Some early impressions of Spring Ball

Spring practice is almost in full swing. We’re just 48 hours from Selection Sunday in basketball. What better time than for another “Free-Wheeling” Friday. I’ll be at the SEC Tournament all day blogging. If you have time, jump over there for some hoops.

Here are a few impressions of spring practice to date:

1. Brinkley won’t do much this spring: I talked to some South Carolina people at the Georgia Dome yesterday and they tell me that linebacker Jasper Brinkley (from Thomson) is up to about 270 and that it is all muscle. Brinkley’s injury last season began the downhill slide of the South Carolina defense. With Ellis Johnson coming in at DC, don’t expect Jasper to do a whole this spring. Everybody knows what he can do. In a related matter, cornerback Carlos Thomas, who has 20 starts over the past three seasons, is really in coach Steve Spurrier’s doghouse. He has been suspended and may have a tough time getting back in the good graces of the HBC.

2. McElwain preaches toughness: Jim McElwain, the new Alabama offensive coordinator, is trying to bring a new sense of toughness to that unit. Some people may wonder about the wisdom of that. I don’t. Writer Rick Bragg, who now teaches at Alabama, said that every game in the SEC “is like a knife fight in a ditch.” If you want to win in the fourth quarter in this league, it’s usually about physical and mental toughness and not talent. Talent puts you in position to win in the SEC. But physical and mental toughness under pressure actually wins the game. When David Cutcliffe came back to Tennessee two years ago, he told me his biggest challenge was not X’s and O’s, but instilling a high level of discipline and toughness into his unit. That is what McElwain is trying to do.

3. Auburn’s two-headed quarterback: I am intrigued with what Auburn may do at the quarterback position under new OC Tony Franklin. It’s clear that the spread, run by sophomore Kodi Burns, is going to be the base offense. And Burns, I should mention, can throw it a little better than most folks think. But I believe Franklin hopes that Chris Todd, the JUCO transfer who started at Texas Tech, could really put a wrinkle into things that will make it hard for defenses to prepare. Under the base offense, the defense gets spread horizontally. Then Todd could come in and get the ball down the field and spread the defense vertically. That’s a lot of work in one week for an opposing defensive coordinator.

4. Mallett will sit in 2008: Former Michigan quarterback Ryan Mallett is asking the NCAA to waive its transfer rule in order to be eligible this season at Arkansas. I reached out to some Arkansas folks and they said they don’t know when the ruling will come down. Mallett will not get a waiver. The NCAA does sometimes waive the rule that requires a player to sit out a year after transferring to a Division I-A school. Tennessee basketball player Tyler Smith got a waiver because his father had cancer. Mallett wants a waiver because his new coach, Rich Rodriguez, runs a different offensive system than the one Mallett enjoys. Not quite the same thing.

5. Get Berry the ball: I read where Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer is finally going to consider getting cornerback Eric Berry involved in the offense. The Vols have to do this and here’s why. Berry is Tennessee’s version of Champ Bailey, the Georgia cornerback who is among the most gifted athletes to ever play for the Bulldogs. Georgia found different ways to get the ball into Bailey’s hands on offense and he won a couple of games for Jim Donnan on his athletic ability alone. Defenses were terrified every time Bailey came onto the field for offense and had to spend a lot of time planning for the handful of plays in which he would be involved. A lot of times Bailey would just be a decoy that would allow Georgia to run something else. Berry is just too talented to be on one side of the ball. Is there a risk of injury? Of course. But if Berry wants to do it, that would be a risk worth taking.

Yea, everytime UT tries a package with a Berry type player or when they sneak the QB wide they end up looking like a bunch of idiots. I have never seen UT run a successful trick play (other than the ole stndby halfback pass). IMHO they shot themselves in the foot on a couple of occassions last year and lost momentum by not executing the play. UT plays best when they just line up and whip the other teams a* simply by being the better team.

Its Carlos THOMAS that is in Spurriers doghouse, not Thompson. Can’t imagine why a football player from College Park would be getting in trouble. Word is, he punched Captain Munnerlyn (our good CB). Great athlete, but probably a good thing some young guys get more playing time. If we had depth last year we wouldn’t have lost to Clemson in the final seconds.

