The Fearless Friday Forecast

It was a tough opening week for the Fearless Friday Forecast. Tennessee flew all the way out to the West Coast to get its butt kicked. Wake Forest was burned by a hot quarterback (BC’s Matt Ryan). N.C. State waited an entire half before starting to play (against UCF). And Duke was, well, Duke.

That’s 6-4 out of the gate. We’ll try to do better this time:

1. South Carolina at Georgia: To hear Steve Spurrier tell it, South Carolina has just quit giving scholarships and has reduced football to a club sport. His praise for Georgia has been effusive. His concern about the Gamecocks has been substantial. If you’re a Bulldog, you should be very, very concerned because the Head Ball Coach is up to something. I’m going to go with Georgia but I’m telling you, I have a very funny feeling about this game. Georgia 28, South Carolina 27.

2. Samford at Georgia Tech: The objective today on The Flats is to get as many people as possible into the game without getting anybody hurt. The Yellow Jackets showed what they could do last week in South Bend. Now it’s time to get ready for the ACC schedule, which starts next week with Boston College. This will be a good day to let Taylor Bennett work on the passing game. Georgia Tech 42, Samford 7.

3. Virginia Tech at LSU: You shouldn’t read too much into Virginia Tech’s close win over East Carolina last Saturday. That was an emotionally draining day for Frank Beamer’s team and they played like it. The Hokies are bound to play better on offense tonight in Baton Rouge. It won’t matter. LSU’s defense belongs in another league and tonight we find out if the Tigers are really national championship contenders. It will be a low scoring game with hitting that is not for the faint heart. LSU 14, Virginia Tech 10.

4. Miami at Oklahoma: I know it was North Texas, but anytime you beat somebody 79-10, it’s time to pay attention. Oklahoma has a rookie quarterback in Sam Bradford who looks like he has a chance to be somebody. He’ll have his hands full with a gentleman named Calais Campbell, who is the best defensive end in the country. But Miami’s offense will struggle on the road and Randy Shannon will suffer his first loss as a head coach. Oklahoma 21, Miami 10.

5. Alabama at Vanderbilt: Last week’s 52-6 win over Western Carolina was a scrimmage for Alabama and new coach Nick Saban. Now we find out how Saban’s act will play on the road. Vanderbilt is a solid team that will not beat itself. Alabama will have to put up some points because its defense is going to struggle all season. Vanderbilt will play it close but Alabama will hold on and find a way to win. Alabama 24, Vanderbilt 13.

6. Southern Miss at Tennessee: It’s not often that Tennessee gets beat because the other team has better athletes but that’s what happened at California last Saturday. Tennessee missed 22 tackles on defense and that is simply unacceptable. This is a dangerous game for Tennessee with a trip to Florida coming up next week. It won’t be easy, but the Vols will figure out a way to win. Tennessee 24, Southern Miss 17.

7. South Florida at Auburn: The Tigers were very fortunate to beat Kansas State in the opener. South Florida is better. QB Matt Grothe and freshman RB Mike Ford (who originally committed to Alabama) give the Bulls a pretty potent one-two punch on offense. Auburn’s offensive line has to get better, period. QB Brandon Cox can’t take the beating he got last week. Auburn 27, South Florida 24.

8. TCU at Texas: Texas did not look like the Big 12 favorite last week against Arkansas State. I have to believe that the Longhorns were looking ahead to what is a very important non-conference game for both teams. TCU believes, and deservedly so, that it can run the table if it can get past Texas. And a 12-0 record that includes a victory in Austin makes the Horned Frogs a lock for the BCS. Still, Texas has more talent and talent will carry the day. Texas 31, TCU 20.

9. Notre Dame at Penn State: Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis is still trying to recover from a truck named Tashard Choice that ran over his defense last week. In what appears to be a mild act of desperation, Weis will throw true freshman quarterback Jimmy Clausen to Joe Paterno’s Nittany Lions, giving Clausen his first college start. I just didn’t see a whole lot to build on last week against Georgia Tech. We’ll see. Penn State 27, Notre Dame 14.

10. Oregon at Michigan: This was not a good week to be Lloyd Carr and the only way to change the subject is to win on Saturday against the Ducks. Easier said than done. Oregon quarterback Dennis Dixon runs an offense that is very similar to that of Appalachian State and Michigan hasn’t figured that one out yet. Needless to say there is a sense of urgency in Ann Arbor. Michigan 28, Oregon 21.

Tony,

Did we watch the same UT/Cal game? UT played Cal even, but the one turnover and punt return did them in. Hardly a butt kicking. For this week, Auburn gets upset, Michigan starts 0-2 as does ND…and SOS gets his revenge ‘tween the hedges.

