We’re not done with the “upsets”

If this college football season has taught us anything, it is that preseason rankings mean absolutely nothing. Here is what has happened to the rankings in the past four weeks:

Four weeks ago: Seven of the top 13 in the AP poll lose so the rankings are reshuffled and we get a new Top 10.

Three weeks ago: Four of the Top 10 lose. Another shuffling. Surely this time we got it right.

Two weeks ago: On the eve of the first BCS Standings, No. 1 (LSU) and No. 2 (California), both lose.

Last week: The BCS Standing have now set the field and then No. 2 (South Florida), No. 6 (South Carolina) and No. 7 (Kentucky) all lose.

So no one in anybody’s top five should feel comfortable right now because no matter where a team is ranked, the schedule says they can take a hit before the season is over.

Here is my top five and the opportunity all have to lose down the stretch.

1. LSU (7-1): After that miracle last Saturday night against Auburn, LSU looks like a team of destiny. They also have more good football players than anybody else. But the Tigers, who have this week off, have to go to Alabama on Nov. 3. Then they will probably have to play Florida in the SEC championship game.

2. Ohio State (8-0): Really good defense. So-so on offense. That formula worked in 2002 when the Buckeyes won the national championship. Ohio State has to go to Penn State this Saturday and Michigan on Nov. 17. They also play Illinois in the Horseshoe on Nov. 10.

3. Boston College (7-0): The Eagles have to go to Virginia Tech Thursday night and winning in Blacksburg won’t be easy. There are also road game with at Maryland and Clemson left.

4. Oklahoma (7-1): Don’t read too much into the fact that the Sooners struggled with Iowa State (17-7). The Sooners have the easiest path to running the table but a Nov. 17 trip to Texas Tech could be interesting.

5. Oregon (6-1):I like the Ducks and quarterback Dennis Dixon. Their only loss was to Cal (31-24) and in that game Oregon fumbled on the one-yard line and lost a chance to tie. We’ll find out in the next two weeks if the Ducks get to stay here as they host Southern Cal and Arizona State.

On a thread about upsets Barnhart says this:

“Then they will probably have to play Florida in the SEC championship game.”

The same Florida with South Carolina, Georgia, and Vanderbilt left on its schedule. The same Florida with an average defense (at best) and a one man offense. Florida is overrated and more susceptible to an upset than anyone. And with 2 conference losses in the bag, that would make an SECCG appearance pretty difficult.

If not Florida, then who? The Dawgs? I don’t see them getting past Florida, Auburn, and Kentucky without at least one loss, and they could very well lose all three, with Auburn finding its stride, Kentucky possibly the 2nd best team in the conference and Florida being, well, Florida.

I think Tennessee will fall to Arkansas, and possibly Kentucky. Unfortunately for Kentucky, their upset came over LSU in the other division, and both SC and Florida hold the head to head over them.

Florida probably has the easiest path. All they have to do is beat SC, Vandy, and Georgia, and they’re in. I think SC will give them the most trouble. Florida is fortunate that their two losses was against the SEC west, so no one in the East holds the head to head over them.

Not Buying the Hype never mentioned Georgia would win… but let’s be honest. Tebow is Florida’s offense… and whatever good the bye-week did for Tebow, was lost against Kentucky.

Whether or not Georgia can beat Florida, Tebow is getting dinged each week… they have as good a chance as anyone in the SEC East to lose another game or two.

UK will run the table. UGA will upset the Gators because Tebow is hurt worse than is being told. Auburn and UK will beat UGA and as always, UGA will beat Tech. UGA goes 8-4 again and wins bowl game 9-4.

LSU/UK rematch in SECCG. LSU wins and plays Oregon for national title.

First, it was Meyer’s offense won’t work against the big boys…then it was, well, Tebow won’t be able to do that as a full time starter, now it is well, it is only a matter of time until Tebow gets hurt…sooner or later you people will stumble into being right…Tebow may very well get hurt, the same way David Greene got hurt, Shockley got hurt, etc. It is a part of football. It is not something, that, if it happens, makes you suddenly know what you are talking about.

Since 92 the Gators have had the week off before the Georgia game every year but 2004. Hmmmm. Georgia has not had an off week prior to the game previously known at the Cocktail Party since 90. Not saying that this is the primary reason for the streak as many of those Spurrier teams walloped Goff’s boys, but most of the games for the past 10 years have been close.

A week off is a big deal however. Last year Arkansas blew out Auburn, Florida whipped Georgia, LSU beat Tennessee and a bad Ole Miss team came within an eye lash of beating LSU in Baton Rouge, all after a bye week. This year Auburn beat Florida, the Gators whipped UK and UT pounded the Dawgs all after having a week off.

Based on recent history and recent performances the Gators should win. Then again, nothing about this year has been as predicted so far.

By Atlanta Gator

October 23, 2007 11:42 AM | Link to this

Ltrain——Yes, there is an element of wishful thinking involved on the part of many non-Gators, and among a few, there is an unseemly element of those that would wish an injury on a 20 year-old athlete. That’s not right, by any standard. That having been said, the Gators have three very good back-up QB’s, two of whom are physically bigger than Tebow and all but one of the Gators’ scholarship running backs. For those who wish young Tebow harm, please know that it’s bad karma to wish an injury on anyone … so, be careful what you wish for; you may regret it.

And atleast we scored more than 6 points. The cocks are way overrated and will finish a normal 7-5 but will finish dead last in the east. By the way, the dogs will beat you by 4 touchdowns next year!

