Georgia Tech will beat Clemson

We were 8-2 last week because Georgia Tech lost to Virginia and Penn State lost to Michigan. But we did pick Georgia and Kentucky to win on the road. That makes the record for the season 29-11.

Here, once again, is the Fearless Friday Forecast.

1. Clemson at Georgia Tech: RB Tashard Choice returns to action and that makes Georgia Tech a much better football team. A year ago Clemson just steam rolled the Yellow Jackets 31-7 But after a tough loss at Virginia last week, Georgia Tech’s backs are to the wall. How will they respond? Tech slows down the running game and scores a late touchdown to win. Georgia Tech 28, Clemson 24:

2. Ole Miss at Georgia: What Georgia can’t do is sag after a big emotional win at Alabama last week. Ole Miss doesn’t have a lot of weapons, but they do play hard under Ed Orgeron. Georgia also can’t be looking ahead to next week’s game at Tennessee. The Bulldogs need to start fast and put the Rebels away early. Georgia 31, Ole Miss 14.

3. Florida State vs. Alabama in Jacksonville: Florida State has had a week off while Alabama is coming off a very tough loss in overtime to Georgia. Here is the difference in these two teams. Florida State is still trying to figure out who it is and what it can do. Alabama knows exactly what it can do and this team will not quit. This will be a 60-minute and therefore the edge goes to the Crimson Tide. Alabama 20, Florida State 17.

4. Auburn at Florida: The Gators scored 59 on the last SEC team (Tennessee) to come to The Swamp. But Auburn has a legitimate SEC defense and usually finds a way to make these kind of games competitive. Here is a fun fact: Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville has won eight of his last nine games against teams ranked in the Top 10. Won’t happen today. Florida 24, Auburn 17.

5. Mississippi State at South Carolina: Coach Steve Spurrier will start redshirt freshman Chris Smelley at quarterback in place of Blake Mitchell. But Smelley had better keep an eye out of DE Titus Brown, who is a legitimate All-SEC player. South Carolina needs to be careful with this game, especially with Kentucky coming to Williams-Brice Stadium next Thursday. If this stays an ugly, low-scoring game, Mississippi State can win. Give the edge to the Head Ball Coach. South Carolina 27, Mississippi State 17.

6. North Carolina at Virginia Tech: This will be the third straight start for Virginia Tech freshman quarterback Tyrod Taylor and will serve as his last tune-up for next week’s trip to Clemson. He has completed 24 of 44 passes in two games. North Carolina quarterback T.J. Yates (Pope) needs to bounce back from a four-interception performance last week against South Florida. Unfortunately for Yates, the Virginia Tech defense is better. Virginia Tech 31, North Carolina 10.

7. California at Oregon: This is the best game on the board on Saturday. Should be a shootout and the winner gets to chase Southern Cal in the Pac-10. Oregon’s Autzen Stadium is a tough place to play and quarterback Dennis Dixon is a tough guy to stop. I like the Ducks in a mild upset. Oregon 35, California 31.

8. Penn State at Illinois: The Nittany Lions will come out a little flat after a disappointing loss to Michigan last week. Illinois coach Ron Zook has been building toward this game since the got to Champaign. Illinois quarterback Juice Williams is due for a breakout game and he’ll get it against Penn State in an upset. Illinois 24, Penn State 23.

9. Notre Dame at Purdue: Purdue has suffered a lot of pain at the hands of their state rivals over the years. Now the Boilermakers are 4-0 and the Fighting Irish are 0-4. If Joe Tiller and the gang get a chance, they are going to put up a pretty big number against Notre Dame. Let’s try Purdue 42, Notre Dame 21.

10. Baylor at Texas A&M: The Aggies got embarrassed last week at Miami and should bounce back. But there is some bad blood between Baylor coach Guy Morris and Texas A&M coach Dennis Franchione. This will be a battle but I give the edge to the Aggies at home. Texas A&M 24, Baylor 17.

Love the column Tony but Oregon is favored by six at home. It would be an upset if Cal wins.

You can go ahead and set two things in stone:

(1) GT will not score 28 on Clemson, unless Clemson turns the ball over 3+ times AND GT gets a special teams TD;

and

(2) The “Fearless Friday” prediction for GT winning is the kiss of death. See, Clemson/FSU; GT/BC; GT/UVA.

I’ll enjoy watching the game tomorrow with 25,000 others in orange. Thanks for the “Goldout” promotion, GT — it really helped a lot of Clemson fans get tickets to the game.