I don’t believe a team that could have hung 40+ points on Ok State should lose to Spurriers chickens…….. but I could be wrong. Hope not.

I can give you two reasons why the cocks will not win.one is the defensive speed of UGA.Two is that stafford and Bobo are going to open up th offense a little more than they did against the OSU pokeys.

Tony: I think you probably are going to have a funny feeling about every Ga. game this year. Who the heck knows when the inexperience on the offensive line actually bites us. On the other hand, our skill players are pretty good and Sean Bailey gives us something we did not have last year. If we don’t turn the ball over, we are going to be difficult to beat. Georgia is stuck this year with the result that if they win, the opponent all the sudden is just considered not very good and if Georgia loses, its because Georgia is just not very good. Spurrier is what he is… but I like our chances with our coach… can’t remember his name, but I hear he’s pretty good himself.

someone please tell me why there is this love affair with VT? what have they done that has earned them all this praise? they didn’t win the ACC last year, the dogs hung 28 on them in the Peach and they were avg against ECU. usually when there’s a reason to be emotional about a game the team plays better, not worse. LSU is gonna kick this team back to Vir-gina without a problem….and come on barnhart, you have a “very funny feeling” about this UGA/USC game? i bet you had it last year and the 4 yrs before that. i have a funny feeling too, the dogs were just warming up last week. blake mitchel is gonna wish he would’ve skipped a few more classes and been suspended. he’s weak. he’s scared. and he’s not a leader. dogs win by pulling away in the 2nd half.

How about a Lenoir-Ryne(spelling?) Appy State predection?

We will see how good OK State is tonight VS Fla Atlantic.

You are right obout S.C. Vs Dawgs. I think SS is laying in the weeds on us. UGA 24 Cocks 17 in a nail biter.

It’ll be close, but not that close. SOS is a great coach, but DAWGS DO have better players, and Georgia has good coaching also. First half, UGA 13, USC 10. Second half, UGA 17, USC 13. Dawgs win 30 to 26.

The Vols got there butts kicked? they put up a great game that was closer than the score, try watching the game this week. The Vols will bounce back and win the SEC this year. I would love to see a rematch of Cal And Tennessee in a bowl game. The pups will beat the Cocks or is it there cocks? or will it be Stafford beating Cox? oh so confusing. I hope Alabama loses and Vandy can do it.

OSU was a tough game compared to what will happen tomorrow night. Once we rattle Mitchell, and we will, its all downhill for the Cocks. Our defense is too fast and they can’t stop us. Look for several big plays in the passing game.

UGA 41, USC 10.

Well folks,

Not even I, a devout UGA hater, am sure that SC beats the hounds this weekend. Spurrier is great, but that hasn’t mattered so far since he’s been at SC. UGA looked a lot better than I thought they would last week, and I don’t see SC being good enough to come into Athens and be that much better than Ok. State. We’ll see what happens, but I agree with Tony’s pick.

Tech will roll Samford obviously, and I like the 42-7. Hopefully no one is hurt.

I agree with every other game except a couple. I can see Vandy beating Alabama at Vandy, and I still am not sure about Michigan. Yes, it is the Big House (it was there last week too), and Michigan will be fired up (should have been last week too), but I don’t know. Oregon is really good and Michigan can’t heal that quickly. I call that one 31-21 Ducks. Sorry Navy and Maize, long ways yet to go.

So, I guess we’ll keep the in-laws happy this weekend (big dawg fans), and I’ll be happy as I prepare for the dawg slaughter on November 24th.

Good work Tony!

please send whatever you are smoking to P.O. Box 51-7 Dacula, Ga 30019….

The Nerds will come back down to earth a little this weekend (31-14). R.L., ND is simply AWFUL. They may have been the slowest team I saw all weekend. Dawgs will roll up on S.C (28-10). Anybody who thinks Jar Jar Binks and company will score 3 TDs against the Dawgs is very delusional. If the Dawgs don’t turn it over, we cruise! Michigan will rebound, Tide wins a squeeker, Vols win a close one, LSU romps (VT’s Glennon and OL is not very good), and Texas better watch out. USF could very well pull a shocker but my head says they won’t. Tony, 28-27? I am disappointed and shocked that is your prediction after your knowledge of CFB, particularlly in the South.

Mr. College Football, if you read this, could you comment on Lou Holtz supposedly apologizing on the ESPN set to the Dawg Nation for picking Okie State. He also picked the Gamechickens the last 2 yrs. running. I’ve always liked Lou Holtz and still do, but he dislikes Ga so much and it’s so obvious, it’s now funny to listen to him on the ESPN set. Mark May and Reese Davis beat him finally, it reached a point of being ridiculous, his disdain for GA.

