Is Clemson ready for prime time?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:
1. Is Clemson ready for prime time? I believe I asked this question once before about the Tigers, just as they were getting ready to play Georgia Tech (a game they lost). Clemson has a history of knocking on the door of something special and then coming up short. If the Tigers (8-2) can beat Boston College Saturday night they will go to the ACC championship game. But can they get it done on national TV with a big chunk of the country watching?
2. Can the Bulldog Nation get up two weeks in a row? I talked to a lot of Georgia people who were in Sanford Stadium last Saturday and they said it was one of the best atmospheres ever. No question the crowd had an impact on the game. Can the Georgia people bring that same passion to Saturday’s game with Kentucky? There will be no black jerseys. Mark Richt won’t send the team onto the field after the first touchdown. It will just be 60 very important minutes of football and a game Georgia must win to have any hope of getting to Atlanta.
3. Can Notre Dame upset Duke? I’m serious. Have we seen anything this season to make us think Notre Dame (1-9) is better than Duke (1-9)? Duke coach Ted Roof began this season on a 20-game losing streak so he needs for something good to happen this week and next week against North Carolina. Beating the Irish at Notre Dame Stadium, something six other teams have done this season, would constitute as good news for Roof.
4. Will Urban Meyer turn Tim Tebow loose? If Tebow can score seven touchdowns on the road against South Carolina, what can he do at home against Florida Atlantic (5-4)? Tebow is definitely back in the Heisman Trophy race after rolling up 524 total yards last week. How long will Meyer stick with his young QB on Saturday?**
5. Which Arkansas team is going to show up against Mississippi State? Two weeks ago the Hogs ran for 541 yards against South Carolina. Last Saturday the Tennessee defense played its second best game of the season (the best was against Georgia) in beating Arkansas rather easily (34-13). Arkansas (6-4) needs to beat Mississippi State on Saturday or it runs the risk of finishing the season with three straight losses and a record of 6-6. That would not be good for coach Houston Nutt, whose team plays at LSU in the season finale on Nov. 23.

1. Clemson - No. Tommy’s been choking in the big games since he was Offensive Coordinator at Auburn.
2. Georgia - The cynic in me wants to know what “motivational technique” Richt will need this week. Sooner or later, they’ll have to get back to playing the big games without gimmicks.
3. ND vs. Duke - I’m picking Duke. Mainly because I just don’t like Charlie Weis.
4. Tebow - If I were Meyer, I’d be very tempted to start the backup and let Tebow sit one out. But I’m not Meyer and I don’t think Tebow has any risk of getting splinters.
5. Arkansas - The Hogs seem like a team headed for rock bottom. MSU, on the other hand, has gotten some much needed confidence and is ready for someone else to be at the bottom of the heap in the SEC West. Nutt might want to start thinking about what’s he’ll be doing next year.
6. Auburn - We’re off this week. Hopefully that helps prepare for the Iron Bowl next week.

I certainly don’t blame Herschel. I think Spurrier is a great coach, but I’m sick of his mouth too and it is past time for someone to call him out.
I can’t blame Spurrier for not wanting to fight Herschel. It isn’t just that Herschel is bigger and stronger, he is also highly trained in the martial arts, a fourth degree black belt. Spurrier would be out cold in a matter of seconds.
It is time for Spurrier to STF up. Or take Herschel up on his challenge.

For you UGA fans, why can’t the game itself be enough of an incentive for the Dawgs? Is Knowshon saying “Coach Richt, if you don’t let me dance like a fool I wont play hard.” I guess a chance for an Sec title is not enough incentive, but black jerseys……sure coach I’ll play hard. Will you let me do the funky chicken on the sideline? It will be fun to see the Dawgs dancing and acting like fools in a game they lose. Unfortunately it won’t be at Tech.

