LSU must be a team of destiny

Five things we learned over the weekend:

1. LSU must be a team of destiny: There is no other explanation for the fact that LSU lives on the razor’s edge and has escaped so many times to stay alive in the national championship race. Some teams just have the ability to make mistakes and overcome them with talent. LSU is just such a team. It could be that the Tigers are simply meant to play for the BCS national championship in New Orleans. And if they play Ohio State, the Tigers will win.

2. Darren McFadden is back in the Heisman race: When he’s completely healthy, No. 5 of Arkansas is the best football player in America. After running for 321 yards against South Carolina, he may follow it up with another big game against Tennessee, the No. 9 rushing defense in the SEC. Matt Ryan of Boston College threw three interceptions on Saturday and thus his chances were hurt. Now it’s McFadden, Ryan, and Oregon QB Dennis Dixon.

3. Alabama is going to be just fine: What we really learned Saturday is that when Nick Saban gets some players, the Crimson Tide is going to be tough. Alabama was really outmanned against LSU but found a way to make enough plays to lead the game until the final three minutes. When Saban bumps up the talent level, and that is happening right now, the Crimson Tide will be a regular contender in the SEC West. The sheer fact Alabama played in such a high profile game in November means that Saban has had a successful first season.

4. Georgia Tech needs to be careful: Georgia Tech’s 27-3 loss to Virginia Tech was an awful performance by the Yellow Jackets. There is no way to sugarcoat that. And right now a lot of Georgia Tech fans want to throw Chan Gailey under the bus. But those people need to look at the young talent in the program and the way recruiting has been on an up-tick the past couple of years. Are you ready to start over and compete with a whole bunch of schools that are going to be looking for coaches in December? It’s easy to say you should change coaches when you think your program should be at another level. But it is not always the right thing to do. Just ask Nebraska. Just ask Ole Miss.

5. Saturday will be Knowshon Moreno’s kind of game: Moreno looks like a kid who, the tougher the game is, the more he likes it. Well, Georgia’s New Jersey Jet is really going to like Saturday’s game with Auburn. You know that Auburn’s defensive coordinator, former Bulldog Will Muschamp, will have his troops ready for Moreno. If you’re going to Saturday’s game, better leave the women and children at home. This one will be for men only. It will be standing room only in the training room on Sunday.

I agree about LSU and McFadden. Regarding GT/Gailey, it seems fairly simple to me. Chan is the man through at least 2008, unless they lose 2 of the next 3. If he wins 3 of the next 3 he will be viewed as a good coach again. If they lose to UGA I would think the AD will put him on notice for 2008. They can afford to fire him after next year, probably cannot this year unless they hit rock bottom by losing to either Duke or UNC. Tony is right about the recruiting. That is the frustrating part, we all see a lot of talent and it appears to be underutilized.

LSU better hope OSU beats Michigan, because Les Miles worse nightmare would happen — they would get stuck playing a Pac 10 team (Oregon) who has the athletes and team to beat the tigers.

LSU has “it”, the mysterious knack for simply making key plays at key moments. This team reminds me of the Tenn. team that won the NC back in the 90s. That team also had things go their way at the most important times (Remember that Arkansas game?). When teams play this way they are very tough to beat.

Saban is building something. If the ‘Bama crazies do not drive him nuts first he can do some great things. The next few years will be interesting. Roll Tide!

Tony, I am disappointed in today’s blog. How can you not mention FSU’s victory over the #2 team in the nation??? Watching FSU play the other night was like watching an FSU squad of the past destroying someone’s dreams of making it to the big time. It showed that if FSU can get discipline and continuity then it would be in a situation to be playing in a BCS bowl. The BC game was no fluke. The talent is there. Execution is key

Go Noles! Here’s to 12 more quarters of great play and 3 big wins!

The Dawgs have “new Life” thanks to Bama spanking the Vols a few weeks ago.. Saturday was the “Trap game” (Great W vs UF & focusing on AU).. Dawgs survived..

Saturday will be a Mano a Mano game for BOTH teams.. UGA executes on O & tackles on D, UGA wins.. Cox has lead feet & the Dawgs ends will collapse on him time & time again!!

Here’s hopeing Run DMC goes for 250 on the ‘teers & open the path for the Dawgs!!

Dawgs need to TCOB starting Saturday!!

Go Dawgs!!

  1. Look, I like LSU as much or more than any other realistic BCS contender. They are a very good football team, and I agree that they should beat Ohio State in a hypothetical BCS match-up, but haven’t we learned anything from this season so far? LSU is not superhuman; Kentucky beat them, and Florida, Auburn and Alabama could have beaten the Bayou Bengals if the ball had bounced their way. It’s still way too early, just like it was way too early two weeks ago to be prognosticating about South Florida and Boston College … LSU still has to play Arkansas and the SEC East champion, whoever that may be.

