Five burning questions
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Five burning questions as we head into the weekend
1. How many times will Georgia pass against UT? If you do the math, it shouldn’t be many. In four games, Tennessee has given up 753 yards rushing on 146 attempts, or an average of almost 5.2 yards every time an opponent has run the ball. Take out the Southern Mississippi game (32 carries, 90 yards), and Tennessee has given up 663 yards rushing (221 average) against California (230), Florida (255), Arkansas State (178). Tennessee has had a week off to work on its running defense, but I’m not sure the talent is there to fix the problem.
2. Can Kentucky keep it rolling tonight against South Carolina? This will easily be the best defense Kentucky has faced this season. The Gamecocks lead the nation in pass defense, giving up only 106.40 yards per game. Opponents have completed only 46.21 percent of their passes against South Carolina, which also has six interceptions. South Carolina DC Tryone Nix is good at turning up the heat on quarterbacks but Kentucky’s Andre Woodson (16 touchdowns, 1 interceptions) is special. He threw an NCAA-record 325 passes without an interception until getting picked last week against Florida Atlantic.
3. Is the Fridge really playing smash mouth? Maryland coach Ralph Friedgen has one of the best offensive minds of this generation of coaches. But he beat No. 10 Rutgers last week with a strong running game and a good defense. Keon Lattimore is averaging 106.6 yards per game and Maryland second in the ACC (behind Georgia Tech) in rushing at 176.8 per game. Should be a pretty quick game on Saturday in College Park because both guys want to keep it on the ground.
4. Which way will Clemson go? Everything that could go wrong did go wrong for Clemson last week at Georgia Tech. Now what happens to Tommy Bowden’s team? Last season Clemson started 7-1 and then fell apart. Now adversity has hit and here comes Virginia Tech to Death Valley on Saturday. Clemson has more offensive weapons and should win the game. But will they?
5. Will LSU live up to the hype? The Tigers are No. 1 in the AP poll for the first time since 1959. There hasn’t been a regular season game in Baton Rouge as big as Saturday’s meeting with Florida in a long, long time. ESPN’s College Game Day will be there and CBS is going to show it in prime time. The whole world will be watching. How will LSU handle the spotlight?
Bonus question. Every now and then I run across something a little off the beaten path of college football. When I do, I’ll throw in a bonus question.
Why is James Carville doing sports talk? He was a political strategist in the Clinton White House, where he was known for his Cajun accent and his ability to argue on just about anything. Now he’s doing sports talk on XM Satellite Radio with Luke Russert, son of NBC’s Tim Russert. According to their publicist Carville, an LSU grad, is old school on the subject of sports. Russert, a senior at Boston College, is new school. The show is “60/20 Sports” at 8 a.m. on Fridays. Carville will also be in Baton Rouge this weekend to do a pre-game show for the Florida-LSU showdown.

Tony, I agree that GA should pound the rock, but just in case UT loads the box and actually plays decent run Defense, let’s go to MoMass ! It still puzzles me why we don’t throw to him more. Go Dawgs !!

Why is James Carville doing sports talk? He needs a job? Who knows? Why did Rush Limbaugh and Dennis Miller think they could do sports? Why does Keith Olbermann think he can move from sports to commentary?
Carville and Russert are on XM and I have SIRIUS, so I won’t hear them anyway.
Smart money is on Georgia, but I still have a funny feeling about UT.
Tossup. I’m going with Kentucky because I think they want it more.
I have nothing to add here.
Clemson’s second wheel falls off this weekend.
No. But they still win.

Word out of Knoxville is TN knows GA is going to run all over them that everytime GA gets the ball, TN’s defense is not going come out on the field so GA can just go ahead and score. TN knows they have no shot at this game against the 12th ranked team in the nation so they are hoping for a quick, painless loss.

Tony,
Looking forward to your Feerless Friday Forecast. I am interested to see if you stay with your pick of UF over LSU this weekend. Personally, I believe LSU smokes them pretty bad. UFs weaknesses on O and D were exposed last week by a MARGINAL Auburn team.

