Auburn wins a street fight against the Dawgs
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We were 7-3 last week because we picked Alabama to upset LSU. With about three minutes left that pick was looking pretty good but Les Miles rolled the dice and won again.
That gives us a record of 68-32 as we head down the home stretch.
Here, without apology or a lot of intelligent thought, is another Fearless Friday Forecast.
1. Auburn at Georgia: The Bulldogs feel pretty good about themselves and rightfully so with impressive wins over Florida and Troy. But Auburn has three things going for them: 1) They are mean and nasty and will turn this game into a street fight; 2) They have a better defense, and 3) They are the visiting team and for some strange reason, the visitors seem to win this game most of the time. This will be an old fashioned smack-them-in-the-mouth kind of game. That kind of game favors Auburn. Auburn 17, Georgia 13.
2. Georgia Tech at Duke: Yellow Jacket running back Tashard Choice is ready to go and that means Georgia Tech will win, regardless of the opponent. Georgia Tech 31, Duke 14.
3. Arkansas at Tennessee: Tennessee is 5-0 at home and that usually means something. But Tennessee’s defense simply isn’t very good. Unless the Vols can force three or more turnovers, they can’t win. Arkansas 24, Tennessee 21.
4. Florida at South Carolina: The Head Ball Coach would love to knock his former Gators out of the SEC race. If his team were healthy, the Gamecocks would really have a shot. But Florida has too many weapons. Florida 24, South Carolina 14.
5. Alabama at Mississippi State: It’s only a short drive down U.S. 82 for Alabama, but it’s going to be hard for the Crimson Tide to get up after that heartbreaker last week against LSU. Alabama wins an ugly game. Alabama 14, Mississippi State 10.
6. Kentucky at Vanderbilt: Kentucky is still mathematically in the SEC East race while Vanderbilt needs a win to qualify for its first bowl since 1982. Commodores play well but come up short against a rested group of Wildcats. Kentucky 21, Vanderbilt 17.
7. Wake Forest at Clemson: The Tigers control their own destiny in the ACC Atlantic and will have a sellout when the Demon Deacons come to Death Valley. Cullen Harper throws a late touchdown and Clemson wins a close one. Clemson 17, Wake Forest 14.
8. Florida State at Virginia Tech: Florida State quarterback Drew Weatherford is starting to figure some things out and has gone two straight games without an interception. Virginia Tech has the best defense he has seen. Seminoles post their second straight upset. Florida State 17, Virginia Tech 16.
9. Kansas at Oklahoma State: The Jayhawks hung 76 points on Nebraska last week and now the whole world is knocking on their door. Everybody’s talking about the Nov. 24 showdown with Missouri. Okie State pulls the upset. Oklahoma State 14, Kansas 10.
10. Illinois at Ohio State: It is very tempting to pick Illinois because the best time to play Ohio State is the week before the Michigan game. But the No. 1 Buckeyes stumble through this game and get ready to go to Ann Arbor. Ohio State 20, Illinois 17.

The College Football World Accoring to Tony
“Alabama will hold LSU to 17 points.”
Reality - dispite 3 turnovers and 14 penalities, LSU hangs 41 on Bama.
Anthony, continues his annual installment of making an assclown comment about LSU football. The 2006 installments were:
(1) LSU will have a disappointing season.
(2) JaMarcus will start the year as the starting QB, but will go to the sidelines shortly.
(3) Bama will beat LSU on Baton Rouge.
Tony, thanks again for giving Bama the kiss of death* against LSU once again.

TB,
Last week before the LSU/Bama game you announced live on CBS in front of a national audience that you thought GA had the best chance to win the SEC East. However, here you picked Auburn to win the game so I am guessing you now no longer think UGA wins the East? You really flip-flopped quickly in a week’s time…

Whenever there is a game between big rivals this year, you have always picked the wrong team to win…i.e. Alabama vs LSU, UGA vs FLA
So thanks for picking AU, b/c we all now know UGA will win.
Thanks bony tony

I agree with all but two of your picks. I just can’t see Florida State winning back-to-back big games. I really think the game against BC was a fluke. Florida State will get caught reminiscing about last week while the Hokies pound them this week. I predict the Hokies win by at least 10. I also think Kansas will stay unbeaten at least one more week. I understand the need to pick an “upset” game this year (since we have one every week), but I think Ohio State has the better chance of getting upset. Kansas will win by at least 14 points. Ohio State will either get upset or win off an Illinois mistake.

