Richt adds new fuel to Georgia-Florida

Just one man’s opinion:

1. The Georgia-Florida rivalry is back: You can argue whether or not what Georgia’s Mark Richt did was right. But here’s what it did do. It threw a big old bucket of new fuel onto the Georgia-Florida rivalry. Florida is going to remember this for a whole year and when the two teams meet in Jacksonville in 2008 that is going to be one intense football game.

2. The SEC East winner will have three losses: This won’t make my Georgia friends happy, but the odds are against the Dawgs beating Auburn and Kentucky on consecutive Saturdays. The Auburn game will be very physical and Georgia can certainly win it. But those will be brutal back-to-back games. And given Tennessee’s defense-or the lack thereof-I can’t see the Vols beating a great running team (Arkansas), a great passing team (Kentucky), and an extremely well-coached team (Vanderbilt) in three consecutive weeks.

3. Florida State can beat Boston College: Yes, you read that right. The Seminoles have been a strange team this season but they have a lot of athletes on defense. They have more speed than BC has seen all season. Florida State is just due to play a complete game. Will it be Saturday in Chestnut Hill?

4. Georgia Tech needs to play its best defensive game of the season: The only way for the Yellow Jackets to win Thursday night is to play ugly and keep the score low. In other words, Georgia Tech needs to beat Virginia Tech at its own game-defense and special teams. If 22 (Tashard Choice) were healthy, Georgia Tech could be a little more aggressive on offense. Not now. It’s going to have to be a 13-10 game for the Jackets to win.

5. Nick Saban has already earned his $4 million: First and foremost, Saban was hired by Alabama to make Crimson Tide football relevant again as a national program. By Sept. 22 ESPN’s College Game Day was on campus. Saturday CBS will have a one-hour pre-game before a nationally televised 5 p.m. start. The whole country will be watching. Saban has done all that after just eight games as head coach. Given the amount of national exposure Saban has brought to the program in only 10 months, Alabama got off cheap.

My money’s on LSU throwing water on the Saban overkill. LSU nor having the obligation of playing Perriloux will cut down on their potential coaching blunders. I don’t see Bama consistently blocking the LSU defense.

Pat…while LSU has an obvious edge, I don’t beleive it will be the blowout so many are hoping for. BAMA’s O is rolling right now and we have arguably the best WR in the league. Our D is what has been hurting us this season as we just dont have the depth. As for Saban, it is clear to see that he has us going in the right direction. The team plays with more fire and plays for 60 mins. Something that was not there under Shula. Also, he is recruiting at a higher level than any coach at BAMA. It is very obvious that this is no long Mike Shula’s BAMA team!

TONY,

I think you are forgetting how “BEAT UP” Kentucky will be after consecutive games with SC, LSU, Fla, Miss St, and Vandy.

Also I think Kentucky may be fading just a little and Georgia gets them in Athens with a REVENGE FACTOR!

After that game in Jacksonville, I think Georgia has turned the corner and will RIDE THAT EMOTION to a 10-2 FINSIH

THEY ARE A DIFFERENT GEORGIA TEAM NOW

Tennessee WILL LOSE AGAIN! And Georgia will win out!!!!!!!!

You know what, the “ambush” in Jax is enough for me to be a content Dawg.

Don’t get me wrong, 10-2 would be awesome, I’m not so sure facing LSU is what anybody wants.

LSU will beat Alabama, come on Ga already proved that Sara Jessica Parker Wilson can’t get it done.

It’s humurous to hear UF already talking about the championship game, do they really want some of LSU. I know Gator Fan is going off of how they played in Baton Rouge, if they don’t watch it, Vandy will get them.

I can’t wait to see a 4 loss USC play UF 3 loss. Why didn’t anyone ask Spurrier what he thought of Richt’s end zone celebration move.

No matter how it plays out, even if UF gets to Atlanta, I may show up and count the # of Jorts entering the Ga Dome.

Peace, out

Why does UF need a whole year to remember the celebration? They had 3+ quarters to do something about it but COULD NOT. The media fails to recoginze what really happended. UF got punched in the face. We stepped on their face with the OTHER hob nail boot.