  2. No single player is dominant in this year’s Heisman chase, and McFadden is as good a choice as any, but with Arkansas’ so-so team record and lack of national television exposure, I think McFadden has a little bit of an up-hill climb to place first in the Downtown Athletic Club’s final poll.

  3. Is ‘Bama really back? Hmmm. Or are they just boxing above their own weight for a new coach with a reputation? Let’s see what happens next season, when they won’t be able to sneak up on any other SEC team. Nick Saban may find that his Tide is not all that different from the Evil Genius’ Gamecocks in talent or quality of coaching.

  4. Georgia Tech needs to be “careful?” Huh? What Georgia Tech needs is a new coach and some quality wins. Chan ain’t the cure for what ails Tech.

  5. No bets in the AU-UGA game. The recent home-and-away reverse home field advantage in this series is just too weird for words.

TB has a point—this may be a bad year to go coach-shopping. And it may be financially prudent to put CG on “probation” just to burn up another year or two of his golden parachute, as well as see if he can develop this talent that he has recruited the last couple years. If he doesn’t develop it, we can 86 him with the clearest of consciences.

It stinks to be DRad. He has to find some way to mollify the fan base and maintain some accountability, without taking it in the shorts financially.

Maybe we need to 86 the QB coach? We have driven away more QB talent than we have retained. That might solve a lot of ills and buy us some time.

Beating UGA will forgive a lot of sins and buy everyone in the Edge Building some time (Chan to get with it or DRad to find a replacement without having to blow a bunch of cash paying Chan off), not to mention winning out altogether.

You hate to have a situation where you have a “dead man walking” as coach, but what alternative do we have (unless some moneyed alums whip out their checkbooks again)? OTOH, what effect does that have on recruiting? The effect may be overstated, but it’s not zero.

Thanks a pantload, Dave No-Braine.

Officating for LSU…..??

14 penalties called on LSU…2 penalaties called on bama….??? 4 calls on the filed that were sent up to the replay booth where an “impartial” official reviewed them and corrected them to LSU’s favor…preventing more of the one siding officating….in bamas favor…

A comment about the officiating: If we get 14 flags again, we should lose, but just a thought……if the replay booth overturned 80% of the reviewable calls this crew made, how much credence do we give the on field crew on the 14 flags that weren’t reviewable? Maybe it is time to move the SEC office out of Birmingham to a neutral site……like Gainsville…or Knoxville….or Oxford……….(sic).

Atlantanole0731, I have to agree with you. You guys played an excellent game Sat. night. It was great to watch. Unexplicably Weatherford played lights out with few mistakes. Congrats on that victory.

Atlanta Gator, great points. What ws Meyer thinking leaving Tebow in for so long? Is he hell bent on getting him hurt? Or hurt with a Heisman. Sorry but Meyer won’t get style points for running it up against Vandy or getting your QB and #1 WR hurt in a meangingless second half. Fool points yes, style points no! Also, I believe I could poke a few TD’s in from 1 yard out so what does Tebow’s record really mean?

Atlanta Gator,

Your killing me man. I can see you at your keyboard typing in your take trying to sound like a diplomatic Gator. I know you have your Gator glasses on as you type.

1) whoever wins the SEC East, you know good and well you had the Gators written in with ink prior to the Ga game. Now your pullng for Auburn so bad, you’ll be on the floor by the time the 4th qtr. comes around.

2)everybody in the country knows McFadden is the best player in the country exept Gator Fan. Tell Tebow to shake somebody’s hand on the field after a loss first, and Gatornation has pumped this guy up so much early on it’s out of control.

3)Pat Dooley from the G’ville Sun picked So. Carolina over Ark., a good writer, but he put his dadgum Gator glasses on when he made the pick!

4)Get real Gators, this weekends alledgedy big matchup at the end of the yr. has 3-4 in the SEC vs. 3-3. It’s ugly.

5)on a lighter note Gator Fan, I do beleive you will be tough to beat next yr. and you will be the pick for the National title. However, those ole mean Dawg fans and mean ole Coash Richt will show up with Moreno, Stafford & CO (inc. AJ Green).

Have fun Atlanta Gator, but there is now such thing truly as a humble Gator Fan

NASCARfan, I don’t believe so. He might play against Auburn but start? NO! Get more reps than Moreno? NO! Not unless Auburn is stacking up Moreno. Thing is both Moreno and Brown can catch and run. So blitzes better be covered for those screen passes.

