It’s already been a tough Spring
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
For some, spring practice is winding up. For others, it’s just getting started. But it’s already been a tough Spring for:
1. Stephen Garcia, QB, South Carolina: I am just about to conclude that Mr. Garcia really has no interest in playing college football. It’s hard to think differently after reading where he was caught for underage drinking, his third offense of the law since he got to campus 14 months ago. His first two offenses, both arrests, came within two weeks of one another. Coach Steve Spurrier placed Garcia on double secret probation and basically told him he was out of chances. Understand that this is not about the offense of underage drinking. Garcia is 20 years old. He graduated from high school early. The issue is being tone deaf to who you are and where you are. After two strikes, you have to be extra careful to protect the plate. There is no margin for error. Spurrier has an interesting decision to make.
2. Percy Harvin, WR, Florida: Harvin is one of the most finely tuned athletes in college football. But that is a double-edged sword. Harvin is hurt again (heel) and will likely miss the rest of the spring. That’s okay. Everybody knows what Harvin can do. He is working out trying to get stronger but his tendency to get hurt is something that coach Urban Meyer will always have to factor into his plans.
3. Auburn running backs: The Tigers have their spring game on Saturday and it comes just in the nick of time. Because of injuries, Auburn is down to one guy who has any experience, Lilburn’s Brad Lester. Hampton’s Mario Fannin, who looks to have an expanded role in Tony Franklin’s new spread offense, just had shoulder surgery. This is one reason some coaches have an early spring practice. It gives guys time to heal to get ready for August.
4. James Davis, RB, Clemson: Davis slightly injured his shoulder during a scrimmage last week and coach Tommy Bowden wisely told the rising senior from Atlanta that he should watch the rest of spring practice, which concludes on April 8. Davis and C.J. Spiller are going to be running behind a reworked offensive line and may take some shots early. They both need to be as healthy as possible.
5. Drew Weatherford, QB, Florida State: Weatherford dinged up his knee a little bit last Saturday in practice. He’ll be fine but may miss some snaps this week. That is actually good for Florida State because OC Jimbo Fisher needs to get more reps for backups Christian Ponder and D’Vontrey Richardson. Richardson, a redshirt sophomore from Leesburg, played baseball last spring but has given that up to work on football. Fisher has told me that he is going to give the young guys a chance to get in there and make some plays. No one has a lock on the job.

Any student-athlete that can’t stay away from the parties and booze should be booted. Follow the rules, period. If Spurrier keeps him on the team he’ll be grouped together with Dick Satan at bammer. Favortism within the coaching staff breeds discontent and individualistic thinking. That’ll tear a team apart in a hurry.

Not really much of a decision for Spurrier…when it comes to disciplining players he is one of the most lax coaches in the country. My guess is he will have Garcia do some running and then suspend him for the first 30 seconds of the opening game.

If Spurrier doesn’t kick Garcia off the team, he’ll be grouped together with Dick Satan at Bammer. Allowing one player, no matter how talented, to remain on the team for 3 offenses that would get other players booted after one is completely unacceptable. All a little favortism does is breed discontent and individualism. If Garcia plays, watch the Cocks hang limp.

Spurrier will probably do the right thing and boot him.
South Carolina took a step back last year, the year they were supposed to step forward. Starting with Paul Dietzel South Carolina has a history of bringing in coaches who have won National Championships elsewhere and after a couple of promising seasons they fizzle. We’ll see, but it is showing all the signs.
Unfortunately for Georgia fans, the history of the rivalry is South Carolina wins rarely, but when they do win it is always in pairs.

AFnPC…I am curious as to your comparison to the players at UA vs the QB at SC. Should Saban, Richt and other coaches throw kids off the team for one incident considered to be a mis-demeanor. There have been no multiple arrests at BAMA and the one player charged with a felony has been thrown off the team. Garcia has been arrested 3 time so there is not much of a comparison here. Dont let your hatred for Alabama get in the way of facts.

Columbia/Richland County/USC is over the top when it comes to enforcing the 21 drinking age. The 21 drinking age is so dumb they had to blackmail the states into adopting it.
I feel sorry for anyone, student-athlete or otherwise, that has to go to that school which makes the rest of the SEC (and Clempsun!) look smart. Get out while you can.

