LSU’s Perrilloux a great player, but not a leader
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Nobody asked me but .
1. Ryan Perrilloux is a great player, but he is not a good leader. I was shocked—simply shocked—to learn that after his third suspension the LSU quarterback had been allowed to return to the team and just might get to play in Saturday’s spring game. Is there anyone out there who REALLY thought Perrilloux would not make it back into the program?
I’m really not criticizing coach Les Miles. He’s going the extra mile trying to salvage the career of a talented kid. But at what cost? Unless Perrilloux changes his ways, this is going to happen again and the headlines won’t be about LSU trying to defend its national championship. Coverage of Ryan Perrilloux’s “problems” will define this entire team.
Unless he changes, Perrilloux will never lead LSU to any kind of championship and the Tigers are certainly capable of winning the SEC West again. At this level, there is a lot more to playing quarterback than running and throwing. It’s called leadership. And right now, Perrilloux doesn’t have it.
2. Moody might not be the answer for Florida: We recently read in the Gainesville Sun that running back Emmanuel Moody, the transfer from Southern Cal, is having problems picking up Dan Mullen’s offense. That’s curious because Moody has been with the team an entire year while sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules. Here is what head coach Urban Meyer told the Gainesville Sun: “He’s a little bit behind. I didn’t think he’d be that far behind because he was here all fall, but it seems like everything is new and it shouldn’t be that way. But he’s a talented guy.” Meyer also said: It’s too early to say exactly what his role will be.” I’m not sure what all that means for Moody and Florida, but it can’t be good.
3. South Carolina made a good move with Eric Norwood: Norwood, from Acworth, was one of the SEC’s best defensive ends last season. But new defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson believes Norwood can do a lot more than rush the quarterback. So he’s moving Norwood to outside linebacker, which will give him a chance to make even more plays. As we’ve said before, spring practice is about identifying the best players at each position and getting your 11 best on the field at the same time.
4. The Joe Paterno situation is fixing to get ugly: I’ve written it many times. I’ve said it on TV and radio and in other public forums: After 56 years at Penn State—42 as head coach—Joe Paterno has earned the right to stay for as long as he wants. He is entering the final year of his contract and said the other day he’s doesn’t care if he gets a new deal or not. As much as I admire coach Paterno, he’s kidding himself if he thinks this situation will have no impact on recruiting. Unless this gets resolved by this summer, president Graham Spanier and athletics director Tim Curley are going to be pushed into a corner and forced to make a decision they don’t want to make.
5. We can do without the “family values” drama at Michigan: Michigan offensive lineman Justin Boren has decided to leave the school and transfer because, in his words, new coach Rich Rodriguez has eroded “the family values” of the program in just a few short months as head coach. Boren also told reporters that he was having a tough time adjusting to a new offensive system that required the linemen to run to the line of scrimmage on almost every play. Michigan hired Rodriguez because the powers that be liked his offensive system, which everyone knew would be an adjustment for the players. Players either like it or they don’t. If they don’t, they are free to transfer as quarterback Ryan Mallett did. It’s okay not to like the system. It’s okay not to like the coach. That makes sense. But please spare us the “family values” drama. What does that even mean?

Tony, how can you be shocked?
Remember this is the conference that wanted to play football the Sat. after 9/11.
It’s only about football in the SEC. They would play murders if they didn’t have to go to prison. Every team with the exception of Vanderbilt would have done the same thing as LSU.

Ramble on makes generalizations that make him feel better about being an alum from an innstitution that lacks success on the gridiron.
Not surprised about LSU’s handling of the QB or Moody struggling some. I still have a lot of respect for JoePa, but more and more he is beginning to sound like just a stubborn old man, unwilling to accept reality even to the expense of the program he helped build. It’s a shame. As for the Michigan situation, I agree with ya TB. But why did Rodriguez even respond?

play murders?
New from Mattel the game of murders.
If you want to see the fine players of the ACC in action you need to look no farther than:
Google- Clemson Ken Page and Cash.
I guess he’s fund raising for the school.
or
Ramble On- what about your own Reuben Houston?
“That’s right officer the 94 pounds is for my own personal use!!”
or
Go watch tape of that Miami vs FAU game. Those are some fine citizens.
or
My all time favorite is

Don’t throw rocks in glass houses.
The one thing I do know is that Tubs would have kicked this guy off the team.
By the way Robert Dunn who missed most of spring practice because of class conflicts, was a stand out on A-day.
I guess Tubs knows the right ones to give a second chance.
AJC- when you pull this blog would you please email me with the reason because I can’t figure it out.
I guess its that SEC edumacation.