Hope our guys start acting like they have seen the end zone. When in doubt guys just hand the ball to the ref. Bounce a couple of times and let it go. These things will kill us against the remaining schedule. Can’t believe LSU survived with 149 yards in yellow hankies.

Todd, I’m glad I’m not the only one who has noticed Tim Teblow’s extreme lack of sportsmanship and graciousness. For all the Gaturd fans to whine about Coach Richt yet convieniently ignore Teblow’s ingracious actions on the field in losing is hypocrisy of the highest order.

The guy is a punk, pure and simple. He’s Superturd, not Superman.

I hope his years as a Gator are spent like this year, foolishly taking on NFL-ready SEC linebackers and safeties in his first 5 to 6 games before he gets hurt as the Gators limp to a weak finish.

This is why everyone who knows SEC football said that the spread option would not work in the SEC.

If Alex Smith had played in the SEC, that stick would’ve been snapped in two. Yeah, Teblow is big, but he’s going to spend the next two years hurt.

And I couldn’t be happier. Like I said, he’s a punk.

Randy Edsall has a contract through 2010, and a team that may win the Big East this year. Why would he want to ruin that by coming to Tech?

By JACKETS FAN

November 5, 2007 10:52 AM | Link to this

I can’t argue with Tony’s logic about the timing of canning Chan Gailey. However, I just don’t see Chan coaching the Jackets to a level that is consistently over 7-5, even with better talent. The reason is that the key position on the field has never been developed…QB. You can have the best team in the nation at 21 positions on the field, but if you suck at QB, you can still lose a lot of games. So unless Dan Rad sees some plan in place where the QB’s under Chan Gailey improve dramatically, he’s got to make a change (tough coaching market or not).

As for those who want to suggest Randy Edsall (head coach at UCONN) as his replacement, let’s get back to reality. First of all, GT doesn’t have a defensive problem. In Jon Tenuta’s tenure as DC, GT has consistently fielded a top ranked defense. Defense aint their problem. Edsall is a coach from the defensive side of the ball. Comparatively, UCONN currently ranks 88th in the nation in passing yards per game, 39th in rushing yards per game, and 42nd in points per game, compared to GT’s 107th, 21st and 73rd respectively. While a couple of the rankings are better, they are still not numbers that scream offensive mind or clever scheme. They need a head coach who brings a proven COLLEGE offense to the table, preferably one that is on the cutting edge (like the spread offense) not one that is from 1945, and a coach with a proven record of developing QB’s. And can anyone name a QB that came out of UCONN that was any good? And as far as program building, Edsall has done a nice job of transitioning UCONN from a Div II to DIV 1A and from an independent to the Big East conference. But his record is no more sparkling than Chan Gailey’s. Edsall is 41-51 since 1998. His first two seasons were at the Div II level and the next four were Div 1A but with no conference games. Since joining the Big East, UCONN has gone 8-4, 5-6, 4-8, (8-1 currently) but has never had a winning conference record until this season. And before you get all excited about their current 8-1 record, check some of the opponents that helped them get to 8-1. Powerhouses like Duke, Maine, Temple, Akron. Wins over a 4-5 Pittsburgh team, 5-4 Rutgers and Louisville (which last season would have been impressive, but not this year) and a win over a ranked South Florida team, but even USF has lost three straight Big East games since being ranked #2 in the nation. What I see is not much better than what Gailey has done at GT.

GT needs to do one of two things. Hire a head coach who runs the spread offense (either a smaller school head coach that runs the spread, or promote an offensive coordinator who runs the spread from a big school), or promote Jon Tenuta to head coach and hire an offensive coordinator that runs the spread offense. Think about it. GT has the makings of a spread offensive team already on roster. They have a dynamic RB in Jon Dwyer (along with some good recruits to add depth at the position to Evans and Roddy Jones). They have a dual threat QB in Josh Nesbitt. They have a quick athletic offense line, with the intelligence to learn the zone blocking scheme. They already have excellent blocking WR’s. I see the possibility for a quick transition and early success.

Tony if you do not think Ohio State, with the loads of talent, are not looking forward to a little redemption vs any BCS Nat’l Championship opponent, you obviously did not know that the code to their practice facility was 4114 all summer. Here’s a sure bet for Saturday…Vols D will do their best bullfighter impersonation (ole’) and McF and Jones will put up some huge rushing numbers on the Vol defense…maybe 400-500. Only way TN wins if they can have some time consuming methodical drives that keep the R’backs off the field. Might get real ugly. What happens if UGA loses to Auburn, UF loses to SOS and UT loses to Arky? Who then will go to Atlanta and represent the East?

