Georgia’s defense must rise to the occasion
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
We dropped to 6-4 last week because Alabama destroyed Tennessee, Vanderbilt upset South Carolina, Michigan got better and beat Illinois and Florida State-well, I don’t know what Florida State was doing in a loss to Miami.
That puts us at 55-25 as we get ready to close out October with another version of the Fearless Friday Forecast.
1. Georgia vs. Florida: In the past Georgia has won this game as a more-than-a-touchdown underdog. But in those games it was because the defense rose to the occasion and decided that the game was not going to turn into a track meet. In short, Georgia is not going to out finesse or out score the Gators. Look at Auburn’s game plan when it won at Florida on Sept. 29: Run the ball, play great defense, steal the game at the end with a field goal or a long drive against a tired defense. That’s the plan. The problem is that Georgia can’t play great defense. Florida 31, Georgia 20.
2. South Carolina at Tennessee: For the second time this month, Phillip Fulmer and the Volunteers have their backs to the wall after an embarrassing loss. You should be able to rally the troops any time the Old Ball Coach comes to town. Both teams are still in the SEC East race. The loser is virtually eliminated. If South Carolina’s quarterbacks were playing a little better, it would be tempting to go with the Gamecocks. But it’s hard to see the Vols losing a game like this at home on a Saturday night. Tennessee 24, South Carolina 21.
3. Mississippi State at Kentucky: The Wildcats have had a remarkable two weeks, first beating LSU and then losing a shootout to Florida. Now that the national TV cameras are gone, how will Kentucky play against a solid team from Mississippi State? As long as the Wildcats have quarterback Andre Woodson, they will be just fine. Kentucky 35, Mississippi State 17.
4. Ole Miss at Auburn: Auburn has to recover from a heartbreaking loss at LSU last Saturday. The Tigers may be 5-3 but no team in the SEC has improved more since the beginning of the season. Ole Miss plays folks tough at home but the Rebels don’t have the same kind of zip on the road. Auburn 28, Ole Miss 10.
5. Clemson at Maryland: This is a huge game in the ACC Atlantic Standings. Both have two losses in the conference so the loser is virtually eliminated in the race. Both still have to play Boston College, the leader in the division. Both are capable of putting up a lot of points. This is a field goal game if ever I’ve seen one. Clemson 24, Maryland 21.
6. North Carolina at Wake Forest: Since starting the season with losses to Boston College and Nebraska, Wake Forest has won five straight and is starting to look like the team that won the ACC championship last season. North Carolina (2-5) has won two straight and is gaining a little confidence. I like the Deacons to become bowl eligible for the second straight season. Wake Forest 17, North Carolina 13.
7. Ohio State at Penn State: No. 2 Boston College had to perform a great escape to get out of Blacksburg with a (14-10) win Thursday night. What fate awaits the No. 1 Buckeyes at Happy Valley? The Buckeyes have rolled to 8-0 against an easy schedule but I hear the defense is very, very good. Part of me really wants to pick Penn State, which will lead most of the game before losing Ohio State 17, Penn State 14.
8. Kansas at Texas A&M: The Jayhawks, one of only five undefeated teams left, are a slight favorite as they go to College Station. But I think the Aggies (6-2) know how big a game this is. Texas A&M finishes with Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas. If the Aggies don’t win Saturday, they might not win again. Texas A&M 24, Kansas 21.
9. California at Arizona State: This is what kind of year it has been. Two weeks ago California was ranked No. 2 and just needed a field goal against Oregon State to move to No. 1. But the Bears lost that game and then fell again last week to UCLA. Now they are No. 21. Arizona State (7-0) is ranked No. 4 in the BCS but has not been tested. That test comes Saturday and the Sun Devils will fail. California 31, Arizona State 27.
10. Southern Cal at Oregon: Oregon has scored 48 or more points in five of its seven games. Quarterback Dennis Dixon should be getting more love for the Heisman Trophy. Oregon has the best offense (550.86 ypg) in the Pac-10. Southern Cal has the best defense (252.14 ypg). I like the Ducks at home. Oregon 31, Southern Cal 17.