BTW - If Georgia can just maintain their fire throughout the game, they should be able to handle Ole Miss and not show too much to TN for next week. A vanilla scheme should be more than sufficient as long as they execute and play hard.

UGA will barely win this one. As always, they will play flat, emotionless, and will not be ready(see my previous rants about CMR not being able to really get the Dawgs up for a team they should squash) So, once again, we will squeak by, let’s try UGA 27 Ole Miss 24. Last second FG by Coutu to win.

Dawgs will win, but will have to play from behind to do it. They will still have their PJ’s on under their uniforms and be thinking about all the good looking women in Athens and think , holly crap, it’s late third Quarter, we better play. Dawgs 28-24.

Florida State has had TWO WEEKS to prepare for this one. We need this game more than AL does and I think our guys will step up big. FSU plays well in J-ville (See ‘05 ACC Championship game vs. VT) and I think they will eek out a win, 17-13.

Let’s call Week Five of the 2007 season “Gut Check Week.” My answers to Tony … .

  1. I agree with “Thanks for the Predictions.” I’m not sure if the Tech offense can score four touchdowns against a decent Division I defense. However, it still remains to be seen how good Clemson really is.

  2. UGA fears an Ole Miss team with heart if not the same level of talent, and the fans fear a let-down after UGA’s OT win over Bama. But what about Ole Miss——aren’t they prone to a let-down after their near-miss against the Gators? Prediction: UGA wins easier than expected in slopfest that everyone will recognize after the fact as a double let-down game.

  3. Bama believes; FSU is having a crisis of confidence. Prediction: SEC 5th team over ACC 5th team in the Gator Bowl.

  4. Tigers defense struggles mightily on the road, and slows, but does not stop the Tebow express. Prediction: Gators by 13.

  5. C**-a-doodle-doo! The Evil Genius and his ‘Cocks rebound from their loss to LSU. Prediction: USC by 10, a 2-1 SEC record, and a temporary 2nd place in the SEC East.

‘C** warning: no looking ahead to the suddenly relevant USC-UK game.

  1. Yawn. Another mediocre ACC team beats another miserable ACC team. Prediction: A game made for a Jefferson Pilot broadcast; no one outside the Commonwealth of Virginia or the State of North Carolina watches.

  2. They play football in Oregon? Who knew? Prediction: Bears of Cal-Berkley consume the Ducks in their own Oregon pond.

  3. This is still a Joe Pa Penn State team, and Illinois is coached by the very average game-day coach Ron Zook. Prediction: Joe Pa out-coaches the Zookster by 10.

  4. This game would only be relevant if Notre Dame joined the Big Ten and contributed to Purdue’s conference win-loss record. Fortunately for the Boilermakers, a win over the Irish still counts as another Division I-A W to gain bowl eligibility. Prediction: PU beats ND by 17, and NBC television execs and lawyers begin to review their early termination rights under their exclusive broadcast rights contract with ND. (BTW, Tony, the only justification for continuing to cover ND this season is that you have a morbid fascination with train wrecks.)

  5. Good grief, this game is hardly relevant in the Big XII, let alone the Southeastern region. Prediction: the team from Texas wins. yawn

Funny how you said in your blog earlier that if the Tech game was in the high 20s, then Tech wouldn’t win. Yet, now you predict a 28-24 win by Tech. Interesting, I guess they don’t need to play ugly anymore and win a 14-10 game? Nice contradiction. Clemson rolls in this one. James Davis is a Atlanta boy and will run through Tech’s ‘great’ defensive scheme ala 2006.

WhiteAndGold, your input sounds less like a believable prediction than and expression of exasperation and a prayer spoken out loud by a frustrated Georgia Tech fan. God may take in interest in college football, but I’m betting he doesn’t pick sides. He’s got bigger fish to fry. Pray for peace in the Middle East, and maintain an even strain regarding college football.

Amazing that Chan was a QB’s coach & Offense coordinator in the NFL…

Yet he cannot coach up Reggie Ball.. & after one bowl game everyone in the UGA Tech camp thought Taylor Bennett was the answer.. He’s actually regressed as a QB..

