Will Tech turn Taylor Bennett loose?

Five burning questions as we head into the weekend:

1. Will Georgia Tech turn Taylor Bennett loose? Coaches can’t say this or they would get run out of town. But I can say it. Saturday’s game with Army is a good time to work on the passing game, which the Yellow Jackets are going to need if they want to beat Virginia Tech on Nov. 1. Bennett threw it reasonably well against Miami but he needs to feel confident when the Hokies come to town two weeks from tonight. Probably wouldn’t hurt to get backup Josh Nesbitt a few extra snaps. One other thing: Tech needs to get an early lead and let No. 22 (Tashard Choice) spend the rest of the game with his feet propped up. That lad needs to be well rested on Nov. 1.

2. Can Kentucky do it one more time? This has been an incredibly busy week in Lexington as Kentucky continues to enjoy its win over No. 1 LSU while getting ready for Florida to come to Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday. There are no hotel rooms to be found as members of the national media descend on Lexington to cover the story. The spotlight on Kentucky last week was bright, but expectations were limited against the No. 1 team in the nation. Now the spotlight is brighter and expectations are high. How will UK react?

3. Does Rutgers have some magic left? A year ago Rutgers upset Louisville on a memorable Thursday night game that propelled the Scarlet Knights to an 11-2 dream season. South Florida, which is enjoying the heady status of being ranked No. 2, has to go on the road in a short week. Is tonight where USF stumbles?

4. How big is this game for Houston Nutt? Arkansas is 0-3 in the SEC. After the Hogs play at Ole Miss on Saturday, they still have to play South Carolina, Tennessee, Mississippi State and LSU. Arkansas will be the underdog in at least three of those games. But if Arkansas loses to Ole Miss on Saturday, does that seal Nutt’s fate? Or has this decision already been made?

5. Will Nick Saban get his signature victory? When you’re the head coach at Alabama, your official stamp on the program does not come until you beat Tennessee or Auburn in a game you’re not supposed to win. Well, Nick Saban gets his first shot at a signature victory on Saturday in Tuscaloosa. Tennessee has a better team with more athletes. But Alabama is playing at home. Saban was hired and paid $4 million to win a game like this.

**1) Doesn’t matter. Tech sux, as usual. 2) NO, KEN can’t. Not two in a row anyway. FLA wins. 3) I would normally pick S.FLA to beat Rutgers, but since it’s played on a Thurs. night and Thurs. night games, for some reason unknown, produce a winner from the under-dog, I’ll go with Rutgers to win this game. 4) ARK needs to win, but it may already be too late. 5) Yes, ALA will beat TENN Sat.

NO! Kentucky cannot do it one more time. For starters, this team has to be physically beaten after two tough games. Second, Florida just has better athletes and is coming off an open week. UF wins 33-23(www.GatorAlert.com)

That’s correct, after the USF humiliation, Auburn is no longer in the league. But if they bring their own set of “Bubba” ref’s with them to Baton Rouge, they might steal yet another one from L.S.U. —but I doubt it.

As an Alabama fan, I want to believe we will win on Sat but I just don’t know that we will get it done. I think it will be a close game as we have been in every game we have played this season. In the end, UT will have an edge against our thin D. I hope I am wrong! ROLL TIDE and GEAUX TIGERS!!! :)

Can’t see how Bama wins on Sat after barely getting past Houston and Ole Miss. With Ainge throwing darts all day and the revamped running game, UT should win easy. But since the game is in TTown, will be closer, but a UT win nonetheless. SEC East comes down to UT/KY in Lexington in last game of the year.

tony, what happened to ark having to beat au?at 0 and three sec, and with tough sec games coming up the decision on nutt has already been made.tech will work on winning the game, passing for 400 yds against army will not help bennett against vt’s defense,no more than a scrimmage.i agree on resting choice,if possible.uk can do it again, but i don’t think their d can get tebow and company off the field.sorry bama, not this week, unless phat phil is asleep at the switch.

After last year’s bowl game, thought Bennett would be GT’s answer. Johnson as a receiver and decoy, surely helped with Bennett’s numbers. Would like to see Bennett do very well. How much has the change in OC’s,negatively impacted the offense’s production.

I am a UGA grad, who was a huge Tech fan growing up - have a soft spot, though not a Gailey fan.

By Atlanta Gator

  1. Who knows? Living in Atlanta, I wish I could get excited about Georgia Tech football, but Chan Gailey always finds a way to lose at least two games every season that the Yellowjackets should win. I’m afraid that Tech is mired in permanent 6-to-8-win mediocrity as long as Gailey is the coach.

  2. If this season’s SEC pattern holds true, Kentucky will lose, having just won the signature game of Rich Brooks’ UK career against LSU. If so, the Gators will take it.

  3. This is one a couple of games remaining where we find out if the Bulls really are as good as they seem. Can USF sustain their recent level of performance, or have they been playing over their heads on emotion and adrenaline. We shall see. Rutgers should give USF a good game.

  4. Ole Miss should lose because they are emotionally and physically spent from giving their best efforts against teams that are bigger, more talented and deeper than the Rebs. If Arksansas loses this one, it’s because the wheels have come off and it really is time for a coaching change.

