College Game Day coming to ATL?

Okay. We’ve got two more weeks before we shut this thing down for our summer break. So, other than the fact that Big Brown is a lot of horse and that the Braves are unbeatable at home, what did we learn over the weekend?

1. College Game Day coming to the ATL? The folks at ESPN like to keep their options open and insist no decision has been made. But I’m hearing that the College Game Day boys are coming to Atlanta on Aug. 30 as part of the run-up to the Clemson-Alabama game at the Georgia Dome. That’s going to be a fun weekend of football around here. Georgia Tech plays Jacksonville State (and Ryan Perrilloux) on Thursday, Aug. 28. There will be plenty of high school football on Friday. Georgia will play Georgia Southern in the afternoon (I’m guessing) on Aug. 30 in Athens with Clemson-Alabama as the nightcap back in Atlanta.

2. Tech’s game with Jax State looks a lot different: About a week ago Georgia Tech’s opener with Jacksonville State looked like a pretty good way for Paul Johnson to make his debut as the head Yellow Jacket. But now Jax State has gone from having no quarterback to lining up behind center with Perrilloux, the MVP of the 2007 SEC championship game. That should sell a few more tickets to the Thursday night event and give new defensive coordinator Dave Wommack something to think about this summer.

3. The Dawgs are buying up ASU season tickets: I talked to Arizona State coach Dennis Erickson the other day. He says his fans are fired up over Georgia’s trip to Tempe on Sept. 20. “Shoot, we like playing teams from the SEC,” said Erickson, who won a pair of national championships at Miami. “I just wish Georgia wasn’t so good.” Erickson told me that a lot of people from Georgia are buying up Arizona State’s season ticket packages, some of which are as cheap as $99. “Something tells me Georgia is going to have a pretty good crowd here,” Erickson said.

4. Joe Pa says he’s fine. But will he catch Bowden? Turns out that Joe Paterno’s trip to the hospital last week was for dehydration, which is not uncommon for folks his age (81). But reading the report on Paterno and meeting with Florida State coach Bobby Bowden down in Amelia Island last week made me wonder: Can the Penn State coach (372 career wins) catch Bowden (373 wins) this season? I say no.

The best possible season I see for Florida State is 8-4 with losses to Virginia Tech, Clemson, Florida and maybe Wake Forest. Ditto for Penn State with losses to Illinois, Wisconsin, and Ohio State and either Michigan or Iowa. If both win their bowl games, Bowden still has a one-game lead. But what if they are TIED going into the 2009 season? Then the beat goes on because neither of these guys is going to back down unless they are forced to do it.

5. A playoff will come, but not because of pressure from fans: Florida State president T.K. Wetherell said last week that financial pressures will be the thing that finally forces Division I-A football to adopt some kind of playoff to determine the national championship. Wetherell, who has long been in favor of a playoff, made the remarks to a group of media attending a forum in Dallas sponsored by the National Football Foundation and the Football Writers Association of America. Wetherell is right in this respect. The thing that ultimately creates change in football is not fan pressure, which is considerable on this issue, but the financial pressures that are only going to get worse in college athletics. The last time there were major financial pressures college football added a 12th regular season game. Four years from now, when the new BCS contract will be negotiated, the powers that be will have to go to the marketplace with a new product in order to command a lot more money. That will be a “Plus One,” where two teams are picked to play for the national championship AFTER the bowls, or a four-team playoff. It is inevitable.

Why would Tech be afraid of one player? Tech’s D will smother the SEC MVP on the way to rolling Jax St. Just a warmup for what happens at the end of the year with the flea infested mutts. Tech will roll Georgia just like they used to all the time. Just wait, the media has the wrong team from the State that will challenge for the National Title this year.

College Football never cared about the fans or players before….why start now??
College football is like a bodybuilding competition….everyone gets on stage and poses…but dosent fight! Thank God im from a area where i have better sports and leagues to choose from.

Welcome to pee wee/ i mean college football….were EVERYONE gets a trophy! I mean you wouldnt dare want the little poor football players to actually feel like their 6-6 season was a FAILURE would you!??

college gameday in atlanta…whoo hooo. can’t wait for another season of herbstriet and company justifying the bcs and the big ten’s football prowess. i don’t know which is more entertaining…bill clinton denying that he messed around with monica lewinsky or herbstriet and corso talking about how ohio state ‘deserves’ to be in the bcs championship.

that show used to be great…now they are full of themselves. Tony, I’ll take you, Brando and Spencer over those knuckleheads any day.

1) Game day will be here. Satan told me so via teleconferencing yesterday.

