LSU solid No. 1, but who’s No. 2?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Two weeks ago seven out of the top 13 lost. Last weekend four of the top 10 bit the dust. Where does that leave us in the BCS race? Here’s my new top five.
1. LSU (6-0): We’ve had the Tigers up here for a while but now the rest of the country is on board. After beating Florida last Saturday night, it’s hard to figure out where LSU might lose. Auburn comes to Baton Rouge on Oct. 20 and that could be interesting. LSU could play Florida again in the SEC championship game and that would be REALLY interesting.
2. California (5-0): I was tempted to put Ohio State here because, as you know, there is a strong East coast bias among college football writers. At least that’s what my friends on the West coast say. The Bears get points for going on the road to beat Oregon, which I think is a pretty good team. California should be 7-0 when it goes to Arizona State on Oct. 27.
3. Ohio State (5-0): The Buckeyes are playing really good defense, holding Purdue (which was averaging over 45 points per game) to only seven points last Saturday. An Oct. 27 trip to Penn State might be a challenge but the Buckeyes should be 11-0 when they go to Michigan on Nov. 17.
4. Boston College (6-0): The Eagles have been flying under the radar for a while because they haven’t played any high profile games. That is about to change because Saturday they go to Notre Dame, which is a big time game even when the Irish are bad (like they are now), and on Oct. 25 comes a trip to Virginia Tech. If BC is 8-0 after going to Blacksburg, we’re going to have take a serious look at Coach Jags and the Eagles.
5. Oklahoma (5-1): Sorry, South Florida fans. But I still think the Sooners are one of the best five teams in the country. But I am anxious to see how Oklahoma plays Saturday against Missouri, which may be better than a lot of us think. The Sooners always invest a lot into the Texas game. They had better be ready against Mizzou.
Others to watch:
South Carolina (5-1): With road games at Tennessee and Arkansas and a home game with Florida, it’s going to be hard for the Head Ball Coach to go 11-1. But if he did, South Carolina would get a rematch with LSU in Atlanta. Wouldn’t that be fun?
South Florida (5-0): The Bulls play Central Florida on Saturday and then have a short week before a Thursday night trip to Rutgers. Watch out for the Scarlet Knights.
Southern Cal (4-1): There is no explanation for the loss to Stanford. None. Still, this team is loaded and if a one-loss team gets to the big name, the Trojans could be it.
Virginia Tech (5-1): Is it just me or has Frank Beamer done a good job re-inventing his team since a 48-7 loss at LSU? The Hokies just dominated Clemson on the road.

got to give Cal their due at #2—big upset in South Bend this weekend—the big 2 (big ten) is now the big one-don’t see anyone beating the OSU-another a#$ whipping in the BCS by either oklahoma, LSU, USC etc….

Why not just go ahead and hand it to LSWHO. You seem to have decided that they’ll be in the title game. I thought they looked very vulnerable against Florida. I wouldn’t be too surprised by an Auburn victory in Baton Rouge. And I’m not certain that Kentucky will just roll over and play dead. Leslie Miles and company are not invinceable.

USF is the one team that doesn’t belong on that list. Thank God voters started getting it right by moving one-loss OU ahead of the Bulls. As a Gator, I’m so sick of hearing about ‘em. http://209.200.252.69/~gnnsite2/index.php?option=com_myblog&show=It-s-official-I-hate-USF.html&Itemid=

Eric, Are you saying you think ND will beat USC this weekend? I will admit anything is possible, however that would be huge. We have seen some strange things this season, yet I really doubt that will happen. Or maybe I simply hope that will not happen since I despise ND!
Hey Tony: No Notre Dame? I figured they would be in the top five now. Look out, they will get a BCS birth by the end of the season! (just kidding folks)

Why give Big 10 props? They are soooo weak. No way Ohio State should be there.
Cal and Boston College are in the same boat. They need to beat someone top ranked. I would put them both #2 and #3 interchangeably.
South Florida should be #4.
My #5 team would be VA Tech. The only loss is to #1 LSU, and have played great ball since then (whipping #13 Clemson at Clemson).

I think Ohio State is up there by default. Outside of Washington (who is around .500) they haven’t really played anyone yet. I’m a little hesitant about any of the Big 11 teams-they all look so slow on TV.
BTW bucko, at least USF beat Auburn at Auburn. I think they should be #5 instead of Oklahoma. OK beat an overrated Texas team and got exposed by Colorado the week before. Yes they beat Miami but so did UNC.

