Les Miles will have a Merry Christmas
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Things we learned, and things we still don’t know after the weekend:
1. Les Miles is going to have a Merry Christmas: Nobody wanted Michigan to hire a new coach more than the current coach at LSU. Because if the Wolverines, who wanted Miles, had not gotten a coach in place by Christmas, the Michigan rumors would have dogged Miles throughout the preparations for the national championship game. THAT would have been the story in New Orleans, not the fact that LSU was playing for the national title.
2. What if West Virginia had beaten Pittsburgh? One of the reasons West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez turned down Alabama last year, I strongly believe, was that he knew his 2007 Mountaineer team was good enough to play for the national championship. If West Virginia beats Pittsburgh on Dec. 1, the Mountaineers would be in the big game right now. Would Coach Rod have been willing to turn down Michigan if that had happened? Michigan fans should be thrilled. Rodriguez will recruit speed and force the rest of the Big Ten to do so as well. This is a great hire for Michigan.
3. Can Cutcliffe be successful at Duke? David Cutcliffe, the offensive coordinator at Tennessee really wanted the job at Georgia Tech but could not get an interview. He is convinced that he has learned a lot since his tenure at Ole Miss ended and will be able to apply those lessons at Duke. The Duke administration has promised to give him some help in terms of facilities and with the admissions process. If Duke wants to be competitive in football, they need to help this guy more than they helped Ted Roof. Speaking of Roof, if somebody needs a good defensive coordinator then call this guy. He wants to coach next season.
4. Phillip Fulmer is in a tough spot: Trooper Taylor has been a loyal soldier and has done incredible work for Fulmer coaching the wide receivers and helping with player development. Taylor is one of those guys that every staff needs to be successful. But what if Fulmer determines that Taylor is simply not ready to become offensive coordinator after the departure of Cutcliffe? Taylor will have opportunities to leave and, after getting passed over twice, probably will in order to become a coordinator. That is the next stepping stone to being a head coach. That’s just part of the business.
5. I’ve got two words for Phillip Fulmer: Like most college head coaches, Fulmer likes the familiar. He likes the comfortable. That’s why he brought back Cutcliffe, a known commodity, to run his offense and that turned out well. But if Fulmer wants to really shake things up and get the Volunteer Nation excited about the future of the program, I have two words for him:
Norm Chow.
He’s the best quarterback coach this side of Cutcliffe and Steve Spurrier and he’s just down the interstate in Nashville. Maybe you can’t lure him from the comfort zone of the NFL. But it’s worth a call.

Tony, I’ll talk to Fulmer later today and I’ll tell him what you said about hiring Norm Chow. I’ll also let him know that he can find him in Nashville. One question though, is Nashville in Tennessee?

Okay, who among the AJC sports writers, several of whom accused Les Miles of being a liar, is going to be the first to apologize for their previous comments? Looks like CLM meant it when he said he was not going to take the Michigan job, huh? Time to “man up,” as it seems to be popular to say among the AJC staff.

Looks like Booby Petrino jumped a week too soon. He could have stayed in the Big East conference and gotten hired by WVU. The SEC stays tough with Miles staying at LSU. Rodriguez is having his press conference right now. The guy sounds genuine, honest and down to earth. Funny. Not like Carr who seems like he O.D’s on Ambien.

BTW Tony, If WVU beats Pitt and plays for the NC I don’t think Rodriguez is even looked at by Michigan. WVU would have had a good shot to beat anybody in the NC game. Rodriguez wouldn’t have considered UM I don’ think. Being the WVU guy. Michigan being the winningest program of all time and probably the top job in the country it is a step up for any coach.

I will pull for Ohio st when they play Michigan every year for want Rodriguez did to Bama!! Fulmer will name somebody from his staff or bring back somebody with TN connections!! Trooper Taylor is the second best recruiter on the TN staff behind Fulmer!! I can’t wait to see Bama and Arkansas play in football, because the game could be called the SOB’S BOWL GAME!! MERRY X-MAS!!