Toddy It’s funny how all the Dawgs fan wants to praise ‘Dudley Do Richt’ for the intentional unsportsman like conduct. Also it’s funny how he says he had no idea the whole team was going to go out there but none of the coaching staff lifted one finger to do anything about it. Go ahead a dream you still barely beat some average teams and you’ve been beaten by some average teams (actually killed by UT). You better pray you lose one more and don’t have to play LSU in the championship game. Maybe Dudley can fake a heart attack to get his players fired up.LOL.

Watch the teams that Auburn plays and their results after they have played Auburn. This team will wear you down. If you play a pancake schedule like the Big 10, you look good every week because football is a part time sport up there. All the national pros are trying the same tricks they tried last year. They are even saying the SEC especially Georgia is soft. I have said a lot of bad things about Georgia being a Tech man but even I would never say they are soft, just can’t lie like that. I have never seen football played anywhere like the last two Georgia/Auburn games except when Auburn played LSU last year and this. Any team that recruits Georgia high school football players will tell you they are hardnosed. How many go to the Big Ten?

By DawgPile

A 3-16 record does not a rivalry make. Florida still owns ugay.

Yes, Florida will remember this year - especially the ridiculous celebration after the first touchdown. That alone will come back to bite ugay in the a$$ next year. Who knows what Florida will come up with after their first touchdown next year.

Would ugay fans that the GA Tech rivalry is ‘renewed’ if Tech wins this year? Don’t be silly.

GT,

Well, if the Big Ten is bad, then the ACC (Always Crappy Conference) is just plain brutal! Here’s the thing…the Big Ten is down right now but they will be back (it goes in cycles, even the SEC was down in ‘05), whereas the ACC has been and will continue to be bad!

Also, if you care to check the SEC website and look at stats, JPW is ahead of Matt “The Chosen One” Stafford in most every category. And aslo, BAMA and UGA had the SAME RECORD!!! BAMA will likely lose again but so will UGA! I swear, UGA fans are the only team in the world that can make me root for AU when they play you guys!

Tony, I hope you are right about FSU. I seriously have a good feeling about Sat night’s game….FSU is so up and down anything can happen. Hopefully with the three losses (as pathetic as they were) FSU is playing loose and has something to prove (like they did with Alabama) and can pull this one out.

Hopefully they remember the heartbreaker against BC last year and goes to Chestnut Hill to pay them back. GO NOLES!

“3. Florida State can beat Boston College” Well, duh! Schools like Boston College do not produce undefeated teams. You have to consider last week a loss, since they were the inferior team for 59 minutes and 49 seconds.

Look, Florida State lives for moments like these. They hammered Alabama and Colorado, teams who have actually done something on the field. The Noles are going to hand BC their heads this week, 52-3. Oh, and as for Matt Ryan, it’s hard to win the Heisman when you suffer 9-54, 47 yards, 7 INTs, 2 lost fumbles wipeout. FSU 52-3.

Way to go KingGator - what does that make you, the head-lizard? - you really got us with that one, ‘Until your coach wins a National Championship he ‘ain’t s**t’ argument - means about as much as our saying ‘we’ve still won more games in the overall rivalry than you have’ means to you. So, I suppose, until that day we’ll have to settle for CMR’s having beaten all those coaches you mentioned - and will again and again in the years to come. Fact is, a team from the SEC East isn’t likely to win a National Championship again anytime soon, and maybe ever. So in the meantime we’ll just have to be happy winning here - first. Given the way this season has gone who knows how even this one will turn out - we could lose to Auburn or even KY…Tenn could easily lose to Ark, KY or Vandy, so nobody knows for sure.

As for our being afraid of playing in the SEC Championship against LSU, somebody’s got a short memory. Again, looking at this season, anybody seems to be able to beat anybody else. And I seem to recall a prohibitive underdog UGA team beating the ever-luvin’-st out of the (We Blew) By-You Bengals a few years back and my Coon* relatives and friends (for those of us that know, that’s not a negative term, by the way) were out in the streets looking for some good boudin by the end of the game. I’ll give even money we could do it again. By the way, there ain’t no good boudin in Atlanta.

