SEC Spring Ball: Five burning questions

Since Auburn and Mississippi State have already started practice, it’s not too early to talk spring football in the SEC. In fact, here are the five burning questions I have about the SEC as spring ball begins:

1. Can Georgia handle the hype? The Bulldogs will be in everybody’s top five in preseason and will be No. 1 on a lot of ballots come this summer. It’s been a long time since Georgia has been the SEC favorite and a preseason contender for the national championship. I wouldn’t expect to see players like QB Matthew Stafford and RB Knowshown Moreno getting a lot of work in spring practice. Everybody knows that they can do. Bottom line: Life is different when the the whole world is telling you how good your are. I’m anxious to see how Georgia handles it in the spring and summer.

2. Can Alabama find some receivers? The Crimson Tide returns nine starters on offense but receivers DJ Hall and Keith Brown are gone as new coordinator Jim McElwain installs a new offense. The replacements may have to come from the talented freshman class. One of those freshmen, Chris Jackson of McDonough (Henry County), graduated from high school early and is already enrolled at Alabama. Julio Jones, the nation’s best high school receiver, will arrive in August.

3. Will Steve Spurrier finally find his quarterback in Stephen Garcia? The head ball coach hung in there with Blake Mitchell, Chris Smelly and Tommy Beecher last season but he is still looking for somebody who can run his offense the way HE wants it run. This spring he’ll find out if Garcia is the guy. Garcia, a Florida kid who enrolled at South Carolina in January of 2007, might have played last season as a true freshman but he was arrested twice in a 16-day period in February and March. Spurrier has said publicly that one more strike and Garcia is out. Still, he’s the most talented quarterback the Gamecocks have.

4. What will Tennessee’s offense look like? Dave Clawson, the former head coach at Richmond, is the new offensive coordinator and it looks like junior Jonathon Crompton will replace Erik Ainge at quarterback. Clawson’s offenses put up some pretty impressive numbers at Richmond but consider this: With four out of five starters returning on the offensive line and with RB Arian Foster coming back to take a shot at the Tennessee career rushing record, don’t expect anything fancy. Foster, who had his knee scoped in January, may not do a whole lot in spring. He needs 654 yards to break the Tennessee record of 3,087 yards set by Travis Henry.

5. Who will be the Auburn quarterback? You’d have to say that Kodi Burns has a leg up on the job of running the spread offense of new coordinator Tony Franklin. Burns scored the winning touchdown in overtime in the win over Clemson in the Chick-fil-A Bowl. But keep an eye on junior college transfer Chris Todd. Todd started his career at Texas Tech and then transferred to a junior college when he lost the quarterback job to Graham Harrell. Todd is a better passer than Burns and has known Franklin and the principles of this offense since he was in high school. When spring practice started last Sunday Franklin said the quarterback race was wide open.

So what did I leave out? What’s your burning question going into spring practice?

Tomorrow we’ll look at the ACC.

1.i don’t see the dogs as being over confident, this team has a chip on it’s shoulder and an attitude.the coachs have these guys believing they should have been in the nc game and that they got no respect from the media last year.i was at the sugar bowl and at jacksonville and that defense played with more intensity than any team i have seen since old erk’s junkyard dawgs.they beat people up!i am sure richt and co are reminding them of what happened in the usc and ut games and what it cost them.2-i look for big changes at bama.saban knows that some of his men quit on him last year.having played the game,at a much lower level of course,i can tell you that coachs hate a quitter!some of the tide players will be transfering after spring practice.bama may start freshmen at some wr spots.3-spurrier will find a qb,either garcia will get with the program or get gone.spurrier would not have put up with this kid at uf,i have no doubt that the he is out of there if he screws up again.the problem at carolina will be the collapse of the defense after brantly went down.their d went from tough to almost non-existant.4-fulmer has his back against the wall, again.he has never been beloved by many of the ut faithful, just tolerated because he won.he needs to win and win big!i am not sure he has the horses to do it.5-i was not impressed with cox last year.i know tubby didn’t want to start a freshman at qb,no coach does, but i think burns should have gotten more pt.i look for big improvement from the qbs at au next year.what will hurt au is losing muschamp,he kept their d fired up,and their d won their games!