Tech fanz can get all up & excited about the Klemsun game.. Bottom line, Tununa (sp?) will have no answer to their 2 headed monster running game…

Wow. Tech fans are in panic mode. This is a must win for GT. I think they will be up for it. BUT, James Davis has been waiting for this game in Atlanta for 2 years. If Choice is 100% it could even be closer. Clemson needs to find the gaps in the 5-3-3 defense from Tech. Look for alot of screen plays to the backs, and tight-ends to exploit the 2nd line. My pick: Clemson 28 Ga Tech 24. GO TIGERS

By Talentsearch

September 28, 2007 12:16 PM | Link to this

white and gold, you are an idiot. While the jury is still out on Clemson, Tech’s two wins came against an awful ND team and Samford, while losing to Virginia team that got trounced by Wyoming and barely beat a horrible NC team. Right now, Tech is a one trick pony. Stop the run and you stop Tech. Bennett has yet to show he’s the upgrade over Ball that you guys made him out to be, esp. w/o CJ to throw to. As far as Clemson having no talent, that’s just so stupid it’s not worth responding to. Espn still shows the clip of CJ Spiller juking P. Wheeler out of his jock in last years national tv embarrassment. Lastly, Tech couldn’t score 50 points on Clemson in the last four years combined! I gave credit to most Tech fans for being educated, but I may have been wrong. Come back when you have something worthy to contribute, rookie.

Georgia’s defense is better than Florida’s right now. A blasphemous proposition for some I’m sure, but the facts are the facts. Ole Miss will not be able to score enough points to pose a serious threat to Georgia. Look for Stafford to pad the stats against a pathetic pass defense.

Agree that Tech will beat Clemson. This is the perfect set-up. How many times have we seen people shovel dirt on Tech only for them to bounce back with an upset win? And conversely, how many times have we seen everyone praise Clemson only to watch them screw the pooch against an ostensibly lesser team? Tech by 7.

Hope you’re right about the Dawgs. It doesn’t seem like we’re taking Ole Miss lightly, and if that’s the case, we should win fairly easily.

You sir are the idiot. Clemson is the epitome of choke. You cannot handle our running game. Hell, apparently you could handle a directional Louisiana school’s running game. Its going to be a long day for your Tigers buddy, sorry. There is NO way Tech will lose this game.

I have all the respect in the world for Mr. Football’s knowledge of the game, but I can barely see my Tech bobble heads over all the smoke coming from my Ramblin Wreck.

This Tech team would need a near perfect effort all season to win at least 4 more games, and perfection may not even be enough to beat this Clemson team.

Clemson’s a lot like Tech, they usually find a way to ruin a great season, but Bowden is a better College Coach than Gailey and he technically out-recruits Gailey year over year. The depth at Clemson probably pulls away from a tired Tech team in the 2nd half, but I’ll still cheer for the brave and bold, or at least the white and gold on Saturday at the flats. Go Tech!!

Whit and Gold-You are the dumbest person to ever post in these blogs in the history of computers and keyboards and blogs.

1.GT does not get handled in this game. They lose…but by only 2. Tech plays tough because of last years horrible display…but they miss a FG late and the peril continues on the flats. GT-16 Clemson 18

  1. UGA should jusr run the ball 60 times. This game will be tons closer than anyone thinks. Miss. is super tough and very hungry for a win. UGA plays well enough to win, and Mareno is back to back SEC Freshman of the week UGA-22 Ole Miss 14

  2. FSU has no idea what is going on. Alabama is getting better and will be p** about last week. Why does Weatherford continue to start? Is “X” Lee that bad??? Good Game but Bama pulls out a nail biter Bama-17 FSU-13

  3. Auburn makes this one closer then people think as well. Tebow is a complete beast but not as much a beast as last week. Auburn will try and make a huge statement and restart the season…but Cox might be the worst Senior QB in the country….Gators win close one…but not that close…Gators-31 Tigers-17

  4. My upset…Miss St. and Sly Croom pull it out in the lowest scoring game of the year. Ol Ball coach now calls his whole team stiffs instead of just his defense..Miss makes laste FG and the dream season continues for them….Miss-16 SC-14

  5. Wow…..I guess after N.C. got destroyed by S.Florida they wil lbe looking to bounce back….no way guys…they get hit again. VT-31 N.C.-13

  6. Oregon comes up big with the spread O. Dixon is tough….and the D is underrated. Cal. comes back to make it a score game. Ducks-37 Cal-31

  7. Illinois wins. Zooker puts them on as top story for Sunday morning ESPN for upset special..other than Miss. St. over SC. I just don’t like PEnn ST. play calling…WAY TO CONSERVATIVE…Illinios kicks 5FG’s. Illinois- Lions-14