Bucko,
I am an SEC fan and season ticket holder. Either you know nothing about football or you have not seen USF play or both. The article you link to is a joke. South Florida has one of the top defenses in the country. USF would have a much better regard than 7-5. They could compete for the east with the defense they have and yes they could beat your beloved gators. Saying that they could not beat Florida if they played 10 times is so out of the realm of reality I can’t believe anyone would actually believe that. Since you don’t seem to know much about football which is totally understable. I am sure it takes all of your free time to decide which pair of cut off jeans go with which wife beater T-shirt. Don’t worry though mullets will be back in style any day now. HERES MY TIP. DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS NOT QB’S WHO RUN 27 TIMES A GAME. I hope this helps.

Hey bucko - The last thing USF’s Defense? We scored on LSU’s. Is your better? No. At a neutral site, UF 35 USF 12 This year. Next year, UF 49 USF 10. If we played in the Bucs, I mean Bulls stadium, it would he at least 1/2 gator fans. Look, you have a really good team. Be proud but don’t think you are anywhere close to UF as a team or program.

Well, it’s good to see that everyone on this blog has become an expert pigskin prognosticator once again.
The defending National Champion Gators looked unstoppable — until they played Ole Miss. Now they are “young”.
Tennessee was a dog — until they pounded the Dawgs. Now Georgia is “young”.
Florida’s weakness, previously exposed in Oxford, was confirmed when the hapless Auburn Tigers (also “young”) proved that the Gators weren’t the best football team in Florida. Now Auburn fans are dreaming of a trip to the Big Easy. Meanwhile, Florida has exposed a chink in the Bayou Bengal’s armor.
There is plenty of football yet to be played. All of the teams are “young”. They are college kids, they’re supposed to be young. I hope that Bama is ready for the Rebels this weekend. And yet I don’t dread the LSU game any more than Ole Miss. We could win or lose either game. I give up on predicting the outcomes and I pity those who attempt to profit from betting on college football this year.
You can fire all of the coaches you want — parity in college football will not go away. There are simply too many quality high school football programs turning out too many quality players.
I don’t particularly like this situation. The University of Alabama has been a football dynasty in the past, and I would like to see them become a dynasty again in the future. The program has never been in a better position to make that happen. But this is not your father’s college football landscape. The number 1 team in the nation is only a smidgen better than the number 25 team.
I will make one prediction. There will be more upsets before this season ends. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a BCS championship controversy surrounding which two 2-loss teams should be paired up in New Orleans come January.

TrueCrimson: well put (for the most part). I’ve never bought into the “young” argument, as it doesn’t make sense in college football. It’s not okay to write off a season as rebuilding; doing so cheats the seniors that year. Every year should stand on its own.
Most knowledgeable Auburn fans know we have a long way to go this season. We don’t dread or prepare for LSU (or ‘Bama) any more than any other game this season. Our only question is which version of our team will show up on a given Saturday.
In my opinion, I don’t see Alabama becoming the football dynasty it once was and that’s a good thing. Parity makes for a much more entertaining season, as long as you aren’t betting the family homestead on the outcome.

The only reason that this season seems so crazy is because the teams that are the ‘darlings’ are not good.
No one should rank any teams until at least half way through the season. Rankings up until that point are based on nothing more than a beauty contest.
The ‘darlings’ such as Notre Dame, Michigan, etc. won’t be in the top 25 unless they earn it - like everyone else.
And, IMHO there should be some way to penalize any coach that ranks teams biased towards their own conference. For example, if a PAC10 coach ranks all PAC10 teams in top 25 when no one else does, that coach should get some penalty. After all, he is screwing up and screwing with the national rankings.

No East Coast bias? Everybody West of the Mississippi has Oregon in their top 10. You have no mention of them. You think on a neutral field they couldn’t clobber BC? Ask Michigan and they beat them up at the Big House! You didn’t mention CAL’s win over UT and what did UT do to the Dawgs on Saturday. Get your head out of the sand!

VaTech/GaTech wins over Clemson are somewhat deceiving. Tigers just aren’t all that good - but who is. Parity is here. It’s all about how you match up strengths and weaknesses week to week. Very few teams anymore are going to be able to match up and overpower 12-14 times a year. I look for 2 one-loss teams at best for the BCS.