Mike,
Who do you actually know in Knoxville? Nobody I’m sure. So unless you actually were there this week, you probably didn’t hear any “words” at all. With UGA’s weak O-line, you’ll see blitzing quite a bit on Saturday. Stafford’s britches will be green by Q2. The running backs will get their yards, but overall I think the UT offense is just too good. Considering what Ole Miss did against the UGA soft coverage, UT will score plenty against the dawgs D and make for a long drive back home for the pups.

Why the hoopla around the UT/GA game? Tenn has yet to beat a team with a winning record. Hello, Southern Miss lost to 0-4 Rice last night. At one point Rice led 31-7. FIRE FULMER NOW. He’s and example where numbers lie. Best winning percentage or some BS. How many NC’s and SEC’s and when.

That “weak O-line” of the Dawgs sure didn’t look weak against Alabama NOT GIVING UP A SACK! or against Ole Miss when Georgia rushed for 323 YARDS!
Stafford has only been sacked 5 or 6 times ALL SEASON!
And how can any VOL take shots at the Dawgs’ D-Fense? THE VOLS’ D is GIVING UP NEARLY 40 POINTS A GAME while UGA is giving up 17 a game! GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT!

In all honesty, Ga is the easy pick here. They’re giving up points on the road. 23 times out of 26 times that’ll win ya money…
I like Kentucky in this game. While South Carolina put it on M. State late saturday afternoon, they struggled at times both defesively and offesnsively. SC also has some key injuries on the DL and LB positions. And frankly, the cocks really don’t impress me too much. Kentucky 28-24.

UGA had better start out mixing it up and keep Tenn defense honest just like we did against bama. 2 WEEKS the Vowels have had to prepare for us, don’t think they aren’t smart enough to come up with a good defensive scheme (or a confusing one anyway). Yes, we will be able to run on them during the game, but be patient and start out with some good play calling right at the start.
Just like Auburn, Tenn has been beat by 2 really good teams and their backs are against the wall….just like Auburn. This is when a team is the most dangerous. Kind of like UGA was last year going into Auburn…our backs were against the wall and we needed to stop the bleeding. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY thought we would beat Auburn AT AUBURN, but our guys came out fighting. Got a feeling Tenn is feeling the same way we did and Auburn did last week. Anybody agree?

Why shouldn’t he do sports talk? He’s a fan, and he can. He doesn’t hold himself up as an expert the way, say, a college football columnist might.

paul,i agree,i don’t believe in the old cliche”ready to play”,any player in this league is ready, and well prepared by the coaching staff.the question is,which team will execute the plays called.the team that runs the plays the way they did in practice, keeps their heads and avoids mistakes will win.i would say uga and ut are pretty close in talent,so the team that executes will win.

Vol fans seem quiet this week… too quiet. Just hope our O-Line can handle the noise. Need to get off to a good start or it could be a long day for the dawgs. Carolina wins tonight and starts the Kentucky free fall. Hate UF but they’ll find a way to beat LSU this weekend and get back in the BCS race. Go Dawgs!

Tennessee’s defense is bad, and its offense is mediocre. If UGA wants to win and win big, they need to go with their strong suit——pound the rock on the ground, take some heat off Stafford, and let the passing game open up. The Vols pass defense is suspect, too (see, e.g., UF 59, UT 20), but UGA’s passing game suffers from a young offensive line and several receivers who can’t seem to catch when it matters most. Run-pass 60-40 early; balanced 50-50 after the Vols’ defense is back on its heels.
The $64,000 question: which of Kentucky and South Carolina is the real deal? The Wildcats certainly put up more points, but USC has a better defense, and the Evil Genius is the man with a plan. Hmmm. Recent history tells me that UK scores more points, and that usually wins games. Whoever thought that the UK-USC game might be the second best SEC game of the week? Heck, I may even watch this game. It’s like UVa playing Northwestern in a hypothetical game for the MNC … we’re clearly in uncharted waters here.
The Fridge knows how to play smash-mouth ball; question is, do the Terps have the horses to play physical ball against the big boys? It remains to be seen if Rutgers belongs among the big boys, and whether Maryland can maintain that level of physicality.
I’m going on gut instinct and general impressions. Clemson is nothing special, but Virginia Tech has not scored more than 17 points against a Division I-A opponent all season. Smart money says Clemson by 10.
LSU is good. Very good. But how good is “very good?” And compared to whom? The Tigers’ margin of victory over the Gators, if that is the outcome, will tell us a lot about how good the Tigers really are. Beat the snot out of a top-10 Gators team, and I’m a believer.
Jim Carville and Tim Russert’s son talk football, huh? Really? And people are paying to listen to this? I think it was P.T. Barnum’s quote that “there’s a sucker born every minute.” Carville should stick to campaign politics, and young Russert needs to finish his degree.

