Georgia’s young and they play young

Five things we learned over the weekend:

1. Georgia is a young team and it plays like a young team: Young teams with talent always think they are better than they really are. Georgia is the perfect example. When the Bulldogs beat Oklahoma State in the opener, suddenly all of the problems that existed in the preseason were solved-at least in some minds. So Georgia was not quite ready to play a tough, well-coached team like South Carolina. Beating Alabama on the road and Ole Miss at home did not make Georgia a contender in the SEC East. The Bulldogs were not ready to match the intensity and the toughness of a Tennessee team that didn’t just want to win, they HAD to win. There are no short cuts in the SEC. Georgia’s young players are learning that the hard way.

2. It’s time to give Les Miles some love: In some circles the LSU coach has gotten absolutely no credit for the job he has done in Baton Rouge. Anybody could have done, it, goes the logic, with the players that Nick Saban’s staff recruited. Saturday night Miles put his stamp on the program for good with LSU’s come back win over Florida. He took some risks that most coaches would not take in a big-time game and, yes, he got a little lucky. It’s time to recognize that this guy can coach a little bit.

3. We may see Florida-LSU again: The Gators have gotten their hearts broken two weeks in a row but it says something when a team that young can go into an environment like the one I saw Saturday night and play well enough to win. This team is good enough to win the rest of its games and, with a little help, get back to the SEC championship game. Could they beat LSU in a rematch on a neutral field? You bet they could.

4. Something ain’t right at Georgia Tech: When you run for 175 and pass for 309 with no interceptions, you’re not supposed to get beat. We’ve been calling out Taylor Bennett to play better. Well, he played better. Once again RB Tashard Choice gives you everything he’s got. Saturday’s game with Maryland should have never come down to one series of downs and one kick. There are too many mistakes being made on both sides of the ball and the defense is giving up too many big plays. It’s too easy to blame coaching as the source of the problem. Some seniors on this team need to step up.

5. South Carolina can win the SEC East: The Gamecocks will have to win two tough games on the road (Tennessee, Arkansas) and beat Florida at home (on Nov. 10) to do it. But Steve Spurrier’s team has proven to be pretty resourceful. The defense is very good, even with the loss of LB Jasper Brinkley. And Spurrier obviously has a lot more confidence in his new quarterback, redshirt freshman Chris Smelley. As long as the defense keeps playing well, Spurrier will find a way to manufacture enough points to win. If the Gamecocks can get past Vanderbilt on Oct. 20, their trip to Tennessee on Oct. 27 will be huge.

1) Yes, Georgia is young, but so is Florida & about 10-15 other teams in the top 25. UGA has problems. REAL problems. 2) Les Miles made a believer out of me. 3) Yes, Flordia played well, butr come on Tony, lets not get into the ‘would’ve, could’ve should’ve. They lost. If they play again my money’s on LSU. 4) GaTech. ‘Nough said. 5) South Carolina ‘can’ win the East. South Carolina won’t win the East. You can only coach-up an average team so much.

Tony, I was one of those folks early in the season that was saying my Dawgs are not ready for the top 25 rankings. 8 Wins again this year will be difficult. I am always hopeful, but unlike most fans out here I like to temper with realism.

This year the reality is that the team has no senior leadership, it has no fire, it is young, has difficulty blocking, and is getting man-handled up the middle.

But I am optimistic. I hate the ole “wait till next year” sayings. But I think things could really be better next year. Man I hope so.

And I have a question for you. I am one of those folks that wonders if Coach Richt has any fire. However, after the Alabama game there were a couple of shots of him in the dressing room jumping up and down. It was a side of him only the team sees. Is there more to this? Does he have two different personas? One for team and one for field? Thanks

If the Vols play like the rest of their games this season like they did Saturday against UGA, they, not Florida, will be in the SEC championship game. Where was that defense earlier in the year? Guess better late than never…

Tony, You and everyone else seem to have LSU in the SEC championship game as a given fact. On Saturday, I saw LSU struggle with Florida, get a few lucky breaks and come from behind (at home) to win.

In the next 4 weeks LSU still has to get past KY, AU and ‘Bama. KY is fighting for a trip to ATL. Auburn vs. LSU is always strange and Auburn has been taking on the role of spoiler lately. And the coach at ‘Bama just might have a few issues playing his old team.

Given the way this season has played out so far, LSU fans shouldn’t be booking Atlanta hotel rooms just yet…

The problem at Tech is that Gailey coaches scared. I like Gailey and I don’t think he should turn into Les Miles, who made one bonehead decision after another (but got away with it), but he had MD on the run, he had UGA beat the past three years, and he manages to get scared and I think that filters down to the players and they get tight and make mistakes in big spots.

In August Jeff Schulz said GA was a 12-1 BCS caliber team. Last week you picked FL, GA, and GT to win. You said of the GA game…the Vols still don’t have anybody to slow down the run. And if they commit too many players to Georgia’s running game, Matt Stafford will burn them with the play action pass. Georgia 28, Tennessee 20.

I agree that GA is a young team…we knew that coming out of spring practice. But supposed experts like you build unrealistic expectations and then act like you were right all along. Your peers are so knowledgeable; they have GA ranked ahead of TN in the polls. The standards for being a sports journalist have greatly deteriorated.

Teams seem to get their mentality from the coaching philosophy. Sit back and wait/be careful = lack of aggressiveness or go for broke even if it is a gamble = hit em’ in the mouth and don’t quit hitting. Which one is UGA, which one is LSU, FLA., AUBURN?

