It’s okay to hate Spurrier, but…..
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just one man’s opinion:
1. It’s okay to hate Steve Spurrier: But when you do that, you’re playing right into his hands. Ever notice that before a big game Spurrier almost always does something that gets people writing and talking about him? That is his way of deflecting pressure from his team and putting it on him. That is one reason why his teams tend to be more relaxed and play well in the big games. And Saturday’s trip to Athens is a big game.
2. Lloyd Carr didn’t forget how to coach: There is no getting around the fact that Michigan should not lose to Appalachian State at home. I get that. But now people are talking about Carr like he is some doofus who couldn’t coach Pop Warner football. Remember that if Michigan makes one more play and doesn’t lose to Ohio State (42-39), the Wolverines would have been in Glendale, Ariz., playing for the national championship last season. Carr and his staff did a lousy job getting their team ready for Appalachian State. There is no getting around that. But understand this: Michigan will not fire Lloyd Carr.
3. The next few weeks are important to Bobby Bowden: After investing hundreds of thousands of dollars into new coaches, his team came out and laid an egg in the first half against Clemson. Couldn’t tackle on defense. Couldn’t block anybody on offense. It was a team that looked dazed and confused until the second half. Maybe that was an aberration. But for the money that has been invested, the Seminoles need to show their fans something Saturday against UAB.
4. Notre Dame will be lucky to win six. In preseason Notre Dame looked like an 8-4 or 7-5 team. Based on what we saw Saturday against Georgia Tech, 6-6 is starting to look pretty good right now. At $3 million per year for coach Charlie Weis, it doesn’t seem like Notre Dame should be this short on talent. But this looks like the gap in Tyrone Willingham’s recruiting. The spin out of South Bend is that starting next year, when QB Jimmy Clausen will be a sophomore, Weis’s recruiting classes will start to kick in. With road trips to Penn State and Michigan coming up, 0-3 looks really possible. The fact that Weis is going to start a true freshman quarterback (Clausen) at Penn State this week is telling.
5. Alabama fans should be cautious: Don’t read too much into the 52-6 win over Western Carolina. The Crimson Tide played with a lot of energy and that was to be expected. But that defensive front seven is thin and the backups are even thinner. Alabama’s defense is going to struggle to stop some of the better teams in this league. Will they be good enough to hold down Vanderbilt on the road this Saturday? Stay tuned

Puzzling article, Tony.
Lloyd Carr is gone short of running the table the rest of the year. You don’t lose national title hopes in week 1 vs. a gimme. He was somewhat on the hot seat BEFORE Saturday.
So blame Willingham’s recruiting for what happened with the Irish? Wow…Weis has been there for 2 recruiting classes. Georgia sure looks like they have a lot of young talent ready to play. Florida sure looks like it does as well. So the mystique of Notre Dame and a Super Bowl coach isn’t enough to secure great young talent. You’re off base, bro.

Sorry Tony, but I think you are wrong about Lloyd Carr. If he loses two more games and particularly if he loses to Ohio State I would bet the farm he is gone. At some point,a few empty seats in that stadium are going to signal the death knell. Fans have too much pride.
I am a loyal Vol fan, but Fulmer cannot rest on his past laurels either. If he does not win the SEC East (preferably the SEC period) and loses another bowl game to a lower ranked opponent, he could be shown the door too. The regular season last year and bringing Coach Cut back bought him some time, but that bowl fiasco put him back on the hot seat.
It is ALWAYS about “what have you done for me laely”.

What surprises me about FSU is how far their talent level has fallen. FSU was out-athleted Monday night by Clemson. That simply should not happen given the fertile recruiting in Florida, no matter who the coaches are. Getting out-coached with a largely new staff can be excused, for a time. But FSU having inferior players is inexcuseable, even with the previous and current coaching problems, and points to a problem at FSU that has existed for several years now.

