Is Saban “getting around” recruiting rules?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
It’s another “Free-Wheeling Friday” and inquiring minds want to know:
1. Why the fuss over Saban’s use of technology? So the NCAA passes a rule that head coaches can’t visit high school recruits during the May evaluation period. But phone calls and any kind of electronic communication are acceptable. So Nick Saban, the Alabama head coach, sets up video conferencing, which is clearly within the rules. Then come the charges that Saban is “getting around” the rule. No, no, no. That is using technology to work within the rules. The rule was put into place because of the inability to enforce the “bump rule” where head coaches could see but not talk to recruits. Fine. But coaches are being held responsible for the character of the people they recruit. If technology allows them to make a better character evaluation of a potential recruit, then why not use it? Guys like Saban and Urban Meyer are great recruiters because they stay ahead of the curve and embrace the technology. So don’t be surprised if the NCAA eventually bans video conferencing with recruits.
2. Will Ryan Perrilloux last the entire season at Jacksonville State? The former LSU quarterback and the MVP of the 2007 SEC championship game is down to his last strike. Dismissed by Tigers coach Les Miles, Perrilloux has signed with Jacksonville (Ala.) State, a Division I-AA team, where he will be eligible immediately and will certainly be the starter this fall.
Perrilloux does have this going for him. Jacksonville State is coached by a veteran in Jack Crowe, who has worked at Clemson and Auburn and has been the head coach at Arkansas. He has worked with SEC caliber athletes. Perrilloux has to know that if he puts up good numbers at the I-AA level, somebody will use a draft choice on him. If he blows this chance, he’ll be too toxic to touch.
It would be a shame to see so much talent go to waste. We can only wish the young man good luck.
3. Is Southern Cal in trouble? I’ve been reading that the allegations that Southern Cal basketball star O.J. Mayo had his hand out (surprise, surprise) combined with the allegations involving USC running back Reggie Bush will surely put the Trojans in NCAA jail. Not so fast, my friend. Understand that these issues deal with agents, not boosters. The NCAA has clear rules that schools are charged with the responsibility of controlling their boosters. The agent thing is much more difficult to pin down. For the school to be punished in these cases, the NCAA has to prove that the school KNEW about it and did nothing. That is tough standard to prove.
4. Is anyone else sick of the Rich Rodriguez story? Every day there seems to be something new. Rodriguez was pressured to sign his contract with West Virginia by the governor. Rodriguez wanted his wife to write stuff for his website. West Virginia didn’t keep their promises to Rich Rod. The governor of West Virginia might be brought in for a deposition. Enough already. Will somebody at Michigan step up and write a check to West Virginia and end this thing? From what I’m reading there is plenty of blame to go around on both sides. West Virginia says Rodriguez owes them $4 million for bolting to Michigan. Split the difference, write West Virginia check for $2 million, and let’s be done with this foolishness. Michigan cannot want this to go to trial.
5. Memphis to the Big East? How would that work? There have been reports this week that Memphis could be a candidate to leave Conference-USA and join the Big East. Given the success of the Memphis basketball program that might make sense but here is the reality. The Big East has its hands full now managing a 16-team basketball league and an eight-team football league. Unless a basketball-only school, like Notre Dame, leaves there is no room. Besides, the next school that the Big East will probably consider as a football member is Central Florida, which was in the running when the league added South Florida several years ago.

1) It’s called “Saban Envy”.
2) Yawn
3) USC is dirtier than any SEC school in recruiting. They are like the Miami of the west.
4) Rich Rod or UM should pay the $4M and be done with it. They knew he had the buyout when he signed the contract. Do you think UM would let someone out of their buyout?
5) Yawn no. 2

Southern Cal won’t get in trouble because they are Southern Cal, it has nothing to do with agents v boosters. Two sports, two spotlighted athletes…both taking money from agents while in school. If this was any other school, the NCAA would already be setting up a satellite office on campus. But not USC. They are protected.