By ATLDawg

But why is UGA so young? At this point in Richt’s tenure we should be able to just reload without having a down year.

I’ve been saying it the past two years and every year I’m more right - Richt needs to go. His best years were with Donnan’s recruits.

How many good/great games can we count for Martinez led defenses in the past few years. I mean good physically dominating defenses in meaningful games.

2007 - none to date 2006 - Auburn 2005 - LSU

3 out of what 36+ games.

How many times has the D been embarrased in in big games

2007 - SC/UT and more to come 2006 - UT/Vandy/UK/Va Tech 2005 - UF/Auburn/W.VA

By the time this year is over we will have at least 12 poor efforts and only 3 great efforts by the D in big games (a few average performances like last year against UF/Tech). It is not an emotional reaction to a loss Saturday it is an objective 3 year scorecard that grades out to an F for Martinez - F should also mean fired for 4+ years of non-performance. The facts do not lie and if MR does not believe UGA has an issue on D then maybe the problem starts with him. How many dominate D performances has AU/UF/LSU/SC had lately? The answer…they have had more this year than UGA has in the last 3 to 4 years collectively!!!!!

Look at our schedule next year and think about how that will turn out with a WM defense!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don’t agree with Willie’s scheme - seems too soft to me, but it does produce results; usually. However, against a good QB it can be picked apart. Should’ve changed the strategy Saturday. Better not do it against UK or Woodson’s going to eat us alive.
ATLDawg, we do reload every year, but losing five linemen to injuries leaves you short. No team with three FR OL will be successful in the SEC. Surprised nobody else exposed us. Saban isn’t that good a coach, obviously. We’ll be in better shape next year. GO DAWGS!!!!

Good news for Vols fans, we’re young too. DB’s are pretty young with the exception of Hefney, WR’s are all new, all young. O-Line is pretty new, D-Line is actually one of the more experienced spots. Yes Ainge leaves this year but Crompton is quite a QB. His first game against LSU last year is evidence enough that with a full off season with the #1’s he’ll be a hell of a QB for us. UGA’s problems aren’t gonna end next year. Let the 90’s commence.

2n4years: I agree. There are a lot of young teams out there.

I was driving to the sorry arse Falcons game Sat and got to listen to the Vandy broadcast of the AU game.

Every description of AU players started with either

true freshman, freshman, or sophomore so and so

Don’t worry SEC fans about learning the names of any of AUs players.

You’ll have 2 or 3 more yrs to learn them all.

Pat, You are absolutely correct. My point is that the performance Saturday is the norm and NOT the exception. The players are accountable and often are benched for performance. MR has no creditability if he does not also hold his coaches accountable especially since they are getting paid big bucks! If you want to be everyones friend and accept 4+ years of poor performance and call it loyalty go coach at NW Ark State for blind and make $75k/yr. If you want to get paid $1MM+ plus as a head coach or $200k+ as a coordinator then you better deliver results. Loyalty in Div.I ball is giving a coach a couple of years to show improvement. Ignoring declining performance over 3+ years is completely unacceptable! If you are going to accept the big pay accept the responsibility that goes with it. Deliver a competitive product consistently or someone else will.

Nobody can set up for a 52 yard field goal better than GT!!!!

Who wouldn’t start playing for the field goal with 2 minutes left, 1st down on the 25? I thought it was good strategy to get that holding call to give Bell an additional 10 yards to work with. It’s just hard to believe that a kicker who has never had a game winning field goal, would miss his first opportunity from 42, I mean 52 yards out.

Stupid me, I was thinking the whole time, well lets keep doing what moved us down to the 25 yard line, maybe some play action, screens, boot legs, etc…

Maryland just got lucky, guessing Chan was going to get conservative and run the same play 4 times in a row.

You kill me. ” Georgia is a young team and plays like a young team.” Goodness, take a junior/senior laden team from Anywhere, USA, give them 2 losses after six games and we’ll say they are under-performing, or poor coaching..? Isn’t this the same UGA team that nearly held cause for a ticker tape parade after Alabama..? Anyone who says Richt should be let go is a fool. Sure, I’ll admit that the Tenn. game was not the most well-coached game in the world, that Willy Martinez needs to get the D in gear quickly, and that Bobo made some Bogus play calls, but to call for Richt’s dismissal at this point is assinine. The man’s record speaks for itself, especially on the road.

Keep the faith. It’s always hard to lose to a rival. We’re down, but not out. We’ve got a lot to look forward to (Stafford, Knowshon, age-experienced defense). Stop with this anti-Richt nonsense. I’m not blind, I can see the forest for the trees, but Richt is not the problem here.

An open letter to the Georgia Bulldogs. Suitable for bulletin board material… Dear Georgia football players and coaches, It’s time for a gut check. You have just come off one of the most devastating defeats of this young season. They are two way to go either up or in the tank. Football is a combination of skill, attitude and desire. It’s time gentleman for someone to step up and take leadership of this team. On offense, it’s time for Matthew, Kregg and Fernando to take charge, on defense Jeff, Brandon and Kelin need to take responsible. The season IS not over there are goals that still can be attained. You are not mathmematical out of the Eastern Divison race. But to win the remainder of your SEC games you must consistently play sound football for four complete quarters. Which direction will you choose? We are all behind you because we are part of the Bulldog Nation.

Richt can stay and Martinez can go. CMR is a great coach, but he is not a good game day coach. We need an Erk Russell type that can get our players fired up on game day. Van Gorder was that way, we lost a great deal of fire since his departure that is evident by our home record.

