ACC Spring Ball: Five burning questions
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Here are my five burning questions about the ACC as we head into Spring practice. What are yours?
1. Can Clemson find some Hogs? With running backs James Davis (1,064 yards) and C.J. Spiller (768 yards) both coming back along with quarterback Cullen Harper (27 TD) and receiver Aaron Kelly (88 catches), the Tigers should have the best offense in the ACC. But the Tigers have to replace both offensive tackles and one of the guards in order for these talented people to do their thing.
2. How long will it take for Georgia Tech to find a quarterback? Josh Nesbitt, the sophomore from Greene County, and Auburn transfer Calvin Booker both have a lot of talent. But the learning curve in Paul Johnson’s offense is really steep. The decision making and execution in this offense is more precise than anything these two guys have ever seen. Chances are that neither will win the job outright during spring practice and that the competition will continue into August.
3. Will David Cutcliffe have an immediate impact at Duke? Quarterback Thaddeus Lewis has started for two seasons and in 2007 threw for 2,430 yards and 21 touchdowns. But now Lewis is going to get a crash course on how to REALLY play quarterback from Cutcliffe, who begins with seven starters back on offense and 10 on defense. Cutcliffe has already put his offensive linemen on a diet in order to be leaner and quicker. It usually takes a quarterback an entire season just to grasp Cutcliffe’s system. It will be interesting to see if Lewis is a quick study.
4. Can Christian Ponder beat out Drew Weatherford?: I have it on pretty good authority that Jimbo Fisher, Florida State’s offensive coordinator and head coach in waiting, is intrigued by what Ponder, a redshirt sophomore, can do. Ponder only played in one game last season (a 40-21 loss to Virginia Tech), where he made some big plays but also made a bunch of mistakes. The competition between Ponder and senior Drew Weatherford (2,049 yards, 9 TD in 2007) will be interesting.
5. Is Robert Marve the answer at Miami? For a place known as Quarterback U., there hasn’t been a lot of good play at the position lately. Marve will get a chance to change that his spring. As a high school senior in 2006 he was Mr. Florida Football but a traffic accident and the resulting surgeries kept him off the field as a true freshman in 2007. Coach Randy Shannon says he won’t name a starting quarterback until this summer after his highly rated recruiting class arrives in Coral Gables. If Miami is going to be relevant again, somebody has to step up and play quarterback at a high level.
ACC SPRING PRACTICE STARTING DATES

First!!
Question #6: What will Ga Tech’s defense look like without Tenuta?
Question #7: Will Ga Tech’s offense under PJ look more like the wishbone of the 70’s or the current spread (ala Missouri, West Va, etc.)?

WHO CARES! College football will always be a JOKE of a sport until they come up with a way to determine a TRUE national champion! hmm…that playoff thing seems to work pretty good…
Until all you fools stop supporting the sport things will never change!
And dont say im just another p** UGA fan, yea i like UGA football, but im a bigger fan of GT basketball and football!!
Any tech fans here really think a 1 loss GT team would of gotten in over Ohio State or LSU last year??
keep dreaming!
I guess it will take your own team getting screwed over for some common sense to kick in huh? Boise State…the REAL undefeated champs of 06! Remember Florida did loose a game! (since the regular season supposidly means so much to all you BSC supporters)

I bet Nesbitt and Booker both pick it up well (and quickly) especially Nesbitt. This offense was meant for him and Dwyer. Hopefully the defense will fly under the radar and be great! Defense needs to be as good or better to really make PJ’s system work best.

I think your #1 question should be: When will college football mean anything!! Im sorry but ANY sport where a team can go undefeated and still have NO shot at a title…is a JOKE!!

I’m concerned who will start at linebacker at Georgia Tech? How well will the offensive line perform? Will the receivers improve? We lost a great punter. Who will be tough enough to play for Coach Johnson.

FSU will still struggle. Duke will win at least 1 ACC game. Miami, after a year of Shannon at the helm, will be back to 9 wins. Tech will be in every game, but 7 wins will be the outcome. Clemson will win 8 games, well b/c Clemson always wins about 8 games. Davis and Spiller could be the best backfield in the nation though.