Nobody mentioned trick plays but you…The only gimmick these two bring are agility, speed. Get the ball in their hands and the D will be grabbing air…

78 Dawg

Take this stuff pretty seriously, don’t you..? Loserville does have a pretty Crystal Football on display. Does your school..? Maybe this year, maybe next…

Zeb

We lost two senior tight ends in Brad Cottom and Chris Brown. Cottom’s younger brother, Jeff, and a fellow named Luke Stocker will probably share duty there. I believe all WR’s return. and watch out for Gerald Jones. He’s an athlete. Played a little QB option-run and WR. Did some clutch stuff his Freshman year for us. Junior center Josh McNeil is missing spring ball due to knee surgery. RB Daryl Vereen was a key Fr RS last year. With Foster, Hardesty, Creer and Vereen, we look to be 4 deep at TB at this time. Lincoln will return as PK. He was redshirted his Fr year…I hated to see LB Mayo opt out, but the man earned his degree. I wish him the best in the NFL. LB will have depth in 2008. Secondary returns alot. Hefney is trying out for pros. Antonio Gaines quailified for a MRS and will return for a Senior season, probably at a safety position…I recall looking out over the field at the SECCG ( Get that, 78 Dawg ) and seeing 4 freshman playing in the secondary in the fourth quarter when the game hadn’t been decided. CPF had to have alot of confidence in those guys to put them out there in that game. Gotta feel good about that…To me, the D line will be the biggest question mark. Yeah, bigger than replacing Erik Ainge. Sombody to assume Colquitt’s punting role until he gets back from his 5 game LOA due to his 200th DUI…All in all, I place us about 3rd in the East at this point…BUT…

Shelby Foote, God rest his soul, said no Seargent in the Army of Northern Virginia thought that hill could be taken. But they all lined up to do their duty. Lee made the mistake, not Longstreet. Of course if Jeb Stuart had been able to bust through Custer in the rear of Cemetary Ridge, the havoc he would have caused may have allowed Pickett’s-Pettigrew’s charge to succeed. Also the ammo for Porter Alexander’s guns was from a different plant than normal, had not been tested and the gunners were overshooting their marks. No softening of the defenders but causing heck in the aid stations. Now today’s history lesson is over.

The ACC, I know they play basketball. Do they actually have football teams? If a Georgia Tech player scores a touchdown and there is no one to see it, does anyone hear the band?

General, I think you may have a good coach in the future, whenever Fulmer steps down.. your new OC, coach Clawson. I read some some positive things about him. Hopefully, he’ll struggle against mighty Willie.

IMO, It’ll be a different outlook this season when Tenn comes to town. Richt will definitely not let our guys get physically whupped again like we did in K-town. I think that was the biggest turn around in the second half of the season, IMO, after that horrific loss. Richt said after the game, “that will not ever happen again”. As we all know we had a good run after the shellacking effort against Vandy. So, I don’t know if that was a good thing we got our teeth kicked in by Tenn, I guess it was a rude awakening and we needed it. Kind of like Cher said in that movie-Moonstruck or whatever, when she slapped the lady on the face and said, “hey, snap out of it!”

Ok, i babbled on long enough.

btw, lets go hoop dawgs, beat the cats.

Not a lot of controversy here…except the requisite Tech fan crowing about how Tech is somehow going to beat Georgia for the first time this decade. Note to King Bee: Paul Johnson’s a good coach, it’s true. But you guys lost 17 starters from a mediocre team. No system is going to fix that overnight. With the talent that’s present in Athens, I don’t see Tech winning against Georgia for at least the next two years. And scoring 35 points? Maybe over a three-year span, but not in one game.

Maybe the Gamecocks should move Jasper Brinkley to DE. At that size, he’d be a run-stopper for a run-stop deficient defense. I have to think that at 270 lbs. he’d have a hard time covering 4.3 receivers in the flats.

Eric Berry’s a great player. I hate the fact that he’s in orange. Word on the street is that Berry chose UT because of wardrobe simplicity—he could wear his Vols uniform to the game on Saturday, to go hunting on Sunday and to pick up trash by the roadside on Monday (when he’s got the inevitable UT “community service” duty).

Maybe we could give Colquitt a beer or two on Saturday and see if he punts better while intoxicated. Who knows? If he’s inebriated most of the time (as seems to be the case), making him stop drinking for game day may just give him the shakes. There are laws against driving drunk; there are no laws against punting drunk. Hire a driver and let’s see if he can punt it 60 yards!

General: take a day trip to Little St. Simons Island. You have to get there by ferry, but the food and the atmosphere are out of this world. Talk about off the beaten path….

War Eagle, if that’s the biggest problem Coach Richt faces in this next season, WHAT ARE WE GOING TO DO WITH ALL THESE RUNNING BACKS, then Auburn has some serious issues, and UGA does NOT.

