Call me crazy, but Florida upsets LSU

Auburn’s upset of Florida, Alabama’s loss to Florida State and Oregon, which was in position to beat Cal but fumbled on the one-yard line, gave us a record of 7-3 last week. That makes us 36-14 on the season.

So here once again, and back by popular demand, is the Fearless Friday Forecast:

1. Florida at LSU: Occasionally in this business we are called upon to throw caution to the wind. At times we just have suspend all pretense of common sense and made decisions that have absolutely no basis in logic. This, dear readers, is one of those times. LSU has the nation’s No. 1 defense and they are playing at home. ESPN’s College Game Day will be in Baton Rouge. CBS will show the game in prime time. LSU is No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time since 1959. The Tigers should roll easily in this game. You’re going to call this pick dumb and you’re probably right. But here it is anyway: Florida 24, LSU 20.

2. Georgia at Tennessee: The Volunteers have had an extra week to get ready for what is a very important game for coach Phillip Fulmer. For if Tennessee loses, the Vols drop to 0-2 in the SEC and out are of the conference race just one week into October. All of the intangibles are on Tennessee’s side. But as an old coach once said, intangibles ain’t worth nothing if you can’t stop the running game. Unless John Henderson and Al Wilson are coming back, the Vols still don’t have anybody to slow down the run. And if they commit too many players to Georgia’s running game, Matt Stafford will burn them with the play action pass. Georgia 28, Tennessee 20.

3. Georgia Tech at Maryland: The Yellow Jackets got back on track with a big win against Clemson last week. Now we want to see if they can play another smash mouth game with the Terps, who knocked off No. 10 Rutgers last week. Maryland is No. 8 in the ACC against the run (141.2 ypg) so the Jackets can be counted upon to serve up a lot of running back Tashard Choice. But QB Taylor Bennett is going to have to make a couple of plays before this game is over. He will. Georgia Tech 17, Maryland 10.

4. Vanderbilt at Auburn: If you’re an Auburn fan, you should be scared to death of this game. The Tigers are coming off a huge upset last week at Florida. The game starts at 11:30 in the morning, local time, and Auburn has a history of missing their wake up call for these games. Vanderbilt is well coached and needs an upset somewhere along the line if it is going to get to a bowl. This could be the spot. Auburn struggles but finds a way to win at home. Auburn 14, Vanderbilt 7.

5. Virginia Tech at Clemson: The season is only five games old and already there is a sense of urgency at Clemson. The Tigers made a million mistakes last week against Georgia Tech and in Virginia Tech are facing the league’s No. 2 scoring defense (15.0 ppg). Virginia Tech will try to shut down the run and hope that Clemson QB Cullen Harper doesn’t beat them. Harper will bounce back from last week’s game and play well. Clemson gets it done at home. Clemson 20, Virginia Tech 17.

6. N.C. State at Florida State: QB Xavier Lee gets his first start of the season for Florida State and here is what inquiring minds want to know: Can Lee, who has a whole lot of talent, keep the job for an entire game? Lee has always been a player who breaks your heart because he’ll follow a great play by one that just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. But given the state of Florida State’s offense, which is pretty shaky, coordinator Jimbo Fisher may have to live with the mistakes for a while. Won’t matter today, though. Florida State 31, N.C. State 10.

7. Miami at North Carolina: The Hurricanes have more talent and should win the game easily, but this one is going to be closer than the experts think. Three of the Tar Heels (1-4) four losses have been by a total of 12 points. And Miami didn’t exactly set the world on fire last week in beating Duke (24-14). Butch Davis says his ties with Miami, where he was once the head coach, are not a factor in this game. Don’t believe that. Miami 28, North Carolina 17.

8. Texas vs. Oklahoma (in Dallas): It’s been a long time since this game created so little buzz. But this is still a huge game because the loser is definitely out of the national championship hunt and probably out of the Big 12 race as well. Texas QB Colt McCoy really got beat up last week and if he plays, he’ll probably be a little gun shy. In fact, Oklahoma will see to that. Oklahoma lost to Colorado last week but they didn’t get dominated physically the way Texas did. That’s why the Sooners have the edge. Oklahoma 27, Texas 17.

