The Fearless Friday Forecast

We were 7-3 in last week’s Fearless Friday Forecast thanks to less than inspiring performances by Georgia, Auburn, and, of course, Michigan. That gives us a 13-7 record over the first two weeks. Let’s see if we can get to eight wins this week.

1. Boston College at Georgia Tech: Okay. The preliminaries are over and it’s time for these two teams to play some big boy football. This will be the first road game for new BC coach Jeff Jagodzinski and his staff. Georgia Tech QB Taylor Bennett is going to have to make a couple of plays against a defense that is stacked against the run. He will. Georgia Tech 24, Boston College 21.

2. Western Carolina at Georgia: The weaknesses on this Georgia team-and there are several-were exploited last week by South Carolina’s Evil Genius. But today’s game is about working on those things that will be necessary to win at Alabama one week hence. And that is running the football to set up the play action pass. Look for Matthew Stafford to make some big plays in order to give Alabama something to think about. Georgia 45, Western Carolina 7.

3. Tennessee at Florida: Tennessee has played a tougher early schedule (at California, Southern Miss) and that should help the Vols as they go to the Swamp. Florida has a lot of speed and a lot of weapons but has yet to see a good defense. If Tennessee can run the football, Phillip Fulmer and the boys have a chance. I just get the sense that Urban Meyer’s been holding back on his true Tim Tebow package of plays. Florida 28, Tennessee 17.

4. Arkansas at Alabama: Logically, Arkansas should win this game. The Hogs have two of the nation’s best running backs (Darren McFadden, Felix Jones) and Alabama’s weakness is up front on defense. But Alabama fans have been pointing to this game since Nick Saban became head coach in January. The Crimson Tide is going to be pumped up and is going to find a way to confuse Arkansas QB Casey Dick. Alabama 17, Arkansas 16:

5. Louisville at Kentucky: There will be two great quarterbacks in this game in Brian Brohm of Louisville and Andre Woodson of Kentucky. Both defenses have been known to struggle. There will be a bunch of big plays in this game and Kentucky is due for an upset. Kentucky 35, Louisville 31.

6. Miss. State at Auburn: Auburn coach Tommy Tuberville was preaching patience after the Tigers lost to South Florida last week. Auburn is pretty good on defense but the offense is hurting because of a young offensive line and the fact that RB Brad Lester (academics) can’t get on the field. A word of advice to the Auburn offense: make sure you block Mississippi State DE Titus Brown. Auburn 27, Miss. State 10.

7. Florida State at Colorado: Colorado is not very good but the Seminoles have not been world beaters in the first two weeks of this season. RB Antone Smith suffered a concussion last week against UAB and his ability to be effective in this game is anything but certain. I’ve just got a feeling that Florida State is ready to take a step towards being a good football team again. We’ll see. I could be wrong. Florida State 27, Colorado 17.

8. Southern Cal at Nebraska: Southern Cal has not been to Nebraska since 1969 and the Trojans arrive in Lincoln needing some style points. Why? Because last week while USC was off, LSU and Oklahoma made a strong case for being ranked in the top two. The Trojans need to remind the voters why they are No. 1. Southern Cal 31, Nebraska 17.

9. Ohio State at Washington: With Michigan taking the gas, Ohio State might just actually be good enough to win the Big Ten again. After two average performances against Youngstown State and Akron, the Buckeyes will learn a lot about their team by going to Husky Stadium, where Tryone Willingham is looking like a better coach than the guy who replaced him at Notre Dame. Ohio State 21, Washington 17.

10. Notre Dame at Michigan: I don’t know why we care about a pair of 0-2 teams but we do. Michigan proved you can lose to the same team (Appalachian State) twice as the hangover was still there when Oregon embarrassed the Wolverines in the Big House. Notre Dame, however, does not have the athletes on offense that Appalachian State and Oregon possess (hard to believe I just wrote that.) Michigan 24, Notre Dame 20.

At lunch we also questioned why anyone even cared about the ND-UM game. Conclusion: we don’t.

Miss. State looked better than expected in the first half of the LSU game and Auburn has looked worse than expected in both of their games so far. Tuberville better find a match to light a fire under these guys or it could get embarassing.

I think Ark vs. Bama is a toss-up. Being the Auburn grad that I am, I’ll go with the Razorbacks. But not by much.