I keep having this recurring nightmare. I dream that Chan Gailey is back as coach at Tech. It is the worst nightmare in history. Luckily, I woke up and it was just a bad dream. Halleeedamloooyah….the worst coach in the history of college football is GONE!!

Another burning SEC question would be if Florida will be able to find a reliable running back this spring. Keshtan Moore was decent last year, but he fumbled the ball too often in big games. USC transfer Emmanuel Moody will battle Mon Williams for the starting job. If the Gators can find a good RB for the offense, that will open up more things for Tebow and Harvin.

UGA will be ranked high and they deserve it. The question there is whether or not Richt will be able to steer the team clear of the letdowns they typically have each year. (For example, see USC and UT last year.)

‘Bama will be better this year, but they’re probably still a year or two away from winning the west. Saban still has to sort through the team he inherited and his recruits to find a winning combination.

With a new OC and a new DC, Auburn is basically a wild card. Could be great; could be middle of pack. We’ll just have to wait and see.

One other burning question: how well does Tim Tebow follow up his Heisman season?

Just wondering if Foster is going after T. Henry’s fatherhood record of 9 illigit children with 9 different mothers??? That T is a T-Cat!!! Mama’s don’t let your babies grow up to be Vols!!! Oh and BTW Tony regarding yesterday’s piece do you think Fulmer was giving Colquitt a pass per every Colquitt that has punted at UT? I don’t think there have been more than five? Interesting math!!!

February 26, 2008 10:38 AM | Link to this

quaildawg,i read some ut blogs a couple of days ago.some of the posts from ut fans stated that colquitt’s family had made a million dollar donation to ut.the majority of them thought he got favorable treatment because of it and did not like it at all.ut fans are divided, but i think fulmer is rapidly losing support.of course most fans don’t post on blogs, only a few that feel strongly about their team,so i don’t think we can read the feelings of the average fan from a blog.most fans just want to win.

I like the DAWGS chances this year. The coaches need to keep them hungry and humble after last years second half. As for the rest of the SEC, it should be an interesting season.

Will the UT Vowels have enough players left to field a team for spring practice?

By Tide's going out

February 26, 2008 11:10 AM | Link to this

I read some interesting posts the other day on a Tide and UT website about Saban dismissing several 3rd string scholarship players to make room for his large 33 man class. That is pretty crappy to recruit a young kid and tell him you want him to play for Bama then yank his education and football dreams away because you were not a Saban baby.

By ohyesohmymy

February 26, 2008 11:12 AM | Link to this

I think they still have something like 85 guys on scholarship. But it won’t matter, UGA will beat them real bad.

By baloney

February 26, 2008 11:19 AM | Link to this

I’m not aware of any contribution to UT by the Colquitts.Must remember that some of Britton Colquitt’s alkihall issues were BEFORE he enrolled at UT. Also, remember that Fulmer did kick off a highly rated TE (Lee Smith) 2 years ago after he signed but before spring practice began. Also, I’m not sure that there is division at UT. I think when it comes down to it many fans at UT or anywhere else would love to have a loyal coach to their school as Fulmer is. And by the way he has won a few games. And yes he has beat many good teams on the road and at home. Is the program as strong as it was in the late 90’s and early 2000’s? Probably not, but then again he has beat Fl,Bama, and UGA (2 times). Not bad for a coach and a program on the downturn.

i don’t know how much money,if any,was donated to ut by colquitt’s family, that is why i pointed out that i was repeating what had been posted on the ut blogs.i also pointed out that what we read on blogs is not the opinion of the average fan.a few nuts on the uga blogs were calling for richt, cwm, and others to be fired after uga’s loss to ut last year.i do think the natives are restless in the volunteer state.there were too many well written, reasonable, posts questiong fulmer, from people that were obviously not”nuts”.

I don’t believe the DAWGS will be over confident. Coach Richt and rest of the coaches will make sure and keep them planted. What happened the 1st part of last season is way in the past (but they will keep in their minds to make sure it doesn’t happen again). Tough schedule but they can handle it. BULLDAWG NATION you gotta BELIEVE. We’re taking the DAWG pound to South Beach. TB see ya in Miami. GOOOO DAWGS — WOOF WOOF WOOF !!!!!

tides going out,i think saban is angry about the way his team finished the year after a start that showed promise.when some players stop playing hard it’s time for them to go.i don’t blame saban, and don’t be suprised if some leave that were not third stringers.remember that richt handed a few their walking papers after the 2006 season.i think saban will work the he11 out of his team this spring, and anyone that can’t take the heat will be free to get out of the kitchen.again,i don’t blame saban,if chan had cleaned house after his team quit in that blue field bowl a few years ago he might still be coaching tech.

