How badly does Fulmer need to beat Florida?

Five burning questions as we head towards Saturday:

1. How badly does Phillip Fulmer need a big road win? Fulmer has won 80 percent of his games at Tennessee but the Vols haven’t had a huge upset road win in a while. The only way to calm down the critics is to go on the road and win a game that most folks think you’re not going to win. I’m talking about a signature win like 2001 at Florida or 2003 at Miami. Fulmer could use one of those. If Tennessee loses in The Swamp the stat you’ll see the most next week: Tennessee will be 15-12 in its last 27 games.

2. Will Les Miles EVER talk about it? Every day between now and the end of the season somebody, somewhere is going to speculate that Miles will leave LSU and become the next coach at Michigan should a change be made in Ann Arbor. He’s smart by saying “I’m not going to talk about it.” Nick Saban got tired of hearing questions about Alabama and so he talked about it. He still regrets it. I don’t think it’s a done deal that Michigan will call Miles. But if the alma mater calls, he’ll listen. And he’ll be in a good position to negotiate if the Tigers play for the BCS championship.

3. What will be the over and under for Kentucky-Louisville? Louisville gives up 42 to Middle Tennessee State. Kentucky gives up 324 yards rushing to Kent State. Great quarterbacks on both teams. Can you say the first team to 50 wins? It may take five hours to play this game.

4. Is the ACC going to get a meaningful non-conference win? Miami gets ripped by Oklahoma. Virginia Tech gets hammered at LSU. Wake Forest plays valiantly at home and loses by three to Nebraska. Virginia loses at Wyoming. North Carolina loses to East Carolina. N.C. State loses to UCF. Georgia Tech beats Notre Dame but this season a LOT of people are going to beat Notre Dame. There are two opportunities coming up. West Virginia is at Maryland tonight. That’s a long shot for the Terps. Florida State goes to Colorado on Saturday. Colorado’s not very good but league needs to win one of these intersectional games. People are starting to challenge the ACC’s manhood as a football conference.

5. If Arkansas wins Saturday, will Houston Nutt’s critics finally shut up? There has never been a coach who wanted to start playing games this season more than Nutt. He’s 1-0 going to Alabama on Saturday and the only way to answer the critics is to keep winning. If Arkansas wins in Tuscaloosa, will that put an end to the Mitch Mustain affair? If the Hogs are 5-0 when they host Auburn on Oct. 13, will THAT do it? If he’s 8-0 when South Carolina comes to Fayetteville on Nov. 3, will that do it? I’m just wondering how long this fan base is going to be divided over one kid.

Tony:

So blowing out Georgia at Sanford last year, beating supposedly Georgia’s best team in history two years prior (19-14), and beating LSU in Baton Rouge two years ago aren’t signature road wins? I’m not a complete Fulmer fan, but he wins more big games on the road than anyone. I just hope he can start winning the big games at home again.

cont. (sorry, accidentally hit enter). He has to figure out how we keep gettting embarrassed in bowl games and end that NOW. He has to finish soon in the top 10 again.

Fulmer is a great recruiter, Cutcliffe is an outstanding quarterback and receiver coach. Chavez has fallen off some this last two years (serious injuries plagued us last year).

Is FL a key game, only if he loses to GA or AL and another bowl.

Part of my previous blog comments got lost. My friends back in Knoxville, close to or in the athletic program, do say that patience is getting really thin for Fulmer. His inability to beat Spurrier until the end at FL caused some dismay, but was offset by the NC and the SEC championships, his inability to beat Richt until recently hurt him but the wins saved him. He can occasionally beat or almost beat Florida, but what has really put him on the hot seat is our pathetic bowl and SEC championship record. One more year of that, coupled with a mediocre season would bring his demise I think.

That makes me proud.

That joke is practically stillborn.

I wonder how many Bammer sisters have complained to their Bammer brothers while they’re doing it,

“would you please stop calling out Satans name when we’re doing the nasty?

I actually wrote my dissertation on Bammer sex lives.

Highlights from my painful research.

Tony, you know better than to make that ridiculous statement about Fulmer on the road. The Vols are 6-4 in their last 10 games against Top 10 teams on the road, which dates back to the 1999 season. That road record (against top teams) stacks up against any coach in the country.

I agree with RandyT, it’s the home record against the top teams where we need serious improvement.