As for Georgia, let me put it this way. Florida is not as good as they were last year. Georgia is playing better than it was this time last year (not saying much I know). Last year, Florida beat us by running a fumble back for a touchdown. Yet somehow I’m supposed to believe they are going to steamroll us this year? Not buying it. Georgia may have a problem with execution against Florida, but its not for a lack of effort. They played hard last year and will play hard this year. This is a much closer matchup than its getting credit for. Georgia has a chance.
I don’t think Tennessee has the cajones to bounce back from last week’s beatdown. Look for another big orange meltdown in ‘07.
Woodson is the best player in the country. In other words, he’ll be watching someone else accept the Heisman in December. Nevertheless, Kentucky wins 10 games this year and has a season to remember.
Ole Miss is the worst team in the league (except when playing Florida apparently). Auburn rolls.
Zzzzzzzz…Another ACC slopfest. I’ll be sure to tune in if I’m having trouble sleeping.
Why are they even playing this game?
I can count on two hands the number of teams that would absolutely roll Ohio State. Purdue isn’t one of them, nor is the rest of the Little 10.
Kansas wins.
Cal is an overrated pretender each and every year. Have these clowns ever even played in a BCS bowl EVER?
Yet another great game we won’t be able to watch because ABC assumes anyone gives a rat’s a** about ACC football.

Two things worry me about the GA/FL game - besides the obvious. The Atlanta press keeps talking about the weak gator secondary and the fact that UGA has only 5 turnovers. Gut feeling tells me UF defense steps up and we turn the ball over a few times. Hopefully we can get some breaks and get a W. Go Dawgs!
Lock of the year: OSU beats Purdue 23-7. Not sure how they’ll fare against PSU however.

To compare the florida and georgia teams from a year ago to this years teams is an inaccurate comparison. Last year the gators had a great defense and anemic offense (until the final two games of the season). This year is the exact opposite. Solid offense, weak defense (mostly against the pass). Georgia will have success on offense. The game will be close and I think the gators will pull it out in the end. But if I was betting, I would feel really good about taking georgia and the nine points. This game in recent years has been very close.
Go Gators!

Hello, Hello. Did any of you see Georgia play its last two games. TENNESSEE, VANDY? Clearly VANDY is better than Georgia and should have won the game. Vandy fumbles and Ga gets the ball. Georgia fumbles and its kicked into Ga. hands. Better team got beat on scoreboard. What did Ga display in last two games that would suggest to anyone that they can beat Fla, although it will be close- within 10 pts. Go GATORS.

saddlecreek, yeah the better team LOST. Like UT and Bama (which we beat), and SC and Vandy (which we beat). Points on the board is what counts not how you play the game. Ask VT from last night. Played 58 minutes of solid football against the #2 team in the country. Forgot to play the last 2 though, DOH! Ryan lost the Heisman those first 58 minutes but probably won it in the last two.

dawgs get completely embarrassed and undressed on national tv. tebow makes the whole comparison about him vs stafford look just stupid. our dogs come home with tails between legs AGAIN and MR AGAIN offers up his excuse that we’re a young team. but we should rebound against troy and likely win that one…with a field goal at the end of the game.

Too bad UGA fans don’t practice what they preach. If you go back to the blogs after the SC loss you’d see a ton of “UGA would’ve won if it wasn’t for (dropped passes/stupid playcalling/”
If you replaced Vandy with UGA and UGA with South Carolina, you’d see the typical UGA fan post after the SC game.

UGA will win only 1 more game this season— Troy. Based on the way the Dawgs played against UT and Vandy, to draw any other conclusion is being completely unrealistic. The people with the negativity against CMR are boggling my mind. He has brought this program back to national prominence. 2 SEC titles in the last 4 years just doesn’t do it for you? Are you so short-sighted that you forget where we were before he came on the scene? I went to school there but wasn’t a fan before that. I graduated this year and I know more about UGA football history than I do about my own family history. I have enough sense to not speak so ignorantly. You can’t have a national championship just because you think we’re due. Coach Richt is the perfect guy to have in place. He garners respect from every level at the University and in the community. He is bringing in top recruitment classes and with some breaks here and there we can make it happen. Be patient, support the team, cheer for ‘em in wins and losses and get on with your life.