If Ted Roof is such a good DC, why did so many Tech opponents hang so many points on Tech when he was here? His defenses couldn’t stop a thing. I always called his defenses the “Leaky Roof” defense. If Roof wants a coaching job, he needs to go down to DII or DI-AA and learn the ropes.
Murphy: BOTH Tech and Duke wanted PJ first. ‘Nuff said.

Murphy,
I have to call you out as a fool. David Cutcliffe is Chan Gailey’s long lost twin brother. Here are Cutcliffe’s records at Ole Miss: 8-4, 7-5, 7-4, 7-6, 10-3, 4-7. Here are Chan Gailey’s records at GT: 7-6, 7-6, 7-5, 7-5, 9-5, 7-5. Cutcliffe’s 10-3 season coincided with Eli Manning’s last season in Oxford. Gailey’s 9-5 season coincided with Calvin Johnson’s last season in Atlanta. Both of those players were chosen 1 or 2 in the NFL draft. These guys are the same coach. Mediocre except when they recruit an school record setting player. Paul Johnson has won it all at the Div II level and won against all odds at a service academy. He’s a COACH. That means players come in and learn and are better football players. Are the Manning brothers good because they were coached by Cutcliffe, or is Cutcliffe considered a QB guru because he was working with players predisposed to be good?

If WVU were playing for the NC Rodriguez would not have been a candidate at Mich. because Miles would have taken the job. I truly believe the only reason he stuck with LSU is the possiblity of winning a NC this year. If WVU wins they play OSU while LSU plays in the Sugar against Hawai’i and Miles bolts.

Why would Chow, who left USC for the NFL, decide to re-enter the college game at UT? Taking the OC position at UT would negate the reason for his going to the NFL in the first place. He would have essentially spent several years in the NFL only to trade himself down in college programs.

Why would a man want to go to Duke to coach football? Maybe Davis going to Carolina stirred something in Durham. Back when I was a boy in the 60’s and 50’s these two schools could hold their own with anybody. My father played in the stadium in 1933 beating the Rose Bowl National Champions, while at Tech. Wade hasn’t changed one iota since my Dad walked off that field. They must have told David Cutcliffe something.

ATL Gator, I’ll be the first to admit I have even more respect for Miles now. True to his word. Got to respect that. I guess that feud with Carr is deeper than we think? I think Miles didn’t want the job because it had Carr’s fingerprints on it, i.e., his recruited classes for the next 3-4 years. If he came in and won right away he would be riding Carr’s recruits? Or maybe Miles wants to look at the next level? Weird that you would put a Michigan clause in your contract, have the job open up and then turn it down. Unless Rodriguez meets up with Gary Moeller at the local pub he may be there a long time. Recruiting buzz is already up and sounding pretty good for Rich. Michigan will now have a very good recruiting class. Notre Dame will definitely suffer.

As a UGA fan I’d love it Fulmer hired Trooper Taylor as OC. I could be wrong but he seems like he’d be a good HC (much like Rodney Garner) but is not good enough X & O wise to be an OC. Another factor that might play into the decision is how it didn’t work out the last time he promoted a coach to OC. I can’t think of anyone with UT connections that would be qualified for this job so I’ll be ecstatic if he wants to go that route. I doubt Norm Chow would come back to college to be an OC when part of the reason he went to the NFL was to make him more attractive as college HC candidate. However he’s never been an OC in the SEC so that might interest him. I also agree if I’m Fulmer I at least call & make him say no. Al Bourges might be a logical candidate for this job if Fulmer wants to stick to a traditional attack. If Chan Gailey would take the job he’s be a good candidate as well but I’m guessing he’ll end up in the NFL.
It’ll be interesting to see how Rich Rodriguez offense looks next year with a big NFL prototype passing QB (Ryan Mallet) & how long it takes him to fully implement his spread option attack at Michigan. If I recall right his system started off more as a fast break no huddle passing O then evolved more into a running option based system after coaching good running QB’s. Also I think the QB that Pat White beat out for job was more of a passing QB so we might see them be a spread passing team until he gets a good running QB.
If Duke gives him the resources Cutcliffe will bring them to respectability then if he’s smart & has the opportunity he’ll leave for a better job.