There’s been a lot of talk about a) Patriot video-gate, and b) the double standard of the Notre Dumb brain trust in the treatment of Ty vs Weiselsausage.

These two topics are very related. Weis has been touted as the offensive mastermind behind the Patriot dominance. Judging by the results of the Patriots run, it would be logical to buy into the Weis self-hype.

But how much of a genius would you have to be if Brady knew what the defense was going to do on every play? The Golden Dummers are shaking in their collective boots over this one. None of them will admit it publicly, but they gotta be wondering if the Patriot run was due to genius or trickery…..

“The weaknesses on this Georgia team-and there are several-were exploited last week by South Carolina’s Evil Genius.”

TB, if I hear that one more time…

SS didn’t “exploit” UGA, they exploited themselves. SS had nothing to do with Stafford, unpressured, over throwing wide open WR’s nor did SS have anything to do with those same WR’s dropping passes that him then in the hands.

Hey, SC won but it was far more due to UGA not executing then anything SS did.

If Tech comes to play the game with BC is not close…the Jackets by 17. If Louisville comes to play the game with Ky is not close…Cards by 17. Not a duplicate but rather both teams have too many athletes for the Eagles and Cats. You can write back on Monday and ask me to start doing your predictions.

Tony,

Man, you keep on slinging that Alabama crap that no one is buying.

They’re not that good a football team, Barny.

Same with Tech. BC is going to prove that the ACC is a one team league when they come into half sold out “historic” Grant Field and knock the smug out of the Bugs. You Bug fans should be ashamed of yourselves. Absolutely ashamed that you can’t sell out a 50,000 seat stadium in a city with a metro area of over 4,000,000.

And don’t give your usual excuses about a spread out “fan” base. I use the term fan loosely when applied to those who root for the Bugs. There are thousands of Dawg fans who not only travel through many states to get to Athens, there’s the homegrown fans who travel through many states to get out to Mississippi or LSU.

Your excuses are lame and illogical. 50,000 seats and you have to entice people with free hotdogs, cokes, and now parking.

I’ve told you people on more than one occassion to stop being a bunch of elitists who think their poo doesn’t stink and expand your fanbase to the non-alums living throughout the metro area. There are millions of Dawg fans who’ll never set foot on campus in Athens who have brothers, daughters, grandfathers, or greatgrandmothers who went to Georgia, and we accept them in the Bulldog Nation. There are people with no ties at all that we accept into the Bulldog Nation because their money is just as good as an alums.

You want to grow your program, you need money. Non-alum money spends just as easily as alum money when you want to refurnish your creaky basketball stadium or when the school wants to start up a “Beauty and Geek” transfer student program so you can actually get some good looking women on your campus, and not the heifers we usually see in urine-colored hoodies when we make our every other year trek to Atlanta for the Dawgs annual beat-down of Bugland.

Bugs… you’re just not as hot S** as you think you are. Your sense of eliteness is sorely misplaced, and it’s high time you branch out your fanbase to ecompass a larger, more varied crowd.

And no, that doesn’t mean recruit more Al Qaida operatives.

Annoymous - Please help me understand what SS and his D had to do with Stafford over throwing those wide open TD passes or the passes that were dropped, that were also wide open?

When SS’s D gets exposed by competent passing O’s, perhaps then you’ll see that has zero to do with my thoughts on SS but the facts.

Isn’t it cute how when a bulldog learns a new word they will use it even though it’s obvious they don’t really know what it means.

I am a Tech fan, and the only time I have ever set foot on campus is to see a football (or basketball) game. I have been a fan for over 40 years and have never once been asked to leave or even made to feel like my support wasn’t appreciated by GT or it’s fans. However, everytime (and I do mean EVERY time) a bulldog fan learns that I am a Tech fan, they try to make me feel stupid or like I couldn’t possibly be a real football fan and pull for Tech. I have found that 99% of UGA fans are pompous jerks who think that any fan of Tech must be an idiot. It’s like they can’t be happy unless they convince you why you should be a UGA fan. That to me is elitist behavior. Tech fans in general hate UGA fans because of that attitude and for no other reason.

This new idea that Tech fans are elitist is a joke.

