This could be Fulmer’s biggest game—ever

Just one man’s opinion:

1. This could be Phillip Fulmer’s biggest game-ever: Not to put any extra pressure on Tennessee as the Vols prepare to host Georgia, but this game looks like one that could define the future of Tennessee football under Phillip Fulmer. A loss at home puts the Vols at 0-2 in the SEC. The folks who are already upset with Fulmer and the direction of the program will have a whole new round of ammunition. The folks who support Fulmer will be looking at a 2-3 football team that still has to play Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas and Kentucky. I still say that Fulmer will be the head coach at Tennessee next year. But the quality of his life in Knoxville is not going to be helped if the Vols lose to Georgia.

2. Alabama is about where they should be: The Crimson Tide looked like a tired football team against Florida State. After two physically and emotionally draining games against Arkansas and Georgia it had to be tough to play a complete game against a team that had had a week off. I thought going into the season that Alabama would split that four-game stretch of Vanderbilt, Arkansas, Georgia, and Florida State. They will be 5-2 when Tennessee comes to Tuscaloosa on Oct. 20.

3. Auburn had better not relax: The Tigers are coming off their biggest win of the year at Florida. All week people have been telling them they are good-the same people who were dog cussing them two weeks ago. Now they are going to play Vanderbilt at 11:30 in the morning. The team is going to wear throwback uniforms because they are honoring the 1957 national championship team. Vanderbilt is well coached. This is just a warning. Seems like a lot of distractions to me.

4. Florida relies too much on Tebow: Tim Tebow is a wonderful athlete. But he is playing football in the Southeastern Conference and by definition that comes with some risk. He was magnificent Saturday night when he brought the Gators back from 17-3 to tie the game with Auburn. But he carried the ball 27 times against Ole Miss and 19 times against Auburn. The defenses get bigger and meaner each week. Tebow cannot carry the ball 20 times against LSU and not pay some kind of physical price for it. Coach Urban Meyer has to find another option at crunch time.

5. Kentucky’s season will be defined in the next three weeks: The Wildcats go to South Carolina Thursday night and if they win that one-and that’s’ a big if-they get LSU and Florida at home. Do we think they will win them all? Probably not. Could they lose all three? Absolutely. But this team is good enough to do some special things if the defense can get a stop every now and then.

Fill is a great coach UT fans.

He’s won at least 1/2 of his last 30 games hasn’t he?

Please make sure you keep him him there at least until AU plays them the next 2 times the series renews.

I hope we carve up the Great Pumpkin this year. Payback is hell.

You forgot to add, one more loss and Saban is history. Bama fans won’t tolerate this kind of losing.

Auburn is probably the scariest right now. Hard to believe that they fell so far so fast yet come back to compete like that against UF.

Tebow will pay the price if he keeps up this pace of doing so much. And you are correct that this weekend he may be cahsing out. Rumor has it he threw the bones to distract the dogs at the impound lot when his room mate got arrested.

Kentucky will lose. Just don’t know who to or how many. Maybe not us if we don’t get a complete game going with somebody for 60 minutes.

Roswell Ed…Phil’s one saving grace is he got us 2 SEC titles and a NC ring. Other than Urban, Saban, and Spurrier, no other coach in the SEC can say they have a ring. I don’t believe Ears has one yet?

All Stafford has to do is manage the game and not turn the ball over. Our defense is horrible. Kentucky is in the top 10 and UT is looking foreward to basketball season. What has the world come to?

There has to be some pillow for a coach who wins a national title and some SEC titles. Phil is MR. UT, if they get rid of him, fahgetaboutit, they go in the hole for 5 years and the rivalry with Vandy becomes their biggest game of the year.

As much as I hate to say it, USC dominates UK on Thursday night and we never hear from UK again until the Music City Bowl.

LSWho takes UF to the Bayou woodshed, Tebow goes down for 1 month, and the Golden Girls continue to shine.

Bama fans shut their dirty mouths and realize they are the biggest suckers in the universe…at least for 1 year; Saban comes back strong and wins the West next Fall, but for now shut it.

I know it’s looking WAY down the line, but I hope Tebow keeps taking all the snaps…that way when FSU goes to Gainesville, with our “in-your-face defense”, we can give him a good view of Florida Field!!!

All you frie the coach or this coach is in trouble people are really even more stupid than one might suspect.Tony Fulmer has played a lot of games that are bigger thn this Ga. game. You know that one of the reasons that teams lose on Saturday is that the other team practices all week too and they give scholarhsips too. If the team that is not supposed to win wins then you so called experts think tht something must be wrong with the coach. Did any of you ever play the game. Winning games is hard and looking past the game you are playing is ridiculous. You said the other day that the BCS was headed for a “mess” it will sort itself out and what is a mess anyway. The BCS will get the two best teams or at least 2 out of 3 and they will play. Let the seasons go on and quit the hot seat insanity.

I just think some loyalty to someone who has been so loyal to a school for so long is warranted. Nothing makes me more upset in college football than fans booing players (if they are booing play calling that is another issue, but how can you differentiate the boos?) and fans forgetting championships so quickly. National Titles are so hard to achieve and so rare it has to say something about the person leading the team. College football success comes in such waves (unless you are post 2000 Southern Cal) and fans want over achievement every year. I think a coaches tenure and a programs success should be reviewed over a 10 year span, rather than year to year. It is simply unreasonable.

I don’t know who else UT would get with the same enthusiasm and expert staff as Fat Phil and his band of backward hat wearing assistants.

Michigan is almost a mirror image of UT.