I was at the game on Saturday and the team came out completly flat. I can’t think of a positive thing to say about Saturday except for The Mighty Stanford Cardinals.

Folks,Let me tell you.Fulmer may be on the hotseat but it aint because he can’t coach.Rather it is from meadia outlets an ignorant fans that think he isn’t the handsome young guy that Urban or Richt or Carroll is.One thing though, the guy is a fierce competitor . If you ever have a chance to see him up close you can tell in his eyes, his demeanor that he has a strong will and work ethic to win. There is alot of teams that would take him if they knew he would be as loyal to their school as he is to the Vols. Besides, why the heck does Marylands coach get a free pass on the weight issue, or Charlie Weiss for that matter?

Serious question here. For some time now, I keep hearing and reading about what a great “road” record Mark Richt has. However, this statistic leaves out the annual GA-FL game.

If the game is not played in Sanford Stadium, shouldn’t it be considered a “road” game?

If it’s not counted as a “road” game and not counted as a “home” game, does it not count at all?

Just curious…

Florida played great and showed a lot of heart, but LSU was not sharp at all for most of the game and won anyway. I like LSU in a rematch.

Georgia is young for sure, but the lack of fire coming out of the tunnel really concerns me. They looked like they were attending a funeral rather than an SEC football game, and their play at the start reflected that. I’ve seen them come out of the tunnel against Florida that way in recent years, and it baffles me. If you can’t get excited about playing Tennessee in Knoxville…

What a game Saturday night in Death Valley! The best I have witnessed in at least 30 years. Not sure we want to see the Gators again in Atlanta. Tibow is a man against boy, although he is way too good to pull some of the taunting he was doing that got the student body fired up & thus the “*&^% Tibow” chant - that wasn’t exactly our shinning moment either. Hey War Eagles, the ball does bounce funny for our games, but did you ever notice that is “usually” bonces for the home team - we won the “field goal” game, ya’ll win the blocked extra point call that has never been called again & last year…….anyway, ya’ll usually win on the Plains & we do well on the Bayou. I agree MR should not be on the hot seat UNLESS he refuses to hold his assitants accountable for their poor performance over several years. No matter how you cut it the facts show that our D has been terrible to very average under WM. Our receivers have been very bad to average under Eason. Like any great coach/executive MR must review the results of his staff and hold them accountable if they are under performing. See my earlier post…the results of our D is embarrasing and our receivers are VERY average at best. No reasonable & true fan expects to win the SEC or even the East every year…that is unrealistic! We do expect to be competitive every year. I will be at every game cheering the players and sending my money even if they lose every game (not booing them like bandwagon fans do while recruits sit in the stands saying why would i play here?) because I am a true and loyal alumni & fan. I also have the right to ask that highly paid coaches earn their pay and WM & Eason clearly are not!

Shane I’m with you on that. These kids are totally spoiled by what has happened “lately” and weren’t around when the Dawgs were bad. The only problem is that the only win we could count on in those days was Florida. That sounds good, but as you remember we hardly ever played Tenn. and Tech beat us regularly. I’m not happy with the way things are going, but there are no guarantees in football these days. Even Vandy. We need some leadership both on the field and on the sidelines. We can salvage a “good” season out of this just as we did last year.

Sahne & Dawgbone please go “support” Vany/Ole Miss/Miss State or Tech! You have no idea what success looks like and no 9-4 in not a good season when it means you only beat one quality team during the regular season. I suppose you are happy or content with 6 straight losses in the SEC East and a losing record (8-11)against the key teams on our schedule. I do remember the years we were bad which is why we pay coaches top dollar today to deliver a top notch program. Even Fulmer new he had to make changes on his staff and guess who has kicked who’s butt since? The issue is not a number of losses as you point out everyone has a bad game. The issue is are you competitive consistently against teams that matter? UF lost two very competitive games the last two weeks to an average team and the best team in the country on their field. They will likely still be in Atlanta representing the East and clearly they are a good team that lost competitive close games…nothing to be ashamed of! Our D gets embarrased by quality teams…sometimes our offense bails us out see Va Tech last year…sometimes they don’t. Our D had been terrible consistently with a few glimpses of wonder when it should be the other way around. MR is a good coach and I hope he stays but he must make obvious changes to his staff…the defensive results have been terrible for several years and that is a fact! Go dawgs…Support Richt…cheer the players but please don’t let the highly paid coaches off the hook for allowing their part of the team to bring the whole program back to a middle of the pack in the SEC East.

You are all correct about our coaching. CMR needs to hold each accountable. In my opinion, we have division 2-A coaches at defensive coordinator, offensive oordinator, linebackers, and receivers. At $2M+ annually for 10 years, this needs to be addressed. (Especially for all the UGA contributors who pay through the nose just to have the opportunity to purchase season tickets.) Also, we have got to quit letting Rivals, etc. “stroke” our committments by giving them a much higher rating…ie: Brandon Miller, Prince Miller, Darius Dingleberry, Matt Stafford. Why do we continue to lose to teams with players that are 2 Stars? And, we need to quit redshirting players in positions of need…C. King, and all the defensive and offensive linemen along with linebackers. I’ve been a Mark Richt fan all along; however, I’m beginning to question his football smarts and his so called loyalty. Perhaps Joe Cox might make a difference?

Georgia is young… but so is Florida, Tennessee, & S. Carolina to name a few. UT’s young team is obviously much better than UGA’s young team. I believe Tennessee will beat Miss. St. & Alabama, S. Carolina defeat Vandy (& UNC), and Florida defeat Kentucky & Georgia in their next 2 games, making UT vs. SC for a #1 SEC East tie w/ Florida. S. Carolina is a much better team w/ a better QB than when they played Georgia, so UT-SC should be a good game. Either way, I think Florida will still end up winning the SEC East because they’ll beat S. Carolina & own the tiebreaker w/ Tennessee.

