Dogs are preseason No. 1

TONY BARNHART’S EARLY TOP 25 FOR 2008

(Last season’s record in parentheses)

1. Georgia (Last season: 11-2) The Dogs return 17 starters and will add redshirt RB Caleb King (below) and incoming freshman A.J. Green, one of the top high school receivers in the country. The road schedule looks really tough. Make your plans for Jacksonville (vs. Florida) now.

2. USC (11-2) Arkansas transfer Mitch Mustain will compete with Mark Sanchez to replace John David Booty at quarterback. Either one will do the job well, and the Trojans will just keep rolling.

3. Ohio State (11-1 entering championship game) Only two seniors were in the starting lineup for Monday night’s BCS championship game with LSU. The Buckeyes again will be the class of the Big Ten in 2008.

4. Florida (9-4) The Gators return two of the best offensive players in college football, Heisman Trophy winner QB Tim Tebow and WR Percy Harvin. Next season they will finally have a big-time running back in USC transfer Emmanuel Moody.

5. Missouri (12-2) If RB Tony Temple is granted another year of eligibility due to a medical hardship, he’ll join QB Chase Daniel and WR Jeremy Maclin to form the nation’s best offense.

6. West Virginia (11-2) Pat White (right) will return at quarterback, but we’re not so sure about RB Steve Slaton. But if he comes back the Mountaineers will be favored to win the Big East again under new coach Bill Stewart.

7. LSU (11-2 entering championship game) The Tigers lose the most successful senior class in school history, but a ton of great players return. Among them will be Ryan Perrilloux, who will finally get his turn to be the full-time QB.

8. Illinois (9-4) The Illini got hammered in the Rose Bowl, but they return QB Juice Williams and WR Arrelious Benn. Ron Zook will miss RB Rashard Mendenhall, who decided to turn pro.

9. Texas (10-3) Coach Mack Brown found out late in the season that he needed to start giving his team some tough love. With QB Colt McCoy returning, look for the Longhorns to play Missouri for the Big 12 title.

10. Clemson (9-4) If everybody returns, Clemson could win the ACC championship next season. QB Cullen Harper of Alpharetta will be a senior and could have running backs James Davis and C.J.Spiller again. The defense returns nine starters.

11. Kansas (12-1) Quarterback Todd Reesing (3,486 yards, 33 TDs) will return for his junior season, but the defense will be without CB Aqib Talib, who is turning pro.

12. Auburn (9-4) Tommy Tuberville’s change in offense will pay dividends in 2008 as QB Kodi Burns becomes a star. The Tigers will have to replace defensive coordinator Will Muschamp, who left for Texas.

13. Oklahoma (11-3) It will not be a fun offseason in Norman after the Sooners got embarrassed (48-28) in the Fiesta Bowl. But there is reason for optimism. QB Sam Bradford (3,121 yards, 36 TDs) returns, as does RB DeMarco Murray (764 yards, 13 TDs). The Sooners will miss RB Allen Patrick (1,009 yards).

14. Arizona State (10-3) With QB Rudy Carpenter (3,202 yards passing) coming back, the Sun Devils will be the second-best team in the Pac-10.

15. Virginia Tech (11-3) Both quarterbacks, Tyrod Taylor and Sean Glennon, plus running back Branden Ore return for the ACC champions. The Hokies will miss linebackers Vince Hall and Xavier Adibi.

16. BYU (11-2) With sophomore QB Max Hall (3,848 yards, 26 TDs) returning next season, the Cougars will again be the class of the Mountain West.

17. Tennessee (10-4) The Volunteers have to find a new quarterback and replace most of their offensive staff, but there are a lot of good young players on this team, including sophomore DB Eric Berry.

18. Wisconsin (9-4) Sophomore RB P.J. Hill will be a Heisman Trophy candidate as the Badgers challenge Ohio State and Illinois in the Big Ten.

19. Wake Forest (9-4) The Deacons won nine games this season after winning the ACC championship in 2006. QB Riley Skinner (2,204 yards, 12 TDs) returns.

20. Texas Tech (9-4) QB Graham Harrell (5,705 yards, 48 TDs) returns for his senior season with a chance to break every major passing record at Texas Tech. Harrell will have the nation’s best young receiver, rising sophomore Michael Crabtree, again as his primary target.

21. Penn State (9-4) The Nittany Lions have to replace QB Anthony Morelli and RB Rodney Kinlaw, but Joe Paterno is ready to return for his 43rd season as head coach.

22. Michigan (9-4) Rich Rodriguez takes over a program that loses a bunch of good seniors, but his offense will be hard to handle for the rest of the Big Ten. By the end of the 2008 season, the Wolverines will be pretty competitive.