9. Ohio State at Purdue: Five of the last six games in this series have been decided by seven points or less. Four of those were by four points or less. Something in this game has got to give. Purdue has the Big Ten’s best offense (45.4 points per game). Ohio State has the league’s best defense (7.2 ppg). Ohio State is trying to position itself should LSU or Southern Cal stumble down the stretch. Go with defense. Ohio State 24, Purdue 14.

10. Wisconsin at Illinois: I’m not sure about much, but I do know this. Any team that gives up 31 points to The Citadel is probably not the No. 5 team in the nation. But thanks to all the upsets last Saturday, that is where Wisconsin (5-0) is ranked as they go to Champaign to play the Fighting Ron Zookers. Illinois beat Penn State last week at home and will pull another upset on Saturday. Illinois 31, Wisconsin 28.

Alright, Tony..the D-Man agrees with your Ga-Tenn accessment. Fulmer and the big orange will give it their best shot, but Ga will be too much for them. Ga by 17. Now as far as the Florida game is concerned…No way man. No way. LSU is going to beat Florida silly. The defense will answer the Tebow question and the offense will kill Florida’s suspect defense. I see a statement game here. LSU wins by at least 14. I also see a possiblity of Tebow being injured in this game. One too many QB bootlegs or draw plays. As far as Tech, I do not see them winning this week. They will have a letdown after the big win last week. I see Tech losing by 3. As far as your other predictions…yeah, the D-man can hang with them. Alright babies, that’s the D-man’s predictions. Take it to the bank. Sorry Tony, but the D-man’s gotta say it like it is…Peace!

“Illinois beat Penn State last week at home and will pull another upset on Saturday.”

An upset only in the minds of the pollsters. Illinois is favored by a FG.

Georgia may be walking into a hornet’s nest tomorrow as UT has their backs against the wall. Playing desperate teams on the road in the SEC is always dangerous.

Very nervous about the Auburn game but this team has been through a lot already and they certainly don’t want losses to Miss. St. AND Vandy in the same year. I think they’ll be ready.

I agree with it all except the LSU game.

Defenses are finding more and more ways to deal with Tim Tebow. Unless Florida moves past this scheme they have going, I think not only will they lose to LSU but to either UGA or South Carolina as well.

I’m hoping FSU will have a shot at them. We’ll see how Lee progresses. Im most certainly counting the chickens before the mother is even hatched….

Any adult who tries to make a living based on the actions of young men between the ages of 17 and 24 has to be a little crazy.

Prior to last nights’ UK-USC game, the last game I watched was AU-UF. Compared to the Auburn game, the UK-USC game looked like a half-speed scrimmage to me. I was wrong yesterday about UK; they didn’t want it more.

Florida 24, LSU 20 Sorry, but I don’t see this happening. Of course, I don’t want it to happen either. I’d prefer LSU lose to Auburn and some other team in the SEC West.

Georgia 28, Tennessee 20 I really can’t argue this one. But I still have a nagging feeling that the Vols are going to pull an upset.

Auburn 14, Vanderbilt 7 Let’s hope for a focused Auburn team. I sincerely hope that after knocking off Florida we can put more than 14 points on the board against Vanderbilt.

Anthony, Anthony, Athony:

Given that you predicted that JaMarcus would start the 2006 season as LSU’s starting QB, but go to the sidleines “shortly” and that Bama would beat LSU in Baton Rouge, it is MOST reassuring to see you once again off the mark on LSU.

JaMarcus “merely” went # 1 in the NFL draft and LSU beat Bama in Baton Rouge.