Virginia Tech has to be one of the most overrated programs in college football. What is their recent record OOC against other BCS teams? I have to believe it is not good. Yeah, I know they play some tough OOC games, but it would help if they actually won some of those games every now and then. I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw VT popping up in preseason top 10’s after it blew an 18 point lead to Georgia in its bowl game. Now, only a month removed from a 41 point loss to LSU, they are back in the discussion of top 10 teams. Why? Are Ohio, William & Mary, and Duke really that good? VT=OVERRATED.

If you think VaTech should be in the top ten then you got to put South Carolina there too. The Cocks only loss is a MUCH more respectable lose to LSU than VaTech’s.
I would also argue South Carolina has much higher quality wins than VT….wins over a previously ranked UGA and then #8UK.

It is not east coast as much as northeast bias. It sure doesn’t take long to overcome the hang over and lessons learned last year. Ohio State was anointed national champion mid way through the season. They just moved in and took over the place and anyone who disagreed was a communist. Well I disagreed then and I disagree now for one simple reason. They don’t play football above the Mason Dixon line. It is like Betty Davis at 100 and too much makeup. Old Betty looks pretty good when next to other 100 year old women, it is when the real thing shows up like Florida did last year that all the face lifts in the world can’t help

Gator Fans, when it comes to your criticism of USF, me thinketh thou doth protest too much. USF went to Auburn and won despite poor special teams play, and Auburn went into your house and beat you (for the second year in a row), so it’s not too much of a stretch to say that Florida would have their hands full with USF, if they would even be favored. Would Florida beat USF if they played this year? Most likely. Would it be a given? Not by a long shot. Just ask Auburn and West Va.

Before Alabama hired Nick Saban they made an offer to USF coach Jim Levitt. Bama recognized a good thing in Leavitt, but Leavitt recognized a better thing in USF. The Bulls are for real. Ask West Virginia. Ask Louisville. Ask UNC, who just beat Miami. Ask Auburn, who beat Florida.
Didn’t Boise beat Oklahoma last year? Didn’t App State beat Michigan? Didn’t Stanford beat USC? Then get over it and recognize that USF is legit.

LSU vs. USC
Cal vs. USF
Ohio St. vs South Carolina
BC vs. Oklahoma

I was responding to Bucko’s idiotic post gatorguy. I said I am an SEC Season Ticket holder. I am not a South Florida fan. I have watched them and have seen along with anyone who knows anything about football that they have one of the best defenses in the country. I will grant you that they are probably the second best defense behind LSU but USF’s defense is without a doubt better than Florida’s. Take the blinders off and watch them for a few games. Yes they do play some bad teams but they also play some good teams. They shut down West Virginia in case you were getting a perm during the game and missed it.

USF is a coming program that when they do I believe their program will be a top 10 type. As it should be, their fans are hyped, excited and proud of the Bulls and they should be. They aren’t there yet. I think the Va. Tech is the USC of the East coast. Year in and out they are overated and they’ll fall apart at seasons end.

This year’s rankings have been so upside down because the normal top 20 teams have had some unexpected losses. This has opened the door for a lot of unusual residence in the top 20 that end up getting exposed as pretenders who have not played anyone yet. Case in point is Louisville, UK, and (I hate to say it) Georgia. I still don’t see how we are ranked AHEAD of Tennessee. Anyway, I think that USF, South Carolina and maybe Boston College are ranked higher than they should be. Still, someone has to beat them… The gamecocks still have to play TN and Fl, and they will end up with at least 3 SEC losses. This has all made for a fun college season, but come bowl time it will be a HUGE mess! Go Dawgs - we will have a good second half and be well positioned for ‘08.

To those out there wanting to hate on USF. Don’t worry if they lose to one team this year, their ranking will plummet and everyone will say they were overrated. Unless they lose to Syracuse the team they lose to will be a lot better than the sorry Stanford team that beat USC and no one seemed to say that USC was way overrated.
To Florida Gator fans out there you really might want to stop whining. You are still the defending champions in college football and basketball it isn’t like you haven’t had a great run. Get over yourselves and respect another successful program in your state. Unless USF runs the table I am sure the voters will manage to rank you higher than USF anyway.