Not wishing any harm to Tebow or anyone else. Fact is, Tebow IS ALREADY HURT. He was clearly holding his shoulder walking off the field Saturday and he is not going to practice AT ALL this week.

He is 75-85% of the UF offense. Backups might be good but they ain’t him. Could be reversal of 2005 where UGA clearly had the better team but without DJ lost 14-10.

Lets take a look at Florida’s “easy path” shall we. Georgia: Last year’s NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP team needed to run back a Georgia fumble for a touchdown to win this game. South Carolina: Last year’s NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP team needed to block a potentially game winning field goal to win this game. Vandy: Last year’s NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP team had to fend off a Vandy 4th quarter rally to beat the Dores by a whopping 6 points.

Even with a dominant defense, senior QB, and diversified offense that path wasn’t so easy was it? So now with a 2 loss team and a deadbeat defense the Gators are claiming an “easy path” to the SECCG. This in a year where upsets are the order of the day. And I’M the ignorant one. Somebody’s wearing their jean shorts a little too tight these days.

Florida=OVERRATED.

Anyone notice how close the scores have been at the “Party”? The Dawgs just need a break and they can win. Reptile defense has been giving up points. If we have any Coaching(play to win)then Stafford and company will score(passing down field) and we’ll win 31-28. …..Has anyone read the ABH today? Caleb King has been practicing with the big boys. Hmmmmmmmmmm!

By Atlanta Gator

Not Buying the Hype——No, sir. The Gators are not claiming the easiest path to the SECCG. That would be some blogger guy named “Josh H” above.

Some of us have watched Vanderbilt play this year, and know what UGA is capable of on a good day. Furthermore, many Gator fans are intimately familiar with coaching skills of the Evil Genius. Not easy at all … well, maybe FSU is a gimme, but not Vanderbilt.

I have to agree with Tony. There are so many upsets this year, the term is going to be redefined.

I hope my Tigers can win out - at this point a second loss will kill their shot at a BCS title.

When I saw the schedule, I knew UK was our “trap game”. I hoped for a 2-1 record through the Florida/Kentucky/Auburn trifecta.

Now we get a week to rest before we play No Integrity Cash is King. Unfortunately, they do too.

Atlanta Gator—-I wholeheartedly agree with you. Reminds of a saying my mom had, “Bad wishes fall in your own dishes.” I have to wonder about Meyer’s wisdom, though, in subjecting Tebow to a season full of pounding. I have the impression that if Meyer asked Tebow to run through a brick wall, Tebow would do it in a heartbeat. Just because he would do it doesn’t mean you go ahead and have him do it. At some point, the coaching staff has got to say, “Enough is enough.”

As far as being overrated, I can count on one hand the college QBs that are as good as or better than Mr. Tebow.

Despite another crummy year for my Cats, this has been one amazing and throughly enjoyable season.

Hype, you are confused by Dawg delusions. Reality is you are comparing vastly different opponents in total defensive stats. UGA have put up their vaunted defense numbers against conference opponents Vandy, USC, Ole, TN and USC. Meanwhile, UF played MSU, AU, LSU and KY. Think those are slightly different offenses? Only common opponent is TN. and you all know what happened in that game. Then wait until KY and AU scorch you, too. This is not kool-aid (actually, it’s Gatorade.)

The defensive stats are a joke. If you had any clue about football you would watch the intensity on the field and most importantly the results not meaningless stats watered down by games against poor teams.

Why does UGA’s defense have better stats than UF?

  1. Schedule - UF has played LSU/AU/UK…UGA has played UT/Bama/SC…no comparison

  2. UF plays leading by more than one score most of the time which forces their opponents to open up their offense…UGA ALWAYS plays from behind trying to catch their opponents which allows teams to play conservative and milk the clock

  3. UF gets big leads and then plays soft in the 4th quarter because they can.

Bottom line is UF has a weak secondary but UGA is weak in every single area especially coaching. If you think the bogus stats you quote mean anything then I guess UK should feel good that they beat UF in every stat except one…THE SCOREBOARD!!!!

There is a big difference between the 2002 Ohio State team and this team. This team’s offense is more balanced, with the ability to strike in many ways. Me neither…since he did not have ONE carry in the win against Kentucky…the game plan works but in traditional football sense it is STUPID! Tebow fakes run and passes or Tebow fakes pass and runs…how ingenious…otherwise it is some gimmick play end around or WR screen to Percy Harvin (who is good). I may be a bitter Ohio State fan thanks to the whippin UF gave us and our inflated egos last year, but that was then…if we would have lined up in 2 TE and pounded the run the outcome would have been much different. And the idea that Ohio State “being mentioned” in the top 5 is a joke…that is just ridiculous…we have continued to win (albeit against a weak schedule) but a win is a win and you can’t blame us for Michigan and Wisconsin losing games they should win…which seems to be the problem in college FB right now…every game is loseable if your team doesn’t show up…ask USC and all of the other top 10 teams that have lost to unranked opponents. Fact is the Big Ten is not good right now…I do believe it is better than the ACC though with all of those so called powerhouses struggling.

One other comment on Tebow…as mentioned earlier in this post I definitely can see him as a cheeleader…been saying that all season…just hilarious I’m not the only one that had a hit on my GAYdar.

But he’s still one tough cheerleader who I wouldn’t want mad at me!

Let me just say that all the hype about Time Tebow…..Talk all you want to about him. The dawgs came in and showed him what they were made of. This was the best game on television Saturday. The dogs came in and played with heart!