  5. Bama’s kids are playing the best ball that they are able for their new coach, and Tennessee is still is basking in the glow of their unexpectedly easy blow-out of UGA. Bama wins a close one in a nominal upset (see comment 2 above).

By GT

Tech needs to work on catching the ball. In fact the whole state of Georgia, from the Bulldogs to the Falcons needs some stickem. Seems like a few drills in practice or after practice might help. I think everybody is watching the speed of the receivers and not the ability to catch the ball. I notice the New England Pats had a little runt no one wanted in college tearing the place up, out in Dallas the other night, from Texas Tech. I bet some kid is playing for a Southern Conference team that could help Tech. Keep the speed burners to confuse em but get somebody that can catch after all the showboating is over. 4 million is not going to make Alabama an overnight winner in the SEC. If money did it Ok State would be playing in the NFL. I do think that salary should be remembered when Saban or any coach complains about not being given enough time to turn a program around. You accept the cash you accept the stress. I think in four years if Saban hasn’t got a contender they will hang him on the town square. How much is Spurrier making? He wouldn’t be stupid enough to go to Alabama and when he says USC is a contender people laugh which makes it fun to see South Carolina contend. People get wishing and reality mixed up and the old ball coach has to set them straight every once in a while. He would be hilarious at Bama.

By Navigator

No doubt Tech needs to get their catching gloves on, and maybe they will. Mr. 2Nwhatever, be careful suggesting that Tech sux for their record. The dogs still have to play Kentucky and Florida. It wouldn’t look too good for a team that consistently recruits in the top 10. Bad coach, bad quarterback, or maybe poor development of talent. Tech has at least a good excuse for poor showing, a poor coaching staff.

GT——You may recall that SOS was on Mal Moore’s short list, and SOS ended any serious discussion of filling the Bama coaching vacancy very quickly. The Evil Genius is no idiot; if he wins an SEC championship (even an SEC East championship) before he retires, he will be a hero and the best coach in USC’s history. If he jumped to Bama (and don’t think that they still wouldn’t love to have him), he would be expected to win the SEC West and contend for SEC and MNC titles every season. That’s an even more pressured situation than he left in Gainesville.

Atlanta Gator just summed up the last 6 years under Gailey with 2 short sentences.

Some would say Gailey’s overachieved at an engineering school where academics rein supreme and majors are limited. The grad rates would beg to differ, which indicates to me Gailey is landing talented kids. Furthermore, the list of Tech players in the NFL continues to grow.

Naturally, none of us are there during the week, but it does appear that Gailey does a much better job of preparation, scheming, and motivation when the team is against the wall and in desperate need of a win. As a favorite when pressure is light, they seem to go through the motions most of the game.

Five games remain; Tech should easily win three, but are talented enough to win all five with VT and UGA at home. I personally would look closely at what’s available if Tech doesn’t win at minimum, 4 of 5.

Calvin Johnson made Bennett look like Brady. I believe that the success of the Gator Bowl has created tremendous pressure on Bennett this year that has gotten to him. Bennett needs to throw more on first down.Just a 5-7 yard pass to give him some confidence and to keep them from being in a third and long which has been the case way to many times.Secondly Kentucky probably won’t beat Florida because they are more of a balanced threat than the one dimensional teams like Arkansas and LSU.Those teams are more of a run oriented offense and not so great on the pass which makes them easier to stop.

I think Auburn should removed from the SEC and replaced with USF. The state of Alabama has two schools in the SEC but the state of Florida only has one? That doesn’t seem right. Or maybe Auburn should just disband as a school altogether. Alabama could then get the hanfull of bright Auburn students, thus raising Alabama’s academic standards above third world.

All kidding aside, we’ll see what USF is made of tonight. Their qb Matt Grothe is probably their weakest link. He can be great at times but erratic at others. Against W. Virginia he basically threw the same interception twice - down the middle into double coverage. He also has gotten away with some highschool-type scrambles where he leaves the ball unprotected but manages to gain yards. Hopefully he can keep it together tonight.

No changes in Tech’s strategy will matter (for the long haul).

We have now hit the “mediocrity basement”.

The move that will make a difference to our program in total is to fire Gailey——RIGHT NOW (as at UNC).

I don’t think Bennett’s confidence in his own play is lacking. He may wonder sometimes if the receivers are going to catch the ball. I do think the staff could him and the overall production of the offense with more throws on 1st and 2nd downs. In the BC game TECH came out throwing and moved the ball quickly across mid-field. Just as soon as Choice got thrown for a 7 yard loss on a 3rd down screen TECH went back into their shell of running on 1st down and then taking it from there. They should be able to run the ball well against Army (80th vs the run) but they need to prepare and execute a game plan with early throws.

Grothe is the straw that stirs the drink (weakest link my a$$). The major reason the Bulls haven’t had this kind of success before is they never had a quality qb. Now they have one and you’re seeing the results. The Bulls are a complete football team. Their only weakness is in the field goal kicking dept. That’s their achilles heel and will prove to be detrimental tonight.