Just to know, there will be more up-sets this week. 1) BC/Tech is a hard one to call, but I’d give Tech the advantage because it’s a home game, and the fact that Chan doesn’t usually start sinking until middle-to-late season. TECH 35,BC21 2) UGA scored 35 on OSU, and with the bad taste the DAWGS still have in their mouth from last week—including Bobo, I’d say that they’ll score more than 45—even w/ back-up’s playing. UGA-55,WC-13 3) FLA ‘should’ win this game, but I’m not sold on Meyer or Tebow, and because I just have a ‘feeling’ that TENN is due. TENN-24,FLA-17 4) I was going to go w/ ARK, but something tells me Saban’s ‘D’ will be ready. ALA-21, ARK-17. 5) Last week was a ‘wake-up’ call for L’Ville’s ‘D’. Doesn’t matter. KEN-45, L’Ville-41. 6) MissSt will play tough, and AU won’t seal it until middle of the 3rd. AU-17, MissSt-14. 7) Who knows what to think here. FlaSt-24, COL-21. 8) USC does enough score-wise to hold on to #1, but it won’t always be pretty. USC-38, NEB-20. 9) WASH will keep it close until the 2nd half. OSU-31, WASH-24. 10) MICH is officially looking for a new coach. ND-17,MICH-13

I’m always moved by little doggies that chomp on Tech for their seat sales, as if the city of Atlanta has any care about Tech football. It’s all about getting a bunch of alumni (GA 10 times more than Tech), plus people who actually think college teams are the same as professional franchises. Miami won numerous national championships and rarely sold over 60% of the old Orange bowl. GATech will never draw the farmers, construction workers, and factory workers to their games, forever.

Some mutt fans are running skeered with some of their post. Yep, the fleabags have won 6 straight, heck they have had the upper hand since Dodd left. But all those advantages are now disappearing and they know it. Today’s athletes don’t look at Tech’s academics as an negative but a positive feature, and the quality of Tech’s facilities are top notch. So I don’t blame you for being afraid butt-sniffers, looks like your day in the sun is done and some more legends are going to be made on the FLATS!!

Ha!! Sure you’ve won six in a row, but now we’re gonna make it an actual rivalry! May even win one someday! Techs elitism ended the day that Joe Hamilton said Tech wasn’t any harder to get into than any other school. Couple that with the fact that Ball started for four years and any idiot can see that Tech ain’t special. In fact, Tech is especially stupid, because if they would hire the right coach they have the potential to become a dynasty! Best school in the black capital of the US, there is no reason Tech shouldn’t be dominant.

Nascar, methinks you have opened a scab on the bugs.

As a founding member and Rush Chairman of the Noble and Sacred Order of the FANS OF CHAN, I would like to offer the following quote. That great civil rights icon Rodney King once said, “Can’t we all just get along.” And while we are using great quotes, I have heard our sainted CHAN say that he has a dream. Yes you heard me, CHAN has a dream. To one day take his team and climb that mountain and win just one over those hated rivals. Pity it won’t be this year.

CHAN also used the words of JFK. We shall beat the dawgs and we will do it in this decade. Or maybe the next one. We shall do this not because it is easy, but because it is hard. I mean really, really hard.

Then CHAN usually leaves humming “Impossible Dream” by Frank Sinatra. This is why this wonder of a head coach has the greatest fan club of all college head coaches, The FANS OF CHAN.

I remember back in early Dec 2001, Florida was favored by 17 over UT. What happened? UT ran all over the gators, controlled the entire ballgame, kept the gaytors offense on the sideline and won the game. EVERY so called expert was picking UF to win that game big. I have the same feeling this year. EVERY expert has picked the gaytors to win big, except for ESPN’s Mark May. UT needs this game alot more than UF…smells like an upset.

I am a native Atlantan, and graduate of Georgia Tech. Although I now live outside of the state of Georgia, I still check back into the AJC site to see what is going on with local teams, news, etc. I wish it were more surprising to find the type of comments that you see on this blog on a regular basis – but since nothing has changed there, I thought it might be fitting to throw a few things out there to provide some clarification for a few of you who seem to need it.

