mean by game management. I don’t like to compare Tebow and Stafford, as I have said many times, it is like comparing apples and oranges. Both do Their jobs very well. In a nutshell, UF wants to score quickly and often, UGA wants to control the ball and the clock, and eventually, score. Which is best? It depends, do You like apples or oranges?

You’re very welcome my friend!! I agree it would be great to see a super conference with SEC, GaTech (SEC before going Indy then ACC)SC, Texas & OU(to keep the rivalry in place) That would be something to see for sure! This whole thing hinges on whether or not Martinez and Jancek have their act together at the start of the season. Seems like every year we go through a 2-3 week period when the linebackers are NOWHERE and we end up dropping a game or two. A 2-3 week period when we make the opposing back look like a Heisman candidate - no matter who he is. It will be an awful shame if that once again comes to pass, this time causing us a National Championship. Supposedly, we now have the ‘talent’ at LB. While I agree these guys look the best we’ve had in awhile, it’s the same tune we hear every year out of Athens - then we line up and worked because I guys are in the wrong spot and can’t read and react worth a flip.

Support your school whole-heartedly, but don’t get pleasure when something bad happens to someone from another school.

Finally, I am Tech all the way, but (1) they made a terrible mistake when they dropped out of the SEC (by far the best football conference), and (2) anybody who honestly thinks that UGA has no quality education programs is either very foolish or blind to the facts. Time to make an actual observation about college football…..

In reference to West Virginia…..the schedule does favor them. Look at their conference….the only tough games they will have this season are against Cincy and USF. However, I think the Mountaineers are just about at the end of their cycle….

The admin at WVU went out and hired a coach whose previous record was 8-25…..and he was pressured to resign because he used a racial slur……Yes, they played brilliantly against Oklahoma, but Rich Rod’s O-Coordinator was calling the plays, and he is now at Michigan……Bill Stewart was the ONLY coach that Rich Rod DIDN’T offer a Michigan position to, which should tell you what he thought about Stewart’s coaching abilities.

On the flip side, WVU has a lot of returning talent that Rich Rod brought in, so they may be OK until these guys graduate or go pro. Once this happens, though, WVU will be circling the drain. It’s OK, though, because WVU is only able to crow about how good they are once every 10 years or so. Since the fan base is used to this, they won’t be so p** when they DO do down the toilet because, well, they expect it.

Now, is it just me, or is anyone else here tired of reading about the West Vagina Mountainqueers and the soap opera that their team has turned into since Rich Rod left? (Sorry, I just couldn’t resist that one last jab) If I were a WVU fan, I don’t think I would be all that proud…..especially when your program was pretty much illegitimate until you won a couple of bowl games over teams that underestimated you. You can be sure Mark Richt won’t make that same mistake again should UGA and WVU meet on the field once more…….Oh, JEEZ! Sorry, there I go again, hurting other fans’ feelings. Good Lord, I need some sensitivity training.

When you go to Chapel Hill for basketball it is like watching a group of nuts drink Kool-Aid. They are in a trance, zombies walking the streets. The Bulldawgs have a little of that on game day in Athens, but Carolina does it much more soberly, like they would wake up tomorrow and do the exact same thing. When you go to a Bama game it is half the illiterate world looking for doughnuts, Carolina actually has real students, good looking coeds wandering around looking for a fight with any Dookie in their path. The phenomena of our time is seeing a hard a* banker dressed in orange like a KK clansman on game day in Knoxville, strolling around the stadium parking lot like it was a hamburger joint on Friday night. Class? A game show couldn’t make asses out of most of these people like a college sporting event. It is what makes the game so great, take the class thing to Augusta, give me the cow bell of Miss. State or the fish thrown at the Notre Dame team by the Tech student body, the drunk in Athens relieving himself on the sidewalk. When you see real American it make you wonder who these stiffs are running for president or who these call ins are on talk radio that judge others.

You are right we did step on our d_cks in the Stanford game no way around that one. Yes UGA played against more teams that wound up with winning records than SC did; but if you’ve read any of my posts you’ll ALWAYS see where I DO give the SEC credit for being the top conference no doubt. But IF YOUR thought process is that a winning team (SC) can’t be recognized as such because the other teams in their conference aren’t winning then why do Texas & OU get so much love from the polls? BIG12/PAC 10 pretty even in the overall. So by your logic those two schools don’t count either? In other words You consider Vandy to be more rellevant than USC or Texas because Vandy’s in the SEC and the others aren’t.(?????) Hey I’m all for being supportive of your team/conf. but that dog don’t hunt son! So, when USC won back to back NC’s and played for the 3-peat since they and Texas (‘06) aren’t in the SEC who then did you “claim” to be the NC during that three year run? Vandy!?!? Quit hating and starting enjoying! SEC is the best conference top to bottom without a doubt, USC Trojans best program without a doubt. Not our fault that we’re not in the same conf with y’all.

