Sizing up the wild, wacky SEC East

After another wild weekend, here’s our ranking of the top five teams in the SEC East and their chances of playing in the conference championship game on Dec. 1 in Atlanta:

1. FLORIDA

— Record: 5-2, 3-2 SEC

— SEC games left: Saturday vs. Georgia (Jacksonville), Nov. 3 vs. Vanderbilt, Nov. 10 at South Carolina.

— Comment: Two teams on this list (Tennessee, Kentucky) allowed a combined 104 points vs. UF. No one can keep up with the Gators’ athletes on offense.

2. SOUTH CAROLINA

— Record: 6-2, 3-2

— SEC games left: Saturday at Tennessee, Nov. 3 at Arkansas, Nov. 10 vs. Florida.

— Comment: Like Florida, Steve Spurrier & Co. are in if they just win out. That’s easier said than done, given the state of the Gamecocks at quarterback.

3. KENTUCKY

— Record: 6-2, 2-2

— SEC games left: Saturday vs. Mississippi State, Nov. 10 at Vanderbilt, Nov. 17 at Georgia, Nov. 24 vs. Tennessee.

— Comment: Talented enough to run the table but even that might not be enough. They’d lose the tiebreaker to either Florida or South Carolina, which both beat UK.

4. TENNESSEE

— Record: 4-2, 2-2

— SEC games left: Saturday vs. South Carolina, Nov. 10 vs. Arkansas, Nov. 17 vs. Vanderbilt, Nov. 24 at Kentucky.

— Comment: Even if they play more like they did against Georgia (21-point win) and less like they did against Alabama (24-point loss), they still need Florida to stumble.

5. GEORGIA

— Record: 5-2, 2-2

— SEC games left: Saturday vs. Florida, Nov. 10 vs. Auburn, Nov. 17 vs. Kentucky.

— Comment: It will take more than a rare cocktail party win to make it: UGA needs to win out and hope both South Carolina and Tennessee slip up somewhere.

It may not be the Dawg’s year, but man I love the unpredictability of this season! Wacky stuff. Its too bad we just beat each other up and leave teams like Ohio St the easy road. Cough cough…..playoff, cough.

Dawgs have alot of work to do to win out, but the good news is that South Carolina and Tennessee still have to play each other, so that will be a loss for one of them. Then the other only has to lose one…anything can happen…Go Dawgs!

I love the Bulldogs chances as a spoiler this season. We do not have anything to lose because everyone expects us to lay an egg the rest of our conference games. Altough, it is going to take some serious football to win out. Go Dogs!!!! It appears that Auburn is starting to play some serious football.

NOT TO CHANGE THE SUBJECT, BUT….’ Last year all I can recall when UGA lost to Vanderbilt was all about how horrible the Dogs were, how over-rated,etc. Now the tables are turned, but AJC cannot even talk the truth about the hush-hush game that took place this afternoon. Get with it, you AJC sportswriters and tell the truth about what happened to Spurrier’s guys. I only wish I could have seen him throw his visor one more time. Atlanta isn’t that far from Columbia — give them hell for a year like you did to the Bulldogs for losing to such a “bad team” as Vanderbilt. I cannot believe you aren’t treating them as you did UGA.

Tony Barnhart: Your evaluation of the SEC East is abysmal. You can’t even get your facts straight. Georgia is 3-2 (not 2-2) in the SEC East and tied for first place, bud. Yet you put the first place Bulldogs in last place. Georgia has to at least be ranked higher than Tennessee. They have quality wins over Alabama, OK State, and a Vanderbilt team that flexed their collective muscles over your no.3 team: USC. You admit that UK has no chance to win the SEC East, so why even rank them above UT and UGA? The bottom line is that UT and UK should be the bottom two teams because they aren’t in it. The rankings should be in order of best chance to win the league:

  1. Florida

  2. USC

  3. UGA

  4. UT

  5. UK

SC beat Georgia and he says ‘it’s not like they’re some big powerful football team.”

Then he loses to Vandy who the Dawgs beat and he says, ‘Vandy had 3 losses, but they were beat by Georgia [etc], three top-25 teams.’

What a sorry piece of sh1t.

I hate to say it but if the team that showed up for the SC, Tenn, Mississippi, games shows up it could get real ugly. Florida is going to score and our offense has been atrocious at times. I hope we took advantage of the bye week. It could happen… GO Dawgs!

I’m as big of a UGA fan as anyone but how anyone could place the dawgs above the Vols is beyond me. And Kentucky looks better than UGA. Certainly they have a better QB. As far as the Gators go, I hate to say it but that game has become more to us than to them. It can’t be a real rivalry if they win every year just like it wasn’t when we won all of the time. They’re a better program.

