Arizona State’s Carpenter could be better after surgery

Every now and then I’ll update you on some interesting dates and events that pertain to college football. Mark your calendar for:

1. Rudy Carpenter’s return from surgery: Thought Georgia fans would like to know that the Arizona State quarterback had minor surgery on his right thumb (throwing hand) on Wednesday. Carpenter hurt the thumb in a game against California last October and just played through the pain for the rest of the season. Carpenter told reporters in Phoenix that he would start throwing again in June and be ready for preseason practice in August. He expects to be more accurate and have a little more velocity on the ball after the surgery. That’s just one more note to file away for Georgia, which goes to Arizona State on Sept. 20. Carpenter, who has started 31 games for Arizona State, has 7,998 yards in career passing with 65 touchdowns. He is in position to break many of the school’s passing records that are held by Andrew Walter.

2. Les Miles on SportSouth: LSU coach Les Miles sat down with SportSouth for the network’s “In My Own Words” series. The installment with Miles airs tonight at 10:30 and will be replayed on April 27 (5 p.m., 9:30 p.m.) and April 30 (9 p.m.). I’ve seen an advance copy and Miles talked candidly on a number of topics, including the reports on the eve of the SEC championship game that he was headed to Michigan. When you consider all the things that had to happen to get Miles and LSU in the BCS championship game, it’s a pretty compelling story.

3. Chick-fil-A Alma Mater Golf: This is the time of year when coaches hit the trail for booster meetings and golf with alumni. And next Tuesday a bunch of coaches, 14 in fact, will play in the Chick-fil-A Alma Mater event at Reynolds Plantation near Greensboro. The coaches, who include Steve Spurrier, Nick Saban, Tommy Tuberville, and Paul Johnson will play with famous former athletes from their schools. Saban will play with Kenny Stabler, Spurrier with Sterling Sharpe, Tubervile with Pat Sullivan and Johnson with Jon Barry. Other coaches scheduled to participate include UConn basketball coach Jim Calhoun and Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe, who will be playing with Billy Packer. Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer and former Hokie basketball star Dell Curry (father of Davidson’s Stephen) are the defending champions. CBS will tape the event and show it on Christmas Day. The day will also generate $375,000 in scholarship donations to the participating schools. It’s a neat event. For more information visit www.Chick-fil-ABowlAlmaMater.com.

4. Jan. 2, 2009: For college football fans, that date just got a lot better. The Liberty Bowl announced this week that it will celebrate its 50th anniversary by playing on Jan. 2. It will be the first time that the Memphis Bowl, which features an SEC team, has ever been played in January. That sets up a pretty good Jan. 2 as the Cotton Bowl will move to that date and kick off at 2 p.m. The Liberty bowl will be at 5 p.m. while the Sugar Bowl will be at 8:20 p.m.

5. A final decision on Ben Mauk: Wake Forest coach Jim Grobe told reporters on a conference call this week that he submitted a letter to support Ben Mauk’s appeal for a sixth year of eligibility. Mauk, who now plays at Cincinnati, redshirted as a freshman at Wake Forest in 2003. He played two seasons and then as a redshirt junior in 2006 suffered a season-ending injury in the Deacons’ first game. After freshman QB Riley Skinner led Wake Forest to the ACC championship that season, Mauk transferred to Cincinnati and threw for 3,121 yards and 31 touchdowns in 2007. Mauk’s original request for another year was turned down. Grobe’s letter is part of the appeal.

“The presidents have told us that they like redshirting because it increases the chances that the young man will graduate,” Grobe said. “I think if you redshirt as a freshman, you should be given the opportunity to play for four seasons. If you have a major injury and miss an entire year, that year should be given back to you.” Mauk would appear to be deserving of that year but in all things, the NCAA worries about setting a precedent that others could potentially abuse.

Give them the sixth year.

Most of these kids will never play at the next level and the schools get so much from these kids.

If they miss a season b/c of injury they deserve one more.

With more bowls seemingly playing their games later than in the past I think it is inevitable that we are headed to a playoff.Obviously you have more games played after Jan. 1st than ever before thus the argument that the season is too long will not be able to be used much longer.

Jim Grobe is one class act, and one fine coach. What He has done with the talent on hand at Wake is amazing. To top it off he has remained loyal to Wake, even though We all know He could be coaching a much bigger program if He so desired. This in an age when so many are blinded by Their own ambition!