Spurrier didn’t start the hate thing. The AJC started that with a poll for whatever reason. (Not that I like him)

Steve Spurrier is the best.
I wouldn’t trade Tubby for much but CSS sure would be interesting.
Vandy will play Bama to the WIRE.
How many Bama fans does it take to raise $35,000 for charity?
Just about 92,000.
That’s $0.38 per fan.
That tells you a lot about the BAMMER nation when it’s paying some over priced baby sitter 4 mill a yr and they can’t raise $.50 a fan at a free spring game. The money they were raising was for Enterprise High School after the tornado.
Peachtree Pres here in Atl held a concert for the same cause and 1500 people raised almost half as much as 92,000 of the Bammer Nation.
Around the bowl and down the hole- Role Tide Roll.
What a fine lot.

Spurrier always does something before each game? He didn’t write the poll question about being the most hated, you (AJC) did to raise controversy. What would you expect a mostly Georgia readership to say? Duh!

Hey Aubie,
Fact: There were only a few money takers at the spring game. No way to anticipate that kind of crown, and noone knew they were there.
Fact: Your rain is OVER. Thank the NCAA for your little streak and you might even tack one on this year. Face it, Out of the top 20 players in the state this year we have 15 commitments to your 0! Goose Egg, buh bye, it’s been fun, enjoy your trip back to mediocrity, and maybe you can hide behind Tubby’s ears.

Tony, you’re wrong about Carr.
That National Championship he won? With the other guy’s players.
His recruiting classes have been overrated. How? Because the guys who rate recruits rate them (the star system) based on who is going after them. Ohio State and Michigan want this guy? He must be a 4 or 5 star recruit!
Ohio State was proven to be a slow, plodding team on it’s defensive and offensive lines last year. Michigan was proven to be slow throughout it’s whol defense and offensive line last year.
What changed in the interrim 9 months? Not a damn thing. I’ve been saying for a month that Michigan shouldn’t have even been rated in the top-15.
A bad coach, a slow, inexperienced defense. A slow, plodding offensive line. That is not the recipe for success.
Every single one of the Big-ZERO teams are overrated, just like VaTech’s defense was overrated last year (how good is a defense that dominates a pitiful conference?).
You writers are the real problem in college football, and the coach’s poll isn’t any better. They either copy YOUR poll or they vote to help their buddies out. How could you bunch of numbskulls overrate a team that got exposed in their bowl game as being a product of their ridiculously easy conference and then losing 7 players off of that overrated defense? How they hell were they going to get better?

To the HIG,
Fact: Rain is a word to describe the weather. Reign would be the word you are looking for. I hope for the Crapstone’s sake you are a walk-on fan.
You may want to look at the fact that Alabama usually signs the majority of talent in Alabama. Unfortunately that talent is nowhere near the equivalent of GA or FL where Auburn signs much of their class.

Great retorts bloggers!!! I would concur that Tony it is your employer who banters the hate myth. I have found more than a fair share of UGA fans who, like me, are glad that the Head Ball Coach is back in the SEC where he truly belongs. Obviously you underestimate the ability of most true UGA fans to see through the smoke of the “poor ol USC” and “guess we’re just a bunch of stiffs” comments. We, along with the UGA Coaches and players, know that the Cocks will roll into AThens with plenty of juice. You obviously disrespect our Coaches ability to point out how USC came within a blocked field goal from beating the eventual NC Gators in the “swamp”. Also, you failed to listen to Coach Richt yesterday at his press conference when he made specific reference to Coach Spurrier and his system and how he finds ways to exploit teams using his schemes. I think Coach Richt has a wealth of background from which to pull from regarding the Ol’ Ball Coach. My faith lies in our Coaches and players to do what they do best to influence the outcome of Saturday nights game, not some moronic AJC poll. Speaking of Charlie Weis was I alone in noticing that 7 of the D starters for ND are Sr’s. Whew ND!!! You really sold your souls for those BCS games you clearly didn’t deserve. 30+ at home from a nonranked team led by a new starting QB does not bode well for the rest of the year. It’s OK you can still hang your hat on that close loss to USC!!! Bwahhhhhhhhhh

Petey boy,
Thanks again for the vocab lesson. I’m sure you’ve never misspelled anything typing a quick email.
Check the latest US News and WR college rankings for where “The Crapstone” fairs amongst it’s close rivals.
Among our 18 verbals this year 4 are from GA and FL. We just plucked a kid out of Norcross who was a sure thing for the Dawgs. Alabama just happens to be a hotbed this year and nobody seems to be running towards the cow pastures….I can already smell Auburn, and it’s only September.

