Georgia Tech will beat Miami

Ouch.

Good thing I picked Illinois to knock off Wisconsin or a very bad week would have turned into a disaster. As it was, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Florida, Clemson, and Miami all went down to give us a record of 5-5 on the week and 41-19 on the year.

What surprises will we get this week? You’ll find them here in the Fearless Friday Forecast.

1. Georgia Tech at Miami: Forrest Gump would love Georgia Tech because, like a box of chocolates, you just never know what you’re going to get. How about this: Just the word “Miami” gets the Yellow Jackets’ attention and gets their blood pumping. This team still has a pulse (I think), and will show it on Saturday. And consider this: Former Tech assistant Patrick Nix now calls the ball plays at Miami. Methinks Georgia Tech DC Jon Teunta will have a few extra wrinkles ready for him. Georgia Tech 13, Miami 10.

2. Georgia at Vanderbilt: Based on what I’m hearing and reading from the Dawg Nation, nobody in Athens knows what the heck they are doing. That includes everybody from Mark Richt down to the guy who fills up the water bottles for practice. A bad afternoon at Tennessee-and it was a real stinker-can do that. Georgia gets well at Vanderbilt, which is having trouble getting the ball to Earl Bennett, their great wide receiver. Georgia 28, Vanderbilt 13.

3. LSU at Kentucky: Here’s the debate. Does LSU have big letdown after last week’s huge win over Florida? Or, are the Tigers so good and so physical that they take care of business against an undermanned Kentucky defense? I’m going with the latter and an LSU defense that will take Kentucky QB Andre Woodson to the woodshed. LSU 31, Kentucky 17.

4. Auburn at Arkansas: It is tempting to take Arkansas because, like Tennessee’s Phillip Fulmer last week, this is a game that Houston Nutt has to have. A loss puts Arkansas at 0-3 in the SEC and Nutt’s future in Fayetteville in some serious doubt. But Auburn has figured some things out and Darren McFadden, the splendid Hog running back, is hurting. Auburn 21, Arkansas 17.

5. Tennessee at Mississippi State: The Volunteers played one of their most complete games in several years against Georgia. Now we wonder if Tennessee’s players can maintain focus as they go on the road to Starkville. The Volunteers should win because the Bulldogs are all beat up at the quarterback position and have to fight for every point. Mississippi State makes you play ugly. Tennessee 21, Miss. State 10.

6. South Carolina at North Carolina: The Head Ball Coach knows this is a recruiting game and he knows he’ll be ranked pretty high in the first BCS standings. So the Gamecocks need to be sharp on Saturday. The last time Steve Spurrier was in Kenan Stadium, as the head coach at Duke, he beat the Tar Heels 41-0. South Carolina won’t score that many points but the Gamecocks do win. South Carolina 28, North Carolina 14.

7. Alabama at Ole Miss: Alabama had to hold on for dear life to beat Houston (30-24) last week and will have to fight and claw to get out of Oxford with a win on Saturday. After six games it should be clear to the Crimson Tide Nation that every week will be a struggle for this team. But Alabama wins this week’s struggle. Alabama 20, Ole Miss 13.

8. Boston College at Notre Dame: Boston College has beaten Notre Dame four straight times by a grand total of 14 points. One game was decided by seven points and the other three by four points or less. Playing Notre Dame is a very big deal to the kids at BC, a lot of whom were passed over by the Irish in recruiting. Boston College QB Matt Ryan has a big day. Boston College 31, Notre Dame 17.

9. Central Florida at South Florida: USF has risen to No. 5 in the country and people are starting to talk about the Bulls as a BCS championship contender. UCF, coached by George O’Leary, is coming off a horrible loss on the road at East Carolina where the Knights gave it away with five turnovers. After two weeks of upsets, where is this week’s shocker? You just found it: Central Florida 24, USF 23.

10. Missouri at Oklahoma: Because Oklahoma stubbed its toe at Colorado two weeks ago, the Sooners have no margin for error if they want to stay in the BCS race. In Chase Daniel, Missouri has one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the country. The Tigers are 5-0 and were very impressive in beating Nebraska (41-6) last week. If this game were in Columbia, Mo., I might go with the upset. But the Sooners are still one of the best teams in the land. Oklahoma 24, Missouri 20.