23. Boise State (10-3) With Hawaii coach June Jones gone to SMU, look for Boise State to return as the WAC’s best program. TB Ian Johnson returns for his senior season, but the Broncos have another great back in Jeremy Avery.

24. Connecticut (9-4) With sophomore RB Andre Dixon (828 yards rushing) and junior QB Tyler Lorenzen (2,367 yards, 13 TDs) both returning, the Huskies could challenge West Virginia in the Big East.

25. Oregon State (9-4) The Beavers return a pair of talented quarterbacks in Sean Canfield (1,661 yards) and Lyle Moevao (876), who will fight it out in the spring for the starting job. But Oregon State will miss RB Yvenson Bernard (1,214 rushing yards, 13 TDs).

I sure hope Georgia is ranked number one at least at the end of the season when we play them. I would love nothing better than to upset them and their national title hopes.

Good List! Don’t see Missouri staying that high very long. If a team makes it out of that SEC schedule with 1 loss, then they deserve to be playing for the NC. I looked at Georgia’s schedule…BRUTAL. Away games with LSU, Florida, Auburn, Kentucky, Arizona St., and South Carolina (all teams who were top 10 in the nation at one time this year). Should be an exciting year in the SEC.

It’s a little know NCAA bi-law that when you lose your 4th straight BCS game, you are automatically suspended from the top 25 for two games.

By me

January 7, 2008 3:55 PM | Link to this

Still having the love fest for Bobby, Tony. FSU is going to have over 20 players suspended for at least two games after the cheating scandal. The surprise team in 2008 will be Oklahoma State which returns a good offense with an improving defense. The other team will be Miami with the number one recruiting class, including 6 players from the number one high school football team in the country. The question is can Shannon learn from his coaching mistakes of the past year?

By DogsRUs

January 7, 2008 3:55 PM | Link to this

I a big Dawg fan, and would love them to prove me wrong, but #1 pre-season? Not yet. Also, while Florida may have a heck of an offense (though I’m still not convinced Teebow is superman - both Georgia and Michigan exposed him, IMO) will they have a defense? And, yeah, Oklahoma has got to be in there somewhere. Connecticut?

That said, if this last season proved anything it proved that polls much before the sixth game of the season are a joke.

Tony a little wishful thinking huh in putting the Dawgs as the pre-season # 1. While I believe they will be in the top 5 I would be greatly surprised to see them as # 1. Anyway pre-season ranking other than being in the top 5 doesn’t really mean that much its the last poll that counts and here’s for he Dawgs being # 1 after the BCS Championship next January in Miami.

If Ohio State wins tonight they will be the 2008 preseason #1. If they don’t USC will take the top spot. It won’t last long though. While the Dawgs are playing teams like Georgia Southern and Central Michigan to start the season in 08, USC and Ohio State play each the second game of the season. Whoever wins that game will be Number ONE. If you want to be somebody you have to play somebody.

By FLA DAWG

January 7, 2008 3:57 PM | Link to this

I hope The Dawgs are preseason #1. Do you think the BCS will give them two chances to retake that spot during the season if they lose two games like LSU?

Glad to see you have Mizzou in the top 5. I have been singing their praises all year. They are the real deal.

As far as Ohio State is concerned, if they play the same schedule as this year then yeah, they’ll be up there with one or two losses!

By John

January 7, 2008 4:00 PM | Link to this

Surprise, surprise, surprise. The AJC love fest with the Dawgs continues. I’m sure if you did this same column in LA the Trojans would be #1. In Ohio the Buckeyes would be #1, and so on. UGA should and will be very good in 2008. But to be #1 from start to finish is very difficult now days, especially in the SEC. Don’t get to excited yet, it’s a long way until the championship game in 2009 and a lot could happen with and “to” the Dawgs between now and then.

This is going to be one of the most fun football seasons ever in 08, watching all the buildup and hype over a doggie team that couldn’t even win their own SEC division get beat like a bad habit next year.

We’ve all seen and heard it all before with the THUGA fans in the offseason having multiple orgasms while they dream of a NC next season….only to laugh hysterically at them as they lose, and lose….and lose.

Clemson at no. 10????? I believe it when I see it. The Tigers has been trying to turn the corner to the football super powers the last 2 or 3 seasons. One of my favorite activities is reading “I can’t wait until we beat UGA next year” from the blind loyalists from Tech. Next year never seems to come—and it won’t come next year, either. Paul Johnson is installing the triple option (even after he said he wouldn’t) and this year’s recruiting class is not looking good at all. He’s lost three players and he’s only picked up a QB who had to de-commit from MTSU first. One O-lineman, zero defensive ends and no defensive tackles. No player rated higher than 3 stars. But, keep dreaming about how you’re coming into Sanford Stadium next year and knocking off the Dogs!