I don’t know about Garcia, but anyone considering this issue should look at Danell Ellerbe. His crimes include, drunk driving, stealing and wrecking an automobile, leaving the scene of an accident, assault, and phony id. He should be in jail, but someone dropped a whole lot of money to get him out. Richt’s punishment seems to be related to athletic ability and playing time, and not the violation as he has pulled scholarships from players with less talent than Ellerbe and Thurman for minor infractions, which of course, frees up another scholarship. This is a problem everywhere, and coaches will have to deal with it in unison, by raising academic and behavior standards and enforcing those standards conference wide.

1-Times have changed for SOS. If Spurrier was still at UF this kid would have been gone last year. He used to change QBS more often than most people change their underwear! The moron posting about disciplin in the SEC must not know that at UGA two arrests involving drinking bring an automatic two semister suspension. Since it’s spring now and summer semister doesn’t count,at UGA He could not be re-admitted until summer semister of 2009. 2-Harvin is a WR,not a RB. Tebow is a QB,not a FB. If Moody comes through Tebow and Harvin should be able to avoid somr of Their injury problems,if not UF will be in the same boat They were in last year. 3- If You had to be “down” to one RB,Lester would not be a bad chioce. 4-ALL Div 1 RBS should enter the season as healthy as possible. Moreno is going crazy on the sidelines,He wants to hit somebody so badly He is foaming at the mouth. This will not be good for the first DB that tries to tackle Him. That may be a side benefit to holding out Your proven RBS. 5-I hope Richardson gets a shot. It would be good to see a “home boy” do well.

Hey Ramble On, you are talking about the problems in the SEC, I think that the ACC has had quite a few more problems lately. Starting with half the FSU team having to stay home for a bowl game, some VT players being in the news lately for assult, and don’t even begin to mention the U. All conferences have their problems and will always have problems when dealing with young kids that are away from home for the first time. We have to remember that they still are kids, they are going to make some mistakes, and still have some growing up to do. It is how they move on from the mistakes and make changes in their lives that determines how they ultimatley should be viewed.

I’m a Gamecock fan and I think Garcia should go. I believe SOS would have kicked him off the team but now it’s a University decision. If we lose Garcia, we won’t be any worse off. Smelley can get the job done plus he’s mature. He won’t let his teammates down like Garcia has. The o-line will be better this year so he should have more time in the pocket. Also MLB Brinkley will be back (at 275 pounds I might add) to provide MUCH needed help to stop the run. If we don’t have to play catch-up, that will take pressure off Smelley too.

ProSec,You are right that college football players are young and young people make mistakes. However, there is a point where a coach throws up His hands and says “that’s enough!”. Coachs are human and every Coach is different,so this point is never the same for any two of Them. Some are “softer” than others.I have never considered Spurrier “soft”,so the way He handles this situation will tell Us a lot about the state of the Gamecock program.Garcia won’t stay around out of the goodness of Spurriers heart,He will stay only because USC is badly in need of QBS.I think that releasing this kid may be the best course for all concerned. We have seen how the Old Ball Coach treats His QBS.I am not sure Garcia can handle what SOS dishes out,if He ever gets the chance to start.

Gene,
Richt has kicked multiple talented players off of the team, but he will give them the opportunity to return if their actions are cleaned up. Richt kicked the following players off the team in recent memory: -Odell Thurman: Spent one year at Georgia Military College and earned another chance to play for the Bulldawgs
-Josh Johnson: Starting Middle Linebacker, removed from team, spent year at Georgia Military College, did not return to Georgia, signed and started with the Thundering Herd
-Akeem Hebron- Kicked off team, spent one year at Georgia Military College, Richt gave him another opportunity, currently on spring roster.
I am not saying Coach Richt is perfect, just get your facts straight.

Those of you who are whinning about Spurrier and his lack of disciplining players must have forgotten about his first year in Columbia. He was tossing kids off the team like he was culling peaches. As for “Pat”, it’s obvious that the decision is probably out of his hands now that the administration is involved.