2) I hear that Perrilloux has already put Reuben Houston on his speed dial.

3) Sounds like ASU uses the same marketing technique as Tech. Don’t forget Dog fans. You’ll get a Coke and hot dog with each of those tickets.

4) They should schedule a game between Penn St and FSU. Call it the Geritol Bowl.

5) I’ll believe it when I see it.

Bravesfan79:

We get it; you like pro football. Fine. Is it better than college football? It depends on how you define “better”. I’ll take a tailgate in Athens, at Auburn, TN, Clemson, SC, or ANYWHERE in the SEC OR ACC over the parking lot of the GA Dome any day. College football does not and never will have a system in place that pleases everyone, but it is a great, entertaining show every year.

You evidently find the pros more entertaining. A lot of us find the college game more entertaining. Go somewhere and yak about the Falcons. I wouldn’t know, but I am guessing you don’t find college football fans make generalized statements denigrating the pro game on a pro blog.

So: 1) enjoy your chosen diversion and 2) get a life.

Look up who has the longest winning streak in the series. Here’s a hint - they don’t wear red. Ugag’s winning latest streak is more due to Gailey than anything Richt has done. There’s a new sherriff in town fleabags, and your D will look awful against his O. Here’s an early prediction: Tech 41 - UGAg 7

Goldtimer, I know you have to go back to the 1950’s to find a decade where Tech won more games in the series than Georgia. I have an idea. Why don’t you look up who leads the all time series. Tech needs to win over 30 in a row to even things up.

By the way, UGA will tie that longest win streak mark of 8 this year. And one more question. What is your excuse for Ray Goff having a winning record against you?

When ESPN’s College Game Day arrives in Atlanta, hopefully inarticulate Charles Barkley is not allowed to appear on the show as he did the last time ESPN broadcast its show from there. Jackson State, with or without Perrilloux, will not beat Georgia Tech. Money may be a reason for an eventual playoff in college football, but we’d be foolish to negate the influence of Mike Slive.

Three things you can bank on for Tech Football ‘08: 1. Will lose to UGA again (8 in a row). 2. Will not make a bowl game. 3. Will be in the bottom third of the NCAA in turnover ratio.

3 will be the main factor in #2.

Did I mention that the only meaningful game that we won in the last decade was against Auburn.

Auburn is one team that I r-e-a-l-l-y look up to. All you have to do is look at how important those 2 wins are to me.

It’s the only thing I allow in my head, because if I stop and think about the state of Tech football I would just breakdown and cry.

Hey fellow Tech fans are you as excited as I am to get to go to Washington DC every other year now as opposed to going to Boise.

I’m looking forward to visiting The Octagon.

It’s the country’s oldest architectural museum.

I also can’t wait to see the Presidential Pet Museum just outside of DC in Lothian, Maryland.

They say that the wing dedicated to Checkers the dog is just awesome!!

Do any of you know how strong the D&D community is in the DC area.

In Boise not so much.

Techmites, c’mon, are you just trying to rile UGA up or are you truly delusional? My guess is the former. Let’s summarize here:

  1. From a mediocre team at best, four or your better players transferred.

  2. From a mediocre recruiting class at best, most decomitted and most of the ones who signed were not considered BCS conference worthy.

  3. Tech is installing a “new” offense that was trashed in all division 1A BCS conferences 20 years ago.

So, I would say, that the odds of Tech beating UGA this year are even less than those of Georgia Southern.

Your assessment of Penn State is a bit off (or let’s just day a bit pessimistic). Of course, you don’t have any of the inside dirt (since you live about 750 miles away from State College, PA), so it wouldn’t be fair to rip you for your opinion. However, take note… Penn State will have absolutely failed this year if they don’t wind up with at least 10 regular season wins. Relative to the rest of the Big Ten, they’re easily that good. A loss at OSU and against one other highly ranked team (most likely at Wisconsin) should give the Lions their only two losses. Penn State should (read: will) sweep their home schedule, which includes Illinois and Michigan. Yes, they have to travel to Iowa, but frankly I’m having a hard time understanding why you think Iowa will be decent this year. Penn State should definitely have enough to beat them.

By 82jacket

May 19, 2008 10:52 AM | Link to this

  1. You should have said only 4 players transferred. That is not a lot for a coaching change. Michigan has had at least double that this offseason. Taylor Bennett wasn’t going to play this year regardless of the system, Colin Peek caught less than 10 passes all last year, and Trey Dunmon was an average offensive lineman. The only real loss was Donley, and he was gone before the coaching change.

  2. We’ll see about that. We also have the ‘07 class which was ranked higher than Georgia’s by most services, they will be sophomores this year.