UGA has a chance this year. Yes, many of you will say “that’s what you fans say every year”. Note the odds in our favor:
Tebow is hurting We had a bye week Moreno (enough said)
I wouldn’t count out the Dawgs just yet, regardless of what some may think, we are talented. We just have to utilize that talent & exploit FL’s weaknesses. Richt is a great coach & has accomplished more than most coaches have since he’s been at UGA & actually more than “Darth Visor” has since his tenure at SC. And he will continue to get top notch recruits at UGA based on his coaching skills & respect that he shows towards his players (unlike SOS). GO DAWGS!

Now I would call 34-17, 51-7, and 31-17 a slaughter. In case you can’t remember those were the scores of the UGA and GT scores from 2001, 2002, and 2003. You don’t take into account the off week or the fact UGA could get defensive players it missed in the Vanderbilt game. Anybody who watches a UGA game can plainly see they haven’t played good defense. But look to the ‘97 win UGA had over Fla. and remember Robert Edwards RAN the ball down the Gators throat. UGA won because it made great PLAYS on defense, not an entire game of great defense.
Bottom line: UGA comes out rested, fired up and wins. That’s something anybody who’s “fearless” should be able to see.

Here we go again. The day before a game, the real IDIOTS think Georgia has morphed into a great and Richt into a great coach, despite the whole season. We will win tomorrow, etc. Anyone fan who speaks dissent is not a “real fan.” So, real fans passively accept losses and wil only complain when Georgia hits rock bottom, not on the way down. Nice.
I agree with ChampDawg. When the Dawgs gifht hard and lose a good game, nop problem. When they come out uninspired and get the everloving sh1t beat out them, that is highly blameworthy, and not on the players, on the coaches. If Florida wins a good game, I’ll hate it, but at least I’ll feel good about a well-coached, hard fight. IF the Dawgs get the sh1t beat out of them, absolutely embarrassed on Natianal TV again, then someone’s head needs to be chopped, probably Willies, but I would love to see Richt go to FSU and helped them get beat by Miami for the next few years until they can’t stand it.

Maybe Pat Dye should have said GA was not man enough to beat FLA and it would change this entire rivalry. Or maybe Richt should have closed practices all week.
GA seems to be a mystery team this season, just like MOST college teams this year. This young team has no consistency. Play the way they did against Tennessee and FLA crushes the DAWGS. Play the way they did against ‘Bama and the DAWGS pull it out late. This is why college football rules.

Many of us predicted Tebow would suffer injury if he continued running the ball. It’s not exactly rocket science, with the severity of taking a hit from any SEC defensive unit.
I’m hoping that by being dinged up a little bit, Tebow might be a half a step slower. Hope we have a good clean game and any injuries are avoided. No need for the DAWGS to avoid being physical however. You choose to run down the middle, you pay the price.
Kudos to Tebow-he is one tough athlete.

Hitman, what delusional rant, only based upon facts my friend. And yes Tech grads can keep the internet going and we will gladly keep hiring you to do so. But just in case you guys go missing I think there are fully capable people from the West coast that know a thing or two about the internet.

Every week get harder but we started it off well by predicting BC last night. It is just me or were the announcers watching another game. If you listen to the announcers you would have thought BC was behind three touchdowns. At the end of the game they were trying to take back all comments and act like they thought BC was a good team after spending three quarters praising anything Tech did and reranking the top 10 with BC dropping out of everything. Wishful thinking by the Ohio State homer that is the Big Ten’s biggest spin mister. What actually happen was it stopped raining the last quarter which was barely mentioned as a negative for a pass happy BC offense. It was all Tech defense, despite balls being dropped and fumbled by BC because of the conditions. South Carolina will beat Tennessee. SOS lives for this kind of drama and the last time Tennessee’s back was against the wall they were not playing LSU, Florida, Auburn, Kentucky or South Carolina, they were playing Georgia so get over this heroic moment. Fulmer is gone; SOS is the contender he said he was and Richt will be the next fish on the fryer. Southern Cal wins too.

