Five moments that will define the SEC
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Just about every school has a defining moment in their season. It is a game, a group of games or a moment within a game that tips the balance of the season towards great, good, mediocre or bad.
Last season I thought that moment for Florida came at home on the last play against South Carolina. Florida blocked a field goal, won the game 17-16, and then went on to put itself in position to win the national championship.
Here are five such potential moments for teams in the SEC.
1. Georgia: The first two games with Oklahoma State (Sept. 1) and South Carolina (Sept. 8) will set the tone for the entire season. Win them both and I think the Dawgs will be 5-0 when they go to Knoxville on Oct. 6. Confidence is going to be a huge factor with this team because there are so many young players.
2. Alabama: Starting on Sept. 8, the Crimson Tide plays these games on four consecutive Saturdays: at Vanderbilt, Arkansas and Georgia in Tuscaloosa and then Florida State in Jacksonville. If Alabama goes 2-2 in those games, it will have a good season. If it goes 1-3, Bama will struggle to make a bowl. If it goes 3-1, watch out.
3. Tennessee: Some are picking the Vols to have a pretty good year if they can survive the first three weeks which includes trips to No. 12 California (Sept. 1) and No. 6 Florida (Sept. 15) that sandwich a dangerous home game with Southern Mississippi (Sept. 8), the favorite to win Conference USA. If Tennessee doesn’t get too beat up in those three games, the Vols could run the table after that with Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Vanderbilt all in Knoxville.
4. Arkansas: Houston Nutt’s quality of life would really improve if the Hogs beat Troy in the opener, take a week off to heal, and then find a way to win at Alabama on Sept. 15. There is a portion of the Arkansas fan base that is still unhappy with the way the Mitch Mustain situation was handled. They are looking for a reason to criticize and turn up the heat. If Arkansas loses to Bama, they’ll have their reason.
5. South Carolina: When South Carolina beats Georgia, it usually means the Gamecocks are going to have a good season. Since 1984 the Gamecocks have beaten the Bulldogs seven times and only once (1993) did they fail to produce a winning record. Four of the best seasons in school history-1984 (10-2, Gator Bowl), 1988 (8-4, Liberty Bowl), 2000 (8-4, Outback Bowl), and 2001 (9-3, Outback Bowl)-were all set up by a September win over Georgia. South Carolina plays at Georgia on Sept. 8.

It is going to be a great year in Athens! People forget that we have loaded up on talent just like TX, OSU, UF, etc…all of our classes have pretty much been Top 5 the last few years.

Hey BadDawg…0-3 is right, except you have the wrong team. It will be the stinking Dawgs that will be 0-3. Ainge will slice up the Georgia defense in Knoxville likie a Ginsu steak knife. I guess the alcohol and drugs have eased your memory of the 51 points hung on your pathetic pooches in Athens last year, huh? Lets see who is at the big SEC dance in Atlanta come December. It won’t be the doggies! You will be seeing lots of ORANGE around town!!

South Carolina fans are always talk itup each year before the Georgia game. When they usually lose, they go back into their holes until the next year.

Fat Phil, no we haven’t forgotten about UT beating us last year, but you must have forgotten that Mark Richt has yet to lose in Knoxville. This year will be our 4th win in a row at Sanford North. Don’t expect 3 or 4 gift wrapped turnovers like last year.

Tony I think you are missing the boat. True the dawgs have to get off to a good start as they do every year but OSU should prove little challenge and the SC won’t be able to get it done again this year regardless of Spurriers rhetoric. He’s forgotten he’s not in Florida anymore Toto. Georgia’s defining moment and the pivot of the season should come in Knoxville. It’ll take a win over the Vols to carry some momentum into the Florida game. This provided they win the other games they are expected and supposed to.