Mr. College Football,

There is nothing wrong with Ga. Tech.

One blown pass coverage.

One great catch of a perfectly thrown ball with a defensive back all over the receiver.

One fumble by a guy who hasn’t fumbled in 300 carries.

One questionable holding call on an all ACC tackle on a critical third down play.

Take anyone of those away and Georgia Tech wins the game.

Get off of this team’s back and get off the coach’s back.

Are they disappointed - you bet they are. Are they down - no way. Will they bounch back against Miami - you bet.

8 - 3 is a great season.

And, PS, there are no short cuts in the ACC either.

Get off of the coaches and players case. They got beat, they are young. Same reason Texas is young, Ok, is young and USC (the real one) is young. They don’t have enough scholarships to keep it re-loading. Every team can beat any team. UT basically had 3 weeks to get ready for UGA, and they did. Give the coaches credit. Give the players credit. UGA will be ready when they need to be. How many times in 5 years has our team been outcoached, outplayed, out hustled. Not many! Figure it out and the keep you mouth shut.

If there needs to be changes in the staff, Richt will do it. You don’t know what you are talking about when you blast the coaches, players, program. Just be quiet.

Florida, what a joke, they caught LSU flat and still lost. Tech, what can you say. They are bad getting worse. Auburn, not that young, South Carolina, they have a chance, and if they pull something out of the hat, be glad for them. They have never one a chammpionship in football at all.

Urban Meyer wieners, crooks, and thugs, 3 years he will have to vacate, just like everywhere else he has been. They will be begging for Zook to come back before it is all over with.

Dawg fans, complain about the parking, or Adams. These kids are playing thier hearts out. Let them do it. Cheer for them, and see the results.

Tony, if you will re-read the GT coverage in the Sunday AJC C6, you’ll have your answer right from the mule’s mouth:

“If I knew what was going on, I’d do something about it,” said Tech coach Chan Gailey, clearly frustrated in the aftermath, with his sixth Tech team edging closer to having their bowl named Emerald than, say, Orange at the end of the season. “You know, it’s the same thing we’ve done in years past. It’s the same routine. It’s the same everything.”

THAT is exactly WHY it’s so easy (and appropriate) to blame COACHING. However, it does appear that Gailey is finally identifying HIMSELF as “the problem”, although he probably still doesn’t realize it. It wasn’t Patrick Nix, or Reggie Ball, or Taylor Bennett, etc…The ONLY CONSTANT through “years past, the same routine and the same everything” IS Chan “the Man with No Plan” Gailey

He spent the past 4 YEARS teaching his players by example that no matter how POORLY you perform on the field, if you’re my favorite QB, then I’ll put you above the rest of the team and you’ll play every single down when you should be sitting on the bench! And NOW he can’t figure out why his players are motivated whenever they want to be?!?!

Gailey DOESN’T KNOW what the problem is…Gailey doesn’t understand why the same things keep happening over and over, year after year…Gailey REPEATEDLY gives away games in the final minutes with some of the most IDIOTIC COACHING DECISIONS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL HISTORY! For example, what SANE and COMPETENT coach PUNTS on 4th down with 2 minutes to play when your team is BEHIND BY 3 POINTS in a Conference Champ Game? NOBODY! They don’t even do things that CERTIFIABLY STUPID in high school football…I mean, why even show up and play as a player or spend your hard-earned cash as a fan when you ALREADY KNOW this coach has an “L” on his forehead and he’s a proven master of snatching DEFEAT from the jaws of victory in a game’s final moments?!?!?

GAILEY IS THE PROBLEM…For those who still need to hear it again, GAILEY IS THE PROBLEM!! However, he’s the problem UNTIL 2011 because Tech CAN’T and WON’T fire him because his CONTRACT DOESN’T ALLOW IT. Woe is Tech…

einstein, you are certainly no einstein, you are wrong on all counts. no-1, 2 mill a year puts richt at around the middle of the pack in the sec.saban makes 4 mill a year, meyer makes 3.5,tubby and fulmer both make more than richt,i don’t know what miles makes, usc got spurrier for 1.5 but that will probably change soon,as there is a bidding war for good coaches in div 1,or whatever they are calling it nowdays.you can compare carr at michigan,3mill+,BTW he lost to a div-1aa school this year.2-rivals only measures speed, strenght and high school stats.there is no sure way to recruit talent.all top sec teams recruit well 3, usc and ut are not a bunch of stiffs.we have talent, but we happen to play in the most talented conference in the country, especially noted for speed.the average lb in the sec runs a 4.6 40 or less,as fast as most running backs. 4-red shirting is the future of the program,it lets the kids gain weight, get stronger in the weight room, adjust to the speed of college football, and results in the biggest guarrantee of winning,5 yr seniors on the o line.a team loaded with redshirt seniors and jrs on the line will win football games,no matter how many stars they had as recruits.i would take a team with 3 or even 2 star five year linemen and beat a team with 4 and 5 star freshmen and sophmores every time.moreno was redshirted, and has taken off like a house afire.i wish we had a whole o line, and a few d linemen and linebackers in the red shirt program.remember that green and dj were redshirted, stafford wasn’t.who has gotten the most of their ability so far? 5-i would say rb is one of the stronger positions on our team, even with brown out for a while we still have moreno, and lump is back.what would a true freshman do that brown and moreno havent?think before you post!