It didn’t take 8 games for Saban to make Alabama football relevant again. It only took the announcement of his salary.

LSU has not proven themselves to be the dominating force that the media has hyped them to be. KY beat them; FL and AU were just a different bounce of the ball away from beating them.

If things go right for them, ‘BAMA could come out victorious.

I’ll just be happy if my Auburn Tigers dominate Tennessee Tech this week. (No looking ahead…)

That was a tough stretch of games to play. Miles is ticked off and wants to make sure they make a statement to stay in that #3 spot and move up if either or both in front falter.

Hey, as a Gator fan I don’t think the Dawgs celebration was a big deal. If we didn’t want them dancing in the endzone, we should have kept them out of there. Tony - the celebration was great. No matter how the lizards want to play the lockroom material to thier advantage, you still have to line up and execute. We will be a better team next year also, so bring it on.

Your team jumping on their logo and tebow playing like he dailing a cell phone. Take a good look at your team and their acts, before you run your mouth about UGA or any other team in the SEC. Fla is not the only team in the nation, come down off your high horse. What do you all think about Stafford’s weight? As of now, he is 6’3, 237. I wish he could get down to around 220, so that he could be more efficient and agile when running draws or just scrambling in general. His current weight of 237 seems to slow him down a bit. He could be very effective in the shotgun with Moreno back there running misdirection leads.

By George

It is just going to be freaking HILARIOUS yet EXTREMALY embarrasing to see a 3 loss SEC team make it to the SEC championship especially considering just 3 years ago a SEC went 13-0 and did not even get a shot to play for the national championship. I just hope and pray to god the pups do not win the coin flip tie braker and make it to Atlana so we dont have to listen to how amazing this team was. Truth is AU will make it 13 out of the last 16 in Sanford stadium with ease. Georgia is too one dimensional and Auburn’s run defense is just superb. Just ask Mcfadden, Felix Jones, Ben Jarvis Green Ellis, Jacob Hester etc. Moreno will go for 75 yards MAX. The Swing game will DEF be kentucky. My prediction: the pups will indeed end up in Atlanta but during the last week of December not the first for the Peach Bowl.

I like your comments…usually. But, I’m sick and tired, like the rest of the Dawgnation, of hearing what UF will or will not do next year because of Saturday. Did you or anyone else ever think we may have something for them next year too?? No one seems to be taking into account how young we are and the players we have and the ones we’re getting in this class.

Tell Terrence, Mark and some of the rest of the mindless hacks around there that UGA will be ready for UF next year.

One other comment, where were you when UF hung 51 on us in Sanford? Where were all you media guys the last 18 years? UF has tried, in every way, to beat the crap out of us everytime. What changes now? That we made the mad?

Where did you get Staffords weight from?……Matthew/SLC, you nailed it. The turn a round has begun and will continue. If CMR will continue to lets his player play loose because he will stop being so uptight himself, then the Dawgs are on their way to that magical season. Long, LOOOOOOG way to go but it’s there. I just hope Moreno doesn’t go down since they aren’t going to play King.

Sorry, long day at the factory…I guess the question just caught me off guard.

Truthfully though, I don’t think you want the weight off of him. Even if he did shed 10 to 15, he’ll never be an option-type QB, and even if he was, I don’t think Richt and Bobo would run that type of offense…look at the wear and tear Tebow is already experiencing in just his first year starting. Besides, I’d be worried that if you start messing w/ his weight/body-type it might throw off his mechanics.

I would be very content to win the SEC East. The prospect of playing LSU doesn’t bother me. I had just as soon play the best, if we can get there. We lost to LSU twice in one year and lived through it. If we get that far & get beat by LSU, so what. No BCS, no matter. We will play where we can. I’d still like to play the game before conceding defeat. No one really knows what will happen until it is played. Win the East 1st & then see what happens. That, in it’s self will be a pretty good challenge.