You seem to have taken the easy vanilla picks except the last two. Seems to me the upset special would be Missouri over the Sooners. Oklahoma just isn’t as good as we’ve been led to believe and Missouri is a fast moving train. Both of us can’t be wrong huh?

Agreed on all but one: Ole Miss 31 Bama 28

USF is still 3-4 years away from being a true top 10 team. Watch out because once they they have more big games under thier belt they will be tough to deal with. I bet TommyT would love another crack at them this year.

I agree with your pick for UGA. I hope to see big improvement this week on defense. We have far superior players than Vandy and it should show on the field. Auburn had little trouble with them. However, if we play like we did last week and last year we will lose to Vandy.

Hopefully, the butt kicking we received last week at Tenn. woke up a few people, players and coaches. I hope to see a return to the old “junkyard dog” defense. I just want to see us flying around and getting after people on defense.

Tony, did you watch the Wake-FSU game? That is what good coaching (Grobe) is all about. If Chan Gailey coached Wake, they would never win a game. If Grobe coached Tech, we would be in the National Championship race. Why are you scared to point out what a LOUSY coach Gailey is? C’mon….tell it like it is. Gailey needs to be fired…TODAY!!!

I agree UGA will win but not convincingly like Auburn did last week. WM and his crappy D scheme makes the most average O look good. Win or lose I cheer the dawgs but the glory days will not return with Martinez and Eason especially. We will continue to let bottom tear teams scare us to death with some actually beating us and top tear teams will kills us more often than we sweak out a win once every 4 or 5 times. Even WM can find a way to have an ‘06 Auburn like performance once per year but he has proven he will lay an egg much more often!

I hate to say it, and I will be rooting hard for the Dawgs, but if I had to bet on what team will show up on Saturday, my money is on the same kind of team that showed up last year after smack downs by Tennessee. Until I am proven wrong, I have to go with the evidence of the last time this happened, last year. I don’t see any urgency in the program right now, and for some reason seem to still have that attitude that we can win these games on sheer talent. Why do we always have this false confidence like we have been a national power for 10 years? (My Answer: The media) Again, our coaching staff is terrible at motivating the Dawgs. Okay, so to all the people that will say “you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors”, I say this, whatever it is they are doing behind closed doors, its not working. We will have the “woe is us” attitude, no fire, and we will get beat. And if this happens, I sure hope that some of you folks out there that still will not recognize that we have a coaching problem, admit it.

UGA rolls over Vandy by at least 15. MSU squeaks past UT as UT will still be on a high after the game last week (similar to BAMA against UGA). BAMA beats Ole Miss by at least 10. LSU will destroy Kentucky. S. Carolina beats UNC. Ark pulls another one out against the Alabama Cow College with Ark backs rushing for 250 plus. BC put a beat down on ND - At least 20 points. Tech beats Miami - the Canes are just plain terrible. Missou upsets OU. If you guys disagree…oh well. All out our thoughts on here are completely irrelevent!

Mr. Joe Colvin, I respectfully disagree. Chan has had an eternity in “College Football Coaching Terms” to build a program, but consistently underachieves. Did UGA allow Ray Goof and Jim Dumber to stick around after 6 consecutive mediocre seasons, NO! They expect more and they get more in return.

I’m sick of losing to UVA on the road, occasional losses to bad teams from the state of North Carolina, and anywhere and anytime we play UGA. Gailey’s beaten Auburn, Miami, ND, Clemson, Va Tech, Vandy, and Syracuse. On the other hand he’s lost to Duke, UNC, NC ST, Wake, UVA each time on the road, Maryland, Fresno ST, WVU, Utah, FSU, and UGA six straight times. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!

Not one single Carolina team during the last 6 seasons had equal or better talent than Gailey. Fresno and Utah play in a mid-major conference, WVU had no defense. I can only justify on paper the losses to Maryland, FSU, and 3 or 4 of the losses to UGA, not 6. And what in the hell makes playing at UVA so difficult. I’ve been there 3 times, and the place is like Harvard. Its table clothes, flowers and wine sipping. No noise, no enthusiasm, and the worst or most pathetic fight song in the country. Simply put, Gailey does not understand how to prepare kids to play on a weekly basis, particularly when the team is coming off a quality win.

