Goodbye Sugar, Hello BCS championship
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
New Orleans-Today is transition day in New Orleans. The Sugar Bowl crowd will get out of town early and the LSU and Ohio State fans will begin to come in and start getting ready for the BCS championship game Monday night.
The teams arrive here and those of us in the media have been invited to meet with Ohio State coach Jim Tressel and LSU coach Les Miles at their respective hotels this afternoon. I’ll start filing reports on the BCS championship game starting with Thursday’s newspaper.
But before we move on to the BCS championship and the end of an unforgettable 2007 season, here are a few final thoughts about what all took place on New Year’s Day.
The Sugar Bowl really helped Georgia: Early this morning I was asked by a friend what the 41-10 win over Hawaii meant for Georgia as it prepared for next season. I think it was huge from this standpoint. A lot of the national media were at the game last night because it was a compelling story line and because they were going to stay over and cover the BCS championship. Those national media saw how athletic and talented Georgia is. They will remember that when it comes time to mark their preseason ballots. I’ll be stunned if Georgia is not a consensus top five team this August.
Is the Rose Bowl sorry? Mike Bell at 790 The Zone asked me this morning if the Rose Bowl had egg on its face for not taking Georgia to play Southern Cal, which just destroyed Illinois. I had to remind him and I’ll remind you. The Rose Bowl is not embarrassed by that game at all because they don’t care what the fans think. They had their parade and their game. The more and more I talk to people I become convinced that the Rose Bowl was never going to take Georgia because it would have changed their traditional Big Ten-Pac-10 match-up and it would have hurt the Sugar Bowl, which needed Georgia to sell out.
This was Mark Richt’s best year as a coach: Forget the black jerseys. Forget storming the field in Jacksonville. Those were just fun snapshots at a much larger picture. In his seventh season at Georgia, Mark Richt has grown into a big-time college football coach, one of the five best in the country. He better understands the big picture, he knows how to delegate, he knows how to motivate, and he knows how to recruit. He is now the complete package. There should be a very nice raise in his immediate future.
Just thinking: Add redshirt freshman running back Caleb King and incoming receiver A.J. Green to this mix and what do you have in 2008? I’m always skeptical of freshmen in this league until they actually prove it against SEC competition. But if just half the hype on these two kids is true, then Georgia offense will be the best in the SEC. And I will say this. On defense, Georgia has the best collection of players who can run that I have seen in a long, long, time. They are certainly faster as a team than LSU, which I saw a bunch this season.
There is still a big difference in the Division I-A leagues: The five non-BCS conferences were really encouraged by Boise State’s win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl last year. They hoped that a Hawaii win would prove once and for all that one of them belonged in one of these five games each year. But Hawaii’s loss, because it was so decisive, will reopen the argument and make a BCS bowl less likely to take one of the little guys unless they automatically quality. There is a big difference between football programs like Georgia and Hawaii and it showed.
Will June Jones stay?: Jones, the former Falcons coach, has done a magnificent job at Hawaii but you have to wonder is he will move on after this magical season. It will be hard to put together another collection of players as good as this. He has told friends that he only wants to coach about 5-6 more years. SMU is still looking for a coach and with his offense, Jones could probably win that league (Conference USA) in a short amount of time.

No question that UGA will be a top 5 team heading into next year. They return a lot of players and are bringing in a solid recruiting class. UF, I think, will rebound next year and be much better than their 4 losses this year. They have had too much solid recruiting over the last 5-6 years. They are also losing very few players just like UGA. LSU is also going to be a team that will be good and they are my pick to win the SEC again next year. I would pick UGA but their schedule next year with Arizona State, UT and BAMA at home while on the road to LSU and AU as well as the trop to Jax, will be brutal. Not saying it cannot be done but I think LSU has a bit easier of a road. Congrats to UGA on a better than expected season.

Last night, and the last 2 months are a demonstration of how frustrated GT fans are with Chan Gailey (and the athletic dept for sticking with him so long). For much of Gailey’s tenure, UGA beat GT but weren’t necessarily a better team. Now that GT finally got off their rears and decided that mediocrity was not good enough, of course UGA has finally decided to channel all that NFL talent into a “team” effort and now appear to have ascended to top tier program status. It would have been nice if GT had realized that Gailey wouldn’t produce a program anywhere near the one O’Leary had a little sooner so that GT could have been on their way to the top tier, instead of having to watch UGA do it instead.
I have to say I’ve never been a UGA fan, but their team is talented and fun to watch. Losing isn’t easy to stomach to UGA, but it doesn’t feel as bad when you KNOW they had a better team.

Georgia’s 2008 schedule is extremely tough. Complement it with the four consectuive away/neutral site games (LSU, Florida, Auburn and Kentucky) and it is brutal.

2008 is shaping up as great year. UGA looks strong as ever. UF will be better. LSU will be good. Auburn looks like a dark horse in the SEC race. UT, UGA, Arky and LSU all play @ AU. The toughest road games in the SEC are Miss State & Ala.

Good point, Mark D. I was thinking yesterday that Petrino got into another mess he’ll be unhappy with. He deserves it.

Now that the Bowl game is a plesant memory I just want to ask that the hideous black jerseys go into an underground storage locker with a time lock that can’t be opened for at least 25 years. The gimmick was ok once but breaking out those ugly black shirts every couple of weeks just doesn’t cut it. Georgia is supposed to wear Red jerseys, if we keep dragging out the black ones then everyone will think that we are another Clemson with a different uniform for every day of the week with each uniform being progressively uglier than the one before. You all did see the gawd awful purple pants the Tigers wore against Aubarn in the Peach Bowl. The only uniforms that look worse are the Clemson all purple and the Tennessee all baby crap yellow, and anything that Oregon wears.

