Tuberville second guessing is silly
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just one man’s opinion:
1. The Tuberville second-guessing is silly: Who has won more close games and games he wasn’t supposed to win than Auburn’s Tommy Tuberville? Fans were second-guessing his decision to run out the clock and go to overtime against South Florida, rather than go for the win with less than a minute left. But football is about playing the percentages. When your offense has turned the ball over five times and your quarterback is not having a good night, the percentages say play for the overtime at home. It didn’t work out because South Florida made the play to win the game. Good for them. But Tuberville played the percentages.
2. Georgia Tech should win the Coastal: Not only have the Jackets looked very impressive in their first two games, but the rest of the ACC’s Coastal Division seems to be in trouble. Virginia Tech switched to a true freshman quarterback after getting blasted (48-7) by LSU. Miami got pummeled (51-13) by Oklahoma. Virginia lost at Wyoming and the Cavs are contemplating QB change. North Carolina lost at East Carolina. Duke has lost 22 straight.
3. College football STILL has the best regular season: If you doubt it, consider this. The season is only two weeks old and already people are painting doomsday scenarios for the BCS. With LSU, Oklahoma and Southern Cal at the top of the polls, the speculation has begun on which team could be the odd man out, like Auburn was in 2004. That’s because in college football every game matters, whether you’re playing Louisiana State or Appalachian State.
4. If Alabama wins, the state will go nuts: Since Nick Saban took the Alabama job fans have been pointing to Saturday’s game with Arkansas as the first real test of his ability to transform the Crimson Tide football program. Just a warning. If Alabama wins Saturday, that place is going to be up for grabs when Georgia goes over there next week. And if Alabama beats Arkansas, they will match up very well with Georgia and Florida State. In fact, if Alabama beats Arkansas, the Tide is capable of beating every team on its schedule except LSU.
5. FIU-Miami should not play: After last year’s ugly brawl, the aftermath of which was mishandled by the Miami administration, a rematch of this game never should have been played. Miami could certainly use an easy win but the risk of another incident is just too great. The good news is that Miami should be a little more disciplined under Randy Shannon.

Even without the BCS, the college football season would be the best. Some sort of playoff would not diminish the regular season since it would still involve polls in some form. I’m not sure what TB’s opinion is on this but some use the “importance of regular season games” as an argument against a playoff. It’s a bogus argument and we need to scrap the BCS ASAP.

Tubby watched his offense implode in the 2nd half.
I still 2nd guess the call.
The Riverboat Gambler was gun shy.
Cox needs his confidence back or he needs to sit for a few series and get his head back in the game.

RE: Point 3.
If I have to lose the best regular season (and I’m not sure how a regular season where an undefeated team can easily have no chance to play for the title can rationally qualify as the ‘best’) to get rid of the worst postseason, then let’s do it.

Tony TT is a “snake in the grass” and has been since Ole Miss. Really class act the way he left Oxford. Auburn recruits well enough and has enough Georgia players that Terry Bowden went undefeated. He would be gone if the University President and the boosters hadn’t been so stupid and fired him first before trying to hire somebody. Petrino would probably not gotten in a position to tie the score against South Florida.

TB, “…up for grabs”? What does that mean? If Alabama wins Saturday, next week’s Georgia game won’t be up for grabs. Bama can beat the Dawgs, no matter what ol’ Pat Dye says.

Lot’s of Football left to play for Ga. Tech. As a Dawg fan, I can see they have a good team, but Everyone they play knows that and will be up for them…..But they could run the table and sit and watch the national title game like Auburn did. It’s a national Country Club, and only the elite and beautiful are allowed to play. TV pays the bills and the King of “Free hot dog and coke” with a ticket will not pass the network smell test.

1. The Tuberville second-guessing is silly: Basically, yes. But, TT is so smug it’s hard to like him. Kind of like Roswell Ed…
2. Georgia Tech should win the Coastal: seem so, but I would count out VT or Miami yet. I hate to be a $EC elitist, but the ACC has not been impressive so far.
3. College football STILL has the best regular season: No doubt.
4. If Alabama wins, the state will go nuts: What do you mean “will” go nuts. They’re nuts now, have been nuts for 60 years, and will be nuts in the future regardless of the success or non-success of Coach Saban.
5. FIU-Miami should not play: Last year should only ensure that neither coach nor AD should have a job if it happens again. I seem to remember Clemson and South Carolina had a bad brawl, and had no issues in the rematch.