I still do not believe that we are playing Arizona State AT Arizona State. Its amazing. I think the Pac 10 is an underrated conference and if you can beat one of their best teams at their place you have accomplished something. Not counting bowl games, this will be the toughest non-conference game that I can remember Georgia ever playing. It sure beats pounding hapless ACC teams like a drum. We need more of these kind of games.

Vandy’s last bowl game was in 1982!! The program is in good shape with Bobby Johnson. Vandy has had more NO. 1 NFL players drafted than the crimson tide in this decade. Bama last player drafted in the 1st round was Shaun Alexander in 2000. ROLL TIDE

As a Texas fan, the thing that shocked me about Arizona State was how slow they were compared to Texas. If they had speed problems with Texas, then they will have even more with Georgia as I swear Georgia is a hair faster. They just could not run with the Horns. Hook ‘Em

With or without Rudy Carpenter, Georgia will crush Arizona State. Les Miles is only second to Steve Spurrier relative to speaking “candidly.” Neither the Chick-fil-A Alma Mater Golf Tournament nor the Liberty Bowl will be marked on my calender. Ben Mauk does deserve another season of eligibility.

It is going to be interesting isn’t it? Not to take away anything from the year that ASU had last year, but I don’t think you can read to much into the fact that they were co-champs in the PAC-10. USC was injury plaqued and Oregon lost Dixon. Had these things not happened, you are probably looking at a 3rd place team. Not to mention that they are getting UGA at the beginning of the year when they are still “fresh” (hopefully). I think that Jason is right in saying that UGA’s overall team speed is going to pose some problems. Especially on the defensive side of the ball.

It doen’t matter what Rudy does against our D. The game is going to be won or lost depending on ASUs ability to stop Knowshaun and Company. I think our D can get more stops than ASU’s can.

Gosh Tony,

He might break all the great records of ANDREW WALTERS???? Have him Call Timmy Tebow or Colt Brennan and ask them about Georgia’s defense. Every year we hear about some great offense to be afraid of(remember the cowgirls, the team that plays on the ugly blue field,or the ones who run beside a big buffalo)Don’t believe the hype— it’s still the PAC 10 and we’re still Georgia.

the AZ St. game will be interesting. how well will the DAWGS travel out west? but i agree w/ previous comments about the pac 10 being weak. they have been dominated by 1 team for how long?? The SEC is a far tougher conference to play in and win championships. I’ve always said any SEC team that can roll thru the season undefeated should play for the NC. hope to see everyone in Miami in Jan!!!

Look at how Texas thumped them in the Holiday bowl. Jamal Charles ran all over them, and Marino might have a step on him. A healthy dose of the running game should tire their defense out early, and make Carpenter over-reach in the passing game. Stafford will just have to manage the game and not turn the ball over.

It would help us if that game is played late afternoon or evening out there. You always hear about the humidity not being as bad but the oven-like heat will be a factor especially early to mid afternoon. If we shut down their run I don’t think it will matter how well Carpenter throws it.

Since I have followed UGA Football since the mid 1970’s, I am unable to EVER remember UGA traveling outside of the Southeast to play a top contender from another conference. This will be great for the Bulldog Football Program and Damon Evans should be given credit since he personally stated that he was going to help upgrade UGA’s schedule after taking over.

UGA, the most over confident fan base ever! This over confidence will spill over to the team. You’re gonna lose to ASU. When’s the last time you’ve played outside the south? The 50’s, 60’s? When? Every UGA fan thinks they’re so high and mighty, as if you’re a storied program with great traditions. The only tradition I know of is the fan base thinks every year they’re going to win the National Championship. You’re not going to win the National Championship! You can’t even beat ASU! You’re a sorry fan base.

Georgia needs to do the same thing Texas did to Carpenter—-ring his bell a couple of times early and he loses his composure. I’ve watched him yell at his own teammates and coaches enough to know he is not a leader. Georgia also needs to be ready for the weather conditions—-it could be anything in late Sept from beautiful to beastly hot. But in the end, the result for ASU should be the same as their game against the Longhorns.

Mauk deserves another year. As far as setting a “precedent”, sixth-year eligibility is entirely in the discretion of the NCAA. There aren’t that many requests on a year-to-year basis and each one can and should be dealt with individually. That requires some actual effort on the NCAA’s part, which is most likely what makes them view these requests with such a stink eye.