Hey Tommy Bow Wow den… At least UGA stuck it to VA Tech a couple years back in The Chik fiL a Bowl. Seems like The Hookies have been kickin the Kitty Cats butts the last two years.

Not to mention how you guys have struggled with the terrible Yellow Jackets over the last few years. I mean 2 losses in the last 3 years to Tech. How embarrassing!!!!!!!!

SC Rules!!- I am pretty sure I didn’t say anything about The SEC being the only conference deserving of a NC. All I did was state the obvious about your team. I am sure that Kansas, Missouri, OU, and Texas would disagree that The Pac-10 and Big 12 were equal last year. Please read my post again. I was talking about LAST year….not years back like you brought up. Also Vandy would have a winning record every year if they played in the Pac-10.

Is anyone else bothered by the AJC’s headline “Latest News Ends Sad Story” about Michael Hutts’ death. The story should not end until Georgia Tech issues a statement detailing how they intend to prevent this thing from ever happening again to a Tech athlete.

It is like they are quickly walking away from it and do not want to look back. I would think they would take proactive steps to educate all GT athletes, begin a process of holding regular drug testing and initiate penalties for athletes that fail those test. It appears Tech is doing absolutely nothing on an ONGOING BASIS to prevent this type of occurance from happening again.

I am shocked that the alumni and administration have not insisted that the GTAA begin a process of getting a handle on it considering their latest hire, Joe Hamilton was reported to have had the remains of a joint in his car. Tech needs to take some proactive action and not ignor it like some parent in denial.”

Sorry to take up space here, but the AJC gave no other blog to bring this out for discussion (at Tech’s request?)

Really?

My bad, it sure seemed as if that was what you were saying. As for the Big 12 not feeling that the PAC 10 is equal, USC, ASU, CAL, Oregon, OSU & f******* were all in Bowls. Only ASU & f******* lost their bowl games, ASU to Texas. I’m sure if Vandy was in the PAC 10 they would enjoy some additional success but not as much as you think. The PAC 10 isn’t as weak as you seem to think, they must have some decent athletes besides at SC because the conference gets its due on draft day. Same for the Big 12, SEC and the ACC. Yeah the point about the .500 records, well we beat on each other same as y’all. The thing that gets to me is the attitude that ONLY the high and mighty SEC is “worthy” of any recognition and to hell with everyone else. OK, that’s your right to be that IGNORANT! I guess that means that we should cancel all 12 of SC’s NC’s because we don’t play in the SEC so we didn’t “really” win anything.

Mr. Tony Barnhart;

Sir I have enjoyed your columns and your book, enjoy the vacation and look forward to your reporting on the ‘08 season!!

SEC fan;

I realize I’m not the most popular person in this blog but I do respect the SEC and look forward to the coming season and really look forward to the NC game (SC vs SEC) to finally settle all this! Then there won’t be any excuses of “well SC only won ‘cause they didn’t play SEC” If SEC wins against SC then straight up y’all are the better team that day/season no arguments, no excuses that so and so was sick, hurt or whatever. I would “hope” that SEC fan will return the favor and give SC their due if they win the NC; ESPECIALLY if it’s against SEC team!

shane#1;

Coach Carroll channeled in and has to report that the PAC 10 powers won’t let SC leave to join the SEC; something about lost TV & Bowl revenues. So I guess for the forseeable future we’ll just have to hope the BCS “gods” see fit to match SC vs SEC whenever possible.

Really?

I do understand the SEC’s point of power and how good y’all are the ‘03 season was a great point; LSU beating the hell out of OU (even though score was close game was not!) I believe a much better match up would have been SC vs LSU. That would have been a great game or even more so the next year when SC rolled OU in Miami 55-17; OU had no business in that game and SEC “should” have had the chance to match up with SC. (In my previous post the * team was UCLA) Later.

really? & shane#1;

