Ranking the ACC’s best wide receivers

Georgia Tech’s Calvin Johnson has gone to the NFL and we probably won’t see another like him for a while. But there are still some very, very good receivers returning in the ACC this fall. Here is just one man’s top five:

  1. Greg Carr, Jr., Florida State: Carr caught 34 passes as a sophomore but had 12 touchdowns because, at 6-5, he was able to out-jump DBs in the end zone. But there is a problem. New offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher demands two things of his receivers: 1) They must be able to run very precise routes and 2) they must block downfield. Carr, for all his talent, needs to improve in both areas. But physically, he’s among the very best in this league.

  2. Darrius Heyward-Bey, Soph. Maryland: Heyward-Bey’s 45 catches for 694 yards was the third best season ever by a freshman receiver in the ACC. He averaged 15.4 yards per catch in Ralph Friedgen’s offense.

  3. Lance Leggett, Sr., Miami: When this guy got to Miami three years ago a lot of us thought he was the next Michael Irvin. He still could have a great end to his career if the offense finally clicks under new coordinator Patrick Nix. Leggett caught 38 passes and averaged 15.4 yards per catch in 2006. He’s bigger and stronger than a year ago.

  4. Eddie Royal, Sr., Virginia Tech: Royal had only 31 catches last season but the Hokies have big plans for him in 2007. Virginia Tech is looking for a lot of ways to get Royal the ball in the open field. He is also a great kick returner.

  5. Sam Shields, Soph., Miami: Shields caught 37 passes for 501 yards as a freshman, the most catches by a Hurricanes rookie since Reggie Wayne in 1997. Every school in the country wanted this guy coming out of Booker High School in Sarasota. This season Shields will show them why.

HONORABLE MENTION

Kevin Challenger, Sr. Boston College: Had 47 catches for 543 yards last season and will have to do even more now that Tony Gonzalez, the Eagles’ big play receiver, is gone.

De’Cody Fagg, Sr., Florida State: Fagg caught 34 passes last season and was the closet thing the Seminole offense had to a big-play threat.

James Johnson, Jr., Georgia Tech: Johnson had 39 catches for 608 yards last season but he has to prove he can get open on his own, and not because Calvin Johnson was being double teamed on the other side of the field. He’ll be the best of Georgia Tech’s committee of receivers.

Aaron Kelly, Jr., Clemson: Chansi Stuckey is gone and that leaves the door open for Kelly, who caught six passes in the Music City Bowl.

Hakeem Nicks, Soph., North Carolina: On a team that doesn’t have a lot of talent, this guy is a real playmaker. He caught 39 passes for 660 yards as a freshman and averaged 16.9 yards per catch.

Kenny Moore, Sr., Wake Forest: This guy will be a surprise star this season. He played running back last season when the Deacons got in a pinch. Now he is going to be their best big-play maker.

If James Johnson is the best of our receivers, we’re scr@#$%d. He disappears in big games and is obviously terrified of getting hit (witness his pathetic waving at catchable balls in the Georgia game last year).

as long as James Johnson/the passing game is effective, Tech will do great. We just can’t let other teams load up the box against TC.

Watch and enjoy.

Reebok, Me thinks it was because he got “BLOWN-UP” twice by the UGA headhunters in the secondary. Receivers tend to get a bad case of the “gator arms” when this happens.

I agree. Reggie Ball threw James Johnson a pass in the UGA game that he caught, but had to go up there for. The ball hung, and he got sandwiched by two UGA defenders. In fact, I don’t think he went back in at receiver in that game.

I could be wrong…this was over 8 months ago.

James had been at a Tickle Pile the night before the UGA game thus his terrible play. If our coaches can’t stop the football players from participating in Tickle Piles our football program will continue to me middling.

Hey Tickle Pile A-hole, go away. We all know you are an Emory puss, so stop fronting as a Tech fan.

The quote about Miami’s offense clicking under Nix is hilarious. I’m so glad he left and we have a real OC on the Flats. JJohnson will be fine, as will the rest of the GT receivers, since we now have a QB who can throw with accuracy, and a playbook that uses all of the field. Choice is gonna demand attention from LB’s and the middle of the field will be open a lot.

This list seems pretty accurate to me. I think the top 3 are all great receivers, but I feel sorry for Leggett who now gets to work in a Nix offensive system. James Johnson and company will have to step it up this year. They are about the only question mark Tech has going into the season.

The list looks pretty good. But mutt fans, James Johnson is our best WR because he has the most experience. A guy to watch out for, He should make that a list, is Demarious Thomas. This guy redshirted but he is Taylor Bennett’s roommate and his favorite target in the spring games. Tech fans, trust me, you want to know him. He is 6’4” 230. Like someone that we all know very well. And his favorite play in on the goal line in the corner. No one could defend it from our defense in the spring game. Watch out!