Tony, South Carolina is a young team also. With Jasper Brinkley out hurt, we only start one senior on defense. They only start four on offense at center, TE, FB and TB.

A RS freshman QB is unbeaten as a starter, the number one pass defense features three sophomores and a junior as starters.

The point is, they’re not having trouble learning how to win as a young team.

The problem with Tech is that there is no consistency. They beat teams that they are supposed to lose to and lose to teams they should beat. They have a conservative NFL coach in charge of a college team. Bad combination. Also, we have always struggled against the deep ball. Any decent passing quaterback is going to have a field day against our secondary. Maybe next year!

chuck, you are comparing apples to oranges, wait until you beat uf to start bragging,i am sure coach steve would tell you the same thing.hey tech fans, before you start searching for a new coach, how about backing your own program.start selling out that stadium for one thing, you played for the acc title last year, and you had to give away pizza to sell tickets?what a disgrace.if you want to compete with the bowdens, south beach, and frank beamer for recruits you are going to have to get off those fat,hi-tec wallets of yours and up-grade your program.your stadium needs to be expanded, but only if you fill it up.you don’t need to have seats for 90,000 if only 50,000 are showing up.i don’t think chan is your problem,it is the administration and the FAN base.or lack thereof.i have to buy extra tickets and contribute to your program to see a tech-ga game at tech.i have a novel idea.why don’t you buy tickets and contribute to your own program, and get some top brass that care about football?i am a uga fan,but i want tech to be a top of the line program again.i would love to go to a tech-ga game in atlanta, in a rebuilt, expanded stadium full of people, and see a game that means a division title for both teams.you want a good program?quit b*** about coaching, roll up your sleeves, get off your wallet and go to work.for you richt bashers, shut up!

Hey Doubledown Dawg:

Do you honestly beleive what you said, “Remember, men, this is UGA football - the best tradition and history in college football.”? I can name several teams with better tradition and history in college football. Texas, USC (the USC not SCAR), Notre Dame, Michigan, Ohio State, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Alabama among others. Go ask around nationally and GA won’t be on the list of all time great history and traditions in the game.

Also Tony Barnhart, it’s incredibly easy to place the MD loss on the GT players and say the Seniors need to “step up”…But isn’t it kind of in the job description of a head coach to ensure his players are both physically and mentally prepared for gridiron battle? There were powerful performances by several key Tech players, but when it came down to it, the players and the fans WERE ROBBED by a head coach who says he doesn’t know what’s “going on”, so he’s UNABLE to “do something about it”. Let me help you Coach Gailey…

According to the game notes at http://ramblinwreck.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2007-2008/gt100607.html#GAME.PLY

this was the PLAY CALLING on Tech’s final possession:

G 1-10 G26 GEORGIA TECH drive start at 06:31.

G 1-10 G26 T. Choice rush for 9 yards to the GT35 (Justice, J.J.).

G 2-1 G35 T. Choice rush for 6 yards to the GT41, 1ST DOWN GT (Philistin, D.;Muhtadi, D.).

G 1-10 G41 R. Grant rush for 3 yards to the GT44 (Feliciano, C.).

G 2-7 G44 T. Choice rush for 3 yards to the GT47 (Feliciano, C.).

G 3-4 G47 T. Bennett pass complete to D. Thomas for 15 yards to the MD38, 1ST DOWN GT (Varner, C.).

G 1-10 M38 T. Choice rush for 8 yards to the MD30 (Philistin, D.).

G 2-2 M30 T. Choice rush for no gain to the MD30 (Barnes, K.).

G 3-2 M30 R. Grant rush for 5 yards to the MD25, 1ST DOWN GT (Philistin, D.).

G 1-10 M25 R. Grant rush for no gain to the MD25 (Philistin, D.;Moore, D.).

G 2-10 M25 Timeout Maryland, clock 01:21.

G 2-10 M25 T. Choice rush for no gain to the MD25 (Philistin, D.;Justice, J.J.).

G 3-10 M25 Timeout Maryland, clock 01:14.

G 3-10 M25 R. Grant rush for 2 yards to the MD23 (Fokou, M.;Covington, T.), PENALTY GT holding (A. Gardner) 10 yards to the MD35, NO PLAY.

G 3-20 M35 Timeout Georgia Tech, clock 01:09.

G 3-20 M35 R. Grant rush for no gain to the MD35 (Fokou, M.).

G 4-20 M35 Timeout Maryland, clock 01:00.

G 4-20 M35 T. Bell field goal attempt from 52 MISSED - wide right, spot at MD35, clock 00:54.

Now by my count, that’s ELEVEN rushing plays and ONE pass called in what would clearly be Tech’s FINAL POSSESSION of the game…This includes the final FOUR plays called: Rush for NO GAIN, Rush for NO GAIN, Rush for 2 yards (10-yd Holding Penalty), Rush for NO GAIN.

I might add that there were TIMEOUTS CALLED in between those final four plays, so Gailey and Bond have no “we were in our hurry up offense and had no time to discuss play options” excuse…

This was simply ABYSMAL DIV-1A OFFENSIVE PLAY CALLING with the game AND SEASON quite obviously on the line!

Why, MD didn’t even NEED a Defensive Coordinator for the final 4 plays Tech called…I mean, SEVEN of the previous EIGHT plays were rushes and you’re matching “wits” with a head coach who PUNTED on 4th down with 2 min to play in a Conf Champ Game while BEHIND on the scoreboard! So what would YOU be expecting Tech to do once they reached the 25-yd line with 1st and 10???

