Auburn can win at LSU

Just one man’s opinion:

1. Auburn has a real shot at LSU: After two tough, physical games that went four quarters (and beyond), LSU has to be a drained football team. LSU still might be the best team in the country but now they’ve got to get back up to play a team in Auburn which has won eight straight SEC road games. I don’t care how talented a team is, it’s hard to get up to play three weeks in a row.

2. Kudos should go to Kentucky: Not for beating LSU last Saturday, even though that was a great win for the school. The UK administration deserves praise because it hung tough and stuck with coach Rich Brooks when the whole world (including me) thought he was gone after his third straight losing season in 2005. Brooks had been a good football coach a long time before he got to Kentucky in 2003. He knows what he is doing. Now Kentucky is reaping the benefits. It’s hard to be patient in college athletics but every now and then it pays off.

3. It’s sad to watch Miami and Florida State in decline: Over the last 20 years I’ve been lucky enough to see all but a handful of Miami-Florida State games. For sheer intensity, there was nothing like it. For so long, the level of play was the best that college football had to offer. On Saturday, for the first time since 1977, neither team is ranked. It’s just sad.

4. Clemson had better watch out: Who is Central Michigan, you ask? The Chippewas are the defending Mid-America champs and have the best quarterback in the league in Dan LeFevour (1,749 yards, 15 TD). Clemson has a much better team but the Tigers had better not take these guys lightly.

5. Every game for Alabama will be a struggle: Other than the opener with Western Carolina (52-6) every game for Alabama has been a struggle. Every game Alabama has left on its schedule, with the possible exception of Louisiana-Monroe (1-5) on Nov. 17, is going to be a struggle. That is this team’s identity. The good news for Alabama fans is that the Tide will win more struggles than it loses

1- This is life in the SEC. The only “breathers” are the out of conference games and even those can be tough, but us SEC football lovers wouldn’t have it any other way.

2-Yes, very seldom does a HC get that much rope, but I bet UK is glad they stuck with Rich.

3- Everything that comes around goes around.

4- Haven’t you been trying to warn Clemson all yesr ? have they listened ?

Tony, it was you that missed out on that LSU-KEN upset. I picked KEN to beat LSU. (If you don’t believe me go back & look at your ‘Fearless Friday Forecast’ from last week and my post name). I actually had that date circled before the season started. 1)And I’m here to tell you that you’re wrong again ‘IF’ you’re gonna pick AU to beat LSU. Could they? Sure they ‘could’. If S.FLA can beat AU then AU ‘could’ beat LSU. AU’s ‘D’ will keep them in the game until after half-time. LSU wins straight-up. 2)I called this one, you didn’t. ‘Nuff said. 3) Sad, so sad. Oh well. 4) CLEMSON needs to always watch out. Tommy Bowden carries them on more up & downs than Six Flags. 5) Yes, you’re correct here. ALA will continue to struggle, but they’ll beat TENN.

  1. LSU will beat the snot out of Auburn this weekend.
  2. KY is for real and stands a good chance of winning out if they can win this weekend.
  3. These two teams will re-surface.
  4. Tommy Bowden is gone!!!!
  5. Bama may struggle this year, but watch out in the next few years.

Ten bucks says Ole Miss wishes they had given David Cutcliff as much time as Ky has given Brooks. Can Bama beat UT? Recent history says no,but I think Saban will get a signature win at some point this year and some crazy things have happened so BEWARE Large Orange it might not take a Vol letdown in order for Bama to win this week. The “Big Orange” is LONG way from being unbeatable…Ask Florida

  1. Auburn/LSU is one of those games where you can throw out the records & it’s usually close. Wouldn’t be surprised if Auburn beats them.
  2. One of the CSTV guys picked Kentucky to win the SEC in the preseason & I laughed at him. He’s the one laughing now as they look totally capable of winning the East.
  3. I don’t mind Miami being down. They were a bunch of thugs in the late 80’s before Butch Davis finally brought that program some class.
  4. Clemson should know they should watch out to avoid their annual 4 consecutive game losses.
  5. Agree that Bama will struggle. They will not beat Tennessee. Ainge will torch their secondary.

I think Auburn winning at LSU is slim, but not impossible. I agree with Tony LSU is still best team in the country. Bama will never be in the ball game against Tenn, Vols not close I hope. Florida will make the SEC East more interesting with a win over Kentucky, if Florida secondary has improved.. SEC is getting down to nut cutting..

It’s sad to watch Miami and Florida State in decline. - TB

Not so much, Tony! You’re a fine journalist but I can’t help but wonder if you’re pulling for a Georgia-Florida State national championship matchup every year. Realize that 93% of the people reading your piece are scoffing at that opinion.

Do you have Bobby Bowden on your “buddy list”?!?

Why is it sad at all that neither FSU or Miami are ranked? The heydays Tony is reminiscing over involved two of the NCAA’s dirtiest football programs.