Since you both make some of the better aruguments/points for your respective teams & the SEC; I want to ask you this: Do you think that teams with .500 records at the end of the season deserve a bowl bid? I remember as a kid waking up on New Years day morning excited to watch the BIG 4 Bowls (Cotton, Rose, Orange & Sugar) yes there were some “smaller” bowls in the preceeding days after x-mas (Gator, Blue bonnett, Liberty & Sun) but my point is that you had to WIN to get into a bowl, conference champions were rewarded for the fact that they WON. Yes; there are a few more conf’s today than back in the 70’s but the fact of the matter is the bowl system is rewarding mediocrity for the sake of the all mighty $ !!!! So, I ask you do you agree with the system in place today? I realize that the SEC has like 7 or 8 bowl bids each year and the Big 12 5 or 6 same with PAC 10. There isn’t any incentive to “win” just make sure you’re .500 so we can fill the bowl slots. UUUGGGGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

savannah dawg ; I like your enthusiasm but 10 years!?!? Lets get through the ‘08 season, even with the depth we have at Southern Cal I don’t want to get too far ahead of ourselves. We have 7 tailbacks on the roster one coming in and two solid 4 star committs for ‘09 class so far. We have a young O-line as do you, our d-line will be young but a lot of them plyed significant minutes last year, you guys have some talented LB’s but I think its pretty safe to say that NO program will have the LB’ing talent that we will. That’s not just me saying this, try ESPN, Rivals etc… all have the Trojans LB core as #1 in the country. You have the edge at QB and certainly a stud of a TB in your corner no doubt, will he get the help he neeeds from the O-line? That is our concern, how quickly can our O-line gel? The DAWGS will be strong that’s for sure but NC’s????? Not this time!

Hey, I’m gonna be in the ATL June 7-13th, for the AWWA ACE ‘08 show at the convention center. I wanted to go check out GaTech in the afternoon one day any advice as i keep readign about it being a bad part of town. Kinda like the scene with SC, great school, great town (L.A.) just in a bad part of it. How was the beach? Sounded like the “view” was nice! Atlantic or Gulf??? Later.

Sc Rules, You should have no problems. Atlanta is not as bad as some think and if You have the street smarts to survive in LA You will stay out of trouble in Atl. If you have all afternoon free You may want to see the Ga Aquarium or the New World of Coke too. Both are close to the Tech campus. Try to make it to Mary Mac’s on Ponce de Leon for lunch and get some real Southern cooking, no tourist crap here, and everybody that is anybody in Ga eats there. You will find the prices very reasonable, despite all the Celeb’s photos on the walls. Try clicking on the Access Atlanta heading at the top of this page every day or two for info on restaurants, clubs, concerts, and other events that may intrest You. Atlanta is a cosmopolitan city with restaurants and clubs for every taste and in every price range, You can really have a large time there. If Your intrest run to the finer things the High Museum of Art in Midtown and the Atlanta History Center in Buckhead are well worth Your time. As to the Beach, I, like most people in this area, go to the Gulf Coast. It is closer {about a three hour drive} and the beaches and the water are much prettier than the Atlantic Coast.

I just read this on the AOL blog. Notre Dame AD Kevin White has taken the AD job at Duke.White’s major moves at ND were the hiring and firing of Ty Willingham and the hiring of Charlie Weis. He was also one the decision makers with the BCS. How is that for a resume? Poor Coach Cutliff can’t win for losing. Please Coach, send Phat Phil a box of doughnuts and a note swearing Your love and loyalty for Him and Rocky Top. Swallow Your pride and beg! It is probably too late to get your old job back, but maybe You can be a posistion coach or something. Try to save Your career while You have a chance. Other than that your only hope is that this Bozo really p** off coach K! I guess some of the Eggheads at Duke used reverse logic, thinking that since White turned ND into Duke He can turn Duke into ND. The “Peter Principle” in action!

Thanks for the tip on Mary Mac’s, I’ll give it a try. I hear ya on the staying out of trouble, I’m glad that most of what concerned me was just people spouting of about tech and not a real issue. I had planned on seeing the Aquarium. I am bummed though, I will miss the opportunity to see my beloved Braves while in town, (fan since ‘79 season; Bob Horner on the hot corner) as my partner and I will be setting up our booth for the show Sunday morning and the game/show start at same time. We don’t get in until around 8:00pm Saturday evening and by the time we get luggage/rental car and go to the hotel, well you get my point even the Saturday night game is out. Looking forward to a week in the ATL to see and experience some of it, I’m sure I’ll have a great time! On another note, interesting info on the ND AD leaving for Duke. You’re right Cutcliff must be ready to jump off a bridge. Phat Phil must be laughing his phat arse off right about now. Coach K will stomp that guy into the carpet if he tries screwing with “HIS” program. I’ll drop a line or two while in the ATL to let you know how things are going. Thanks again for the advice. p.s. In October (same weekend as ND game) I’ll be in Chicago for another trade show, I wonder how many NDers I’ll run into at that one! I gather they’ll be less than pleased to see my SC polo’s at the show, if the boss will allow it. He’s an ND grad, he frowns at me during football season. BowWow……So what? You beat Tennessee a few years ago in a bowl. Congratulations. UGA beat UT 5 of the last 8 meetings. I would hardly say that they have owned the decade like they did in the 90s. Hell, even Jim Donnan beat em once, and that was about par for the course….I think he beat all of UGA’s main rivals ( GT, Fla, Tenn, Aub.) about once. That’s whay we had to fire his a$$ and get a REAL coach. You people up there at Clempson will be doing the same thing one of these days when you realize that just because his last name is Bowden, it doesn’t mean he can coach like one.