UGA from Snellville: im a fan of both UGA and GT, ive had friends and family go to both schools. Ive been a Tech fan for longer because i grew up watching Dennis Scott, Brian Oliver and Kenny Anderson take GT to the final 4. Not to mention i closely followed GT when they won the football national title. Im a big fan of GT hoops / and UGA football. And although i like GT football, i never really cared for UGA basketball. Make sense to ya? over your head yet?
When they play in football i root for whoever has a better chance at a national title. When they play in basketball im a HARDCORE GT hoops fan!!
Why can someone not like 2 teams? i can shure as hell give u a list of teams i HATE! USC (souther cal), Florida, FSU, Miami, VT, Ohio State,Michigan, and many others!
Im just a guy who thinks college football is a joke because they dont have a true champ year in and year out. I think some of the Tech football teams of Joe Hamilton could of competed for a National Title, just like i think UGA football had a right to a playoff spot when they had David Green, and Pollard the DT.
Especially when UGA had that black QB the year after Green left i thought that loss with the backup QB at florida should of been overlooked and UGA should of been given a title shot!
College football is a JOKE…and the joke is on us..the fans who are dumb enough to support it and watch all the meaningless bowl games.

This greatest Highlight thing on ESPN is a joke. How can a highlight from what boils down to another meaningless college football bowl game be considered the “greatest highlight”, over all the game 7 jump shots, homeruns, strikeouts??
Boise state won… good i was glad, i was rooting for the underdogs to mess up the BSC more than it already was.
But they won……???
What did they win!? a national title? NO! A chance to go to a title game? NO!
It was just another lame episode of college footballs whogivesasht.com bowls.

I could see where Nesbitt wouldn’t just be the default starter, given his youth. But I fail to see how Calvin Booker is his main competition. No offense meant to Booker who seemed to play okay in the bowl game, albeit with some luck and help from DJ Donley on at least one play. But he’s not the athletic style QB that CPJ needs to run this offense. I don’t recall Booker running a single time for any gain. In fact, I just looked it up. He had one carry for 5 yards against Samford. In the other two games he got into, UGA & Fresno, he had negative yardage rushing. Nesbitt had positive (and often significant) yardage in all his games except against Clemson (he took his first snap, fumbled and then was basically done for the game). So I feel safe in saying that Booker is not a real contender for this job. Nesbitt’s top competition is likely one of the incoming freshmen who have triple option experience, like Jaybo Shaw or Tevin Washington, even if they don’t get here until the summer.

1-clemson is strong, and could dominate the acc,but they lost to the better teams on their schedule last year.tommy bowden has to do a better job of coaching,he has no excuses with this team.2-i think tech’s biggest problem will be a simple lack of enough warm bodies.tech will go into spring practice with only 58 scholarship players, the two deeps on o and d will require 44 players, that leaves only 14 reserves.some of the 14 will be punters, pks,ls,and other specialist.who will make up the scout team?can johnson install a new system without going full speed in practice?can he risk injury by going full speed in practice?he will have twenty freshmen coming in for fall, but coachs use spring drills to establish their starters.it will be intresting!3-what constitutes an immediate impact at duke?three wins?good luck tonight techies, play smart bball and you can upset duke.4-i have not been impressed with drew, barring injury i think ponder will start this fall.fsu had a great recruiting class.now jimbo can clean house, like shannon at miami.it will cost him some games early, but will pay off in the long run.5-i like what shannon has done at the u.he set some standards for behavior with his players and got rid of the bad apples that were spoiling the barrell.as he said, the days of”thug u”are over.now can he set some standards of PERFORMANCE?if he does, miami is back!

Oldgold, please inform me, since you are so enlightened, which five (5) ACC teams finished in the top 20 last year. I am assuming that you are talking about football, since this is a football column. By my count, two (2), not five (5) ACC teams finished in the top 20. But you went to the “smart” school, so please explain your fuzzy math.