I hope you are wrong about the Dawgs but I think you are right. Given that both O-lines are too young there is a good chance one of the starting QB’s will not finish the game which may determine the outcome.
I agree on most of the picks except Ok. St. has no defense so Kansas will roll and Va. Tech will prove that FSU still has big problems on offense.

The “black out” is not a gimmick just good fun that will have no impact on the outcome either way. Does letting your bird fly around the stadium ensure you a win in barnville? Does UGA running on the field help UGA win…NO it is just good fun that is what makes college football great! I would love it if the DAWGS came out in all black. It will have no impact on the games outcome and will not have an outcome in future games. It is just good hype and fun so RELAX everyone and don’t make it into something it isn’t!!!!

Look for my new weekly column..”Why I hate Tennessee and Why You Should Too”. Each week I will list my top 10 reasons why I do not and never will give the Vols any respect. Yes, they did blow the doors off of Georgia this year but I have always hated them. However, if they win the SEC East this year, I will submit an apology and resign my job immediately.

Nothing personal Tony, but I actually prefer it when sports writers pick us (Auburn) to lose. It keeps our team motivated.
The “blackout” has been discussed so much in the media that its potential impact on Auburn has been severely limited. If UGA playing in black jerseys happens at all, look for them to warm up in the red jerseys, go back to the locker room then come out for the game in black jerseys, possibly even black pants and jerseys.
As to the game: way too close to call. In over 35 years of watching, I have never tried to predict an outcome on this game and I’m not about to start now. But, it should be another in a long line of great games in this series.
Are there any other games this weekend?

The reason the line started a pick em for the GA and AU game is that these 2 teams are evenly matched. AU has a better defense up until now and GA has a better offense. I think Cox makes some mistakes and GA wins because of turnovers. Should be fun. Go dawgs. I think this will be a high scoring game. Don’t know why just have a feeling on it. GA 31 AU 27

Tony it is amazing how wrong you have been about LSU over the years. I usually don’t reply b/c I have pretty thick skin but it does get old. Since LSU is out of your readers market they are easy to take shots at. You just look at them as “That” school that is 3 states away. Look, LSU wins, puts players in the pros, has passionate fans & when our players get in trouble we usually kick them off of the team instead of suspending them until they play a big game against an opponent like us. I’ll take our stupid, clueless lucky coach instead.

I’m not going to agree or disagree with Tony’s picks. We really don’t know what’s going to happen on a given Saturday, particularly this season. I can see Auburn winning a close one, and I can see Georgia running away with it. I won’t bet either way. I just hope our SEC teams represent themselves well on national TV once again. On another note, I kinda hope Georgia wears black jerseys. I think it would be cool if they do this only every now and then. I’m a nut about alternate uniforms. But if Penn State ever wore alternate unis, what in the world would the Lions wear? They’ve resembled the guards from The Longest Yard for years.

All SEC games this year have looked like a street fight to me. Even so SEC schools get criticized for scheduling a nonconference arch rival (Tech, Clemson, FSU, etc.) and 3 of whoever else they can get. I wonder how eager Texas, Ohio St., Michigan, USC, Oregon, etc. are to join the street fight once every year. No writer asks that question.

FL 35 SC 14 I can’t see SC winning this game unless turnovers or have about 3 trick play td 5. AL 24 MS St 14 The better team wins 6. KY 31 VAN 24 Should be a good game but KY has Woodson 7. Clemson 17 Wake 14 another close game 8. VT 21 FSU 10 I think VT def will cause FSU to revert to old ways 9. KS 45 OK St 38 both of these defenses are bad. I can’t see a low scoring defensive game 10. Ohio St 35 Ill 10 Don’t buy the hype that this is a good game.

Tony’s right… if it turns into a smash-mouth street fight kind of game, Auburn wins.
If, however, neither defense comes to play (much like AU’s defense in last years game) and the game turns into which offense running up and down the field can score last, then UGa wins.
As a matter of fact, if AU’s defense plays like last year, UGa wins easily.
I think Muschamp will have his boys ready to play this year in Sanford Stadium.