Congrats to the dogs for thumping an overmatched Hawaii team. However, what was up with CMR matching the dog fans classless chants of “overrated” (which by the way is to only be used when an underdog is beating a favorite…last time I checked UGA was favored big to win, so that chant just shows your classlessness to a T), by challenging a completed pass for a first down when you are ahead by 35 points?? No way Hawaii was coming back, even if you had spotted them 34 points, so just put in your 3rd stringers and let the clock run out already!! I think CMR is trying to copy Urban Meyer…don’t go there Richt!

Frustrated, Inc, good analysis on SEC, Auburn is probably another year(2009) away from a great team and run at NC.I believe UGA will be winner in East over Florida and hopefully Auburn in West.It will be ultimate of football in the SEC next year.

Congrats to UGA on a fine season and bowl win. However, everyone is getting too carried away about next year. Florida will be stronger than this year and Tennessee, the team that won the SEC East and cleaned Georgia’s clock, is returning 16 starters and both kickers. All three were young and next year should be one hell of a battle for the East.

Tennessee has no QB and has loss Cutcliffe.
Florida lost 4 games this year and rests completely on Tebow… whom Georgia sacked 6 times and will do the same next year.
Georgia rolls next year. But don’t take my word for it… just watch and see.

Who called the defensive plays for Tech in the bowl game?? It didn’t look anything like the defense we had run all year. They just lined up at reacted to Fresno St. Tenuta did prove one point. Tech was right not to hire him as head coach.

Matthew, you’re wrong about not having a QB. Crompton or BJ Coleman will be much better than Ainge. You may be right on your second point depending on who Fulmer hires as OC.
PS: Congrats to all the SEC teams winning thier respective bowl games. Flordia, your lack of motivation showed. No way should you have lost to Michigan.

Congrats on a great win against Clemson (you may recall I picked Auburn). I was surprised that Clemson played as well as they did. I didn’t think the game would be that close. Once that new Auburn offense is down I think you guys will be shooting for the top again.

I have been a UGA fan for life (47 yrs.) and can honestly say I have never seen a UGA team wreak havoc like this group of Dawgs did over the last half of this season. This group of young pups matured into the proverbial “great dane” by seasons end. I am amazed at the speed and ferocity that the Defense exhibits and Coach Martinez (as well as Coach Garner, Fabris, and Jancek)deserves accolades for his game plan preparation of the players and their execution of said plan. I am sure Colt Brennen will have nervous twitches for sometime after last nights annhilation. Next year will be interesting and no doubt with their schedule the Dawgs will have to go out and earn it on the field. I expect the ESPN love afair with Urban “the legend” Meyer to continue, and although UF’s D was suspect and will be again especially if Harvey bolts for the NFL, and won’t be surprised if UF starts the season ranked ahead of the Dawgs. I sure hope so as this will be just more motivation for this group of hungry pups!!!

All I can say is, “Thank goodness it’s over with. And, hopefully, during these next 8 months, Richt and the Georgia team will review their tapes and see just how inappropriate their behavior was from the incident in Florida all the way through the season to last night. I’ve never seen a more pompous group of players or coaches in my life. I’d rather my team be mediocre and play/act w/ the utmost class then end the season as the bulldogs have done, which is much better than we all thought they would, but with everyone shaking their heads at them at their behavior. It’s sad. Richt needs to settle down, Def. Coord needs to settle down and everyone needs to take a huge CHILL PILL. The main problem I have w/ Georgia is that they are so spoiled and think they are always the best, when in reality, they are not.

This guy and Cutcliffe bailed your sorry D out time and again not to mention a mediocre running game. Ainge gets my vote for doing the most with the least this season in the SEC. BTW- Glad UT gets to keep Chavis as his D’s continue to go down hill. What is sad is that those young men had to have learned it from someone or some group. That behavior is handed down in the generations. I know because I am a southerner, born and raised, and have SEC in my blood. The behavior I have seen from GA this year comes from the attitude of 47 year old fans. GA may very well be #1 next season. As far as THIS year goes, if I were giving out awards, I would (hands down) give the Bulldogs the award for perserverance and team development. They showed what hard work during a season can do and the team that played last night was the team they should have been earlier on. They deserve a hug and pat on the back on a job well done. I’d be much more supportive of them if they had acted WITH class. They didn’t and I was disappointed because they acted like you, Quaildawg.

To back in Red,
Get used to the black jerseys. Richt said you’ll see them once a season, late in the year. I say you’ll see them in Jax next year.
Also, if you hadn’t heard, the reason we wore black in the Sugar Bowl is because the players get to keep their bowl jerseys. How special it must be for those kids to have that for a keepsake!

Doug….as a fan of traditional and classic unis (which I think UGA has one), I do like the black Jersey. However, if I spent most of my career playing in the red, when I left that is the one I would want to take with me. To me, taking the traditional UGA red would be a better keepsake. That is just me though.

Quaildawg, QB job was never opened up to competition. Yes, Ainge looked good at times but looked awful at other times. Crompton has a much stronger arm and is very mobile. Fulmer has to replace all but one offensive staff member and that will determine much. As for the defense, simply put it was pathetic but will be much better next year (no where to go but up). No predictions for next season, but don’t be so quick to count us out.