If we play the soft zone defense that Martinez seems to prefer,Ainge will cut us up. We need to put pressure on Ainge (linebacker, or safety blitzes occasionally), Fla. was all over Ainge, I hope Willie looked at and or studied the film.
Tenn knows we will run, we need to have a good game plan for our passing offense, like some deep balls to Goodman, Bailey and Henderson.

Hey “Mikey”: I agree with your assessment of the need for a “plan b” to the running attack. However, in response to your question about MoMass, the answer is two-fold: (1) Sean Bailey is healthy and has proven himself better than MoMass and (2) MoMass dropped too many passes last year. MoMass has been better this year than last as far as not dropping the ball, but again, Sean Bailey has been awesome.

Mr. College football, when UGA wins you proclaim they are on the road to the national championship or at least the SEC championship game. When Tech defeats a heavily favored team, it is because the other team self destructed.

The Vols have two big losses, and Georgia fans think it will be an easy win. Both of UT’s losses were on the road against top ten teams. UGA has beaten Western Carolina and Oklahoma State at home, very impressive, then struggled for three quarts against Ole Miss. They beat an overhyped Alabama and lost to what is now an overrated South Carolina. If we traded schedules, UGA would be 2-2, and UT would be undefeated. This feels a lot like last year when nobody thought we had a chance, and we all know what happened next. Vols win big.

First off MARK-I feel for you brotha..any man that lets a woman plan a wedding on a Saturday during college football season should reconsider and see his life down the road on the many Saturday’s to come. I will pray for you Mark that the ceromony is short and sweet and you at least catch a whole half..GOD SPEED MY UNKNOWN FREIND….now onto the topics at hand.
1.UGA should come out pounding the ball.UT has had 2 weeks to shore up and study film and be prepared..but I don’t think that is a reason to change your “core” offense.Even if UT stops the run early which they probably will…KEEP POUNDING IT…they will give way at some point…I FEAR A HUNGARY UT TEAM FIGHTING FOR THE COACHES JOB…Going to be a great game!!! GO DAWGS!!
I like Kentucky chances tonight…what a great game to watch on a Thursday night I have to add. I won’t make any predictions until the “the great Friday forcast”…but somehow I think the ol ball coach puts up enough on that weak Kentucky D to get a W.
Yes the Fridge I see is playing smash mouth….but they beat a very very very overrated Rutgers team…RUTGERS IS AND WAS WAAAYYY OVER RATED. They are a one trick pony in Rice. But I will hand it to Maryland..they beat a ranked team and have a good chance against TECH.
Clemson is on the way down. I was at the TECH/Clemson game on SAt. I was very surprised that Clemson threw as much as they did and put so much confidence in a young QB against a stout GT defense. MAtt Ryan throwing against that D…yeah I can see that…but not him. GT did do a good job of stuffing the run…but Clemson did come out throwing the ball….my above post about UGA states as I believe…pound your “core” offense even if they stop it early. This one is tough…casue VT ain’t much better on O.
This is going to be a great game… I think UF is a great team who got beat by a hungary Auburn team. UF better find a RB.. I think everyone agrees on that one. You have to like the number 1 team in the country at home…..don’t you?
I have no idea who those guys are… I just listen to 680…and don’t get paid enough to have XM radio in my car…I’m a granola guy….pretty plain.

I was very surprised at Clemson throwing the ball. They ran down our throats last year and I suspect could have this year. They dropped a huge among of balls as did Tech that should have been caught. That is the test Georgia has, can the receivers catch the ball. You can bring the horse to the water but will it drink? As for Carville, what makes a lot of people think they can do sports? 680 has some fat, lispy guy in the morning that was some kind of pop music disjockey, couldn’t make it there so they put him on a sport’s station interviewing coaches and athletes like a waiter in mid town taking orders.