Tony, did this come from just your opinion or did you base it on your conversations with the other writers during your dinner? (Hope it was a great one.)

Also, noting that the Dawgs have 5 opponents in your top 16 (four of the five in “away” games), 2 in your top 10 and likely will be playing the past two National Champions. Yikes! The only way we run that schedule and end in the top 2 will be to avoid injuries and stupid behavior in the off-season. We can & will do it though. Go Dawgs!

Well Ed I am pretty sure your brain is not the part that earned you the nickname “Big”. With ASU, AL, TN, LSU, FL, & AU on the schedule along with S Carolina, Tech, and KY it is quite likely the DAWGS will have the toughest schedule in the country next year. On the other hand, assuming they still plan to play next year after tonights beat down, OSU is padded up with such quality opponents as Youngstown State, Ohio, Troy (who might beat them), MN, Purdue, and Nortwestern assuring a quality rank in the mid 50’s. USC has an OK schedule and I expect we could well see them in Miami next year.

By not having OU in the Top 25, shows his agenda.

As for the rest of you Muttlanders, what do the following have in common?

2000: Alabama

2001: Georgia Tech

2003: Auburn

2004: Muttland

Personally, I’d replace Mizzou with Oklahoma….I look @ Mizzou as a 1 hit wonder….Glad to see you still think my noles have a chance…08 is definately the year Bowden has been waiting for, NO EXCUSES next year. The noles has their easiest non-conference schedule (almost SEC like) in the past few years. With another year of seasoning under the coaches they now have, things are definately looking up. I personally see FSU as a top 5 team next year, not necessarily #1 material. As much as it pains me to say this, I see year 08 as the year of the Gator…..

Tony,

Not ready to see Dawgs #1 pre-season. I think 3 or 4 more accurate. I don’t think Michigan exposed Tebow. I think Michigan exposed a Gator defense that seemed to get worse as the season rolled on. If they don’t fix their defensive problems they are going to be hurting again this year.

I’ll pick on my own school: Auburn at #12? We have a new and basically unproven Offensive Coordinator, an as yet to be named Defensive Coordinator and a barely tested Kodi Burns at quarterback. I’d say it’s a wee bit early to be predicting the kind of success that goes with a #12 rank.

Not too sure about UGa at #1 either. They’re good; top 5 to be sure, but don’t read too much into the blowout of Hawaii.

Only about 8 months until the 2008 season kicks off…

Hey Big Ed: You shouldn’t criticize UGA’s non-conference schedule. Have you looked at Ohio State’s this year? And after USC and Ohio State play each other next year when will they play Arizona State, Alabama, LSU, Florida, Tenn. & Auburn? They need to stroll through that line-up and finish undefeated. Oh yeah, USC does play Arizona State. For your information we are somebody because we do play somebody. And which of these two teams won the last six straight and beat four nationally ranked teams? I hear silence.

Oklahoma needs to earn a ranking, they have not won a bowl game in 7 years! I am glad to see the Dawgs palying Arizona State this year it should help because ASU have a good team. UGA needs to kick but in thier division which they should win!

The Ohio State U is always the best!

P.S. No more talk about who is playing the best at the end of the year! USC played a home game and the team had to travel over 3,000. Let’s not give them too much credit they still lost to Arizona!

Playing 5 of the top 16, you wont win a national chamionship, sorry, get over it now, DOGS will be VERY good next season maybe even GREAT at times but that schedule they play is the TOUGHEST i have ever seen. I have a hard time seeing the dogs manuever through it with less than 3 losses. Thats schedule will takes it toll and god forbid we are #1 and then absolutly everyone has a great week of practice because they all want to know you off. Wins next year almost certainly Georgia Southern, Central Michigan, Kentucky, Vandy, Georgia Tech. Should win, South Carolina, Tennessee, Alabama. Toss up, Florida, LSU, Auburn, Arizona St. At best of the toss up, you win 3. And the shoulds you probably lose one of them too.

However, if UGA goes undefeated into COFH, it will add a new wrinkle to COFH. Y’all take care of your business (Vols, Chickens) and we’ll take care of ours (UVA, BC).

Clemson? Clempsun belongs in the top 25 about as much as Tech, and for the same reasons.

FYI OU was listed as 13. This may be a little low, but they were included. This ranking doesn’t even count, only the last one before the bowls start and the final one count.

Therefore, don’t pay much attention to the details of rank, but rather use it as a marker for which teams to watch next season. With this in mind and UGA schedule, they are a team to watch and could have the biggest impact (other than how each team performs with respect to their schedule) on the overall final rankings. UGA is arguably the number one team to watch as they will have a huge impact on the final outcome. UGA plays Florida, LSU, Auburn and Tenn. All in the top 20 teams to watch. All said and done the SEC again looks to pretty formidable with 5 teams in the top 20. Other SEC teams may be viable top 20 teams as well.