  1. Fulmer is edging up to the desperation line as we speak.
  2. You hit the nail on the head; Miles is bright enough to not talk about it until the end of the season. He’s got a great run going here—-why distract his team?
  3. I assume there is no rule that the over/under can’t be three digits. If that’s the case, then 102.
  4. It took a while, but the ACC has shown its true colors. It’s a basketball conference! Always has been, always will be.
  5. From the admitted distance of a disinterested party, I have a difficult time understanding the Arkansas/Nutt situation. It always seemed to me like he was doing a good job there. There has to be something just below the surface that no one in the press has been able to dig up or substantiate yet.

I agree with TN Boy. I’m not a Fulmer fan at all but calling him out for big road wins isn’t right. He beat UGA the last two times in Athens as previously mentioned along with the comeback against LSU. He’s also consistently beat Bama in Tuscaloosa. The problem he has is not putting it all together and winning the SEC East and playing for the championship. He’s had good seasons but not great ones lately, that’s what he needs to rectify.

The fact is the ACC is very weak this year. Miami is off the steroids and looking like the teams they had when they were independent years ago. N.C State is in transition but why would you hire someone from Boston College to recruit southern football players or to beat them. I think the mid majors have a recruiting advantage even above the SEC. Schools like CFU or South Florida, East Carolina. I think Vince sent his kid to La. Tech knowing the direction of recruiting. Their administrations wants a winner so bad, to put their name out there, that they will cut corners and hell they are probably cutting corners in general when you look at their size and wonder why all those people would want to go to school at a place no one has ever heard of. And the football player they recruit may never have heard of any college more less their college, so to him it is all the same anyway. Try listening to a few interviews from Florida International about the fight with Miami. I am surprise a producer of SNL hasn’t bought the rights. We now live in a country where all are entitled to a college education; whether you can read or act correctly you too can claim to be a college educated man or woman. Some don’t even have high school degrees but they have college degrees. It is the whole of society not just jocks, but I can tell you one entrance hurtle they have to jump; they have to be able to play football, that is never compromised.

I would almost have to say that Fulmer will beat Florida. It feels like its time. The only question is how. Well, my question is: How physical is Florida’s defensive line? The key to beating Florida is no mystery. Run over them. Do not try and figure them out—keep them off the field by running the ball and using up the clock. If their offense is not on the field they don’t score points. I think its simple-maybe too simple.

People are STARTING to question the ACC’s manhood? Nothing has happened so far this season that is anything new. The ACC always performs poorly out of conference. And it is always supposedly just around the corner from becoming a powerful conference, but it NEVER happens. The truth is the SEC is lightyears ahead of the ACC in talent and coaching, and that is the ACC’s chief out of conference competition. Even the Big East had a winning record vs. the ACC last year. The ACC is the worst BCS conference and some serious consideration should be given to the idea of giving its auto BCS bid to someone else. I can’t even remember the last time they won a BCS game so what’s the point anyway.

As usual, Barnhart is clueless and living off his undeserved reputation of someone who knows college football. Tennessee was an underdog last year going into the uga game on the road and won. Tennessee was also road underdog against Lsu in ‘05. But let me guess, those dont count.

Jay - It’s not wether they are favored or not. Its the expectations of the fans. Tennessee expects to beat UGA, however they don’t expect to beat UF - so that would be an upset.

Most of the Tennessee fans I know were ready to punt Fulmer after dropping 2 in one season to Auburn. If anything, they feel even stronger about that 2 years later.

The SEC is tough, so many good teams, with potential, to win conference games every Saturday. this includes Miss State(Florida and Bama). I thought Tenn was best in the East, but Florida shows TNT and talent. The only prediction solid is LSU and that could get twisted around? The top 5 LSU Auburn, Tenn. UGA , Florida has a change with Auburn and UGa being replaced with South Carolina, with Kentucky and Vandy winning big ames. Auburn has two seniors and the rest are freshman and sophomores on OL..only 12 seniors, so their is a Reconstruct Era which includes other SEC teams.

crazy4gt TENN ‘expects’ to beat UGA?? That may have been the case in the ‘90’s, but Fulmer is 2-4 since Richt’s arrival in ‘01, and TENN has lost EVERY time they’ve played UGA in Knoxville this decade. I think it’s UGA that expects to beat TENN. Jay, you are right on w/ your assessment of Tony Barnhart. His self-appointed name of ‘Mr. College Football’ is laughable. While TENN does need this win (vs. FLA) it would be no more important than the LSU, UGA or Miami win. It would cool his seat off a little but won’t change the inevitable if he has another end-of-the-season slide.