There was absolutely NO MYSTERY that Tech would RUN THE BALL, despite Bennett’s 2nd half REBIRTH, going 13-for-16…Now keep in mind that on 3rd and TWENTY from the MD 35, Tech had just called TEN of the last ELEVEN plays RUSHING!!!!!!!! Here was John Bond’s so-called THINKING when HE and GAILEY then called another DRAW for NO GAIN that effectively ENDED Tech’s season quite prematurely:

“We were trying in my mind to get 4 or 5 yards, to make it 47 instead of 52 [yards on the field goal], ” Bond said. “In our minds, that’s what we were trying to get on the draw call. We were thinking in terms of possession pass, but we thought based on all their tendencies they had shown, they were probably going to play coverage. We had run the draw earlier, once for 8 [yards], once for 5.”

Face it, Bond has already been GAILEYIZED! What game was this guy watching??? Are football coaches subject to mandatory drug testing? “Their tendencies they had shown”? WTF?!?! Bennett was ON FIRE, 13-for-16 in the 2nd half and Tech had just RUSHED on 10 of the past 11 plays! And this braintrust thought they would “trick” the MD defenders with a friggin DRAW?

Gailey’s position? “I really thought if we got him under 50 he’d make it,” Gailey said. LOOK NO FURTHER for why Tech lost — no, HANDED — this game to MD! A head coach so PARALYZED WITH FEAR that he WANTS 2 yds on a 3-and-20 and an OC who only WANTS 4 or 5 yds.

Whatever happened to WANTING 20 yds OR MORE in a 3rd and 20 situation?!?!?! Why just lay down and play dead at the very time when your players should be UNLEASHED and allowed to play for Victory? Because that’s Chan Gailey…And now that’s John Bond…And that’s BECOME Tech Football…Yuuccckkkk!!! I need to throw up again…

So Tony Barnhart, be a man and TAKE IT BACK! that it’s Tech’s Players who need to step up…The REAL SOLUTION is Tech has a Head Coach who needs to step down.

I agree having a bad game or bad year is absolutely no excuse to fire anybody. However, we a DC produces very bad defenses more often than he puts out a good one over SEVERAL years and sometimes that requires a change. Remember that Martinez is not a proven DC. Dang, Tony. Why didn’t I think of that? Now that you mention it, it probably WAS the seniors fault that Tech lost to Maryland, and Virginia too, for that matter. Come to think of it, wasn’t Reggie Ball a senior last year? I suppose that means that the pathetic end to last season was the senior’s fault, too. Since you have it all figured out, while you are buying gailey coffee tomorrow, just let him know its all about the seniors, and that he is doing a fine job of coaching the Wreck.

Couldn’t agree with Give Me a Break more. The team was flat, with no sense of urgency. That is coaching! It is assinine to even consider CMR in jeopardy; no one could be better. However, he strongly needs to consider a change in certain assistants(D without calling names). Check the record of play, drives, etc. over the last few years. The “great” Alabama win should NEVER have gone into overtime!

By the way, I heard ERK’s portrait at the Butts-Mehre Building had crashed to the floor and shattered when the building was opened Sunday am.

Tripp Chandler played a very good game for those who have been on his back. He made several very good catches while getting hammered. Moreno caught a short range bullet at his shoetops for a good gainer on a screen. Goodman’s catch was a year’s end highlight type of catch. Let’s get off the receivers for a change!

Worst half of football at UGA in over 45 years. Don’t call Dawg fans whining, crying, etc.; this situation is not your routine loss. There are serious problems especially on the defensive side of the ball. As stated above, experience is not a substitute for toughness and desire. It’s OK to get beat, but don’t go down without a fight.

I question the inconsistency with Martinez’ defense. Cutcliffe has his number big time, but more importantly we’re not fundamentally sound on defense right now. Much better defense when Van Gorder was here.

I keep hearing about next year being a potential great year for us & I hope it is, but the schedule is most definitely not in our favor. It must be one of the hardest in the nation next year.

Most of the time, the game lies within the effort and hearts of the players. Its the coaches’ jobs to put them in the best position to win. Don’t blame the Tenn game on Richt. But you can blame the Tech / Md game on Gailey. You play to win.

Tony, You are an excellent sage of college football.

That said, a great majority of us in Tech Nation are justifiably disappointed in the coaching decisions on the final sequence of plays that led to a 52-yard field goal attempt (low percentage … even in the PROs).

Whatever shortcomings one may find with players. And I can’t think of many … in the second half… COACHES are well paid to make smart decisions at the end of the game.

The decisions made on the last 5 to 6 play calls were very disappointing and roundly deserving of sharp criticism.

The players fought hard to get down to the 25 and win it.

Then the coaches kept them from winning it.

That is the overwhelming view of most of the astute observers in Tech Nation. Ergo, it is close to the truth.

I hate it most for the players, because the coaches let them down.

But they are all human…and it is just a game…but we invest ourselves in it…so we want our guys to succeed.

We are dead last in graduating football players who are given six years to graduate. I read more about our football players in the police blotters than in the sports pages in the offseason. Now, during football season, I have to endure losses to Vandy, Kentucky, USC, UT (again), and UF. Exactly why are we paying Mark Richt so much? Why are we wafer thin and young at O-line? When we started losing kids on the offensive line wasn’t there any sense of urgency to recruit, um, O-lineman? After being relevant for a few years, we are now a second to third tier program in the SEC. Richt needs to evaluate everything from players to coaches on his team. Oh, and maybe Wil Muschamp (UGA 1987) would like come back home and be our D-Coordinator.