Any SEC team has a pretty tough schedule! I hope the first prediction is accurate for the final outcome. GO DAWGS!!! and the rest of SEC!

BTW writer, For Oncst and For All: We are Carolina and are USC. If you can spell, USC spells University of South Carolina. Has nothing to with So Cal. Who cares about all time record? I think a strong case can be made for Georgia to open the season at #1. However, I feel that their schedule is much too difficult to remain there all season. They have more talent and depth than I can remember in my 18 years of following them. They may lose, but will be embarrassed by no one. If they do lose one, maybe two early (and to the right teams), they should have no trouble working their way back up the ladder. They definitely have the ability to win the SEC and National Championship games and I wish them and all of their fans the best of luck.

J Moore: Look at see who we are playing before you write next time. We are playing Arizona St. next year. And trying to say we don’t play anyone hard is just plain retarded. After LSU, UF, Tenn, Alabama, and the rest of the SEC teams (we’re not lucky enough to get to play DUKE) we have every right to have a few easy games. But maybe your stupid point might work: go a head and schedule Southern Cal and the team that wins would be the NATIONAL CHAMPS!

The New York and LA press will never let this happen, I believe you to be correct however. One must simply realize the hatred of all things South won’t allow this. We are no better than an inevitable demographic in this country.USC and Notre Dame are media darlings, I will put twenty dollars on this, Notre Dame will be in the top next year and if they win a game or two to begin the year they’ll bump them right to the top.

Tebow will be healthy next year when we play UGA. Only reason you won this year. Superman wins his second Heisman in 08.

No, the reason UGA won this year was UF’s porous defense. Michigan could have scored 50 if not for Mike Hart’s two fumbles on the goal line. UGA could have matched any UF score that day in Jax.

I guess Tebow wasn’t healthy when UF played Auburn, LSU, and Michigan either?

Cullen Harpers. Willy Korn is a lot better than Joe Cox will ever be and may be better than Stafford. Clemson will have the #1 RB Tandem in the nation in James Davis and CJ Spiller. I think the list was modified because when it first went up, it did not include OK. Anyway, there is NO WAY Kansas and USC will jump the Dawgs in the poll this year unless it is complete political BS. That probably means they will. Anyway, if the Dawgs can avoid major injuries, which is a big if, we can run that schedule and no one would ever be able to criticize us the way they have OSU this year.

It really is a great time to be a Dawg, and I’m proud of our team & university.

It doesn’t matter where you put us in the preseason, as long as it is in the top 5. Say what you will, the Dawgs should run the table and win the SEC, which will get them in the national title game against the winner of the USC-Ohio State game (probably USC).

And for you Tech and South Carolina fans, get real! The Jackets lose 17 starters from a mediocre team that Georgia beat by two TDs, and USC returns a bunch of stiffs from a 6-6 ballclub coached by a washed-up has-been head coach. Had Georgia played South Carolina at the end of the season, they would have beaten the “Cocks by 30. You can believe the Dawgs will be ready for them next season. It won’t even be close.

I’m as disappointed as any Sooner fan about the result of the bowl game but give me a break. Oklahoma is loaded with young talent and when motivated, they are as good as any team in the country. Texas to play Missouri for the Big 12? Texas is losing some big time talent. (Charles, Okam, Finley, Lokey, etc.) Bradford was a freshman not a senior. Murray was the Sooners’ most explosive back and the offensive line returns. Oklahoma might have the best defensive line in the country next year. Will they choke again, maybe, but they will at least be in hunt, better than 13th and better than anyone in the Big 12 - again.

Rev. Reicht will never coach a number one team. He recruits thugs and ends up “punishing” them for breaking rules. Whether GA is top 5, top 25, or 105 it will ALWAYS be the team with the least class. Tony:

How can tOSU be ranked so high in your preseason rankings simply because they win the weak BigLess Ten Conference? Until Tressel came along, it has basically been a 2 team conference (tOSU and MeatChicken), but with Tressel going 6-1 against MeatChicken, tOSU has had a clear path to the BigLess Ten title. Winning a weak conference with no competition and no conference championship game should not result in such a high national ranking…. after all, we have already seen the folly of ranking a 1 loss BigLess Ten champ tOSU #1 in the BCS. Conference and schedule strength matter when determining strength of teams!!

Buckeyes blitzed in barrage by The SEC again, this time a Bayou Blitzkrieg causing this “BCS Bowl Game” to be over early too. The Big 10 Chumpion fell to 0-9 vs. The SEC in Bowl Games All-Time. Jim Tressel has yet to beat an SEC team in a Bowl Game. This Bayou Blow-Out was over early. Where was the Big 10 Dominance supposedly over The SEC ? I missed that. The SEC went 7-2 in Bowl Games this year after gaining 6 Bowl Wins last year – both highs in Bowl Victories of any conference last season and again this season.