Just as Perrilloux is getting away with his unacceptable behavior because there has been no legitimate discipline leveled against him, so too will Les Miles be allowed to repeatedly “salvage” Perrilloux’s career as long as LSU allows him to do so. It’s a very unfortunate situation and insulting to those fans that believe in the concept of the “student-athlete.”

Perriloux is an example of what happens when an athlete goes through life treated to a different set of rules than everyone else, Mike Vick, for example, but I am still unclear on the nature of Ryan’s crimes. I read that he missed some classes and a team meeting and was in a bar fight last year. I think that most SEC coaches base their consequences for bad behavior on the ability of the player and not the crime. For all of his piety, Richt is the master of non punishment. Danell Ellerbe should be in prison for auto theft and assault, among other infractions. There are a surprising number of dropped charges against Georgia players, and I would like to know where the money comes from to clean things up for guys like Ellerbe and Thurman. As we know, Richt’s recovery program didn’t work too well for Thurman.

1-According to what little info that has come out the young man had a legitimate reason for leaving campus,He just didn’t go through proper channels. His track record is not good so He didn’t get any breaks from Miles. As for Ryan’s leadership,We will have to wait and see. 2-Meyer is using coachspeak to motivate Moody, otherwise He would not have brought up this subject. Moody should get plenty of pt. Richt is doing something similar with King, like saying that King may not be number two on the depth chart unless He does a better job of picking up blocking assignments. Yeah, right! 3-Will USC be the first SEC school with a 300 lb corps? 4- I hope this situation gets resolved soon and Joepa can go out with dignity. According to some pundits the Paterno situation was one factor in Pryor’s signing with OSU, so Penn St’s. recruiting may already be affected. 5-We all know the “slow” tag that has been attached to the Big 10,whether it is fair or not. We also know that Rich Rod’s offense is anything but slow. He wants to go no-huddle and He wants those linemen SPRINTING out of the huddle so he has been running the heii out of Them in practice. The “family values” of being fat and lazy are being destroyed. An o-lineman is the last player You want to quit in a game, and this Guy seems to have some “quit” in Him. Big Blue will probably be better off without Him.

Agree completely on the last point about Boren. There is no need to have such harsh words for the program as you’re leaving. It’s my understanding that Rodriguez & UM released Boren unconditionally, so that he may sign with any program he wants (including Ohio State, which is where many believe he will end up). The kid should say thanks for the release and exit quietly. My guess is the staff will use these comments to fuse the team and gain their family atmosphere.
Here’s a question about Norwood for any Carolina fans. Wasn’t Cliff Matthews moved to linebacker as well? If so, is there that much depth at the d-end position to move two of your most promising players to linebacker?

Although I do believe there should be some level of leniency with these kids, I also believe it depends on what they did and if they seem to have learned their lesson. Perrilloux obviously hasn’t. But I remember saying when this last situation came up that at LSU, he won’t miss a single SEC game. I did believe that he would miss the opener against some cupcake but it doesn’t even look like he’ll sit that one out. Anyone that thinks CMR would put up with this is mentally challenged.