ERIC AND ALL DOUBTERS….
YOU ACT AS IF LSU IS AN OVERNIGHT SUCCESS STORY AND WE ALL KNOW LSU NOT ONLY DOES VERY WELL AT FOOTBALL EVERY YEAR, BUT ALSO DOES WELL IN BASEBALL, BASKETBALL, TRACK AND FIELD ETC. FLORIDA DID WELL, BUT HAD TO PLAY AN AWESOME GAME WITH ALMOST NO PENALTIES, WHICH IS A BIG IMPROVEMENT FOR THEM…BUT ONE GREAT QUARTERBACK IS NOT ENOUGH TO WIN BIG GAMES…IT TAKES DEPTH IN MANY POSITIONS. THE ONLY REASON LSU DIDN’T DOMINATE AND BLOW OUT FLORIDA IS BECAUSE THEY HAD QUITE A FEW PENALTIES, QUITE A FEW DROPPED PASSES BY THE 2ND AND THIRD RECEIVER, EARLY DAUCET WAS OUT OF THE GAME AND FLORIDA IS A GOOD TEAM. EVEN THROUGH ALL THESE PROBLEMS AND FLORIDA PLAYING BASICALLY A PENALTY FREE GAME, LSU STILL CAME BACK AND DOMINATED THE 2ND HALF. I AM SURE LSU WILL FIX THESE PROBLEMS AND BY THE END OF THE SEASON WILL BE UNSTOPPABLE. LSU IS TRULY THE BEST TEAM IN THE NATION AND KENTUCKY, AUBURN,ALABAMA, AND ARKANSAS, THREE OF WHICH PLAYING AT DEATH VALLEY, DON’T HAVE A CHANCE.
LSU WILL GO 12-0….GEAUX TIGERS!!!

True Crimson, Auburn post on this blog or others have NEVER said”Auburn to the Big Easy”. Bama fans fill the radio airways in Birmingham after the Western Carolin win, “Alabama 2007, national Champs”. As a Auburn alumnus and fan, we will not come close to Big Easy, its never a issue or thought. Auburn wants to improve every game with a inexperience starting 22. Ed, Buck, GatorGuy et al——I’m a life-long Gator sports fan and no one is prouder than I am proud to hold three university degrees from that small college in Gainesville. I was a Gator fan when the Gators were 1-10 in 1979, and I was a Gator fan when they were the 12-1 BCS national champions in 1996. Win, lose or draw, my primary loyalty will always be to my alma mater … .
That having been said, college football has finally come of age in the State of Florida. It’s not just about Florida, Florida State and Miami anymore. South Florida, Central Florida, Florida Atlantic and even Florida International have all fielded teams in the last 10 years, and that takes nothing away from the traditional Big Three. There is more than enough high school talent to go around, and even then there remains talent for other SEC schools like South Carolina and Auburn to cherry-pick. Keep in mind that the population of Florida is more than twice that of Georgia, more than three times that of Louisiana, and more than four times that of Alabama, and the state’s high school recruiting base is mentioned in the same breath with Texas, California and western Pennsylvania/Ohio.
So, I say good for South Florida. Coach Leavitt is among the best, and he and the Bull’s program are “overnight” success stories that have been 11 years in the making. But, I will gently remind all, that the Gators have won two BCS championships in the last 12 years, and played for a third. So, enjoy your success, but be careful what you wish for——you may still have to play the Gators in a bowl game.

Aguably USF deserves the No. 1 ranking but that would really freak out you guys who believe that your ranking is an entitlement(see ND. here’s why. USF beat Auburn at home. Auburn beat Florida at home. UF would have beaten LSU at home but for a perfect 4th qtr by LSU(see 4th and everything). Simple answer USF is the No. 1 team in the country. Atlanta Gator, nice post and true words were never blog. Auburn relies on Florida high schools since CMR has got a strong hold on Atlanta area. Auburn sign only 4 players last year from GA compared to 10 from Florida. Most of these are playing as true freshman including Wes Byrum and Pat Sims,Ft Lauderdale. This years commitments are 7 out 0f 17 from Florida. Auburn has a pipeline from Dillard HS in Miami. I think 3 All Americans at Auburn came from Dillard.. Parity is good