L, Obviously you haven’t grasped what Coach Richt has and is developing in his team. Are there times where players make mistakes in the way they react on the field (and off) YES! They are 18-20+ young men and are still developing physically and emotionally. Coach Richt has done a great job this year of tapping into the psychy of his team and taking the lid off to allow them to truly enjoy their time on the filed. Lord knows with the amount of time they devote in prepration the least they should be allowed to do is enjoy the fruit of their labors. I guess you would have them go old school like the story I read about Coach Butts and his 46’ team that slept on cots in some remote location far away from New Orleans so they wouldn’t become ensnared by what was happening outside their preperation for the game. (hey it worked and UGA won but if I recall times dictated that you didn’t give players water either for fear of cramping) I feel certain (naturally I am UGA biased) you would be hard pressed to find a Coach who does a better job of preparing his players, for not only football, but Life than Coach Richt and I can assure you that when they step out of line they pay a hefty price for their actions (again both on and off the field). I challenge you to find anywhere leading up to this game where a UGA player, when interviewed, did not heap praise upon the Hawaii team, Colt Brennen, etc. they have always been consistent in this aspect of respecting their opponent but also have taken some things personal when they feel they have been overlooked or not been given credit when it should have been duly noted. I know alot of outside detractors point to the UF celebration as a lack of character but if you truly read Coach Richt’s post game comments he ordered a post TD celebration but did not set out the specifics of said celebration and with the exception of one or two individual acts there was no taunting of the UF team or players, only a celebration within the team that is UGA. L if you haven’t realized it football is not a civil sport like golf or tennis. It was developed with direct inference to battles and war. It was meant to create collisions and violence and it does necessitate emotionally charged participants. Sometimes those emotions bubble over for that I will make no excuses. BTW- In case you missed it prior to the UF-Mich game I recall seeing the Classy UF team go to the midfield mark and call out the Mich team. Guess they just didn’t have the game to back up their actions or as we say here in the south… they let their bulldog mouth overload their birdog behind.

Georgia proved one thing — Hawaii did not belong. LSU, Tennessee and even Florida with its porous defense (thanks for not even coming close to covering, now I’ve got to dip into the 401K to cover that beating) would have turned the Rainbow Warriors black and blue. And what would USC (the good one, not the mediocre one) have done to Hawaii?

Guys, this is football. Moreover, it is bowl season and the kids have not got to hit someone for over a month (besides in practice). This must have been the first bowl game you guys (L and Big P) viewed all year because every team talks smack after an incomplete pass/big hit/kick off. What planet are you guys from? Blind GA hate must tough right now…
Also, you guys failed to notice how after the vast majority of tackles/blocks a lot of the Ga and Hawaii players were both helping each other off the ground and patting eachohter on the helmets.
Now if you want to talk about a game with little to no sportsmanship, watch a replay of the Michigan/Florida game

UT96 Hey in Sept everyone has a chance. As you mentioned for UT it’s wait and see on Fulmers staff hires. Reality is it will be hard to replace Cutcliffe (and as a UGA fan I’m darn sure glad he is gone as he always gave us fits) and losing Taylor will be hard due to his connection with the players and recruiting. Gotta feel edge will be with UGA this year as we get the week off prior to the UT game this time as y’all did this year. At that point in the season this will be a big advantage for UGA and Richt has a perfect track record with a week off to prepare.

Sugar, I think everyone would have to agree that the Michigan/Florida game had the least sportsmanship than any football game of the season. I suppose I hold the “deep south” SEC teams to a higher standard than the other teams. I personally don’t include Florida in that group (TN, LSU, Ole Miss, Miss State, Alabama, Auburn, GA are the ones that are in the forefront of my mind). There is a great influence from those that surround the coaches and players about how we act down here. And, it’s like gentlemen they should act like. And, I did see many other instances of players helping one another up, etc. It was noticed, please do know. I simply have gotten very put out with Georgia on how they feel slighted or cheated in positioning by the BCS. Life is not always fair and GA seemingly took their BCS positioning frustrations out on Hawaii last night. My question is, did Hawaii deserve it? I think not. There was no doubt in my mind that GA would win. They are simply in a tougher conference than Hawaii will ever be in and they are a top notch team. Am I making sense with where I am going with this? Did Georgia play to win the Sugarbowl or did they play for the #2 BCS spot in August? I think it’s the second. It frustrated me. That’s all.

I am a UGA alum and I loved the game last night. However, to our fans who were chanting “overrated,” that was completely classless considering that Hawaii and its fans traveled 8,000 miles to get to that game and their budget is probably less than what we spend on intramural flag football. Not to mention, it did nothing to help our image on prime time television with the nation watching. Thanks, guys. Next time don’t bother making the trip if that’s how you represent the school.

By the way, my hat’s off to Hawaii’s fans. They hung in their with their team to the end and celebrated like crazy when UH scored that late TD. The UH program is very fortunate to have a dedicated, loyal fanbase like they have. They are island version of Dawg Nation.

I agree with your assesment to a degree. I dont think the Rose Bowl committe rejected Georgia because they were concerned for the Sugar Bowl selling out. I think the damn Yanks just hate the SEC. They continue to overlook the SEC every year. They are scared that if they placed SEC teams playing there butt punch buddies (USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Michigin) every year those teams would be exposed. Its not the speed that makes the SEC the toughest conference, it is the competition. In the SEC you get better or you lose. In the northern and western conferences you have 2 or 3 average teams to play per year and thats it. I hope LSU spanks the Bucks, and the SEC wins another title, because next year it will be the Dawgs turn.