By jabster

T-Bone:

If I ran the GTAA and had all the cash I needed at my disposal, Chan would be cleaning out his office as I write. But I don’t, and I don’t.

Is Chan “stale”? Yes. While he has had a .500 or better record in conference play, a winning overall record, and gone to a bowl each year, it’s not what you do—it’s the way that you do it!

Getting blown out in big games (UGA, Clemson, VT, VT again), losing to your rival every year, blowing talent (Bilbo, Hall), not coaching up your players (Reggie L#### Ball), not motivating them to win (UVA, UMD), playing not to lose (WVU), choking on golden opportunities (UGA, UGA again, UGA yet again, and Wake) is not how you do it!

Of course, with a coaching change, we take the risk of hiring the next B### L####—some flash in the pan that had a good year. The more we can do this from a position of relative strength the more we can avoid that.

Ultimately, it’s all about the Benjamins, like it or not. If ticket sales drop off next year, change will happen sooner rather than later.

Randy Edsall is our man.

Quotes below from the UConnHuskies.com site (link at end ??):

  • He is a winner and instills that winning attitude on his team: “In the past five seasons, UConn has finished in the national top 20 for total offense (2003, 2004) and total defense (2002, 2005). Under Edsall’s guidance, the Huskies have defeated members of the Atlantic Coast Conference, BIG EAST, Big Ten, Big 12 and Conference USA during their brief Division I-A tenure.”

  • He stresses academics: “In addition to the great success on the field, UConn has performed admirably in the classroom under Edsall. In three of the past five years, including 2007, UConn was recognized by the American Football Coaches Assocation for its high graduation rate.”

  • He has roots at GT: “Edsall joined the Huskies after completing the 1998 season as the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech, where he helped the 14th-ranked Yellow Jackets complete a 9-2 campaign and earn a New Year’s Day win in the Gator Bowl over Notre Dame. Georgia Tech finished 7-1 in the ACC and earned a share of the league championship with Florida State.”

LSU fans…complain about the officialting all you want but you should look at the entire season. LSU is the most penalized team in the SEC. LSU had 60 yards in personal foul/unsportsmanlike conduct calls. Those are usually not made up calls. If a player takes his helmet off on the field, that is an immediate 15. If you want to look at the difference making, look at the 6 reviewed calls (most ever in a D1 game) and look at how 4 were turned in LSU’s favor. Two of those should have stood as originally called. Not to take away from LSU as I think the run the table the rest of the way and win the SECCG. They made the plays at the end of tha game to win on Saturday and that what matters. BAMA played a great game and after watching the games against LSU and UT, I am VERY excited about the direction of our program!

If the Dawgs learned anything from last year’s game against Auburn, it’s that the Defense needs to be aggressive, pin its ears back, and get after Cox. We pounded him, resulting in several sacks and three picks. Playing that soft, read-and-react D is what got us in trouble against AU in ‘05, and against Tennessee the last two years. On offense, it should be Moreno, Moreno, Moreno, play action pass, Moreno, Moreno…If Auburn is good enough to stuff Moreno, then give them credit because they deserve to win.

Joe Colvin,

Okay, you can’t possibly be trying to compare somebody who ran the spread offense circa 1993 to the spread offense in 2007!!! The spread is everywhere. Texas won a national championship with Vince Young running the spread. Florida won a natl champ with a scaled down version of the spread with Urban Meyer, who coached Utah to an undefeated season running the spread. West Virginia put the Big East on the map with Pat White and Steve Slaton running the spread. Oregon runs the spread with Dennis Dixon and are ranked #3 in the nation. Big time programs run it, while GT runs the old dusty conservative NFL offense of Chan Gailey.

TTech,

Hey bruce- Saying LSU is a team of destiny is not a slight! It takes a fair amount of destiny in the SEC to finish with one loss let alone go undefeated (and LSU still hasn’t made it all the way out with one loss yet). That said, unless the Dawgs can make it to the SEC title game and play the Tigers, I hope they win out and bring another title to the conference. But that’s it! No more national titles for the SEC until Georgia finally wins one again!!!

Knowshon needs relief and I believe the way it will play out is Knowshon is the #1 go to guy with Brown rotating in to throw more diversity in the offense and keep AU off balance. CMR has no history of not playing the younger guy when he is the best athlete at the position.

