Watching Tech’s Nesbitt, four others

Yes, we’re getting ready to crank up March Madness, but there is always time to keep an eye on spring ball. Here are five players I’m going to keep track of this spring in the ACC because if they get better, their teams will be better come this season:

1. Josh Nesbitt, QB, Georgia Tech: In the interest of full disclosure, you need to know that one reason I’m watching Josh is that he played at my old high school (Greene County). The other reason is that Nesbitt, who averaged 6.4 yards each of the 53 times he ran the ball as a freshman, has the physical tools to run Paul Johnson’s offense very effectively. But Nesbitt has to learn the offense and win the job against Calvin Booker, the Auburn transfer. I know this about Johnson. The guy who makes the fewest mistakes and the best decisions is going to play. It’s all about production for Georgia Tech’s coach.

2. Aaron Kelly, WR, Clemson: Running backs James Davis and C.J. Spiller get a lot of ink but this guy is as good at his position as anybody in the country. After 77 catches in his first two seasons at Clemson, the Marietta native exploded for a school record 88 catches in 2007. With 165 career catches, he only needs 52 more to become the ACC’s all-time leader. Kelly has a chance to have a monster year in 2008.

3. Thaddeus Lewis, QB, Duke: Lewis has thrown for 4,564 yards in 23 career starts, which is the fourth highest total for a sophomore in ACC history. But he only completed 55.3 percent of his passes for 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions. I say “only” because new head coach David Cutcliffe likes his quarterbacks to be up near the 60 percent mark with only single digits in interceptions.

4. Riley Skinner, QB, Wake Forest: Skinner led the Deacons to an ACC championship as a freshman and came back to help the Deacons post a 9-4 record in 2007. Last season he completed 72.4 percent of his passes but he threw too many interceptions (13). If this guy can learn to protect the ball just a little better he has a chance to be very good. He has completed 69.5 percent of his career passes. The ACC career record is 67 percent held by Virginia’s Matt Schaub. Skinner could break that record.

5. Brian Toal, LB, Boston College: In 2006 Toal was as good as any linebacker in country. He even carried the ball on goal line situations and scored six touchdowns. But shoulder problems forced Toal to undergo surgery and he was forced to sit out the entire 2007 season. Now he’s back for this senior year.

How guys like Kelley and Skinner are forced to play out of state is beyond me. If Clemson can get over the mental hurdles they can be a top 5 team this year.

Hey Roswell Ed, if no one cares about these teams then why is your gay self always posting on these message boards? You’re always the first or second to post and you provide no input into whatever is being discussed, even if it is SEC football. Please do everyone on the planet a favor and drive your car into a bridge enbankment. Wait, that won’t work because you have to have a car. On second thought please keep posting so you can make more and more of a fool of yourself. God hates you.

The answer is: NO.

The question: If 90,000 people jump off a cliff does that make it right?

SEC fans think the number of fans in the stands is the best way to measure how good a football team is (and by extension a conference). I guess Tenn. has the best football team in the SEC EVERY year, by that logic.

Watch Dwyer at Tech. He may be one of the best running backs in the country next year, breakaway speed something Tech hasn’t had in a while. The quarterback in this system needs to be cocky, hardnosed and smart. The cocky part keeps the defense guessing on what he is going to do.

Roswell Ed,

Sorry Wake is a small, elite private school with an undergrad enrollment of about 4,000. Sorry we don’t accept anyone with a pulse. Makes since to build a 80,000+ seat stadium with that small of a student body and alumni base doesn’t it?

Of course, don’t look at how many fans we brought to the Orange Bowl and Charlotte Bowl last year.

By the way, Brandon Cox and the QB’s on the current Auburn roster can’t hold a candle to Riley Skinner.

miami and fsu fans, tony has a special blog coming up just for you.as soon as the nole’s players come off suspension and miami wins a game.should be around the first weekend in november!1-option offenses are high risk high and reward.high risk because so much ball-handling is close to the line of scrimmage.a lb in the wrong place,a missed block by an o lineman,or a dropped lateral can lead to an easy score by the opposition.an option team cannot give up too many easy scores because it is a poor come from behind offense.high reward because when run correctly it eats up a lot of yardage and clock and puts points on the board.you are right about decision making tony, this type o cannot use a qb that makes mistakes.timing is paramount for the qb,he must make the right choice at the right time.thanks for the info on wake and bc,we don’t get to read much about these schools.what they do with the talent they have is amazing.especially wake,a small private school.

Roswell Ed,

It amazes me that with ALL the SEC coverage that the ajc bombards its readers with, that you’d get your fill of making pointless comments over there. This is a blog with an ACC subject. That’s A….C….C, you’d think those letters would have been easy enough for an SEC fan to understand, since they are 2 of the first 3 letters in the alphabet, you know the alphabet, that thing you learned the first day of college at Auburn. I know you failed out and all, but c’mon man, it’s the first and third letters of the alphabet, surely it registered in your mind “ACC, me not like ACC, me stare at some uther words, ugh.”

Good blog. Please keep us informed on spring practice and if the public is welcome to watch in regards to the Jackets. I’m hoping/thinking that an option component with the ability to pass is going to blow the fans and other teams impressions of what the triple option is. People forget that John Dewberry, Shawn Jones, Joe Hamilton and George Godsey did a lot of damage on rollouts and bootlegs with options of running or passing involved. Hopefully this offense can get into the top 50 in the country relatively quick.

My comments were never about the ACC.

They were about those 4 schools

I now admit that my 1st post was wrong.

There are 5 people that care about Tech and 2 about WF in a city of 5 mil. So nationwide there are probably a couple of hundred or so.

AU and Tubs have 1 of the best football player grad rates of any school.

I got accepted to Tech but Asian women and Agnes Scott bull d** ain’t my bag baby.

Nice catch on “occasions to every rule!” That was classic. Now who is supposed to be the dumb redneck? I am guessing Neck doesn’t in any way relate to rich upper class elite either. By the way, since when are Clemson, NC State, Va Tech, GT, Maryland, FSU, & Miami considered rich upper class elite schools? I’ll give you Duke, UVA, and Wake. MAYbe UNC and BC.
