The Fearless Friday Forecast

We were 8-2 last week because I wasn’t smart enough to pick Kentucky over LSU and because I took a flyer on Central Florida over South Florida, which crashed and burned, 64-12. That gives us a record of 49-21 on the season.

After all of the upsets we’ve had in the first half of the season, and again last night when South Florida lost to Rutgers, you should know that the fun is just beginning.

So here, without further delay, is another edition of the Fearless Friday Forecast.

1. Army at Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets and Tashard Choice stepped up at Miami last Saturday and will use this game as a tune-up for the visit from Virginia Tech on Nov. 1. Tech needs to make sure no one gets hurt and that QB Taylor Bennett builds up his confidence. He’ll need it against the Hokies. Georgia Tech 31, Army 7.

2. Miami at Florida State: Remember when this game used to mean something? For the first time since 1977 neither team is ranked for this once-proud rivalry. Both are coming off losses. You have to give the edge to Florida State because the Hurricanes have been so bad on the road. Florida State 14, Miami 10.

3. Florida at Kentucky: Kentucky’s win over No. 1 LSU last week was very impressive. But the Gators have had a week off and have to win or they are done in the SEC race. Kentucky will play hard but after three overtimes last week, the emotional tank will start to run dry in the second half. Florida 28, Kentucky 21.

4. Auburn at LSU: Like Kentucky, LSU has had two straight tough games. After a shaky start, Auburn is starting to play well. Auburn has won eight straight SEC road games. Coach Tommy Tuberville has won nine of his last 10 games against teams ranked in the Top 10. Earlier in the week I liked Auburn. But after last night’s loss by USF, LSU knows that it will be no worse than No. 3 in the next BCS standings. LSU will get it done at home. LSU 14, Auburn 10.

5. Tennessee at Alabama: Nick Saban gets his first big rivalry game as the coach of the Crimson Tide. The Volunteers still control their own destiny in the SEC East and need a win to set up a big showdown with South Carolina next week. Tennessee is more athletic than Alabama and it will show in the fourth quarter. Tennessee 21, Alabama 20.

6. Vanderbilt at South Carolina: The Gamecocks are No. 6 in the BCS and still in the hunt for the SEC East championship. The offense is still struggling so you will see Blake Mitchell back at quarterback before this game is over. South Carolina wins because the defense is really good. Vanderbilt will play hard but get its heart broken again. South Carolina 21, Vanderbilt 10.

7. Central Michigan at Clemson: This is a dangerous game for Tommy Bowden. He’s got to convince his players that the Chippewas are for real and can fling it all over the place with quarterback Dan LeFevour, who has thrown 12 touchdown passes in his last two games. Clemson 28, Central Michigan 21.

8. Texas Tech at Missouri: This one may take five hours to play. Graham Harrell (Texas Tech) and Chase Daniel (Missouri) have combined for over 5,000 yards of passing in just half a season. Harrell is completing 74.35 percent of his passes. Daniel completes 68.9 percent. Missouri’s defense is a little bit better. Missouri 42, Texas Tech 37.

9. Southern Cal at Notre Dame: The Trojans are No. 14 in the BCS so they need to start winning with some style points. Notre Dame has improved but the Irish are still a bad football team. Like they did in 2005, the Irish have grown the grass pretty tall at Notre Dame Stadium hoping to slow down the Trojans. Won’t help. Southern Cal 35, Notre Dame 13.

10. Michigan at Illinois: Despite early non-conference losses to Appalachian State and Oregon, Michigan is on top in the Big Ten and hopes to stay there until it hosts Ohio State on Nov. 17. But the Illini have a mobile quarterback (Juice Williams) and that has given the Wolverines trouble. Michigan is a slight favorite but I like Illinois at home. Illinois 21, Michigan 20.

Don’t count Auburn out so quickly. We want as bad as LSU. LSU is beatable, last weekend proved that. In fact, Florida should have beat them, too! War Eagle and go, Tubberville. Bring us home a win.

Mel:

Show me a team that turns the ball over 5 times and still wins.(excluding one that is playing the Falcons)

AU did that against MSU and USF and still could have easily won both of those games.

We didn’t and those things happen but if you think it will be a blowout tomorrow you are mistaken. Take the points man.

And remember AU only starts 2 SRs and 2 JRs on that defense that is every bit as good as LSUs.

Florida rolls, LSU-AUB is a toss-up (wouldn’t want to be in Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night, but Auburn seems to play best against the best teams), Tech-Army (who cares?), Miami-FSU (ditto),I would pull for Bin Ladin’s team over Tennessee (they at least take baths), I’m afraid UGA might win one more game the rest of the season….sigh.

