Projecting the BCS bowls

The first BCS standings don’t come out until Oct. 14. But let’s go ahead and get the argument started today. Here, gentle readers, are the projected BCS Bowl matchups for the 2007 season.

BCS CHAMPIONSHIP, JAN. 7, NEW ORLEANS

Matchup: Southern Cal vs. West Virginia

How it happens: No. 1 Southern Cal rolls through its schedule without breaking a sweat. West Virginia gets a scare from Louisville at home but finishes 12-0. West Virginia gets pushed in the BCS Standings by once-beaten LSU, Texas, Oklahoma, and Michigan but holds on to play in the big game.

ORANGE BOWL, JAN. 3, MIAMI

Matchup: Florida State vs. Oklahoma

How it happens: Florida State wins the ACC championship game over Georgia Tech. Oklahoma finishes 11-1 with its only loss to Texas on Oct. 6.

FIESTA BOWL, JAN. 2, GLENDALE, ARIZ.

Matchup: Texas vs. Wisconsin

How it happens: Texas wins the Big 12 championship but a stumble at Texas A&M on Nov. 23 keeps the Longhorns out of the BCS championship game. Wisconsin finishes 11-1 for the second consecutive season and this time the Badgers get a BCS at-large.

ROSE BOWL, JAN. 1, PASADENA

Matchup: Michigan vs. California

How it happens: Michigan wins the Big Ten despite losing to Ohio State on Nov. 17. California loses twice-to Tennessee on Sept. 1 and to Southern Cal on Nov. 10. Still, the Bears get the at-large Rose Bowl bid at 10-2 because they were squeezed out by Texas in 2004.

SUGAR BOWL, JAN. 1, NEW ORLEANS

Matchup: LSU vs. Louisville.

How it happens: LSU loses at Alabama on Nov. 3, which keeps the Tigers out of the BCS championship game. LSU beats Florida for the SEC championship to finish 12-1. Louisville goes 11-1 with a loss at West Virginia.

YES BOCEPHUS I AM READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL

LSU loses to Alabama?

LSU maybe loses to AU, UF or Ark but not Alabama.

Alabama will be playing in the Music City Bowl this year and you’re telling me that they will beat LSU.

Those Sr LSU players will have so much to play for on Nov 3 against Satan that there is no way they lose.

And besides Satan will all ready be rumored for the Cowboys job by then and his bags will be packed.

Couldn’t happen to nicer fans.

If they do happen to beat LSU I wonder how many trailers will be knocked off their cinder blocks by all the excitement?

MOON PIES and RC COLA will be sold out all over the state for the celebration.

WAR EAGLE!

Thank you lord for football.

Only one of the ten teams you named is from the SEC. The undisputed best conference in the country gets reamed again while the Big East, Big 12, Big 10/11, and Pac 10 have two teams each. I’m not saying you’re wrong. In fact, you are quite likely correct. But that doesn’t make it any less of a shame. Oh well. At least Notre Dame won’t be laughably invited to a BCS bowl again this year…I hope.

Tech will hopefully ensure that they shouldn’t get invited by defeating them on Saturday :)

I can’t imagine Louisville getting an at-large. Cal to the Rose, ‘Sconsin to the Fiesta, and OU to the Orange would make sense as at-large picks because they all would travel to the venue. I think, though, the Sugar (which has the last pick because they have the Championship Game) would take a 1 or 2 loss VA Tech team over UL.

You’re right there are a lot more Bamer fans out there than AU fans.

LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR

If you are an AU or Tech fan you pretty much either went to the school or someone in your family did.

If you are a Bamer fan or Dog fan more then likely you have never set foot on campus outside of game day.

Inferiority?

Fear the ring finger.

How many Bamer fans does it take to raise $32,000?

92,000

Yeah I’m jealous.

Short version Bama’s missing players and Tech’s missing a coach. Bama got a coach instead of the moron son of Shula, but he still needs some horses. They haven’t been able to out-recruit Auburn at Hoover for years now, they’ll be lucky to finsih within 14 of LSU. And I know last’s year’s ACC championship was an unpredictable joke, but Tech? Please.

Ed…Your wishful thinking is great!! Fear the Ring finger? For what? Another Peoples National Championship??? Let me remind you of a few things. 1. AU has NOT won a NC in 50 years; 2. Your coach has the same number of SEC titles as Mike Dubose; 3. Your current recruiting class sucks while Alabama is now top 10 and will likely finish top 5 - Good thing you have all those guys who didn’t qualify…if not your class would be embarrassing. I know you cannot stand that BAMA has a great coach now and he did in less time at LSU what Wingnut couldnt do in 9 at Moo U. You can be rest assured that as soon as Wingnut loses to the Tide at home this year, your Lowder will have that plane out looking for a new coach. Afterall, it is not championships that motivate AU, it is beating Alabama.

ROLL TIDE!!!

Barnhart is an over paid load mouth idiot that like all the rest of the media, and he is in love with pac-10 wuz’s West Virginia, Please!! the Big East is no push over but they do not compare to the SEC. And any conference that does not have a title game does not deserve a BCS championship game appearance.