We played to show we belonged. All UGA heard was how great the Hawai’i team was, how we better watch out cause they would score often and in bunches. We didn’t even win our own division. Our guys were so tired of hearing how we weren’t that good, we didn’t belong and how they couldn’t stop the Warriors’ offense that we came out with a point to prove. Football is a game of emotion. Our guys came out with fire and anger and took their frustrations of being disrespected out on the only people they could. The majority of people bet on Hawai’i…in case you didn’t notice. The line got smaller and smaller as the game got closer and closer. The country disrespected the Dawgs. They didn’t give them credit. The Dawgs had something to prove to themselves, their coaches, the fans and the country. GA should play like this every game. Next year, when you walk into a stadium, be it Sanford or on the road, my beloved Dawgs, remember these words..

Top Dawg, I fail to see anywhere in this blog that someone has referred to anyone as a bunch of thugs. I agree w/ you about the Hawaii fans; they were mighty relunctant to give in, plus the fact on how far they traveled. That’s true dedication. But, there were some Warriors with classless actions as well. I’ll remind everyone that there’s GA’s Henderson with a concussion today. I was absolutely floored on Keenan Jones’ behavior. If I had been the coach, I’d have yanked him off the field by the hair on his head. THAT ALONE was UNACCEPTABLE and reprehensible behavior on Hawaii’s part. Like I said, way up there, I’m glad it’s over. Let’s see how Monday night plays out w/ LSU and Ohio. I believe LSU’s gonna win and then the SEC will dominate! We are the best conference out there as far as college football goes!

If Georgia had played USC it would have upstaged LSU and Ohio State. The country would the calling for the winner of that game to be national champs. As for Jones winning the USA I think I saw a pretty good UCF team lose to Mississippi State at the wire. That team returns Smith as a running back and is really starting to take strides to being a major player. I dealt they will stay in the USA much longer but while they do SMU will have a lot of competition.

L Here is my question for you. Why are you so concerned with waht the score of the UGA game was and not the USC game. They beat the #13 ranked team by 32 and UGA beat #12 by 31. Did they disrespect Illinois? Or how about all the times UF left in Tebow to run up his numbers? It is a double standard in NCAA football I am sick of. Just because UGA is not the “media darling” we are the ones said to have no class. I am sure if you(or anyone else in this conversation) watched more teams and looked at them the same way you do UGA, you may have a different opinion.

Grudge, Coach Tuberville picked Hawaii 4th? Damn that explains his headaches from the UGA game!!!. Dawgs should be up their with the best, but season is over, Auburn, UGA, Fl., Tenn and LSU are ALL reloading..If Ohio State beats LSU, which I don`t think will happen, UGA should be #2 behind USC in final polls.

Remember, when in a time we weren’t so prominent, Munson would pontificate that “the whole conference is watching Athens-holding its breath.” (God, I miss Munson)
How prophetic-now the whole nation is watching the DAWGS with the media exposure and success we have had this year. It would be hard to imagine not being included in the top five next year, with the FLA celebration, the decisive win over AU, and the exclamation point in the Sugar Bowl.
UGA will definitely have a target on its back next year. But if we can smack down the Heisman winner and a runner up, the boys can take the field with a lot of confidence next year.
By the way, what do you think Munson”s take of that stellar (sarcasm intended) Fox broadcast would be?
Glory Glory.

I dare say most here in Louisiana are today offering congrats to the Bulldogs for playing a classy game of first-rate football and for representing the SEC so well. But some of the rantings on this blog indicate that some Georgia fans are not worthy of their team. Maybe I’m missing something here, but why is everyone complaining? It was a given that Fox was pulling for Hawaii and an upset, it was obvious by the commentators. The last time I checked, we play football, which involves running, passing, hitting, catching, scoring, etc. At the end of the game, the team with the most points wins. I don’t think that the rule book states that you should let your opponent score, just to keep the game interesting. Hawaii has a nice story, but guess what, welcome to the mainland and welcome to SEC football. Our guys were jacked up about playing the only undefeated team in the country. They wanted to end the season with a win. The Defense played with fire and did not want to let up. Do you really think that our second team offense & defense weren’t going to do what they’ve practiced all year? They finally got to play and they were awesome! Go Dawgs! Sic’em! Woof, woof, woof!!!

I wish we could find a way to eliminate all this Yah-Yah, we’re better than you crap and appreciate the beauty of college football, marvel at the talent, and respect our opponents.

L: I agree with your assessment of Keenan Jones. He was absolutely out of control. My positive comments about UH were about their fanbase, not their team. Having said that, most of their team were good guys. That Jones guy took a cheap shot and showed out most of the game.
By the way, what was up with the personal foul call on Gamble (#50) late in the game? The whistle had not blown, so Jones (#9) was tackling the UH player (playing until the whistle blows) and Gamble (#50) was just over there helping. The refs should have blown the whistle much earlier, but neither UGA player did anything wrong.

L certainly does not like Ga if he singles them out for celebrating. I am a Ga fan and I hate it when we do it but I see EVERY team do it. While I would love to see a player do it like Herschel and just hand the ball to the ref, or a D player make a good tackle and get up and walk back to his position, it ain’t happening. Its the culture of todays athlete and a coach can curb it some but won’t get the great athlets if he completely tries to stop it. See Joe Paterno. I think any player who gets a stupid personal foul penalty should have to pay a big price at practice the next week and eventually with playing time. Last year Dennis Roland would have been the first.