As far as Georgia vs Kentucky this weekend I believe Georgia will be ready to play. They better be, because Kentucky is really good on offense. They have improved a lot on defense this year, although they are not good against the run and Georgia is really running the ball well. In fact, our offense seems to be playing as well as any team in the country the past 3 games.
Georgia’s defense is not as good as last year’s but we have a better defense than Kentucky and usually the team with the better defense wins.
The line is 7!/2 and that seems about right to me.

Thank god we don’t have to watch Brandon Cox this week. Mofo can’t complete a 7 yd dump pass.
Is it just me or does Kansas coach Mark Mangino look like he ate his right guard.
Do you think that with this cooler weather that Stafford and Cox are spooning each other a little tighter at nite?
Why didn’t Bammer hire Croom? The only thing I can think of is because he’s black. There is no other reason that makes sense. I hate it when people play the race card, but why would you bypass a successful alum and coach from T-town to hire a boob? And now you have the devil working for you.
I heard that Satan was so upset after Sat loss that he was too distraught to tell any lies.

Clemson has a good chance against BC with Harper at QB & BC has been down as of late.
Dawgs will beat Kentucky because of continued offensive balance & enough defense to win. Woodson will get his passing yards but the Dawgs D will get a couple of INT’s.
Duke openly & publicly admits they don’t care about football & they will probably beat ND. Truly sad.
Urban Meyer would be smart to only play Tebow in the first half but if history holds true he will have him in there up until the last play even when they’re up by 35.
Miss. State will cause Arkansas to play ugly & beats PIG U in a low scoring defensive game.
Just curious, what happens with Saban if Auburn beats Bama this year & again next year?

1) Clemson seems to play hot/cold too often. Depends on which team shows up. Inconsistent would be an apt word to describe them. 2) Some teams (LSU, VaTech, Clemson) bring that atmosphere EVERY single game. Since we found out last week that Sanford stadium is still capable of rocking why not rock it EVERY game? 3) Fight to avoid the double digit loss season. As Wei$$ said “better laugh at us now….” You know that letter of support that Fulmer got? 200 players, alum stating their support. Look for one for Wei$$ except asking for his dismissal. 4) Meyer is an idiot when it comes to Tebow. Since they aren’t going to win anything else this year he will make “Mr. 2yrds Tebow” play the entire game increasing his TD total. He will probably end up getting injured at some point in this game getting hammered running a crossing pattern as wide receiver when he throws the pass to himself a little high. Leading rusher, passer and receiver. What’s next? Kickoff and punt returns? 5) Hope Miss State beats Arkansas. Arkansas will run through LSU and win. It has just been that kind of season.

Hey KR, sure, the Dawgs got a boost from the black jerseys, but they still had to perform on the field. Gimmicks don’t win games, good teams do. Just ask Charlie Weis. He would reincarnate Knute Rockne and make Ara Parseghian and Dan Devine honorary coaches if he thought it would improve his team. But he knows it doesn’t matter. The black jerseys certainly didn’t win the game against Auburn, either.

H.Walker continues to be an embarrassment to all. Vastly overhyped in College. Quite possilby the single most overrated running back in NFL history. His trade made the Cowboys franchise during the Johnson era while singlehandedly destroying the Vikings.
His USFL career was nondescript, and now his limited intellect is there for all to see. Quite sad really!

David-ATL14, please check your prescription medication. Sounds like you are mixing some that shouldn’t be mixed. Please call for a taxi before you hit the road this morning. BTW, IBM is running a 25 greatest college players this season. So far HW hasn’t been listed in the #’s 25 to 11. Probably won’t be listed in the 10-2 either. That leaves #1. Ask anybody that knows football and for the college level they would pick HW for their all time team RB. He was the best in college EVER. His pro career was somewhat diluted by the USFL but that trade with the Vikings proved his worth in the league. He was still very productive when you figure in his receiving yards, rushing yards and return yards. BTW, IMO Barry Sanders was the best pro RB ever.