Wow, nice one WOLFPACK TODD. Trust me. NO ONE else has any questions about NC State. Unless the question is “can they hold their own against Duke”
Gotta think Clemson is the class of this conference. They signed 3 high quality O-linemen, most notable McClain out of Alabama. And you know you’re on a gravy train with biscuit wheels when Jamie Harper will be your 3rd RB (230 lbs. 4.4 4O yd dash).
Tech will struggle this year, but I think they’ll have something decent in 2/3 years if PJ can recruit to his liking.
For FSU, is E.J. Manuel gonna be given a shot to start? Never heard of this Ponder cat but E.J. has all the tools (Unfortunately, so did Xavier Lee)
And I think Miami will be very tough with all the defensive players they signed. I think a lot of them will see a LOT of PT and be very productive, especially those OLB’s and Marcus Forston in the middle.
In the end, it’s hard to see Clemson losing any games, with the most difficult game likely their home opener. An ACC SEC showdown. That game will set the tone for the ENTIRE ACC all season. If Clemson loses, the ACC will get no respect for the rest of the year. IMO

The U will get back to the business of football. Randy Shannon has put a wall around the South Florida tri-county area which is the most fertile ground for high school football. The 2008 recruiting class is nasty. The ‘Canes will be competing for the ACC title this coming season. If they find a QB (Robert Marve or Jacory Harris) who can make the gimme completions and not throw the dumb interceptions, they will win 9 games. In Randy Shannon, we trust. UUUUUUUUUUUUU Know!

BCS: man i can tell your half retarded just from the name you chose to post under. In sports i believe on any given day ANY team can win. Thats why you play the games, and thats why the idea of “voting” 2 teams to go to the title game is just nuts when year in and year out theres argument about who deserves to be in it.
So tell me this mr. Bcs, who did u “vote” on to go to the superbowl this past year? or did your mighty computer calculate it up for ya??
I bet your stupid computer didnt think NY would be the champs huh?? Who would of “voted” the Cardinals into the World Series a few years back??

My burning question - Can Paul Johnson develop a passing game at GT that can complete at least 55% of the passing attempts? Or 60% would be even better. I expect he’ll have all other phases in order.
By reservoirDAWG

The same was being asked of the DAWGS last year about linemen. It worked out. I think it takes Johnson a couple years to get the players he needs. I think Cutcliffe is a good enough coach to make an immediate impact, but with the talent at Duke I don’t see them winning more than 2-3 games. As for FSU, they have the talent and I think Jimbo will get it done. I haven’t paid attention to Miami as of late.

Nc State fan, Glennon will not see the field this year, if he does, you should be worried, very thin. I’m the biggest FSU fan, but Drew stinks. And everyone makes excuses for him, Dickey ruined him, but he with X-Lee, he just stunk. LOL. Coach Cut is a great offensive mind, hopefully they can get some def to help. Ga Tech start Nesbitt, if you are running any kind of spread he would be awesome in it. To bad your previous coach played it so close to the vest. And The U fans, hate your team but respect them. You can’t depend on one recruiting class and say you’re back. Will struggle this year also. Clemson is loaded. Hopefully Tommy feels bad for beating up on dad and gives us this year. LOL. Look out for Ricky Sapp, will be next 1 round pick on their d-line.

Clemson for sure has the most talent in the conference. The question is: Can T.Bowden get them to play up to potential consistently ? It hasn’t happened yet. Maybe this is the year.
You’re right about the learning curve for the QB spot at Tech. These guys are going to be asked to read and react very quickly. There also needs to be at least two guys who can get it done, because an injury to #1 would disrupt everything if the #2 guy isn’t ready to go. Hopefully the timing will be fine tuned by September. I know Coach Johnson will have these guys going through a gazillion reps, so I have confidence the timing will be there. It will have to become second nature to them.