Dawgs rush for 250-280 yards and pass for 140 or so on only say 20 attempts, we win easy. We rush for 180 yards and pass for 140 with 40 attempts, we lose. That simple. That’s a lot of 3 and outs and UT can score. Our defense is middle of the pack SEC. WE HAVE TO RUSH THE BALL WELL !!!!!!!!!

I’m sure Johnny Majors has some interesting thoughts about Phil Fulmers loyalty…

UGA-UT: definitely a big game. I don’t know that I’d call it the biggest for either team or coach. I don’t think a loss here will send Phil packing. However I’ve got this feeling that UT bounces back this week and comes out on top, but I don’t feel strongly about it.

I have no doubt that Vanderbilt can beat Auburn if we go into the game like we did against Mississippi State. That’s the maddening thing about the Tigers; you never know which team is going to show up until mid-way through the 3rd quarter.

South Carolina is a contender. That must hurt a lot of Georgia PR people to say. We all have to die sometime and Fulmer has reached his end. Tennessee is not a contender and has not been for a while. Like the lady soccer player who was not allowed to play in the game the U.S. lost to Brazil, “this is 2007 not 2004.” We set Tennessee up as the great team of old then when Georgia goes up there and beats them easily, oh how great thou art. Get Spurrier to explain it to you, but then he has tried when he said he didn’t feel like the Georgia win was an upset. Honesty kills good PR. Those same Georgia people had the Alabama overtime victory as a watershed event for the Bulldogs, yet barely noticed a lowly ACC team thumping Alabama the next week. Have it your way but for every Tennessee paper tiger you sleigh there is a real opponent Georgia can’t get by like USC or Florida. Auburn is one of the few teams to run the SEC undefeated with their present coach. I think they will be ready for Vandy. Auburn is a team that beats great opponents like Kansas State, loses in overtime to South Florida and then plays Mississippi State on one of the mid day games they lose every year and no one thinks they are dangerous. Georgia could win the Southern Conference and get the nod for a national championship because the press is blowing smoke while Auburn wins the SEC championship and goes undefeated and is ignored because some so call expert thinks they don’t have it. Georgia wins by 21 at Tennesee and still loses to Florida and Auburn in “upsets”.

Tony

This game doesn’t even come close to Fulmer’s biggest ever. Possibly a defining game as far as his TN job is concerned but I don’t think so. I’ve peeked at some Vol blogs and they’re not to happy with him about 50/50 on whether he has a job no matter how many wins or losses he gets or who he beats.

Face it the Vols are down after the Cal and FL shellacking. Rarely has Fulmer and the Vols bounced back from disappointing early season starts. They do not have the talent to compete in the SEC this year and the Vol nation knows it. I have a hard time believing vol fans will dump a successful NC coach for a couple off and mediocre years. Wait a sec…..forget all I just said. These are Vol fans……LOL….j/k

I know of no other way to unload him. He was good once, but he’s grown stale. For goodness sakes, even Munson’s finally stepping back and if that HOMER can realize it, so can the great ORANGE PUMPKIN. Hire the coach from USF and lets get going!

What is with the obsession by sports writers for everything to be the “best ever”. The “best team ever”, the “biggest game ever”, the “best player ever”?

As if the Fiesta Bowl for the Nat’l Title, or the multiple SEC Title games Fulmer has coached were less meaningful. Ridiculous.

A young UGA team lost to SC. Simple as that. Neither team is the same team they showed 4 weeks ago. Both showing much improvement But UGA was the better team in that game and came out on the low side of the score. Seems to me you read too much PR

I see! The chew’em up and spit them out mentality. Trust me, I have no love for Fulmer but the man has won your school a National Championship and on that reason alone should be allowed an opportunity to step down gracefully. I’ve never liked him but I’ve always feared him as a coach. He’s a good recruiter and he generally always keeps good coaches on the staff and he’s a decent X and O’s guy himself.

Most people can completely understand if the Vol nation doesn’t believe he is the coach for future. What will be done will be done but where’s the respect?

UT DEFENSIVE PLAYER HAS GUARANTEED A WIN OVER GEORGIA. This was broadcast over a sportstalk radio in Knoxville this week. I am trying to confirm the name. He stated Tennessee OWNS GEORGIA once again (if they win, it will be hard to argue that). I am thinking UT is going to give GA a hard time, but whoever loses, the season will be over for them as far as any hopes of a New Year’s Bowl Game. Also, Richt cannot afford to continue losing to Fla, SC, UT, etc. He needs to win this game to keep the naysayers at bay.

Hey, ATL_orange, not only is Fulmer fat, so is the rest of your coaching staff, most of your players and most of the women wearing orange in your stadium.

Dogs start out quicker against TN than in past weeks, struggle in the third but finish with a burst. UGA 34 - TN 17 and Fulmer runs out of the stadium before the end of the game to grab a few Big Macs and a shake.

First off, whoever said UGA was the better team against USC that night didn’t watch the same game I did.

The SEC East has been turned completely upside down. Whoever wins the Thursday game between USC and Kentucky will be in the driver’s seat to go the Dome in December. Yes, that’s right. UGA will lose in Knoxville, and Florida will lose in Death Valley. That will give each of them two losses in conference play. Vandy won’t be a factor (but will be a spoiler.) Tennessee will lose the rest of theirs later.

Mark my words right now. Either USC or Kentucky will be representing the East in the SEC Championship Game.

Phil is fat. Got it. We all know he can destroy a bucket of fried chicken just like he destroyed our undefeated season last year. The DAWGS need to stay focused. Knoxville is a tough place to play and we need to be precise with our game. Mental toughness will be equally imperative as physical ability on Saturday.