I, along with most, feel the best chance for a UGA victory will be to play keep away from Ainge by pounding Brown and Moreno. Ainge has lit us up the two years he has started against us. It will be a challenge for our D to get pressure on him since they have a pretty stout O-line as coach Garner suggested. Coach Bobo please please please don’t abandon the run if it doesn’t work right away. They will be geeked up to start off in their stadium and have heard for two weeks they can’t stuff the run. Keep pounding and pounding and eventually our talent at running will win out. I hope for a great game and civility amongst all fans (wishful thinking on the latter). I pray for no injuries, and Go Dawgs!

Yes, Toby the Gamecocks are overrated. You beat LA-Lafayette, and South Carolina State. That’s even weaker than UGA’s sad non-conference schedule. Granted, you have a quality win at Georgia, but did not even belong on the field with LSU. The Gamecocks have never won an SEC championship, never won the east, and what is their record against UF, UGA and UT?
Bottom line, the SEC would have been better off adding Clemson than that wannabe football school from Columbia.

UGA/UT Game will be a good look at how well UGA adjusts. UT is still a very talented team; this is not Western Carolina. They will come out and stuff the run, daring us to pass against all the noise in Knoxville. This game will come down to adjustments, denying the big play while keeping UT’s offense off the field (read - no bend but don’t break conservative defenses) and turnovers. I guess that’s pretty obvious, but its going to be all about execution and who does it best.

Bobo is getting better each week at attacking defensive weaknesses. Last week we just wore out Ole Miss and it showed it the 4th quarter. With Lumpkin back we have three horses to ride and will pound the orange out of their “T”. Dawgs run away with it in the 4th quarter.
Kentucky may be tested early but their offense is for real. They will outscore the evil one!
Yes, the Fridge will smash the jackets in the face and the roller coaster ride of tech under Chan (please don’t leave) Gailey will continue.
This is a good question. If this is the Clemson of last year then the other wheel will fall off.
5.Yes, the LSU defense will live up to the hype. If Urban thinks he can run Tebow 20-30 times I hope they have the ambulance ready. Who is the Gator’s b/u QB anyway. We may see him before the night is over.
Bonus….politics and Clinton…let’s not go there!

Coach Bobo, there’s no way you could have game planned for the Vols; however, that’s fine with me because the way you’ve put your offense together, the Dawgs can simply take what the other team gives us. The Coaches understand it but a lot of fans don’t and that is Cutcliffe(sp)will be in a mental chess game with Stafford. As you’ve said in the past, your job is to prepare Stafford to play and so far he’s coming right along. As it’s hard to predict what the Dawgs will do the same is true about the vols…..my GUESS is that because we haven’t gone down field, they’ll put 8 in the box and try to force Ga. to throw the ball to win. Hope they do because we’ve been preparing for that to happen…..Dawgs 30-24.

Toby young, Yea Ala fans said the same, so you better wait a while and see if your team wins.
And you must be acting like the song on the radio about looking good on MY SPACE, because people with class don’t talk or act like you. So get a little madder so we can laugh a little more. If your team makes it to the SEC then good for them, but theres alot of football games left to play. So shoot that mouth off, you might end up with your foot up your a@@. But USC will not catch up with the rest of the SEC, your already to far behind.

I think we kept the ball on the ground so much this weekend so we didn’t show too much to Tenn. I wish we could have kept the onside kick in the bag too, but we needed it. I think that and the one and done against AL should be a great example of what Georgia is really made of. I think our boys are going in there with something to prove. They got their butts handed to them last year and if you don’t think our back is against the wall again this year. YOU ARE KIDDING yourselves. Tenn might think they are pushed against the wall this year, but just wait until we roll into town. I do not put is past Wille and Bobo to be conservative against Ole Miss and put the smack down on a team that they know can beat them.

Baloney, there is a more disgusting coach than the Fridge. His team is 0-5 and he resides in South Bend, IN. You can figure it out because I’ll not mention the fat turds name.