Q. how many times have the puppies beaten the tigers on their HOME FIELD since 1977? A. 3 For all you DOLTS saying Moreno for Heisman…. Q. how many yards have the tigers given up to the SEC’s leading rushers Mcfadden, Hester, Green- Ellis, and Felix Jones? A. A total of 197 yards or an average of 49 yards per player. Moreno goes for no more than 75 and the Tigers roll as usual between the Hedges 24-10

Anyone notice how Chandler has gotten more sure handed since the early in the season drops. For that matter, it seems all the receivers are doing better.

Stafford still has some errant throws, but at least the chains are moving with the receivers holding onto the ball.

Southerland is still a helluva DAWG, blocking and receiving.

Can’t wait for Saturday. I think its going to be an unbelievable game as most games in this series have been (except for last year :( Anyways I think if we can stop moreno and get pressure on Stafford then we’ll win. Same goes for UGA, if they can stop lester, tate, and fannin as well as get pressure on cox they’ll win. I just hope Richt goes with Brown (being loyal?) cause I think we’ll have a better chance. But that’s why we play the game on the field and not in the blogs. WAR EAGLE!

Advice for GT: - Don’t play to win. Play not to lose five games. That way, you’ll finish better than 7-5. - Drain the clock. Say it’s already half-past 2011. - Never pass. Eliminate the position of quarterback, and direct-snap it to Choice, Dwyer, or Nesbitt. - Quit yelling, “To Hell with Georgia.” Start yelling, “To FSU with Richt.” - Terminate the series with Georgia, since they cheat and you don’t.

Tony - Why is no one in the national media calling for a playoff? The longer the season goes on, the more these polls are proven to be pointless. The system is bogus. Let the polls decide the top 8 and the controversy will be about who is number 8 or 9, and then #1 be decided on the field. Please Tony, start calling for a playoff.

I really can’t agree with Mr. Barnardt about Chan Gailey. This coach has been here for six years and let’s see..hhmm..7-5, 7-6, 7-5, 7-5, 9-5 and looking like 7-5 yet AGAIN!! I don’t want to hear ANYTHING about the issues of Gailey having a “winning season” every year he’s been here. He’s winning JUST ENOUGH to keep his job. Nor do I want to hear crap about this “bowl streak” considering 4 of the past 5 AT LEAST have been bowls that didn’t even exist the year before. If you ain’t in a BCS bowl or bowls like the Gator, Outback, Chick-fil-A or a bowl of that nature, your team is just grabbing at straws for national notarity with cash in bowls. With past coaches, the fans at least, were looking forward to the next season and GOOD solid shot at the ACC or even National Title but with Chan Gailey we ALWAYS are saying “Well, same ‘ol same ‘ol this year too”. That is NOT the staple comment a solid football team wants to hear there fans say. Gailey has wasted, yes I said WASTED so much talent the six years he has been here. We have NEVER had a proven QB outside of spirts of Reggie when he wasn’t throwing interceptions and Bennett has been a bust. I am very dissapointed in his development and performance. So if it’s more of the same’ol smae’ol with Gailey from here on out then he needs to be SHOWN the way out b/c I know die hard Tech fans like my self would like to SOMETIME like to compete for a national title.

Bama is certainly playing better than they did in recent years, but they are a long way from being “back.” I think that the calls went against LSU, plus how many times did LSU turn the ball over? Saban is the most mercenary and unreliable coach in football. He will not be around Bama long enough to make the program competitive.

I’m thinking if UGA is going to win, it is going to come down to the Offense. Auburn’s offense is not up to par with the likes of Teboner, The Great Pumpkin, or the Boy-Troy’s. They can score, but they are stoppable. Having said that, AwwBarn’s D can lay the wood, and figuring out how to beat their D is the key. If Mr Jersey can est the running game early on, Stafford and co. can work the secondary. But these two, Stafford and Jersey-boy must come through for us. We all know that Special K has been consistent, but Keg-lifter 2006 better be on his A game, and I think he will. Our D should be able shake up concrete-feet Cox with a couple of sacks and the rest is history.

Hey NASCARfan:

The spread option will not work in the SEC? Better check your facts, the Gators are #2 in overall scoring and #1 in touchtowns scored in the SEC this season, and that’s with playing against the two best defenses in the SEC (AU and LSU). Yeah your right, the spread option is a complete failure anyone can see that.

Tim Tebow’s a punk? He’s the top rated qb in all of college football and would be a lock for the heisman if he wasn’t a sophomore, heck he may win it anyway. How do you know how many hands he’s shaking after a tough loss? Have you been to all the games and kept an eye on him until he leaves the field? After the “celebration”, do you really want to talk about graciousness? The “celebration” wasn’t classless, but was embarassing to the Dogs and the SEC. Way to represent on national TV, I can just imagine PAC 10 and Big 10 fans thinking “what a bunch of fools running onto the field after a first quarter TD.”

