Five games that will decide the ACC championship
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Can’t believe it’s Friday. Can’t believe Memorial Day weekend is here and that the SEC Spring Meetings are next week. Where has this year gone?
Yesterday we gave you five games that will decide the SEC championship. Today we’ll do the same for the ACC.
Enjoy your long weekend and please take a moment to remember who we honor with this holiday and why we honor them. And think about the coaches, including Mark Richt (Georgia), Tommy Tuberville (Auburn), Randy Shannon (Miami), Charlie Weis (Notre Dame) and Jack Siedlecki (Yale), who are making their way back from the Middle East where they visited our troops.
Have a great weekend. We’ll see you Tuesday morning from the SEC Meetings in Destin.
1. Clemson at Wake Forest, Oct. 9: This is a dangerous game for Clemson. If the Tigers beat Alabama on Aug. 30 at the Georgia Dome, they have a good chance to be 5-0 when they visit Groves Stadium on a Thursday night. Jim Grobe, whose teams have won 20 games the past two seasons, may be sneaky good again.
2. Virginia Tech at North Carolina, Sept. 20: You folks may not believe me, but this one may be for first place in the Coastal Division. North Carolina was 4-8 last season but the Tar Heels will be the most improved team in the league in the second year under Butch Davis. This will be a very good football game.
3. Clemson at Florida State, Nov. 8: There is no telling what the mood in Tallahassee will be by the time we get to Bowden Bowl X. But I just get the feeling that this game is going to be big in determining who wins the ACC Atlantic. Tommy has won four of the last five meetings against his dad. Nov. 8, by the way, will be Bobby Bowden’s 79th birthday.
4. Virginia Tech at Miami, Nov. 13: I think Miami gets out of the gate slowly because the Hurricanes are so young. But by this game Randy Shannon’s team will start to figure some things out. This will be the second straight week that Virginia Tech plays on a Thursday night.
5. Clemson at Boston College, Nov. 1: The good news for the Tigers is that they get a week off before going to Chestnut Hill. The bad news is that it might be a low-scoring game because of the cold. The Eagles lost QB Matt Ryan, the No. 3 pick in the draft, but they have seven starters from 2007 plus LB Brian Toal back on defense.
HONORABLE MENTION:
Wake Forest at Florida State, Sept. 20: The last time Wake Forest visited Doak Campbell Stadium, the Deacons handed Bobby Bowden his first home shutout (30-0) ever at Florida State.
North Carolina at Miami, Sept. 27: This will be Miami’s first ACC game in its new home at Dolphin Stadium. The Tar Heels will be coming off a difficult game with Virginia Tech, but they just might surprise the Hurricanes.
Virginia Tech at Florida State, Oct. 25: This will be the fourth road game in five weeks for the Hokies, who are at Boston College the Saturday before. There are also trips to North Carolina and Nebraska in that stretch.
Miami at Georgia Tech, Nov. 20: If Paul Johnson is still looking for his first signature win at Georgia Tech, this Thursday night in November seems like a good time to get it.
Maryland at Clemson, Sept. 27: My Maryland friends are telling me that the Terps are going to jump up and surprise some people this season. If Maryland beats California at home on Sept. 13, the Terps will be 4-0 when they go to Death Valley. If the Fridge has a surprise team, we’ll find out here.

Why dont you run an article entitled, “5 Games That Will Decide the WAC Championship,” Tony? The ACC has just about the same chance to win the BCS Title as the WAC does….that is to say…NONE!!

Woohoo, more useless drivel on the ACC! Bar none, this is THE WORST of the 6 BCS conferences. In fact, I’d might even consider the WAC better since they abuse the ACC in bowl games just about every year!

You’ve got to be freaking kidding me.
Clemson at Wake Forest?
That’s says it all.
What about the Oct 4th Ga Tech/Duke game?
There will be more people at The Temple on Peachtree St then there will be at Grant Field.
Is there any name more appropriate then the Flats?
I guess there’s always basketball season.

No ACC team has won a BCS bowl in this century.
I can’t help but remember Terrence Moore’s idiotic diatribe 2 years ago about how the ACC has become stronger than the SEC
Actually I guess I should be embarressed to say I even read that idiot’s article.
Tony, I want you to tell your colleague somebody actually remembers something he wrote. I will leave it to your discretion whther to tell him his premise was breathtakingly stupid

Wow. A decent article on a football related topic, and all the “SEC fans” can do is b$%^ about how bad the ACC sucks. That’s the real problem with the BCS - it took the focus off of good football and focused it on producing a champion. And all of a sudden team fans became conference fans. What? Bama is 8-4? That’s ok, the *SEC is playing for the championship. What? Wake is 9-4? Doesn’t matter, they’re out of title contention.
Pathetic.