Tech may have lots of receivers, but you can’t replace Calvin Johnson and assume you’re going to be just as strong. the strength of tech’s team should be its running game. Don’t fool yourselves though—-james johnson is no calvin johnson.

No one said James is as good as Calvin. They said that Thomas was in the same mold as CJ. That’s two different people there bro. Our WR will be fine. A lot of talent, little experience. We have balance now, though. That balance will make up for the loss of CJ. Stop choice. No one else seems to be able to.

and next time you make a post, at least act like you know something about football. the game is not all about what good receivers a team has. but you want to talk about a team with terrible WRs? how bout uga? massaquoi and henderson? that’s just pathetic.

what are you doing on a computer any way? go back to sweeping the sidewalks next to sanford stadium and try harder next time.

i also think the James Johnson will be fine this year. i am not ready to jump on the Thomas band wagon yet. CJ spoiled us Tech fans the past couple of years, so getting anything close will be ten time better than the UGAG receivers whose as i recall has had a bad case of butter fingers the past couple of years. no use in getting open and having blazing speed if you cant catch the ball. yea JJohnson had a couple of suspect games last year, and they couldnt have come at the worse time against Clemson and UGA but experience helps in this league and thats why i know he’ll be better this season. if this offense is nearly as balanced as what people are saying, i think we are going to have a very good season and an excellent chance at winning the ACC.

and to these UGAG fans please worry about your defense and wideouts, and let us handle our situation over at the flats..

i’m glad you showed me massaquoi’s ONE highlight. better yet, your receiving corps’ ONE highlight. one catch, one play, in one game in which we dominated (with the exception of reggie), that’s all you got? how bout a video of that terrible call on the fumble for a TD? you have one of those? i think you “fans” forget that the best player for the last 4 years on your team was on our team. stop focusing on the past. but if you want to do that, then tell me who has the most recent national championship in the state of Georgia.

can any one of you n00b ugag fans give me any reason why you think ugag will be us in november? 1 reason, that’s all i want. i would prefer more, but if you can give me 1, i’ll take it.

To “TechIsGayl-ey”, “richtfan” and other rabies-infested hounds:

Think James Johnson isn’t a good #1?

Let’s look at the stats from 2006 for ALL of your recievers :

Massaquoi: 30 rec., 366 yds, 2 TD’s Henderson: 7 rec., 44 yds., 0 TD’S Bailey: Torn ACL Bryant: 14 rec., 251 yds., 0 TD’s

Now James Johnson:

39 rec., 608 yds., 7 TD’s

More catches, more yards, and more touchdowns than any of UGA’s top four receivers, thrown to him by your favorite Tech player of all-time, Reggie Ball. Taylor Bennett will be considerably better.

Hmmmm….doesn’t sound so bad after all does it? Go burn in h* with all of the dead Ugas and all of the pitiful dawg fans who insist on running their mouths.

By GTBen

none of UGA’s receivers had as many yards, receptions, or TD’s as JJohnson last year. I will give you that it is in part because UGA had QB trouble the first half of the season (but we had it second half with Ball), and part because they rotated a lot of receivers last year, where we just stuck to the 2 Johnsons all season and left the rest up to Choice on the ground. Now this isn’t meant to rag on the UGA receivers (cause some of them are gonna be pretty big this year), i’m just saying James Johnson is a decent receiver. Our passing game isn’t going to be as good as it was when we had CJ, but as long as it’s good enough to give Choice room to run i’ll be happy

Want a reason? How bout that quarterback of ours that walked down the field in the 4th quarter against the bees for the win? That’s reason enough, but I’ll continue. How bout the fact that the ONE AND ONLY year the bugs had a prayer of winning the ACC, they let Weak Forest take it. Face it, the bees are losers, and their fans are even bigger losers. I love how all you nerds profess to have such extensive knowledge of sports. I’ll bet a dollar none of you have even set foot on an athletic field. What a bunch of whining, losing, babies. But keep it up, though. You make us look better by comparison. Dorks.

I’ll take your bet too by the way. you should raise it to $100. I’ll provide the address to send the cash to later.