  3. This system will not be what you think it is.

Georgia hasn’t beaten Tech easily in over 5 years, I don’t know why this year would be any different.

By Old Grad

May 19, 2008 10:54 AM | Link to this

Been almost as long since Tech’s winning streak against Georgia as it has since since Georgia won a National Championship. However you are a “shoo-in” to win it this year. Just like almost every year since MR has been there.

1- Game Day? Who cares! Will Corso put on the Buckeye head again? Will They talk about Clemson and Bama, or spend half the show hyping Ohio St? It should be an intresting game though, which teams will show up? The Bama that stomped UT and took UGA to overtime or the Bama that lost to La Monroe? Will Clemson actually play well against a name opponent? 2- Tech should still win, 1 man can’t beat 22. 3- I hope to see lots of red there. UGA has a reputation for traveling well, that will help at bowl time and when lining up good ooc games. 4- Which of the Dinosaurs will be left at the end? I am glad JoePa is okay and wish Him the best. 5- How can a University President speak the truth and keep His job? Wetherell was the last to speak, and the only speaker not to follow the “company line” about the regular season, protecting the bowls and academics. To paraphrase what he said, the 12th game was added because the programs needed the money. After that money is spent a playoff will be added. Three cheers for the Man that showed that the BCS emperior has no clothes!

For those UGA season ticket holders that haven’t amassed the points to be eligible for ASU game tickets through the school, you can buy ASU season tickets for $99 per ticket. At Tech you can buy an entire season of tickets and have plenty of room to stretch out for only $150 and often that includes snacks and parking. I still can not believe we have not sold out yet. They are only that price because it is a rebuilding year, next year they will be more.

PSU, you’re wasting your breath trying to talk sense to “Mr. College Football” about how good Penn State will be this year. He’s never liked Penn State. He must still be in mourning after the 1983 Sugar Bowl when his heart-throb, Hershel Walker finally ran against a real defense and produced nothing. In fact, I bet Tony voted for Nebraska in 1994. I’m with you. Penn State will win AT LEAST 10 games this year and JoePa will reclaim the record he deserves. And when he does, I’m sure Tony will find some way to downplay the accomplishment.

Who knows what this year will bring. I am willing to bet Georgia doesn’t win the national championship, too obvious, and you have a bullseye on your back. Tech will be better than predicted, Johnson has been too much of an success without the talent. June Jones at SMU should be fun. Clemson beats Alabama right out of the shoot, and ,hold your ears, makes a run for the N.C. after Georgia loses to somebody in the SEC or Arizona State which is a road game.

By gimmicks

Since UGA is out of gimmicks, they will get beat by Tennessee (again), Florida (as usual), and Auburn is due (when the last time in that series somebody won 3 in a row). Alabama will be much improved after these last two recruiting classes, and LSU is never easy in Baton Rouge. So that’s 5 losses already. Maybe Vandy or Kentucky can beat the dogs again, and Tech won’t get beat 8 times in a row. Georgia has never beaten Tech 8 in a row. So my prediction for Georgia 5 - 7.

92 Alabama is one of the few years i can think of that had a real champ.

Anyways i guess perhaps a retarded system is deserving when more than half the players are kinda slow anyways. Lets face it….alot of these dumb cats would barely get into tech school.

As a former college athlete myself it makes me sick to see all these mediocre teams jumping around like fckin monkeys at the end of a meaningless bowl with the fingers raised saying “were #1” when in reality there a 6-6 team that just won a meaningless game. I guess you wouldnt want all the slow football players not to feel “special” tho huh?

Yawn….enough about CF…im ready for a real sport to start back…. GO GT HOOPS!! Shumpert will good, but in 2009 with Shumpert and D Favors, GT will again be a national power!

Anyone that wants to diss my beliefs would be better served contacting your school presidents to possibly make your beloved sport relevant again.

Until then…the big events are the SUPER BOWL, WORLD SERIES, STANLEY CUP, NCAA TOURNEY, WORLD CUP and UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE.

The crap bowl system ranks somewhere among dog shows and beauty pagents.

This $99 thing seems too easy. I live in Maryland and go to one UGA game a year. Usually I have to buy a single-game ticket on eBay and spend close to $100/ticket. So, buying a season’s worth of ASU’s games and possibly selling the other games on eBay (like ASU’s home games with UCLA and/or Oregon) to make some money back seems too easy.

This discussion is bordering on ludicrous (or Jay-Z, or Dr. Dre).