Boy you told us didn’t you Road Games! How about some actual X’s & O’s or facts as to why we will lose to ASU? Needs to be a little better reason than because we’ll be west of the Mississippi. Yep, we were overconfident against Hawaii, Boise State & Oklahoma State too, weren’t we?

By Bob in SF

April 24, 2008 2:11 PM | Link to this

The Dawgs CAN NOT get over confident vs. ASU. Carpenter is legit and the ASU line is much better the Hawaii’s! The Dawgs will have to be patient and try to keep their D off the field as much as possible. I know it gets darn hot in Athens but I’ve been to a game in Tempe on a September night and it is still in the mid to high 90’s hours after the sun goes down. Use those stud RB’s and tire out ASU’s D and everything should be OK.

Jim,

This is the first time that Georgia has played a game west of the Pecos River (excluding an O’ahu Bowl appearance in 2000) in 66 years. No other team in Division-I with more than 600 wins has played fewer inter-sectional games away from their home region. It will be their first venture outside of the Southeastern US during the regular since 1965 when they beat Michigan (4-6 that year) in Ann Arbor. That team was not coached by Bo Schembechler.

One quick thing. Although I believe Texas’s team speed is slower than Georgia by a hair, Charles is much faster than Moreno. Charles was a legitimate track star, and Texas’s track team suffered when he left to concentrate on football. I am not taking anything away from Moreno as I believe he is already a better back than Charles as a whole, but not in speed.

Arizona State had one of the nation’s best offensive lines last year. This year one offensive line starter returns in addition to Carpenter and 2 wide receivers.

They have 6 starters back on defense but must replace 3 of their defensive backs.

Their team speed is SEC caliber. There is a big difference between the Big 10 and the PAC 10.

The heat will give Georgia a big advantage because of our depth.

Potassium replacement will be necessary to avoid cramps. It isn’t as much a problem with Southeast humidity, but it can cause problems in Arizona.

I expect a good game and for Georgia to win.

The only way we don’t beat arizona state by at least two touchdowns is if our team bus breaks down on the way to the stadium!!

All you naysayers can naysay….and all the dawg fans that like to be cautious….can continue to be cautious.(you have earned that right over the past twenty years)

But the Dawg team that will take the field this fall is by far the best football team that has taken the field for UGA ever!! This team is soo deep at every position with supertalented players. Couple that with our top notch coaching staff….

so when are the goats going to play a real team away? why not visit the horseshoe and see what a real football crowd looks like. one that is classy. im sure texas or uscw would give you a shot.

There is no shame in losing to a good team. We lost to a great lsu team that was ‘full strength’ for the first time since early season. And we played them at home.

We would be happy to play some sec teams up north including ugay, but the whole country knows that the sec is chicken to play a good team anywhere but at home. Didn’t auburn cancel out a tuff game a few years back?

Last time i looked we have been in 3 nc games in the last 6 years winning one. Now tell me… when is the last time the dogs even sniffed a nc game? 1981! That is funny. Talk about irrelevant. Even gt has a nc in 1990.

As that gtfan pointed out,the dawgs wish they even had a good team every 25 years.

You dogs remind me of cicadias. they appear once ever 17 years or so. Personally i think that the university sic georgia cicadias has a nice ring to it.

uga95: just to remind you that GT has 4 national titles compared to your pitiful 1 national title, and GT’s national title is more recent than your squeaker of ND in 1980.

UGA will never gain any respect or style points until UGA can finally open on the road with a competitive team. Opening GSU at home then Central Michigan is typical for the so called Bulldog Nation and weak.

At least Auburn stepped up and opened with USC a few years back, and got throttled. I suppose you took a page from AU’s book and decided you do not want any part of the Pac-10 action.

CMR has your program so snowed it is unreal. He wins a few games towards the end of 2007, then gets a fat raise. Why do you think Bobby let him out of FSU? That’s right, he does not have the football intellect required to bring your team to a national title, and never will. But keep giving those raises, we love it.

I give you 8-4 at best in 2008, Spurrier and Baton Rouge will continue to own you, as well as UT will step on your face again in Athens. Oh by the way, UF will throttle you in 2008 after what you pulled last year, and I just hope CMR tries it again, because it will be another Miami vs. FL Atlantic situation and suspensions will fly.