This list seams to have shamed ACC fans from commenting.
I mean what the heck can you say about this list?
Tony I agree that Va Tech/UNC game will be huge!!
There is no way to type that with a straight face.
Tony- a list of the top 5 MEAC games next year would be more interesting than this.
Thank god you only had to list the top 5. What ACC game wouldn’t be honorable mention?

An attempt to stop the bleeding here…
First, thanks Tony for the analysis. I assure you there are plenty of readers who appreciate the article but simply chose to stay out of the bloody messy waters of the blog comments.
Second, the ACC conference is fine. I am not sure why readers who claim that they don’t care to follow the ACC read your article and then even commented on it. Weird. Looking at the structure of the ACC, it is set up to be a very successful power conference based on the successful histories of the top 4 to 5 teams. Those teams since the merger have stepped down a bit and do need to step back up. The players in the ACC are top notch - just look at the NFL draft the last few years. I do believe what has been inferior is the coaching in the league. And there have been many changes the last 2 years. Those who do follow the ACC do expect things to improve and get to the level many predicted (not just Mr. Moore). Every conference has experienced down cycles, unfortunately the ACC had its down cycle just when it was poised to elevate itself. That has disappointed many fans and many analysts.

Dick:
Where have you been. We always have had a round up the wagons attitude toward the SEC.
The ACC is like the Big East. It’s a conference thrown together willy nilly.
No one knows what division anyone is in and only 3 of the schools REALLY care about football.
Heck I was born and raised in Atl and I have a 50% chance at best to tell you which one Tech is in.

How about the statement….”That Tech vs Duke game will be HUGE!” That could have been typed with a straight face. That game will likely be huge for Tech. It’s probably the only 1-A team they can legitimately beat this season.

Only one problem….Moore made that statement about the ACC being stronger than the SEC over 2 years ago, not last week. Now, here we are, 2 seasons later, and Tech STILL can’t beat a WAC team in a bowl game. What does THAT say about the state of the supposed “ACC strength” ??

I just wanted the respond to the drivel I’m reading from SEC fans here in Atlanta to this article. Yesterday he did a similar article on the SEC and now their fans are the main ones responding to this article. If our conference is so bad, why do you bother to read and respond? Personally, I think the SEC is low rate character wise. Don’t take my word, there is a DUI article on a Georgia lineman in today’s AJC. And there are a lot of other “incidents” I could list if I cared. The ACC hasn’t done as well as we hoped, but I guarantee you before this decade is over that trend will change. And I WANT to play SEC schools since ya’ll are the BEST; if you want to be the best you have to beat the best. We’ll see.

Yeah, the ACC sucks so bad. If I look at the history books, though, a couple of ACC teams have won a national championship since the last time the little Puppies in Athens last held up a national championship trophy.
Yet again, the Puppies bloated sense of self-importance is shoved down our throats. But hey, THIS is their year!!! Yeah right….

At BEST….a ACC champion is fighting for 3rd place! And this is coming from a ACC fan. (also a BIG SEC fan). Until playoffs are added, the national title game is pretty easy to predict.
Ohio State or USC, against the SEC champs. Everyone else is playing for that meaningless Tshirt they like to give away at the end of the season to make all the teams feel good about themselves.
Random teams that can get in include Texas, Cal and Oklohama. No way any other team….even if they go undefeated…will be in the big game! Sorry West Virginia, Sorry Missouri, but your playing for 3rd at best just like the whole ACC!

Look at all the ACC haters… You are a first rate MORON if you consider Miami, Florida State, and Virginia Tech pushovers. So they had a down year. Programs tend to do that after years of consistent winning.
I don’t care what happened last year, THERE IS NO TEAM IN THE NATION THAT WOULD PLAY MIAMI, FLA STATE, AND VA TECH AND COME OUT WITHOUT A LOSS!
Big Talkers! Everybody’s a real tough talker until they have to actually play one of these teams. Miami has had its way with the SEC and Big 10 for DECADES. Sure they’ve gotten stomped by some good teams recently, but they have returned the favor on many occasions (haven’t they beat the gators like 6 straight times?)
And as far as second tier goes, Boston College, Virginia, and Ga Tech, are just as good (or bad) as the second tiers such as minnesota, south carolina, kentucky, purdue etc.
So just remember, every dog has its day…and even the sun shines on a dogs a* once in a while.. (those are the only dog related quotes I can remember).. So let your team take advantage of the situation while these ACC teams run through the cycle of down time, but fear not, Miami, FL State and Va Tech are not going away, and they are coming to a town near you to embarrass your favorite team.