Exley Dawg, Dude, most of the peeps blogging here have not been around that long so cut them some slack. When folks say this hasn’t been a rivarly, they are saying it hasn’t BEEN MUCH OF ONE RECENTLY. Everyone can’t know all of the GA/FL history, especially not in today’s fast food world. You think a freshman at UGA actually knows all the history there between these two schools? C’mon, we’d be lucky if that kid can remember the last five years of it so that’s where that’s coming from. That’s no different than people saying the Gators have dominated this rivarly when in truth GA leads the overall series. I wouldn’t look at any of that as disrespect, because now I actually have some for you Dawgs. That was a gutsy azz move by Richt sending the team out there like that after that 1st TD. If ANYTHING had of jumped off as far as a fight and God forbid someone had of gotten hurt, it would have been his head. But, that didn’t happened, it was a good game, and you all won fair and square. Be happy, ‘cause the truth is- THIS HASN’T BEEN MUCH OF A RIVARLY lately, but thankfully it is one NOW and unlike the last 15 or so years, I can’t wait ‘til next year!

This story has legs and I’m very happy about that. I doubt that CMR is at all upset at what these whiners think. I like that not asking permission just doing it. Who cares if the Reptiles and Meyer are mad. They’ll put 11 players on the field and so will the Dawgs plus the Dawgs now know for sure that they can run the ball right down the Reptiles throat. Both teams will have almost everybody back so bring it on! The national media thinks it was a brilliant move and this gave the Dawgs some very positive exposure because they back it up with some slobberknocking foot ball. As someone pointed out, we’ve now won 2 of the last 4. If CMR continues to grow like this we’ll get that NC. sooner rather than later.

kentucky is not done if we can beat Miss. St. then we can beat anybody. Oh wait nevermind we actually got killed by Miss. St. who happens to be one of the worst team in the SEC! Your right UGA will win!

Who cares if Richt’s ploy fires up the Gators? Do you think they were going to come in to the game thinking, “Oh well, it’s just GA”? This instead is going to put that monkey on their back, while the Dawgs can just play to win. I applaud it, as most true Dawg fans do. It says to the Gators that we are back and they better bring their “A” game and cinch up their chin straps. GO DAWGS!!!

It was great to see Florida get smacked down on national TV, so a big congrats to the DAWGS. The Gaytor swagger, and their fans big mouths, is gone after the beat down LSU, Auburn and UGA have laid on them. Seeing Tebow cry like a little girly man after the games he loeses is priceless.

First…Congratulations to CMR and the Bulldogs; what an awesome way to get the team fired up!! I was a DAWG fan Saturday. The look of disbelief on the gaytors faces was nothing short of priceless.

Second…to Todd & George P Burdell, If I remember correctly Erik Ainge wiped his a* with the Dawgs but a couple weeks later “Sara John Parker Wilson” (Todds’ words) wiped HIS a* with PHAT PHIL PHULMER AND TENNESSEE. For those knocking Mike Shula…if I’m not mistakened, Nick Saban is able to offer scholarships now that Shula didn’t have available. The way I see it, Shula was pretty much hired with both hands and one leg tied behind his back. Had he been given a couple more years no telling what he could have accomplished. DAWGS….burn down the barners next week!

DecaturTechFan,

Please don’t make me laugh! I do believe Ohio State beat Miami (and their fast black boyz) for the championship in ‘02. Penn State beat Florida State (and their fast black boyz) in ‘05. Wisconsin has completely OWNED the ACC in regular season play (twice over UNC, twice over Virginia). The reason I didn’t mention bowl games is because we have never faced you in bowl games (oops, I forgot the thrashing over perennial loser Duke in ‘94) because we’re too busy playing better bowl games against REAL COMPETITION(3 Rose Bowls, 2 Cap. One Bowls, 2 Outback Bowls) then Tech will ever dream of (Emerald Nuts Bowl? Seattle Bowl? Silicon Valley Bowl? Humanitarian Bowl? Please wake me when you actually play a meaningful game, okay idiot?!) Oh, but I guess you can hang your hat on Virginia beating, gulp…Minnesota or last year the Turtles beating a bad Purdue team…I believe that’s all you can brag about…hahahaha! Oh, by the way, have fun getting pasted by UGA for what, the 100th time in a row?!