By DaddyDawg

August 29, 2007 2:04 PM | Link to this

Tony:

Where in the world did you come up with FSU winning the Almost Competitive Conference (ACC)? Va. Tech has to be the favorite until someone proves differently. As for GT making the ACC Championship game, I actually think that this is a distinct possibility if Bennett can build on his previous performances at QB and can find a few quality receivers to throw the ball to after losing Calvin Johnson. Answer these questions and Tech could have a very good year with their returning experience and talent on both sides of the ball.

Lord knows that we do not need to see WV play USC…. USC would score 100+ points against that WV (lack of) defense! Have to believe that either Louisville or Rutgers is a better total team than WV.

And an idea for future consideration. No BCS conference should get 2 teams in the BCS without playing a conference championship. Allowing Michigan and Wisconsin to play in the BCS, as you predict, after finishing their schedule in mid November without a conference championship is a joke. Teams that have conference championships have a tougher time making a BCS bowl, but they should not be penalized for playing for a conference championship, especially for the championship of a conference of the quality of the SEC. The Pac 10 President has basically admitted that playing a conference championhip game would hurt their conference’s chances of making the BCS championship game, and the same reasoning applies to BCS bowl games.

Who cares? Winning a bowl is nothing more than winning an additional game from someone you probably haven’t played that season. Is being the Pizza Hut, AJC, Honda, Cingular Bowl Champions really that special? Until there is a playoff system where we can have a true champion, I’ll stick with FCS (other wise known as I-AA)

SECisFootball, isn’t is sad that the iron bowl is no longer Auburn’s biggest game? It’s not even in the top three. UGA is their biggest rivaly, they give us a game every other year as does LSU and Arkansas. Bamer is just sad that they are still trying to live off their past accomplishments. Yes, we’re really worried about your recruiting class, just as we have been the past five years. I’m glad you are playing the game in the recruiting mags, it makes it easier to kick your a$$ again for the sixth time in a row. WAR EAGLE!

I laugh at BAMA fans who try to say Moo U is not our biggest rival and I laugh at Moo U fans who say that BAMA is not theirs. As I said…At Alabama we hope to win titles. At Moo U, you hope to beat BAMA. I hope you enjoyed the state of BAMA program over the last 5 years because that is all over now!! It wont be too long before you AD, Bobby Lowder, will be searching for a new coach. ROLL TIDE and Go Kansas State!!

SECisFootball, yes, and this is the same thing you from UAT have been saying each of the last 5 years. You say “I laugh at those who say UAT or AU are not the biggest rivals”, but you are probably one of those thousands of UAT fans that never went to school there. Having actually gone to Auburn I can tell you that GA is a bigger rivalry due to the proximity, makeup of students at each school. Of course a UAT person wouldn’t know that. Keep living in your “not going to happen this year” and your “we’ve got 12 NC” dream world.

fsu has lost at least 2 games every year in the acc since 2001 and continues to “play until the whistle” when your not ahead by two touchdowns you can’t afford the numerous personal fouls that they tradionally get. they will lucky to win 8 games this year. also what happens if these coaching changes don’t work. i believe the titanic has hit the iceberg and they don’t realize yet. go terps

Chris…Contrary to your thoughts, I actually did attend and graduate from THE University of ALABAMA in 1997. Sorry to disappoint you. And FYI, I can say that the vast majority of the people I know who are fans of Moo U, have on stepped foot on campus as just that…fans. So I guess that proves the Moo U theory of everyone who is a Moo U fan went to school there? Again…sorry to disappoint you. As for your thoughts on UGA being a bigger rivalry, I sure that is really the case. If you believe that, you are a fool!! ROLL TIDE!!!

For 2006, Barnhart said that JaMarcus Russell whould start the season as LSU’s quarterback but would go to the sidelines shortly. Futher, he stated that Bama would lose 3 of it’s four road games with the lone win being at LSU. Tony, thanks for brightening my day by confirming that LSU will once again beat the PayRoll Tide with your pick.

LSU has all this talent and no rings because Les Miles is the southern version of Ron Zook.

WVU has reloaded the defense and has two Heisman candidates on offense. You SEC folks have fun with your conference games because IF any of you get to face WVU in a bowl, history will repeat itself again.

SECisFootball.. I realize you are young, supposedly graduating in ‘97, so here’s a history lesson for you at no charge:

This pretty much tells the story of Bamer’s mythical 12 NCs….

1925 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with Dartmouth. Who awarded the NC? Houlgate and Helms. Houlgate started his system in 1927. So Bama won their 1925 NC using a formula that didn’t exist until 1927? Helms Athletic Foundation started in 1941. Another incredible retroactive NC. The Associated Press Poll has been active since 1936. The AP took their final poll prior to bowl games from 1936 - 1964 and in 1966 and 1967. They took their final poll after the bowl games in 1965 and from 1968 - Current.

1926 National Championship- Alabama claims they share this one with 3 other teams with equal or better records! Once again it is the Helms Athletic Foundation in 1941 that awards it!