Can you imagine being a head coach at a major university? Dealing with the alumni, athletic board, influential boosters and 85 players that you hope make the right decision every day? Not only are you under the microscope of how you run your program but you have to baby sit these young men. I do not envy any of that. It is the coach’s responsibilty to do the right thing. He must try to recruit individuals of character of whom he can trust. Unfortunatley there are times that a young man is going to make a mistake and when you have 85 indviduals it is hard not to have a few bad apples. Sometimes a player will make one mistake, maybe twice and then there the ones that are habitual and will never learn. As a former player I can remember the eniticements of things we should have not been doing. There is a lot of pressure on being a student/athlete. Not only to perform on the field but to make passing grades, be a role model, say the right thing and represent your team as well as your school. It is a 24 hour a day job. Every time you turn around someone wants a piece of you. You have to make wise choices and not put yourself in a bad situtaion. As individuals and not players we are different and handle ourselves as young men. I believe in strong discipline and being able to accept responsibility.I also believe in second chances but three strikes and you should be out. It is the players’ responsibility for his conduct, but discipline has be handed down by the coaching staff. I guess Miles and the Old Ball Coach will accept bad behavior from QB’s when they do not feel they have another starter. Character breeds winners and poor decisions can bring down the whole team. I hope the kid at LSU gets his act together as well as Garcia at South Carolina. Both have a great deal of talent. Garcia is on his way to jail time if he does not get some self control. Both coaches have shown a lack of intestinal fortitude with their handling of each player. All schools and conferences have their own share of problems. It is the responsibility of the coach to develop young mean not only on the playing field but in the classroom and social life as well. I am disappointed in both coaches. Step up to the plate and make them own to their actions… Look at Dennis Felton, you may not agree with everything he does but he kicked off two players on his team that would have made a major difference. You have to admire a man for sticking with his principles and enforcing rules. He happened to win the SEC tourney. Think his players knew the discipline and sacrifice? Character breeds winners not only on the playing field but in life. There should not be a double standard for regardless who you are. These young men are given every opportunity in the world to become a success. Student/athletes are given every opportunity. Free education with the best tutors available. Adulation form fans and alumni. Being in the spotlight, free housing and a once in the lifetime experience. It is something that is wonderful to some and a hinderance to others. We all handle things differently. Young men are impressionable and vulnerable. However, it is the players repsoniblity to make wise deicsions and not put himself in a bad situation. One thing to remember is we all make mistakes. No one is perfect but sooner or later you have to pay for your mistakes. All you SEC haters need to get a life. Your respective schools have their problems as well. I do not know of a major university that at one time has not faced adversity. The SEC is a highly publicized conference and the media feeds of anything negative. Roswell Ed hit the nail on the head in his comments. Imagine the media frenzy if Rueben Houston had gone to Auburn, Bama, Florida or Georgia. Tony thanks for your blog and I enjoy reading your posts. You give us a chance to voice our thoughts. After reading this I felt like I needed to voice my opinion and I appreciate the resource to do it.

Has the SEC had more issues than the ACC in regards to football players?
YES
Is the ACC innocent?
NO
That was my only point after
rub-one off’s post.
Being good at football causes some programs to cut corners.
In the ACC, the teams that care about football cut corners
ie Free Shoes, Miami, VT and Clemson nobody else in the conference cares and their football teams are a reflection on that.
In the SEC only Vandy cares nothing about football and therefore year in and year out they stay out of trouble.
By the way
I think the SEC is MUCH BETTER than they were in the 80s and early 90s.
The commish made clean up a priority and O believe it shows.

Tony,
The scuttlebutt out of Ann Arbor is that this kid Boren is a pretty religious kid who’s used to a certain way of speaking and being spoken to. Under Lloyd Carr, Boren and his teammates were never cursed by the old coaching staff, they were spoken to like men.
It seems that ole’ RichRod and his coaching staff speak in way that would make a Marine blush. Boren, and other players as well, find this form of communication disrespectful from the coaches and at odds with the family atmosphere that used to exist at Michigan. Of course, I wouldn’t expect any less from a coach who likes his thug athletes like Chris Henry and Pacman Jones, but I guess Boren didn’t want to be around a coaching staff like that. Say it’s the difference in a Tony Dungy style of coaching and a Bill Parcells style of coaching. It seems Boren takes his Christian beliefs more seriously than most of us and didn’t want that kind of speech pollution in his life.
I don’t blame him or cast stones his way.

