Miles, LSU under more pressure
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five burning questions as we head for the weekend:
1. Who’s feeling more pressure, Les Miles or Nick Saban? That’s an easy one. LSU’s Miles is the coach of the No. 3 team in the nation. He’s supposed to win. Some fans are saying that Miles is 29-5 because 17 of his 22 starters were recruited by Saban. If LSU falls Alabama is in first place in the SEC West and LSU loses a shot at the national championship. Alabama and Saban are playing at home. And if LSU loses, Miles’ critics will be out in full force. Yeah. Not much pressure there.
2. Will Georgia’s FANS be ready for Troy? I’ve heard a number of Georgia fans wonder if the Bulldogs will be flat against Troy after the big win over Florida. I heard Ray Goff say this last Sunday and I agree with it. Georgia’s fans also need to take this game seriously. Quarterback Omar Haugabook is a big time quarterback who knows how to run the spread offense. What will be the energy level in Sanford Stadium when the game starts?
3. Will Tyrod Taylor be at full speed? The Virginia Tech quarterback is the X-factor in tonight’s game with Georgia Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium. He missed the Boston College game with a high ankle sprain but earlier this week said he would be ready by Thursday. If he is anywhere near full speed, his mobility presents a problem for the Georgia Tech defense. Sean Glennon, who stared against BC, presents fewer problems.
4. Is Florida in trouble against Vanderbilt? The Gators are really banged up after the loss to Georgia and they go to South Carolina to play Steve Spurrier next week. But Florida is still very much in the SEC East race if both Georgia and Tennessee lose once more. Vanderbilt has already beaten South Carolina on the road this season and almost beat Georgia in Nashville. Florida has to win this game.
5. What happens if Arkansas loses to South Carolina? The Razorbacks are 1-3 in the SEC. A loss to South Carolina means they will be 1-4 with Tennessee, Mississippi State and LSU left to play. Arkansas could lose all of those games. It’s hard to see Houston Nutt surviving that.

I don’t think the energy level between the hedges will be a problem. There will be a huge carry over from last Saturday.
The fans will show CMR and the team that we love them , we love what they did, and last but not least- we don’t need no stinking apology !!

Everyone who is screaming for Richt’s head over this celebration issue is just indicative of the T. Moore / feminization of our culture. Good grief - get over it already. Go live your own life instead of getting so wrapped up a team celebration that was a little over the top. They were celebrating together - not linging up in a row doing the gator chomp. What a bunch of whiners.

Hey Geoff, ask yourself if Auburn, Tennessee, or Florida State did it, would you consider is a “great celebration” or bush league? Chances are , if you take the red colored glasses off, you would (as well as the media) roast the coach and team for being thugs.

No Mike, you ignorant slut, bush league behavior was what Georgia did at Vanderbilt by jumping on their logo after the game with no threat of consequences from the referees. That was rubbing it in the face of Vanderbilt from which Coach Richt was rightly upset. This was a team celebration that was concocted knowing they would be penalized for it. Georgia weighed the risk/reward ratio of such an action and working under the rules of the game, used it to their motivational advantage. That’s why it was such a brilliant and gutsy move.

Bush league is Spurrier coming out to the press today saying if he would have known about Richt’s celebration plan, he would have purposely sent his 3rd stringers on the field to start a fight with our players to get them ejected and suspended for the next game…complete class.
I’m sure the parents of the South Carolina 3rd stringers were happy to hear that!

Steve Spurrier: all class.
* NOT IN MY END ZONE: South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier knows what he would’ve done if he had been coaching Florida and Georgia’s players got the mass celebration penalty — start a fight.
Spurrier says if Gators coach Urban Meyer had know what was going to happen after the Bulldogs’ initial touchdown last week, he should have sent “out one of his third-team guys and get in a wrestling match with the guys, get a fight started.”
Spurrier’s reasoning? With all of Georgia’s players off the bench already, it could mean that they would all get suspended as part of the Southeastern Conference’s penalties for fighting.
Six South Carolina players missed a game in 2005 for their roles in a season-ended brawl at Clemson in November 2004.
“Leave the bench in a fight and you’re out the next game,” Spurrier said. “I think that’s what we’d do if the other team ever does that.”
Georgia coach Mark Richt urged his players to celebrate excessively after their first touchdown in a 42-30 victory over Florida.
If Meyer had followed Spurrier’s tactic, the Bulldogs “would’ve been in trouble for fighting. They would have been in deep trouble for the game next week,” Spurrier said.*

it has been an entire month since the Dawgs teed it up between the hedges, The fans should be rocking! But you know how that goes, most UGA fans sit in the stands and wait for something to happen! UGA has always limited the number of student tickets and that is not fair, they should let the students buy tickets and stand around the hedges and be as loud as they can be!!!