Not sure what school you’re a fan of, David-ATL14, but you might want to check your facts. Vastly overhyped in college? I beg to differ. In 3 years at UGA he rushed for more yards than anyone not named Tony Dorsett did in 4. In that time the Dawgs went 33-3, with losses in 2 of those games to the eventual National Champs. He rushed for over 2,000 yards in a USFL season, and had nothing to do with how he was used in NFL offenses, which was a travesty. You might not like him or his choice of schools, but you can’t diminish his value to UGA. Your ignorance and bias show for trying.

I think the Dawgs and the fans will be ready on Saturday. There is a lot at stake and the team has a newfound sense of confidence. Besides, no way do those guys let Kentucky humiliate them 2 years in a row. The defense is starting to make plays. They make more plays on saturday and Know-Mo and T-Brown run the ball right down the ‘cats’ throats. Throw in an occassional downfield bomb to keep them honest.

Walker is the best college football player ever.
He also spent his prime in the USFL and still is one of only 6 NFL players with 60 rushing and 20 receiving TDs.
He also ranks in the top 20 all time in the NFL for most all purpose yards.

Methinks “sickofUGA” is simply “sickofUGA” squashing his bugs every year. It’s a game…it’s supposed to be fun. I can understand your difficulty grasping the concept, as it has not been much fun being a bug the last few years, has it!? Maybe if Chan Gailey could spend more time thinking of ways to liven up his team rather than running from the Technerds calling for his job every-other-game, you’d better understand how a football program is supposed to operate. Sounds like sour grapes to me…funny, I thought yellow jackets liked rotting fruit (a fair comparison of the Gnats football program). See you soon!

David-ATL14 your bitterness toward a fine and successful man like Herschel Walker says a lot about you.
Herschel has been very successful financially since he retired and he has always been known as a fine christian man who gives back to the community. He left college early for huge dollars, but he was the top student in his graduating class in high school and his academics at Georgia were sound.
His athletic accomplishments in both college and professional football speak for themselves. Perhaps you heard, he won the Heisman trophy. Based on what you wrote you take the position you are more qualified to make that determination than all the voters. Tell us, what are your qualifications to make that judgment? What have you done in your life that suggests you have any credibility when it comes to criticizing accomplished athletes or anybody else for that matter?
Tell us, David. What are your credentials that give you any credibility?
As Theodore Roosevelt said, “It is not the critic who counts, nor the man who points out how the strong man stumbled or the doer of deeds could have done them better”. You must be what Roosevelt called one of those “cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.”

Clemson will not beat BC. BC is still reeling from that loss to FSPew and will get a BIG win over Clemson Saturday night.
Georgia will redeem itself against Kentucky. That loss last year hurt more than losing to Vandy. As for all of the critics of UGA’s newfound ‘tude: lighten up. YOU lose to a team 15 times in 17 years and see what YOU come up with for motivation. Maybe GT needs some gimic for its team. All that $hit they talked after that HUGE win over Notre Shame backfired on them.
Can Notre Dame upset Duke? I’m just enjoying THAT question…who’d a thunk it

The Dawgs defense has some maturing left to do. They’ve seasoned much this year but not battle hardened just yet. They are still susceptible to giving up points and not as disciplined as we’d like to see against the penalties But They have as much speed and talent as any defense in the country and luckily for us I think they hold Woodson to a minimum mostly in pass coverage. Not dissin Tebow but Woodson is the best QB this defense has faced to date. It’d be great if we can keep him pressured but he’s no Brandon Cox. He’ll move avoid it and still throw downfield. Excellent pass coverage against Kentucky and the Dawgs hot offense beats’em. Take Georgia and give up the points. Dawgs by 13