Although it is not the SEC, the ACC is undoubtedly the second best conference in the country. Should a team from the ACC run the table, we’ll see them in the BCS Championship. When FSU and Miami show up at 4 and 5 you have problems. More So when Clemson/Wake is the headline matchup. Taking nothing away from Clemson, but WF is not a National drawing power. Unfortuantely when you think of Wake you think of years of futility, not a couple of recent decent seasons.
The ACC may have had plenty of individual stars, but the last time I checked it takes a team to when the Title.

Since the ACC/SEC has played in the Peach the ACC owns the overall head to head 8-7

Thanks for the article Tony, can’t wait until August. For you idiots who don’t know the divisions in the ACC, it’s pretty easy.
Coastal:
Virigina - Virginia Tech Duke - UNC Miami - Tech
Wow that was tough.
The SEC is top heavy, always has been, always will be. Just recently Georgia has gone from middle of the pack to the top so they can finally act like they are playing with the big boys Florida, Tennessee, and LSU. Last year Virginia Tech was more in the National Championship picture than Georgia. We all know FSU’s dominance that will never be matched again (13 straight top 5 finishes). SEC have been a good three year run while Miami and FSU have been down, but even some of you idiot SEC fans can see that Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Miami are on the rise again. UNC and Tech are rebuilding. Top to bottom the ACC is probably the second best conference.
By the way all-time bowl winning percentages by conference: Tie for first between ACC and SEC at 52.7 %.

Worthless,
Is Miami up or Down? Also, Georgia has been on the rise since at least 2002. Whats that…like 6 years now? Good job.
Also how many years has Tommy Bowden had the best team in the ACC and not been able to close the deal.
Va Tech an upper tier ACC team manhandled by UGA in the Peach Bowl.
Great post. I must say!
GOOO DAWGS! Champions of the ACC….
What are we going for this year 8,9 straight over Tech?
By Brady
May 23, 2008 2:25 PM | Link to this
Miami is down on its way up, isn’t that what I said?
Georgia has been on the rise since 2002, I agree, but that’s pretty recent history in the grand scheme of things, historically they are middle of the pack SEC.
In regards to Tommy Bowden…that’s why they play the game…again, what’s your point?
Didn’t Georgia have to make a late 4th quarter comeback to beat Virginia Tech? I wouldn’t call that manhandling. Congratulations the #3 team in the SEC beat the #3 team in the ACC.
I believe it’s seven straight over Tech, which hurts, but as long as it doesn’t get to 15 out of the last 17 then I guess it won’t hurt as bad as you feel against Florida.

The Sun Belt Conference may have a more compelling game than Wake v. Clempson. When Wake is involved in the biggest game of the year then your conference really blows.
Paul Johnson may yet win a conference title. I mean how hard could it be? Gailey got ‘em to the Championship game and to hear the Jackets he’s the worst coach in history. Keep in mind though, Tech can win the ACC, but they can’t beat UGA. We may be starting a Notre Dame v. Navy type streak.
UGA 7, Nerds 0
SEVEN.
That’s gotta hurt. What I think is most enjoyable is the keeping you in the game, giving you hope and then…. That’s better than the 51-7 beatdown in ‘02.

What I wonder is why you can’t understand that we are so above you. We’re elitists for good reason.
You folks are just the flotsam and jetsum of life. We don’t like you, we don’t respect you and you continually remind us by your spelling and grammar just how ignorant you are.
I have fired 14 Ugagers in my company…I gave them a good severence….but I told them they were not productive in the company they were just hangers’ on.

This will be hard for the boorish SEC dolts on this blog to understand, but there’s something really special about an underdog school rising up to compete with and beat the big, entitled programs, who have every advantage over that school:
Even if the glory is relatively small and far between, I’ll take the road less traveled, where the joy is pure and my integrity is intact.

Yes I’m an SEC fan and I think the SEC week in and week out is the most exciting conference in the nation, but the arrogance of my brethren is sad. I love football. All football. I would give my eye-teeth to watch a good college football game from any conference right now instead of stupid ole baseball, hockey and the NBA.

If we don’t play the Pac 10 or the Big 11 we get ragged we don’t play a decent out of conference schedule. If we schedule an ACC team, we get ragged. Face it, the Dawgs will get hammered for whomever we play out of conference unless it is Ohio State, Michigan, Texas or Okie homie.
I have no problem with the ACC, I am a SEC fan first but can still enjoy a “good” ACC game. No vitriol here. We will see how good the ACC is when Clemson plays Bammer.