Your a real class act yourself, ” Tebow’s big, but he’s going to spend the next two years hurt…and I couldn’t be happier.” Nice. Your really making the dog nation proud with that one.

“Gators limp to a weak finish”, guess you missed the Vandy blowout on Saturday.

Better watch out, Gators win a three way tie in the east and Auburn and Kentucky back to back will not be easy for the dogs.

I’m ready for your insult packed comeback. I just love it when you, NASCARfan, call someone else a redneck.

Ohio State is NOT the best team in the country. In fact they are probably more like no.9 or 10. But they are by far the best team in the Nig Ten which has become a second tier league. LSU and Oregon play with real men who possess real speed and have the muscle to back it up. LSU has the tougher schedule of any of the Top 5 teams because their SEC schedule is laden with teams that are Top 10 caliber (but don’t have the won-loss records only because they are so good they keep beating each other.)

My dreams include Georgia winning out and knocking LSU out of national champ contention in the SEC championship. Unlike other bloggers here, I’m not scared of the Tigers. Several SEC teams have shown LSU is vulnerable if you play a complete game. The dogs know how to beat teams from the west as Auburn will learn this weekend. C’mon dawgs, shoot the moon!
P.S. I agree with AtlantaNole that FSU is for real. Yes they have struggled with a young offensive line, just like Georgia. But when they play at their potential, they can be the FSU of old. The Noles and Dawgs will both be teams to watch in 2008.

Thanks to a UGA fan who wrote this, I found this on the net the other night. It really shows just how great of a recruiter Gailey is. Granted Suggs transfered in Gailey’s first year and Bilbo was an O’Leary recruit not Gailey’s.

“He’s tried four different starting quarterbacks in AJ Suggs, Bilbo, Reggie Ball and Taylor Bennett, and 11 total QBs (see list below) have come and gone under his watch. Again, what’s the difference in the results? You know why Tech doesn’t have solid QB play? Look at the 11 QBs that have passed through his system. It’s like he recruits on the island of lost talent: AJ Suggs: UT castoff Reggie Ball: No other Div I offers at QB Bilbo: I have no idea who wanted him at QB Kyle Manley: Handed the ball to Darius Walker every down in HS Calvin Booker: AU castoff Josh Nesbitt: Recruited by UGA as a DB/WR J. Garner: Urban Meyer pulled his offer upon arriving at UF Byron Ingram: Other offers were Duke and Tulane Steven Threet: highly recruited. Transferred to Michigan Pat Carter: highly recruited. Transferred to Louisville Al Pena: Transferred to Houston And Techies call Gailey a great recruiter? Gailey wouldn’t know a big time QB if they walked up and introduced themselves as “Troy Aikman.” Wait…that did happen, and he ran him into the ground too.”

The UGA fan failed to mention the fact that our starting QB this year was only recruited by Tech and no other D-1 school. Yeah, Gailey has a gift at finding talent. If we keep any longer it will only get worse because Gailey can’t develop QBs. He needs to go, sooner than later.

GatorBill, I have to agree with you on NASCAR, not cool to wish injury upon an opponent no matter who that might be. I see those rankings that you provided on your offense Bill, nice ratings but what does that get you this year? 3 loses? Spread may work, but the losses don’t. Get over the celebration, a lot of the country saw it as a good thing. I saw it as a “better be a one time thing”. Tebow’s good no doubt about it and what everybody thought would happen has happened. He can’t sustain that type of pounding for an entire season in the SEC. As far as the Heisman, can’t believe he is still in the running with a 3 loss team and scoring on 1 yard dives. But it is what it is. Nice pounding of Vandy there. Shows what kind of coach Meyer really is. Should have put your backups in after you got a three TD lead. Same as in the UT game. That sort of thing will come back to bite him when one of your stars gets an unneccessary injury.

Glad to have Thomas Brown back. Knowshon needs to split some totes if we are to keep him healthy.

Usually, most coaches hold that an injury does not cause a player to lose his position on the depth chart - it isn’t good for for the team. Brown may even get the start, just to prove that statement. Even if he does, Knowshon will still get the lion’s share of totes. That said, Brown will still have to knock off the rust and compete for the position in the next few games. I don’t care who starts here, the cream will rise to the top and that can only help the Dawgs.

A coaching change at Tech would certainly not be a ‘sudden’ change. Fans have been grumbling for many years about the very regular 7-5 seasons (with one exception). The fact that this year we have a couple of losses to teams we should have beaten, and looked like a middle school team against VA Tech only serves to emphasize the point.