The Big 10 once again dropped BOTH of its BCS Bowl Games 0-2.

The Big 10 was 3-5 in bowl games for a .375 average in bowl games this season.

The Big 10 had a Losing Record to The SEC in Bowl Games again this season 1-2.

The Big 10’s 2nd best highest ranked team, Illinois dropped to Number 20 in the Final AP Poll, worse than Hawaii for God’s sake.

Only the ACC was lousier than the Big 10 in bowl games this season at 2-6. The PAC-10 won only 4 Bowl Games and the Big XII won only 5 bowl games and it was the Big XII – two games back of The SEC in Bowl Wins 2007-2008 – who came in 2nd this Bowl Season.

2nd to The SEC at 7-2 in Bowl Games.

The Object of the Season is to get to the Greatest Possible Bowl Game and to Win it. The SEC Won Both of The SEC BCS Bowl Games with both National Champion LSU and Runner-up Georgia gaining huge dominating performances for The SEC in BCS Bowl Games.

The ACC Won no BCS Bowl Games. The Big XII won only 1 BCS Bowl Game and it over this hapless ACC Conference. The PAC-10 Won only 1 BCS Bowl Game and it by a team who played in fact the Official NCAA Strength of Schedule No. 80 Southern California. The Big East won only 1 BCS Bowl Game and it over CHOKElahoma. The SEC Won., by direct comparison thereto, Both of its BCS Bowl Games in resounding fashion by both LSU and Georgia. The Big 10 LOST BOTH of its BCS Both Games.

BCS Bowl Games :

2-0 SEC 0-2 Big 10 0-1 ACC 0-1 WAC 1-1 Big XII 1-0 PAC-10 1-0 Big East

SEC Teams who Won their Bowl Games : LSU, Georgia, Tennessee, Auburn, Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi State.

Ohio State fielded no player on its entire roster 2007-2008 who is under 4.4 in the 40-yard dash according to Scout.com. LSU sacked Ohio State 5 times tonight. 5 times. LSU’s quarterback in this game, who did not even play in The SEC Championship Game, threw 4 touchdowns against what was the No. 1 Total Defense and No. 1 Scoring Defense of Ohio State. But, this No. 1 Ohio State Defense was ONLY the No. 1 Defense because it played including LSU the No. 39 Strength of Schedule also according to the NCAA.

The SEC finished 1-2 in the Final AP Poll. This marks the 1st time this has happened for any Conference in 34 years.

Final AP Poll :

.1. LSU.

. .2. UGA.

. .12. Tennessee.

. .13. Florida.

.15. Auburn.

.

5 of the Top 15 in the Final AP Poll are SEC Teams this season.

SEC 5 of Top 15.

No. 1 and No. 2 are SEC. Who is better ? We will never know.

And, that is because The SEC considers as a tie-breaker for Co-SEC East Champions this year No. 2 Georgia and No. 12 Tennessee (10 places worse ranked in the Polls), head-to-head where the vols blew UGA out at the vols’ home field as their only win over a Final AP Poll Top 25 team except for No. 24 Wisconsin the vols beat, while UGA beat No. 13 Florida, No. 15 Auburn and No. 19 Hawaii.

Tony Blowhardt, by the way, KANSAS ended up No. 7 in the Final AP Poll, while as I told you UGA ended up No. 2 - NOT KANSAS.

No wonder you don’t have a vote in the AP Poll any more Tony Barnhardt.

That’s Five (5) places better for the home team here Georgia Bulldogs than your vote for No. 1 Kansas. And, UGA got 3 times as many No. 1 votes as Kansas did.

Try putting a SPIN on that, Tony Barnhardt.

Unfortunately the schedule will probably rule Georgia out of being #1 at the end of next season. OSU will go undefeated, and USC probably will unless they’re hit by injuries. That means Georgia has to face ASU away, LSU away, Auburn away, UT, Carolina, Florida, GT etc without a blemish.

Hope the No. 1 carries through to the finish.

Not bad predictions. It’s hard to prognosticate this early, but a more thorough pre-preseason ranking would need to break down each team by complete units - OL, DL, LBs, and secondary, not just what skill players are returning on offense.

That said, UGA at no. 1 is a good choice to start the season - solid and maturing at every position. Florida’s defense has yet to prove itself (though I expect the hated Gators to improve there). Replacing a QB always poses a question even for USC, and OSU’s poor showing last night won’t help their case. How intact will the Sooners be? Were they a young team this year? And wow, will the ACC ever become the power conference it was promised to be?

It’s interesting that you placed Ohio State in such a lofty position.