I’ll admit that there have been years where I was concerned as to if the DAWGS would win this game. This isn’t one of those years. DAWGS win by at least 10. As for TENN, to those VOL fans that are still in denial it’s true: TENN did indeed get their butts kicked.

By CW

I think VT’s defense will put some pressure on LSU, but LSU has too much speed to be held out of the end zone. I think the hokies are better than they showed against ECU, but I just don’t think their QB Glennon is going to be able to get the passing game going and they will struggle to score anything but field goals.

I don’t believe for a minute that SC will win in Athens. I’d love to be proven wrong, but Richt looks like he is simply reloading another great team and I don’t think the gamecocks can keep up.

Everyone in Alabama has had their eye on the Vandy game for months. Even though Vandy hasn’t beaten Bama in 19 years, they always play tough and it is generally a much closer game than it should be. Bottom line is that the Dores aren’t sneaking up on the Tide. Saban’s team might not beat LSU, Tenn or some of their other stronger opponents this year, which puts even more focus on winning the games they should. Bama will win and it won’t be nearly as close as everyone thinks.

Spurrier is a great coach but this sandbagging theory the media has come up with is beyond ludicrous. If that’s what he’s resorting to these days to help SC win they are in some serious trouble.

As for other games, LSU will blow VT out. There’s no way to spin last week’s performance. That offense is atrocious. They’ll be lucky if they score a point. Now that Michigan has been exposed (a littler earlier than normal) VT gets my vote for most overrated team in the country. LSU is a much more balanced team across the board AND its in Baton Rouge. As a vol fan, I’d like to agree with Dacula Dawg. UT is 14-11 in its last 25 games, and that includes plenty of cupcakes. Tell me, other than MSU, at what SEC school is this acceptable for a head coach? Dacula LOL yeah kinda like Neyland south. Don’t matter whose boy QC was, he was billed as the next great thing, although they had to stop him from trying to snort the sideline. Don’t get me wrong, CMR is okay, and I predicted a 17pt win by the mutts last week. I predict a 2pt loss this week for the mutts. Look on the bright side of your season after you lose to the cocks, the Vols and Kentucky or Vandy again that the peach bowl is not a really long commute from Dacula. I will pull for the Dawgs against Bama, and the Gaytors, hell I would pull for the Taliban to beat the Tide and Gaytors.

General Neyland

best UGA QB “That’s not too difficult to accomplish”

Uh, Remember a guy named Fran Tarkenton?

he was the quarterback on the Bulldog football team, leading Georgia to the 1959 Southeastern Conference championship under legendary coach Wally Butts.

Voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1986, Tarkenton is widely considered one of the greatest quarterbacks of all-time due to his running and passing ability.

I would say that saying Stafford may be the bast UGA QB ever is really saying something!

And time will tell…Stafford may turn out to be the best.

By NASCARfan

September 7, 2007 3:04 PM | Link to this

Gen. Neyland, with all due respect, General Sir, I must disagree.

Coach Richt said Matt Stafford is the best QB he’s ever coached, not the best at Georgia. He hasn’t earned that distinction yet.

I’ll have to go with Fran Tarkenton, David Greene, and D.J. Shockley, in that order, for the best Georgia QBs as far as winning and talent goes.

But in the end, Matthew Stafford could very well be at the top of that list. He’ll need at least two SEC Titles to do so.

And for those wondering about Buck Belue, I’m sorry, but I said quarterbacks, not the guy who hands off to Herschal.

You mentioned to Dacula Dawg that the Peach Bowl isn’t too long of a drive from where he lives. You, being a Vol fan, should well be aware of that fact with your beloved Vols participating in and losing in back to back Peach Bowls against Maryland and Clemson. I loved it when Jabari “Peach Bowl Davis” became UT’s albatross after he was quoted that UT shoots for NC’s not Peach Bowls like UGA. That very same year UGA went to the SEC Championship while UT lost to Maryland…

Tony, I think you have it right, Ga. will struggle to hang on, you Dawg fans are just too sensitive, The Dawgs are not that good, way too many holes. The good thing for Ga. is that the Cocks have more holes and less talent. Michigan needs to win..badly. Notre Dame cannot win with their talent. Tennessee is not well coached and Phil is soon to be an EX-VOL coach. LSU looked horrible on offense except for that 2nd half drive. As for the other games LSU and VT will be closer than a lot of you think with LSU winning in a close, tough and hard fought game. Miss. State played pretty good on defense against the Bengal Tigers and actually beat themselves. As for Auburn and South Florida this will be a very close and hard fought game but Auburn is the more talented team and if they cut down on the missed assignments on their offensive line they will win, besides the word is out on the Bulls and they won’t be able to sneak up on anybody this year.