Goldtimer and other Tech fans are just posting completely absurd things to get Georgia fans to respond to them. Anyone can do that. For example, I could say that Georgia will beat Tech 223-0 just to eclipse the Tech scoring record over Cumberland, or that Georgia will beat Tech so bad that PJ will have an epiphany and convert to Dawgism on the field at halftime, or that Tech’s players (and Joe Hamilton)will actually smoke so much pot that they will be numb to any pain and will lose multiple limbs (and other body parts) without even noticing it until the Sunday after the Georgia game, or that Reuben Houston and the erstwhile mentioned Joe Hamilton will marry each other and move to Amsterdam for somewhat obvious reasons, or that Al Ciraldo will come back from the dead and get God to hurl lightning bolts at O-zone for dissing his old friend Larry Munson, or that the Arabs will play nice and give up trying to take over Israel, or that Bin Laden will convert to Scientology, or that the whole world will disintegrate into a crazy, mixed up, dogs-and-cats-living-together exercise in pandemonium. But I won’t. It’s just too crazy.

Everyone knows Richt wouldn’t run up the score like that.

As for the rest, well…

…it’s no more crazy than saying Tech will beat Georgia this season.

wasnt’ jake plummer a sundevil? anyway I digress…

the dawgs are set up for a week one trap in the desert. ASU was not a pushover last year, and is a dangerous early game out of conference.

I can see a scenario where Stafford is a little off in the desert heat, those tough ASU ends get to him a bit. UGA’s suspect kicking game shows some warts, and ASU’s is flawless. A couple of ill-timed penalties (end zone celebration maybe?) and ASU pulls off the upset.

Might not be the right game to spend $1000 to see

You know Tech could beat Georgia this year, especially if they are undefeated at the time. The difference is Johnson plans on beating Georgia, Gailey never cared one way or another. The man’s on a mission, like that sheriff in Sundance Kid, who is that guy? He might not beat them this year but he will be after them again next year and the more Georgia wins the better for Tech because they get fat and happy, and Johnson likes his team miserable which they will be. Johnson was hired for one thing and he truly believes he can do it, we all do.

To all the Techies blogging. Thanks for all the laughs. I really did need it today.

Hey, it’s always nice to dream. You guys might be more competitive in a couple years, but don’t get too delusional this year. That offensive is complex and will take time to get use to. It could be real ugly for your team all year learning this.

I agree with GT Man. Goldtimer was looking to rile up the UGA fans and succeeded. Personally, I’m glad to see that there are still a few Tech fans that are still brave enough to blog here. Goldtimer,

Just for the heck of it, I went to the Tech media guide to see about this great record against UGA you keep referring to. If my calculations are correct (I know I’m a Georgia grad, so take your shots), the series records for your coaches since 1945 are:

Dodd - 12 and 10 55% Carson - 2 and 3 40% Fulcher - 0 and 2 00% Rodgers - 2 and 4 33% Curry - 2 and 5 29% Ross - 2 and 3 40% Lewis - 0 and 3 00% O’Leary - 4 and 3 43% Gailey - 0 and 5 00% Johnson - 0 and 0

Amazing that even with Goff and Donnon, only Dodd (who retired 42 years ago) could manage a winning record against the Dogs. And yes, Tech had an 8 game streak (1949 - 1956), but I’ll take our two 7 game streaks (1991 - 1997 and 2001 - 2007). This is the year we should add to the current streak.

So much for (current history), so go hide till November and we’ll see what happens.

Hey gtg811q: no one gives a damn about Tech’s engineering school. Do 93,000 people show up on North Avenue on a Saturday afternoon or night to see your engineering school?

In fact, I doubt many of tech football players are engineer majors. Most are “management” majors which is like having no major at all.

My personal favorite UGA - tech game was a few years ago when UGA field goal kicker Billy Bennett scored more points than the entire tech team did. I think tech scored 18 points in that game and Bennett scored 19. What a hoot!

I would miss having tech to laugh at every year, but I do wish the dogs would drop them from the schedule and add a SIGNIFICANT interregional opponent from th Big 10 or the Big 8.

Anyw you ramblin gamblin pot smokin clear whisky drinkin and drivin tech ladies, go paint your nerdy little bodies yellow (add some white wings like one GT fairy did) and go out & squeel for your Boise bound band of losers.

Oh didn’t you hear? There is one more Humanitarian (or Humiliation) Bowl with the ACC at the end of the 2008 season before that contract is over. Gues who will be back in Boise with Fresno State or Boise State in December.

Hint: they run the triple option for 1 yard and 3 clouds of dust per play. Oh it is going to be so much fun to watch tech lose this year.