Vols msay be 1-2 or quite possibly 2-1, but solace is taken in the fact that they will most assuredly lay an “a* whipping” of epic proportion on the Dawgs. Can’t wait

Here we go again, one week before the season kicks off and the puppy breeders are a’barkin. Better get ‘em in while you can ‘cause that 0-2 start will knock all the breath out of you quicker than the Vols laid 51 on you last year…and losses to Bama, Vols, Gators and Tigers will have you all looking up at the rest of the SEC East…woof.

Phil, slim down will ya? What happened in K-town the last few times the Dawgs have visited? Let’s not worry about the past. Your troubles are in the future son. But it is indeed fun to hear him run his mouth about how, the ‘Cocks are going to beat us this year, blah, blah, blah and then when UGA beats them again, we never hear from him until next year at the same time. UT’s start to the 2007 campaign begins with TWO top 15 teams in THREE games. Both of those on the road. That being said, it’s a hellava tougher opening to the season than most of the SEC programs. Do I expect to win them both..? Sure do. What fan of what program thinks otherwise..? I am aware we could be 3-0, 2-1, 0-3 by the end of this run, though…Anybody remember the whipping Vinny and the Miami Hurricanes were suppose to put on us back in the 80’s..? In that matchup, all the Canes had to do was whip us little boys and lay claim to the # 1 ranking at seasons end…didn’t happen as we left with a 35-7 W…We owned the night…Surprises may await those that see our personnel losses at WR as a weakness this year…For we are WRU…Good Luck Dawgs against OSU…

MARK MY WORDS, SCAR WILL BEAT UGA This isn’t the same rhetoric as before because there is credibility behind it. We’ve consistently improved and should have no problem beating the snot out of the dogs…no pun intended, Mr.Vick!
We have a topflight LBs to run down those 10 UGA RBs. And if UGA tries to throw (and I hope they do), they will pay because we have the fastest secondary in the SEC East.
And we have one of the brightest coaching minds in college football history…that’s not up for debate UGA fans. He won more in the 90s than UGA has in the last 50 years!
Even before the Scar game, UGA will probably get beat by OSU!!

Fat Phil, You talking about the 51 points or as GTDC put it, the size 51’s you hung up in our locker room?
General, You do open with a PAC-10 team? Which will be called previously ranked #12 after you guys get done with them. And Brett Farve isn’t playing at So. Miss anymore. Florida? Now that will be a game.

PeckMe, It’s not the same rhetoric we’ve heard before. In spite of freshmen errors our True freshman QB beat you last yr. at your place. Our “D” shut SOS out for the 1st time since who knows? you’ll be dealing with an Offense the like of which you never seen. That Freshman learned, grew up and show AU, Tech and Va. TECH just how much he’d picked up. I also think SC may well end up 2 or 3rd in the East but you can’t beat the Dawgs. Wish you well in your season and welcome to Athens. Home of the “BOMB”!

Tony, Tony, Tony. OK, I really don’t get any pleasure from slapping you every day, and I actually thought today as I read your column that I would for once agree with most everything — BUT then I noticed something; You stated that “Win them both and I think the Dawgs will be 5-0 when they go to Knoxville on Oct. 6”. Then you go on to say ” If Tennessee doesn’t get too beat up in those three games, the Vols could run the table after that with Georgia, South Carolina, Arkansas, and Vanderbilt all in Knoxville.” Need I remind ‘MR. COLLEGE FOOTBALL’ Tennessee hasn’t beaten Georgia in KNOXVILLE since Mark Richt has been at Georgia?? In fact, Tennessee hasn’t beaten Georgia in Knoxville since Tee Martin was QB. Wow. And how much does the ajc pay you for this ‘stuff’??

Hey Pecker… Ditto Buck in th NW comments. If I were you, I would not be talking about the number of football wins our football team has had in the last 50 years, especially with the “history” that sorry football team you root for has. You guys have taken losing football to an art form. Your brighest football mind got shut out last year by one of our worst teams, and a freshman QB in the “cockpit.” Peck on that.