Hig:
Gotta love BAMMER logic.
The money takers were overwhelmed with the turnout and underwhelmed with the results.
I read an article by one of the B’ham news channels that said the same thing and so Bammer asked its fans to send in the money in the name of Bammer to the school. To date they had raised an extra $5000.
I gave 10% of that myself but certainly not in the name of BAMMER!!
That’s generosity at its Bammer best!!

Ed….Just more typical Aubneck comments from the Aubneck leader on the AJC blogs!! I dont recall seeing how much money AU raised for the same cause? More likely because they didn’t. $0.38/person is not very good but it is much better than $0.00 that AU raised for Enterprise!
As for the team itself, we are thin on D and it will show as we get into the SEC matchups. Do you actually think Cox will make it the whole season with the beating he took on Sat? Ziemba much has been giving his best Chris Capps inpersonation. Your OL will be a complete disaster this year which will lead your O in the same direction!!!

First of all Cousin Eddie, that was the worst post I’ve ever read.
Petey, kudos to you if your a GA grad. Good school, good program, and it’ll stay that way with Richt there. Sure we’re still a little thin from our near death experience, all I’m referring to is the seismic shift in the Alabama balance of power. 7-5 is a reality, but it really doesn’t matter. LSU and Auburn will begin the plunge back to earth this year with disappointing 2 or 3 loss seasons. There will be an outcry for the huge head of Les, and he’ll bolt for Michigan leaving the Tiger’s battling it out for 3rd in the west. Auburn’s done as well, looking northwest at big brother dreaming of holding up “the thumb” wishing Shula still roamed the probation ladened sidelines. Don’t believe me? Ask the man at the top of the page.

D.Ellis…Lets get some facts straight… Last time you came to our house you won by a field goal at the end of the game. The next year you guys beat us up in Athens. Very similar to the meetings in 1994 and 1995 where we won by a FG goal with less than 1:30 left and the following year we won something like 31-6. Overall BAMA owns the series with UGA and I expect we will increase our lead in 3 weeks. ROLL TIDE!!!

I am sick of hearing how this year’s Notre Dame team is not Weiss’, this lousy team belongs to Ty. What about the last 2 season’s players, who did they belong to?
Additionally, Ty was only allowed 3 seasons before being fired. According the the Notre Dame faithful (as heard this year), such firing was unjust as Ty Willingham did not have time to implement his players in his system.
Facts are facts, Ty Willingham was 21-15 with Bob Davie’s boys, given what I saw on Saturday, Charlie Weiss will be lucky to have the same record at the end of this year with superior talent.

Agree with Shane above. One further note about Fulmer: not only did he not win at least one NC with the nation’s best QB, he didn’t even win ONE game against Florida with him. And before anyone ‘dog UGA about UF, at least Greene and Company had ONE win against the Gators. Look at where Manning is today and think about his not beating UF while at UT! Keep on coachin’ Phil. Mr College Football, I think Carr had his contract changed last year. I can’t remember the exact change but it was a politcally correct change that set him up to pretty much retire this year and settle into Bo’s old office as Coach Emeritus. THIS was the swan song year with ALL the talent coming back, Henne, Hart, Manningham etc. Rumor has it that Bo has risen from the dead to reclaim his office.

I hate the Gators. Always have. Hated them when the Dawgs owned them, hate them just the same now that they own the Dawgs. But even though Spurrier got all of that recent Gator dominance started, I don’t hate him for some reason. For one thing, he is a great coach who brought an exciting brand of football to the SEC. Also, he is a great quote and a refreshing change from all of the usual coach speak. Don’t hate him, just BEAT him like Richt has done the past two seasons. That’s the best revenge.