You have to look at the situational play calling. Chan is still controlling the offense and he is still using the pro mind set. That is what’s wrong at Tech.

It is not the players.

As far as #4 - Taylor Bennett did play better, but GT was beaten by the poor coaching of Coach Gomer - errr Chan Gailey.

I am a UGA alum and I feel like I need to say something here:

1-As much as I hate to lose sometimes it happens. Learn to deal with it like a man and not a crybaby. 2-I love to hear a bunch of armchair QB’s that have never even stepped on a football field, critique a group of coaches that evaluate, coach and study football 7 days a week. 3-As a Georgia fan, we need to look at our program for what it is. We have 1 NC in 1980 and a bunch of average seasons. We do NOT have the tradition in football like ND,SoCal, Michigan,OK, ETC. GET OVER IT. CMR has done more for this program than any other coach including DOOLEY. 4-Willie may not be the guy but if a change needs to be made, I’m sure it will happen. 5-When our o-line grows up a bit, Stafford will be awesome. 6-All of you people that keep saying that since CMR is a christian and therefore that makes him weak are so wrong and obviously have not spent enough (or any) time reading the Bible to know what a christian is. 7-Please ask yourself this question: Should it ruin my week when a group of 18-21 year old kids do not perform to level I think they should? If it does you need to seriously evaluate your priorities in life. I can assure you that in the big scheme of things it doesn’t matter one bit. 8-Even though UT beat us it doesn’t change the reality that most UT fans have no teeth, no brains and sleep with their mommas. Reality sucks in Tennessee!

Go Dawgs! Beat Vandy!

bobo’s a dumbass. give the play calling back to richt. uga is a RUNNING team. not a PASSING team. bobo was a former qb, so he tries to show off stafford, who sucks majorly by the way, and costs drives that ultimatley should end with touchdowns. also, kregg lumpkin had around the same yards with a third of the carries moreno had. why not run with him more? the dawgs won’t be good again until our idiot coordinator realizes stafford is not john elway reincarnate

Gailey must go. Plain and simple. He is the problem. He is a nice man who can recruit pretty well but he is an awful gameday coach who always makes the wrong call and cannot inspire anyone. If there is any doubt: He started Reggie Ball for 4 years. The worst QB in Div 1A. What a joke Tech is! My UGA friends are right, and I hate to admit it.

if Rev. Richt is such a christian and righteous person, shouldn’t he donate a large portion of his millions to the poor and sick or something? isn’t there something in the bible about that it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven? and why are his players such bad boys with his sterling example?

COMPLAIN AND CALL FOR COACHES HEADS ALL YOU WANT. BOTTOM LINE, A NEW DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR IS NOT GOING TO GO OUT THERE AND WRAP UP AND MAKE SOLID TACKLES LIKE A 1A ATHLETE SHOULD. UNTIL THIS TEAM LEARNS SOME FUNDAMENTALS ON BOTH SIDES, EXPECT DISMAL PERFORMANCES SUCH AS LAST WEEK. AUBURN IS GETTING THEIR ACT TOGETHER, HE**, WHY CAN’T WE?

Richt cannot afford another loss to Tennessee in 2008. I am already saying UGA will likely lose in Columbia (a certainty) and either at LSU or at Arizona State. If he loses to UT, he may not be coaching at UGA in 2009. I donate a lot of money annually, and the patience level is thin when all you hear is how “great” our recruiting has been. I think Richt’s problem is he has some below average assistants (Bobo, Martinez, Jancek, Eason) and a bunch of ndisciplined “athletes.” He better make some staff changes or risk losing his job soon. Tennessee is a JOKE compared to Georgia in terms of recruiting results, but Fulmer does more with less than Richt. That is very disturbing.

I am a UGA Alumni as well, a Christian does not mean that you can not have passion for the game so get of your Holy trump on this blog, this is a man’s game and there is nothing in the Bible saying do not have passion as a matter of fact it does say have passion. To get a group of kids motivated is part of the job and if he can not do it by calmly asking then putting a little fire in it works well, as a matter of fact, my preacher uses a little fire and it gets everyone going and signing, so GET OVER YOUR SELF. We are not asking to be a national champion team, we are asking to play decent is the SEC like we have in the past, and YES we have played in the SEC well in the past so get your facts straight and go play soccer!!!!!!!!!!!

It is a GAME. One game. Albeit this one game exposed our beloved Dawgs as what, we feared, we had earlier in the year after the USC loss. Some teams loaded with young talent can overcome that obstacle, we obviously cannot. I stated on this blog that we would lose a couple of more games but I didn’t believe we could lose to the vols (and in such an embarrassing fashion).

It is difficult to watch your team show up for a football game with no intention of winning it. I’m not the fairweather fan, I’m UGA through and through and I’m not going to rant and rave, telling CMR what to do and who to fire. Thats his job. We knew it was going to be a difficult year coming in and I’m not bashing my Dawgs but it is gut-check time. Unless they (staff and players) want to sit out the 07 bowl season they’ll need to get busy. Play like we saw Saturday won’t win them any games remaining on the schedule. Vandy took a bite out of us last year in this same mindset. Time will tell. Lets see if CMR can motivate this team for a cellar dweller. Thats just one slot below the Dawgs btw