I appreciate Your blogs and the articles Carter is doing but I would like a chance to read some of My fellow fan’s opinions on the Dawgs. BTW, Tech’s beat writers are doing a bang up job, it seems that Johnson is bringing a new mind set to Tech’s practice field. It was not an update on AU’s spring.
It was an update on Robert Dunn.
Whenever I bring up the fact that Tommy T won’t put up with kids behaving badly they always
bring up Dunn.
He’s a kid from Augusta who spent his senior year in HS on house arrest.
The kid was in the wrong place at the wrong time and with the wrong people.
No excuses he got what he deserved.
The victims in the crime, where he had stolen goods in his car, testified in his behalf. His friend had stolen the goods.
He also pulled a gun at a McDonalds. The charge was second in nature to the theft charge. That’s not a wrong place/wrong time deal.
I would say going to a McDonalds also shows a lot of bad judgment.
This was all before his senior year.
The kid was really contrite, hit the books and qualified when no one thought he would.
Tubs saw the good in the kid and offered him.
He’s now a senior whose had a clean nose since and is set to graduate.
Someone at the AJC should do a story on Mr Dunn. A bad story that actually turns out good.

One SEC school did deal with a player. South Carolina suspended Stephen Garcia for the rest of spring, kicked him out of his dorm room and told him to go home to Tampa after the semester is over and not to return to Columbia until August 15—and what he did pailed in comparison to Perilloux’s transgressions. Not returning until August 15 means he will miss all summer workouts and half of training camp. That guarantees he won’t be the starting QB when Carolina lines up against NC State to start the season.
Next season’s starting LB corps of Jasper Brinkley, Eric Norwood and Melvin Ingram is going to be brutal at USC.

Travis, I have heard that the extra weight hasn’t cost Brinkley any speed, if that is true He should be outlawed. The way He hits and at 275 He could ruin some future NFL stars’ careers before they start. Just kidding! Bob, at times a coach will use bad language and question a players manhood in an attempt to motivate Him. In the old days a coach would go so far as to grab a player’s face mask and shake Him or kick him in the butt when He was down in his stance. According to legend Bear Bryant once walked behind His o-lineman kicking each one in the butt. An assistant yelled ” Coach, what are You doing?”. “Looking for the sob mean enough to kick me back!” Bear growled. I have heard some of the old timers say that Wally Butts at UGA would curse His players like dogs {pun intended}. Butts had a lineman named Wyatt Posey, that, as one old timer told me, was “crazy”. Butts once cussed Posey out on the practice field and told Him He could go home because he wasn’t aggressive enough to ever play a down at UGA. Later on in the scrimmage Wyatt ran over the man trying to block Him, picked up the tailback and body slammed Him, then Posey kicked UGA’s star tb in the head and spit in his face. He looked Butts right in the eye and said, “is that aggressive enough for You Coach?”. Butts turned the air blue! Posey later became an assistant coach for Butts. And You people talk about “thuggish” behavior like it was something new. The truth is that football is a tough, violent sport played and COACHED by tough, and sometimes violent people. As long as the violence is confined to Saturday afternoon and within the rules We all cheer, but make no mistake about it, ramming Your body into someone at full speed is violence. On the field it may be a “clean Hit”, on the street it would be assault and battery. I love football, but I have no illusions about it being a sport for “gentlemen”. That would be golf.

By the way, just to remind folks, Tech threw Reuben Houston off their team. It took a court order to get him back on the team. The complaint about SEC and other frivilous programs (like FSU and Miami) is that the coaches reinstate such players after serious offenses, and that they bend the rules too often and too much to bring in low character kids in the first place, in their ever escalating search for wins.
Don’t really think anyone is clean in this one, most everybody’s dirty, some just dirtier than others. Some of the SEC schools seem to be amongst the worst offenders. I think it’s a shame. Any school that winds up on probation should be barred form radio or TV coverage…maybe that would start to slow down some of the cheatin’ and poor judgement that is shown. Right now, most schools can recruit lousy kids, and if the kid screws up (AND gets caught..a huge piece of all this), the school can always shrug its shoulders, throw the kid out of school and go on about its business like nothing happened. No real harm done, right?