I really would have liked to see us play USC in the Rose Bowl and Prove that the SEC can beat the Pac-10 as well. I give the Hawaii fans credit they were there till the very end and applauded us when we got our trophy. Next year’s Georgia-Florida game I think will decide who goes to the National Championship from the SEC. I have a suggestion for ESPN,fire Mark May and Jesse Palmer. All that Mark May does is put down the SEC and tells us that we suck. And all you here from Jesse Palmer is Florida,Florida,Florida. He needs to get a life and learn how to tie a tie, sheesh. I hope LSU kills Ohio State like Florida did last year so we can her Herbie wine all off season.Bottom line is the SEC is the best. Can’t wait till next year,GO DAWGS!!!

Compliments to UGA for an impressive win. Would have been more exciting for all if Trojans roadtripped to New Orleans, or if the Dogs got to be in CA yesterday.
GA is fortunate to have a Coach as classy and talented as Mark Richt. That said, challenging the catch with under 1 minute to play was not to the high level he has established for himself and the GA Program. His answer in post game “you don’t get to take the challenges with you” was semi-witty, but again not really up to his standards.
Seems like this year everyone has the chip on their shoulder and a little bit of Belichick-itis for which the only cure appears to be embarrassing your competition. Like the earlier guy said, it isn’t all about style points so again great win by the Dogs and way to show the SEC proud!

We are #4 and beat the #10 team by 31. And now some of the national media have the nerve to start arguing USC should jump UGA and share the national title??? THIS SYSTEM SUCKS Our own Mark Schlabach has an article on ESPN entitled “Trojans look like nation’s best with noone left to play.” SCHLABACH - STUFF IT! Seriously, this is so predictable. BTW this is the email I sent to Fox SporA few observations about the Georgia-Hawaii telecast:
Train your announcers to do play by play commentary. The 2 guys announcers had diarrhea of the mouth. They never shut up. I finally muted the TV to enjoy the game. They do not have to talk every minute & tell us every nuance of every player. Just let the viewers enjoy watching the damn game.
Tell the announcers not to criticize a coach for making the right decision. Mark Richt correctly challenged a call in the best interest of his team. That is what he is employed to do. Your announcer criticized him for doing so. It appeared so hyporcitical when he gushed over Richt in the interview after the game. Can’t you get someone more professional?
Finally, I hope you made enough money in advertising off of the game. The game lasts 1 hour, & the broadcast took +4 hours due to countless commercials. I know advertising is your revenue stream but I will not be watching any more BCS games this season due to the relentless commercials. ts today. You can provide feedback to them at their website.

Since his career began in Athens, CMR has been a class act. He’s always even-tempered, respectful, and polite. It was actually a nice change of pace to see him get “fired-up” a bit this season. It makes the games more fun to play…and watch!
The Sugar Bowl was destined to be a lose/lose scenario for the Dawgs: if they lose, they’ve lost to Hawaii. If they win, they beat Hawaii. There’s no justification for Georgia to hold back. None.
I hope Richt has resolved to win every game this year by hanging half a hundred on all adversaries!

I don’t know if Keenan Jones has any eligibility left, but he should be suspended for a couple of games for the hit on Mikey Henderson. It was without doubt a helmet-to-helmet collision, and that’s supposed to get you kicked out of the game right there. The gutless officials who only penalized him for a personal foul should be held accountable, as well. The officials seem more concerned about taunting and celebrations, but that doesn’t get a player’s neck broken. Learn some priorities and enforce the rules accordingly, guys.

A little-known part of the BCS selection rules gave the Sugar Bowl dibs on an SEC team when LSU made the title game; unless the Sugar passed on taking an SEC team (which wasn’t going to happen), the Rose couldn’t have Georgia. They could have given USC a better game by taking WVU or Missouri instead of Illinois, but Georgia wasn’t possible.
Other point - Hawaii wasn’t legit this year. But they were by far the worst of the non-BCS/ND teams to qualify for a BCS game; 2004 Utah and 2006 Boise State were far, far better teams which had wins over good BCS teams on their record and destroyed the cupcakes on their schedules. So Hawaii’s blowout loss shouldn’t be an indication that non-BCS teams don’t belong, just that 2007 Hawaii didn’t belong.

This August…I will be more stunned if UGA is ranked 5th or lower as opposed to them being ranked 1st in the country.
We are losing only 7 of 22 starters…7 return on offense and 8 return on Defense.
Furthermore…though we are losing R Brown and Bailey on offense,,,we are replacing those players with studs the likes of Caleb King and AJ Brown. Those are SEC READY players as of this writing.
On Defense there is a ton of depth so that losing Howard and Johnson(though they are terrific no doubt) want hurt that bad.
This team is top 3 EASILY this August. Hopefully #1!

Okay, as a football-loving Georgia Girl all this “it’s a gentleman’s game” stuff is really beginning to annoy me. I’ve been a football fan since I could walk and this “kindler, gentler” crap is so far removed from what I’ve always believed football to be that I’m wondering if we aren’t in kindergarten instead of on a football blog.
Let me get this straight “L” and others: You would rather UGA be less intense and lose (South Carolina & Tennessee) than be a little animated and win (the last half of the season)?!! You’re saying a little extracurricular smack-talking and a winning attitude is akin to “thuggish” behavior?!! Whaa?? I’ve watched just about every bowl game this year and I can honestly say that I didn’t see our players do anything worse that what you can see on any playground during a pick-up basketball or baseball game anywhere in America! And to call yesterday’s hard-hitting, bone-crushing game anything other than the defensive masterpiece it was is to reject everything that football is and always has been about. In the old days, defenses didn’t think they had done their jobs unless someone left the game bloody. In the old days, what Keenan Jones (Hawaii’s #29) did to Mikey Henderson would have earned him a steak dinner from the Coach. Today it’s illegal and should have earned him immediate rejection. That’s as it should be. But what our guys did last night/this morning was play “football” and very well at that.
And while you’re defending Hawaii’s wonderful attitude and seemingly uncalled for drubbing, you might want to go back and read some of the comments made by June Jones and Colt Brennan over the last two weeks about how Hawaii was “belonged” in a BCS bowl and they’re explosive offense is a great equalizer making it possible for them to beat anyone on any given day. So, in my opinion, for us to treat them any different than any other team in the SEC would have been insulting to their status as WAC champions. They threw down the gauntlet. All our players did was pick it up. That’s not classless. That’s football.