Why do we have to see if Alabama beats Arkansas before deciding how they match up with Georgia? If we now can predict the BCS final 3 for January, why can’t we predict week 4 before week 3? Records aside, don’t Alabama and Georgia usually matchup pretty evenly? Just enjoy all the games being played and save the speculation.

Before everyone blows away my rumor of Spurrier to LSU rumor, My wifes cousin works with a State Regent member who is on the Athletic Board at LSU, and they are aware of What’s going on at Ann Arbor and they know who’s at the top of that list. LSU is already putting together a wish list, and yes, the ole ball coach is at the top of the list. Saban’s contract has changed the landscape. I think the ole ball would listen, regardless of what he says. See Miami Dolphins head Coach Saban for proof, CIRCA DEC. 2006.

The ACC is going down because the new coaches are coming in, some want leave, even though their program is suffering (FSU). Virginia coach can recruit, but he can’t coach. North Carolina (new coach) is 2-3 years from challenging anyone for anything. Friedgen is a top assistant only (MD). BC has a new coach. NC State has a new coach. Miami has a new coach. VATech needs a new coach, as their bash mouth style is no longer supported by talent. Right now Clemson and GATech are the class of the league, and neither is ranked higher than 15th. Remember, a few years ago the Big East was in similar shambles, and look where they are now. Everything in sports is cyclic, and the ACC is no different.

I am a Tech alum and an ardent fan but let’s not go crowning the Jackets as division champs just yet. So far, they have run all over an undermanned Notre Dame and a mid-level high school team. If they dominate BC Saturday, then I’ll start getting excited.

Curso, bama always recruits well in Alabama. This year they’re doing well for a # of reasons. A. Saban is a good recruiter. B. bama has lots of scholarships to fill. C. Auburn has a little more than half the spots bama has available. That means bama will get more recruits than Auburn. Even in the last few years when we’ve owned bama, it’s still been no better than about 50/50 in state.
AU will be just fine. We’ve never relied on bama solely for recruits anyway. There are 21 players on the team right now from Florida alone.

It’s Sept. Start your brag in Feb.
These services always grease the schools that buy more magazines ie Ga, ND, and Al.
If class rank indicated success then UGA would be undefeated every year.
There are plenty of players out there. Don’t worry ‘bout AU in SEPT.

1) It’s not ‘silly’ to second guess Terriblevile. Know the difference between a ‘Good’ coach and a ‘Great’ coach?? A ‘Good’ coach goes with the percentages and a ‘Great’ coach goes with his Gut. 2) GaTech should win the Coastal Div. Wow. With all of those pathetic teams in the ACC why not? Then they’ll finish the season with a loss to UGA (again), probably lose the ACC Championship game (again) and lose their Bowl game. 3) Yes, College Football does indeed have the best regular season. 4) Yes, ‘BAMA fans will go nutts if they beat ARK. I really don’t see the correlation between beating ARK and ‘matching up’ well with a team that barely beat UAB. And the only way ALA beats UGA is if UGA plays like they did last Saturday. 5) FIU and Miami are more than likely under a contract agreement Mr. Tony, not to mention it’s nearly impossible to find a 12th game to take it’s place. So just explain to the AD’s of the appropriate schools how to do this & I’m just sure they’d listen to you.

First off I ran all over Ears and his pansy team he’s fielding this year last saturday…And if Auburn recruits Mobile so well then how come they have ZERO recruits from there this year and Bama has about 5 or 6 so far and will end up with more than that…Also I thought Upshaw,Burton Scott and Undra Billingsly were Barn locks? right now aubarn remembers 5 in a row but what they have forgotten is Bama beat them about 15 times in a row back in the day…that might not be an exact number but I know they had the barn by the a* for YEARS…also Alabama leads every series agains all SEC teams…oh yeah..the barn is on repeat offender status so one more of your mistakes and it’s the death penalty…Auburn fans are the most ignorant fans in the SEC…they have had a good run while Bama has just gone throug the worst 10 yrs of its existance because of false allegations imposed by the SEC,they got to play a Zook ran FLa team a few times, and I don’t know how many times the barn has won a game on bogus phantom flags or no calls to give them the edge in the game…you can’t deny that…Im not even an Alabama fan and I’ll tell you that..a crappy UGA team waxed you on your own field last year..thats the team who lost to vandy and kentucky in the same year…face it Bama is kicking the barns a* in recruiting this year not only in Alabama but with recruits from Florida #2 All purpose QB Star Jackson…A 4* kid from Texas who decommited from A&M to commit to Saban…#2 kicker in the nation already commited and I can almost guarantee you they will get Julio Jones,Jerrell Harris,Glenn Harbin, and the McClain kid from Anniston…Auburn has ONE top recruit in Alabama that the Tide wasnt even in on and Hunt even admitted that Bama hadnt been talking to him so he went ahead and commited to the barn..so way to go auburn you have Hunt and a bunch of Mississippi guys that Coach O and Crooms werent interested in!!! What are their girlfriends names?
Do they like
wheat or white?
boxers or briefs?
Ginger or Mary Ann?
chocolate or vanilla?
strawberry or grape?
domestic or foreign?
Coke or Pepsi?
I bet you have a dry erase board in your Buffalo Bill style dungeon/basement with a spreadsheet dedicated to all of these questions.
I’ll agree that I surf the AJC sports blogs every hour or two at work to screw with people but that’s it for me.
You sir are committed.