To David Atl-14
Your way off base about Walker’s stats. He was a offensive machine. Wickopedia descibes his stats even without his USFL stats as “outstanding”. He was one of the best backs ever in terms of both running and receiving. Was he the best back ever? NO! But a whole heck of alot better than you give him credit for. He wasn’t overhyped, he almost single handedly won the championship for us when we beat a bigger and stronger Notre Dame team. He had heart, something it appears you don’t.
By HeadKnocker
November 15, 2007 1:33 PM | Link to this
David-ATL14 you are an idiot. Your comments are some of the most off-base that I have ever seen on a sports blog like this.
I went to UGA in 1981, Herschel Walker’s sophomore year. I joined a fraternity that happened to include HW’s Wrightsville QB and blocking back. Herschel used to join us for dinner at our fraternity house quite often and I never, NEVER, met a more honorable, more polite person in my life. He is extremely articulate and, in case you weren’t aware, graduated from UGA with his degree even though he already had millions from his USFL and NFL career.
Even without taking his USFL numbers into account, his NFL stats are outstanding. In 12 NFL seasons, Walker gained 8,225 rushing yards, 4,859 receiving yards, and 5,084 kickoff-return yards. This gave him an impressive 18,168 total combined net yards, ranking him high among the NFL’s top 20 all-time leaders in that category. 10 years after his retirement, he still ranks 8th in all-purpose yardage. He also scored 82 touchdowns (61 rushing and 21 receiving). Walker is the only player to have 10,000+ combined rushing and receiving yards and 5,000+ combined return yards(all of which were on kickoff returns). And also the only player to gain 4,000 yards three different ways: rushing, receiving, and kick off returns. He is one of six players (Jim Brown, Lenny Moore, Marcus Allen, Marshall Faulk, and Thurman Thomas) to exceed 60 TDs rushing and 20 TDs receiving. This is all the more impressive considering that he spent his first three years in another league.
You obviously have a bias against this great athlete for some reason. It is proabably difficult to see the real Herschel with you head stuck up your A$$.

David Atl-14: Not only are you an idiot, but then having a second post right behind your first about how great you are is pretty pathetic. There is a universal consensus among college football experts that Herschel was the best, if not in the top two, players to ever play college football. Maybe when he gets done crushing Spurrier, you can step in the ring.
And Roswell Ed, why do you constantly make sexual comments about 18 and 19 year old men? Either you are just a crude idiot or a sexual pervert who needs to spend more time in mid-town and less time on the college football boards.

David Atl-14,
Herschel was also and still remains one of the most humble athletes you will meet. You don’t see that often with some one who possesses that much talent. What did he do every single time (and that was quite a few times) he scored a touchdown? Gave the ball right back to the ref and never drew any attention to himself.

As a UGA fan what concerns me is how UGA is winning. Its sad to think that most of the athletes if they weren’t football players would find it difficult to be admitted to UGA under the current admission standards and making matters worse is the “thug” like attitude that has become prevalent among the players harkening back to the infamous University of Miami teams. Coach Richt, don’t forget he came from Miami, has even less control over his players now with his questionable motivational tactics. I am concerned that his tactics will backfire and bring substantial embarassment to the school much like the basketball program continues to do.

GM, what thug like attitude? Can you provide examples? And don’t throw out the UF celebration that was a anomaly. Or the Kelin celebration penalty during the Auburn game, did you see the look coach gave him?

Herschel Walker! Imagine running into you here. I, ahh, uh, thought you were in Dallas today. How’s it going, Dog? He he…say, I hope you didn’t take that recent exchange personally. We’re, uhh, still cool, right? (backing away) Excuse me while I go change my underwear…he he…Anyone know where the back door is to this place?

I make the spooning comments because pictures of those two dudes spooning each other at TMS are very funny and I like to remind the Bulldog nation about that.
Do you have pix of u spooning a dude on the net and so u think it’s all right?
I know there are none of me on the net and the reason for that is that I’ve never spooned another dude!!!!!
Spooner or not I’d trade him for our Cox any day and I wouldn’t care one bit if he and Kodi Burns started dating.
And for the dude that called me an idiot for saying HW was the best CFB ever, name one better.
I’m 40 and he’s the best I’ve ever seen.
Ask Bill Bates
Now if you want to go back and tell me Red Grange or Jim Thorpe or Night Train Lane were the best I can’t argue that b/c I never saw ‘em play.
The only guys I’ve seen a lot of from back then are that mule Gus that kicked the 100 yd FG he was pretty good, and Fred Flintstone was a hell of a player and Spearchucker Jones could really tote the rock and don’t forget about Paul Crew he was clutch in the last minute of a game.
So go ahead and name one better.
The rest are just stories from the past for me.