Folks, face it. UGA has what is quite possibly the best - and definitely the most loyal and committed - coaching staff in America. Only three have left in seven years: one for a head coaching job at a mid-major, one to attempt to single-handedly keep Allied Moving Lines in business (were I Mrs. Van Gorder, I’d be p**), and one who simply got the sack after less than one year. Not only are these gentlemen great football coaches, they are great leaders of young men. For example, Ian Smith would start at most schools, but since he didn’t act right last summer, he didn’t play for Mark Richt this year. Do college students make mistakes and bad judgments? As my Big Ten pals would say, You betcha. Do they pay a price if they happen to be football players at UGA? As my fellow Southerners say, you betcherass, Dad.
As for the Sugar Bowl, well, Hawai’i simply got an introduction to SEC football. June Jones should be complimented on the job he has done there with little financial assistance from his bosses. But really, no conference in America (and only a few teams) has the combination of size, speed and talent that is commonplace in the SEC. And looking to next year, I see damn few schools that can stack up to the team that the suave and gentlemanly Georgia Bulldawgs will put on the field, IF they play with the same focus and intensity that they did for the last half of this season.
Finish the drill, gentlemen. No one believes in UGA but us, so let’s just start convincing the unwashed in September.

UGAGal you hit the nail on the head my friend. Hawaii and their fans talked smack for weeks. How they were gonna prove to the world how good they were. I remember rading quite a few post on here by Hawaii fans that they were gonna shock the world and dissed UGA. Colt Brennan declared Hawaii as the world’s best offense and no one could stop them. As for the overrated chant… I think it was deserved. Their fans and team cheered when Kennan Jones hit Henderson. If you were not at the game you did not see a lot of what was going on. CMR played almost everyone. I think 12 defensive lineman played in the game. If he wanted to run the score up he could have easily. We took it easy on them. The starters sat out the entire 4th quarter. Go Dawgs.

No way USC jumps UGA… Well, I take that back - they probably will because this system sucks, but no way they should. We are two spots ahead of them and beat the #10 team v. the #13 team they beat. We won by 31, and USC won by 32. If USC jumps the DAWGS it will show a bias of mid-western and western ballots who line up against the SEC and Southern schools. Hell, we fought a war with the North and West over much less important things than this! I know it’s a rumor but it is kind of fun to think that our star running back of the early 80’s(Herschel) went to New Jersey to play football there for the USFL after he graduated. Now if you look at Herschel and Knowshon side by side they look an awful lot alike, distinct jaw and cheekbones. So Herschel played there in the mid to late 80’s - When was Knowshon born? Coincedence? Could he be the daddy?

People who feel sorry for poor Hawaii didn’t check their scores against lesser opponents. Hawaii ran up the score against a lot of teams.
Also, the lame “Georgia is classless and their fans are classless” mantra has gotten old. All we ever got for being “kinder and gentler” was snubs by the national media and the coaches in the BC$ beauty contest. Our team and the fans deserve equal, fair consideration for national accolades. It is not too much to ask.
If playing the full 60 minutes as if every minute counts will get us treated fairly, why would anyone whine about that? There is nothing wrong with playing to win every minute as if each one is a new game.
So I don’t think a challenge at any time in the game, no matter what the score may be is wrong. And it is not running up the score if a team leaves starters in and keeps playing as if they have not given up. Hawaii talked smack about how good their offense was. They bragged about how quickly and how often they score. It is lame to suggest Georgia was classless for playing as hard as they could.

Hey KG, watch our pathetic group play for another national title. LOL. As for the thug thing, I never saw any LSU players running onto the field to taunt an opponent. Just be glad Florida had a little class and didn’t retaliate causing a huge black eye for the SEC. So as for the thug thing, if the shoe fits then wear it. Have fun WATCHING Monday night and thanks for breaking in the Super Dome. LOL.

you got beat by a 6-6 non-bowl team, teams don`t get first place votes for that effort,…If WVA continues to win out, they will be ranked second behind Ohio State-LSU winner, Opponent problem Hawaii or Oklahoma?? USC and Florida will be preseason #1 and #2,2008.Possible 4 SEC teams in top 10.

Well Coach Richt just moved into the top FOUR Coaches in the country as I sit and watch Stoops do a swan dive into an empty pool. Cannot believe I am seeing the same OU that got pantsed in the desert last year come out and look clueless this year. He goes for two after their first TD…wrong and then tries to copy UGA with the onside and his kicker doesn’t even get it 10 yards!!! Great Coaching em up there Stoops!!! Dagger by WVU!!!! UGA needs to send Stoopsey a Thank You card for this gift in the polls!!!