I just find it odd that tech fans and ugs fans are on the same blog venting about the situation of there football program. i see way more UGA fans on here and thats ok, because i know for a fact that tech fans are just as passionate about what going on down at the flats lately, and we’re not happy about it. but i want people on both sides to realize something, all things in the dark will eventually come to light when we lose. all of the glaring weaknesses we try to cover up after a win and act like things are just fine are hidden after a big win. both schools just had huge wins less than three weeks ago. UGA beat Ala on the road in overtime, and my jackets beat what looked like an unstoppable clemson team with argueably the best duo of running back in the country. here we are a couple of weeks later and we are ready to fire head coaches and assistants, and we are calling out players and playcalling. we forget that we play against teams that prepare and train and practice just like we do. i don t think its embarrassing to play a team on the road and lose. teams are suppose to win at home. and sometimes, no matter how good we are or think we are, there is nothing we can do about it. now UGA plays Vandy on the raod this week and i cant imagine CMR will allow his team to even get off the bus with the same demeanor that had lsst week against UT. and my jackets play Miami on the road, i cant imagine Gailey with a team that has its back against the wall again, will go out and not play better than last week. now i am not saying the either team will win or lose, but preparation is key and sometimes after big wins the let down factor sets in and a good butt kicking is what you need to get things back in order. these were two devasting losses for both team, but think these were good losses because it puts things back in perspective. Georgia running game is not perfect and the OL isnt where it need to be right now, and Stafford still has a long way to go. and Techs defense has some wholes and sometimes its too agressive. the passing game hasnt been consistent and Taylor isnt where tech fans wnat him to be as well. we all went into this season with questions at every position and phase of the game. we also went into this season with high hopes and expectations and as a fan thats how you are suppose think. but lets not give up on our teams just yet, as a matter of fact lets not ever give up on our team. Maryland and UT have players, and fans and coaches and trainers and alumi just like we do. why cant the odds be in there favor to win a game. now i hate to lose and lay blame at times as well, but its not the end of the world when we lose. So Tech and UGA fans i love the passion, but lets just see what happens the rest of the season, and no matter what stand behind your team because it means alot to the players themselves in the end..

GO JACKETS!!!

I love it - UGAg fans complaining about Richt!!! Then again, he did say that Matthew Stafford was the best quarterback he had ever coached.

If Taylor Bennett had played in the first half as he did in the second, Tech would not have been in the position to make the field goal to win the game. And I still do not see how the refs did not call Maryland for holding ONCE all game, but Tech gets 3??

The one problem I see was that Rashad should have run towards the middle of the field more to set up the field goal. As for passing then, a great coach once said that 3 things happen when you pass, and 2 of them ain’t good.

Proud Tech fan

Nice blog entry. And pretty dern insightful coming from a Tech fan. I agree with most of that. The one exception is that the home team is supposed to win. Thats not neccessarily the case. The home field is clearly an advantage in most instances but, the best team is suppose to win. UGA certainly wasn’t the best team last Sat in Knoxville. They were not the best team in my mind because they were not at all prepared to play a Vol team with their backs against the wall. Prior to that game it was a coin toss as to which team was the better of the two. Back on topic, I also agree with your statement on our teams being prepared. Our team (UGA) hasn’t been prepared for any game this year with one (possible) exception being the OSU game. I’m a dawg fan and will continue to be win or lose. I’ll never call out a player on a blog or anywhere else but I won’t hesitate to call out a coach as I see fit. Being a fan gives me that right. Our team plainly and simply is not prepared game in and game out. It’s subjective as to why not but I tend to point to coaching.

Which Georgia team will show up on Saturday? The Oklahoma State team, or the Tennessee team? Can give all kinds of excuses, but the guys are old enough to understand that if you ‘dress out’, you should come to play. That did not happen during the first half of the Tennessee game. Pretty pathetic!!

Thats the $64 k question. I’d like to know that too. I’m not entirely certain the dawgs have shown up to “play” all year. Rather than they were at the game and already in pads and said “what the hell? we’re here, just as well play and make a game out of it” that exception of course is the USC and TN game. I personally would not mind losing every game if we played with some fire in the belly. I’m just not seeing it. That too is prepardness

As a GA.Tech fan I think sometimes that there is a whole lot of luck that can come in to play in a football game. It isn’t always just about skill or X’s and O’s.That’s not an excuse for losing or poor play but that’s an intangible that comes big in a game that can change the outcome of a game. Our problem is that we have had the worst things happen at the worst possible times. In close games anything that could go wrong has gone wrong and here we are frustrated about. Oh well maybe we’ll get a lucky in Miami next week. We’ll need it! Outta here!

Look in the sports dictionary under incompetent and mediocre and there’s a picture of Chan Gailey. Seven year contract or no, he has to go.

The very idea that he can say, “if I knew what was wrong I would fix it.” He’s paid over a million dollars a year to know what’s wrong. Look in the mirror Chan. That’s what’s wrong.

Many good comments this week by Tech fans. We won’t be in an ACC championship game, but, including the bowl game, do you realize that Tech could still go 10-3 on the season?

If a Tech player theorized in the preseason, that “we could run the table,” why not just let bygones be bygones, and run the table from here on out?

SC’s remaining schedule I don’t think will fare to favorable for them. Yes they beat a less than mediocre Dawg team and kept it respectable at LSU. We still don’t know where KY falls when the chips are down. Arkansas is not a nice place to play and they still have TN and FL looming. The Gamecock fans are in for a let down. They’re slightly better than Georgia and will probably finish that way.

How fast have you guys swithched out on Coach Ritch. When the team was winning strong he was the best thing going. Now the team faces some transitional years and all of a sudden Ritch can’t coach any longer. He never was outwardly emotional since day one, so why are you concerned about his out emotions now while he is coaching?