Dawgs win a close nasty fist fight. AU is ready to play but the boys are MAN ENOUGH. This one will go down like the Bama game. I am all for the Black out but it won’t matter if they have pink on once the game starts! Munson moment— Vandy must give UK all they can handle. Dawgs will be beat up and the early start next week will lend itself to first half let down and Woodson will pick us clean before we wake up. You have to respect AU this week for sure. Jeez, something in the air this morning, and it isn’t good. This blog so far is nastier than usual—-some of you not get that raise you were hoping for to bail you out of your sub-prime mortage?
I laugh every time some one, including several of my co-workers, brings up the Vegas line when talking about who is going to win a game. Vegas doesn’t give a crap about who wins or loses or by how much as long as the suckers’ money is evenly balanced. That’s why the line moves all week—-duh.
Rule of thumb: The nastier a fan is about the opponent, the more nervous they are about the outcome of the game.
And finally, I doubt Tony really gives two cr*ps in a rain barrel about your righteous indignation over his “slurs” against your teams as he heads to the bank to cash his multiple paychecks.

Florida has the 2nd best run D in the SEC (better than Auburn’s) and Georgia steamrolled them for 200 yards rushing. All this hype about Auburn’s big nasty scary defense is nonsense. Good point by Azcat. I have argued with people till I am blue in the face trying to get them to understand that the line is just a tool to get even money bet on both sides. You could make a living betting the opponent for Alabama, ND or any school with particularly rabid fans who think their team will win no matter what.
I am a GA fan, went to school there. But I love Auburn for the quality intensity of the rivalry and for the various connections between Auburn and Georgia. I have just spent an hour (of my employer’s time) studying stats of both teams. I would like to predict a Georgia blow out, but it looks to me like a very close game. If the Dogs have an edge it is because the quality of their losses is higher than the quality of Auburn’s losses. Auburn has lost to a great LSU team but also to pretty good but not great Miss State and USF. Georgia has lost to a mediocre SC but it was so early in the season I think that our young players had not yet matured enough to handle the pressure. We lost a game to UT that was one of the most mediocre, lacking intensity games that I have seen a Georgia team play since Donnan was the coach. I hope that was an anomaly due to the emotion of the season. If the intense Dogs show up they win a close one. If the flat, unemotional Dogs show, Auburn wins an ugly, but close game.

Auburn will win. UGA hasn’t faced a defense like Auburns yet. Knowshon is good, but he won’t have over 100 yards…AU kept McFadden to around 50 yards and a 2 ypc average. McFadden is the best RB in the sec. UGA is not a legitimate top 10 team too. After this game, they will be just out of the top 20 (21 or something).

I agree with you. I’ve heard way too much comparison of the AU/AR game when infact the comparison is moot. LSU and USF showed the weakness of the AU defense with a balanced attack. I think Knowshon would be flattered with the McFad comparison. But the fact is Georgia’s offense is much more dimensional than Arkansas.
I think Auburn has an excellent defense and is going to be tough. The secondary is sometimes suspect but the DL is quick. Stafford can over come it, he has all the weapons to make it look bad. The bigger question in this game is, can the Auburn offense get going and put more on the board than Ga? I believe it’s going to ride on how well Martinez has prepared the Ga defense as to who wins this game

THIS WILL BE A WAR!HIDE THE WOMEN AND THE CHILDREN!ISSUE EXTRA PADS AND BODY ARMOR.
Its one thing to take some Trojans. Is a totally different battle to grab a War Eagle.
I expect nothing less then a see saw back and forth battle. We are going to have some wounded. We are going to lose some. We might lose Larry on this one. His old tired body just may not be able to handle the stress of this game. Hell I may not be able to handle it.Will need to down some corn mash to get a starting jolt.
I think we have the better offense and War Eagle has the better defense( and the best defensive coach in Muschamp).Stafford has to be on and Chandler and the Wide Outs too, because Auburn is going to load the box and say “Moreno, run if you think you can”. Bobo has to call a balanced game, and LEAVE THAT STUPID TRICK PLAY FROM STAFFORD AT HOME!
This game may come down special teams to who makes the biggest kicks, hits, and returns on special teams. And that is where I really like our Dawgs.
Since we dont want Lou ” I cannot motivate a sand gnat” Holtz give the pep talk, I am going to give it.

War Eagle, I thought the same at the beginning of the season regarding LSU. And I thought they were clear cut #1 in the country and I still do. However, KY, Bama, you guys and UF has shown that they can be matched talent wise and beaten. Difference is that crazy a$$ coach they have. Miles is insane with the calls he makes. Based on football knowledge or not. They could easily have 4 loses. Perfect season for a crazy coach to triumph.

Tony- Good picks and I agree with all except Auburn will get their lunches handed to them. Very little offense from AU verse the dual threat from UGA. It will be similar to the Florida game.