The DAWGS are not overconfidient, just read above! duh! Georgia’s 2008 team may be the best, most talented college football has ever seen. We beat the gayturds and urban liar ONE year in a row! The last 2 years we are 1-1 against FL, SC, Kentucy and Vandy, which shows you how tough the sec is when the greatest team of all time is 500 in the divison, so get back to flippin burgers.

UGA Fans - you had a very good team last year. It’s probably going to be an even better team this coming year. Perhaps even a NC contender. Please, please, please stop whining about how your team should have been in the NC game last year. You didn’t take care of business on your side of the conference. You didn’t earn the right to play in your conference championship. You certainly had no right to say you “should have been” in the NC game. As for the Sugar Bowl victory, let’s be honest about it. UGA knocked the snot out of them just like every other team in the SEC (almost every other team) would have. You represented the conference very well just like LSU did the year before against Notre Dame. Show a little more class, dignity, and respect next time, accept whatever trophy you earn, take it even higher the next year.

The media has there own agenda, never forget THAT!

By baloney

February 26, 2008 1:36 PM | Link to this

Holding call? I’m not sure which that was. But since he was a freshman it’s likely he was getting whipped thus resorting to holding.I don’t recall the rain in Athens the year before but it may have been warmer for that time of year. I think UT got lucky both years. I also think that anytime someone other than UGA wins the SEC it is a dwon year for the conference. If UGA wins it it is the strongest conference in the nation. Herschel Walker baby.

I think UGA CAN handle the early attention, but have to play Spurrier U., early again. SC will be one of the most improved teams in the SEC & returns 18 starters & 6 injured former starters. (Brinkly is a freaking beast) I think UGA is talented enough to make it thru with one loss & will play for the mnc.

Keith - Thank you for satying it like it is. I never expected the poor sportsmanship from UGA fans to last as long as it did. LSU was in the SAME spot last year and even had the invitation to the Rose Bowl on the condition that USC took care of business in their last game and didn’t so LSU had to “settle” on the Sugar Bowl and basted Notre Dame all over the field even though ND fans talked too big for their britches. The difference is LSU fans got over it and enjoyed our victory and didn’t continue to whine even though the press kept saying LSU was the best team in the S.E.C. even though Florida went to the NC. We felt w should have played in the s.E.C. Championship game because our division record was the same as Arkansas and we beat them but that’s not how it went. We were dissapointed in not going to the Rose Bowl, got over it, loved playing in New Orleans as always and UGA fans need to get over it too. As for the officials, LSU has plenty of rightful reason to complain about bad calls or no calls as most S.E.C. teams that are winning do and most of the time they are game changing calls/non-calls but until the S.E.C. as the balls to do something about it, nothing will change. I know UGA will have a good team this year and I’d rather them start as #1 because that spot is very hard to hang onto all season!

I am by no means a UT fan, but UGA fans, seriously? UT cheated to win? They’ve blown you out two years in a row.

Big games this year: UF vs. UGA (very likely will decide the east), AU vs. LSU (likely will decide the west), LSU vs. UGA, AU vs. UGA.

I think all 4 of those teams are BCS contenders, with UF and UGA having the best chance to compete for the MNC. However, I think AU and LSU could easily sneak into the BCS picture and could very possibly end up SEC champs. I think UGA has a clear cut championship-caliber team, but I think the SEC will prove too much. I doubt they’ll be far off, but I just don’t think it’ll happen.

Marie, The arguement is very much still valid. The NFL has this thing called the playoffs that allow any team that makes it to the playoffs a chance to become world champs. If there was a playoff system for us (college fans) last year, UGA would have had a chance to get to the championship. We don’t have such a system in place. UGA didn’t earn the right to play in the CC or the NC. Get over it and hope your team takes care of business next time.