This season is far from over and the Georgia is still in it… but they have to have to play a complete game against Florida to win (and even if they don’t, Tebow is getting worn down - he looked like he needed another bye week at the conclusion of yesterday’s game).

Hmmm…let’s see. Seems like I remember a UT fan give me this “UGAG beat Bama, UT crushed UGAG. What makes you think Bama will even keep it close?” Answer…they didn’t. BAMA CRUSHED THE VOLS! Oh, and another one “Gatorman, could you yell louder? I can’t hear you since you are so far down in the SEC East.” Fallen Queers, shut your mouth, go back home and grow some chest hair. You’ve had one good game against UGA and most everyone looks good against UGA. Florida runs the table and UT stays home until they get crushed in their bowl game…AGAIN!

By UGAstillinit

October 21, 2007 8:39 AM | Link to this

tomkat1, you are dead on. FL, UT, SC and KY should be ranked ahead of UGA. Any win for us in our remaining schedule (with the exception of Tech) will be considered a major upset. UGA is very young, very average on offense, horrible on defense and not consistant at all. I’m considering not watching the blood bath in Jacksonville just so my whole weekend won’t be ruined. I love the dawgs, but I’m keeping it real. But, then again, whoda thunk Vandy would beat SC in Columbia so badly?

By brewdawg

October 21, 2007 8:57 AM | Link to this

Remember tony, UT and SC play eachother, so there’s one of your “slip-ups” right there. It would be a tall task for UGA to win out, but if they do, they will probably represent the East. I’m thinking SC beats Tennessee, and Florida beats South Carolina. First things first… beat the Gators!

By steve

October 21, 2007 9:19 AM | Link to this

The Gators have the worst defense I’ve ever seen (and I’ve been a Gator fan since 1958). Just run the football up the middle, throw a couple of screens and an occasional long ball. Most any team can whip these kids if they can keep Tebow and Co. from getting too many snaps. I predict two maybe three more SEC losses for the Gators…this is not the year of the Gator by a long shot.

Have most of you not been paying attention to this college football season? This year is the year that almost anyone can beat anybody, if they play smart and hard. Giant Killer Appy State lost to a rebuilding Ga. Southern this weekend. Admittedly, every team left on our schedule has the capability of beating us, but we also have the ability to beat all of them. Win or lose, if the Dawgs give it all and never quit, I’ll be happy. If they do that, they’ll have great chances in every game. I think I like being the underdog in these games.

By Buck in the NW

October 21, 2007 11:51 AM | Link to this

The only way the Dawgs win is in a track meet and that’s something that CMR can’t control so with Moreno, Southerland and Stafford we have to score a lot of points Does CMR know how to do that? We’ll need TDs not FGs to win. A long FG may win it but it’ll take TDs to get to that point. Notice that again LSU went for the win, not the FG. and won but then they’re use to that, we’re not.

I am optimist …but also a realist. Dawgs just too young in the wrong postions this year and next - but the experience we are getting will pay dividends 2009. Next years team should be better…but the schedule is brutal with Alabama and LSU!!! and the overall w/l 2008 record will be Jim Donnan like if we are fortunate.

Not this year guys….our dawgs are toast for the season. UF is getting better with each game….dawgs are not.

South Carolina was just plain tougher.

Tennessee was just superior.

Vandy - we were just plain lucky…but give us credit for driving the field.

Gators, Wild Cats and AU are just better this year….any victory will be an upset.

That leaves Troy as the only high probable victory and GT will probably be favored as this may be their year.

Lets sit back and root for these young pups to fight the good fight…pull for the upset….and look for improvement.

you never know, especially with the way this college football season has gone so far. We are young but I think we can win our games, especially if we don’t turn the ball over and have no stupid or flagrant penalties. Ball control offense would seem to be an early game plan, but something tells me, coach bobo has some special things in his playbook just for this game. GO DAWGS! Best of luck the rest of the year we will need it

anybody in the sec east can beat every team in the sec east on any given saturday. georgia ‘s defense should not be in the game against florida’s tebow, but on october 27 who knows? pull for south carolina over tennesee , then florida over south carolina. dawgs still have a chance, slim yeah, but i have seen crazier things happen.(alabama killing tn , vandy beating sc) of course it wasn’t spurrier’s fault vandy kicked his butt, it was his qb’s inability to change plays at the line. spurrier is a lowclass piece of dog poop.

well, we will see, no matter what everyone says and what everyone thinks, both teams will put the pads on play the game on the field, not on some experts paper. I’m not smoking nothing, I just think florida will lose this year, period, and I also think that Tim Tebow will be hurt in the first quarter, bye bye any kind of running game one dimensional not too good, but harvin will prob get some end arounds or reverses, we will just have to play sound defense. Anyone notice how Alabam beat UT? By throwing short to intermediate passes to control the clock. JPW had 28 pass attempts at halftime. Stafford had 4 attempts at the end of the 1st quarter. Watching the game was painful b/c it just wentto show you that we did not have the right game plan in order to when the game. UT had 28 pass attempts and still had a 18 minute to 12 minute advantage in T.O.P.