Markie knew it was illegal yet he condoned, even encouraged it. Maybe he shouldn’t get so upset when one of his players lands in jail for breaking the law. It’s not exactly the same, but the parallel is easily drawn. The lesson he should be teaching is follow the rules. War Eagle!!!

Goeff, nice mature response…you must have confused me with an uneducated member of your family.
A brilliant move? To have some of your scrubs come off the bench and mock the FL players. What is next? Having Moreno take out a sharpie or Mickey Henderson bring out a cell phone after a touchdownb. Because like you said, those could be brilliant motivating moves.

I don’t know how Miles can coach more wide open. His players have been in this position so many times and the coach thing is not on them, it is on the coaches. I think the pressure is on Alabama who knows this LSU team will do anything, anytime. The South Carolina behind the back fake field goal, the fourth down plays with Florida and the pass with Auburn. This is a loose group that brings it every Saturday. Alabama let Georgia slip away on a call the whole stadium knew was coming, lost to FSU, on and on…

Has anyone reminded Spurrier that he got beat by Vandy this year? Where was his team’s “fight” in that game?
IMO, Miles will run the score sky high IF that opportunity presents itself. He is playing for style points to the max just in case one of the teams in front of him slips he has to make sure he is right there. I do agree he is off to UM next year as they are in desparate need of a firey coach.

Spurrier is getting downright bitter these days. He used to be funny, irreverant, and clever. Now he’s just pathetic. Mediocrity has really gotten him down. His comments about UGA this year have been unprofessional and immature. Funny how he has no problem with one of his players intentionally trying to injur Danell Elerbe (he didn’t say a word to the guy), but a little excessive celebration is out of line. Double standard ole ball coach?

Reggina Leinart, You mention your top five teams, but you forget such powerhouses as Stanford, Oregon State, Washington, Washington State, and Arizona. Now those are BCS quality teams. The SEC will have three bowl eligible teams this year who wont be able to go because there are 8 other bowl eligible teams in the conference that are better. Thanks for sharing. You should work for ESPN with that football knowledge bank.

As for the game tonight at Grunt Field at Histeric Bobby Dudd Stadium, Tech does not stand a chance.
Have you ever noticed how Chan stands on the sidelines with his hands on his knees bent over like he is waiting for the proctologist to finish the examination? It is pretty indicative of the entire Tech team, isn’t it?
I mean if it wasn’t for winless Notre Dame, Samford, and Army then Tech would have 3 wins this season. Now that is a team to beproud of.

Great comments to the PAC 1. Oh I menat 10, oh is it 12. Maybe some day they will joing the 21st century and play a championship game. Maybe someday they will have a team that can beat the best or 2nd best teams from the SEC. Scared to play Auburn a few years back. Scared to play a championship game. Looks like you are just chicken.
Ohio State, cruising along just like last year beating those national powers and getting ready for a waltz into the BCS game while others play real games, championship games. Get a life Barnhardt, Penn State is terrible. That is your measuring stick? Ohio State always loses to the SEC no matter what bowl.
Why is the Big Ten, Pac Ten down? They aren’t interested in getting a ture champion. They don’t play the championship game. It took them forever just to do it in basketball. Maybe by 2050 they will do it in football.
As long as you writers are lulled to sleep by the lack of competition in the leagues and say the deserve to be no 1 for not playing or beating anyone, then we will still end up with the Pac 10 Big 10 in the BCS, undefeated and headed for embarassment.
As far as UGA, I’ll bet that Richt didn’t plan that, and he is just taking the heat for the team.
Spurier proved he can get his team up for one game. UGA, what is different about that? He sends players out to fight, maybe he should try just to beat the other team on the field more often.
Once Saban get’s some real players I will say that UA is credible. If he stays that long. Calling in old markers with ESPN doesn’t prove a thing. Let’s see in 5 years how it looks.
Oh yeah Mike your team is the one that lost. Even with those players that can’t get into South Florida, or FSU. Let’s hear for Percy and Bubba.