Tony, stick to southern football — it’s what you know best, although that’s relative. Your analysis on any game outside the south is such a joke. Juice Williams got benched last weekend and isn’t even going to start, so maybe you should try again on that Michigan-Illinois pick. Moron.

Tony,

I have to agree that to most of the readers of the AJC Blog the FSU/Miami game does not mean anything. I couldn’t disagree more. This game still means more than almost any other game on the schedule. To the players it means something. To the coaches it means something. To the fans it means something. To the inmate population of Dade County (UM Alumni) it means something. and to the Seminole faithful it means something.

There were times when Georgia was crap (still is), Auburn was inconsistent (still is), LSU lost games they shouldn’t (still does), and Florida couldn’t win on the road (still does). So maybe things haven’t changed much after all!

Go noles!

I’m having a hard time accepting that Ohio State will stay undefeated and #1 and their best win will come against a team that lost to App. State. Ohio State will then be CRUSHED by whomever they play in the BCS Champ. game…..AGAIN. It won’t matter who they play. Auburn, LSU, South Carolina and Florida would roll Ohio State like a pumpkin on a hill. TN and KY would give them all they want, too.

By REALfootball

Matt, face it. The Big Ten is WAY down this year. You have about 2 x GOOD teams, but certainly no GREAT teams. Ohio State will win out and then get their eyes beat out in a BCS bowl.

Whats with this group ? It seems everybody loses interest unless Tony is picking a bag of sure things. I love it and hope it gets more confusing. Example: Appalachian State is probably the best team in the country. Lets have some controversy ! Are you sure Tech will beat Army ?

By 2N4YEARS

1) Tech wins, but it’s closer than 31-7…a LOT closer. 2) FlaSt pulls out a win in Miami, but it’s not pretty. 3) FLA bounces back & wins @ KEN. 4) LSU pulls out a win, but AU’s ‘D’ will keep it close for 2-1/2 quarters. 5) ALA beats TENN. 6) SC beats Vandy. 7) CLEM wins. 8) MIZZ wins. 9) USC wins. 10) MICH wins.

4-0 against top 5 teams 9-1 against top 10 14-1 on the road in the SEC

That is what you are betting against by picking LSU over Auburn. You can’t doubt Auburn in big games. Well the Auburn family doesn’t doubt but the rest of you just keep it up because that give us the edge by making Auburn the underdogs. Plus Auburn’s D is finally healthy and without those 4 starters they have been just as good as lsu’s D.

If the Auburn that beat Florida shows up in Red Stick, they will leave with a victory. Miles has shown that his coaching sometimes involves more brawn than brains, and AU is resurgent primarily because of great coaching, particularly on defense. We have Blackmon, Groves and others ready to play on defense, and a young offensive line that has really gotten our running game working. I suspect this will be a low-scoring affair with at least one defensive score by one or both teams.

Tuberville will stay at Auburn - he coaches at the dominant football power in the state and has a young team that is poised over the next couple of years to do very well in the SEC and the BCS.

$aban will bolt from Bama in 3 years or less when the ‘necks toss too many bricks through his window after losses to AU, UT and others.

AU has zero offense, a pretty good D (not LSU good, but top 25 good). Au O can’t touch LSU’s D. LSU has too may weapons on O. Auburn brags about holding Mcfadden to under 100, but they can’t hold LSu to under 150. We already have 1700 rushing yards in 7 games. Thats an average of 240 per game. Even with our turnover, penalty filled loss to KY in 3 overtimes they cold hardly beat us. Even with the Loss we racked up 400 yrds of offense. We’re #3 in the BCS after the SFla loss last night and we won’t reliquish that to a team who lost to Stuckey Burger Univ. See you the valley b*tchs! Geaux.

lucked out is not dominating the entire game until the middle of the 4th Qtr. 6. Vanderbilt keeps it close for 3 quarters. Prediction: Gamecocks by 13.

  7. You’re scraping the bottom, Tony. Prediction: Clemson by … whatever.

  8. Is this game relevant to anything or anyone within 500 miles of Atlanta? Prediction: I’m not watching it; I have grass to mow.

OK, I just want to point out one bit of DUMB logic that you should always avoid at all costs. DO NOT transfer wins to mean more than anything other that a team was better than the team they beat. I see the stupid logic of saying UGA beat Bama and Tennessee beat UGA so that means Tennessee should beat Bama. If that’s true, then tell me why LSU waxed South Carolina but South Carolina waxed KY. Shouldn’t the LSU win over South Carolina mean that LSU should have easily beaten KY?! Win transfer is a stupid stupid thing to do and it does not make any sense. Tennessee may beat Bama, may even beat them big. But it will have absolutely nothing to do with UGA in any way, shape, or form. It will simply mean that either Tennessee is a better team than Bama this year…or they aren’t.