Mike,

And yet UGA has been to more SEC Championship games since Richt’s arrival than FL, TN, SC, KY, and Vandy.

Actually, They have been to as many as all those programs combined.

You predict 5-6 and yet it has been more than 30 years since UGA last went 5-6. It is possible, but not likely.

Will you come back on these boards and say you were wrong if UGA beats FL, Auburn, or Kentucky?

Actually, what you will do is tell us that (fill in the blank) is not a good team this year after the UGA victory and that is why the Dawgs won, just like every other year when the Dawgs win between 9-13 games… right?

We may not beat UF but if we do we have as good a shot as anyone in the east. UT will lose one more, as will Carolina. We win out and we go,but we are young so lets just play it out and see. Barnhart’s rankings make plenty sense. I support the hometeam, but I agree w/ another poster in how anybody could rank UGA ahead of UT is beyond me. Tennessee was clearly the superior team in UGA-UT game. Kentucky looks like the #2 team, but even w/ the Vandy upset S. Carolina would have to be ahead of them (at least until the UT-SC game) since SC convincely won that matchup. Florida is the only logical pic for #1 at this pt. So right now I’d say it’s: 1. UF 2. USC 3. UK 4. UT 5. UGA; just like Barnhart put it.

I’m really tired of the “Cocktail Party” which is just another home game for the Gators.

I can’t believe UGA has allowed this game to be hosted in Jacksonville all this time.

I think this game should go to a home at home game or swith every other year to the Georgia Dome to make it more fair.

Giving a rival home field advantage for every game is just not smart.

How is it home field advantage when UGA has half the fans? Just because it is the same state doesn’t give Florida any advantage. Do you think UGA would have done any better the last 17 years if the game had been played in Valdosta? I never heard any complaining about Jacksonville until UGA started to lose. The game was played in Athens once in the 90’s and Florida almost set the record for points scored by an opponent in Sanford stadium. Stop making excuses. Either beat Florida or admit they are better.

It will take more than a rare cocktail party win to make it: UGA needs to win out and hope both South Carolina and Tennessee slip up somewhere.

Ummm … somebody might want to inform Barnhart that TN and USC play this weekend & college football now uses overtime so somebody’s gonna lose. There’s one slip up. USC still has FL left on their schedule and TN still has 4 SEC games including KY on the road. I think both will lose.

Hard part - UGA winning out. Yikes Maybe Stafford will finally show what his coach keeps bragging about… maybe?

Hilarious. SOS had fun insulting the Dawgs earlier this season (who he was lucky to beat) and now he loses to the cellar-dwelling Commodores. I thought the ‘Cocks might roll into Knoxville and put a whippin on ole Phil and his ‘billies but not now. UT is going to be one PO’d team after getting their posteriors jacked up behind their ears by a ‘Bama team that was missing a number of starters (by the way, how’d THAT feel Vols?)? ‘Them Dawgs’ beat the Tide when they were: 1) undefeated, 2) at full strength, 3) favored over UGA, 4) ranked higher, and 5) Bryant-Denny was still coming unglued with Saban euphoria! That atmosphere was off the charts. That being said, I don’t think Spurrier is MAN enough! UT will still probably kill the Gamehens and it’s be 0-fer against the Tennessee teams for Stephanie.

Everyone wanted to dismiss UGA last year for losing to UK and VU. Well, UK beat No. 1 last week (LSU) before facing the Gators, then lost by only a TD against the defending Nat’l Champs in a shoot out. Now Vandy beats a rare, highly ranked SC team WITHOUT Jay Cutler. Sure the ‘Dores came close to beating the Dawgs this year, but no cigar. Ask SOS which result he’d take: an “escape” like UGA had according to J. Schultz (which is only part of the story—the Dawgs still had to drive the length of the field to win); OR a big ole “L” like Spurrier earned—at home no less (in the what, “Chicken Coup?”).

No doubt the ‘Dawgs have their collective work cut out for them. I’m a realist. It is not however, impossible. There were untold numbers of naysayers last year that said UGA would lose out to everyone on their schedule after they fell to VU and UK. We all know what happened then…and this year’s even whackier.

Go Dawgs!