1930 National Championship- The Davis poll says that Bama tied Notre Dame for NC this year. This was the only one to award it to Bama. Notre Dame was named NC in 6 polls! Parke Davis is another retroactive system! He (an individual, not an organization) did his in 1933!

1934 National Championship- Alabama says they share this with two other teams. The awarders are Dunkel, Williamson, and Football Thesaurus. Dunkel was an individual who came up with his own system. Williamson was a geologist who came up with his own system. Football Thesaurus first appeared in 1946!

1941 National Championship- This is a complete joke. The AP ranked Alabama 20th in the nation with 14 teams with better records in the top 20. Once again it is the Football Thesaurus that retroactively awards it. Alabama finished 3rd in the SEC that year. Mississippi State won the SEC title..yet Bama claims a National title!

1961 National Championship- Finally a legitimate NC. .

1964 National Championship- While the AP did award the NC to Bama (10-1-0), Arkansas had the better record, 11-0. Alabama played Texas in their bowl and LOST. The AP final poll was before the bowl.

1965 National Championship- The AP gave this to Bama. That year there were three teams with better records than Bama. Bama 9-1-1, Michigan St 10-1-0, Arkansas 10-1-0, Nebraska 10-1-0.

1973 National Championship- AP puts Bama 4th after their bowl game loss. Bama claims a NC from the UPI poll that was taken before they met Notre Dame in the bowl game and lost. There were 3 teams with better records than Bama that year. The embarrassment of naming Alabama number one caused the UPI to name champions after bowl games. Yet Bammer has no shame in claiming it of course.

1978 National Championship- AP gives this to Alabama(11-1-0) even though USC (12-1-0) had the better record Guess who Alabama lost to that year? USC!!!!!!!!!. UPI gave the NC to USC.

1979 National Championship- Their second legitimate NC. Their first Unanimous NC.

1992 National Championship- Their third legitimate NC. Their second Unanimous NC.

You can see why people ridicule Bama fans when they talk about 12 NCs. The early ones were awarded by individuals years after the games were played. These weren’t consensus polls but NCs awarded by people that had their own formula for determining champions. Some NCs were given before bowl games that Bama lost. Using Alabama logic, Auburn could claim four national championships. But when Bammers brag they like to say they have twelve and Auburn has one. How silly. The NCAA recognizes 6 NCs for Bama and there are only two NCs that Bama has unanimously. You can’t find an Auburn site claiming four national championships but there are plenty Bama sites claiming twelve. Debunking the Alabama National Championship myths. At the same time, Auburn could claim at least 5 national titles using the Bammer methods.

1913- Auburn went 8-0 and claimed the NC in the Billingsley Poll.

1957-AP national Champions.

1983-Auburn went 11-1, played the nation’s toughest schedule, and won the national title in The New York Times, Sagarin, Billingsley, Rothman and College Football Researchers Association

1993-Auburn went 11-0 and won the national title by the National Championship Foundation .

2004- Auburn became only the second team in SEC history to go 13-0. Auburn even beat SEC East champion Tennessee twice. Auburn was awarded the national title by the first People’s National Championship Poll, Golf Digest, and The Eufaula Times. AUBURN only claims the 1957 national title. HOWEVER..IF Alabama can claim some of the ones that they claim, we have ever right to claim the ones above.

Chris…An AU fan calling a BAMA fan a redneck just make me think of the Pot-Kettle analogy. I am not in any way commenting on Alabama’s past. I am happy about the fact that we have on and am making fun of the fact that AU’s past doesn’t really exist much past 5 years ago. Say what you want about our spring game. I find it funny that OSU and USC both had over 70,000 but since we had 92,000, we are somehow at fault. Fact is, people are excited about BAMA football both in the Alabama nation as well as around the country. It is why Alabama is getting some much positive publicity and AU is just not being talked about. I know I know. AU is just flying under the radar, blah, blah, blah. You know the coaches and player hate the fact that they are getting no publicity when a team they have beaten for 5 srtaight years is the talk of the country. If you don’t believe that, you didnt watch any of ESPN’s college football coverage last night. As for BAMA sucking for the last 10 years…you are right. We have been below average. However, in those 10 years we have 3 10 win season and an SEC title. I am pretty sure you far superior school cannot claim anything more than that, huh? What does that say about your school? But hey, at least you guys have beaten BAMA 5 straight. Afterall, that all that matters down on the pasture!

As far as history goes, the school claims 12 national titles and that is recognized in most print media and tv media. If you want to claim less, I am ok with that. Take are 3 or 4 from us and take away those 3 you claim, then we still have accomplished something your beloved cow school never will.

Some interesting picks in light of the first 2 weeks of football! FSU to go bowling? Maybe but it wont be as the ACC champs.

Unless Oklahoma spits the bit, they look a LOT better than Texas right now.

USC wont breeze through there schedule.

Michigan in the Rose? Wow, a LOT and I mean A LOT will have to change with that football team for them to win the big ten… right now they are looking more and more like a non bowl qualifier than they are a conference champion