1- Saban is ahead of the curve on this one. He is not breaking any rules. I am more concerned with His oversigning. Why not limit schools to signing 27, since only 25 scholarships can be given. That way a school can be covered if a couple of guys don’t qualify, but programs will be forced to take more care with the players they recruit. I do not like the scattergun approach to recruiting. 2- Maybe Ryan has had a lesson in humility that will make Him settle down and go to work. I hope that will be the case, but somehow I doubt it. I am sure Miles had several talks with the young man explaining what was expected of Him, so far he hasn’t listened. 3- I applied to USC for a compliance officer posistion and was told I was over qualified, so I had keep My old job, as a WWE referee. USC makes too much money to be in trouble, so the NCAA will put San Jose State on probation. 4- I read that UWVA had six lawyers show up the other day when to give a deposistion. Six lawyers! Settle for Pete’s sake. It would be cheaper to let RichRod keep the money than to pay six lawyers! 5- I hear that there may be a split coming in the Big East between the football schools and the basketball schools. If that is the case it may not be a bad idea for Memphis to join the Big E now.

If it’s within the rules now, it probably won’t be in the next couple of years.
Total waste of talent. This guy is a knuckelhead.
They may be in trouble, but I am sure it will be white-washed and swept under the rug.
Yes, Yes, YES!! Could somebody PLEASE make the Rich Rod crap go away? This whole thing has got to be an embarrassment to both schools.
Does Memphis St. still play football? I thought they only had a basketball team there.

It’s not fussing, it’s whining. Working within the rules is not breaking them.
“No” is my guess. Given his track record, a better question would be whether Perrilloux will last long enough to be the qb for JSU’s season opener. I’m a big believer in second chances; on rare occasions, even a third chance; this kid used his up a while ago. I’ll save my good luck wishes for some one who deserves them.
No, Southern Cal has always been treated with kid gloves. At best, they might get the dreaded letter of reprimand put into their file. Oh, the horror…
Yes. But Tony, you have to realize this is the new milennium. Compromise, negotiation, tolerance, middle ground—-those are all dirty words nowadays. Get with it, my friend. Everything is black and white, with absolutely no shades of gray; it’s my way or the highway; insert any other “principled” cliche you wish to here.
It wouldn’t. Another midnight hotel lounge rumor that will die in two days. Reporters really shouldn’t drink so much—-bad for the career and the liver.

One. Saban=snake oil salesman.
Give him credit. He works it harder than a one legged cat trying to bury a +urd on a frozen pond.
Two. This guy reminds me of MV7. Is it 4:20 yet?
Three. Who sez they don’t have a professional football team in LA?
Four. Rodriguez is a fool if he or his agent don’t understand what a buyout clause is. He seems very Sabanish/Patrinoish doesn’t he? Very slippery.
Wasn’t he Bammers 1st choice a few years ago? They ended up with his twin.
Thank goodness that Jetgate was a failure.
Rod is the exact opposite of what Michigan fans think of as a Mich man. I just don’t see it lasting long.
Five. You’d have better luck naming teams that don’t play bball in the Big East.
East Carolina seems like a good fit.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Tony I wrote your column for you yesterday on Wed and I’ll do it for you again for next week.
There has not been enough press on the coaches that will tour the Middle East next week.
Weis, Richt, Shannon, Tuberville and the Yale coach will tour military bases all next week. They’ll meet troops and do things like coach flag football games that are played between our fine men and women in the Armed Forces.
Tuberville said it best:
“I’m looking forward to the opportunity to spend time with the troops in the Middle East. They have made so many sacrifices to help protect our country and this is a small way that I, along with the other coaches on the tour, can say ‘thank you.’ I know we’ll get to visit with a lot of college football fans and hope to see several Auburn Tigers along the way.”
God bless our country, our troops and these men.
Would anyone like to hear me rant on p-w@ste libs? It is free wheelin’ Fri.