The UF/LSU game will follow the result of the chickens game last night. A physical defensive team at home at night in front of a crazy crowd will easily beat the offensive team with no D. Tebow may watch the second half from the hospital. The first 5 minutes of the 3rd quarter will be interesting in Knoxville. Last year Cutcliff made adjustments at halftime and Martinez had no answer. Martinez had better no let Cutcliff out coach him again this year! Dogs will win with big plays as UT sells out to stop the run!

YEAH!!! My favorite time to post and vent my good sense and my non sense all at once. I picked SC last night…so I’m undefeated going into Sat.!

  1. You have to love the number 1 team at home. You have to love a UF team coming off a loss with something to prove. You have to hate Early Doucet being out. You have to hate Joiner trying to play repo man. I Really really like UF’s chances here…don’t know why but I do…I think Adams/Harvin therash around on special teams…UF-19 LSU-16

  2. This is a dangerous game for my dogs. UT has 2 losses against top 10 teams. They have had 2 weeks to prepare. This game is alays filled with HUGE big plays. UGA should pound the rock…pound the rock….pound the rock. UGA D better play tough on those UT recievers that have stepped up. Ainge is capapble of winning games by himself…but there is something about that UGA running game that I like…..UGA-22 UT-16

  3. GT played a very nice game last week. Clemson’s game plan sucked. MAryland is playing very nice…it is at home. I thik GT has a better d than Rice by far….and Choice is a beast no matter how you put it. I like GT with a late score 27-21

  4. I don’t think AU will come out flat….they know how good they can play now when they put it together. AU D came around with a nice gameplan…and puts together another one this week. AU-26 Vandy-13

  5. This one is intresting. How will Clemson respond? Will VT put up some ppoints with that freshamn QB? I bet 20 bucks that Clemson runs the ball 60-40 instead of the other way around last week against TECH. That makes the difference against VT. Clemson 24-VT-20

  6. Why in the world did Tom O Brian leave Boston College for N.C.Sate???The biggest mystery of off season college football I think. I mean LIKE WOW HERE PEOPLE…N.C.STATE IS HORRIBLE…but FSU goes back to their old ways and makes this one close. FSU-20 Wolf Pack horrible/9

  7. The U needed a late TD against Duke. Heels started decent but have been getting smoked.Miami has to much D for T.J.Yates….Wright does it again late. The U-26 Heels-10

  8. Oklahoma is felling horrible after last week. McCoy is feeling horrible becasue he hasbeen getting lit up….TExas was way overratd as we can see….Sooners were not…they just let up and made mistakes last week that cost them…OU-35 Longhorns-17

  9. Intresting and MY UPSET OF THE DAY..Last week I picked Miss St. over SC….didn’t work out…so this week going with PURDUE over the O-State buckeyes…you heard it here! Perdue 24 Buckeyes-19

  10. Tony your right Wisconsin is not the number 5 team in the country. However is Illinois that good? Ipicked them last week….and I’m going aginst them this week. Badgers move up with the LSU loss…Badgers 28-Zookers-17

Tere you hae it folks…..10-0 here I come…and GOOOOOOOO DAWGS!!!!!!!

I agree with Tony, LSU is primed for an upset. They have an excellent defense, no doubt, but they had a #1 pick safety last year who isn’t there anymore, and the overall #1 pick at QB, and they lost to Florida and Auburn a season ago. I remember distinctly how people were down on Chris Leak and the lack of a running attack for Florida after they lost to Auburn. But they were able to beat LSU. I’m not overlooking the losses that Florida suffered on defense from a season ago, I’m just saying that LSU aint some unbeatable juggernaut. Sure if you look at scores from their games, it looks impressive. But who have they beaten? Miss State, Mid Tenn, Tulane, and VaTech were blowouts but a 1-3 Tulane made LSU look poor for a half, and any GT or UGA fan knows that VaTech is poor on offense and can be thumped if you put pressure on their QB. So that win was given way too much hype at the time. LSU beat S. Carolina but not overwhelmingly. They have weaknesses and now there are 5 weeks of film, the last 2 especially for other teams to see.