I took a look at the 2008 SEC football schedule. While Georgia does have a tough schedule, Ga’s SEC foes all have SEC games the week before the Ga game except for Tennessee and Auburn… and we have the week off before Tennessee. Tennessee and Auburn do play some high school teams the week before they play Georgia. Tennessee though will have just finished with UF and Auburn. Auburn will have just played @ West Virginia and Ol Miss. Interestingly, nobody has a week off to completely create a new or unusual scheme against Georgia. So while our schedule is tough, maybe it is somewhat tempered by the fact that we don’t necessarily fit into our opponent’s schedule very well from thier point of view. It would be a bit more interesting of an analysis to consider where UGA fits into the schedule of their opposition. Tony, how about looking and analyzing that…

Just for all of you Tech fans: let me call your attention to the current front page of the AJC website.
Georgia Tech quarterback signee Jaybo Shaw of Flowery Branch was arrested early Sunday morning on a charge of underage drinking, a misdemeanor.
So, since the ACC has such higher standards than the SEC, can we expect to see his scholarship pulled by Paul Johnson?
Or should Johnson do like “bad boy” SEC coaches and give the kid a second chance?
By scooter

I took a look at composite 2008 SEC football schedule. While Ga does have a tough schedule, they play no SEC opponent that has an open date before playing Ga. So nobody will have an open week to really scheme something completely new against us. Tennessee and Auburn do play a couple of high school teams before playing Georgia, but Tennessee will have just played Florida and Auburn and Auburn will have just play West Virginia and Ole Miss. (I suppose one could argue that those high school teams are equivalent to an open week.) LSU will have just played @ Florida and at SC. Florida may have the best situation assuming that UK is really down this year. Florida has an open week, then UK, then UGA. So Ga’s schedule may be tempered slightly by the fact that we don’t necessarily fit into a perfect slot on our opponent’s schedule from their point of view. And we actually have an open date before Tennessee and Tech. It seems that the Arizona State game maybe is the trap with the time difference, but they have 3 straight games before playing Georgia. And no doubt LSU and Florida back-to-back is tough as it gets. Tony, it would be interesting to get your take on this…

Hey Tony the Tool, you have never liked LSU, not that we care in La as we have bigger fish to fry. Here is what is happening in the Red Stick. Miles has been consistent on troubled kids. If you are arrested you are gone. He did it to four guys last year w/o a thought unlike other programs. I am an LSU fan & Perrilloux is immature, no doubt. However he has never been arrested, not that I am condoning his behavior. He has done stupid things like trying to get into a casino w/ his brother’s ID & has missed team meetings/classes. As a fan/season tix holder this year rides on Jarrett Lee & him letting the other players win/lose games for us. If Perrilloux keeps his head on straight that is pure lagniappe/gravy. Anything else you say is pure speculation. BTW for all of you Miles bashers have you checked the lastest Fulmer Cup ratings. Where is LSU?

These are all nice blogs, but back to reality. GIT fires it’s “ethical” football coach because he cannot beat Georgia. Deny this, einsteins! Good tickets remain for the annual Boise-GIT Invitational Bowl! 800-555-TECH

Q. ”I wonder if GIT has any idea what Coach Richt is preparing for them.” A. “Yes and it rhymes with EIGHT.”

Since the annual bloodletting is embarrassing for all of nerddom, wouldn’t you like to see our GYM DAWGS matched against GIT’s football team? Smart money is on the Women of Athens! How come GIT’s gymnastics team is never ranked? Do they suffer from football-empathy?

UGA: Why don’t you guys just concentrate on not being screwed again by the BCS? It had to be a surprise to find out for the first time that UGA dosen’t control the politics of college football. Where’s your influence ?