I disagree that coaches like Saban, Myer and Richt are concerned with the character of players. Their only concern is talent. This article makes Perriloux sound like a real criminal. His offenses were minor when compared to dangerous thugs like Ellerbe and Thurman. It appears that Florida may be gaining on Georgia in quantity and nature of criminal behavior. Using a dead person’s credit card is a new one.

Shane #1, Saban oversigned yes but he did so with a plan. A couple of the players enrolled in school early (like the GT transfer) and counted against last year’s scholarships which Bama had extra because of medical hardships. One or two are coming in on the Bryant scholarship which is awarded to children of past Alabama athletes. There’s another one or two that will greyshirts. And another one or two that are likely academic casualties.
So, it isn’t really a shotgun approach.
And no, Saban isn’t skirting the rules but he will have an inordinate amount of attention to everything he does while at Alabama. He’s in the ultimate fishbowl now. At a recent Alumni/booster event, Saban commented that while at LSU he never got reported for any recruiting violations. He was turned in for 20 last spring alone. Someone reported Alabama simply because a former Alabama QB was at the press conference when a QB recruit recently announced he was verbally committing to Alabama.

Mike the Tiger, What article did You read? I just re-read Tony’s blog and no where did he say anything about criminal activity. The only person that used the words criminal and thug was You. One post called Ryan a knucklehead. What would You call Him? I think most of what He did was minor, but Miles suspended Him several times and He would not get with the program. This was a kid that had the starting qb slot on the defending BCS championship team and a fast track to NFL millions and would not listen to His coach. Miles even stated that He had set some standards for Perriloux to meet to be back on the team and had explained what He expected out of Ryan. The kid knew what He had to do and didn’t do it. That is a knucklehead! To call Ellerbe a dangerous thug is unfair, He got in trouble a couple of years ago, was suspended, and has stayed out of trouble since. The difference in Him and Perrilloux is that when His coach layed down the law, Ellerbe LISTENED!

Saban reminds me of a kid in the back seat of a car on the family trip with his finger right in his sister face saying “I’m not touching you”. He is an arrogant little prick that know he is following the letter of the rule but not the rules intent. The only way to deal with children like that is to smack them and hopefully the NCAA will do it. Some coaches care about the kids, some just think of this as a business. The players learn the difference eventually. It will catch up with him and the University of Alabama will once again pay the price of putty winning above all else.
God bless Mark Richt who is a kind caring man. Coach’s this special are hard to find. Talented, yet humble. The players are lucky to have a guy like him and you can hear it when they talk about him. He is more than a coach to many of them. He runs the team like a family, not a business. Win or loose it has become a model program for the SEC. Wouldn’t trade him for anybody, and I hope we all have many more happy years together. Good luck Bama, you have a long bumpy road ahead.

Rich Rodriguez - “a deal is a deal”. No one held a gun to his head when he signed the contract. If he pays anything less than what he owes you send the signal that delaying and whining will save you $2 million. I hope UWV’s attorneys are doing pro bono work and I hope Coach Rodriguez’ attorneys are putting him through the wringer at a minimum of $400 an hour.
Roswell Ed - great callout on the Coaches visiting our troops. The troops get paid nothing and have to do extrememly dirty work. I look forward to reading several in-depth stories in the AJC about Coach Richt and the UGA football players who I believe are returning today from their mission trip in Honduras, I believe.

Scott, I don’t like the idea of promising a kid a scholarship that might not be there. I know that Saban was not the only coach to oversign and that some programs went even further over the limit. So why not limit signings to 27, if You are going to limit scholarships to 25? That way a kid will know if he needs to sign elsewhere. As for Saban being turned in 20 times, You have to remember that the “Fat Man” does not like Bama. Several years ago the “Fat Man” and a certain Gator ex-qb turned Bama in to the NCAA. Saban is a very aggressive recruiter, and the “Fat Man” is watching!

Shane, that is essentially what Saban did. Remember what I said in my other post, Bama is looking at maybe only two or three academic casualties from their signing class. That puts them at 27.
The other 5 are taken up by players enrolling early and taking up a scholarship that was freed up from last year, Bryant scholarships, and greyshirts.
That’s a far sight different than say Auburn last year when they signed ~30 and only 18 or so showed up for summer camp because of academics.