Tennessee will beat Southern Miss as they will come out playing like mad hornets after being embarrassed with being so pourous on defense last week. Alabama will win a close game with Vandy because they have their number. Look for GT to win but it will be a lot closer than it should because they are inconsistent and usually play down to the weaker team. Oklahoma and Miami will be a close game and I wouldn’t be surprised if Miami wins. Texas will beat TCU who just doesn’t have the horses to compete with the Longhorns. ND and Penn State this one is a hard one to call as I think Penn St is not as good as they looked last week- played a patsy and Norte Dame who looked terrible because they played a very good GT team. My gut tells me Penn State should win but somehow, someway ND might just win. Oregon and Michigan I wouldn’t want to be the Ducks because they are gonna lose to a bunch of mad and fired up Wolverines.

And I have already said in my above post that the Dawgs will win and if the Dawgs play the way they are capable it won’t be close. BTW I believe Ole Miss will give Missouri a pretty good game but will probably lose.

Tony, In 5 full seasons under Gailey, Tech has broken 40 points a total of 4 times, including 2 bowl blowouts. Chan may let them rack up some points in the first half, but he calls off the dogs at halftime. If all goes to plan, neither Bennett nor Choice will leave the sideline after halftime. Tech 35-13

Only half right on the VT-LSU matchup. It will be low scoring…for VT. LSU in a laugher.

I don’t calltwoo bad calls by the refs getting their butt kicked. The replay should have shown the ball was either deflected by the Dline or tipped. Rule books say when the Qbacks arm is coming forward the ball is a pass.

Replay shows also the punt runner took adavntage of three, count ‘em, three blocks in the back on his runback. Tennessee should have brought their own Refs to the game. At least they could have gotten a few good calls.

After Michigan’s fiasco last week, I can understand the doubt people have in their ability to rebound and legitimately compete for the Big 10 title. I will tell you, though, that between the incredible talent they have on offense, the desire to prove themselves after that embarrassment, and the pressure on the coaches, this Michigan team will be legitimate, even with questions on defense. Michigan -32(btw, it’s maize and blue “ring leader”) Oregon -24

Less than 24 hours to go and I have that nervous energy feeling I get just before any big game. You know, like I want to come out of a 4 point stance and knock someone’s helmet off. Anyway, Dawgs win a close one if they come out flat footed, if they are fired up, look out, it could get ugly quick. Cuz, could you please lead us in prayer before we eat our chicken dinner? GOOOO DAWGS!!! EAT MORE CHICKEN!

I don’t think this game is close unless the Dawgs turn the ball over. Can anyone name an area on offense where SC strikes fear. I can’t. The vision that comes to mind every time I think of the Ok St game is our DL. That unit played well. By mid year I see them being a major strength.

i am one who is worried about our ol, searles has done a super job but can we hold off those sec lineman and backers, our d will be fine and get maybe 8 sacks this game, a lot of sc cocks are gonna be in the mash unit afterwards,i hope stafford can execute the gameplan like he did against ok state, go you junkyard dawgs

I think Sperrier will beet us this year becuase Coach Rich ain’t as good as him. Plus Matt Stanford is still lerning how to be a good QB. It will be close but tehm Cocks will stick it to us.

Vol Man…totally agree. I have watched the game 2 times and there is NOT A DOUBT that many infractions against Cal were not called. Any wonder as it was a PAC 10 crew officiating??? That punt return had several illegal blocks. On 3 Tennessee pass plays, there was pass interference that was not called. I cannot argue with the fumble call as the ball landed behind Ainge. But the others were blatant. I do predict the Vols take the SEC East this year and possibly the SEC Crown!! Goooooooo Vols!!!!

I am going to change the subject for a minute. I see Coach Richt will be dressing Caleb King. I don’t understand why people have a problem with this. Just like Matt Stafford, if you’re that good, why keep him off the field especially now that Lumpkin will be out. I know that when Kregg returns, his carries may diminish but loosing the year won’t really make a difference. And don’t compare it to last year, since Thomas Brown didn’t go down until the 6th game of the year. Had it happened in the first game I am sure we would have seen Knowlshon Moreno last season. Yes, the red shirt does help, but given only two quality backs, King could be the X factor for a run at a championship.

Getting back to the topic at hand, most of these predictions are right on accept for one. I know that this SC game is always close this appears to be a special season. I have more confidence in the defence than I had before because of their ability to limit a very potent offense last week. I just don’t think Spurrier has enough weapons to stay with UGA. Georgia 35, South Carolina 7.