Of course, the observations from Spring Practice so far are not that no one has a thing to say about UGA, nor that UGA has too many running backs and nothing at any other position to speak about either.

It is that UGA is one of the Top Football Programs in America, returns our team nearly totally intact, and has a mostly Junior-laden Football Starting Roster this up-coming season who have taken the majority of the snaps coming in with yet another Top 5 Coach Richt Recruiting Class.

We have so many top linebackers, we can’t get them on the field; our fullbacks are world-beaters and we are stacked at tailback as well; our offensive line is rock-solid and adds all kinds of depth for fights of who gets more snaps the next many seasons as far as the eye can see; our defensive line is deep, big, talented and fighting each other for playing time; our secondary is probably our deepest and strongest position; we return our punter, have great return men long on talent and who have experience, and our kicker will be chosen among the incumbent Punter who walked-on here as the heir-apparent at kicker, the son of a College and Pro Football Hall of Fame kicker, and the number 1 kicker in America.

We play the Number 1 Strength of Schedule in the nation, just announced for this up-coming football season.

All these riches for the Number 2 Team in America, who have a higher APR than Georgia Tech’s Football Players, just won our 9th bowl game of the last 11 years, all 11 in a row Ranked in the AP Poll, and who have Won 2 of 3 BCS Bowl Games just the last 6 years.

And, the football “guru” of this newspaper in discussing Spring Football, cannot think of 1 single solitary point to discuss for over one-third of a million UGA Alumni Readers of his rag ?

That’s horrifyingly biased against UGA, shocking, disgusting, outrageous, scandalous, appalling and inexcusable Tony Blowhart.

Tony- Ive been a big fan of your coverage for a long time. I grew up in Columbus GA, a rather unique spot for college football. AU and UGA are both in my blood, and they both played each other there in Memorial Stadium for years. I even went to both schools, though my true love are the Tigers. Is it possible to like two SEC teams? Anyway, I think you are right about AU’s offense. If they lock onto a QB, Tony Franklin could really spell trouble for SEC. And Paul Rhodes was an excellent DC pickup. Georgia will be fantastic next year, and I hope it will be AU and UGA in a rematch in Atlanta for all the SEC marbles. Quick question: when can the SEC SECede and just crown its champion king of the world?

Nice hot line from Hawaii to Lee County, Ga… Could Dawgs win SEC in BASKETBALL, looking good so far? If they beat Miss State, Tenn wore Ark down , UGA has a good chance to grab Razorbacks..who would ever believed this story?

Dawgs did it again. 2 wins in one day. Prolly the best #6 seed team ever to make it to the final. According to coach Felton, it’s the first time Georgia ever made it this far in 11 years. Not bad, considering we’re not too deep at all. I think his job is saved. I think Evans should let Felton coach for at least two more years or however how long he has left in his contract. He just needs to recruit better within the state and get better talent overall. Good job dawgs! Rest up and get ready for 2morrow again. btw, I think we have better luck when Sundiata fouls out late in the game.. : )

SOS really matters at seasons’s END..Not Pre-preseason. Even a birdbrain like yourself knows that. Give me final Sagarin Ratings for 2008 while your at it. Give me your sewing circle’s take on RPI’s…Give me liberty, or give me death, foo….

Actually, my wife is on a business trip. I’m sponging as a tag-a-long…Besides the chow part, I’m looking for a couple of good run venues, about 45 minutes apeice… Little St. Simons fit the bill, or do I run the beach..?

Congrats to the Razorpigs…Hope we see you again at the NCAA’s…

Congrats also to Dawgs Men’s BB. Felton said, ‘Let’s play two’…

SAMOAN,nobody runs on their wrist, unless they are employed by the circus.old chris must have done very”little”running on anything at all.the scoop from chip, and others,is that he tends to be a”little”lazy.i will give the young man credit,a year of hard work on the treadmill and in the weight room has brought him down to a chic 340 lbs.he also dropped his 40 to a 5.0——minutes.GENERAL,in the words of maxwell smart”would you believe—-hop?”.thanks to coach felton for a gutsy and well prepared team.i have never been more proud of any bunch of dawgs!

Wow AMAZING!…. Dawgs did it! 4 wins in a row. I guess Felton’s job is secure for another year or so.

Woodbury buried the Pigs with four 3s from downtown. Wow, awesome game.

Good job guys! Good luck in the tournament.

General…..on your trip to St. Simons; head up the road about 20 minutes to Darien and a seafood restaurant called Pelican Point. You can thank me later.