SanDiegoJacket,
Questions for the pee-colored genuis:
Can you count to 7?
Why are you losing to dumb people?
Is being smart better than being a loser?
If you were in a fight would you challenge to person to a math contest and then get your butt kicked?
Do you yet realize that the world is run by liberal arts graduates who hire people like you to do things we don’t want to do, like get my copier working again?
Name the last engineer to be President? (hint: Jimmy Carter) How’d that turn out?
If you were a boxer and you just got knocked-out for the seventh time in a row would you hand your opponent your report card and say “how about this!?”
Do you realize how sad that is? Are you smart enough to know that saying ‘yeah we’re losers but I got an A in organic chemistry’ just says to the world that you are even bigger losers than the game demonstrated?
What do you say to Duke fans when they kick your butts? (Guess: at least we’re too gay to like strippers.)
Use your brain on that nerd…and GFY.

This year, UNC and Georgia Tech SHOULD be a lot better. Boston College will be around 9 to 10 wins. Clemson and V-Tech WILL be good this year (Top 15), Maryland will be… above Average? And Duke, will as always Suck.

1- Jim Grobe has to be one of the country’s best coachs. What He can accomplish with HIs recruits and only 4300 in the student body is amazing! Clemson may be upset here. 2- VT 3- Junior wins again, does Papa have any players left? 4- VT again, Miami isn’t back yet. 5- Clemson should win this one, Junior will blow it!

Tony, sending my thanks from southern Virginia for your article. I have stated before that I think VT and Clemson will meet in Tampa for the title with Clemson being a pretty strong favorite. If my Hokies can wade though trips to Lincoln, Tallahasse, and Miami with only 1-loss, we should be able to slip into the Sugar Bowl as an at-large if we can not topple the Tigers. Ok, just two remarks about the ACC, but I will be brief since its a holiday weekend and I’m anxious to get it started…
1.) The ACC’s performance in the first 10 years of the BCS has been very well publicized in the last few weeks, so I don’t need to go back through the stats. OH, by the way, we have been doing pretty crappy in the Peach Bowl as well, which pits our 2nd place team against the SEC 5th (which is actually the 6th, if the SEC gets an at-large to the BCS)…OUCH! BUT!…the ACC is a better league than it was 10 years ago, when it was FSU and the 8 dwarfs. Think about, FSU and Miami are down right now (and will probably not return to form until 2009 or 2010), but Clemson, Maryland, Wake Forest, and Boston College are all better than they were 10 years ago. North Carolina has a chance to have a very good program, but I doubt it will ever be great…there probably is just not enough room in Chapel Hill for two giants, and besides, history indicates that Butch Davis will probably not be there that long.
2.) Virginia Tech and Clemson have the oppurtunity to become the face of the ACC. Florida State and Miami will get better but there is no reason that VT and Clemson can not finish 1st or 2nd in their divisions EVERY year. Here is where I would rank the 12 ACC programs right now and/or for the near future:
Power Programs…
Good programs…it gets a little muddled in here, you could probably shuffle these rankings up a little.
Bad Programs
The ACC is not the SEC and never will be. However, that does not mean that we can not be better than the PAC-ONE, Big 10+1, Big 8+4, and the Big Easy. We’re working on it…give us a little more time.

Personally, I vote that we dispense with all the nonsense and the charade of the SEC athletes getting a “college education” and just go ahead and set up a minor league system independent of the universities involved. It would be more honest, and then you SEC types wouldn’t have to worry about your sorry a* programs being put on NCAA probation so often !!

“You know, the ACC is probably the 3rd/4th out of the BCS Conferences. We’re definitely better then the p** poor Big East.”
ACC fans are strong on bravado but weak on facts. There is absolutely nothing that supports the argument that the ACC is better than the Big East. Quite the contrary, the ACC split its games with the Big East last year to go 4-4. The year before the Big East had a winning record over the ACC. Moreover, the Big East has won 3 BCS bowls in a row. The ACC hasn’t won a BCS bowl since 1999. One of the Big East’s BCS bowl wins came against the SEC Champion. Not only has the ACC Champion gone a big O-fer against the SEC Champion in BCS bowl games, last year the ACC Champion got absolutely demolished by the SEC Champion during the regular season.
The facts suggest that the ACC is a second rate football conference that cannot compete at the elite BCS level. Its ironic that ACC fans are so pompous about their intellect but have absolutely nothing to back up their arguments.

When we talk about the Peach Bowl and the close record since inception (with a lot of great games over the years), no one seems to bring up the fact that the game pairs the ACC #2 team vs. the SEC 4th or 5th choice.
Seems about right as the series is very even. Goes to show you how these conferences compare over the past 10 or so years.

After Clemson beats the crap out of Alabama, you’ll come up with some excuse…then your top dog will lose to KY, or some other crappy team, and the chorus will be “Good Lord, look at how good Kentucky is!” What a joke.