  8. I wouldn’t watch Notre Dame play if my boss promised me that raise I never got to watch it….I would like a match up with them and Temple to settle the score as worst team ever. I don’t know crap about Purdue…..but you don’t need to. Purdue37-ND-10

Best game of the week will not even be on TV here, Cal @ Oregon. Whoever has the ball last might win that game. GA is impossible to predict in these kind of games. Here’s hoping some of the Dawg fans are right and the UGA players took note of the close call that FL had with Ol’ Miss, and so take the Rebs seriously. Baylor and A&M?!?!? C’mon, Tony, you’re better than that. I think the vast majority of Bama fans are over “Midnight Moves” Franchione. The elder Bowden and Joe Pa continue their chase to the bottom (that’s a joke, kind of, folks) as they both take another loss on the chin this week, though I do wonder how much it would bother Bowden to lose to his beloved Alabammy. Purdue by 24—-nothing will be sweeter than seeing Notre Dame at 0-8 going into their game with Navy. And on a sidenote, my AZ Cats will end up 1-11, maybe 2-10 at best. Mike Stoops gets fired—-any one out there need a great defensive coordinator who just couldn’t make it as a head coach?

Mark it down, Taylor Bennett runs for his life when he tries to throw. Tigers pic 2 and the Clemson offense keeps on chuggin.

25,000 Climpsun fans in the house? There are only 55,000 seats at Bobby Dodd. 40,000 of them will be GT fans in gold. Where are the extra orange fans gonna sit? Get real and stop being silly. The 15,000 taters will be in the North stands and in the corners where they belong.

Oh, and also, get ready for a long night.

Tony that is a gutsy pick on the tech over Clemson upset.

I don’t think this is so much a pivotal game for tech as it is Chan. If tech loses, they will likely get six wins at best. If they lose to UGA again (7 in a row) and muster a 6 win season… there will be a lot of howling.

tech seems to put up with mediocrity pretty well, but I think an 07 campaign like that will do Gailey in.

Go GT Go! The tigers are all pumped up after their victory of flat FSU and, hummm…who were those other teams that they have beat….oh yeah, I guess NCS would be the only semi-worthy team of mentioning. Maybe if they would not drop meaningful teams like Pitt from their schedule they might be playing a real division 1A schedule. I mean come on guys….Maryland, NCState, Duke, Central Michigan, Furman…There are only 3 real teams you are playing this season and those are VT (who was crushed bad already and are far from a superpower), BC (which may be the real deal) and USC (which will beat you bad if they can just make it through their #2 toughest schedule in the nation). So go ahead and pound your chest like you usually do and keep playing the small boys and think you are hot stuff. I hope GT pops a huge hole in your bubble and then we can all hear everyone crying that it is all Tommy’s fault again.

I agree with UGA over Ole Miss but strongly disagree with Tech over Clemson. I could be and sometimes am wrong but I don’t see it being over this pick. The game I am ready for is tonight between West Virginia and USF. On my pick sheet I went with WV but I would not be suprised if USF slips in a right hook for the knockout. I guess time will tell. Back to my DAWGS, If they will remain focused on both sides of the ball for a full 60, there is no way Ole Miss will match up with them. I hope CMR decides to put the pedal to the metal and drive off. Leave no doubts who the better team is. I don’t know about any of you but I am so sick of hearing about USC and the Pac-10!!! The Pac-10 may have potentially 3 strong teams in the conference and each maybe only having two tough games per year. Other than that, the Pac-10 is a joke of a conference. Everytime I turn on tv it’s USC this and USC that. Please tell me who they have played to make them look so impressive. I wish for one year they had to run an SEC schedule. They get pre-season ranked number one and just sit there because there is nobody to knock them off. If they survive their (maybe two) toughies then here come the accolades of how good they are. You could potentially have a few stronger teams under them in the polls who have played a much tougher schedule but will never reach the top because those buzzards sit there and feed off the wounded. They make me sick!!! Plus, no conference championship game. See, the SEC has a championship game and it usually ends up hurting someone close to the top who could clearly beat USC. Another thing “All hail the Big-10”. Yea right! Last year it was Ohio State this and that because of a pathetic conference but we see what happened when they ran into UF. Troy Smith sure didn’t look like a Heisman in that game did he? Another thing for thought, Ohio State is 0-5 against SEC teams. What would this tell someone? This is another reason why I would not give out the Heisman Trophy until season end. The reason is because normally a bowl game will match teams pretty fairly. This shows what a heisman candidate is made of. I know this was not really even in any relation to the blog but I had to vent!

toby,

Who said that the number of fans = win?