I agree that GT should be able to take Maryland down in a low scoring tight game. Maryland has yet to find a QB worthy of running the Fridge’s offense, and GT has knocked Jordan Steffy out of a game before, so if he plays he aint scaring anybody with a gold helmet on. If not, it’s just another deer in headlights being led to the slaughter in a line of ACC QB’s for the Tenuta defense (Matt Ryan excluded). As long as Choice is able to answer the bell for 30 carries, Tech wins.

I think UGA wins, UT doesn’t carry the same prestige it once did, so no reason for UGA to feel worried about going to Knoxville. I’m not so sure Clemson will take VaTech, because it appears that Clemson’s annual implosion is starting early this year to miss the Halloween rush. I think Miami might be in trouble this weekend against UNC. Tony notes how close UNC’s losses have been and a peek at Miami’s record shows a thumping by OK and two awfully low scores against the likes of Fla Intnl and Duke, teams that should have at least 40 dropped on them by most big time programs. (The winless Fla Intnl for example had losses where they gave up 59, 55, and 47 points to Penn State, Kansas and Mid Tenn respectively. While Duke gave up 45 to Navy and UCONN.) I think UNC makes some progress and Miami gets knocked down a peg that they are obviously trending toward. Wisconsin will finally get exposed as overrated by Illinois.

  1. Tony, I hope you’re right about the Gators upsetting the Tigers, but I’m hoping with my heart and not calculating with my head. Florida will give LSU a good game, but the Gators are too young and have too many holes to truly contend this year. Prediction: Tigers win at home, but Gators keep it respectable. Bonus prediction: everyone who watches will acknowledge the fact that Tim Tebow is one tough kid.

  2. UGA generally wins the big ones on the road, and this is a rivalry game. The Vols are down, and it looks like the end of the Fulmer era is drawing to a close. Prediction: UGA by 10.

  3. The ACC teams are stunningly inconsistent this year, and any team could beat any other in any given week. Prediction: Terps win at home.

  4. If the Auburn Tigers are consistently inconsistent, they would find a way to lose to Auburn. Nah. Not gonna happen. Prediction: Auburn by 7.

  5. Clemson is only a so-so top-25 team, but Virginia Tech hasn’t scored more than 17 points against a Division I-A opponent this season. Prediction: Clemson wins at home, 20-17.

  6. Miami is in the middle of a serious rebuilding season, but UNC is only marginally better, if at all, than bottom-dweller Duke. Prediction: The “U” by 17.

  7. Another mediocre Florida team beats the snot out of another horrible North Carolina team. See comment 6 above and substitute FSU for Miami, and NCSU for UNC. Prediction: Noles by 17.

  8. Red River Shoot-Out! Woo-hoo! Okay, how come this game doesn’t feel that exciting this year? Probably because I’m not playing … Prediction: Longhorns in a surprise.

  9. The Revenge of the Big Slow (ominous Darth Vader theme music, please). Purdue is better, but not better than State. Prediction: OSU by 13.

  10. Y’know I want the Gators’ old coach, the Zooker, to do well, but I think Wisconsin is just a better team. Prediction: Bucky Badger abuses the phantom Illini mascot that the NCAA no longer allows to attend games.

“And that’s all I’ve got to say about that.” Forrest Gump, Alabama ‘69.

Tony, Normally, i might agree with your pick of Florida over LSU. Some teams just have a knack for having another teams number(i.e. what Auburn has done to Florida in recent history). Florida has had this kind of record against LSU but I just have a feeling this LSU team is special and that this is their year. I was at last year’s game at the Swamp and LSU played its poorest game of the year and the dropped punt, the fumbled kickoff, and the fumble on the one yard line had nothing to do with Florida’s causing them; they were all unforced LSU errors. I don’t look for that this year .

College football is a funny game. I remember in ‘03, the year LSU won the title. A mediocre Florida went to Baton Rouge and won 16-7. The LSU team played like they were wearing cement cleats - slow and sluggish. It’s possible it could happen again this year, but I doubt it.