P.S.-please remember that this is a FOOTBALL blog, not basketball. I know you’re only bragging rights in Big Ten/ACC competition is basketball, but it’s pretty pathetic that you tie that into a FOOTBALL blog! Get a life, loser…leave the FOOTBALL discussions for the grown ups…time for you to go to bed, little boy!

Zoo,the Iron Bowl will be like the UGA-Auburn game, TOUGH. Auburn`s defense and home field will give AU edge.. Auburn is very young with 88 players on roster, FOUR deep Depth chart,75 return next year. CTT has done a remarkable job recruiting unknowns and coaching to this level. Auburn-UGA game will be a Classic for a national TV audience and fans.Moreno will be a great one, CMR gives him the ball 25-30 times a game Good luck against KY and Tech.

As a reminder, UT leads the East and holds a two-way tiebreaker over UGA. (Dawgs are apparently gloating about being merely mediocre, which is their lot in life.) And, a three-way tie would send UF to ATL, due to fewer East losses. Sorry for this inconvenient truth.

Nonetheless, best of luck to the Dawgs and Mark “Evil Angel” Richt in their quest to dig out of a 3-18 hole against UF….

Sure, it’s from the G’ville Sun sports: http://www.gatorsports.com

From the article: “…there’s no complicated formula to decipher. It’s simple: if the Gators win their two remaining SEC games (Vanderbilt and South Carolina) and Tennessee and Georgia lose a league game and the three teams finish in a three-way tie with three SEC losses, Florida wins the division.

If that scenario somehow plays out, Florida would win the tie-breaker by virtue of a better record within the division. UF would have only one loss in the division (4-1), while UT and UGA would have at least two (in fact, the ‘Dogs already have two). It would come down to divisional record because there is no winner in head-to-head competition. UF has beaten UT and lost to Georgia. Georgia has lost to UT and beaten Florida.”

3-16 record does not a rivalry make. Florida still owns ugay.

47-37-2 Georgia, Florida doesn’t own Georgia.

I mean Florida won all those years and they still trail in the overall series by 10 games. Really, who owns who? You Know.

Here is your typical Ga buldog….

A newspaper and a radio station reported that Stroud, a first-round draft choice from Georgia in 2001, is facing a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s steroids and related substances policy. The Florida Times-Union and WJXL-AM in Jacksonville, citing anonymous sources, said Stroud tested positive for banned supplements.

According to the Times-Union, Stroud’s ‘A’ sample came back positive last week. The paper said he exercised his right to have his ‘B’ sample tested Monday.

Thanks G8TR

I didn’t realize that. Good to know. However, as crazy as this year has been I wouldn’t be surprised if the Dawgs won out. After the TN loss I thought we were out of the race and all of the sudden we’re pretty close to controling our own destiny. I’m relatively sure TN will get beat. We could lose but this is the point in the year we get stronger. Your Gators are definitely in the race. With a lot of help. Kentucky is not out of it either

And, on measuring by millenium, while history prior to the age of the current crop of 18- to 22-year-old players is all very interesting, it has nothing to do w/ the 21st Century reality of which program has overachieved and which has underachieved in the “modern age.” It’s only taken Spurrier-Zook-Meyer less than two decades to bring the series history lightyears closer to even against the vaunted, legendary coaching trio of Goff-Donnan-Richt. (Even Zook, the worst of our three, went out a winner against UGA.) It’s painful, I know, but the trend is undeniable. Check back in 15 years or so with your rebuttal.

ARdawg: On the three-way tie scenario, what’s even more odd is that UF has to hope that UT loses ONE but not TWO games — which would send the Dawgs to ATL because of your tie-break hold over UF. It’s hard rooting for another team to kinda win and kinda lose.