CornDawg, many schools would like Auburn out of the SEC especially Bama(5 in a row, Florida(kick their butt ranked #2 and #4, last two years), LSU,(cant win at Auburn and Auburn seems to do ok at Baton Rouge), all other SEC teams because Auburn wins on the road(14 out of last 15) SEC road games) and ruins "afternoon delights". Auburn win at Sanford, but in all due respect they win at Auburn, Third World Students, beats me?? Also Corn 45-14 since 2000, aint bad either…

Putting all of the insults aside for a moment, AU/LSU has been a great rivalry for a long time resulting in some very interesting (crazy) games. ‘88’ was still the most painful loss I can remember and the ‘94’ game was insane. LSU has a great team and they are obviously very tough at home. This Auburn defense though is actually playing a little better than LSU’s D at the moment so this is shaping up to be another typical SEC slugfest. War Eagle!

CornDawg——Actually, US News ranks Alabama and Auburn as the 91st and 96th national universities, respectively, following Georgia (59th), Florida (49th) and Vanderbilt (19th). A quick side-by-side comparison of the AU and UA admissions standards and typical freshman profiles suggest that both are drawing from a nearly identical pool of the better Alabama high school students. In any event, they aren’t exactly LSU or Mississippi State when it comes to academic credentials. LOL

Bennett is fine. Turn him loose! Do some decent play calling, put some velcro on the receivers hands and watch what happens! I bet 25% of his incompletions this year (or more) were drops, not bad throws. He isn’t perfect, but the kid has tools and he’s way, way better than a lot of folks seem to think. His frustration with the play calling is evident from the expression on his face. Adn to that end - I have yet to get a sense that Chan is giving him much if any support. Watch him on the sidelines during timeouts. And after the games, all of his comments are pretty neutral. The coach needs to back his players 100%, and give them a chance to do their jobs. That’s where confidence comes from, and that confidence breed success. I don’t think he fosters that kind of confidence in many of his players, and in return, I think their confidence in (and respect for) their coach is weak at best. GO JACKETS!

I recently escaped from AR and am happily back in SC. There is no way that Nutt will keep his job. Too many problems, Mustain, Malzahn, lady anchor friend, nasty boosters, illegal coach in booth (his brother), recruiting problems tied to creditability issues. He is long gone. Whatever you have ever heard about AR, sports or whatever, believe its worse than reported.

By Atlanta Gator

October 18, 2007 5:43 PM | Link to this

Gator Hater——The answer to your question is simple: NO.

The vast majority of Gator fans understand that this is not our team’s year. Our team has no workhorse running back, our defense has one returning starter, and there are a total of 21 scholarship juniors and seniors on the ‘07 Gators. There are more true freshmen, redshirt freshmen, and true sophomores getting playing time this year than virtually any other top-25 team. Those youngsters, however, are also among the most talented recruiting classes the last two years …

So, no sensible Gator will call for Meyer’s head, and, yes, the future for the Gators is bright. Perhaps you should tend to your own knitting, rather than messing in our team’s.

There is nothing about the Florida Gators I don’t respect. They lose close games to Auburn, last minute field goal, and LSU who had to use four downs more than once. They toasted a Tennessee team that toasted a Georgia team. Nobody is going to schedule Florida for homecoming not even Vanderbilt. As a Tech guy I would take there down year over our up year if I just knew what year was a up year for Tech.

Auburn has beat Florida when they were #1,#2, #4 and #5.How? CTT has a way to beat top 10 tens when the better team is on opposite side(COACHING).. Florida athletic programs are the very best, plus a very high academic standards for athletes and students. They have a huge advantage with large number of high schools with speed. We are interested in Nick Saban because he has won a national championship. We are interested in the SEC conference because they have won several national championships and in my opinion should have won more. I truly believe the NCAA is like Congress and they consciously or unconsciously say we cannot send all our tax dollars to the SEC and try to spread the wealth or the conference would have won more. I say this especially thinking of Auburn which I find year in year out one of the most interesting teams in the country. They have an understated coach who is actually very pleasant, who plays the toughest schedule in the SEC and the nation. This guy beat LSU and Florida last year in two of the most entertaining games in memory, loss to Georgia in another skull banger but left everything on the field. You have five coaches that have won national championships in the SEC and then you have Tuberville who may be better than most of them. It leaves coaches like Richt looking average as best when he has won several SEC championships and is not average by any means. As an ACC fan my hat is off to them as a southern born man I am very proud of what these schools have accomplished. Only the old Southwest Conference in it’s hay day of payola had anything comparable.

GT, correct about SEC, Auburn and Southwest Conference. I find it unreal for you to mention this conference, it was a wide discussion last week at Diner breakfast. The SWC played similar SEC today except, talent is more present than the past. They had great coaches, schedules were tough, stadiums full, and many Top 10 teams. One of the best backfield in history of football was SMU Pony backfield.. When different offensive sets or defensive schemes bounced around it came out of the SWC…ex. Wishbone, 5-2 defense,Split T, 4 deep (cornerbacks). Tech played SMU in those days and did very well.Arkansas was a member of SWC during this Era. NICE POST GT