It is sad to think this football program has been running for over 100 years and only 1 national title to its name. Hell, even Miami has 5 National Titles, all within the past 25 years.

Go ahead, open with Miami, Texas, USC or OU, then you will get some respect, but until then, UGA football will continue to be regarded as the most overrated program in NCAA D-1A.

UGA is a joke, plain an simple.

I absolutely agree with P Dawg, that OSU is a joke and their schedule is weak. LSU beat the #$#$ out of them last year, and OSU should be embarassed to take a whipping like that.

I have little if any respect for the Big-10, who is actually blocking any chance for a playoff system as a matter of self-preservation.

By the way, LSU is reloading and although they might not be in the hunt in 2008, look out for 2009 and 2010.

i keep seeing all this inet bravado from sec fans yet i see no answers.

why does the sec only play tough teams in their own back yard?

i could swear that osu played the last two nc games in the sec back yard. didnt osu play lsu at home? am i mistaken?

once again ill ask. when are you sec teams going to visit the horseshoe?

what i thought!

i will agree that sec is a tough conference but if any of the other major conferences cheated at recruiting like the sec they would compete with the sec and more.

for instance… doesnt uga have major recruiting violations every 4 years? doesnt the ncaa rule book have multiple rules named after sec coaches?

if we leveled the playing field for the other major conferences the sec would be a has been.

i have seen article after article after article this year alone on potential recruiting violations by sec coaches. didnt bama whine n cry cause they were sending recruits 500 text messages a day during classes no less. that certainly shows that the sec puts fb wins above the student athlete.

you will never see the osu have 34 recruits like albama did this year. what a farce.

id rather finish 2nd every year that have to cheat to finish first.

i know i know… here comes the broken record response…. ‘the sec beat the bucks in the championship game’.

thats the only thing that the sec can hang their hat on. sheesh.

P Dawg wrote: “osu plays a cupcake schedule EVERY year and then skates into the nc and usually gets STOMPED! You idiots NEEDED to put Texas and USC on your weak a$$ schedule to get a little respect.”

Do some research, OSU has regularly had a quality OOC opponent (yes, even Washington last year counts) and most years plays UM, UW, PSU, and Iowa who seem to do pretty well against the “big boys” of the SEC. The games against Texas, USC, VaTech, and Nebraska were all on the schedule well before the last two years. OSU didn’t “need” to play them, they chose to actively pursue marquee matchups. OSU’s first 1-AA game in their history was last year (find me an SEC team that doesn’t regularly schedule a 1-AA team, and I’ll give them a little more respect).

“What is your record vs the SEC anyway? 0-9” Da**, I had forgotten. Hey, what’s UGA’s record vs. the Big Least? 0-4 Does that make it any more important? Try a rational arguement, brother.

everyone knows that you kept the thug maurice clarrett around with illegal actions. he even tells names and when he got his payolla.

you only got into the big game last year because of two other teams losses the final week and the fact that your conference REFUSES to get a championship game.

Jan. 2 just got better for football fans because of the…Liberty Bowl?

I wish the powers-that-be never started messing with the great game of college football back in the 80s. They haven’t stopped since. Tees (which gave us 60-yard plus field goal attempts) to no tees…kickoff moved from the 40 to the 35 to the 30, “halo rule,” then no halo rule, Bowl Games played after New Years, the BCS, BCS bowl games followed by a “national championship game” played at the site of one of the BCS bowls, minor bowls moved to New Years, the demotion of the once great and tradition-rich Cotton Bowl, etc.

Stop it, please. Or at least take a year off.

You need to go dig up Woody Hayes and come on down South and play in the SEC and get your a* handed to you at least 4 or 5 times every year playing our schedule year after year. SEC teams play the toughest schedule in the country every year w/o playing any other conferences teams. Why do you think the SEC fares so well during bowl season? Because we are the best in the country but we beat each other up all year and most of the time get screwed out of the big game. But when we get there, we win it! And win it big! So get over yourself and wake up to the realization that IF you beat USC and Michigan ( the only two real teams on your schedule ) you’ll get another SEC BEATDOWN at the hands of UGA in 08 ’ and beyond! Can’t wait. Please go undefeated and let us have some of that weak s@#$! PLEASE!!!

Hey, Mike Bobo 17 INT:

Here you are again—your usual unsubstantiated crapola on display like some cheap bobblehead doll display at the flea market.