The last time I looked UT is actually favored in this game, so if they win it won’t, technically, be an upset. At the same time, Tennessee’s current winning streak (one) is over this weekend and ours at Neyland continues.

As for LSU/FLA, seems to me that the ‘03 game was played during the day. This time it’s at night - and we already know how FLA is playing at night this year - and LSU’s record at home, at night, is pretty impressive. Of course Geogia beat ‘em there a decade, or so, ago (please don’t tell me that I just introduced Quincy Carter into this post). Regardless, Mr. Tebow has shown that if you hit him hard early, somehow he seems to get a little shy about it. LSU will lay the lumber to the kid and then we’ll see what happens.

Tony, Do you remember Ole Miss last week being in control of the game until the 4th Q? If their QB doesn’t fumble on the 1, they are down 14-0. What will Ainge do to the UGA suspect D? I think he throws for 4 td’s at least and UT wins 35-27…

Disagree on Florida/LSU - Tigers “D”, will be too much.

Also,

Woodson, did not look like and All-American to me, poor decision making. Ideal example of how the position SHOULD NOT be played. For the bulldogs;

Havercamp, did not practice this week, Vance will be the number 1, sub. Would be great if there were more guys ready too play on the OL.

Game will be determined by Stafford’s decision making ability. At this point not sure if Stafford is comparable to Greene, in his RS Freshman year. Stafford has the cannon-that does not win games.

Stafford throws behind the receivers, with too much velocity. Success equals throwing catchable balls, without forcing!!! Pat Dye, expressed concern about playing freshmen on the OL. These guys have made tremendous progress, my concern will they “wear down”, physically and mentally over the last half of the year. These guys are 18/19, and were not given time to develop physically mentally.

Tony, LSU & UF will be a close game. I like both, so it’s hard to predict.

UGA loses this weekend to UT. UT will be desperate and ready to play, plus home field advantage. UGA will go in overconfident and make too many mistakes. UT 24 UGA 21

Tech will beat Maryland. TB is gradually coming around and Choice and Cox, Wheeler and Roberson will be too much to handle. “Atlanta Gator” and “Noyellowinthisblood” will “eat crow” again this weekend!! GT 21 MD 7

ctb, what are YOU doing when Tech is in Study Hall? Sitting in your “single wide” dipping snuff, watching your black and white TV and spitting out the front door?? With your intelligence, I bet you didn’t make it to 8th grade…let alone get into college. You can’t even stick to the subject in this blog. What an embarrassment to yourself and whoever you represent! You’re probably a “dawg”.

So tired of hearing about how unstoppable and awesome LSUs defense is. Who have they beaten? South Carolina and VT? Uh… ok. Well in that case, I guess their National Champs already. They have yet to face a team anywhere near as good as the Gators. Florida wins, AND LSU will lose a game in the west this season as well (Auburn?). The SEC is just too competetive to have teams going undefeated (and when they do, they get snubbed from the BCS Championship game)

You are correct, I do think you’re logically crazy re UF-LSU. But I’m not so sure I don’t agree with you. Florida has a lot to prove and a lot to overcome with the Tony Joiner situation. I think they’ll be focused. More imporatantly I don’t think UF will be all Tebow & Harvin on offense and that they’ll throw caution to the wind defensively like they did in the second half against Auburn. I know our cornerback are young and in experienced, but they are also athletic and talented. Go with the latter. Put them on islands and apply pressure.

I really hate all these dumb predictions. UGA will have to play really really good to beat Tennessee. Tennessee is playing at their house, well rested and motivated to beat Georgia. so how you explain Tenn. is favored by 2. and Tony you are totally mistaken about LSU, I predict LSU will beat the crap out of Tebow. Its a statement game and LSU players still remember last year. However, I know you will pick Florida, because you always suck up for them, it is so obvious. Go Dawgs!