I really don’t know who will win but history says this will not be a blowout by Climpson and TECH plays well in situations like this. My prediction: TECH takes it at home and it has nothing to do with the number of cars vs. tractors in the parking decks.

Nice stretch though.

Tony Barnhart knows football. I think the only misfire is Cal will beat Oregon but anything west of the Mississippi is another sport anyway. Cal handled La. Tech which is one of those teams where the name doesn’t match what you are getting. There are no easy wins unless it is someone like Duke and I’m not sure they are not coming out of their coma. Don’t be putting La. Tech on your schedule anytime soon for homecoming or a bowl win. They are about a year away from hurting somebody, just like Central Florida, South Florida and a few others have done.

Also, you are way off on the GT victory. That’s not gonna happen. GT is just not a good team. I don’t believe for one minute that Choice is healthy enough to make a difference in the game.

First of all, Clemson has too many offensive weapons for Ga Tech’s defense, and secondly, Clemson’s defense is too fast and dominant to let Ga Tech score that many points against us. Lastly, I don’t take a major newspaper’s sportswriter too seriously if he doesn’t realize that “steamrolled” is one word. Clemson, ‘82 and ‘86.

Tony Barnhart & AJC Editorial Staff, Please immediately block the person posting under the handle “Jesus H Christ” and remove his posts. I understand your bias in favor of free speech, even that delivered in extremely poor taste, but this is clearly over the line of common decency. Will you tolerate the use of obscene sexual references? Four-letter profanity? The use of the N-word and other racially and religiously charged epithets and hate speech? There is no reason to tolerate blasphemous religious references on a sports blog. Your lazy editorial staff needs to quit hiding behind your misunderstanding of “free speech” and the First Amendment and you need to start policing your blogs like virtually every other major on-line publication in America. You are providing a forum for incitement, and it is irresponsible and disgraceful by any standard of professional journalism.

Sheesh. I’m an SEC football guy, and normally wouldn’t give a rat’s backside about an ACC football game (outside of UGA-GT, UF-FSU, USC-CU, and the occasional SEC-vs.-ACC bowl match-up). But after reading the obnoxious, juvenile and over-the-top comments posted by Clemson fans over the last two days, I gotta say that I am now cheering for Tech this weekend. As Tim Wilson said: “Paris Hilton could fck up a county fair.” Likewise, Clemson will ALWAYS fck up a promising season, this week or next.

I have a great idea! Let’s have a joint reunion of the 1980 UGA team and the 1981 Clemson team. Let them play each other endlessly. Then the fans of both schools can touch themselves and be happy until the end of time.

Tommy Bow Wow Den,

With all due respect, Spiller and Davis are very good RB’s but the best and I dare say best RB’s IMHO are Darren McFadden at Arkansas and Michael Hart at Michigan. Now having said this if I was a coach and had the opportunity to get Spiller and/or Davis as my RB’s I would be very happy as both are tremendous RB’s just not quite in McFadden or Hart’s league though.

Predictions:

GA vs Ole Miss- GA in a very close game

GT vs Clemson- history says GT is better than they have played the last 2 weeks and Clemson isn’t as good as they have looked so far. But I think Clemson will win even though I will be pulling for the Jackets as they are my second favorite team.

AL vs FSU- Hard to get a handle on this one- I think AL will win because FSU has too many issues on offense i.e. very poor OL , dropped passes and very poor QB play.

SC vs. Miss ST- I think Miss ST will win in an upset because SC is playing a RSFreshman at QB, Jaspar Brinkley, this team’s leader hurt, SC played a very good game last week against LSU but still lost convincingly. They will be looking ahead to Kentucky this Thursday. Miss. ST has a pretty good defense as they played LSU even except for offensive turnovers, they have been steadily improving thus that is why they beat Auburn and are 3-1. Auburn vs FL- This could be another upset but I think the Gators will win because they had their letdown last Saturday against Ole Miss and they are looking for some revenge for last year’s only loss to Auburn.

As for the rest of Tony’s picks I don’t have any interest in any of them except the Calf. vs Oregon match up which could be the best or worst game this weekend. Both teams have explosive offenses, special teams and have talent on defense but have a history of haveing letdowns. This game being at Oregon is the only reason I think Oregon will win.

Go Dawgs and Go Jackets