They reached the title game by playing against a weak schedule, losing at home to Illinois and opening with 4 of the weakest teams in the country.

If you watched the Fiesta Bowl, you know that West Virginia would have hung 50 on Ohio State, and they have virtually everyone coming back. At the very least, they should have been accorded a higher ranking.

I,m as big a DAWG fan as they come, but UGA is not #1 now or next year. The defense played ONE decent game all year (vs. a second tier Hawaii team) and we’re all of a sudden praising UGA and WM. Where was this intensity, emotion, and good game planning the rest of the season? No, the defense is too wishy-washy, Stafford just way too inconsistent and not yet living up to his lofty billing, and the 2008 schedule is murder. A hard dose of reality is needed— a very good team in ‘08 but no SEC or NC for UGA in ‘08.

The only ranking that matters is #1. Being #2 or #3 is ok, but still sucks, especially because if Richt had taken care of business they’d have been in that NC game. They should have been there, so once again Richt came up way short. 10 years from now no one except the UGA fans are going to remember what UGA’s rank was this year. This is the third Dawg team since Richt was hired that should have been in the NC game and didn’t get there because of Richt’s boneheaded leadership.

Still this was the first year Richt actually conducted himself like a complete HC, so maybe, just maybe, if he can keep Martinez’s asinine playcalling to a minimum, they might get into the NC game next year. But I still have serious doubts that Richt, even in his eighth season, has matured enough to get them there. We’ll see.

Nevertheless, he did turn them around this year, or at least Cassen Jackson-Garrison did, and Richt should forward at least half his bonus money to that guy. If he doesn’t drop the ball on Georgia’s 7 yard line with only 3 minutes left in the Vandy game (he had made the first down, Vandy could have easily run the clock out while taking the lead to end the game), then this would have been a much different season. Could you imagine the howling of Dawg Nation had they lost a second year in a row to Vandy right after the humiliation in Knoxville? They would have been demanding Richt’s head on a platter. Richt would have been under the gun for the next two weeks going into the UF game and totally distracted trying to save his own a*. There would have probably been no celebrations in Jacksonville, no blackout against Auburn, and certainly no Sugar Bowl. Therefore, the player of the year for Georgia, and the one Richt and all Dawg fans everywhere should be deifying this season is none other than Vandy’s Jackson-Garrison. He was without question Georgia’s savior this season.

Oklahoma 13th? Are you joking? They return their entire O-Line, a breakthrough quarterback, all but 1 wideout and a huge crew on defense including All-American Curtis Lofton… they hammered Texas who loses more next year, destroyed Missouri TWICE and won their 2nd Big XII title in a row. Yet you have MU and UT ranked above them. OU no doubt threw in a clunker in the bowl game… but you shouldn’t let one game cloud your judgement. OU is loaded next year and will be a top 5 team. Do your research.

Oklahoma was not in the original list the writer put out. He revised it after so many people noticed the obvious oversight. Don’t you all just sit in front of your computer and read everything? If you did you would know.

Southern Cal received 45 of 60 first place votes in the USATODAY pre-season poll in August 07 and was projected to win the national title.

Regardless of my politics, the #1 preseason ranking is a curse for almost everyone who manages to obtain it. UGA had an awesome year minus a couple of hiccups and that dagblameit running back is going to be HEdoubleL next year. If this year is any indication of the strength of teams in the SEC, winning the SEC will pretty much guarantee a trip to the title game. Maybe UGA should start their quest for another national title with Division and SEC Championships and ignore preseason rankings. The rest of us with any sense do.

SoFlaDawg… kiss my grits… the truth hurts, but better to confront one’s own weaknesses and fix them than to blithely follow the mob of giddy drunken fans as you so obviously do… as long as Martinez is running the defense and Richt is meddling with the offense, then there is a huge risk of UGA losing to far inferior teams (for example in ‘07: losing to USC & UT, and nearly losing to Vandy, Troy, and UK), no matter how much talent the Dawgs have.

Well Im a big UGA fan,but I dont know if they will run the table. If they were anywhere except the ACC they could. I mean who do USC play? UCLA n Stanford. Who do Ohio State play? Only tough game is the overrated Wolvereins. Team that got beat at home by Appalachian State, WOW! UGA n many more would go undefeated every year if they werent in the SEC. Its a reason why they went 6-2 in Bowl games!

By Gspot

January 8, 2008 2:25 PM | Link to this

JDW; nice job on the comparison with OSU’s schedule. For the SEC team, you use all of their tough in-conference games only, not referring to ANY of their patsy non conference games, while with OSU, you conveniently list the weakest conference teams and DON’T mention that they scheduled USC for one of their out of conference games. While I can agree that the SEC is clearly better this year and last (and maybe next), it would still be nice to see you use just a LITTLE intelligence when trying to make comparisons. So, to clarify, OSU plays Michigan (who beat a tier one SEC team), USC, Wisconsin (went to the wire with TN), Penn State (bowl winner). Clearly not as tough as the SEC schedule, but not the cakewalk that YOU tried to make it out to be.