SC Rules……How did that game against Stanford work out for ya last season? What about that unexpected loss to another Pac-10 cellar-dweller in 07? The point is this….in the SEC any team is capable of beating any other team at any time. On the other hand, in YOUR conference, there is one team, SC, and then there is everyone else, and the likelihood of a big upset happening is akin to a blind hog finding an acorn every once in a while…..or about once every season, which has been the way it is with SC. You have lost one conference game the last 2 years that you shouldn’t have lost. So, before you go there and tell us we lost conference games we shouldn’t have, you should remember that this is the nature of play in the SEC. Teams that are great here find it hard to run the table in conference play. Those that finish with one loss, or in the case of LSU, 2 losses in SEC play are STILL considered “good enough” to play for the NC. And this is, of course, something that CAN’T be said of teams that lose one game in conference play in the big-1, little- 9 Pac-10.

No way in he|| Clemson plays in the BCS title game against WV. No way any ACC team, even an undefeated one, will play in the BCS title game. The pollsters will take a 1-loss SEC team or Pac-10 team over an undefeated ACC team. Get over it — it won’t happen. But then again, an undefeated ACC team is a pipedream. It would take a one-loss (over two seasons) ACC team to be considered for the big show.

Clemson under Bowden is 1-5 against SEC teams other than South Carolina. There’s no reason whatsoever to believe Clemson will somehow beat Bama in Atlanta. No way. Clemson barfs it up right out of the gate and proves the pollsters to be the idiots they are.

They cough up games they should win, they blow it when they get right at No. 10, you never know what team is running down that hill. Clemson is the most bipolar team in the NCAA. They almost lost to South Carolina last season for those of you orange-clad mouthbreathers who have conveniently forgotten.

No way Clemson wins the ACC, no way they win the Atlantic, no way they win their bowl game provided it’s against a quality opponent. You people extended the contract of a weak coach who can’t win any hardware to save his life. You’ve somehow let him put your school over a barrel and now you’re stuck with him.

Clemson going into this season with a top-10 preseason ranking is a tired joke. You’ll never make it to the end as long as you people diefy Bowden and keep him around. Non-BCSer BYU deserves that spot more than Clemson.

WestVa Joel….I think you need to re-read the post I made in reference to West Virginia beating UGA. At no time did I use the term “lucky”. What I said was that UGA underestimated WVU, as did Oklahoma. Coach Richt himself stated that UGA underestimated you after the Bowl loss. However, you DID blow a big lead you had at the half, and then had to resort to a fake punt in the closing moments of the game just to save your own a*******es. Not what I would call a “dominating performance” by the Mountainqueers in the second half. In addition, when sports personalities on talk radio and on ESPN mention the WVU program, they invaribly say…”Well, if it weren’t for the Sugar Bowl win over UGA, WVU would just be another pretty good team with little respect due to conference play.”. Of course, that loss to Pitt on national TV pretty much changed the perception of the WVU program back to where it was before the Sugar Bowl win, huh? Now, in closing I would just like to say this…..Some of my best friends are Mountainqueer fans, but I wouldn’t want my sister to marry one.

SOS…..go to the So. Car. blog if you love reading about classic underachieving football programs. If you’re REAL nice from now on, maybe someone will send you a pic of the SEC trophies that UGA won in 02 and 05…..Lord knows, you’ll never see one in the trophy case up there in South Cackalacky. If all I had to hang my hat on was a win once or twice a decade over UGA, I would keep my pie-hole shut.

Spike….it looks like the only punk on here trolling for other punks is you. Let’s keep the discussion football related, shall we? I see that the one you are calling out must have a bit more class than you, because they have apparently stopped responding to your drivel.

I’m sure there have been worse blog i.d.s than yours but I am hard pressed to think of any…

Let’s see…If SC doesn’t beat FLA in ‘05, UGA only has one SEC championship in 25 years…And two in 25 years is hardly worth writing home about either when you consider UGA has the most well-funded college athletic program in the country…

Seems to me you got it right…This IS a blog about a classic underachieving program (UGA)….