Kalamazoo-you may be right. Read some of the tripe on the Gainesville Sun posts. Lots of discussion that he may be faking it.
DAWG preparations should have been conducted as if he’s 100%

I really think the Gators and the Dawgs are more evenly matched then some would like to think. The question is will Urban’s staff outcoach Richt’s staff? I am a dawg fan, but if this season is any indication, our boys are going to have a rough day.Our offense needs to drive and keep them off the field. But the playcalling by Bobo has been a C+ at best.
On the other side of the ball, Martinez bend and down break defense has been stinkin up the gym.Ainge picked them apart.Tebow adds the ability to pull it down and run.
We need to take a lesson from Rutgers…blitzes coming from all directions. If they beat the pressure…finally. But at least make them work for it.
If I see another Tennessee type drill, I probably throw up my BBQ all over the 50” plasma. My stomach is not weak, but I am not sure I can can take another “dont show up” type of game.
Here’s hoping the defense and offense find a way to show up and beat the Gators.
Go Dawgs! And to hell with Ga Tech.

BjohnDawg,
I’m not saying for a second that the coaching has been incredible this year, but you have to keep in mind that a lot of it is based on what you have to work with. We don’t have the emotional leader we normally do on either side of the ball. Not to mention the majority of the team, offense and defense, is either a first-time starter, or playing in a new role. Any staff would have a tough time w/ that.

I’ll save everyone the trouble of reading Tony’s predictions. Just take whatever the pointspread is and that’s how Tony believes the game will end up. If you want some real analysis check out my site.

UGA will NEVER will this series w/FL on a consistent basis until the game is moved out of JVille. What’s happened in the past 17 years is a monstrosity and the SEC should be ashamed for letting it happen. There are actually two reasons Fl will continue to win this game if something isn’t done about it and I mean like NEXT YEAR. #1: The game must be taken out of Jville immediately. 15 losses in 17 games in Fl’s backyard. They have only 70 miles to travel to get to the game which makes them the home town favorite every year. #2: Only onetime since 1993 has GA had a bye before this game and that was in 2004. That means in the last 15 years GA has had only had 1 bye compared to FL’s 14..And there is GA’s 15 losses in the past 17 years. How can UGA allow this to happen? Right away these changes MUST take place because it is totally unjustified and unfair to GA. No wonder FL beats GA every year. Home team advantage and 2 weeks to prepare for GA every year. Come on UGA officials. Get with it and get this injustice corrected. Don’t stand by with your hands between your legs and let this continue to happen. Shame on you for putting GA players through this pressure and expectation every year to beat FL when they have all the advantages. Let’s get this series balanced out for a change. When that happens, you’ll start to see GA win most of the games or at least GA will be on a level playing field. At least it will give UGA an equal and balanced chance to win. Now they don’t have that. GO DAWGS*

Get with the program Dawgs fans. The Dawgs need a coach who can motivate the players and have them believe in the system. I dont buy into the fact that Stafford is the qb for the Dawgs. If he struggles, give someone else a try. I know they are young, but there are other players on the team who deserve a chance. He needs to step up, be an in the face type of coach. Like he was when them stomped on the “V”, show that kind of attitude and get them fired up. They definately have playmakers on the field but just dont show it. We really dont have a STAR athlete on the field like we are used to seeing. Is coaching really a factor ?

As my bookie used to comment “What did the bulbs say”? The scoreboard tells all and I don’t see my Vols winning another game save La-lafayette (if their school bus makes it to Knoxberg). Philapotamus has to go. Time has passed him by. And yes Dawgs will hang for about a quarter, then Gators roll. Fla 43 Dawgs 17.

The Gators should win this game. They have a better offense, and their defense can certainly stop Georgia’s, and their gameday coaching is probably better, too.
But they won’t.
This is the crux of the season for the Dawgs. Lose, and they’re probably looking at a 6-6 or 7-5 year. Win, and the sky’s the limit. Don’t think they don’t know that. Just like the Vols were hungrier in Knoxville, the Dawgs will be hungrier in J’ville. They’re due. And there’s not a lot the Gators can do to stop it. It’s just time.
Dawgs, 31-24.

Dawgs will lose,
How’s that humble pie tasting?
Georgia Fans,
Don’t get too cocky — Florida’s just not that good this year. They graduated too much talent last year. Everyone got excited about them smashing creampuffs early in the season.
I just hope that Bama plays a good game next Saturday and that the Dawgs win out. I want a do-over in Atlanta. That would be a helluva matchup.