Tech wins 42 - 10 or whatever they decide to let them have.

UGA wins by less than 7, we’ll call it 21 -15.

Michigan beats Oregon 24-21.

VT and LSU, defensive battle all the way, I’ll go against the crowd and say 17-14 in favor of the Hokies.

ND and Penn St. will wind up 31-17, with Happy Valley happy.

I’m going with UAB to upset the Tigers but I have no clue on the score. I’ll guess 28-24 just to make it sporting.

Tony I am a die hard DAWG fan,and I understand how you feel about this game. I believe that UGA pull this game out because of their senior leadership. If you look at the OK STATE game all of the UGA seniors made big plays. Every USC fan I talk to says that USC sandbagged it vs ULL , but i’m going to tell you like I told them ( CHAMPIONS DON’T HAVE TO SANDBAG IT)

Not to worry Ga. fans. Dawgs get it done early and often. Stafford is going to show up big this year (even with the young O-line). UGA is a much more talented team than alot of people think. Ga. runs the table this year.

The people who think Spurrier is a better coach than Richt are just crazy. Spurrier is a very innovative offensive mind. Richt has all that and doesn’t do the intangibles that hurt a player’s psyche.

Richt knew UGA could play for SEC and Nat’l championships from day one. Spurrier still doesn’t believe USC can compete.

I have to agree with some of the posts I’ve been reading. What is the “love affair” with VT? I agree 100% that what happened on that campus is as tragic as it get’s for it was a very sad day. On a football basis VT’s football team is very over hyped. I think LSU will crush them today. SEC vs ACC, yes LSU will crush them today.

As for UT, hey, Cal played a great game. UT did not play bad. They will be strong no doubt. Too much talent.

As for our DAWGS, we should beat South Carolina by 10 to 14, but for some reason this game remains a tight game every year. You know Spurrier is pulling out all the stops to beat us. However, I do believe that Mr. Bobo has a few tricks under his sleeve as well. If we don’t turn the ball over we will be in good shape. GO DAWGS! 28-10

Who cares who wins. Its just more fun to pull against the dawgs because their gasbag blog fans go nuts. Its like Notre Dame. More fun to pull against them. Another example: Al Queda.

I love all the “bold predictions” when there is no money on the line. Wish I could find the guy who picked UGA 41-10. I’ll take USC and 31 points for $100,000.

Here we go again… Yellowblood a.k.a TOOL!

It must really suck to be part of the “Nerd Herd.” It must also really be frustrating knowing that your High School team will always be a distant second, even third, to the University of Georgia’s football program in the state of Georgia.

A reminder 15 out of the past 20 years! Six, soon to be seven, in a row.

Jay: Calm down. UGA is playing for no national championship. Not this year. Not next year.

Stafford is the best QB to ever play at UGA ? Pathetic. Go ahead and give him a fat head and watch what it does for him. Until UGA wins a nat. championship there is no reason to call anyone on this team the best ever. Earth-to- CMR: Run you mouth after you’ve done it.

YELLOW “TOOL” Blood

Again, your a MORON. Read the article you idiot. CMR said he is the best QB HE’S ever coached. Typical NERD. Get your facts right.

15 out of 20 and six in a row. Come back and blog when your High Scool team is consistant. In other words, we should never hear from you again.

Well, you boys just crapped in your diapers. GA SUXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXs. Stafford is a bozo. He missed open recievers, overthrew recievers and looked like a junior in high school. Good luck with this sorry team. Your defense SUXXXXXXXXs too. Your coach was in LA-LA land. SPURRIER RULESSSSSSSSSSSSS. Good night. Sleep tight.

My Fearless Friday forecasts:

Chan may let them rack up some points in the first half, but he calls off the dogs at halftime. If all goes to plan, neither Bennett nor Choice will leave the sideline after halftime. Tech 35-13

Only half right on the VT-LSU matchup. It will be low scoring…for VT. LSU in a laugher.

Oregon will beat UM handily. Oregon 28-10.

RESULTS:

Chan, according to pattern, called off the dogs BEFORE halftime. But, I didn’t realize how bad Samford was. They puked up points to our scrubs.

I think I nailed the LSU-VT and Oregon-Michigan games.

Bisher, Barnhart, Moore, Bradley, etc., I know it’s not your paper and it’s not your beloved Jackets or Dawgs or any other from the division “formally known as…”, but how do you totally ignore the sports of HBCU’s, particularly of those in your backyard? You do have readers that are interested in Morehouse and Clark-Atlanta sports. I’m on a military tour in the desert and can’t find a peep in my good AJC online.