Georgia s….s, I guess You just moved down from Michigan and haven’t had time to get a map. There is a big a* ocean out there that borders Ga and Fla, it is called the Atlantic. When an ocean and land meet They often form a stip of land on the waters edge called a beach. Ga’s most exclusive beach front resort is Sea Island, it is on everybody’s A list. But don’t worry about that, You can’t afford it. You should try to learn a little before calling other people dumb.

SEC Rules!!!!, Do You really think You would have to pay a driver to get lost in Miami! There is a rumor that Cuz will be planted as Our undercover bus driver, and He will be given some of the Gen’s Sippin’ Solvent just to help Him along. Old Matt doesn’t seem to worry about much, I doubt He would care if the Trojans showed up or not. Heii, he doesn’t care whether the sun shows up in the morning or not! Our O line is still too young, but that didn’t seem to hurt them too much in the second half of the season. If We make it to Miami the O line will be fine.

shane, I love to see someone mention one of my favorite places. Hals is definitely a hell of a place to grab to grab a nice fillet with some lump crab meat on top. You can’t beat the atmosphere. The restaurants are probably the thing I miss most about Atlanta. I still make sure to stop in to Hals or New York Prime for a good steak and then head over to the Tavern to see Pat and get some of the best drinks in Atlanta. It was awfully nice of you to offer up Hals to an outsider from the PAC-10, but he seems like a logical fan.

Tenndawg, Hal’s is known as Atlanta’s best kept secret for a reason, locals want it that way. SEC Rules is one of the few reasonable fans on this blog, otherwise I would never have mentioned Hal’s. Man, I miss My other favorite place in Atl, “Fuzzy’s Place”. I miss Fuzzy too, He was a damn good dog from the Erk Russell era, though old Fuzzy was buried so far down on the depth chart that not many people remember Him. Good evening friends, next time I’m in the ATL I’ll give Hal’s a try. If it’s half as good as Mary Mac’s I’m sure it’ll be a great meal! Shane#1 you mentioned making sure we take care of the Shrubs in Sept. well I see where they just lost another QB to transfer, this ones headed to GA Southern. Looks like the rats are jumping ship before the beating commences! I also saw in a thread where the coaches at UVA are playing Conquest at practices to get their team used to hearing it before the opener in Charlotsville. I think last years UVA team would have put up a better fight but the result will be a Trojan victory all the same.

SC Rules, UVa is well coached but a little short on talent. They had a good running back that They had to let go, He thought the sun rose and set in His butt and that He could miss classes and skip off season workouts. You know the type. Any way, You guys should win that one. OB left OSU for Georgia Southern huh? Was He worried about Pryor, or did He just want to play in a better conference? Sorry, I couldn’t help that one!

He surely was looking to play in a better conference! Sometimes you have to leave home to realize what you had all along, I guess he finally wised up to the fact that Shrubville wasn’t quite like back home!! He’ll be better off in the long run. I agree with you on the coaching at UVa, good staff but a little thin this year on talent. Maybe that RB you referenced and the QB formerly of LSU can be roomates in the State Pen some day?! How’s UGA today? Is he resting on a nice bag of ice to beat the heat? Don’t want his drool to dry up over the heat wave. Later Pard.

Let’s see, the baseball players at Fresno State can play for a national championship but Fresno State’s football players cannot because they are not in a BCS conference. What a system! Congratulations ACC, Big East, Big 10, Big XII, PAC 10 and SEC it is clever of you to relegate half your competition as “second class” so that you can maintain your recruiting advantage. Congratulations to the BCS conference commissioners, with the help of the media, you have suckered us all into believing that it has to be this way. Georgia will be 8-4 this season, 9-3 at best. I like the Bulldogs, but we’re caught up in the emotions of the last few games last year. This is the still the same group who was smashed by Tenn, lucky to beat Bama in overtime, and barely got by Vandy. With their tough schedule, I think it’s going to be worse than people expect.

Tommy Bow Wow den, if you think Clemzen has any chance at all against us, you’re an even bigger idiot than I thought. Which is saying a lot since, when I think how you could you get much more stupid, you take it to a whole other level. I would say we’d expose Clemson, but Boston College and Virginia Tech already do that on a yearly basis. It’s amazing how highly you delusional sheep to view your own team.

The only team SEC team we’d have trouble with would be Florida. Our defense would shut down Stafford and Moreno in a minute, but Tebow/Harvin is the biggest threat in the SEC IMO. If our secondary improves we’re unstoppable, period. I’m thinking it’ll be us v. UF in Little Havana.