By Court

Willy Korn is a lot better than Joe Cox will ever be and may be better than Stafford. Clemson will have the #1 RB Tandem in the nation in James Davis and CJ Spiller. As a Tennessee fan, I have no problem with Tony ranking UGA #1 in preseason ‘08 based upon their late season surge & their retuning roster.I also believe the Gators will be good, although many questions on defense for ‘08.However, after watching last night’s return trip to the ‘ole woodshed by OSU & considering the Vol’s decent SEC Championship performance vs. the now national champions, I believe Tenn. will be pretty darn good next year.Could 4-6 additional SEC teams have battled Buckeyes toe-to-toe last night? I think so. Vols return 16-17 starters next year.Word also is that former starting safety Demetrius Morley will be eligible in ‘08 as well as 2 excellent defensive transfers(one Gerald Warren who was all-ACC as a freshman). the Vols should be pretty darn salty, much improved on defense. And concerning the Q.B. position; I’m not worried at all. If anything, we have very good Q.B.s waiting in the wings, namely Jon Crompton & Nick Stevens, but particularly B.J.Coleman. Watch him. He is the real deal. The bottom, line, the Vols will be good, possibly very good. All 3 RB’s return, all recievers, most O line guys. Better than UGA or FL ??? Not at the moment. But VERY competitive in SEC & certainly better than Barnhart’s # 17 ranking. The SEC East is the AFC South of college football.

Dear jeff,

Oklahoma doesn’t “suddenly” suck, they have sucked for years. How many years you may query? Exactly one less year than that mediocre Coach Bob Stoops has been coaching them. He won a National Championship on another coach’s “gravy year” and then has wizzed away some decent teams since then. The Big 12 is in a decade long slide and fans can only hope it has hit bottom and is bouncing back. Name one Big 12 team this bowl season that beat a decent opponent. VT sucked, Arkansas was completely in shambles with all that is going on there, and West Virginia completely destroyed OU, which is not unusual in the bobg Stoop(id)s era.

oh, and I am a life long Sooner and big 12 fan, I’m just not a brain dead fan. The SEC weas certainly the class of the field this year. No other conference even came in a close second. The big 10 (or little 11 as I like to call them) has been in about a three year slide and the ACC is in free fall. The big Easy, I mean Big East, is actually becoming a decent conference and the PAC 10, while competitive is still filled with weak sister teams.

When they took the strength of schedule out of the equation football went back down hill. Now it’s all about manufactured stats.

By Jim

OSU keeps getting high rankings, yet year after year they get exposed by the SEC. I don’t get it…

It is time for a playoff. Did you know that Div 1AA, which has 1 more team than Div 1A, has had a 16 team playoff for 28 years. Every other significant college and pro sport has a playoff. But, no, say the Big10 and Pac10 and Rose Bowl people. It won’t work here. It is time for the tail to stop wagging the dog…

By clay2

January 8, 2008 6:03 PM | Link to this

I’m glad that Jeff can find that there is a number between 12 and 14…..

I’ve got no problem with UGA being ranked #1 PRESEASON. Look, the SEC is the best conference in the nation and UGA was playing about as good as anyone at the end of the year. PLEASE do not forget though that things do happen every year. Georgia lost to a crappy South Carolina team and a subpar Tennessee team THIS SEASON. If they are going to contend for the NC next year, they cannot lose to teams that combined to lose NINE games. Not to forget that one of those teams toasted UGA by 21 points. And I hate Tennessee, so writing that last sentence hurts me more than you know.

LSU was clearly the best team in the conference and would have beaten UGA in New Orleans last night. Next season, it will be a whole new ballgame.

UGA - win the East, win the SEC game, then worry about winning the BCS.

I agree that UGA will be ranked pre-season #1 and rightly so. They have the the best running backs in college football, the winniest coach in the SEC and best record over the last 11 years, finished in the top 10 almost every year since 2000, and have a great quarterback, wide receivers, and defense.

LSU did not play them in 2007 and have historically lost to them when they did, and USC turned down the option to play them in the Rose Bowl because they would have lost to them.

UGA is much better than most people realize; however, they will now have their chance to show the entire nation in 2009.

Georgia loses less talent than USC, LSU and Ohio State, so the Bulldogs are ranked No. 1 in the way-too-early 2008 preseason college football poll.