Spurrier, in keeping with his past, will grimace, throw down his visor, run his fingers through his hair, and tell Garcia, “Give me four push ups, promise you’ll do better, and get back out there”. Then he’ll report to the AD that he’s disciplined Garcia and has fixed the problem.

Doodle, The decision is indeed out of Spurrier’s hands. I was just amused that he referred to USC as “they” and “over there” not “we.” “WE have a president, AD, and dean,” would have sounded like everybody, Spurrier included, was in the football business together.
By P Dawg
March 25, 2008 2:53 PM | Link to this
Pat, I was thinking the same thing. Doesn’t sound like he includes his leadership with that of the administration. Probably much ado about nothing though. Anyway, everyone that loves to jump all over one coach or school when a kid becomes a problem needs to take a look at their own. ALL major programs have these problems, but only a few take serious action. These coaches are under a mountain of stress to field the best team they can to bring in the most money for the school and it seems as if it’s the best players (athletically)getting in the most trouble. They are kids getting away from Mom and Dad for the first time with ego’s bigger than Shaq and they lose their minds for a while until a coach like Richt whips their butts back into shape. Spurrier doesn’t have the luxury of depth at that position so Garcia WILL play. Mark my words. If they were at UF, he’d be a gonner.

Have some standards USCgamecock! If it was one offense, no problem but the dude has been arrested 3 times in 14 months. He’s a problem. We don’t need any more problems on our team. Kids like him need to realize that having a free ride to play in the SEC is a PRIVILEGE, not a right. Garcia obviously believes that the same laws that apply to everyone else don’t apply to him. Why else would he park himself on the lawn, outside his dorm, with a cooler of beer and drink it out in plain sight of everyone to see when you are only 20 years old! That’s just dumb and I don’t want any dumb people on my team.
And as far as saying I’m not a true Gamecock, you need to take your Garcia colored glasses off because they are keeping you from seeing the praises I sung about Smelley and Brinkley.
I do agree with you that we will beat the overhyped, overated bulldogs at the WB this fall.

The final decision on whether to keep Garcia probably is out of Spurrier’s hands now.I am sure He will have some input in the process,if He hasn’t washed His hands of this kid already.I am a UGA fan but not a hater of SOS.At least not anymore, and I feel for Him in this matter.Think about it this way, every team has 85 scholarship players and you never hear about the 90% that work hard and stay out of trouble.Garcia is reputed to be a very gifted QB and the most likely to give the rest of those guys a chance to do what They are working so hard to do,that is to win games.I know from watching SOS all these years that He absolutely HATES to lose. That is the OBC’S delima. He is a strict Coach and a demanding Coach, but if Garcia goes USC’s best chance of winning may go with Him.BTW,who ever said SOS will just make Garcia do a few pushups has never seen Him ream a QB out on the sidelines! That is one thing I don’t like about Spurrier,I don’t like to see any player singled out in public for a tongue lashing.

USMCdawg, thanks for your service to our country. Having said that, you are the typical UGA fan. Woulda, coulda, shoulda. If you are going to play that game, then you shoulda consider the FACTS that if we hadn’t lost our starting nose tackle and our starting All-SEC mlb to injuries, we woulda finished better than we did.
Up until 10 years ago when I moved here, I always thought of UGA as my second favorite team. After living and working amongst the UGA faithful, I have come to hate UGA. UGA fans are the most annoying, arrogant, rude people. Maybe it’s because you have to work for GT grads, I don’t know. I’d rather lose to Clemson than UGA, and grew up hating Clemson! So yeah I’m going to harp on last year’s win because I know it pi$$es ya’ll off. And since we have our key players returning along with most of our starters (you know, basically the same team that beat you in Athens) I do feel like we will beat UGA when you come to Columbia.

Knowshon had 14 carries for 104 yards against a SC defense that was at full stregth in week 2. Knowshon typically runs better in the second half of games (see Auburn, Florida, etc). So what do you think’s going to happen when Knowshon gets 25 carries? Fried chicken! We’ve all discussed the multiple TD drops by the UGA recievers last year against SC. Neveretheless, it won’t matter if Stafford completes a pass next year against the ‘cocks, because KnoMo and Caleb king will be running up and down the field.