My archrival Martinez will actually dial up some blitzes and beat Muschamp at his own game. That will make the Cox of last year’s UGA game show up with multiple turnovers. Dawgs win going away.

Tim…
What have you been smoking??? UGA has a better offense than LSU? Auburn will get their lunches handed to them? You seem to be a typical Dawg zealot who thinks UGA is about three times better than they really are. Auburn owes UGA one for last year, and rest assured they will pay the debt back on Saturday. This game will be a carbon copy of the UT game, with Auburn dominating on both sides of the ball.

HERE is ALL you need to know about the game on Saturday!!!!!
Auburn has the 92nd rated Offense in the COUNTRY= Not very good!!!
Florida’s RUSH DEFENSE is BETTER than AUBURN’s and UGA got over 200 yards on them
Georgia’s D-Fense is 4th in the SEC= Not too bad
Georgia has a running back, Fla didn’t, UGA has a passing game, ARK didn’t so those comparisons don’t mean much!!
Georgia will WIN a fight of a ballgame 27-17!!!

Auburn will put Ga. in the Dog house. Auburn plays good sound defense. They seem to find a way to win. After Sat. Georgia will only be able to look back at the Fla. game as the high for their season. MaFadden will run wild at Knoxville, Vols will never be able to stop him and Ky. will beat the Vols too. Look for Fulmer to gain the hot seat.

http://www.fanblogs.com/acc/006981.php
Mr. College Football has spoken - it’s the Seminoles and Yellow Jackets this year in the ACC. Tony Barnhart, Mr. College Football at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, says FSU and Georgia Tech represent the best of their respective divisions.

I think the AU-GA game will be another great one and very close. It’s a great rivalry where both teams and fans respect one another.
However, some of the DAWGS comments are flawed.
GA fans are the ones who keep heralding Knowsh*t as the second coming so it’s natural for AU fans to point out how it’s defense held the best two back tandem in the SEC to their lowest output of the season. Sure they’re not a balanced team like LSU but no one else has been able to stop them. I would also shy away from any comparisons to LSU. If GA makes it to the SEC game (and they should as Tenn will implode and NOT stop the ARK running attack) they will find out what balance really means.
The reference to USF’s balance attach is poor as well. AU lost that game straight up but 5 turnovers (most inside their own 20) didn’t help. At least AU admits their defeats vs. GA who uses terms like “we didn’t show up” or “they got lucky”. Hey you get beat - and badly at times. Consistency has never been a GA virtue.
Finally, how can GA fans list their losses as “quality” losses? Tenn and SC? You will be the SEC east champion but only because you’re queen of the pigs.
Again, I think it’s a close game - the Vegas boys have it close (interesting given the home team usually is spotted 3 points off the top). I just want the DAWGS to get real - you have an average team - AU has an average team. We’re both young and will be much better next year - now THAT will be a game.
God Bless the SEC! And please don’t drink and drive.

Chase-
I forgot to answer your question the other night about “hiding” behind my name and being a closet Tech fan. Well you forgot to listen to your mama and go to bed.
Truth is I didn’t go to college - I’m not that smart and have little money (hence the name SimpleMan).
I did clean toilets at Auburn stadium a few seasons (during the Barfield years) and spent more time throwing up on bad play calling and a waste of talent (3 backs in the same backfield make All Pro and you can’t post a winning season?). However, I wouldn’t say I am a closet AU fan. I just didn’t like you throwing stats out like you had that turrets or something.
You GA boys just seem to mix up your facts and such. So I like to jump in from time to time to set the record straight.
Also, go easy on Tony. I cleaned toilets at the AJC for a spell as well and he’s good people. In fact, they (the AJC) are all good people and it’s a shame that hardly anyone reads news anymore. Too busy checking to see if Britney forgot to wear panties. Oh but I digress.
Son your mama is really calling now - go to bed and rest up for the big game. Please don’t drink and drive.
God Bless the DAWGS!

Tony my picks vs yours
My gut feeling says the Dawgs come out and play the way are capable and win a close, hard fought game. BTW Georgia is the better overall team.
I agree with this pick because Duke isn’t a very good team.
While I hope Arkansas wins, my gut says the Vols who are a different team at home vs. the road will play better on defense and will win because Arkansas is one dimensional team.
This one I think South Carolina will win because they were humiliated by Arkansas last week and not many people are giving them a chance.
Alabama should win but they are coming off an emotional loss to LSU last week, this game is a toss up. Al in a close game.
I agree with this pick.
I agree with this one as well.
FSU in a close one- both teams have great defenses but FSU seems to be getting their act together on offense as the offensive line has started to jell.
Kansas will win as they are one of the best teams in the country this year. Well balanced on both offense and defense.
Illinois in an upset.