By GTBen

August 2, 2007 2:15 PM | Link to this

and i’ll argue your reasons, the incompetence of Reggie Ball and our offensive coaching was pretty much the only reason the game was close enough for Stafford’s 1 decent drive to even matter, and both those issues should be resolved (1 definitely is cause Ball is gone). Same 2 reasons for why we didn’t beat Wake (who punts with less than 2 minutes left when you’re down by 3? i mean come on)
UGA’s defense couldn’t handle Choice ( i guess 146 yards on the ground weren’t really too much, only about 60 yards more than all of UGA backs had rushing combined) last year, but i guess all of those guys are gone (you have what, 2 returning starters now?) so maybe the new defense can do better. And a few of us might actually play a sport or 2 (and may have lettered in 5 in high school)

Got to hand it to Tech fans. They have lost six in a row, 13 out of the past 16, and they still are making brash predictions of their future dominance of Georgia. Right. My reason was that the Freshman quarterback who schooled Tech’s “vaunted defense” in the fourth quarter will be back. A year older, and a lifetime better. Oh, nerds, you missed your chance. Better yet, how about providing me with a single reason why Tech will shake off the Dawgs’ dominance of the last two decades? Can’t do it, can you? And by the way, please cease from casting whimsical fancies about how “poor” I am because I went to Georgia. I’ll compare W-2s and Tax Returns with ANY of you nerds. It’ll probably hurt your feelings, but I’ll bet another dollar it won’t be the first time in your pathetic lives you’ve been disappointed. Get back to your cubicles, dorks.

Poor lab geeks. If only they awarded W’s for recieving yards and rushing yards, Georgia Tech might have finished better than 9-5 last year and not lost its last 3 games in a row. Go tell Weak Forest about those stats. They might let you touch their ACC Championship Trophy.

is Choice a good reason? the guy who ran all over UGA is back, a year older and stronger, and UGA’s D is not coming back, yeah it will be good by the time we play you guys (with your coaching staff it should be) but they wont stop Choice. Also we have a good QB finally, and we are actually getting good recruits now. And John Bond, the guy coached Garret Wolfe into the second ranked rusher in the nation while at Northern Illinois(so imagine what he will do with a guy like Choice), and when he was offensive coordinator for Army his offense broke something like 30 or 35 school records . Are these reasons good enough?

By pdiddyGT

August 2, 2007 2:48 PM | Link to this

well, TIG, you have forced my hand. let me give you 5 reasons why we will beat your sorry excuse of a team this november.

1) Experience on defense. Tech is returning 8/11 starters, while uga is returning 2/11. Philip Wheeler will be all over Stafford and the RB(s) like white on rice. Yall might get 30 rushing yards. On the other side of the ball, it’s not like it’s already not hard enough to stop TC, but now yall have no chance. But if for some reason TC gets hurt or Chan pulls a Chan and stops running the ball…

2) Taylor Bennett (or better put, not reggie). He’s an accurate passer, which is more than reggie ever was. Sure, we don’t have CJ anymore, but it’s not gonna matter. James Johnson was better last year than any of your receivers, but we won’t be just passing to him or the other receivers. Look for a few screens to TC and Mike Cox. And speaking of offense…

3) O-Line. Tech returns 4/5 and uga returns 1/5 (i think?). I already smell trouble. The addition of the OLine coach from LSU will help uga, but you can’t teach experience (or how to block Philip Wheeler for that matter). Put another way, we’re returning twice as many starters on the line as yall are on the whole defense.

4) Special Teams. Two words: Durant Brooks. The future Ray Guy award winner will kick it over Mikey Henderson’s head all day. And while Travis Bell is no Brandon Coutu, he will still get the job done.

5) Intangibles. Besides the obvious chip on our shoulder for the 6-in-a-row, the game’s at Bobby Dodd. The players no longer have to worry about reggie giving the game away. And the players will have confidence in Bennett and Bond’s new offense. You can’t coach confidence.

i guess by “schooled the defense” you mean “had one touchdown pass and was one his back for all but one drive”. And “whimsical” sure is a big word for you. Good thing you took that copy and paste class at uga

By Marietta Dawg

August 2, 2007 3:01 PM | Link to this

I am not going to claim to know for sure that UGA will make it 7 in a row over GT come late November.

I do, however, fell very confident that by the GT game the UGA offense will be better than any offense since Richt has been at UGA, except maybe 2002.

I am a little more concerned about the defense. There is significant inexperience on that side of the ball, but a lot of talent. By the GT game (hopefully well before) all that talent that we have recruited and redshirted at the LB and DE position should be performing well.

The major factor to this season is the maturity of Stafford. If he shows that he has been able to build on and learn from last season, UGA will ahve a good season. We saw how much better he looked against the last 3 opponents.

I expect to see him do well this year and hopefully the rest of the team responds.

If only you wannabe prognosticators knew what you were talking about, then Tech might have a chance. But, in reality, they won’t. Born losers don’t change their ways. Tech hasn’t beaten Georgia since Choice has been wearing the Puke yellow, and I really don’t see that changing anytime soon. Sorry. Tech’s best team in years couldn’t beat Georgia’s worst. Chew on that one for a while. Stings, doesn’t it? And what, no more cracks about how “poor” I am because I went to Georgia? The reality of your 40k a year job is setting in, isn’t it? You’ll probably be in that ballpark all your life. Enjoy your Post apartment and your teal Saturn. Congratulations on all your success. Sounds like yall are doing great!