Do you remember the season opener in 2003? Against Clemson, at Death Valley? A 30-0 whitewash.

The Dawgs are playing a far tougher schedule than Tech this year, and the Arizona State game at ASU belies your argument about “not wanting PAC-10 action.”

I find it hard to believe that a fan of a team that has been beaten like a drum by Georgia for seven straight years would have any cause for crowing about how “weak” Georgia’s schedule in the SEC is when Tech plays in the ACC (the Southern version of the MAC). Head-to-head competition is the ultimate comparator, and on that basis, Georgia owns the Jackets lock, stock and barrel.

BTW, Spurrier at USC doesn’t “own” Georgia (he’s 1-2), and LSU doesn’t own Georgia either (the Dawgs have won the last two meetings, including the 2005 SEC title game).

You’re pathetic, as usual.

And Mr. Buckeye, losers always accuse winners of cheating. Georgia hasn’t been on NCAA probation for any recruiting violation for decades. By contrast, Ohio State perpetuated a travesty with Maurice Clarett (one of many such incidents under Jim Tressel).

Play us. Please. We’ll kick your butt like every other SEC team does. Hell, we’d play you in the K-mart parking lot in Columbus.

No cheating required.

Right on heeldawg. They know what’s up and that’s why they’re on this blog in the first place! It’s where all the excitement is. The way UGA’s loading up, the competition is getting mighty scared right now. UGA’s coaches are having a field day recruiting because the cream of the crop wants to come here and be a part of it! We’re getting em’ from all over the place. GOOO DAWGS!!!

BTW buckeye fans, didn’t you get beaten at home last year to a team that got their asses handed to them by USC in the rose bowl?(where UGA should have been playing) I’d be a little worried if I were you. Like I said before, hope you win though because we want to be next in line to spank that a* for the nc!

Buckeye,

You state that you lost the past two nc games “in the SEC’s backyard.” Do they teach geography in Ohio? When the media darling Buckeyes got their DI%#$ knocked in the dirt by the SEC chamption Gators I’m pretty sure it was in Arizona (by all means, a neutral site). That must be a pretty big backyard…Idgit.

P Dawg, you want play circular losses, UGA lost to Tennessee, who got whupped by Alabama (who also lost to Louisiana Monroe). I’d be a little worried if I were you, about that Sept 27 date.

Missouri, and maybe Va Tech are the only schools that didn’t lose to a “lesser” team last year.

An MNC would be nice but let’s try for the SECC first. One game at a time and let the rest take care of itself.

A Georgia fan urging to wwait and let things take care of themselves? A fan who is not already proclaiming the 2008 team champs? Well how do Cuz, I never thought I’d see the day. You are a breath of fresh air. And good luck to you this season.

P dawg … loading up on those recruits are we?

last time i looked theosu was in the top 5 for 08 with only 19 recruits. osu by far had more 5 star an 4 star players than anybody else. BY FAR!!!

as far as 09 goes… you should check scout first before you bleat…

the goats have 9 commits 4 of which are 4 stars an the others are 1,2 and 3 stars. oooooh those recruits are rolling in. the trick is… will they qualify.

meanwhile at theosu… they have 11 commits 8 of which are 5 star (say it outloud so you understand… FIVE STAR) and 4 star players.

we wont even mention the fact that early this week the top ol in the 06 class tranfered from um to play for the bucks. even though his dad played for um. he was a 5 star player an the no 5 player in the country. boren is his name i beleive.

we are in the hunt for 8 more 5 star players this year.

and we dont have to break the rulz or stretch them like the sec does. 34 recruits anybody? now that is pathetic.

can any of you uga trailor fans answer 3 questions honestly?

why do the gt fans refer to uga as the goats?

how many nc games have you played in since hercshel played.

why does your qb spoon with other players on your team. that pic is circulating on the buckey board. thanks for the laugh.

uga is irrelevant. spurrrier is right on the money. even the vol an fl fans recognize uga is a perennial wannabe.

finally…. clarret has issues. he is in jail. you can lead a horse to water but … we tried to help him. theosu was investigated with a fine toothed comb an NO violations were unconvered wrt clarett.

btw if no bullfrog can answer those 3 questions i posed than i suggest you stfu….

i think ill have fries with that shake.

I can answer the goat comment Mr. Buckeye. One of the first animal mascots was a goat. The bulldawg came later.