I feel pretty good about South Carolina tonight. Not quite strong enough to make it an Executive play though (which are 70% on the season).

toby young, Has I said a man with no class.
And the Gamecocks beat Georgia for the first time in five years, but I’m still a true fan and still love the Dawgs or what ever you feel you need to call them. No thanks on the tour been there and live up there so nothing new. And I have my own iron man, so I have no need to see your nasty iron C** workout room. But I will be right there with a lot of SEC fans this evening pulling for the WILDCATS. Fans like TENN, BAMA, FLA, AUBURN AND FLA STATE, and these people have alot of class. So now you can go to our iron room on MY SPACE and make yourself look good. To all the other fans, have a good season.
And the DAWGS, SIC-EM GO DAWGS!!!!!!!! Oh Yea watch out for those Wildcats, they just might surpise you. Red-heads don’t get p** they just laugh at smart a@@es. Have a wonderful day and go to your little room now.

toby young, Why is that a man thinks that he can talk to someone in the way, all women are not trash.
And there are women who really love football and know something about it. I have been a Georgia fan since I was 16 years old and I will always be a Georgia fan and I will never wear another teams colors. So if you know for sure that your team going to run the SEC East then we all want the lotto numbers too, because nobody knows what going to happen until its over. AUBURN BEAT FLA. APPL STATE BEAT MICH, SOUTH FLA BEAT WEST VA. SO I will stay a big GEORGIA FAN. GO DAWGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So far in this blog Tennesee fans have said their defense that gives up nearly 40 points a game is “just too good” and Georgia “struggled” in a 28 point win. These hillbillies aren’t good for much but danged if they don’t make me laugh.

The Puppies will get burried. Stafford will crumble, and the puppies will all leave with their heads between their legs just like in athens whimpering their pathetic way home. The dog defense against the pass is a joke. Oliver was the only chance the pups had at stopping the wind even as far as passing D is considered. UT 56 Puppies 17! Get used to finishing 4th in the SEC East. Lasy year wasn’t a fluke, it will happen again in ‘07!
GO VOLS! (and yes we wish Fulmer was fired)

Toby, you are right, tonight will be the dawning of a new day in the SEC. After Kentucky gets done whipping your Lamecock a*, they will be the team to beat in the East. Dawn of a new Day in the SEC indeed!

Dawgs have a tough one coming up in Obnoxiousville, but if they stick to the run and blitz Ainge often they have a good chance.
Just wondering has anyone else noticed a wide open receiver #16. From my seats in Sanford Durham seems to get open everytime he lines up, but never gets the toss. MoMass and Bailey are great and very speedy but opponents seem to key on them and Chandler keeps dropping the ball. Why is Stafford so insistant on throwing them every pass?

Mr. Barnhart,
Regarding Carville, he was often a guest on Tony Kornheiser’s sports talk show in DC in the 1990s. He was great at predicting college football games and loved to talk about the SEC. I don’t know how he hooked up with Kornheiser back then. Also, he once jogged past me on the National Mall in the late 1990s and when I said “Geaux Tigers”, he stopped and talked to me about SEC football for about 5 minutes.

1.UGA loses to Phil’s Vols and Vick loses another bet on a dog.
2.The only one fat enough to play smashmouth on Maryland is Ralph. They won’t match up and Dwyer is the difference maker in this game.
3.Tebow wishes he was at that wedding w/ Mark or celebrating Bamadon’s wife’s birthday with him. LSU bangs up Florida.
4.I just threw up in my mouth and it smelled better than that crap coming out of Carver and Russert’s mouth….sports???? come on….

Watching the chickens and kittens - these guys look like garbage. #11? Really.. #8..Really. I admit we lost to the kittens last year and I will also admit that the chickens won in Athens ( ist time in 5) and I’m not even going to research the last time the kittens beat us! But really, these two teams look like traditional SC and KY - terrible. Whoever wins? Whatever, they both are terrible. By the way, Dawgs should/need to explode this weekend and bury the hillbillies. Run, run, and run some more.

Live in denial all you want, MDAWG24. The “terrible” poultry walked out of Athens with a W, and the Dawgs will have to win out to have a prayer. With those Florida and UT games away, I’d say the really “terrible” thing is your chance of making much noise in the SEC this year. Given your record against Florida the past 15 years or so, yep, I’d say it doesn’t look too good at all for the pups. Really.

Vols biggest fear is that Dawgs will go mental on them. It’s tough cleaning out all tose coloring books from the dressing room after this game. Should be a good one with two very mediocre teams!