Yeah houston was put back on the team by a court order but that court order didn’t say that he had to start. if you think mark richt would have started a drug dealer at running back, go back to d&d, you have no business discussing football

Roswell Ed - nice examples. Throwing rocks at glass houses is actually very effective. Perhaps you meant, “People in glass houses should not throw rocks.”

It’s the culture from whence these young thugs emerge that ensures they will be an embarrassment to their selected institution of higher learning. The government has allowed this culture to thrive and collectively we are reaping the “benefits”. Thanks to all the sniveling and apologetic liberal elitists that have wrought this upon our great nation. Until we have the guts to right the ship this “thugness” will continue to permeate our society.

Ok, one time for the misinformed.
Before I start, let me say one thing: I don’t like RP, and I don’t think LSU needs him. We one 2 natioanl Championships with Matt Mauck and Matt Flynn.
Not JaMarcus Russell.
Mies DOES run a tight ship. Tighter than Meyer, tighter than Saban.
LSU has had 4 people arrested during Miles’ tenure. All four are off the team.
One, Odom, was projected to be a starter at LB. Gone, after he assulted his ex girlfriend.
Miles is pulling out his hair on RP, and not because he’s a great talent. It’s because he can’t keep him straight, but he can’t justify yanking the kids skolly. He kid skates on thin ice- but keep skating.
I ask that you review the following facts, and then make your mind up.
RP stays on the team. He wasn’t charged.
Could he kicked him off then? However, with EIGHT surveillance cameras, nothing is seen. There was simply no way to prove it. All charges were dropped.
Again, how does Miles kick him off the team? We can’t prove anything.Could he have kicked him off?
Hell…Even RP’s mother went bezerk on that one. Supposedly “threatened” to sue LSU.Now, the kid was told to catch up al his required classes. Although his courses are not complete,he has a 3.2 just before mid term guys, but he has not completed those same requirements, including tests he’s not taken….so Miles told him no spring ball.
Again, how do you kick him off the team? I assure you this stuff happens to many kids, but not as much and as quickly and not normally to as a high profile player.
RP gets a lot of crap because he is a cocky, smartass, and occasionally seperates himself from the team.
If given the chance Miles will drop him like a bad habit…. but the kid really hasn’t done enough to justify it.
And for all of you who really think LSU will fail without him… I think we’ll be even better.
Remember the name: Jarred Lee. With Crowton as the OC, LSU has absolutely, positively NOTHING to worry about.
One more time:
Matt Mauck, the dentist. Matt Flynn won’t be drafted.
Both have rings. Jamarcus? Not even a SEC title.
LSU is under the Bulldog and Gator radar for 2008. It’s a perfect setup for 2008.
Just like this column, and the person who wrote it…. he has no idea whatsoever about RP, Les Miles, or assistant coached, or LSU.
TB has stated for years LSU would fail. He’s wrong every year.
In my opinion, TB would sell his left nut for LSU to fail.
LSU won’t.
Times have changed and like UF in the 1990s, along w/UGA now,LSU has emerged. That time is relegating the Tennessees and Bamas to a eventual world of middle packing, in the same sense as South Carolina and Mississippi State.
There’s too much current team talent, too much $$$, too much LA—in state high school talent, the facilities simply too good, and the overall program is simply too good for LSU to ever sink like the 1990s ever again.
Sucks to be you, Tony.

Ryan got suspended for missing practices and classes because his dad had died. How many of you would have gave a damn about class if one of your parents had died while you were in school? Secondly why is everybody acting like saints? We are all in college I bet all of you drink illegally while under 21, a few of smoke illegally, and I bet a few of you have tried to get in an over 21 club while being underage. Ryan tried to get in a casino same difference he just got caught. Now the incident in the club was really the only really bad thing that he did. But all this other stuff is stuff that all college kids do. Like you guys dont skip classes. Get off your high horses

Donald,
As long as he has lived, the man may have never wrote a decent article about LSU.
He sure as hell isn’t going to give RP the benefit of the doubt.
RP is a 21 year old kid. Period. Either way, LSU may be gunnin gfor another NC this fall.