I’m hoping my Terps can pull out the home win…while inconsistency has been the hallmark of the ACC this year, keep in mind that Chris Turner, the Terps backup QB (previously 3rd stringer before the original backup was suspended) took charge in the 2nd half against Rutgers. And he’ll likely be the starter, in my eyes. In the end it’ll come down to whether Tech can keep it as a defensive, on-the-ground grinder, or if the Terps can push the tempo (and scoring).

Go Terps!!!

of course the Dawgs will beat the vals, we’re the best team in the SEC this year and could play with anybody in the country - and may have a chance to show the real USC how good we are. Our tradetion won’t let us lose another game this year and we really didnt lose to the other uSC, we just gave them the game. We have won six national football titles and we’ll win another one next year, if it doesn’t happen this year. Go Dawgs

Agree with all except the LSU/UF tilt. This might be a trap game for the Tigers were it not for all of the off-the-field distractions the Gators have had this week. This is the week that it will be revealed why it is not a good idea to use your QB as the centerpiece of your running game. If Tebow (Or “Tebeaux,” as they say in the bayou) gets beat up and the Gators have to turn to their talented, but inexperienced, freshman, watch out.

As for UT, I agree that their backs are against the wall, but I don’t sense a letup in the Dawgs this week (I did the week before USC). Road games keep Richt’s teams on edge. They aren’t as complacent. I think the Dawgs come to play and win by 10. I mean, seriously, “6th straight,” if UT is going to run the table, where are they going to come up with a defense? E-bay?

Finally, for all of the delirious Gamecocks out there, enjoy it while it lasts. It won’t be long. You’ve got two weeks of patsies to push your record to 7-1, and then three straight weeks of Arkansas, Tennessee and Florida. You’ll lose one of those games and it’ll be the Dawgs and the Gators playing for the right to get beat down by LSU on December 1. The Gamecocks will never win the SEC. I repeat, NEVER.

  1. Sometimes an upset in the making feels right, but this one isn’t it. The Tigers are for real. LSU by 14.

That’s right Heeldawg, the lamecocks will never win the SEC. They shouldn’t even be in the SEC. They can’t compare with our great tradetion of six national football championships, UGA on the sideline and us crazy fans barking so loud no team stands a chance in Sanford! We didn’t lose tho uSC this year, we gave them a gift. I really do hope they enjoy it cause it won’t happen ever again becuause of our tradetion and the fact that we have the best players of any team in the country - Go DAWGS!

October 5, 2007 10:44 PM | Link to this

The two things I am getting sick of hearing about in college football these days is how the Pac-10 is better than people think and how tough LSU is at home at night.

Florida will pull off the upset in Baton Rouge by 10. You heard me. Urban Meyer is one helluva a coach, and he was none too happy after last week’s performance. I expect the Gator D to be much better after a full week of learning how to wrap up properly. Last week the Gators flowed to the ball very well and made first contact within 2 yards of scrimmage. The problem was they simply didn’t wrap up. They will this week, and that will be enough to keep the LSU offense off the field. Then, about mid way through the 3rd, LSU’s defense will get a little winded and Timmy Tebow will find Percy Harvin for at least two big plays and one touchdown. Florida 24, LSU 14.

Tennessee is a ghost of its former self. I was actually nervous a few weeks ago when they came to Gainesville. After the game, I couldn’t believe how bad UT really was. Matthew Stafford is getting better week by week, and UGA actually has an effective running game for the first time in ages. Still won’t be enough to shuck the Jacksonville bugaboo later this month, but they will get to blow out Tennessee. Georgia 38, Tennessee 17.

The Red River Rivalry was supposed to be a good game this year. But the first time I saw Texas this year, I knew they weren’t very good. Oklahoma has looked impressive at times, and I think last week against Colorado was an aberration. Oklahoma 35, Texas 13.

After last year’s national chamionship, I don’t dignify the Big Ten with my time. But I will watch the Wisconsin-Illinois game. I think it is going to be one of the most fun games of the year. Both teams look promising, and Ron Zook has continued to turn in amazing recruiting classes. But, Zook isn’t a very good coach, and that will hurt Illinois in the 4th. Wisconsin 38, Illinois 34.