Every time UA has gotten a new coach, their fans proclaim they’re headed to the top of the SEC for good. Yet somehow, it just hasn’t panned out.

Hey Tony. Rodriquez of Michigan needs to pay the $4 million he owes the school, then this will disappear. Not until then. If there was a scenario that WVU would have had to fire him, then HE collects $4 million. That’s why he agreed to and signed the contract. Memphis and the Big East. Simple solution. 1) dump Notre Dame. They don’t want to join for football? Screw ‘em. 2) drop the three basketball only schools who have contributed the least revenue and attendance over the last five years. 3) add Memphis, Central Florida, Southern Miss and East Carolina—all fertile markets for recruiting. The only additions the Big East will ever get to make will be current non-BCS conference schools so let’s get on with it. Also, having 12 football schools qualifies the league for a conference championship game, and millions in TV revenue.

Hey Nick, Joe Hamilton went to Tech during the 7 years that Tech used 11 academically ineligible players to cheat their way to some wins. That’s what Tech’s football program went on NCAA probation for, remember?
Maybe Joe was one of the 11 players, because as far as I know their names were not released. Joe should have gone through Tech’s “total person program.” Then again, Reuban Houston should have too.
Oh well, Tech will be taking it up the ol’ wazoo this coming season for sure. The triple option may work in Div 1AA and with a Navy schedule, but year in and year out, the ACC and the SEC teams you play will stuff it like a drum and have the CB’s to cover any wideout man on man, or in Tech’s case man on girly man.
You hired a coach that will make Teck folks think Bill Lewis wasn’t really that bad. Conference USA may be a stretch for you if Memphis moves to the Big East.

Bamafan, Auburn is Auburn, basically same every year, win 9-11 games, 10th-15th in recruiting nation wide, no academic or jail problems, compete with all SEC teams beating Fl, 2006 NC winner, losing to LSU last play of game,2007 NC winner, UGA kicked our butt(black jersey`s))and play a competitive schedule each year. Last year playing LSU, Ark., Florida and UGA on road with 2-2 record, not bad for a team with a 10th rank SEC QB and several key injuries. Last three, unfortunately UGA has lost key games not to advance which personally has the best talent in the SEC.. Florida, UGA and Auburn will be best SEC teams this year, but hate to say this, if Bama recruits do job they are predicted on paper, Bama could make a move..

The Hokies were in the Big East when I was in Blacksburg (94-98), so obviously I have a lot of great memories associated with Big East football. In my view, the Big East really missed their chance for major expansion in 2004…the setting and context was right then. It seems like everytime the Big East has the chance to move forward as a football conference, the basketball forces begin to move and the evolution of the Big East is stunted. Here are just a few examples for those of you who are not as familiar with the history of the conference:
1.) 1982 - Penn State was denied admission to the Big East…Big East officials were not interested in a “football school” that added nothing to the league’s basketball profile. What this means is that Penn State will NEVER even consider membership in the Big East again. That’s a shame because Penn State would actually have more traditional and historical rivals in the Big East (not to mention that the Nittany Lions and Notre Dame would make the Big East a power conference over-night.
2.)1991 - The Metro Conference made a final decision to not become a football conference, but the Big East did not aggressively pursue the football playing schools from the Metro to join it’s new football league. If the Big East had wanted to, it could have begun a full Big East Football league schedule in 1993 with the following member schools:
Florida State Virginia Tech Louisville Memphis Southern Mississippi Tulane West Virginia Rutgers Pittsburgh Syracuse Boston College Miami
I know…WOW
3.)1995 - The Big East denied Virginia Tech full admission to the league a desicion that was not reversed until 2000 (or 2001). Hokie fans were resentful of this and when the ACC oppurtunity was presented in 2003, the desicion was a no-brainer for VT. Had the Big East extended full membership to VT in 1991, the Hokies may not have been so quick to go to court when the ACC initially asked for Syracuse, BC, and Miami in 2003. If VT had stayed in the Big East, it probably would have been a positive in expanding to 10 teams while college football was ripe for change,
4.) 2004 - Big East was not aggressive enough. It simply attempted to replace VT, Miami, and BC…whereas it should have been looking to expand. The Big East should have expanded to 12 Teams and created the following (2) divisions:
Big East South
Louisville Memphis West Virginia South Florida East Carolina Central Florida
Big East North
Rutgers Pittsburgh Temple (football substitute for ND) Connecticut Syracuse Cinncinatti
This was have been so EASY for the Big East to do…so why didn’t it do it?…basketball…the Big East had (5) non-football full-sport members in Seton Hall, St.John’s, Providence, Georgetown, and Villanova that had been a part of the league since the late 1970s…well guess what?…when the Big East started talking about expansion, these basketball schools wanted expansion to add to the league’s basketball profile also…SOOO, instead of adding (6) football schools, it added (3) football schools and (2) basketball schools (DePaul and Marquette), expanding the footprint of the league from New England to the west side of Lake Michigan. In my view, this was a tremendous miscalculation and I don’t think the Big East will ever again have the oppurtunity that is had in 2003.