Georgia Tech’s smallish stadium is deemed “historic”, because it’s the oldest continuously operated on campus stadium in Division 1-A (or whatever they are calling it this week). The student body even helped build the thing. The field is called “Grant Field”, Grant being the benefactor of the original construction, while the stadium is “Bobby Dodd Stadium.” I suppose all of these names might seem strange to some, but the alternative was to dedicate something to some guy named Heisman- you may have heard of him. As for that someone on this blog who made reference to Tech’s “creaky” baseball stadium – well, you obviously haven’t been to the campus in the last three years (the stadium was completely redone, and is without a doubt a very fine facility). How sad that you feel the need to make things up in your effort to bash another school.

Coming from someone with a degree from Georgia Tech, I can tell you without question that Tech is in no way elitist. There is however, a great since of pride in having survived the academic rigors of the school, and going on to successful business ventures after graduation. Having a degree from Tech unquestionably offers a great deal of distinction, and opens a lot of doors instantly for jobs that others just don’t get. It’s not elitist – it’s pride and satisfaction that we have. In addition, if you’re a Tech fan, it means that YOU PROBABLY ACTUALLY WENT TO SCHOOL THERE. The alternative major university in the state has a bevy of fans who woof, hoot, and holler, talk about “we” did this, “we” did that, “our” recruiting class is # whatever, having never even set foot on campus in Athens. If it’s not these people, it’s the folks who went to Georgia that feel it’s necessary to talk about how Tech’s stadium doesn’t fill up. Just a fact for the confused- there are more Georgia alumni living in Atlanta than there are Tech alumni ANYWHERE. In other words, there just are not that many people who graduated from Tech. It’s the actual graduates who make up most of the fan base, and there aren’t a lot of them.

Oh, and by the way – just because Tech fans aren’t constantly touting the program, mentioning it only when there is something legitimate to talk about doesn’t make them “frontrunners”. It only means that we don’t have a false sense of entitlement of conference and national championships with no real basis, save the litany of junior college military academy transfers in a given year.

Since moving to Atl 3 years ago, I have befriended many wonderful Tech & UGA alum. They, like me, are loyal to their schools. And most are pulling for the other’s school 11 games of the 12 game schedule, because as they say it makes the state of Georgia look good. There is always some good mannered ribbing, but that is all it is.

Unfortunately when one goes to a blog such as this we are forced to read the likes of “my stadium is bigger than yours”, or blatant name calling. Isn’t this the type of behavior that should have been left in the sandbox years ago?

Fortunately the few that feel the need to trash talk are the minority, & do not reflect on the true loyal well mannered fans from both schools.

To the small % of those that feel the need to act like children, you are the ones that give both fine institutions a bad name in the eyes of the rest of the country.

Be loyal to your school, but keep it in perspective. Trash talking & berating only makes tou the smaller person.

NASCARfan, I wouldn’t say that we at Tech are eletists…just better than you. We welcome anyone that wants to support the Jackets. We just don’t tend to attract people that feel it necessary to get on all fours and bark.

I grew up in South Georgia as a Tech fan all my life. I know a lot of elitists fans and they are not from Tech. If I hear, But I pull for Tech when they aren’t playing Georgia one more time I think I will hurl.” I heard this all my life. I heard it from family and friends, many who actually did graduate from UGA. I love them , but I have to say they must be absolute liars when it comes to pulling for Tech. I hated goingto church on Sunday’s when Tech lost and UGA won. They were the most arrogant people on the face of the earth. Now I love them and even like them most of the time, but I have to tell you; I would pull for the Taliban against UGA in a game of tittly winks. I hate the dogs. They are tolerable when they are down, but they are lousy winners. Guess they will be pretty tolerable this year.

As for Chan going on to the NFL, I suppose that would give us the opportunity to promote a deserving John Tenuta and if Bonds stays ar OC, I suppose we are still in pretty good hands.

Go Jackets! THWG!

Hey, look at all the smart prognosticators on here.

Is it time to state the obvious yet?

Ga. Tech and “it won’t even be close?” Kind of…it wasn’t.

Louisville with too many athletes (what about when the other team has the ball??)? Nope.

Auburn over “do they still have a program” Mississippi State? Nope.

Ohio State losing to the Pac-10? Nope.

Florida State losing to “Jan Kemp University of the Rockies?” Um, nope.

Florida in a close game? Nope.

Michigan over an historically inept Notre Dame? Really? Bold.

I’m so impressed with all the smart predictions on this blog. Maybe you should start your own blog, peoples. Would make for some good comedy.