Chan is a good college coach if a 7-5 record is acceptable. I just don’t think that GA Tech is willing to accept that.

Recruits will (and may) come and go. IMHO, most of the good talent that like Tech, like TECH with Chan as a distant second or third. I would even propose that the defensive recruits like Tenuta way before Chan ever comes to their minds.

If losing Chan means losing a few recruits this year, so be it. I want Tech to find a head coach that will build a top program - and Chan is just not that man.

I hate to compare, but….. would ugay stand for a coach that got a 7-5 record every year? I don’t think so. Would LSU stand for a coach that got a 7-5 record every year? Nope. So then, why should GA Tech?

LSU: After watching the LSU-‘Bama game (and several other LSU games), I came away with one impression. Les Miles coaches with the type of abandon usually reserved for gamblers playing with the house’s money. You know, like he has nothing to lose. It does make you wonder if the rumors of his imminent departure for Ann Arbor are true.

‘BAMA: I kept wondering how a team that was accomplishing so little against LSU was able to be leading the game. They’re excellent at capitilizing on their opponent’s mistakes and LSU made a lot of them. Look for them to get even tougher in years to come.

AU at Georgia: flip a coin. History is on Auburn’s side this year. Momentum would appear to be on Georgia’s side. Should be a great game.

Forest Gump….Please explain how Saban will not be around long enough to make Alabama competitive. Considering he lost to UGA by a TD in overtime, lost to FSU by 7(who just upset #2 BC) and then lost to the LSU (#3 in the country) by 7, we are competitive now. Saban may not be around Alabama very long but he will leave the program better than he found it. If he is around 5 years and build a program like he did LSU, I will be pretty content with that!!

You seem to suggesting that Tech would hire someone who would be even worse that what they have now. Now that would take some doing as Gailey is possibly the worst coach that I have seen at GT in my 55+ years as a fan. Now I know he has a winning record for his tenure but he inherited a pretty good team when he was hired. O’Leary had beaten Georgia 3 out of the last 4 years. No Tech coach in my memory has lost 5 straight in the series. Fire him today.

I find the comment that “Chan is the worst coach in college history” funny and shows how thorougly ignorant some comments can be. I think that Coach Gailey is certainly underacheiving and has done so for years. My bigger concern is who to get, I think Randy Edsall would be a huge mistake, but at GT we are not the prime job, and we will not get a great coach or even a great coach to be. If we fire Chan, then we deserve what we get, and maybe that will be good, but my bet is that we are in worse shape in a few years. Good luck Jackets.

Notimpressed, I agree with your post. Ohio State is not that good. Two of my buddies were arguing over who would win between UF and OSU. One said UF would not have a chance. To humour myself, I went and pulled OSU’s opponents win loss records versus UF’s opponents win loss records. OSU 47-50 / UF 50-29. OSU has only played 3 teams with a record over .500. Perdue, Penn State and Wisconsin to date. Every team UF has played has been at least 3 games over .500 with the exception of Ole Miss. People will always question OSU because of a cupcake conference. OSU would get blown out by any of the top 8 teams. It might start getting competitive when they go 9 or below. We saw it last year. Nobody gave UF a prayer against OSU but look what happened! Anyway, my DAWGS have a biggie this weekend. I hope they come out on fire. I hope Richt lets the K-Train roll. He is awesome. Go DAWGS!!!

Frankly, I think Meyer is setting both Tebow and Harvin up for serious Heisman runs next season, but he shouldn’t do it at the risk of losing the season. The Gators need a starting tailback badly.

I’m not going to kill y’all with stupid facts but I would throw this out there for your consideration. Fact Auburn held the best running back tandem in the last two decades in the SEC thats at Arkansas to 67 yards. Look it up cause its true…I’m am firmly convinced that Moreno can influence the game against Auburn but to win it has to go on the shoulders of UGA’s qb. In y’alls losses it was put on the running backs shoulders and they failed miserably, while the performance of the qb was lackluster. Auburn isn’t going to get in any shootout. They are a time consuming low scoring offense. They can run and they can pass, not big plays but steady possession ball. Georgia has to have an even game from both qb and rb, but I wouldn’t say to expect a big game from your rb cause if thats the plan its going to be a long game watching Auburn’s defensive line and linebackers teeing off on him. Auburn’s weakest area on defense is 10-15 yards on out routs…South Florida abused that. History is in favor of an Auburn win since they have only lost to Georgia once in Athens since 1990. It should be fun, but someone will lose and if games are won or lost on defense then my money is on Auburn. May the best team win.