Puleezeeee…PeckMe your dreaming. The Ole Ball Coach has had a successful past in FLORIDA. I despise him and he is still a good coach. Just not good enough to pull off in SC what he did in FL. Quasimoto could have been a successful coach at Florida in the 90’s.

South Carolina, where old coaches go to pad their retirement funds. How about Mitchell getting relieved of his duties? Bet he plays against LALA U. Something about taking care of it internally will be SOS’s spill. Because he sure heck won’t come off the bench with no PT to do anything against us. SOS better strap em’ on and start throwing.

Gen, I predicted Tenn would win East last month, I still believe they will play LSU for the title. I thought Florida would finish higher than UGA. I change my mind, UGA(10-2) must beat Florida to finish second and I think they will(24-14)…. LSU will “walk” in the West, Auburn(8-4) is West 2008 and 2009 winner. CTT has recruited strong the last two years at OL, DL and QB. Auburn could possible have a NC bid in 2009.

War Eagle , I agree w/ your assessment of the SEC West. I see AU & LSU being the top-tier of the West for the next few years, at least. I predicted AU will win 8-10 this year, and LSU will go 11-1, losing in an upset game at Kentucky. I believe the East will be between TENN & UGA, and FLA falling off to 2nd or 3rd in the East. I believe that UGA wins the game in Knoxville, but any slip-ups could vault TENN to match up w/ LSU in the SEC Chmpshp game. UGA should beat SC, get revenge on Vandy & Kentucky, beat ALA & Ole Miss, and having the bye-week before the FLA game AND the fact that FLA plays @ LSU, then hosts Kentucky will help propel UGA past FLA. You’ll be glad to know if the season goes as I predict, UGA should very well slip up against AU. I hope not though. GO DAWGS!!!

I think your having a serious rush to judgement if you believe LSU won’t be contested in the West. I for one am not so easily convinced. They still have to play the games. Buck in NW: Stafford did not beat SC last year…We beat ourselves (two trips to goal line and no points). Stafford threw five picks and did everything he could to LOSE the game….One offensive touchdown does not a rout make!!!
I think the GA offensive line and the SC offensive line will be the keys to this year’s game. Neither one has had a great spring.
I predict another typical low-scoring GA-SC game.
SC 20, UGA 17.
GO COCKS!!!!

ON DIFFERENT BLOGS THROUGH OUT ‘07 I’VE MADE DAWG FANS MAD AT ME FOR SAYING WHAT I’VE SAID; HOWEVER, WE NEED TO GET A COUPLE OF YOUR POINTS CORRECTED. hahahahaha some of these blogs are really funny! hahahaaha
Mr Barnhart, if you are really the “college football” guru then show us your skill set by touching on EVERY team in the conference, not just a few of them.
Basically this season is going to come down to what it always does and no matter how much turnover each program has, every year you can count on GA, FLA, or TENN coming from the EAST and either LSU, BAMA, or AUB coming from the WEST. That is usually how it shakes out unless some fluke happens which is every now and then but won’t be this year. All of you delirious SOUTH CAROLINA fans need to sit down and shut up!!
Barring injuries, the SEC title game in December will be either GA, FLA, or TENN vs LSU or BAMA!! YOU CAN TAKE THAT TO THE BANK!!!!

Hey Tony - way to go out on a limb - “The first two games with Oklahoma State (Sept. 1) and South Carolina (Sept. 8) will set the tone for the entire season.” Well “DUH” - and you get paid to come up with this spectacular “insight”!

“Well DUH”, Ga hasn’t played two games to open the door to a season that are as important as these two in a long time because the cowboys and ‘Cocks have good FB teams but we’ll have a chance to work on our weaknesses against both of them. Can we block, giving Stafford time to do his thing then against the ‘Cocks, with all those “D” starters coming back, we have to have our people that can catch the ball on the field and the 1st game will give us a chance to find out. I could name several more reasons as to why the 1st two are so important but I’ve used to much space. SC you’ve gotten all you deserve.

What’s funny is that he had almost as many INTs as completions (8).