Makes you wish we could get an East champ to cruise to ATL w/o all of this acrimony. Trust me. I have a lot of respect for UGA. You all made my life miserable for an entire decade in the ’80s.

I know what you mean. Add to that each week and each SEC east game changes the entire scenerio and fuels what may or may not happen next week. It’s entirely possible the east champ could have 4 losses. But thats why we love college football

I was around to enjoy the 70’s, 80’s and the subsequent 90’s and 2000’s. I’ve seen the domination from both sides and trust me. The good lord can giveth and taketh away.

With all the losses on our side of the conference I’m still of the belief that whomever is eventually the champ could still win the conference. But of course that will diminish an SEC NC. The price we pay I guess

You UGA fans and all the media around the country are a bunch of hypocrites!!! I mean that incident could have caused all those redneck fans in the stands to cause an all out brawl! And lets just say that Miami had been the one to pull that stunt, you think you people would be sitting here, especially you Barnhardt, saying that the Hurricanes did it to pump things up and you applaud it? Give me a break! Barnhardt and all you fans on here are a bunch of hypocrites and have a double standard. If its Miami its thug ball, but if its Georgia than I guess its ok and we will look the other way. In case you southern folk don’t know what that is, we outside the redneck south call it a DOUBLE STANDARD!!

Barnhart, you are a freaking clown. Check Shula’s close games record at Bama before you start pumping up Saban. Beat Houston by 6, barely beat a bad Ole Miss team by 3, barely beat a bad Arkansas team by 3, beat a poor Tenn team, lost to a bad FSU team. This team could be 3-5 so easily.

You writers really suck and I tired of being baited by you. You should write something about parity killing the game. Now that topic has merit.

James,

We’ll see. Go back and look at how close Shula’s games were. Again, Saban could so easily be 3-5 right now. But these are Shula’s players. I think Saban is way over rated. What in the hell has he done. LSU was the only crowning achievement and will see if that was a fluke. Saban has the same aurora as Vick and we see what a joke that was.

By Bulldog

November 1, 2007 6:29 PM | Link to this

I am getting a real kick from reading all the comments from the Gator fans saying — “wait till next year” and “we’ll remember that celebration”. Yes, the Gator fans might think they are ready for next year, but there is one group that isn’t — the Gator football team. Because of Coach Richt’s legendary “excessive celebration” call, a lot of Gator fans lost sight of what really happened during the game. Georgia physically beat down the Gators on the line of scrimmage — on both sides of the ball. Florida could not stop the run, and they couldn’t stop the sacks. I forget which TV announcer said it during the game, but he said there were four defensive starters standing on the side line “beat up” and out of the game by game’s end. The Florida players have got to be thinking in the back of their minds — Georgia is a very very young team, just about every one of those guys will be back next year. Caleb King takes off his red shirt next year. Georgia has the number two recruiting class in the nation right now for 2008. If you know anything about the Florida - Georgia series, it has always been one of long streaks. Yes, Georgia has had a bad run following the Jan Kemp scandal (and ensuing penalties) and Ray Goof years, but that all changed this year — now Georgia’s new streak has started. Florida had a tough time recruiting in the state of Florida when it was just them, FSU and Miami. Now they have to deal with the addition of UCF, Fl Atlantic, Fl International and South Florida. I’m probably forgetting a couple of schools too. To make matters worse, these newer 1A programs are on the rise — players from Florida want to play for these schools. Florida’s three loss season will also hurt their national recruiting. Georgia is a state rich in outstanding football talent. If they can keep winning the recruiting war with Ga Tech (which doesn’t seem to be a problem at the moment), they are going to be powerful. Additionally, Coach Richt does very well on the national recuiting front because young players like his style (Moreno and Stafford coming to Georgia for instance). I know you Gator fans don’t want to hear this — but the pendulum has finally swung back to the mighty dogs.

By Oh Really

November 5, 2007 12:44 AM | Link to this

Regarding the last idiots post about the pendulum having swung back the other way. Really! You can make that kind of prediction based on one game with GA leading by 5 with just 4 minutes left to play. This game could have gone the other way in one play.