i was blasted on one of these blogs earlier this year for mentioning parity.i am glad to see that i don’t stand alone in my opinions.the 85 scholarship rule, the vast pool of high quality players coming out of high school, and early entry into the nfl are resposable for this.many kids will not sit on the bench and wait there turn to play anywhere.rather than sit at uf,fsu or miami, just for example, they will go to south fl,or ucf,or out of state.also, the coaching is strong at so many schools, the sec alone has 5 nc coaches, and richt and tubby ain’t bad.so the”tune up”games are soon to be a thing of the past.a coach may have a higher ranking and better athletes, but he had better not be overconfident, chances are the team he is playing will have some big, fast guys, and will be well coached.tony, your rankings look about right to me,but we WILL see more upsets, makes me glad i am not a bookie.

You still see trends. Spurrier can turn a program around, Auburn is consistently good; LSU and Florida are in there. The old guard is inconsistent. Fulmer will beat Georgia but he may lose to Vanderbilt, Gailey has this inconsistent style by trying to be consistent, conservative and boring, predictable. Even Richt with all his talent has gotten inconsistent, by being predictable. Watching the LSU/Florida game the other night and watching LSU go for it on fourth down after watching the behind the back pass in the South Carolina game a few weeks ago, tells me a lot. These winning coaches will take chances throwing into close coverage, do things against the book. Maryland threw two touchdown passes to receivers that were closely covered again Tech, Saturday. This is not the way Bear would have done it, but Bear had all the cards. He had more good players on his bench than most programs had on the field. He would have been stupid to take a chance he was the bully in control. Now the odds are evened out and doing the unpredictable pays higher dividends.

After watching everyone play this year, the two best teams in the country played last weekend. UF and LSU would be favored in any game they play right now. OSU and the big ten are weak, ACC is down. South Florida has a great team and I like the big east but they still wouldn’t be favored in a game against the gators or lsu. Oklahoma would give either team a good game. Not sure how TB can have VT on this list. My dawgs learned last weekend not to judge the strength of a team by how may losses they have.

How can you “almost” put OSU over Cal?
-Cal has 2 quality wins over a good Oregon team and a decent Tennessee team. -OSU has 1 “quality” win over a vastly overrated Purdue.
-Cal’s 2 quality opponents have 1) dominated Michigan AT Ann Arbor, 2) demolished highly-ranked Georgia -OSU’s 1 quality opponent beat 5-0 Purdue, who can only be complimented for their excellent scheduling. Before OSU, Purdue’s 5 previous opponents are a combined 10-20. NONE of them are even over .500; OF COURSE they were 5-0!
OSU didn’t shut down an impressive team last week. They shut down a mediocre team that managed to look impressive against sub-par competition.
At least Cal’s quality opponents have actually done something. Unless you think Michigan and Georgia is the same thing as Eastern Illinois and Central Michigan (the only 2 Purdue opponents even at .500)

I think somewhere in this blog, some one said Les Miles made a bunch of dumb decisions. I couldn’t disagree more. He was telling his team and the LSU faithful that he isn’t going to settle for anything less than a national championship. And guess what? His team responded. That was one of the best games I’ve watched in quite a while. Hats off to both teams—-to LSU for a gutcheck win and to Florida for an outstanding effort. Only negative moments were Tebow’s immature taunting of the crowd and the crowd’s even more immature response.

Tennessee beats a sophomore quarterback and a freshman line—WOW. That’s something for the Orange to be excited about. Here’s to hoping Fulmer stays as long as he wants…

i am a lifelong gator fan and a usf alum. i think it would be cool if they could settle it ON THE FIELD in a bowl game, maybe even a BCS game if everything works out.

WOW! What a difference 6 weeks makes! Back then, SC fans were “delusional”…Now we’ve got all of you speculating on whether we should be ranked 7th or 8th in the country and if we can win the East.

TrueCrimson - I sure am happy to hear a Tider admit that even if you could resurrect Bear Bryant, college football has changed greatly and dynasties are a very long shot for any team. High school programs are producing more game ready players than in the 70’s. Schools now have scholarship limitations and recruiting violations are taken seriously - in the Bear’s era it was almost anything goes - he was able to stockpile talent. What this leads to is what you stated - parity. USF is a great example of a team that came out of nowhere, beat Auburn in Auburn (wish we had another shot at them) and WVU as well. This season and all its ups and downs (particularly as an AU fan) reminds me why I love college football.