BTW, good effort by the South Florida Bulls last night on national television, bu the outcome (if not the margin) was predictable. I love the shots that people take on the Dawgs! I would say that UGA has had a great run over the last decade, especially since they are the WINNINGEST TEAM IN THE SEC SINCE 1997 with 100 wins and 32 loses, the next team is Florida with 98 wins and 34 Loses, third is UT with 97 wins and 34 loses.

Also, UGA is the only SEC team to be ranked in the Top 25 for 10 straight seasons!

Enjoy this “whacky” season in the SEC UK and USC fans, because it should return to normal in the next few years with UGA, UT, and UF dominating the East.

Twilb, “Also, UGA is the only SEC team to be ranked in the Top 25 for 10 straight seasons!” That’s true… actually I think we are the only team in the entire country to be ranked in the top 25 at the end of the last 10 seasons. It’s a little known stat, but I think it’s fairly impressive and it demonstrates our consistency over the past decade.

Mikey…

If you call Army losing by 21 to BC “giving BC all they wanted”, then I hope Army also gives GT all they want. I guess Central Michigan hanging 47 on Army last week was “all they wanted” as well. Thanks for sharing your very obvious football knowledge with us.

So “Fearless” is predicting very close to the pointspread for each game? Interesting, Tony.

“Like they did in 2005, the Irish have grown the grass pretty tall at Notre Dame Stadium hoping to slow down the Trojans”

that has to be without doubt the dumbest comment ever written by a sports writer. I supposed the Irish also conjured up that storm last night that shook up USC on their plane ride into South Bend?

Notre Dame 21 USC 18 Touchdown Jesus is OVER this

Have to laugh, Look at the way the SEC has to kill themselves just to try to win the conference. Then you see such games as Ohio State/Purdue, Ohio State/Michigan State, Ohio State/Kent listed as big barn-burners.

South Flordia, West VA and all of those teams get bent out of shape when they lose the one “game” that they have to play each year.

Ohio State doesn’t play anyone, then goes to the big game and low and behold, they are done before the half is over.

There was actually whining on TV about USF maybe not getting to go to the big game if they went undefeated. Well ask Auburn about that scenario. Only an SEC team can make it through the tough schedules, championship game, undefeated and then get hosed because of some big time writers and sportscasters.

So Pac 10 get some new fishnets, Big 10 nice panties. ACC go play the military academies. Big East, the weedeater bowl, and the tire bowl await.

The great pumpkin Philapotamus will calmly flatten the Tide Saturday. Too many athletes and John Fitzsimmons Reputerton Parkerized Wilsontonian the XV111 is about as mediocre a QB as I have seen in years. Cats have a slim chance at Gators, but lizards could lose 4 IN A ROW!! aND Ga Tech, oh don’t care!

Tony..Tony..Tony….your hate for the Vols is so freakin obvious! How can you even fathom a 1 point win over the Tide??? The Vols will spank them like the red-headed stepchildren they are. Have you always hated Tennessee or have you acquired a taste over the last 2 years when they have totally demolished the little bitty Bulldogs??? Vol fans…go ahead and book your travel to Atlanta in December to watch the Vols take on whoever from the SEC West. Are you going to the game Tony or will you be saving up to see UGA down in Nashville @ the Music City Bowl??? ROCKY TOP BABY!!!!

The more I watch how Alabama is kicking the a$$ of Ainge the more I hate you Martinez. one million times we told you to load the box and blitz the damn QB, but your stupid ego has different view until Ainge put up 35 points on us. Martinez, you are just very very basic DC with no creativity what so ever. I really hate your girlie approach. grow some balls before you can be the Georgia Bulldogs DC. Go Dawgs

Lets see… Bammer had 5 players suspended for the game, so they just laid down- NOT. JPW passed for 364 yards and 3 TD’s .

Tony Barnhart has too many jobs. He has never been a great columnist or sports report for the AJC. Just average. Now so he has moved over to television he doesn’t have the time to get his facts straight (today’s article is just a sample he has printed mistakes all year) and his comments contradict themselves one week to the next. And he does have a crush on Urban Meyer and Tim Tebow. Also, it is funny watching Barnhart and Schlabach’s mutual admiration society on “Talking Football.” It’s like they are trying to help each other keep the secret that neither one has ever had an original idea about college football.