Until recently, Bowden didn’t even pretend to discipline his football players — anyone remember Deon Sanders bragging about how he never went to class. And Miami (who actually got caught) was on probation for several years before Butch Davis cleaned up the program.

Is that what you miss Tony? Two scumbag football programs who exploited young men at any cost just for the sake of winning? Maybe Tony, Deon, and Luther Campbell can get together, do some coke, and cry about the good ol’ days.

  1. Auburn 3 - L.S.U. 4

  2. UK is a good team but got LSU at the right time. Every SEC east game is up for grabs. Vandy/USC could be interesting. I think UK has as good a chance as anyone to go to the dome.

3 & 4. There’s a reason why the top three teams in the BCS are from the ACC, BIG 10 and Big east. Until we get a playoff system teams from weak conferences will outlast the big boys putting it on the line week in and week out.

FSU - UM = Mich - ND. Clemson = trainwreck.

  1. I remember a few weeks back Alabama sports writers (not fans) we’re circling Nov 3 as the game of the century! “Who’s going to beat Bama between our vaunted victory over the mighty razorbacks and L.S.U.?” It’s amazing those people actually do what they do for a living. This dawg fan will be pulling for the Tide this weekend.

The odds are definitely stacked against Auburn this weekend. LSU should be angry and fired up. Plus, this series tends to favor the home team. But, we won’t know until they tee it up, will we?

Rich Brooks is to be congratulated on what he has done so far.

It doesn’t bother me in the least to see FSU and Miami in decline. Here’s hoping the slide continues far into the next decade.

Clemson, … Y A W N …

I knew ‘Bama would struggle this year, it was many of their fans who didn’t get that concept. Saban is not Bear, Jr. and the team is basically the same group of guys that Mike Shula fielded. Good, but not dominating.

Predictions: Auburn 27, LSU 24. Florida 38, Kentucky 35. FSU 16, Miami 7. Clemson 24, Central Michigan 12. Tennessee 31, Alabama 16. Comments: Auburn underated, LSU overrated. Kentucky most improved team in the SEC, Gators hang on for dear life. FSU and Miami - back to the toilet from which they came and good riddance. Clemson can beat a MAC team in spite Bowden. Alabama will not see the resurrection of the Bear with the likes of his exalted grand poobah Mr. Nick “the Slick” Saban.

LSU has a good football team in spite of the coaching staff. What other coaching staff would allow their best rusher, Charles Scott, to touch the ball only twice in the second half? What other coaching staff would continue to play a zone defense when the defensive linemen are doubled teamed and the Kentucky quarterback had virtually no pressure? I rest my case.

Every good team in the conference is capable of losing. Kentucky looked great against LSWho, but they sucked against SC. Georgia looked good against bama, but horrible at UT. Since beating the crap out of NMS, Auburn has looked pretty consistant…especially on D. Don’t be too surprised if they pull out a victory at Baton Rouge. I think FL beats UK. Not many SEC people talking about my gamecocks. Number 6 is nothing to sleeze at. I think that South Carolina has an AWESOME chance of winning the SEC East. They just have to get past Flordia, which we match up great against. They wont be able to throw at all against our secondary.

There is no dealt Auburn can finish LSU. I think last years game was one of the top three games in the country. It is almost smug how people refuse to give any love to Auburn or Spurrier’s South Carolina. Auburn lost to the best team in the country in overtime, got depress reading the press clippings on how bad they were and lost to Mississippi State in one of those too early for prime time games, where they had a hangover from the Bulls. LSU would be better off if Auburn had beaten Mississippi State. Having Lester back is big too. FSU and Miami got religion. As they got more honest about whom got into their schools, South Florida and Central Florida showed up to collect the booty. Miami is a safer place, but I wonder how the crime rate is climbing in Tampa.

  1. You have a “shot” at LSU via your horrific journalism (see #3). Your “shot” means as much as Auburns.

  2. How much of their success has to do with Andre Woodson? Shouldn’t he be THE front-runner for the Heisman??

  3. Garbage. How sad can YOU really be? In past articles, you ripped both Miami and Florida State. I wish I could pull up all of your past articles to prove it to the entire blog community. I bet you’re having an orgasm at their current demise. You do know these things happen in cycles, right? Miami, FSU, Colorado, UCLA, and a host of other programs will have their day again (some day). That is a part of being a true fan of college football and you’re obviously not. I’m willing to bet that your shadow’s flatulence is smarter than you. You’re horrible, horrible, horrible.

  4. You’ve got to be kidding me, right? CM might have a chance against Duke but Clemson? Horrible, horrible, horrible.

Since 2000, SEC won-loss …Auburn 45-15, LSU 44-16, Florida 43-17, UGA 41-19, Bama 28-31.The SEC is a great conference with top four programs in the country, , plus SC. I believe lower bracket of the conference will improve in years to come, what then?? Could a two SEC teams ever play for the NC, I have no idea??