Georgia Tech has no offense. Tashard Choice will make a great NFL prospect, but he can’t carry the entire team every game. Maryland 17, GT 13.

Clemson and Virginia Tech might be more boring than GT-Clemson was last week. VA Tech also has no offensive presence and just aren’t a very good team. Clemson 10, VA Tech 3.

In parting, congratulations to South Carolina and Steve Spurrier on their win last night. I still don’t know why the Gamecocks are so good, but they are. I guess Coach Spurrier still has it after all.

It’s nice to see that the Stafford “haters” are are out for the game. Nice to see the “Runners” are also playing in the sandbox. If the Vols put 8 in the box I wonder if the “runners” still want to “pound the rock”? Funny how a smart Reptile fan see’s Stafford growing every game and some Dawgs don’t. Not enough but I recall last year, all people would talk about were his pics, now he’s only thrown 7 TD but he’s also has only 3 pics and his recored as a starter is 10-3. Yes sir, need to send that boy back to Texas. Darn I almost forgot his Coach said he’s done a great job helping the young “OL” so we better put that boy in the back of the bus for his ride back to Texas. By the way if you “haters” will just get together and buy the ticket at least you be walking the walk and not just BS ing the talk.

These picks are pretty easy: - Dawgs squeak out a win in Knoxville in Fulmer’s last season as the Vols’ head coach - the Great Pumpkin is a bit overripe. 34-30 Dawgs.

  • Auburn gets their #1 offensive weapon back today in Brad Lester - he may not start but he will play and he will run fast with the ball. Auburn’s defense will win the game as they did in Gainesville. 24-14 Auburn.

  • LSU self-destructed in Gainsville last year with about 3 turnovers in 5 minutes of clock time leading to lots of Gator points. The Gators will not be so lucky this year - their defense was exposed last week by Auburn, and Auburn shed a light on how to stop their limited offensive weapons. Tim Tebow will be sick of Tigers after last week and this week. LSU calls off the dogs before it gets too ugly. 45-21 LSU

Alabama loses a heartbreaker at home to Houston as the $aban circus grinds to an ugly halt - $aban learns how fast the Tide fans can turn. 35-31 Houston

I was proud of Tech, today. I really was. The boys fought back from deep adversity (3-21)and almost won. The “almost” hurts. Bennett was great - almost beat ‘em with his passes. The boy can pass. And keeping the ball on the ground so much, wore Maryland down. The familiar scenario ( run, run, run )sometimes works, and sometimes not. You never know, and that’s what’s so maddening. The Jackets have now lost the annual obligatory two games to teams not as talented as they are. Tech is learning. Too bad they had not learned enough to avoid defeats in the first half of the season. At least, at 1-3 in the ACC, we are blissfully relieved of having to worry about winning a division title, or not. That’s gone. What now? The Georgia game is a sure loss, but if Tech can contrive to win four of the six games left on the schedule, they will have scrambled back to 7-5 again, and will be headed to some kind of bowl. I’d sure hate to have the job of trying to motivate the team to fight for THAT, though.

This season has been about as bizarre as my own pre-season predictions so far. Learned prognostications are futile.

Bama fans were warned that we lacked the depth and experience on defense to go the distance in the SEC this year. While that estimation has been born out by the facts to a great extent, I have been shocked to see our thin red line on defense outperform our offensive unit. It seems as if the guys are trying to carry practice to the field on Saturday rather than playing the game with reckless abandon and just having fun. I hope that this situation will improve as the Crimson Tide settles into the new coaching staff and schemes and gets a little more comfortable with their identity.

For the moment, I am pleased to be in the relatively large contingent of SEC teams holding down the second place spot behind LSU with only one conference loss.

Say what you will about college football — you can’t honestly say that it is boring.

RTR!!!