It is always amazing to me to read the comments of the Georgia fans on the blogs. They could take a blog about Mother Teresa and turn it into “Tech sux” or “Auburn sux”.
It is no wonder why there is no team that is loved/hated more than UGA. The sad fact is the actual grads are intelligient, rreasonable people who can carry on a conversation without all of the BS that comes with the sidewalk trailer trash that loves to associate themselves with the UGA football team.
What speaks volumes is their lack of support/interest for the other programs like men’s basketball.

“3. That is tough standard to prove.”
Not so slow, my friend. You are ignoring the fact that the Ornstein Group is both agency AND booster. Bush was a paid employee interning there while at USC and with USC’s full approval. The added Lake allegations merely demonstrate the pattern that the Mayo situation further establishes: the USC athletic department closes it eyes and pleads ignorance. The University of Serial Cheaters richly deserves severe sanctions.

Coaches are paid to win and most will walk a thin gray line to win. Fans like to talk a big, but if your team is consistently losing 3-4 ballgames a year, i seriously doubt that you will be patting the coach on the back saying, “its okay to lose, so long as our players have high GPA’s, graduate, and are model citizens.” Be honest with yourself for once.

First of all:
Nobody said anything about CMR being a Saint other than the people that hate UGA. And, for you folks doing so, do a little research on the man before running your mouths. This guy has done an awful lot for orphans and the community. Plus, he is not afriad to speak about his faith in God. I’m not a UGA fan, but CMR is a class act.
You folks don’t even know CMR, but you want to attack his character. I wish my daughter can meet and marry a gentleman like CMR a God fearing, caring person. To him, I wish much success on and off the field.

Its the UGA fans that portray Richt as a saint. As if their program is without guilt or sin.
Spurrier and his wife Jerri adopted a child. Bobby Bowden regularly speaks about his Christian faith and has also done much for his commmunity. Billy Donovan funded and started in a Catholic Private School in Gainesville. These are just a few of the things that OTHER coaches have done and they are regularly attacked.
Just because one is a christian and has “done an awful lot for orphans” does not mean he does not walk/cross the line at times in an effort to win! UGA is far beyond reproach … in fact, i believe they are still on probation?

1)its a general statement about fans. i am talking about anyone who says that one team is cheating, lying, etc. but think their team is squeeky clean. same goes for minor infractions that get blown up into a scandal among fans just b/c its a hated rival.
2)gray line is within the rules, but gets portrayed as cheating, lying, etc. bumping, webcast, etc all probably stretch the boundary of a rules intent, but are perfectly legal.
3)cheating is cheating. winning by cheating is not winning.
4) actually, i am being perfectly honest. i will sleep just fine.