Suggestion for AJC Poll… Were you surprised that Terrence Moore would write a negative piece on UGA? Yes_ No_ Do you think Moore has a bad case of “Poll Envy” since his beloved Notre Dame sucks and probably will only crack the polls at number 8 next year? (hint-sarcasm) Yes_ No_ Do you think Moore reeks of hypocrisy as he tends to “whine” every time there is a purported black injustice in the world according to Terrence? Yes_ No_
FWIW I have not and refuse to read his article (if you want to call biased rants that)

Everyone who spends their time on other teams’ message boards writing snide messages need to seriously consider if they don’t have something more important to do … Georgia fans included.
And how many of the Georgia fans were on here killing CMR and Martinez after the UT and Vandy games?
Problem with these boards is that people say a bunch of stupid stuff that they would never say to anyone’s face.
I hope LSU beats Ohio State convincingly. As for the character of Georgia’s players, I’ll take a team with Kelin Johnson, Thomas Brown and Kregg Lumpkin on it any day. And I ask that all the Georgia fans who are ready to bronze CMR today remember their fondness when they start asking for Bobby Petrino at the first sign of adversity.
This has been a great season. I hope the next one’s even better.

The dawgs should be as good or better than advertised next year. However, there are several key areas to watch. Running back…Caleb King has got to step it up and match the productivity of Brown this year and be prepared to play. Injuries were what gave Moreno the chance to show his abilities. The recievers and Stafford have to play better than they did this season. DE need to start where they left off this year. We will have to replace one of those. Kelin Johnson will have to be replaced as he is a Senior as well. There are capable athletes, but are they football players, we will see. The dogs must start working now and finish the drill. CMR, CMB, and CWM along with CDV, CRG must be on their “A” game all year. The schedule is brutal, but if everyone plays with the focus and passion they have exhibited int the second half of the season, it will be a great year for dawg nation. GO DAWGS!!!!

tdog and others,i don’t know what game you were watching.i was there and if richt wanted to run up the score he did a damn poor job.we had the ball inside the ten and he handed off to lump once, then the BACKUP qb tried to pass for a td.where was moreno?where was brown?where was sutherlin?where was stafford?why go for it on fourth down, take the sure three!a coach that wants to run up the score keeps his leading scorers in the game!as for contesting a bad call, why not?should we just let them score?frankly i think cmr pulled the starters too early.hanging 50 on them would possibly give uga a higher bcs rating.i saw no “thuggish” behavior,in fact uga defenders often talked to uh players on the field in the endless timeouts, shaking hands before resuming play.also uga players”took a knee” when a uh player appeared badly hurt and gave him a hand when he was helped to the bench.btw,i didn’t like the overated chant, but richt did not lead it.l is a liar.the chant was coming from the endzone, richt was on the sideline,he couldn’t have led the chant if he had wanted to.

WVA looked very good last night, they have most of their starters returning,2008, including QB, RB`s(Devine-fresh) plus Slaton(hurt), offensive line and many on defense. They will probably be ranked 2nd or 3rd in final poll and same preseason. Auburn plays WVA at Morgantown second game next year. I hope Auburn moves fast with their new spread offense, we will need it.Auburn schedule is tough 2008, WVA, Miss State, LSU, Tenn,Miss Southern in a row. Auburn will be 10-15th range in preseason polls, UGA 2-5 ranking.USC, media darling, will be #1…

Tech fan here. The dogs had a great season. They have superior talent and the x&o coaching has been great. I do tend to think that cmr may stand the chance of lossing his grip on the team though. I wonder if we might see the spiritedness lose over to a bit of thuggery. Didn’t he play at Miami? When was he there? If his players fail to see the difference between on the field behavior and off the field behavior, I think St. Mark may have given more than the jersey color over to the dark side.
For his sake I hope not, but he may be flirting with the darkside. I hope he knows and teaches his players where to draw the line. Actually as a Tech fan, I hope he doesn’t. If he has somehow become a “player’s coach” as opposed to a coach…he will lose his team.

As a life-long UGA fan, I am so glad the team is playing like it is. Play for ratings, wins, to make a statement, all of the above. Play with power, speed, skill. Just do it; and they are doing it. It’s our turn. They deserve to hold themselves up with confident bearing. Nothing I saw this season says they were unsportsmanlike. With Richt it isn’t going to happen. His civility and dignity are all over this team.

I don’t think M Richt was trying to run up the score. He put in 2nd and 3rd stringers and let everyone play. Are they supposed to quit playing? It is not UGA’s job or Mark Richt’s job to stop the UGA offense it was Hawaii’s job. If he ran trick plays and fake punts up by 30 that is classless but letting 2nd and 3rd stringers play hard is what you are supposed to do. It made me laugh when they said he shouldn’t challenge the play. I guess we should have let them score out of sympathy. Some people try to be too politically correct that their reasoning sounds ridiculous. Can’t wait until next year. Go dawgs!

Terrance - if the glove don’t fit, you must aquit! Man, the defense played so great, they overshadowed the offense’s performance - 41 points is more than HI ever hoped to score against us. I’d like to chime on the team character issue. As a UGA fan and rapid supporter there’s no substitute for W’s! HOWEVER, I think a behavior review by Richt and his staff is a good idea. We need to start acting like we’ve been there a little more. There’s no reason to wildly celebrate after a tackle, INT, sack or other type of play these guys are expected to make. Mark Gastinuex may have started the wild personal celebration, but our team has certainly learned to perfect it. Let’s learn to win with a little more class! You can bet that the SEC has taken notice and we’ll have a target on our backs going into ‘08!