We may not have Johnson and all those big shot ACC receivers you geeks are bragging about. But, we do have Mo Mass. Remember him from last year? He may not have the stats Johnson has, but he made two important catches last year that ended your dream of beating UGA last year. I would rather have that than all the better stats in th world. Stats are for losers and assistant coaches.

40k? i still go to tech, and a bunch of my friends have graduated and i’ve never heard of anyone starting that low….

to the point though, Carr is a good receiver, but i think that Heyward-Bey and Leggett might both be slightly better. Miami has some good receivers, and a lot of hype going into this season so we’ll see if they live up to it.

as for the UGA game, we’ll get to that later, cause anything can happen during the season. Right now it looks like we should beat them, but then again the past 3 years i have felt (and a bunch of my buddies at UGA have agreed) that we should have beat them…

HAHAHAHA… For all the UGA fans that say GT means nothing to them, they sure do spend a lot of time on our vent. Talk about Losers. UGA lost virtually their entire defense. DL= no experience, LB= the only one to do anything last year is playing in the Dome (Taylor), No more Paul Oliver (the guy that “shut down” CJ). Offensively, UGA has a great QB but that means nothing if he doesn’t have time to throw it. The OL will be porous. The RB can’t stay healthy. UGA will be relying on Stafford running (for his life most of the time) and Mikey scoring on punts or kickoffs. The dawwwwwwgs beat GT on a late TD. The real battle is in the trenches and regardless of what UGA fans think, GT has an overwhelming edge.

Guess what? No one has a CJ on their team. Tech’s recieving corp will be deep, and I am very interested to see how Bond uses Peek. In fact, Colin Peek is my choice to be the surprise of the year in the ACC. Also, Jamaal Evans will see more PT this year, and hopefully will be a threat catching the ball out of the backfield. Tech will win this year on strength and diversity. Look for GT to line-up against ND and knock them off the ball. 250 rushing yards would not surprise me.

well instead of making rash predictions, i’ll look at this thing from a more realistic point of view. being a tech fan and somewhat of a student of the game, i would say that our team wasnt outplayed the last two seasons against UGA, i couldnt ask our defense to perform any better but i could have asked for better play calling on the offensive side of the ball. i think Richt just has Gailey’s number. but i also think Gailey handicapped himself by sticking with Reggie. he limited the tpyes of plays he could call because of lack of production he was getting from his quarterback. i truley want to believe that we are past that now, but only time will tell. now i realize how well Taylor performed in the Gator bowl, and i realize he was throwing the ball to CJ who had an outstanding game, but he also managed to find multiple recievers in that game, including a touchdown to J.Johnson. Tashard got his 100+ yards and the defense did about as good as any defense against an offense like W.Virginia.

with that said we lost because of inept play from certain players on the field mainly being QB, i am not here to bash Reggie, he’s moved on and so have we, but am only stating the obvious. dont kid yourselves UGA fans. the game shouldnt have been close, but it was and i was there, and i could tell there was some doubt along the way from the GA faithful all 90,000 of you guys. i dont think playing at home this year will make much difference, because GA fans always pack half the stadium and righfully so, being this state has more UGA fans than Tech fans. thats cool, but the comfort of playing at home will have some influence on our players. we have some seniors that refuse to lost 4 in a row to you guys, and that may be what gets us over the hump. i wont make a prediction, but i will admit i cant hardly wait..

Just being a realistic Tech fan, I would not talk any smack about beating UGA until Chan finally does. The Jackets have a great opportunity this year to have a special year but they will have to prove it on the field and hope injuries do not happen. As for UGA, they will be a different team at the end of the year. I hope, for once in Gailey’s tenure, that Tech improves from game 1 to game 12.

Reading about GT and UGA bicker is much like watching two dogs fight over which dog will bite the spinning tire.

You know how it ends and neither one knows what do with the tire once they catch it.

Shields @ UM will be good, but Miami’s biggest obstacle will be it’s own OC.

Maryland will surprise people b/c the Fridge has to win or else.

Clemson has a good defense, but offensively, their OL will kill them.

FSU has been an OC away from BIG things for a while now. A new OC and a new OL coach will do wonders there.

GT will be good on defense, but their running may not be as good as Choice needs it to be.

Wake is a joke, who will play nearly the easiest ACC schedule this year.

VT is for real. If they get thru LSU without injuries, it will be a good year for them.