CFan — UGA is not the “home team”. Georgia Tech is. UGA is located in Athens, GA, over an hour away. Athens has its own newspaper. Georgia Tech is located in Atlanta. Unfortunately we have the AJC, which may as well be the Athens newspaper…

I’m not UGA fan, but I hope the Dogs beat the crap out of tebow. Somebody needs to show that little twit what it feels like to get hit.

Gordon’s comments above prompted me to chime in again. I have maintained this position throughout this “drought” period against UF for UGA that began in 1990. For many decades Georgia went into Jacksonville with full expectations to win—even when they weren’t supposed to (and unlike some of my UGA bretheren, I maintain that UF did have some great teams prior to Spurrier). The field doesn’t play, and neither does the state of locale. In fact many Floridians have nicknamed Jacksonville as the “Capital of South Georgia.” I believe the largest Bulldog Club is there as well. UGA needs to simply man up against the Gators and play ball, get over this funk, and quit making excuses about geography.

The beautiful thing about the SEC championship, like the Big 12 and ACC, it is the only legitimate form of playoffs in the NCAA. If we could get other conferences like the Big Ten to play along, we would be one step closer to a national playoff system. It amazes me, however, that some of you guys still don’t understand how it works. Georgia is listed below SC and Tenn because we lose the tie breaker in the head to head matchups. Georgia needs South Carolina to beat Tenn this weekend and then hope Florida beats SC later on. Georgia then has to beat KY, Fla. and Auburn, though, and that’s just probably not gonna happen. GO DAWGS

Well said, NW Ga Dawg. My team, Georgia Tech, needs to do the same thing against UGA. Stop making excuses about academics, and either beat them or admit they are better.

Georgia will lose to Fla. because Stafford does not have what it takes to beat them, even if Tebow is hurt. We may get lucky and beat Kentucky or Auburn, but I see that being very difficult this year. I hope that there will be some changes made on the structure of the coaches, (Martinez and Bobo), Richt really needs to eat his words by stating that Stafford was the best quarterback he has ever coached, what a bunch of crap. This is not because like most people say we are a young team, Stafford will suck the next two years as well. At least we will beat the BUGS as ALWAYS.

The Gaytors are too confident right now..the week off is so crucial this season with all the competition in the league..No more whining UGA fans about the trip to jacksonville..UGA used to beat Florida down year after year in Jacksonville and no one was complaining then..all these games the past several years have been very close..UGA had 02, 03, and with Shockley definately win in 05..but found a way to lose..Even last year UGA kept it close and if not for a late fumble that Florida landed on and a penalty on UGA on a huge 3rd down UGA might have tied the 06 game..Georgia finds a way in the end in a close/tough game..Brandon Coutu will be the difference maker

Mark, if we finished the season with 4 straight losses, that means we would beat UF. And I doubt we would go to the Independance bowl with 6 losses. Although it is tempting if if means beating UF.

I agree with the blogger who posted before i did. Stafford cant hold Tebows jock! He constantly overthrows receivers, and he dosent make good plays. David Greene is the best quarter back Richt has ever coached. Bobo and Martinez should be out after this year. Martinez is a horrible coordinator. Van Gorder never let this happen. Bobo calls whatever Richt wants him to call. He has no creativity. This is a year for fthe dawgs to spoil someone elses season, the sad thing about it is that next year Florida is going to be even better along with Auburn SC, Tennessee and KU. I cant wait until Coach Richt takes over for Bobby Bowden at Florida state. Then we can hire Rich Rodrequez from West Virginia

MikeySAV & GeorgiaFan,

If an onside kick is the only thing we can come up with as an example of winning a game by player talent and coaching cleverness, then we are really in trouble. I want my Dawgs (Class of ‘79) to win as much as anyone and more than most this week since it’s against Florida. But it’s sickening to see players not ready to play a game, overthrown balls, poor or no blocking, dropped passes and playcalling that defies logic. (Way down in the first half against UT, 3rd & 10 and we run a Drive 0 play!) If we drop three or more games of these last five are you still supporting Richt, Bobo and Martinez?

Hey, I love the Dawgs, but this year’s team doesn’t have the fire to successfully take on Florida, Auburn, and Kentucky. We have been hit and miss all season, and we’ve yet to figure out how to play the first half. Tough to get many conference wins when we’re only playing the second half. Stafford is ok, but he’s no Tim Tebow. I’m tired of hearing about how ‘young’ we are. Lots of young players in the SEC these days. CMR needs to fire these boys and get them playing with some INTENSITY. I think most Dawg fans expect some losses and don’t feel badly so long as the team PLAYED well. But this hot and cold, on again off again, lack of consistency is driving me crazy. You read over and over about all the talent we’ve recruited and that’s great. But when are we going to turn all that talent into SEC victories? Or at least consistently well played football? I don’t see them getting better week to week.