GM:
As a dawg fan, what is most concerning to me is the huge stick that is apparently burried up yours and many others a*******es lately. It is deeply upsetting to me that we have fools like you claiming to be a “fan” of our team during one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory. I would very much like to know what actions have prompted you to spew stupid remarks, such as that we have “thugs” on our team.
Let me be clear. I do NOT like the thug mentality that is prominent throughout much of our youth (and the Falcons). The problem I am having with these remarks is that I don’t see it… I just don’t see it… How are they acting like thugs? You guys sound like a bunch of home-grown boys from the south that “like those colored boys for football, just not all that rap music and dancin’.”
Do us a favor Saturday and give your tickets to someone who actually supports our team.
What a freaking douchebag…

I wouldn’t classified what Coach Richt, is doing a gimmick ,just something that brings spirit into what football is passion, your out there grinding every play you need a release from the norm,I would use a better term how about ( fun ) that simple and that’s what I see.

The next gimmick is black panties and bras. Seriously, how does a team that can’t win its own half-conference get into the BCS ? What newly rigged version of the SEC controlled BCS is this ?

You are so funny. Auburn is without a doubt the most racist campus. The only students that are black are the athletes. They have the lowest % of black students in the SEC.

In case you haven’t heard, the SEC is the best conference in college football and a SEC team win two losses is worth two undefeated teams from others conferences (ACC being the exception, we are worth 3 teams there).

GM is right, but not just about UGA. Most of the players would never apply to college much less be admitted if held to the same standards as the general student population.

These are the “Billy Madison” Blogers. Having the pleasure of reding some of them , we are all offically a whole lot dumber. Mostly I have learned these people don’t want to talk football. For some sick a$$ reason they hate UGA worse than they like their own team. Most of them pull for 2cnd tier teams that can’t win a meaningful game. Therefore, they get on the UGA Blogs and to whine like the little Biaaaaaaatches they really are.

Herschel overhyped? Same as saying Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, John Elway, et al. were overhyped.
What planet, or more accurately, what North Ave trade school do you frequent?
Herschel Walker is in the company of a select few of the greatest to ever play the college game.

roswell ed,as an auburn alum I should say that you have done us proud.Yes we talk smack and you were the first blogger to admit that we got our buts kicked and then some. Crow tastes like crap (not chicken). Auburn is a great program and who knows, next year we may go all the way to the NCG. Having grown up in the shadow of Stanford, I would rather bask in the sun at Jordan-Hare any given Saturday. Auburn lost to UGA this year. I give UGA credit but Uga fans don’t get used to it. It doesn’t happen often. Not a fair weather fan here! War Da*m Eagle!

I just have to weigh in on Clemson. In the past their quarterback was head choker, but this young kid is a gunslinger and seemingly unafraid of any situation. BC is reeling after losing two big games, and Clemson is a better team. Look out, this one could be thrashing at the hands of Clemson. The other is the Tech-UGA Dumb A**’s that continually take their BS to every forum. The Tech-UGA game wasn’t even discussed by Barnhart’s column.

BC will give CLEMSON another headache - - If not, the OLE BALL COACH will.
UGA will beat either Kentucky or GT, but not both - -
Somebody said VIRGINIA was an “inferior” team to Tech, and should not have nosed us out, as they did. If that’s so, how come they’re leading their division, at near season’s end?
RAZORBACKSwill beat CROOM,but only by a couple of points.
More UGA players will be arrested for theft, drunken night spot fights, etc., come January. Reason: When football season ends, they’re bored, because they have nothing to do.