At least Tech now has a coach that can teach a QB. Under Chan Gailey, Tech wasted some potentially good QB’s due to Chan’s inability to coach. I understand that QB Manley left via graduation with Bennett. What is the story on the other 3 QB’s besides Nesbitt and Booker? Since a ton of the heavy lifting will be from the RB’s - how many running backs does Tech have currently on team? With recruits added, where will the number be in the fall? It’s a long season and numbers of bodies is important.

desertdawg: “We all love college football and the Bowl Games”
NO desert rat not everyone loves all the pointless bowl games. (who cares about 2 6-6 teams playing in a quarter packed stadium with nothing on the line??) Makes about as much sence as the Braves and Mets playing a exhibition game after the playoffs had been decided last year.
Its just that college football is a popular sport, and the crap system is what weve been stuck with. Any TRUE sports fan knows that the way college football is ran is a joke.
And idiots like you that run around blind like nothing is wrong are the reason why things havent changed yet Why would any GT fan NOT support a 8 or 16 team playoff?? you really think a 1 loss GT team would get in the title game over a 1 loss Ohio State, or 2 loss USC, or a 1 loss Texas, or a 1 loss SEC team?? They would be in the same boat VT was last year coming from the ACC.
Even a undefeated GT team would get screwed over for a 1 loss SEC team or OSU or USC!!

Bravesfan79, I agree with you 100% that it is absurd that there is no D1 football playoff, but I don’t agree with your name calling. You don’t have to get in the gutter to make a point, especially when your point is a strong one.

Bob: Baaahahahahahahahahaha! Oh god, you’re killing me!!! Hey idiot, do you know why no NFL teams run the option? It’s because good defensive speed completely negates it!! Name ONE SINGLE TEAM that Georgia Southern or Navy beat that had superior defensive speed. What’s that? You can’t? I’m telling you, the Bees may never beat Georgia again. PJ was the best hire possible for you nerds.

Bob: That has nothing to do with the price of tea in China. You’re so stupid it’s painful. Oh, turn your on spell check. It’s spelled Mark “Richt.” Oh, and the next time you valet my car, please don’t steal my change. I need it to give to the homeless people whenever I come to a UGA/GT game at the Joke by Coke.

The Truth you are a hypocritical idiot. How dare you tell others to not “troll” this board when you are on the DawgBlawg all the time.

All teams Navy beats have superior defensive speed. The option negates team speed (to some extent) because of execution. Hard to get 11 defenders (especially some of the rocks that get recruited) to execute their assignment correctly on 90% of the plays - too much fun to chase the football. Even with team speed, proper angles to the ball carriers/potential ball carriers are crucial - if the defender is too far out of position a 4.0 forty time won’t do him any good.
The keys will be getting GA Tech to execute the offense correctly and good team defense. We (Navy) get beat because we can’t stop anyone.

BravesFan79:
These guys who are getting p** with what you’re saying are part of the problem. But I do agree, you don’t need to mud sling. I’m in Denver now and there’s no way in h3ll the Colorado Rockies would have ben picked by ANYONE to make it to the World Series last year. BUT the playoffs made it happen. Until we have a playoff system in Div-I football, we have nothing more than BOWL GAME WINNERS - No National Champion. I’m getting less interested ecery year. I wish fans would just stop going to and paying for games for ONE SEASON - then we’d have a playoff.

Hey BravesFan: The last D1 team to be a part of the National Championship was Tech in 1990 (UGA was 1980). That season we were undefeated and had to share a team with one loss and one tie plus five downs (two losses) plus questionable calls in another game, Colorado. Nebraska, a powerhouse of that era, was blown out by Tech and Osborne stated that Tech was better than Colorado. We deserved the AP title too and would have liked a shot at Colorado. We appreciate fair play and playoffs could offer that (although not absolute fairness by any stretch).
But to lament that UGA deserved a title shot without winning their conference is a bit of a stretch regardless of how strong they played down the stretch. I’m not attacking UGA or you their fan, but it just sounds like sour grapes.

GT76- How can you say this offense is “meant for Dwyer”. Jon is a prototypical NFL back who would benefit by getting the ball 7 yds deep and finding daylight. I predict he transfers after spring ball (along with 2 other skill offensive players).