gdawg~zoo——I’ve never heard the official version, but several friends of mine who are Auburn alumni have reason to believe that Terry got bounced because he slept with one of the athletic department secretaries and/or the daughter of one of the school’s directors. To look at the guy, who would have believed that he was a ladies’ man?
Regarding Michigan, Carr and Miles, it was never apparent to me that UM had actually offered the job to CLM. Given CLM’s success at LSU and the national prominence of the LSU football program and the SEC, the only reason to leave for Ann Arbor would be his desire to coach at his alma mater. Nothing dishonorable about that. The sportswriters need to lay off these coaches. More often than not, they are in an impossible situation at the end of the regular season and before the bowl season is over. If the coach’s team is in a conference championship game, a big-time bowl or the BCS championship game, they would not be doing their current team any favors by announcing the departure before the end of the season.
The media can be insatiable at times, and very often the reporters are responsible for putting these guys in the impossible situation. All it takes is one repeatedly asking the question, and then they all begin to question the denial or try to interpret the “no comment” in the least flattering way. Sort of like asking when you quit beating your wife … you can’t win.

Michael, there is some kid out of Pennsylvania that is supposed to be the next Vince Young. Didn’t get his name but I heard that he just put his name on U of M list. Mallet might not play next year. You know that Rodirguez will play the freshmen if needed. He learned that at WVU with White and Slaton (remember he didn’t start those guys until 6 games in their freshman year). Michigan football just got exicting.

That recruit’s name is Pryor, and he was down to WV and Ohio St. before Rodriguez made the move to Ann Arbor, he has added Michigan to his wish list as of last night.
I love the pick up by Michigan, funny how they courted Schiano and got Rodriguez when WV has destroyed Rutgers since both were coaching there.
I would not dismiss Mallet at UM yet. He ran the spread in HS, and he may have the best arm of anyone Rodriguez has coached. Plus, Mallet may be slowish, but he is not afraid to tuck and run when needed. He is a big boy, hard to take down.

Hey Petrino haters, check out the article in the B’ham News by Kevin Scarbinski. He interviewed Petrino’s agent. If the agent told the truth, then A. Blank is the real snake in this situation. The corporate armtwisting that Blank is accused of by the agent is exactly the stuff I saw when I worked for large corporations. If Blank keeps running the Falcons as if it is the “Depot”, then that sports team will be even more devalued.

Terry Bowden believed he was going to be canned at the end of the season (he probably was), so he abandoned the team in the middle of the season, leaving Coach Oliver (the DC) to lead for the rest of the games.
Bowden wasn’t AU’s coach when the acts that earned the probation occurred. That coach was Pat Dye.

ATL Gator, I heard a rumor somewhere that Bowden got ran out of Auburn by Bobby Lowder (spelling?), the same guy who lent the plane to the Auburn AD to secretly interview Booby Petrino. From what I’ve heard, that guy has a ton of power down there. May or may not be true though, the first part at least. Maybe some of y’all Auburn fans know better than I.
As for Cutcliffe, he was (and is) twice the coach Chan Gailey was. It don’t think even hardened Tech fans would admit that Ole Miss is an easier job than Georgia Tech. Just look who Ole Miss has to play every year. Duke takes the cake of difficulty though. It’ll be interesting to see how he does up there.
On a final note, I can’t tell you how glad I am that Cutcliffe has left Knoxville. We couldn’t beat Tennessee when he was there. Ole Miss made a gigantic mistake in firing him. Hopefully they next guy Tennessee hires proves to be the next Randy Sanders. I don’t think it’ll be Norm Chow- he has head coach written all over him. Its amazing to me that he is a HC somewhere.