  1. I’m like GenNeyland; the talking heads will fall all over themselves with accolades for Saban and Bama, then Clemson will kick arse. Note to Techies: Game Day might be in town, but they’ll totally ignore the North Ave Trade School.2. Jax State will be better with Perrilloux and that should increase interest from Techies, but probably won’t. 3. UGA obviously has great fans; and the Techies are just clueless when it comes to traveling, much less home game support. 4. I love the competition between Joe Pa and coach Bowden. It’s great for football. 5. Have to agree that any change will not be from fan pressure; the NCAA could care less unless it involves getting money from fans. The NCAA and school presidents are disingenuous in the extreme. They’ve said for years, and still say, that it’s all about the student athlete and academics. Then they add the 12th game. A playoff can’t be done because the student athlete doesn’t have time; takes too much out of their studies, etc ad nauseum. But when it comes to money, they’ll figure out a way to extend the season and take the kids out of the classroom even more. It IS all about the money. Just about every fan that now screams for playoffs will still be arguing and moaning with the outcome every year and find something wrong with it. I would only be for playoffs if they cut the regular season back to ten games. I would say that ‘laughing at dogs’ and ‘goldtimer’ are idiots, but I won’t.

Nothing wrong with buying ASU season tickets to go and support the Dawgs. That is what being a “FAN” is all about. If they don’t want any dog fans in Tempe on Sept. 20th, then cut off sales….I didn’t think so. Hey guy, MONEY is the universal language.

Possibly if the yeller jackets ever get a winning team they will teach this language at Tech. Right now the Techies are just trying to make sure they have enough WHITE FLAGS to last the season.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I heard that CPJ wants his team just to “SIT OUT” this season so that he can get the very complicated triple option offense installed. He says Tech will be ready to field a team in 2009.

Additionally, Tech has petitioned the ACC and the NCAA to let them drop out of Div.lA after the 2009 season. CPJ and RAD say they want to have only “club football” so that their students can more effectively focus on their studies. RAD says: “Remember, we are students first and football players last”.

Boy was he right!

Not a bit of truth to the rumor of Georgia pursuing Wes Durham. The FACT of the MATTER Is. WSB Radio is in pursuit of Wes Durham for when Munson retires.

Tech made a hard run at Munson when Al (toe meets leather)Ciraldo got ready to retire. Obviously Munson said no.

Now the shoe is on the other foot. Munson will hang it up after this season and Durham will be waiting in the wings.

The contract calls for him to broadcast University of Georgia Football and Basketball. He will also have a sports call in show during the off seasons. Above and beyond all that, being the “voice of the Georgia Bulldogs” will get him a boatload of endorsements.

Get ready to say “Toodles” to Mr. Wes Durham because as of 01-01-2009 Wesley will be a DAWG!

Tony have so much respect your writings and promotion of SEC football. I have one question, has Nick Saban got into your wallet too? Hey War “dam” Eagle - I agree with you! At first I thought Mr. College Football was on the take with coach Satan, I mean Saban. Then I gave thought to it. It is a Marquee Matchup. SEC vs. ACC / Bama vs. Clemson. We all know Bamas storied history. Now Clemson, arguably one of the best teams the ACC has to offer.

Clemson may consider the Dome Home field adv. since they have played the Peach Bowl so many times.

I don’t think Tony is slighting anyone, it’s just that it is the beginning of the season and this IS a whale of a game to help start it out.

I personally think the War Eagles and the Dawgs will Tee it Up in the Dome for the SEC Championship. That will be the Game of the Season. It will be a Rematch of the regular season game and an opportunity for vindication for the first loser.

it’s going to be a great year for SEC Football.

Hey Goldtimer,

You sound just like so many other Tech elitists. “Double Wide”? Where the he!! do you get off demeaning the type of structure someone calls home? Being a Tech Man I guess you have a fashionable mid-town penthouse.

Whether I live in a double wide or not is none of your business, not that you would give a damn if I did. My point is that you think you’re so high and mighty that saying something about a double wide is demeaning to a Georgia fan. You never stop to consider that some people have no other choice but a double wide.

Many people, some of which are fans of both Ga. and Tech, didn’t get the opportunity to go to college, graduate and get a good job. They look forward to Saturdays in the fall to cheer on their favorite school.

You and your attitude scoff at the 50 something plumber, sitting in his recliner, having a beer and cheering for Georgia or Tech, and living in a double wide.

We have some good natured fun on this blog, but don’t demean a persons home and the way he lives. A mans home is his castle. The fact is, at some point in your life, you will probably need the services of someone that lives in a doublewide.

Continue being a D!ck. I wouldn’t p!ss on your a* if you were on fire.