I was there and didn’t care for the over rated chant but it wasn’t that bad really. The game was so lopsided the GA fans were not very rowdy and I didn’t see one UGA fan taunt a Hawaii fan. Funny thing is the most classless fans in the joint were the LSU jerks dressed in all their glory. When the Hawaii receiver was down after a big hit and both teams went to one knee, the stadium went quiet and the yahoos from LSU started their L S U chant. Idiots finally stopped after the whole stadium started tellng them to have a little class. Pathetic.

Wow so much to comment about. First I truly hope that the majority of fans talking about the behavior of our players are fans of other teams. Georgia completely showed class throughout the game. There was no crazy taunting going on. Yes they showed some excitement. So does every other program in the country and it allows the kids to have fun. If you want to talk about the Florida celebration yes that could have been dangerous but with the exception of one player the team actually celebrated together not taunting UF.
Running up to score like some people and the announcers thought. My god, when UGA saw early in the game they were going to control the game they could have beat UH 80 - 3 easily. They could have played Moreno and thrown the ball down field the whole game like Meyer, Stoops or Carrol would have done and completely obliterated UH. UGA showed class by running the ball up the middle and having mostly 3rd string playing the entire 4th quarter.
The talk of UGA being NC this year. While I think UGA is great this year they don’t deserve it losing to a 6-6 team. Neither does USC, WVA, VT, OK, or Mizz. The college season until we have a playoff is who is the best team throughout the year. With our current system LSU and OSU are the only choices for their seasons. Who are the best teams right now. No doubt USC and UGA and maybe LSU if they are back healthy like in the beginning of the year. Who would win. I have no clue. USC and UGA are great right now. Both have mediocre receivers. It would come down to Moreno vs. McKnight. What a game that would be.
Next year and NC. If it is going to happen it needs to happen within the next two years. The receivers have to catch the ball and if Stafford improves as much next year as he did this year our offense should be unstoppable.
As to our coaches, Richt great job. It is nice to see a coach maturing and learning the role as well. One request please get a new receivers coach. Our guys are still way to unpredictable when a ball hits them in the hands. Coach Martinez I was one who was killing you after the UT game. Maybe he learned. If you watch our D for the last couple of years prior to the UF game this year it was bend but don’t break and no aggressiveness except when a player made his own big hit. From the UF game on this year it was attack. That is how you play D and thanks for bringing that style back to UGA. Please keep it up next year.
Can’t wait til 08 kickoff.

I have to agree with “L”. Her comments are right on. I have been a Dawg for 36 years (all my life and will be til I die) and my family are huge fans. I believe Richt is an awesome coach (should’ve been coach of the year) and he has done alot for UGA in his career there. I wish him and the team to have an awesome year next year and hope they become eligible to play in next year’s National Championship game (it should’ve been this year). They were poorly matched up with Hawaii this year. They should have been matched up with someone tougher. — For those mocking the Dawgs….I think you all are just jealous that GA is doing so well. Did I fall asleep for a year and miss something? What is with all the thug & felon talk? Who on our team has killed, raped or shot anyone? Yes, any time you have 100+ 18 to 22 year olds to look after, there will be some bad eggs. In my fraternity about 18 years ago, we had about 65 guys and we were always dealing with some idiot’s behavior. That is college life.
If anyone has paid attention, the VAST majority of our team are good students, good people and are constantly thanking God and others for their opportunities. Seriously, there is not an interview that goes by someone doesn’t talk about reading Scripture, working service projects or going home to visit mom.
The DAWGS are riding high and climbing even farther up the charts, so it is only natural that people using fake names will take personal, inaccurate shots at young men / boys playing football for free over the internet. The same “men” get drunk before the games, eye 18 year old girls while their wives stand beside them, usually shout profanity at the games and then drive home drunk.
Now, you tell me, who is being the jerk & the thug here…

Why Tech hates Georgia…
Let’s say you owned a company. An independent research firm rates your company’s product superior to Company Y’s product in, say, 9 out of 10 categories. Your product is enjoyed by astronauts, Nobel prize winners, top comedians, former presidents, senators, CEO’s, and Master’s golf tournament founders. Your product attracts patrons from all over the globe and has international recognition. Yet, inexplicably, your product is second to a Company Y’s product in your own back yard. Would that p** you off…. probably a little. Add to that a local liberal rag, let’s call it the (UG)Ajc, pandering to Company Y’s patrons. Even though in their editorial pages they write about the little guy and what’s wrong in the government and —- vis a vis our government —- the world, (UG)Ajc’s writers nevertheless pander to the “bubba” base of Company Y.
So, journalists are supposed to be objective and part of “speaking TRUTH to power”, yet, for the most part, the (UG)Ajc writers ignore one of the finest Company (academic) gems in the world. Is that not hypocrisy at its finest? How can one (read, sportswriters) claim to be “objective” when he/she obviously panders to a particular Company’s (school’s) customer base? No matter how they describe it or justify it, they are influenced by a profit motive to sell their (UG)AJC paper. It is sickening…
To all UGA alums (not the bubba fan base that never went there), be glad Tech grads focused on the quality of the school and not the football program; if we had, you guys never would have gotten admitted to UGA in the first place (we would have gone there and you would have been left out) and would be relegated to the bubba fan base that Tech grads particularly detest. UGA is and will always be inferior to Tech where it really counts… and that ain’t football…. You guys (including you, Bradley and Barnhart) are truly pathetic. These blogs prove that, and underscore your delusional outlook that rears its ugly head every year this season. THWG