Who knows? The recent home field disadvantage in this series makes it entirely unpredictable. I predict Auburn, but that’s nothing more than a gut feeling based on Auburn’s defense and UGA’s inconsistent quality of play. Should be a good game to watch in any event.
Good grief. The fact that a Duke-vs-Tech match-up is even worthy of discussion speaks volumes about the present state of the Tech program. Like the political challengers always say, “it’s time for a change.”
Arkansas runs up and down the field, and back again. The Tennessee defensive line better have their game of the season, or their team will surely lose.
Yes, the Ol’ Ball Coach would love to win this one nearly as much as beating UGA, but unless the Gators have a meltdown, the Evil Genius does not yet have the quarterback or depth to play four quarters against the Gators.
Tony is right. Bama wins, but it will be uncomfortably close and in doubt most of the game.
Welcome to the New SEC, where the Kentucky-Vanderbilt game IS relevant to these two teams and others. Football is Lexington? What next, basketball in Gainesville?
Wake Forest is a better coached team than Clemson. Clemson loses too many games that they should win. Cheers for the over-performing underdog school from North Carolina.
This game will tell us a lot about the direction of the Seminole program. Win, and it may appear to the game in which the corner was turned. Lose, and the Seminoles may have several more years of winter, with or without Bobby.
Miss Scarlett, I lied. I don’t know nuthin’ ‘bout birthin’ no babies … and even less about the psychology of a second-tier Big XII match-up like this one. Well, okay, If pushed I’ll randomly pick Kansas because it’s fun to see basketball schools like UK and WFU win football games.
Buckeyes, but the Fightin’ Illini will keep it interesting. Prove us wrong, Zooker, and you’ll get a big bear hug from your old friends in the SEC.

Hey, Gabe. Let’s take a look at [your predictions] (http://www.ajc.com/blogs/content/shared-blogs/ajc/cfb/entries/2007/11/09/auburnwinsa_s.html#comment-1749232)
Auburn will win. … WRONG UGA hasn’t faced a defense like Auburns yet. … REALLY? Auburn didn’t look that tough to me. Knowshon is good, but he won’t have over 100 yards … WRONG (101 yards) UGA is not a legitimate top 10 team too. … REALLY? So is, say, LSU a “legitimate” top 10 team in your opinion? Because they barely beat Auburn. The Dawgs rolled ‘em. After this game, they will be just out of the top 20 (21 or something) … WRONG … Try top 8. Better luck on next week’s edition of Gabe’s Bodacious Picks.

Tony,
You are the MOST overrated so called college football expert I know of. You have a penchant for stating the obvious and seldom bring ANY real insight. You love Steve Spurrier and Bobby Bowden with Urban Meyer a close third. (Hum, sounds like a Florida love fest). You seldom give Mark Richt credit and jump on the Dawgs bandwagon only when it is obvious to EVERYONE else that we are truly good.
Tony, please don’t ever pick the Dawgs because you are not worthy of being right when we are victorious.
One last thing, Bulldog nation DON’T EVER buy Tony’s books (e.g., What It Means to Be a Dawg). Since he fails to give us much credit, why should he profit from our success? No love from Tony should equal no money from book sales.

Tony,
You really must be feeling like an idiot this morning… Did you really think that Auburn would beat UGA? You must be tapping into some of Coker’s stash… Have I said I hate the VOLS? I was at the game and have been to most home games for the past few years. I think the fans were awesome. Probably the loudest I’ve ever heard Sanford. It was nice to see the BullDawg Nation all adhere to the request and bring out the BLACK!!! Have I said I hate the VOLS? Because I was at the UGA game, I didn’t see any of the TN game. Their defense must’ve shown up like they did against us. All we can hope for is Kentucky come out with a win. But, we really can’t worry about them. We gotta just keep pouring it on in our games and let the chips fall as they may. If TN does make it to Atlanta, they could really be an embarrassment. I’m sure LSU is pulling for them to win out. I don’t think they want to play us, the roll we’re on now. Have I said I hate the VOLS?
GO DAWGS!!! Keep it up…