Tony, Tony, Tony. Was it Saban’s great coaching that made officials call LSU for all those penalties? Was it Saban’s great coaching that made Matt Flynn throw three awful picks? When are you (and others) going to look at Saban’s record. He loses at least three almost every season, usually more. Season a success because they played in that game? Which win makes him a great coach? The one over Arkansas after getting outscored 28-0 or maybe the one over Tennessee and that GREAT defense. Saban is a good coach who has had one great year in his entire career. Or does the record book lie?

Tony,

Always enjoy your columns and comments. Saban is a good coach, but what is so different about this 3 loss Alabama team that is not in contention for the SEC title? It looks just like all the other 3,4, and 5 loss teams that every coach since 1992 has put on the field for the Tide.

At the beginning of the season some in the college football media were saying that it is a question of WHEN and NOT IF Saban will win a national title at Alabama.

That may indeed happen, but I’d like to see them get out of a season with less than 4 losses and maybe make an SEC title game before we start annointing Saban’s Alabama program a national title contender

Atlanta Nole:

Congrats on the win against BC, but the reason it is not mentioned is that the college football world has stopped caring about FSU this century. It is a “has been” program much like Miami, Notre Dame, and Nebraska.

Florida State is not ranked in the top 25 and while they may be at the top of the heap of the four programs mentioned above, they have a become a middle of the pack ACC team.

Gee, Mr. UGA, Mr. SEC, Mr. Football warns Georgia Tech that they’d better stick with Chan Gailey. Who’d have thought it? Thanks for the advice Tony. If the Tech fans were “throwing Gailey under the bus” for one loss, or even one crummy season, the advice might stick (even if it is from a Vince Dooley/Dawg jock-sniffer). Tony, Gailey was a loser before he got to Tech and he’s been an underachiever since he’s been there. It’s time for him to take his hefty buyout (thanks to Braine-less Dave) and retire to fishing somewhere. His list of dubious accomplishments at Tech are too lengthy to list, but here are a few….Worst loss to UGA ever, Worst loss to DUKE ever, ZERO, yes ZERO wins over in-state rival (ask past Alabama coaches how that plays in our neighboring state), etc.. I could go on for a while. Our most recent recruiting class was indeed highly rated, but before the ones before that were not. Your “warning” is noted, Mr. RED & BLACK, but save the advice for Mr. Richt. He needs to be a bit more careful about potentially inciting riots at football games.

Gaily aint changing….he’s done said so….. we can have all the talented “Kids” in the nation but that aint gonna matter when the coach wont do as he’s beiong paid to do. We need a coaching change….not a recruiting change.

More advice from a UGA fan. Gee, I think we warned you guys not to fire Donnan and Goff too.

The man for the job might just be calling plays up in Boston Mass for the Eagles. I fear to mention his name b/c of ties to one “Bill Lewis” but Steve Logan is an offensive minded coach who knows how to develop QB’s. STEVE LOGAN!! STEEEEEVO LOOOOOGAN!

If Urban Cryer continues to use his quarterback as a “Battering Ram”, Tebow will continue to be banged up. You don’t run your QB almost 30 times (Ole Miss game) and expect him to hold up. Linebackers and Headhunting D-backs are going to Tee-off on the guy. He’s not Larry Csonka or John Riggins. Get a clue Meyer this isn’t Utah. Stop complaining about Tebow being banged up. Just look how many running backs at Georgia have been hurt.

Thanks Shane, and you fired Donnan and hired Richt. I know the history. Why would a UGA fan not want Tech to get rid of Gailey?

I am as disappointed as every Tech fan.My son and I drove 450 miles from Kentucky to see the game last Thursday. My car broke down in Tenn. and I had to rent a car.I then got stopped by a cop.Got to game late and then the rest is history. All we can do is see what happens in the next three games.I do believe that if we lose to Ga. that Chan will probably be gone.

Urban Crier? You need to get a life Al, and get some new material while you’re at it…the Vandy game showed what Gatorsar doing now and will continue do with Harvin, Caldwell,James et al, as opposed to your lousy Dawgs getting lucky with a gimme fumble and a field goal against Vandy…now THAT’S something to cry about, cause you should have lost that game…and will lose your next two, as well…no more Troys on the menu…

Thanks Tony for the advice, but you’re not a Tech fan and I don’t think you know much about our football program. Tony, never seen you at a Georgia Tech football practice and I’m not sure if you even attend our games. After 6 years, it’s time for a change. Tony, Georgia Tech will be fine. Now go back to your SEC worship.

Thanks Atlanta Gator, I am glad someone else saw that as dangerous for their health also.