You don’t hear anybody saying South Florida was good last weekend. We kind of are at the funeral and we are not mentioning the corpse. I think South Florida was a better team than the one that won in Athens Saturday night, lots of talent. I don’t like Virginia Tech changing that quarterback that was the problem for Va. Tech just like Ball was the problem for Tech last year. Va. Tech is going to be a different team with a mobile quarterback. A crazy quarterback can do a lot of damage while a less talented one that plays within himself and on a team with a good defense might not get in the way of a victory. Ain’t nothing ever been like college football. I feel sorry for those Yankees that think they have seen it. The only reason Miles would go to Michigan is he wants to retire in peace, which he will never get in the SEC no matter how good he gets. Up there you can fake it and the press hypes it up, here you have the reality of having to play somebody every week. Nick Saban at Alabama is a perfect example. Dawgs use to have a breather when they played South Carolina or Alabama. Both went out and hired real coaches and now even without LSU, Georgia may have the hardest schedule in the SEC if not the country. And when the brothers of the SEC get through chewing on them here comes Tech. All this stuff about Georgia being young, the truth is there are no creampuffs in the conference any more. Mississippi State will hire somebody next year and pay him 4 million. The funny thing about the Miami/FIU game is FIU might stop fighting long enough to beat Miami. Anybody that would hire Pat Nix as an offensive coordinator is not all here and that was after Ball threw into the stands on fourth down at Georgia and after Calvin Johnson left Tech never beating Georgia. Exactly what was on the resume that Miami saw, maybe O’Leary wrote the thing for Nix. Whatever that was then and this is now and we have Bond and we are good.

1.You should be complimenting Tuberville for getting his inferior team to OT. 2.Little early for that prediction. No one in the ACC is half as good as Oklahoma or LSU. The games thus far prove nothing. 3.Why, because the conclusion of the season is determined by people voting on perceptions? I guess when the way of determining who the best team is, is so silly you better be entertained by the regular season.
4.I am thinking the Auburn fans in Alabama won’t be all that excited if Alabama wins.
5.Love to see another fight down in Miami. Both those teams suck anyway, a fight would be the highlight.

Mike ford, Jones, McClain are only two you mention Auburn will offer. Both good players, but I will bet you the bank Julio Jones is Auburn or LSU bound. Bama has commitments from 5 WR receivers, who Auburn offered only two of those. Auburn clean Mobile out last year which two are playing as true freshman. I agree with Roswell, you are not a Bama fan…lets try one of those Bryant past drooler. Bama did well under a coach Bear bryant, but they will never reach that pedestal again especially with Suitcase Saban. We have 6 commitments from Florida, 1 from Miss. Bama will lose next 2 out three, maybe all three if Arky gets the running game going….good luck against Houston and Lousiana-Monroe, good game with Western Carolina.SIX IN ROW COMING UP.

WarEagle…I would take that bet on Julio Jones. Everyone one who even remotely follows recruiting knows that it is a BAMA and FSU race. LSU is in the running still but your beloved TigerEaglePlainsmen have NO SHOT AT ALL. AU will end up with a decent recruiting class for the simple reason that you guys has what, 11 not qualify last year and you have a FANTASTIC sociology department that will make sure they remain eligible when they finally do qualify.
The is no denying the great success AU has had over the last 5 years. Ironically it has been the same years which ALABAMA was on probation. You guys have shown for 2 straight weeks that you offense is pathetic and that you guys are in a for a 7-8 win season. But hey…at least you have won five in a row against Alabama..right?