What is with all ya’ll? Phil Fulmer is a loser and will always be a loser. I got a chance to see the classless Fulmer on a California TV channel before the TN v Cal game and I wish I had recorded it. He said things like: “We’re here to show Cal how football is played,” and we can’t wait to kick to their big time punt returner.” Fulmer reminds me of a man who has lost the tractor he loves. Perhaps he should buy a new one and give up football. He may be pushed into that after he’s lost to GA, KY, AL, Vandy, and Arkansas. On a second TN point: Did you know that Neyland refused to play black players when he coached at Knoxville so they named a stadium after him. What a disgrace to the conference.

By Randyt

September 13, 2007 3:24 PM | Link to this

@Gen Neyland

I agree. Actually I think TN will take both FL and (okay I’ll say it) GA. FL and GA, like it or not, are still playing with very young teams. Will FL and GA be as good as touted, probably…but not necessarily this season. At this point, Ainge is the most experienced QB, and every bit as good as Stafford and Tebow at least for now.

@boblink.

If Fulmer did indeed say those things, then I apologize for the Vols. Regarding your comments about Fulmer being a loser…well until Richt came along, he ruled GA, both here and in K-town. Richt is good, probably better than Fulmer, but in the SEC, all teams should remember the old adage…”people who live in glass houses, should not throw stones”…and that includes Dawg fans.

When Fulmer lost that SEC Championship in ‘01 to LSU, that was it for me. How can you lose that game to a backup qb?

By volfan

September 13, 2007 9:22 PM | Link to this

Bobolink, don’t be an idiot. Fulmer stated they would punt away from Cal. So what if he said the other since we showed them exactly that last year in Neyland.

Also, Neyland stopped coaching in ‘52. How many NCAA teams had many black players prior to then.

Another p** off UGA fan. How’s it feel to have lost your last 5 in the SEC East?

By shane

September 14, 2007 12:58 AM | Link to this

the comment about neyland was way off the mark.no southern teams were allowed to recruit balcks in his day.the general did not”refuse”to play blacks,at that time blacks could not enroll at ut,or any other southern school.neyland wasn’t even coaching at the time of the”brown vs the board of education”ruling.listening to the rumblings amoung the ut fans fulmer must win SOMETHING this year, but i think how ut finishes the season is more important than what happens vs florida.there are some ark fans that want nutt gone,i think he will have to win the west for that to change.what would miles have to gain by talking?michigan has a coach, for miles to speak out now would make him seem low class.their will be plenty of time to talk if and when michigan makes a move.the acc is down no doubt, miami is not a power anymore, fsu has slipped despite spending big bucks for asst coaches,vt loses their bowl game to uga and then is humbled by lsu, maryland lost tonight, wake forest, the defending champs, lost to neb,and they are no longer the”big red”of past glory, duke and nc state are jokes, and unc has been weak for years.clemson, tech and bc look good.are the enough to carry a 12 team conference?as for kentucky-louisville,kentucky will make it intresting if they can find a defense, otherwise, louisville by twenty.

Gen Neyland——How badly does Big Phil need a win? Well, like my folks, I think Phil probably would like to keep his job and paycheck, and I don’t think he is going to lose either over one more win or loss. That having been said, I keep hearing rumbling noises out of the hills of east Tennessee about great regional and national recruiting and under-performance by that talent. What’s your opinion on Phil’s likely future tenure? Is it time to follow Johnny Majors into retirement?

By 3inarowinNeyland

Well, couldn’t agree more with 2N4YEARS about crazy4gt’s comment. How in the world does Tenn expect to beat UGA when the dogs have won 3 in a row in Neyland and 5 of the last 7. This is not the 90’s anymore.

And everybody knows how many in a row against the gt’s.

To volfan, sorry but you guys have gone from perennial contender to perennially ok and with Carolina playing the way it is, the fourth best team in the east.

To answer your question, it hurts having lost the last 5 in the east. Thankfully we get the Vols in Knoxville for our next one and if past history tells us anything, the streak will SOON BE OVER.

I hate to burst your balloon Dawg fans, but Munson will not be making another “hob nailed boot” speech this year. Stafford is not David Greene, and your team will not be pulling another win out of its backside unless Ainge gets hurt. You talk about recent history, well if recent history prevails you could not score a touchdown against SC, so to think you can outscore hte Vols is a bit ludicrous at this point.

Nope, you need to get your crack pipe and crying towel out, you will need them when the Dawgs come to Neyland. However we will make it three in a row in Athens next year.