I’m not on the Jim Grobe bandwagon because one good year amid several poor ones does not make a coach or a program, but there are young fiery coaches that would do well at Tech with such an abundant of talent and speed. Additionally, anyone could recruit better QB’s than Ball, Suggs, Bennett, and the rest of the pathetic back-ups we’ve had. Bennett has played worse than every single BCS QB in the country through 6 games. But like Ball, he continues to play because there is nothing on the sidelines even at the poor level of Bennett. In nearly seven years, Gailey QB’s are completing less than 50% of their passes. One week Tenuta holds the opposition to just over 200 total yards, and the next week he gets torched for 550. As far as I’m concerned, he’s every bit as inconsistent as Gailey.

Truth is, Tech is not bad, in fact they are slightly above average, but there is no excuse for being 3-3 this year. Last year showed a slight progression, but this year has regressed back to the previous 5 seasons and that cannot happen, but it is, and it must be dealt with at the top. Getting rid of the pessimist, Dave Braine was a start, but Gailey and Hewitt for that matter need to go elsewhere or retire from coaching.

Tech goes 6-6, or 7-5 at best this year, and so goes another mediocre year under Gailey. To do it, he’ll need to pull one upset and he will, but don’t be surprised if Tech losses to UNC or Duke.

Dawgs should win easy in Nashberg, LSU will kill Ky (remember they beat this same team 49-0 last year) Tenn has way too much speed for the Maroons and Auburn drills Arkansas. Ole Mess loses as usual. North Carolina might just upset the Ole Ball Coach. Stafford will throw for 225 against Dores and Dawgs should have 3-5 picks. Have a nice day!

In Friday’s paper the GT quiz about the series with Miami, your quiz incorrectly says that the new stadium is in ft lauderdale. That is incorrect as ft. lauderdale is in Broward County and Pro-player is in Dade county. THe actual city in which the stadium is located is Lake Lucerne known to many as Miami Springs, but Ft Lauderdale is the next county and a good 20 miles away.

But then again, who would’ve picked Stanford to beat USC?? 4) AU beats ARK 5) TENN beats Miss St. 6) SC over NC 7) ALA over Ole Miss 8) BC over ND 9) No Tony, S.Fla wins vs. Cen. To Joe Colvin and Buzz22:

“M” has as much right to his opinion as either of you. Personally, I agree with him. I’ve believed that Gailey was the wrong coach for Tech since his first season, and six years later it’s still the same old, same old.

People who buy season tickets and donate money to the GTAA have a right to complain about poor coaching. I do both and I’m complaining. If you don’t like when I say that Chan Gailey should have been fired long ago, too bad.

Fortunately, the difference between the AJC blog and cesspools like “The Hive” is that people critical of Chan Gailey’s obvious incompetence don’t get censored or banned outright. If the two of you want to go to a board where the only permitted opinion is “Chan Gailey is a good coach and anyone who criticizes him is not a true Tech fan.” then by all means head to www.gojackets.com. All you gloom and doom Dawg fans are just a bunch of bandwagoners. Do you think such a young and inexperienced team will be perfect every week? We’re going through growing pains. Next year when we are really good you guys will be thumping your chests and bragging and saying what a great quarterback Stafford is and how great Coach Richt is. You guys are not true Dawg fans. You love ‘em only when they win. Well I love ‘em win or lose. They are MY team 12-0 or 1-11 (gotta beat Tech). We played a mistake filled game last year against Vandy and lost by a couple of points. Disappointing? Yes, but I don’t give an a*’s rat what you guys think. MY Dawgs win by two TDs.

UGA barely beats Vandy, and I don’t think anyone in Athens knows what they are doing, either….Especially the water girl. GT loses another ACC game to the “U”….GT, please fire Gailey and take Willie Martinez away from us so that we can hire someone who knows how to operate a real defense.

I like our chances to win now that B. Miller is out of action. He has got to be the biggest bust for UGA since Jasper (i didn’t fumble)Sanks.

Georgia is mediocre. Vandy is hungry. Vandy wins 21 to 20.

GT is still sleeping by halftime and give it a go in the second half. But as usual, Chan coaches them to tie, so they’ll lose 28 - 26 w/ Tech drivnig and then 4 running plays to kick a 49 yd FG.

LSU beats Kentucky like the energizer bunny.

Bama bounces back against Miss.