I have to chime in and say it does my ole heart good to see the decline if Florida State,err..Florida State Teacher’s College, and Miami to suffer. Never bought into “Aw Shucks Bobby’s” deal, and what the football program has done to Univ.of Miami’s reputation is down right criminal. I have relatives that teach at Univ. of Miami and they are totally embarassed by the antics of the the football program. Univ. of Miami is a great school, but one would never guess by the way their football players act. All the media types need to get over their “love fest” with these programs. On the other hand, it DOES appear Randy Shannon is trying to do a respectable job with the ‘Cane’s. Good for him. As for the other 4 points, we are pretty much in agreement.

By DWG

Yes, 2 sec teams could play for the NC. It is highly unlikely though. One team would have to win the SEC and the other would have to lose once early and not make it to the SEC championship game. UT and UF flirted with it back in the 90s.

Hey Gamecock 11, You must be crazy if you think the only test you have left is Fla! Arkansas is going to beat yout at their place b/c you can’t stop the run and Spurrier can’t beat Phat Phill two years in a row. You guys will also get upset by a Clemson or Vandy along the way. You’re “cocky” now, but by the end of November, you’ll be back to your old self as a 7-5 team and headed to the Music City Bowl. By the way, Georgia will beat you next year by 3 touchdowns!

The LSU-Auburn game sums up playing in the SEC. You never really get much of a break. After playing two tough, physical games against FL and KY, LSU now gets probably the most physical team in the SEC over the last 5+ years in Auburn. This is what makes it so difficult in this conference, yet folks outside the SEC still want to discard it. Coaches that coached in the SEC and other leagues will tell you exactly that…you just don’t get any weeks off in the SEC.

I think the fact that ABC was considering whether to air Miami/FSU or Virginia/Maryland speaks volumes about the state of these programs.

The Big 10 almost had a replay of the Ohio State/Michigan game for the national championship last year. They thought along with a lot of “experts on ESPN” that it was close to criminal to let lowly Florida who lost to Auburn into the thing instead of Mich. People don’t remember all that and are back buying all this hype about Ohio State like last year didn’t even happen. I heard someone say the other night on radio that Ohio State wasn’t ready for a game with Florida, they slept walk through it or they would have won. It is the national championship, “not ready?” But yes two SEC teams could and should play for a national championship team. You have one division stronger than another and the SEC championship game doesn’t settle anything, why not. I think Auburn or LSU could have brought more than Ohio State did to the contest last year.

By FLA DAWG

October 17, 2007 6:29 PM | Link to this

Count the number of SEC team losses to other SEC teams. Few top 10 non conference teams play the SEC during the year. Meanwhile SEC teams have to play each other. Imagine Ohio State having to play Fl, Auburn, Tenn, LSU, KY, ALA, UGA and So Carolina EVERY YEAR! Does anyone (other than Ohio State Fans) really believe they would be undefeated now? The SEC Playoff has turned out to be more of a limitation to SEC teams than bragging rights. Open up the schedules and see who plays for the National Championship. Two SEC teams playing against each other is a very real possibility.

By GW

October 17, 2007 8:06 PM | Link to this

The SEC Championship does not involve polls, voting and politics. It is settled by 9 tough games. The Big 10/11 and PAC 10 will never go for that. ESPN/ABC loves Ohio State, Michigan, USC, CAL too much for them to need a championship game. Give the Big 12 and ACC credit for settling it on the field too.

  1. This is the world of the SEC for you. The chances of Auburn winning at Death Valley reflect that straneg as it sounds.

  2. Rich Brooks has done a tremendous job in Lexington. He will be a contender for National Coach of the Year with Jim Leavitt at USF and another SEC coach, Steve Spurrier at South Carolina, who he will contend with for SEC Coach of the Year.

  3. Miami and Florida State struggles show things go in cycles. Miami is starting over with Randy Shannon at the helm. Give him time. Florida State’s offense needs to improve dramatically for them to return to the high level they played in the 80’s and 90’s.

  4. The ACC as a whole except BC and Virginia Tech has struggled. Then again, CMU lost to North Dakota State.

  5. Alabama will be back soon. They will struggle now. Once Saban gets comfortable with the job, they will take off.

LSU Vs Auburn Who will win? Not sure, but all I know is that the referees from last year’s game better not show up. In my opinion the 2006 LSU vs Auburn game was the worst officiating I have ever seen since I have started watching college football. It was not only bad for LSU, but we got away with stuff that hurt Auburn. I was outraged on both sides. Hopefully this crew will be 100 % better. If it isn’t I might just jump through the tv.

The best chance Auburn had to beat LSU went out the window when LSU lost in 3 OT and a penalty at Kentucky. Now the LSU squad will quit reading the hype and get back to playing football. LSU is fighting mad and looking to take it out last weeks disappointment on somebody. Too bad for Auburn that somebody is them. LSU’s D will hit Cox over and over like last year, and the LSU O will score much more than last year with ‘06 and Kentucky on their minds. LSU 38 Auburn 3.