Tony, do you recall a year with more ups & downs, surprises and crazy happenings than this year? It is not just the rankings, but the games have held some surprises, and it has really been an unusual season all around.
I think the Dawgs will be up for this game and the fans will still be electric from the Florida game. Think about it - a lot of these fans were not in Jax, and this is their first chance to let the team know how they feel about the Florida win. It will be loud in the first quarter!

The pressure is clearly on Saban. LSU is coming in loaded with talent and experience to the gills. Those 17 starters are thankful to Saban for nothing but getting them to Baton Rouge and the loyalty will stop there. I suspect a hammering for Bama. The LSU defense will not relent in this game and bama has no Woodson.
The Dawgs are more than ready for Troy. No flat game they’ll be fine tuning a game they suddenly found last week.

Va. Tech is going to be tough tonight. BC beating them is like feeding raw meat to a pittbull. Our boys will come out all friendly like and about the third quarter if it is not too late will realize there is a game going on. Watch how slow the come up to the offensive line. In the second half they do it because they are tired but the first half they do it because they are not ready to play.

ARDawg…you sure about that. BAMA came into the seasons pretty much with expectations of a 7-8 win season. LSU had hopes of a national title and it is still possible. A loss this weekend would end that hope for LSU and it would bring Miles under a tremendous amount of questioning. All that talent and no hardward to show for it and a loss to Saban. If that happens, LSU fans may just give him a tide to Ann Arbor! The pressure is clearly on Les Miles this week.
By Paul
November 1, 2007 2:53 PM | Link to this
The pressure is on Miles. LSU is the better team, and is in the hunt for a national title. Alabama was hopeful for 8-9 wins and they have a chance to do that. LSU’s goal is the national championship and the worst thing that could happen to Miles is to lose that chance by getting beat by Saban. Everyone realizes LSU is the better team, and even should Bama beat them, I still think LSU is the better team. It’s just nice to see the West getting back to the way things are supposed to be…with Bama in the running.

I agree pressure is on Miles. All Saban was supposed to do was come in this year, take over the program, start recruiting, and win a handful of games. As much as I don’t like his lying dishonest ways, he has gotten more done than expected so the only pressure on him is to not get blown out. Looks like JPW and Co. is very capable of keeping that from happening.

I believe LSU, GTech, Florida, S. Carolina will win close, & Georgia will win by about what they’re favored (16).
C’mon people, stop hanging on Spurrier’s every word. You should know not to take that guy seriously at times.
“R.E. Leinart,” I think anybody would realistically agree that the top 5 teams in the Pac-10 (Oregon, Az. St, Cal, USC, UCLA) could matchup w/ SEC’s top 5, but the SEC is a deeper league & 6-10 you’d have to give it the edge hands down. As matter of fact, you can’t really pick/limit a top 5 in the SEC right now.

Mark Hypo, sounds like somebody had a bowl of anger cereal today. Probably some Mark Richt box of wheaties. Get over it. It has never happened before and it won’t happen again when they put the rule in place after the season. The SEC has already sent out the warning letters. And the NCAA will probably follow suit. In hindsight it could have turned out ugly if Florida had any fight in them. They had 50+ minutes to fight back.

well Denver Dog and College Football Fan, lets not get too ahead of ourselves on GT losing tonight. I, quite naturally dont think GT will lose, i think it will be close and because we dont have our two senior running backs in the game tonight, I do expect the offense to be out of sync. But the top ten GT defense will create havoc for VT and that struggling offense all night, its going to be a game of field position. once Evans and Dwyer get the ball rolling the running game will open up things for the offense. and congrats on your win last week dawg fans, i hated to see you guys win, but i am man enough to congratulate the better man. too bad i wont be doing that in about three weeks or so. man i love college football.