I did not realize today was April Fool’s Day. Surely you jest about UGA a preseason #1.You know as well as I that the DAWGS are the perrenial bridesmaids and NEVER the bride. Every year they scream about all their talent, yet they stub their big toe somewhere along the way. This year they couldn’t beat a 6-6 South Carolina team. But, I guess they might as well enjoy being #1 now, because a 9-3 team (Fla. Aub. LSU or their annual upset special) awaits them in ‘08. So dream on DAWG fans while you can. That is the only place you will EVER be #1… IN YOUR DREAMS.

I wish Michael Adams and all of the other university presidents would get out of the entertainment business and get back into the education business. Hey, I love football - but when a university throws more emphasis on teaching one tight end to catch a pass than training ten teachers or ten nurses, there is a problem. I live in rural Ga and Adams and UGa (and Ga. Tech and Ga. State and …) have absolutely no impact on addressing a poor educational system, poor health and lack of industry - jobs…….in our area. Please don’t tell me athletics helps a university - as athletic programs at large monolithic universities have grown larger and more powerful, class sizes, number of foreign speaking teachers, etc have also grown larger. Use to be you’d take a class and the teacher would know your name and you wouldn’t want to disappoint them so you’d work hard in class…..now you take a class from a computer and 3/4 of the class cheats cause no is watching them and no one cares……..go BCS! It represents the corruption of our education system. From banks that feed off student debt to real estate developers that make a killing on student housing to local business that love to see a student take 6 years to graduate because they are working 30 hrs/wk for low wages and no benefits!

Each team will give the Dawgs their best shot next year anyway with all the hype so we might as well embrace the #1 ranking. Bring on the defending Natn’l champs!! Ask the Gaytors how that worked out for them this year.

Considering UGA has the WORST athletic graduation rate in the SEC, maybe the school better worry about that instead of this stupid ranking.

Don’t worry, there’s a lot of time between now and the first game for the jigdawgs to mess around and get arrested, expelled or kicked off the team. They have a great history for getting into trouble with alcohol, drugs, sex, traffic offenses, and academics. Oh, I forgot, academics don’t count until after footbal season is over. Sorry for the misconception.

HEY DOGMAN — what are you smoking redneck? Before you can win a National Championship, you must first win the SEC — heck, you guys did not even win the SEC East — finishing 2nd in your division and THIRD in the SEC. Come on man — get freaking real with your homer a$$.

One last thing DOGMAN — UGA is a good school, but obviously you are part of the trailer park alumni as evidenced by not knowing how to turn off CAP LOCK on your freaking computer.

I am trying to understand Mark Richt and I can’t. At the beginning of 2007 everybody knew the rules , the BCS etc. The regular season ended and Ohio State and LSU were #1 and #2. There is not a single argument that Georgia can make in order to rank ahead of LSU yet we know Richt voted Georgia ahead of LSU. LSU has a better record. LSU has a better record against common opponents. LSU beat more and higher ranked teams. LSU has lost 2 games both in 3OT and Georgia got blown away by UT and lost to SC in regulation. LSU is SEC Champ and Georgia is not(Did not get to the CS game - has not won the East). I could go on and on. Coach Richt, you embarrassed us and the SEC. You should not have a vote as a coach.

Georgia is a top 5 team maybe even top 3 but, no. 1 ??. Florida is not a top 5 team, they should be somewhere between Oregon state and Texas Tech. but the real thing is osu ?? 0-9 against sec teams in bowl games they should not be in the top ten let alone the top 3. and with my last words i say GO DOGS!!

God loves LSU.

Do I really need to explain?

The Pope and Les Miles wear their hats the same way - high and proud.

Root against LSU and you are rooting against God, the USA, Ford trucks, and that Indian who used to cry when he saw a polluted river on TV.

Harvard On the Bayou - oppose us and feel His wrath!

You guys slay me!!! USC, you love them so much and something should be done the way PETE steals people. You have an ARKANSAS QB the cry baby, coach NUTT won’t let me run the team mama!!! and the MEX guy ! YOU could put the two together and what they come out with could not touch the LSU QB, RYAN P. who will be pushed by a couple of good ones behind him, LSU is returning almost ATT OF THE THAT SCOREING MACHING THAT THE “WIZARD” Gary HAS TO WORK WITH AND SEVENTEEN TOP NOTCH “reds” THAT IS READY TO PLAY, PLUS PEOPLE ARE CALLING LES WANTING TO COME AND PLAY FOR HIM. i BELIEVE THAT YOU MIGHT PLACE USCw AT #7 AND YOU WILL BE CLOSER TORIGHT, georgia is good, but they will not win the sec!!! LSU will repeat, and they should have one the year that they beat themselves against FLORIDA, THE WORST GAME THAT jmarcus had, AND THE QB RYAN PELL WILL BE BETTER THAN JMARCUS!!! WE WILL HAVE A BETTER DEF UNIT ALSO!!! maranatha!!! laus deo!!!