Arkansas wins….don’t know why

And BC loses to ND on a freak play. Actually, Wiess uses his old boss’ trick of taping the plays and cheating.

Duke beats VT b/c VT will be down from mauling Clemson and Duke is REAL close to becoming a team that can compete and be slightly dangerous. In Durham, this team wins 17 - 13.

Hey man, make fun of my picks or place your bets. Either way, its my opinion. Good luck to your respective teams…..

Everyone is entitled to their opinion and just because a blogger points out the obvious which is Martinez & Eason suck based on their performance over the past few years it does not mean we are bandwagon fans. I too will support and NEVER boo the kids on the field win or lose. I will continue to send my money win or lose. I will also continue to advocate that very highly paid coaches are held accountable for having very crappy performance over SEVERAL YEARS. The coaches are paid a handsome salary to coach up men and get some of them ready to play on Sunday. When the coaches fail to do it like Martinez & Eason have they should be fired just like a VP of sales would be fired for missing their sales targets several years in a row. Thus, we have every right to VENT and it has nothing to do with being a bandwagon fan! If you want to SUPPORT something/someone support the kids who are being robbed of millions of dollars because WM & Eason does not make them better!

For the last time will you people get a grip on the “WE ARE YOUNG AND WILL BE GREAT NEXT YEAR”! Almost every top tear SEC team is younger than UGA and our schudule next year is a nightmare…I will support/cheer/donate regardless but it will not get better with this group of assitants!

Mississippi State beats Tennessee. I hate betting on poor coaching but Fulmer is even poorer and the way he was gloating after the Georgia game tells me he won’t be ready. I am thinking Mississippi beats Alabama too The rest I agree with and really like you stepping out with Central Florida, pressure too much for South Florida and O’L knows how to turn it up.

Yea, it seems that Vandy has the same UGA joystick that Florida has. This will be another in a streak of Vandy wins over the Dawgs.

Well it’s only the first quarter BUT im convinced D-Jay Jone’s is the worst tackling safety in college football, what a Pu$$y. Put Morgan Burnett in the game for crying out loud… pathetic tackling, and it’s not the first game.

GT win? LOL. They can’t even stop a fake punt on 4th and 12. This team is pathetic and it’s time for Gailey to go. How many games now are we down in the first quarter. It’ll probably be 21-7 again at halftime. And the 7 for gt will be from some miami mistake. Way to go last week with running the ball 4 straight times and not going for the kill. That is what separates tech from good programs. Crap coaching moves. Aw schucks. We only lost by 2. And to run on a 2 pt conversion? So tired of tech’s anemic offense and over hyped defense. they’ll be lucky to get to a bowl this year. they shouldn’t even bother going if they get to 6 wins as they’ll get blown out again to some wac team. chan please do the program a favor and quit as season’s end. you stink. and how about doing some recruiting in uh georgia. 8th ranked state in terms of population and only 2 div 1 schools in this state and we can’t get any top players? even tennessee, alabama, nc, and mississippi have more div 1 programs with a far less talent pool. to not be able to recruit this state all falls on the pathetic coaching staff. the oleary days are missed. gailey is taking this program back to the bill lewis days. thanks chan. you stink. quit!!!!!!!!

Are you on crack? Carolina finally beats the Dawgs this year and your now talking sh1t? We have been kicking your a$$ for years. And have you somehow forgotten about Georgia’s 2 SEC Championships the past few years? What do you have? Yeah, NOTHING. Who have you beaten this year that is GOOD? NOBODY! The Dawgs are down this year, but until you guys win something of significance, shut the fvck up already.

Nice first half tech. Even the announcers are laughing and questioning chan’s moves. gaawd is he just an awful coach. he has no clue. if gt was a stock, i would sell it 6 ways to sunday. then i’d short the pos. this sums it all up.

Learn to understand the difference between a joke and serious comments, dawgies!

UGA will beat Vandy by at least 40 points. If they don’t you should trade in your rebel flags!

Miami will beat GT by 1 point. I still want Matt Stafford to transfer to Tech!

Good call on the Tech-Miami game, Tony. 5 “yawns” on the boring scale, but it was a win (forry bobolink…or is it missing link?). I’m getting awfully tired of seeing Taylor Bennett throw the ball into the ground 5 yards in front of a wide-open receiver.
